Search

Nuclear fusion could offer clean, abundant energy. However, managing the immense power exhausted from the core fusion plasma towards the divertor remains a major challenge. This is compounded in emerging compact reactor designs which promise more cost-effective pathways towards commercial fusion energy. Alternative divertor configurations (ADCs) are a potential solution to this challenge. In this work, we demonstrate exhaust control in ADCs for the first time, on MAST-U. We employ a novel diagnostic strategy for the neutral gas buffer which shields the target. Our work shows that ADCs tackle key risks and uncertainties in realising fusion energy: 1) an enlarged operating window which 2) improves exhaust control through the absorption of transients which can remove the neutral shield and damage the divertor, 3) isolation of each divertor from other reactor regions, enabling combined control. This showcases real-world benefits of alternative divertors for effective heat load management and control in reactors.

ZrSiS has been identified as an exemplary Dirac nodal-line semimetal, in which the Dirac band crossings extend along a closed loop in momentum space. Recently, the topology of the Fermi surface of ZrSiS was uncovered in great detail by quantum oscillation studies. For a magnetic field along the tetragonal $c$ axis, a rich frequency spectrum was observed stemming from the principal electron and hole pockets, and multiple magnetic breakdown orbits. In this work we use uniaxial strain as a tuning parameter for the Fermi surface and the low energy excitations. We measure the magnetoresistance of a single crystal under tensile (up to 0.34 %) and compressive (up to -0.28 %) strain exerted along the $a$ axis and in magnetic fields up to 30 T. We observe a systematic weakening of the peak structure in the Shubnikov-de Haas frequency spectrum upon changing from compressive to tensile strain. This effect may be explained by a decrease in the effective quantum mobility upon decreasing the $c/a$ ratio, which is corroborated by a concurrent increase in the Dingle temperature., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, to be published in Physical Review B

This is the second part in a series of papers on counting surfaces on Calabi-Yau 4-folds. In this paper, we introduce $K$-theoretic $\mathrm{DT}, \mathrm{PT}_0, \mathrm{PT}_1$ invariants and conjecture a $\mathrm{DT}$-$\mathrm{PT}_0$ correspondence. For certain tautological insertions, we derive Lefschetz principles in both the compact and toric case allowing reductions to 3-dimensional $\mathrm{DT}, \mathrm{PT}$ invariants. We also develop a topological vertex and conjecture a $\mathrm{DT}$-$\mathrm{PT}_0$ vertex correspondence. These methods enable us to verify our conjectures in several examples., Comment: 97 pages

Classical gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have two distinct emission episodes: prompt emission from ultra-relativistic ejecta and afterglow from shocked circumstellar material. While both components are extremely luminous in known GRBs, a variety of scenarios predict the existence of luminous afterglow emission with little or no associated high-energy prompt emission. We present AT 2019pim, the first secure example of this phenomenon to be identified. Serendipitously discovered during follow-up observations of a gravitational-wave trigger and located in a contemporaneous TESS sector, it is hallmarked by a fast-rising (t ~ 2 hr), luminous (M_UV,peak ~ -24.4 mag) optical transient with accompanying luminous X-ray and radio emission. No gamma-ray emission consistent with the time and location of the transient was detected by Fermi-GBM or by Konus, placing strong limits on an accompanying GRB. We investigate several independent observational aspects of the afterglow in the context of constraints on relativistic motion and find all of them are consistent with an initial Lorentz factor of Gamma_0 ~ 30-50, significantly lower than in any well-observed GRB and consistent with the theoretically-predicted "dirty fireball" scenario in which the high-energy prompt emission is stifled by pair production. However, we cannot rule out a structured jet model in which only the line-of-sight material was ejected at low-Gamma, off-axis from a classical high-Gamma jet core. This event represents a milestone in orphan afterglow searches, demonstrating that luminous afterglows with weak or no detectable gamma-ray radiation exist in nature and can be discovered by high-cadence optical surveys., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

We present an extensive analysis of the optical and UV properties of AT2023clx, the closest TDE to date, that occurred in the nucleus of the interacting LINER galaxy, NGC3799 (z=0.01107). After correcting for the host reddening (E(B-V) = 0.179 mag), we find its peak absolute g-band magnitude to be -18.03{+/-}0.07 mag, and its peak bolometric luminosity to be L=(1.57{+/-}0.19)x10^43 erg/s. AT2023clx displays several distinctive features: first, it rose to peak within 10.4{+/-}2.5 days, making it the fastest rising TDE to date. Our SMBH mass estimate of M_BH ~ 10^6 Msol rules out the possibility of an intermediate-mass BH as the reason for the fast rise. Dense spectral follow-up reveals a blue continuum that cools slowly and broad Balmer and HeII lines as well as weak HeI 5876,6678 emission features that are typically seen in TDEs. The early, broad (width ~ 15000 km/s) profile of Ha matches theoretical expectations from an optically thick outflow. A flat Balmer decrement (~ 1.58) suggests that the lines are collisionally excited rather than being produced via photoionisation, in contrast to typical active galactic nuclei. A second distinctive feature, seen for the first time in TDE spectra, is a sharp, narrow emission peak at a rest wavelength of ~ 6353 A. This feature is clearly visible up to 10d post-peak; we attribute it to clumpy material preceding the bulk outflow, which manifests as a high-velocity component of Ha (-9584 km/s). Its third distinctive feature is the rapid cooling during the first ~ 20 days after peak, reflected as a break in the temperature evolution. Combining these findings, we propose a scenario for AT2023clx involving the disruption of a very low-mass star (<=0.1 Msol) with an outflow launched in our line of sight and with disruption properties that led to efficient circularisation and prompt accretion disc formation, observed through a low-density photosphere., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics (in production; official acceptance date: 28/06/2024)

We introduce PyVRP, a Python package that implements hybrid genetic search in a state-of-the-art vehicle routing problem (VRP) solver. The package is designed for the VRP with time windows (VRPTW), but can be easily extended to support other VRP variants. PyVRP combines the flexibility of Python with the performance of C++, by implementing (only) performance critical parts of the algorithm in C++, while being fully customisable at the Python level. PyVRP is a polished implementation of the algorithm that ranked 1st in the 2021 DIMACS VRPTW challenge and, after improvements, ranked 1st on the static variant of the EURO meets NeurIPS 2022 vehicle routing competition. The code follows good software engineering practices, and is well-documented and unit tested. PyVRP is freely available under the liberal MIT license. Through numerical experiments we show that PyVRP achieves state-of-the-art results on the VRPTW and capacitated VRP. Exhausting power from the hot fusion core to the plasma-facing components is one of the biggest challenges in fusion energy. The MAST Upgrade tokamak uniquely integrates strong containment of neutrals within the exhaust area (divertor) with extreme divertor shaping capability. By systematically altering the divertor shape, this study shows the strongest evidence to date that long-legged divertors with a high magnetic field gradient (total flux expansion) deliver key power exhaust benefits without adversely impacting the hot fusion core. These benefits are already achieved with relatively modest geometry adjustments that are more feasible to integrate in reactor designs. Benefits include reduced target heat loads and improved access to, and stability of, a neutral gas buffer that 'shields' the target and enhances power exhaust (detachment). Analysis and model comparisons shows these benefits are obtained by combining multiple shaping aspects: long-legged divertors have expanded plasma-neutral interaction volume that drive reductions in particle and power loads, while total flux expansion enhances detachment access and stability. Containing the neutrals in the exhaust area with physical structures further augments these shaping benefits. These results demonstrate strategic variation in the divertor geometry and magnetic topology is a potential solution to one of fusion's biggest challenges: power exhaust.

This experimental study presents an in-depth investigation of the performance of the MAST-U Super-X divertor during NBI-heated operation (up to 2.5 MW) focussing on volumetric ion sources and sinks as well as power losses during detachment. The particle balance and power loss analysis revealed the crucial role of Molecular Activated Recombination and Dissociation (MAR and MAD) ion sinks in divertor particle and power balance, which remain pronounced in the change from ohmic to higher power (NBI heated) L-mode conditions. The importance of MAR and MAD remains with double the absorbed NBI heating. MAD results in significant power dissipation (up to $\sim 20 \%$ of $P_{SOL}$), mostly in the cold ($T_e < 5$ eV) detached region. Theoretical and experimental evidence is found for the potential contribution of $D^-$ to MAR and MAD, which warrants further study. These results suggest that MAR and MAD can be relevant in higher power conditions than the ohmic conditions studied previously. Post-processing reactor-scale simulations shows that MAR and MAD can play a significant role in divertor physics and synthetic diagnostic signals of reactor-scale devices, which are currently underestimated in exhaust simulations. This raises implications for the accuracy of reactor-scale divertor simulations of particularly tightly baffled (alternative) divertor configurations.

For a smooth projective surface $X$ satisfying $H_1(X,\mathbb{Z}) = 0$ and $w \in H^2(X,\mu_r)$, we study deformation invariants of the pair $(X,w)$. Choosing a Brauer-Severi variety $Y$ (or, equivalently, Azumaya algebra $\mathcal{A}$) over $X$ with Stiefel-Whitney class $w$, the invariants are defined as virtual intersection numbers on suitable moduli spaces of stable twisted sheaves on $Y$ constructed by Yoshioka (or, equivalently, moduli spaces of $\mathcal{A}$-modules of Hoffmann-Stuhler). We show that the invariants do not depend on the choice of $Y$. Using a result of de Jong, we observe that they are deformation invariants of the pair $(X,w)$. For surfaces with $h^{2,0}(X) > 0$, we show that the invariants can often be expressed as virtual intersection numbers on Gieseker-Maruyama-Simpson moduli spaces of stable sheaves on $X$. This can be seen as a $\mathrm{PGL}_r$-$\mathrm{SL}_r$ correspondence. As an application, we express $\mathrm{SU}(r) / \mu_r$ Vafa-Witten invariants of $X$ in terms of $\mathrm{SU}(r)$ Vafa-Witten invariants of $X$. We also show how formulae from Donaldson theory can be used to obtain upper bounds for the minimal second Chern class of Azumaya algebras on $X$ with given division algebra at the generic point., Comment: 47 pages

Deep reinforcement learning (RL) has recently shown significant benefits in solving combinatorial optimization (CO) problems, reducing reliance on domain expertise, and improving computational efficiency. However, the field lacks a unified benchmark for easy development and standardized comparison of algorithms across diverse CO problems. To fill this gap, we introduce RL4CO, a unified and extensive benchmark with in-depth library coverage of 23 state-of-the-art methods and more than 20 CO problems. Built on efficient software libraries and best practices in implementation, RL4CO features modularized implementation and flexible configuration of diverse RL algorithms, neural network architectures, inference techniques, and environments. RL4CO allows researchers to seamlessly navigate existing successes and develop their unique designs, facilitating the entire research process by decoupling science from heavy engineering. We also provide extensive benchmark studies to inspire new insights and future work. The quantum Hall effect is widely used for the investigation of fundamental phenomena, ranging from topological phases to composite fermions. In particular, the discovery of a room temperature resistance quantum in graphene is significant for compact resistance standards that can operate above cryogenic temperatures. However, this requires large magnetic fields that are accessible only in a few high magnetic field facilities. Here, we report on the quantum Hall effect in graphene encapsulated by the ferroelectric insulator CuInP2S6. Electrostatic gating of the graphene channel enables the Fermi energy to be tuned so that electrons in the localized states of the insulator are in equilibrium with the current-carrying, delocalized states of graphene. Due to the presence of strongly bound states in this hybrid system, a quantum Hall plateau can be achieved at room temperature in relatively modest magnetic fields. A growing number of supernovae (SNe) are now known to exhibit evidence for significant interaction with a dense, pre-existing, circumstellar medium (CSM). SNe Ibn comprise one such class that can be characterised by both rapidly evolving light curves and persistent narrow He I lines. The origin of such a dense CSM in these systems remains a pressing question, specifically concerning the progenitor system and mass-loss mechanism. In this paper, we present multi-wavelength data of the Type Ibn SN 2020nxt, including $HST$/STIS ultraviolet spectra. We fit the data with recently updated CMFGEN models designed to handle configurations for SNe Ibn. The UV coverage yields strong constraints on the energetics and, when combined with the CMFGEN models, offer new insight on potential progenitor systems. We find the most successful model is a $\lesssim4 {\rm M}_\odot$ helium star that lost its $\sim 1\,{\rm M}_\odot$ He-rich envelope in the years preceding core collapse. We also consider viable alternatives, such as a He white dwarf merger. Ultimately, we conclude at least some SNe Ibn do not arise from single, massive ($>30 {\rm M}_\odot$) Wolf-Rayet-like stars., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, 1 table, submitted to MNRAS

This paper shows first quantitative analysis of the detachment processes in the MAST Upgrade Super-X divertor (SXD). We identify an unprecedented impact of plasma-molecular interactions involving molecular ions (likely $D_2^+$), resulting in strong ion sinks (Molecular Activated Recombination - MAR), leading to a reduction of ion target flux. The MAR ion sinks exceed the divertor ion sources before electron-ion recombination (EIR) starts to occur, suggesting that significant ionisation occurs outside of the divertor chamber. In the EIR region, $T_e \ll 0.2$ eV is observed and MAR remains significant in these deep detached phases. The total ion sink strength demonstrates the capability for particle (ion) exhaust in the Super-X Configuration. Molecular Activated Dissociation (MAD) is the dominant volumetric neutral atom creation process can lead to an electron cooling of 20\% of $P_{SOL}$. The measured total radiative power losses \emph{in the divertor chamber} are consistent with inferred hydrogenic radiative power losses. This suggests that intrinsic divertor impurity radiation, despite the carbon walls, is minor in the divertor chamber. This contrasts previous TCV results, which may be associated with enhanced plasma-neutral interactions and reduced chemical erosion in the detached, tightly baffled SXD. The above observations have also been observed in higher heat flux (narrower SOL width) type I ELMy H-mode discharges. This provides evidence that the characterisation in this paper may be general.

Let $G$ be a finite subgroup of $\mathrm{SU}(4)$ whose elements have age not larger than one. In the first part of this paper, we define $K$-theoretic stable pair invariants on the crepant resolution of the affine quotient $\mathbb{C}^4/G$, and conjecture closed formulae for their generating series, expressed in terms of the root system of $G$. In the second part, we define degree zero Donaldson-Thomas invariants of Calabi-Yau 4-orbifolds, develop a vertex formalism that computes the invariants in the toric case and conjecture closed formulae for the quotient stacks $[\mathbb{C}^4/\mathbb{Z}_r]$, $[\mathbb{C}^4/\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}_2]$. Among the supernovae (SNe) that show strong interaction with the circumstellar medium, there is a rare subclass of Type Ia supernovae, SNe Ia-CSM, that show strong narrow hydrogen emission lines much like SNe IIn but on top of a diluted over-luminous Type Ia spectrum. In the only previous systematic study of this class (Silverman et al. 2013), 16 objects were identified, 8 historic and 8 from the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF). Now using the successor survey to PTF, the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), we have classified 12 additional objects of this type through the systematic Bright Transient Survey (BTS). In this study, we present and analyze the optical and mid-IR light curves, optical spectra, and host galaxy properties of this sample. Consistent with previous studies, we find the objects to have slowly evolving light curves compared to normal SNe Ia with peak absolute magnitudes between -19.1 and -21, spectra having weak H$\beta$, large Balmer decrements of ~7 and strong Ca NIR emission. Out of 10 SNe from our sample observed by NEOWISE, 9 have $3\sigma$ detections, along with some showing a clear reduction in red-wing of H$\alpha$, indicative of newly formed dust. We do not find our SN Ia-CSM sample to have a significantly different distribution of equivalent width of He I $\lambda5876$ than SNe IIn as observed in Silverman et al. 2013. The hosts tend to be late-type galaxies with recent star formation. We also derive a rate estimate of 29$^{+27}_{-21}$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$ for SNe Ia-CSM which is ~0.02--0.2 % of the SN Ia rate. Tidal disruption events (TDEs) are bursts of electromagnetic energy released when supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at the centers of galaxies violently disrupt a star that passes too close. TDEs provide a new window to study accretion onto SMBHs; in some rare cases, this accretion leads to launching of a relativistic jet, but the necessary conditions are not fully understood. The best studied jetted TDE to date is Swift J1644+57, which was discovered in gamma-rays, but was too obscured by dust to be seen at optical wavelengths. Here we report the optical discovery of AT2022cmc, a rapidly fading source at cosmological distance (redshift z=1.19325) whose unique lightcurve transitioned into a luminous plateau within days. Observations of a bright counterpart at other wavelengths, including X-rays, sub-millimeter, and radio, supports the interpretation of AT2022cmc as a jetted TDE containing a synchrotron "afterglow", likely launched by a SMBH with spin $a \gtrsim 0.3$. Using 4 years of Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) survey data, we calculate a rate of $0.02 ^{+ 0.04 }_{- 0.01 }$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$ for on-axis jetted TDEs based on the luminous, fast-fading red component, thus providing a measurement complementary to the rates derived from X-ray and radio observations. Correcting for the beaming angle effects, this rate confirms that about 1% of TDEs have relativistic jets. The interaction between a fluid and a wall is described with a certain boundary condition for the fluid velocity at the wall. To understand how fluids behave near a rough wall, the fluid velocity at every point of the rough surface may be provided. This approach requires detailed knowledge of, and likely depends strongly on the roughness. Another approach of modeling the boundary conditions of a rough wall is to coarse grain and extract a penetration depth over which on average the fluid penetrates into the roughness. In this work we show that for a broad range of periodic roughness patterns and relative flow velocities, a universal penetration depth function can be obtained. We obtain these results with experiments and complementary numerical simulations. Our results show that wall roughness boundary conditions can be captured with an average ``slip length'' and so indicate that surface patterning yields extensive control over wall slip., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) are thermonuclear explosions of degenerate white dwarf (WD) stars destabilized by mass accretion from a companion star, but the nature of their progenitors remains poorly understood. A way to discriminate between progenitor systems is through radio observations; a non-degenerate companion star is expected to lose material through winds or binary interaction prior to explosion, and the SN ejecta crashing into this nearby circumstellar material (CSM) should result in radio synchrotron emission. However, despite extensive efforts, no SN Ia has ever been detected at radio wavelengths, which suggests a clean environment and a companion star that is itself a degenerate WD star. Here we report on the study of SN 2020eyj, a SN Ia showing helium-rich CSM, as revealed by its spectral features, infrared emission and, for the first time in a SN Ia, a radio counterpart. Based on our modeling, we conclude the CSM likely originates from a single-degenerate (SD) binary system where a WD accretes material from a helium donor star, an often hypothesized formation channel for SNe Ia. This is the first part in a series of papers on counting surfaces on Calabi-Yau 4-folds. Besides the Hilbert scheme of 2-dimensional subschemes, we introduce \emph{two} types of moduli spaces of stable pairs. We show that all three moduli spaces are related by GIT wall-crossing and parametrize stable objects in the bounded derived category. We construct \emph{reduced} Oh-Thomas virtual cycles on the moduli spaces via Kiem-Li cosection localization and prove that they are deformation invariant along Hodge loci. As an application, we show that the variational Hodge conjecture holds for any family of Calabi-Yau 4-folds supporting a non-zero reduced virtual cycle., Comment: 150 pages
