1. On metric choice in dimension reduction for Fr\'echet regression

Abstract

Fr\'echet regression is becoming a mainstay in modern data analysis for analyzing non-traditional data types belonging to general metric spaces. This novel regression method is especially useful in the analysis of complex health data such as continuous monitoring and imaging data. Fr\'echet regression utilizes the pairwise distances between the random objects, which makes the choice of metric crucial in the estimation. In this paper, existing dimension reduction methods for Fr\'echet regression are reviewed, and the effect of metric choice on the estimation of the dimension reduction subspace is explored for the regression between random responses and Euclidean predictors. Extensive numerical studies illustrate how different metrics affect the central and central mean space estimators. Two real applications involving analysis of brain connectivity networks of subjects with and without Parkinson's disease and an analysis of the distributions of glycaemia based on continuous glucose monitoring data are provided, to demonstrate how metric choice can influence findings in real applications.

2. Effect of Science Process Skills and Entry Grades on Academic Scores of Student Teachers

Abstract

The development and acquisition of science process skills (SPS) in science education are closely linked to the development of 21st-century skills and improvements in academic performance. To help facilitate the development of SPS in learners, teachers should acquire and exhibit SPS. This study assesses the SPS acquired by final-year students in a college of education who are pursuing a bachelor's degree in education, using regression correlation to find relationships between their acquired SPS, entry qualifications and academic performance. A parametric achievement test was used to assess the SPS acquired by the student teachers and extant data were used to construct their entry qualifications and academic performance. The data for the study were collected from 236 student teachers in four science colleges affiliated with the University of Cape Coast in Ghana. The results indicated that SPS contributed more to better academic performance than did students' entry qualifications. However, the nature of assessment of academic performance was such that basic SPS was a better influencer of academic performance than integrated SPS. It is recommended that, aside from entry qualifications, SPS acquired by candidates aspiring to pursue science programmes in tertiary institutions should be considered for admissions, and academic assessment instruments should be improved to encourage acquisition and development of integrated SPS.

3. Master Fellows Program Spreads Learning across Ghana

Abstract

The Institute of Teacher Education and Development (INTED) was founded in Accra, Ghana, in 2011, thanks to a fellowship from Stanford University. The institute is a nongovernmental organization whose objective is to improve learner outcomes by supporting the professional growth of educators. At the center of INTED's model is a professional learning initiative for teacher leaders called the Master Fellows Program. The Masters Fellow Program builds the capacity of teachers to become instructional leaders who support professional learning communities, engage other educators in the institute's professional learning activities, share their experiences at conferences and community events, and act as mentors and champions of teachers. Looking into the future, INTED is seeking to expand offerings to include online learning opportunities to ensure that greater numbers of teachers and schools can access its programs at lower costs and improved convenience.

8. Influence of Peer Tutoring on Undergraduate Students' Anxiety in Integrated Science: A Case Study of University of Education, Winneba

Abstract

The study's goal was to determine how peer tutoring affected the anxiety of undergraduate students studying Integrated Science at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) in Ghana's Central Region. The study used a cross-sectional survey research design. Out of 193 students majoring in Integrated Science in their last year at UEW, the researchers chose a sample size of 82 for the survey using a simple random selection procedure. Interviews and a questionnaire served as the study's research tools. After the students completed the surveys, the respondents were then questioned to discover their answers. Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) version 26.0 was used to enter, purify, and analyze the gathered data. The data were arranged into frequency and percentages using the descriptive SPSS function. Due to academic pressure and a fear of failing, the study's findings indicated that the respondents experienced extremely high levels of anxiety in Integrated Science. In addition, it was discovered that one of the main contributors to Integrated Science anxiety was that most students paid attention to what their peers had to say about the program, and in particular, some courses, which had instilled fear in them even before they had taken the course. The study suggested that teachers do their best to aid students' comprehension and that teachers should encourage students to interact more with one another.

14. Is student internship still beneficial today? The views of multi-parties in Ghana

Abstract

Purpose – There is evidence of country-level contextual variations regarding the benefits of practical experience acquired by students during higher education. This paper, therefore, analyses the benefits of student internships in the Ghanaian context. Design/methodology/approach – In Study 1, two structured but distinct surveys were distributed to senior members and students of six specialised technical education institutions (TIs). Study 2 involved in-depth interviews with the heads of organisations in the tertiary education sector, including trade groups, industries and government agencies. Findings – Internship provides soft skills, confidence, career development, sense of responsibility, employability, income, knowledge sharing and networking for students/interns. For TIs, it contributes to the professional development of faculty supervisors and helps them to update the content they teach. For employers, it unveils talented and promising students who can be employed immediately after graduation at a relatively cheaper cost. Research limitations/implications – There is still the need for additional research in different contexts: both developed and developing economies to clear doubts on the controversies surrounding the relevance of internship in the 21st century. Practical implications – TIs should continue to champion student internship programmes. This study highlights the need for employers to place internship students in areas that relate to their fields of study. It also underscores the need for students to embrace internship since it is the cornerstone to their employability in the labour market. Social implications – Undeniably, student internships provide a critical platform for career beginners. Originality/value – This paper contributes to knowledge by offering contextual literature in Ghana on the benefits of student internship programme for interns/students, TIs and employers, all together.

15. Job commitment, total quality management, information communication technology adoption, toxic leadership and job demands: a conceptual framework for student retention

Abstract

Purpose – This paper aims to examine the direct effect of job commitment (JCT) on student retention (REN), exploring the mediating roles of total quality management (TQM) and information communication technology adoption (ADT), and moderating roles of toxic leadership (TLE) and job demands (JDD). Design/methodology/approach – The paper develops a conceptual framework along with postulations by integrating both empirical and theoretical literature in the fields of employee well-being, strategic management, information communication technology, leadership, as well as work and occupational psychology. Findings – This paper proposes that JCT will be positively related to REN, and this positive relationship will be mediated by TQM and ADT. Additionally, TLE and JDD will moderate the direct positive effect of JCT on REN. Research limitations/implications – This paper provides implications for both researchers and practitioners in the areas of strategic decision-making in educational institutions and behaviour management for enhancing REN by applying JCT, TQM and ADT as strategic tools, while keeping TLE and JDD under control. It also offers implications for upcoming researchers to empirically test this conceptual framework in different educational settings. Practical implications – By boosting employees JCT, educational institutions stand the chance of improving REN via TQM and ADT. Additionally, JCT can foster REN under a working environment where TLE and JDD are kept low. Originality/value – The paper offers unique insights into how TQM and ADT connect JCT to REN, and how JCT relates to REN under varied levels of TLE and JDD. It also highlights the theoretical contributions of the resource-based theory of a firm, affective events theory and activation theory.

16. Psychological contract breach moderates job satisfaction–citizenship behaviour relationship

Abstract

Purpose – This study finds out if a satisfied physician will show citizenship behaviour (OCB) in a work environment where psychological contract breach (PCB) exist. Design/methodology/approach – Quantitative data from 214 physicians across 26 health-care units were analysed. Research philosophy was positivism, research design was explanatory and study design was cross-sectional. Preliminary tests were conducted. Reflective measurement and structural models were examined. PLS algorithm tool and bootstrapping procedure were utilised. Control variables were sex, age, employment type and tenure. A significant level was set at 5%. Smart PLS 2.0M.3 software was employed. Findings – The scientist found support for a significant moderating effect of PCB on the nexus between job satisfaction (JST) and OCB, such that PCB demoralised a satisfied physician in showing OCB. In contrast, a fulfilled psychological contract motivated satisfied physicians to exhibit OCB. Practical implications – PCB, if not addressed, may lead satisfied physicians to show low OCB, which has devastating effects for health-care organisations and their patients. Creating balanced, fulfilled and harmonious relationship within physicians will transform the workplace into a more meaningful and purposeful atmosphere. Originality/value – This study offers empirical health-care literature on the moderating effect of PCB, a psychosocial stressor, on the direct relationship between JST and OCB, integrating and lengthening the social exchange theory, resource-based theory and activation theory.

Abstract

Mathematics is a fascinating and perplexing subject that is constantly evolving in a variety of scientific fields. Naturally, it is amazing and beautiful to use mathematics to solve a real-life problem and comprehend it. However, most people fear mathematics. The goal of this research was to explore Ghanaian Junior High School pupils' level of anxiety in mathematics at two different schools.. A Likert-Scale type of questionnaire on mathematics anxiety was given to 120 pupils who were randomly selected from the population to answer voluntarily. Descriptive and inferential analysis were both used to analysis the responses from the pupils. It was revealed that mathematics anxiety was reported to be high among junior high school pupils. It was also found that female pupils had greater levels of mathematics anxiety than male pupils. Practical recommendations are provided based on the findings of the study.

Abstract

Perception has been attributed as a major cause of students' weakness in mathematics. Hence, this study evaluates its effect on student’s performance in the area of mathematics as an elective subject in some selected Senior High School (SHS) in Ghana. Mixed method research design that employed questionnaire with closed-ended and open-ended items were used in the collection of the data. Stratified sampling technique was used in selecting 300 students as sample for the study. Descriptive statistics and Multiple regression were used to analyse the quantitative data. Again, thematic analysis was used for the qualitative data. The findings showed that, SHS students perceived elective mathematics as a difficult subject. Nonetheless, they perceived the teacher-learner activities employed by their teachers in elective mathematics classroom as motivating. Further, they perceived as constructive, the teaching methods used by their elective mathematics teachers. In addition, the study revealed that students’ performance in elective mathematics was not significantly influenced by their perceived difficulty of elective mathematics, teacher motivation and teaching methods although the students expressed favourable dispositions towards these attributes. Thus, the need for Heads of High Schools, to do background check of students’ prior performance, interest and motivation in mathematics as a prerequisite condition for students to pursue elective mathematics is implied in this study. This could stem the tide in the students’ abysmal performance in elective mathematics. Implications for policy, practice and further research are discussed.

Abstract

This study conducted a macro, meso, and micro index decomposition analysis of energy consumption in Ghana from 2013 to 2020, highlighting the roles of local (e.g., power crisis) and global (e.g., COVID-19) shocks, as well as energy policy initiatives on technical efficiency improvement. We found that technical efficiency improvements varied at different times of the implementation period of energy policy initiatives and across various macro, meso, and micro-sectors of the economy. Technical efficiency improvement varied significantly across these sectors but worsened much more in service sector during periods of local and global shocks. Additionally, the importance of activity, structural, and intensity effects differed over time and across the macro, meso, and micro-sectors of the economy. We discuss the policy implications of these findings.

34. Assessing the effectiveness of social accountability interventions in selected district assemblies in Ghana

Abstract

Social accountability interventions have been implemented in low-and middle-income countries as a strategy to improve state-citizen engagement. However, there has been a minimal systematic attempt to document the effectiveness of social accountability initiatives, especially their ability to stimulate accountability actions by citizens. Subsequently, this paper assesses the effectiveness of a social accountability project in Ghana to build the capacity of citizens to participate in state-society engagements and how such engagements resulted in citizens’ actions. Participants were selected from eight Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana using a mixed-method approach and a multi-stage sampling procedure involving simple random and purposive sampling techniques. Key informant interviews and Focus Group Discussions were used to collect data from representatives of traditional authorities, media houses and public officers from MMDAs. Structured interviews were used to collect data from 240 participants of the social accountability project to complement the qualitative data. The project was relevant in addressing national efforts to increase citizens’ participation in local governance. Furthermore, the project raised awareness and increased knowledge about participatory principles and platforms for participation among citizens. Overall, the social accountability interventions improve state-citizen engagement. The frequency of citizen-state engagements increased with the project’s inception but did not enhance the responsiveness of the MMDAs to citizens’ demands due to resource constraints and the overreliance on intermediaries to follow up on community issues at the MMDA, thereby failing to translate into agency for collective action. As a result, the paper recommends that social accountability interventions should improve cooperation between public officials and community members around the delivery of specific public services to build trust between them. Furthermore, such interventions should orient public officials to be receptive and responsive to the concerns of community members.

AbstractThis paper examines the direct effect of employees’ psychological contract fulfilment (PCF) on student contentment (CON), exploring the mediating roles of total quality management (TQM) and information communication technology (ICT) adoption, and moderating roles of government support (GOS) and co-worker support (COS) in higher educational institutions (HEIs) worldwide. The paper develops a conceptual framework along with postulations by combining both empirical and theoretical literature in multidisciplinary fields. This paper finds and proposes that PCF will be positively related to CON, and this positive relationship will be positively mediated by TQM and ICT adoption jointly and independently. Additionally, GOS and COS will positively moderate between PCF and CON. This paper lays the foundation for upcoming researchers to empirically test the proposed conceptual framework in different educational settings across the globe. The conceptual research bridges the gap between educational management literature and other fields such as quality management, information systems, and public administration. It helps HEIs prioritise initiatives that enhance the overall well-being of their staff and faculty. This puts them in a better position to satisfy students. This advances Sustainable Development Goal 4, which aims to guarantee inclusive and fair quality education and encourage endless possibilities for learning for every student.

Abstract

Achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 remains fundamental to limiting global warming to 1.5 °C this century and mitigating the catastrophic effects of climate change. Policymakers have indicated that the transition towards a renewable energy economy is the catalyst for achieving this. Transitioning towards a renewable energy economy requires substantial investment in renewable energy technologies. While most empirical studies have explored the linkage between investment in research and development (R&D) and carbon emissions, not much is known empirically about the effect of energy innovation R&D on renewable energy generation. This study, therefore, contributes to the literature by investigating the impact of energy innovation R&D on renewable energy generation using a comprehensive panel dataset of 26 OECD countries from 1974 to 2020. Using a battery of robust alternative estimation methods, the results indicate that energy innovation R&D generally does not increase total renewable energy generation in the panel of OECD countries. The results further show that energy innovation R&D has a heterogeneous effect on disaggregated renewable energy sources such as solar energy, wind energy, nuclear energy, and hydro energy generation.

38. Energy poverty and mental distress in South Africa: Assessing linkages and potential pathways

Abstract

Despite the increasing attention on energy poverty due to its health implications, the South African story is yet to be told, while pathways of influence have received little empirical investigation in the extant literature. This study examines how energy poverty affects mental distress in post-apartheid South Africa and explores gender and locational heterogeneities in outcomes as well as potential pathways. We use five years of longitudinal data extracted from the National Income Dynamics Survey (NIDS). We employ the Lewbel instrumental variable method to resolve endogeneity and apply causal mediation analysis to identify potential channels of effect. The findings suggest that energy poverty is associated with an increase in mental distress. This outcome is consistent across different estimation methods and conceptualisations of energy poverty. The deteriorating effect of energy poverty on mental distress is more pronounced among females and rural residents. We further establish that experiences of persistent cough and chest pains/tightness serve as potential pathways in the link between energy poverty and mental distress. We encourage the South African government to increase budgetary allocations to the free basic electricity policy and provide connection subsidies to poor households, which have the potential to alleviate energy poverty and reduce mental distress as a result.

45. Adulticidal, ovicidal and repellent potencies of Alchornea cordifolia (Schum. and Thonn.) in the management of the malaria vector Anopheles gambiae (Diptera: Culicidae)

Abstract

Malaria, which is transmitted by the mosquito Anopheles gambiae, has long been a major public health concern in the tropics. Chemicals used to control A. gambiae have caused significant harm to the environmental and non-target organisms. Furthermore, these mosquitoes have demonstrated a high level of resistance. This study evaluated the adulticidal, ovicidal and repellent potencies of leaf extracts of Alchornea cordifolia against A. gambiae. It was observed that 5 mg/ml of the leaf extract induced about 94% mortality in the adult A. gambiae, 0.8 gm/cm3 of the leaf extract repelled 95% of the mosquitoes within 15 minutes and 0.6 mg/ml of the leaf extract completely inhibited hatching of mosquito ova. Evidently, A. cordifolia leaf extracts showed a good efficacy in the management of A. gambiae in this study. More research is needed to determine its mode of action, synergism with other products, and efficacy in actual field conditions.
