3. Late Cretaceous and Early Paleogene Fluid Circulation and Microbial Activity in Deep Fracture Networks of the Precambrian Basement of Western Greenland.

Abstract

Deep fracture‐hosted fluids of Precambrian bedrock cratons are relatively stagnant over long time spans compared to near‐surface systems. However, episodic events, such as fracture reactivations, transgressions, and deglaciations, may introduce dilute water, replacing, and mixing with the deep continental brines, thereby sparking microbial activity. Secondary minerals that line bedrock fractures serve as important geochemical archives for such episodic events. Here we explore the fracture mineral record of Archean rocks of Western Greenland by analyzing samples from deep boreholes with the aim to trace and characterize episodic paleofluid flow and paleomicrobial activity. A sequence of hydrothermal to low temperature fluid flow events is demonstrated. For the youngest generation, microscale S‐isotope analysis of pyrite reveals substantial 34S‐depletion (minimum δ34S:−58‰V‐CDT) compared to fracture‐hosted barite (δ34S:13‰ ± 2‰) and gypsum (δ34S:2.6‰–10.6‰). This suggests the formation of pyrite following S isotope fractionation during microbial sulfate reduction. This metabolism is further indicated by several methyl‐branched fatty acids preserved in calcite. A general discrepancy between calcite and groundwater δ18O‐values suggests that calcite formed from water different from the presently residing glacial meltwater‐influenced groundwater mix. High spatial resolution U‐Pb carbonate geochronology of the youngest generation of calcite yielded ages for two samples: 64 ± 3, 75 ± 7 Ma (2σ). These ages overlap with tectonic events related to early stages, or prestages, of the opening of the Atlantic and Labrador Seas. This suggests that deep fracture networks in Western Greenland were colonized by microorganisms, such as sulfate reducers, in the course of this extensional event. Abstract

A Langmuir film is a molecularly thin film on the surface of a fluid; we study the evolution of a Langmuir film with two co-existing fluid phases driven by an inter-phase line tension and damped by the viscous drag of the underlying subfluid. Experimentally, we study an 8CB Langmuir film via digitally-imaged Brewster Angle Microscopy (BAM) in a four-roll mill setup which applies a transient strain and images the response. When a compact domain is stretched by the imposed strain, it first assumes a bola shape with two tear-drop shaped reservoirs connected by a thin tether which then slowly relaxes to a circular domain which minimizes the interfacial energy of the system. We process the digital images of the experiment to extract the domain shapes. We then use one of these shapes as an initial condition for the numerical solution of a boundary-integral model of the underlying hydrodynamics and compare the subsequent images of the experiment to the numerical simulation. The numerical evolutions first verify that our hydrodynamical model can reproduce the observed dynamics. They also allow us to deduce the magnitude of the line tension in the system, often to within 1%. 8. The scale of dirham imports to the Baltic in the ninth century: new evidence from archaeometric analyses of early Viking-Age silver

Abstract

We present a high precision, minimally-destructive geochemical (lead isotope and trace element) analysis of nine cast silver items from early Viking-Age hoards from the Baltic. Comparing the data to a large reference dataset comprising Islamic dirhams and ninth-century Western European silver, we find that the artefacts were cast chiefly from recycled Islamic silver. Isotopic modelling reveals, further, that the Islamic silver derives from a stock that entered the central Baltic in the first half of the ninth century. This period has traditionally been characterised as one of low-level dirham import, before the escalation of the dirham trade from c. AD 860/70. Our results suggest instead that dirhams entered the central Baltic in significant numbers before c. 850, but were routinely melted down for casting into artefacts. This has two important implications. First, it suggests that the early ninth-century Baltic economy was more closely coupled to Eurasian trade networks than current appreciated. Second, it calls into question the reliance on extant dirhams as a guide to Scandinavia’s engagement in long-distance trade routes.

Abstract

Purpose: The recent conditional FDA approval of Aducanumab (Adu) for treating Alzheimer's disease (AD) and the continued discussions around that decision have increased interest in immunotherapy for AD and other brain diseases. Reliable techniques for brain imaging of antibodies may guide decision-making in the future but needs further development. In this study, we used 89Zr-immuno-PET to evaluate the targeting and distribution of a bispecific brain-shuttle IgG based on Adu with transferrin receptor protein-1 (TfR1) shuttling mechanism, mAbAdu-scFab8D3, designated Adu-8D3, as a candidate theranostic for AD. We also validated the 89Zr-immuno-PET platform as an enabling technology for developing new antibody-based theranostics for brain disorders. Methods: Adu, Adu-8D3, and the non-binding control construct B12-8D3 were modified with DFO*-NCS and radiolabeled with 89Zr. APP/PS1 mice were injected with 89Zr-labeled mAbs and imaged on days 3 and 7 by positron emission tomography (PET). Ex vivo biodistribution was performed on day 7, and ex vivo autoradiography and immunofluorescence staining were done on brain tissue to validate the PET imaging results and target engagement with amyloid-β plaques. Additionally, [89Zr]Zr-DFO*-Adu-8D3 was evaluated in 3, 7, and 10-month-old APP/PS1 mice to test its potential in early stage disease. Results: A 7-fold higher brain uptake was observed for [89Zr]Zr-DFO*-Adu-8D3 compared to [89Zr]Zr-DFO*-Adu and a 2.7-fold higher uptake compared to [89Zr]Zr-DFO*-B12-8D3 on day 7. Autoradiography and immunofluorescence of [89Zr]Zr-DFO*-Adu-8D3 showed co-localization with amyloid plaques, which was not the case with the Adu and B12-8D3 conjugates. [89Zr]Zr-DFO*-Adu-8D3 was able to detect low plaque load in 3-month-old APP/PS1 mice. Conclusion: 89Zr-DFO*-immuno-PET revealed high and specific uptake of the bispecific Adu-8D3 in the brain and can be used for the early detection of Aβ plaque pathology. Here, we demonstrate that 89Zr-DFO*-immuno-PET can be used to visualize and quantify brain uptake of mAbs and contribute to the evaluation of biological therapeutics for brain diseases. Abstract

Geochronology of Th-rich minerals is advantageous as it allows use of three isotopic systems (i.e., Pb-206/U-238, Pb-207/U-235, and Pb-208/Th-232) for accurate data assessment. The Pb-208/Th-232 system is especially advantageous in cases where the dated mineral includes an initial Pb component, as Pb-208/Th-232 is the least sensitive to the effects of initial Pb amongst the three systems. This benefit is demonstrated with monazite from a white mica schist of the Tsakkok Lens, Scandinavian Caledonides, where three distinct generations of Paleozoic monazite (Mnzsingle bondI, Mnz-II, Mnz-III) are recognized and dated using laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry. The generations are interpreted to represent monazite crystallization in high-pressure conditions (Mnzsingle bondI), followed by lower-pressure monazite growth (Mnz-II), and likely dissolution-reprecipitation of the pre-existing monazite (Mnz-III). The results are compared in Tera-Wasserburg, Wetherill, and Th-U-Pb concordia space for each monazite generation. In both Tera-Wasserburg and Wetherill space, the data are all discordant and indicate an initial Pb component in the monazite. The trend and magnitude of discordance due to initial Pb in Mnz-I and Mnz-II is generally controlled by UO2 content of the monazite, with higher UO2 equating to greater radiogenic Pb and a dampening of the initial Pb effect, which is most prominent in the Pb-207/U-235 system. For the same generations, initial Pb discordance of Pb-206/U-238 versus Pb-208/Th-232 is less apparent due to the insensitivity of Pb-208/Th-232. Mnz-III does not follow the initial Pb trends, likely due to disturbance of the chemical and isotopic systems during recrystallization. Additional discordance in Mnz-I and Mnz-II, which is not related to initial Pb, is recognized and increases with actinide content. 18. Preliminary detrital zircon signatures from the southern Asir terrane, Saudi Arabia : A link to Yemen or the Nubian Shield?

Abstract

The Arabian Shield comprises early Neoproterozoic to Cambrian (similar to 850-530 Ma) tectonostratigraphic terranes formed by the closure and accretion of juvenile volcanic arcs and back-arc basins associated with Gondwana assembly. Unlike the Nubian Shield which preserves crustal isotopic signatures, the Arabian Shield is distinctly juvenile with the exception of the Paleoproterozoic (similar to 1800-1670 Ma) Khida subterrane in Saudi Arabia and the terranes of Yemen. This study presents the first combined zircon U-Pb, O and Hf isotope data of metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks from southwestern most Saudi Arabia, near the Yemen border - a region thought to contain some of the oldest (>815 Ma) lithologies in Saudi Arabia, including the Atura Formation and the Tayyah Belt. One volcaniclastic metasediment sample from the Atura Formation yields zircon U-Pb age peaks of 741, 672, 646 Ma (n = 131), delta O-18((V-SMOW)) ranging from 4.6 to 8.3 parts per thousand and epsilon(Hf) (t) from +7.7 to +12.5. Two samples from the Tayyah Belt include an older metasandstone and a late intruding granitic dyke which provides a minimum age for the Tayyah Belt. The former yields two significant U-Pb peaks of 812 (n = 8) and 999 (n = 6) Ma, delta O-18 and epsilon(Hf) (t) values ranging from 4.4 to 9.6 parts per thousand and -10.1 to +12.4, respectively; the later yields a concordia age of 645.8 [+/- 1.7] Ma (n = 29), delta O-18 ranging from 5.7 to 6.6 parts per thousand, and epsilon(Hf) (t) of +5.9 to +9.6. The zircon age and juvenile Hf signatures from the Atura Formation are consistent with the synorogenic phase in the Shield. Sedimentation was likely associated with arc volcanism during the previously documented eastward phase of accretion at similar to 740-640 Ma and the closure of the Mozambique Ocean. Abstract

RationaleStrontium isotope ratios (Sr-87/Sr-86) in modern-day marine environments are considered to be homogeneous (0.7092). However, in the Baltic Sea, the Sr ratios are controlled by mixing seawater and continental drainage from major rivers discharging into the Baltic. This pilot study explores if variations in Sr can be detected in marine mammals from archaeological sites in the Baltic Sea. Methods(87)Sr/Sr-86 ratios were measured in tooth enamel from three seal species by laser ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS). The method enables micro-sampling of solid materials. This is the first time that the method has been applied to marine samples from archaeological collections. ResultsThe analyses showed inter-tooth Sr-87/Sr-86 variation suggesting that different ratios can be detected in different regions of the Baltic Sea. Furthermore, the intra-tooth variation suggests possible different geographic origin or seasonal movement of seals within different regions in the Baltic Sea through their lifetime. ConclusionsThe method was successfully applied to archaeological marine samples showing that: (1) the Sr-87/Sr-86 ratio in marine environments is not uniform, (2) Sr-87/Sr-86 differences might reflect differences in ecology and life history of different seal species, and (3) archaeological mobility studies based on Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios in humans should therefore be evaluated together with diet reconstruction.

Abstract

The first inter-calibration study of the stable silicon isotope composition of dissolved silicic acid in seawater, d30Si(OH)4, is presented as a contribution to the international GEOTRACES program. Eleven laboratories from seven countries analyzed two seawater samples from the North Pacific subtropical gyre (Station ALOHA) collected at 300 m and at 1000 m water depth. Sampling depths were chosen to obtain samples with a relatively low (9 mmol L-1, 300 m) and a relatively high (113 mmol L-1, 1000 m) silicic acid concentration as sample preparation differs for low- and high concentration samples. Data for the 1000 m water sample were not normally distributed so the median is used to represent the central tendency for the two samples. Median d30Si(OH)4 values of +1.66‰ for the low-concentration sample and +1.25‰ for the high-concentration sample were obtained. Agreement among laboratories is overall considered very good; however, small but statistically significant differences among the mean isotope values obtained by different laboratories were detected, likely reflecting inter-laboratory differences in chemical preparation including preconcentration and purification methods together with different volumes of seawater analyzed, andthe use of different mass spectrometers including the Neptune MC-ICP-MS (Thermo Fisher™, Germany), the Nu Plasma MC-ICP-MS (Nu Instruments™, Wrexham, UK), and the Finnigan™ (now Thermo Fisher™, Germany) MAT 252 IRMS. Future studies analyzing d30Si(OH)4 in seawater should also analyze and report values for these same two reference waters in order to facilitate comparison of data generated among and within laboratories over time., GEOTRACES

Abstract

A study on the U-Pb age of rutile from the Ichetju polymineral occurrence has been done for the first time by LA-ICP-MS and TIMS methods. It was established that rutile originates from various sources with different ages (presumably, ca. 1000, 1660, 1860 and 1980 Ma), but all the rutile types have undergone a common thermal event at ca. 580 Ma. Obtained results are consistent with U-Pb zircon data for the Ichetju occurrence and the Pizhemskoe deposit. According to modern concepts, the closure temperature for the U-Pb system in rutile is higher than 500 С, which suggests fairly high-temperature conditions of the rutile hydrothermal transformation during the formation of the deposits in Riphean. Obviously, a placer hypothesis of formation of titanium deposits of the Middle Timan which is supported by a number of researchers does not explain such temperature of rutile alteration.

Abstract

We have measured the parity-violating electroweak asymmetry in the elastic scattering of polarized electrons from the proton. The result is A = -15.05 +- 0.98(stat) +- 0.56(syst) ppm at the kinematic point theta_lab = 12.3 degrees and Q^2 = 0.477 (GeV/c)^2. The measurement implies that the value for the strange form factor (G_E^s + 0.392 G_M^s) = 0.025 +- 0.020 +- 0.014, where the first error is experimental and the second arises from the uncertainties in electromagnetic form factors. This measurement is the first fixed-target parity violation experiment that used either a `strained' GaAs photocathode to produce highly polarized electrons or a Compton polarimeter to continuously monitor the electron beam polarization., 8 pages, 4 figures, Tex, elsart.cls; revised version as accepted for Phys. Abstract

The first complete measurements of the angular distributions of the two-body deuteron photodisintegration differential cross section at photon energies above 1.6 GeV were performed at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The results show a persistent forward-backward asymmetry up to Eγ = 2.4 GeV, the highest-energy measured in this experiment. The Hard Rescattering and the Quark-Gluon string models are in fair agreement with the results.

Abstract

We present measurements of the recoil proton polarization for the d(γ⃗,p⃗)n reaction at θc.m. = 90° for photon energies up to 2.4 GeV. These are the first data in this reaction for polarization transfer with circularly polarized photons. The induced polarization py vanishes above 1 GeV, contrary to meson-baryon model expectations, in which resonances lead to large polarizations. However, the polarization transfer Cx does not vanish above 1 GeV, inconsistent with hadron helicity conservation. Thus, we show that the scaling behavior observed in the d(γ,p)ncross sections is not a result of perturbative QCD. These data should provide important tests of new nonperturbative calculations in the intermediate energy regime.
