1. Spin signatures in the electrical response of graphene nanogaps

Abstract

We analyse the electrical response of narrow graphene nanogaps in search for transport signatures stemming from spin-polarized edge states. We find that the electrical transport across graphene nanogaps having perfectly defined zigzag edges does not carry any spin-related signature. We also analyse the magnetic and electrical properties of nanogaps whose electrodes have wedges that possibly occur in the currently fabricated nanogaps. These wedges can host spin polarized wedge low-energy states due to the bipartite nature of the graphene lattice. We find that these spin-polarized low-energy modes give rise to low-voltage signatures in the differential conductance and to distinctive features in the stability diagrams. Abstract

It is understood that molecular conjugation plays an important role in charge transport through single-molecule junctions. Here, we investigate electron transport through an anthraquinone based single-molecule three-terminal device. With the use of an electric-field induced by a gate electrode, the molecule is reduced resulting into a ten-fold increase in the off-resonant differential conductance. Theoretical calculations link the change in differential conductance to a reduction-induced change in conjugation, thereby lifting destructive interference of transport pathways., Comment: Nano Letters (2015)

Abstract

Monte Carlo simulation is an essential tool in emission tomography that can assist in the design of new medical imaging devices, the optimization of acquisition protocols, and the development or assessment of image reconstruction algorithms and correction techniques. GATE, the Geant4 Application for Tomographic Emission, encapsulates the Geant4 libraries to achieve a modular, versatile, scripted simulation toolkit adapted to the field of nuclear medicine. In particular, GATE allows the description of time-dependent phenomena such as source or detector movement, and source decay kinetics. This feature makes it possible to simulate time curves under realistic acquisition conditions and to test dynamic reconstruction algorithms. A public release of GATE licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License can be downloaded at the address http://www-lphe.epfl.ch/GATE/.

Abstract

Background: The development of radiopharmaceuticals requires extensive evaluation before they can be applied in a diagnostic or therapeutic setting in Nuclear Medicine. Chemical, radiochemical, and pharmaceutical parameters must be established and verified to ensure the quality of these novel products. Main body: To provide supportive evidence for the expected human in vivo behaviour, particularly related to safety and efficacy, additional tests, often referred to as “non-clinical” or “preclinical” are mandatory. This document is an outcome of a Technical Meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency. It summarises the considerations necessary for non-clinical studies to accommodate the regulatory requirements for clinical translation of radiopharmaceuticals. These considerations include non-clinical pharmacology, radiation exposure and effects, toxicological studies, pharmacokinetic modelling, and imaging studies. Additionally, standardisation of different specific clinical applications is discussed. Conclusion: This document is intended as a guide for radiopharmaceutical scientists, Nuclear Medicine specialists, and regulatory professionals to bring innovative diagnostic and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals into the clinical evaluation process in a safe and effective way.

Abstract

In the original publication [1], there was a mistake in Figure 2A as published. The upper panel was incorrectly a duplicate version of the lower panel, and included PVC VT values, instead of uncorrected VT values. In the caption, a typo in referring to legend colors (blue instead of red image color) was also observed. The corrected Figure 2 appears below. The accompanying text in the manuscript does not include these mistakes and therefore remains unchanged. The authors state that the scientific conclusions are unaffected. This correction was approved by the Academic Editor. The original publication has also been updated.

Abstract

This article is a collective response to the 2020 iteration of The Manifesto for Teaching Online. Originally published in 2011 as 20 simple but provocative statements, the aim was, and continues to be, to critically challenge the normalization of education as techno-corporate enterprise and the failure to properly account for digital methods in teaching in Higher Education. The 2020 Manifesto continues in the same critically provocative fashion, and, as the response collected here demonstrates, its publication could not be timelier. Though the Manifesto was written before the Covid-19 pandemic, many of the responses gathered here inevitably reflect on the experiences of moving to digital, distant, online teaching under unprecedented conditions. As these contributions reveal, the challenges were many and varied, ranging from the positive, breakthrough opportunities that digital learning offered to many students, including the disabled, to the problematic, such as poor digital networks and access, and simple digital poverty. Regardless of the nature of each response, taken together, what they show is that The Manifesto for Teaching Online offers welcome insights into and practical advice on how to teach online, and creatively confront the supremacy of face-to-face teaching.

Abstract

Aims Patients with cardiac disease are considered high risk for poor outcomes following hospitalization with COVID-19. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate heterogeneity in associations between various heart disease subtypes and in-hospital mortality. Methods and results We used data from the CAPACITY-COVID registry and LEOSS study. Multivariable Poisson regression models were fitted to assess the association between different types of pre-existing heart disease and in-hospital mortality. A total of 16 511 patients with COVID-19 were included (21.1% aged 66-75 years; 40.2% female) and 31.5% had a history of heart disease. Patients with heart disease were older, predominantly male, and often had other comorbid conditions when compared with those without. Mortality was higher in patients with cardiac disease (29.7%; n= 1545 vs. 15.9%; n= 1797). However, following multivariable adjustment, this difference was not significant [adjusted risk ratio (aRR) 1.08, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.02-1.15; P = 0.12 (corrected for multiple testing)]. Associations with in-hospital mortality by heart disease subtypes differed considerably, with the strongest association for heart failure (aRR 1.19, 95% CI 1.10-1.30; P <0.018) particularly for severe (New York Heart Association class III/IV) heart failure (aRR 1.41, 95% CI 1.20-1.64; P < 0.018). None of the other heart disease subtypes, including ischaemic heart disease, remained significant after multivariable adjustment. Serious cardiac complications were diagnosed in <1% of patients. Conclusion Considerable heterogeneity exists in the strength of association between heart disease subtypes and in-hospital mortality. Of all patients with heart disease, those with heart failure are at greatest risk of death when hospitalized with COVID-19. Serious cardiac complications are rare during hospitalization. Abstract

De afgelopen jaren is geconstateerd dat er in de zomer en het najaar grote hoeveelheden jonge vis aanwezig zijn in het IJsselmeer, maar dat deze tijdens/na de wintermaanden massaal lijken te verdwijnen. Oudere vissen (>2 jaar) worden tijdens visbemonsteringen in het IJsselmeer nog slechts beperkt aangetroffen. Onbekend is welke factoren bijdragen aan de ogenschijnlijke geringe overleving van jonge vis in het IJsselmeer. Verondersteld wordt dat er gedurende de winter en/of het volgende voorjaar massale sterfte plaatsvindt onder de jonge (0+) vis. Door onderzoek te laten doen naar de (gedrags)kenmerken van jonge vis in de winterperiode wil Rijkswaterstaat meer kennis en inzicht vergaren over mogelijke mechanismen die bijdragen aan de slechte overleving van deze vissen. Het primaire doel van voorliggende studie is meer inzicht te krijgen in de (gedrag)kenmerken van jonge vis tijdens de wintermaanden in en rondom het IJsselmeer. Dit door middel van een literatuurstudie en veldonderzoek. Het doel is op deze wijze aanknopingspunten te vinden voor oorzaken die bijdragen aan de slechte overleving van de jonge vis en daarmee de hypothesen aan te scherpen. Het onderzoek richt zich primair op de soorten baars, blankvoorn, brasem en snoekbaars.

Though the Manifesto was written before the Covid-19 pandemic, many of the responses gathered here inevitably reflect on the experiences of moving to digital, distant, online teaching under unprecedented conditions. As these contributions reveal, the challenges were many and varied, ranging from the positive, breakthrough opportunities that digital learning offered to many students, including the disabled, to the problematic, such as poor digital networks and access, and simple digital poverty. Regardless of the nature of each response, taken together, what they show is that The Manifesto for Teaching Online offers welcome insights into and practical advice on how to teach online, and creatively confront the supremacy of face-to-face teaching.

Abstract

This article is a collective response to the 2020 iteration of The Manifesto for Teaching Online. Originally published in 2011 as 20 simple but provocative statements, the aim was, and continues to be, to critically challenge the normalization of education as techno-corporate enterprise and the failure to properly account for digital methods in teaching in Higher Education. The 2020 Manifesto continues in the same critically provocative fashion, and, as the response collected here demonstrates, its publication could not be timelier. Voor een meer structurele oplossing moeten beekdalen natuurlijker worden ingericht en grondwaterstromen hersteld.

De drie Brabantse waterschappen hebben met adviesbureau ATKB een analyse uitgevoerd naar de effecten van de afgelopen droge jaren op de visstand. Zowel de soortenrijkdom als het aantal vissen in de Brabantse beken blijken af te nemen. De visbeoordelingen voor de Europese Kaderrichtlijn Water dalen daardoor ook. Nadere analyses moeten inzicht geven in exacte oorzaken voor de achteruitgang, geconstateerde verschillen tussen waterschappen en de effecten van uitgevoerde maatregelen.

Abstract

BACKGROUND Hospitalized patients on clozapine are at risk for dysregulation of their clozapine blood concentration due to smoking cessation, (pre-existing) infections and the use of drugs which influence the metabolism of clozapine. In July 2017 a therapeutic guideline was implemented in the Haga Teaching Hospital and Haaglanden Medical Centre to monitor patients during hospital admission to prevent clozapine toxicity. OBJECTIVE Primary objective was to study the effect of the guideline by comparing the percentage of hospitalized patients with one or more serum clozapine levels > 0.80 mg/L and/or > 50% increase of their serum clozapine level during admission, before and after implementation of the guideline. DESIGN We conducted a non-interventional retrospective study. METHODS In a period of ten months before and after the implementation of the guideline, data from all hospitalized patients 18 years using clozapine for schizophrenia were collected from electronic patient files. RESULTS In90%ofallpatientsaninterventionwasnecessaryaccording to the guideline. There was no significant difference between the percentage of patients with supratherapeutic clozapine levels before and after the implementation of the guideline (P = 0.695). The involvement of the hospital pharmacist improved significantly after implementation of the therapeutic guideline (number of interventions; P < 0,001). The hospital pharmacist recommended the involvement/consultation of the psychiatrist in 39% of the admissions after implementation of the guideline. CONCLUSION The therapeutic guideline did not reduce the number of patients with supratherapeutic clozapine levels. However, the involvement of the hospital pharmacist resulted in earlier involvement of the psychiatrist. According to the guideline an intervention was necessary in most patients 190%). All patients with supratherapeutic clozapine levels (n = 28) had an infection and/or an elevated CRP which suggests early dose reductions are required.

Visstandonderzoek waterlichamen Waterschap Rivierenland 2018: EKR-scores. Dit rapport beschrijft de resultaten van de toetsing en beoordeling van de visstand in alle dertig waterlichamen in het beheergebied van waterschap Rivierenland in 2018. Na deze inleiding wordt in hoofdstuk 2 de toegepaste methodiek van de KRW-toetsing en -beoordeling beschreven. Vervolgens worden in hoofdstuk 3 de resultaten per waterlichaam gepresenteerd. In hoofdstuk 4 volgt daarna de discussie waarin de meest opmerkelijke resultaten worden besproken en een vergelijking wordt gemaakt met de resultaten van voorgaande bemonsteringen. Aansluitend worden in hoofdstuk 5 conclusies en aanbevelingen gegeven. De belangrijkste figuren en tabellen zijn in de hoofdtekst van het rapport opgenomen. Abstract

We analyse the electrical response of narrow graphene nanogaps in search for transport signatures stemming from spin-polarized edge states. We find that the electrical transport across graphene nanogaps having perfectly defined zigzag edges does not carry any spin-related signature. We also analyse the magnetic and electrical properties of nanogaps whose electrodes have wedges that possibly occur in the currently fabricated nanogaps. These wedges can host spin polarized wedge low-energy states due to the bipartite nature of the graphene lattice. We find that these spin-polarized low-energy modes give rise to low-voltage signatures in the differential conductance and to distinctive features in the stability diagrams. In 2016 is de visstand in de Chaamse beken door zowel de Vissenwerkgroep van Mark & Leij als adviesbureau ATKB onderzocht. De gegevens laten zien dat de vangsten, ondanks de afwijkingen tussen de toegepaste methoden, verrassend veel overeenkomsten vertonen. Waterschap Brabantse Delta wil de vangsten van zowel adviesbureaus als vrijwilligers verzamelen om meer inzicht te krijgen in de ontwikkeling van de visstand.

Abstract

Door het RAM is in 2016 een inventarisatie gemaakt van de wensen voor verbeteringen en aanpassingen in de KRW maatlatten (Puts, 2016). Eén van de vaak genoemde wensen door meerdere waterschappen is het verbeteren van de maatlat voor vissen in de kleine R-typen. Eind augustus 2017 is een expertgroep bijeen geweest om over verbetervoorstellen voor de maatlat te discussiëren. Hieruit kwam een aantal duidelijke knelpunten en in sommige gevallen ook reeds mogelijke verbeterpunten aan de orde voor de maatlat voor vissen voor de kleine R-typen (R4, R5, R6, R12, R13, R14, R15, R17, R18). De groep experts heeft geconstateerd dat een landelijke validatie van de bestaande maatlat (Van der Molen et al. 2016) zeer wenselijk was en de wens geuit om de Nederlandse dataset van biologie en drukken zoals gebruikt bij de intercalibratie uit te bouwen. Na een aantal meetronden voor de KRW is veel informatie in Nederland aanwezig om de gewenste dataset uit te breiden om een dergelijke validatie uit te voeren. De validatie moest de noodzaak tot het doorvoeren concrete verbetervoorstellen voor de vissenmaatlat in kleine R-typen in beeld brengen.
