The importance of energy supply and demand has been emphasized over the past few years. Renewable energy without regional bias continues to attract attention. The improvement of the economic feasibility of renewable energy leads to the expansion of the supply, and the global supply of solar modules is also rapidly increasing. Recently, the price of polysilicon for solar modules is also rising significantly. Interest in recycling waste modules is also increasing. However, the development of cost-effective treatment technology for solar modules that have reached the end of their commercial useful life is still insufficient. We are going to propose the standards necessary to restore and reuse so-called waste solar modules in a more eco-friendly and economical way. A crystalline solar module is an aggregate of individual solar cells. The technology is stable and has good durability. The efficiency of crystalline solar cells has dramatically improved in recent decades. The grade of cell that was mainly used two or three years ago will be discontinued soon. Therefore, electrical mismatch of the cells occurs while repairing an old-manufactured module with recently produced cells. In this paper, we experimentally verify how the increase in cell mismatch affects the module output. We intend to suggest the range of acceptable mismatches by analyzing the tendency. First of all, we repaired and restored the module in which all the existing cells were discontinued after about 10 years of production. The replacement cell had 16.94% higher output than the existing cells. After restoring the module, it was confirmed that the electrical mismatch loss of the cell in this range was very small, about 1.69%. Second, the mismatch loss was confirmed by manufacturing a module by mixing the two cells. The difference in output between the two cells was 5.56%. The mismatch loss compared to the predicted value based on the output of the individual cell and the actual value was very small, less than 0.76%. The long-term reliability results through the DH 1000 hr experiment on the sample that simulated the situation of repair, and the rest of the samples also showed a decrease in output up to 1.13%, which was not a problem. Finally, we hypothesized that a series-connected array should be constructed by reusing modules with different output classes. By cutting into 1/4, 1/3, and 1/2 of cells of the same grade, various unit module samples composed of 0.5 cells to 2.0 cells were manufactured and the output was measured. Electrical mismatch loss was tested by serially combining each unit module at various mismatch ratios. It was confirmed that the output loss in the three or more samples similarly exceeds about 10% with the mismatch ratio of 50% as the starting point. In the previous study, when the mismatch ratio was 70%, the output loss was about 17.98%. The output loss was 18.30% at 86.57%, 17.33% at 77.33%, and 14.37% at 75%. Considering that it is a value measured in a wide range, it is a result that is quite consistent with the results of previous studies. When the cell output difference was less than 50%, the electrical mismatch of the cell had no significant effect on the module output. When it exceeds that, a sudden output loss of 10% or more begins to occur. Consequently, the mismatch range of compatible cells should be less than 50%. If it exceeds that, not only output loss but also safety problems may occur due to heat generation. We can offer a range of interchangeable cell output power when crystalline solar modules are repaired and reused. By recycling modules with different outputs, you can provide a standard for those who want to use it by composing an array. By extending the lifespan of a solar module once used, it is expected that the generation of waste can be reduced from environmental point of view and the resources required to manufacture a new module can be saved from the resource-circulation point of view.

When the thickness of the solar cell wafer and the amount of Ag to be used decreases, it is the best method to recover the power of the module after use at a minimum cost and reuse the module itself. Economic recovery technology can be applied to the power degradation, caused by the resistive solder bond (RSB) hotspot by poor soldering, because the recovery process can be simplified compared to the power loss that is often greater than 30%. This study demonstrated a quick recovery of the RSB hotspot with on-site recovery technology applied with resin and verified the performance and long-term reliability of on-site recovery technology, compared to the factory recovery method, where the back sheet is removed and laminated to recover the module. Both the factory and field recovery methods confirmed recovery results closer to the initial rated power output of the samples. Each sample was degraded by the RSB hotspot to ~62–65% of the initial power output, and the recovery process successfully recovered it to ~96–99%. In on-site recovery, verification of the possible EVA solvothermal swelling, which is the effect of organic solvents contained in the resin on EVA, is essential for verifying the long-term reliability of the recovered module. In this study, the power degradations of the on-site recovered samples after a TC 200 cycle test are −2.14% and −0.95%, respectively, which are within the certification test standard of the new manufacturing module. Existing factory recovery costs not only in the recovery process, but also in a total of 22 stages, such as the transfer of the target module. The largest advantage is that the on-site recovery process can be restarted in the field after only eight stages.

Keyphrase Prediction (KP) is essential for identifying keyphrases in a document that can summarize its content. However, recent Natural Language Processing (NLP) advances have developed more efficient KP models using deep learning techniques. The limitation of a comprehensive exploration jointly both keyphrase extraction and generation using pre-trained language models spotlights a critical gap in the literature, compelling our survey paper to bridge this deficiency and offer a unified and in-depth analysis to address limitations in previous surveys. This paper extensively examines the topic of pre-trained language models for keyphrase prediction (PLM-KP), which are trained on large text corpora via different learning (supervisor, unsupervised, semi-supervised, and self-supervised) techniques, to provide respective insights into these two types of tasks in NLP, precisely, Keyphrase Extraction (KPE) and Keyphrase Generation (KPG). We introduce appropriate taxonomies for PLM-KPE and KPG to highlight these two main tasks of NLP. Moreover, we point out some promising future directions for predicting keyphrases.

Abstract Although gliomatosis cerebri (GC) has been removed as an independent tumor type from the WHO classification, its extensive infiltrative pattern may harbor a unique biological behavior. However, the clinical implication of GC in the context of the 2021 WHO classification is yet to be unveiled. This study investigated the incidence, clinicopathologic and imaging correlations, and prognostic implications of GC in adult-type diffuse glioma patients. Retrospective chart and imaging review of 1,211 adult-type diffuse glioma patients from a single institution between 2005 and 2021 was performed. Among 1,211 adult-type diffuse glioma patients, there were 99 (8.2%) patients with GC. The proportion of molecular types significantly differed between patients with and without GC (P = 0.017); IDH-wildtype glioblastoma was more common (77.8% vs. 66.5%), while IDH-mutant astrocytoma (16.2% vs. 16.9%) and oligodendroglioma (6.1% vs. 16.5%) were less common in patients with GC than in those without GC. The presence of contrast enhancement, necrosis, cystic change, hemorrhage, and GC type 2 were independent risk factors for predicting IDH mutation status in GC patients. GC remained as an independent prognostic factor (HR = 1.25, P = 0.031) in IDH-wildtype glioblastoma patients on multivariable analysis, along with clinical, molecular, and surgical factors. Overall, our data suggests that although no longer included as a distinct pathological entity in the WHO classification, recognition of GC may be crucial considering its clinical significance. There is a relatively high incidence of GC in adult-type diffuse gliomas, with different proportion according to molecular types between patients with and without GC. Imaging may preoperatively predict the molecular type in GC patients and may assist clinical decision-making. The prognostic role of GC promotes its recognition in clinical settings.

Background/Aims: Endoscopic papillectomy (EP) is increasingly used as an alternative to surgery for managing benign ampullary neoplasms. However, post-EP resection margins are often positive or indeterminate, and there is no consensus on the management of ampullary adenomas with positive or indeterminate margins after EP. This study was designed to compare the long-term outcomes between resected margin-negative (RMN) and resected margin-positive/indeterminate (RMPI) groups and to identify factors associated with clinical outcomes. Methods: This retrospective analysis included patients with ampullary adenoma without evidence of adenocarcinoma who underwent EP between 2004 and 2016. The RMN and RMPI groups were compared for recurrence rates and recurrence-free duration during a mean follow-up duration of 71.7±39.8 months. Factors related to clinical outcomes were identified using multivariate analysis. Results: Of the 129 patients who underwent EP, 82 were in the RMN group and 47 were in the RMPI group. The RMPI group exhibited a higher recurrence rate compared to the RMN group (14.6% vs 34.0%, p=0.019). However, the recurrence-free duration was not significantly different between the groups (34.7±32.6 months vs 36.2±27.4 months, p=0.900). Endoscopic treatment successfully managed recurrence in both groups (75% vs 75%). Submucosal injection was a significant risk factor for residual lesions (hazard ratio, 4.11; p=0.009) and recurrence (hazard ratio, 2.57; p=0.021). Conclusion : s: Although ampullary adenomas with positive or indeterminate margins after EP showed a higher rate of recurrence at long-term follow-up, endoscopic treatment was effective with favorable long-term outcomes. Submucosal injection prior to resection was associated with increased risk of recurrence and residual lesions.

Abstract The bioartificial liver (BAL) system can potentially rescue acute liver failure (ALF) patients by providing partial liver function until a suitable donor liver can be found or the native liver has self-regenerated. In this study, we established a suitable cryopreservation process for the development of an off-the-shelf BAL system. The viability of hepatocyte spheroids cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen was comparable to that of fresh primary hepatocyte spheroids. When hepatocyte spheroids were subjected to cryopreservation in a deep freezer, no statistically significant differences were observed in ammonia removal rate or urea secretion rate based on the cryopreservation period. However, the functional activity of the liver post-cryopreservation in a deep freezer was significantly lower than that observed following liquid nitrogen cryopreservation. Moreover, cryopreserving spheroid hydrogel beads in a deep freezer resulted in a significant decrease (approximately 30%) in both ammonia removal and urea secretion rates compared to the group cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen. The viabilities of spheroid hydrogel beads filled into the bioreactor of a BAL system were similar across all four groups. However, upon operating the BAL system for 24 h, the liver function activity was significantly higher in the group comprising hydrogel beads generated after thawing hepatocyte spheroids cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen. Consequently, the manufacturing of beads after the cryopreservation of hepatocyte spheroids is deemed the most suitable method, considering efficiency, economic feasibility, and liver function activity, for producing a BAL system.

Background: Few studies have been conducted to identify solid phase speciation of trace elements within the interior of airborne particles, although the adverse effects of ambient particles are closely related to the speciation of toxic elements and therefore the identification of chemical binding sites and solid phase associations is essential for assessing the impacts of trace elements in ambient air on environmental quality and human health. Objective: A combined use of focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) patterns from transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was applied with an energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) to investigate the solid phase speciation of trace elements within the interior of dust dry deposition obtained from an urban area. Results: The study results using the high-resolution microscopic techniques for the characterization of nano- and micron-sized particles revealed lead chromate for Pb and Cr6+, barite for Ba, rutile for Ti, and calcite, gypsum, and quicklime for Ca within the carbon matrix, implying their traffic-related sources. Fe oxides were observed for Fe, Mn, Ni, and Cr3+, with cerianite and Fe-La alloys for rare earth elements (REEs). Conclusions: Three types of anthropogenic sources were inferred based on the morphology and texture of the solid phases, as well as their primary usage: traffic road marking paints for Pb, Cr6+, Ba, and Ti, cement materials for Ca, and industrial activities for Fe, Mn, Ni, Cr3+, and REEs. The presence of submicron-sized toxic metal-bearing particles in dust dry deposition indicated that the toxic metals (i.e., Pb, Cr6+) can penetrate into the respiratory system along with the nanoparticles. The study results demonstrate that the solid phase speciation of trace elements detected using FIB-SEM and TEM-SAED can be effectively utilized for the identification of sources and the assessment of chemical toxicity of atmospheric dust.

The COVID-19 Vaccine Safety Research Committee (CoVaSC) was established in November 2021 to address the growing need for independent, in-depth scientific evidence on adverse events (AEs) following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination. This initiative was requested by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency and led by the National Academy of Medicine of Korea. In September 2022, the COVID-19 Vaccine Safety Research Center was established, strengthening CoVaSC’s initiatives. The center has conducted various studies on the safety of COVID-19 vaccines. During CoVaSC’s second research year, from September 29, 2022 to July 19, 2023, the center was restructured into 4 departments: Epidemiological Research, Clinical Research, Communication & Education, and International Cooperation & Policy Research. Its main activities include (1) managing CoVaSC and the COVID-19 Vaccine Safety Research Center, (2) surveying domestic and international trends in AE causality investigation, (3) assessing AEs following COVID-19 vaccination, (4) fostering international collaboration and policy research, and (5) organizing regular fora and training sessions for the public and clinicians. Causality assessments have been conducted for 27 diseases, and independent research has been conducted after organizing ad hoc committees comprising both epidemiologists and clinical experts on each AE of interest. The research process included protocol development, data analysis, interpretation of results, and causality assessment. These research outcomes have been shared transparently with the public and healthcare experts through various fora. The COVID-19 Vaccine Safety Research Center plans to continue strengthening and expanding its research activities to provide reliable, high-quality safety information to the public.

Abstract Objectives To assess whether a deep learning-based system (DLS) with black-blood imaging for brain metastasis (BM) improves the diagnostic workflow in a multi-center setting. Materials and methods In this retrospective study, a DLS was developed in 101 patients and validated on 264 consecutive patients (with lung cancer) having newly developed BM from two tertiary university hospitals, which performed black-blood imaging between January 2020 and April 2021. Four neuroradiologists independently evaluated BM either with segmented masks and BM counts provided (with DLS) or not provided (without DLS) on a clinical trial imaging management system (CTIMS). To assess reading reproducibility, BM count agreement between the readers and the reference standard were calculated using limits of agreement (LoA). Readers’ workload was assessed with reading time, which was automatically measured on CTIMS, and were compared between with and without DLS using linear mixed models considering the imaging center. Results In the validation cohort, the detection sensitivity and positive predictive value of the DLS were 90.2% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 88.1–92.2) and 88.2% (95% CI: 85.7–90.4), respectively. The difference between the readers and the reference counts was larger without DLS (LoA: −0.281, 95% CI: −2.888, 2.325) than with DLS (LoA: −0.163, 95% CI: −2.692, 2.367). A flat crack, Ω, is lying in a three-dimensional homogenous isotropic elastic solid subjected to shear loading. A mathematical formulation is developed based on the mixed boundary values for Ω such that the problem of finding the resulting force can be written in the form of hypersingular integral equation. Employing conformal mapping, the integral equation is transformed to a similar equation over a circular region, D. By making a suitable representation of hypersingular integral equation, the problem is reduced to solve a system of linear equations. Numerical solution for the shear stress intensity factors, maximum stress intensity, and strain energy release rate is obtained. Our results give an excellent agreement to the existing asymptotic solutions.

Four species of dominant wild animals, namely, Prionailurus bengalensis euptilurus, Nyctereutes procyonoides koreensis, Hydropotes inermis argyropus, and Sus scrofa coreanus, are hosts of potential infectious agents, including helminths and protozoa. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the infectious agents present in these wild animals to monitor and control the spread of pathogens. In the present study, fecal samples from 51 wild animals were collected from the mountains of Yangpyeong, Hoengseong, and Cheongyang in South Korea and metabarcoding of the V9 region of the 18S rRNA gene was performed to identify various parasite species that infect these wild animals. Genes from nematodes, such as Metastrongylus sp., Strongyloides spp., Ancylostoma sp., and Toxocara sp., were detected in the fecal samples from wild animals. In addition, platyhelminthes, including Spirometra sp., Echinostomatidae gen. sp., Alaria sp., Neodiplostomum sp., and Clonorchis sp., and protozoa, including Entamoeba sp., Blastocystis sp., Isospora sp., Tritrichomonas sp., Pentatrichomonas sp., and Cryptosporidium sp., were detected. In the present study, various parasites infecting wild animals were successfully identified using metabarcoding. Our technique may play a crucial role in monitoring parasites within wild animals, especially those causing zoonoses.

Near-edge X-ray absorption fine-structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy is a powerful tool for identifying chemical bonding states at synchrotron radiation facilities. Advances in new materials require researchers in both academia and industry to measure tens to hundreds of samples during the available beam time on a synchrotron beamline, which is typically allocated to users. Automated measurement methods, along with analysis software, have been developed for beamlines. Automated measurements facilitate high-throughput experiments and accumulate vast amounts of measured spectral data. The analysis software supports various functions for analyzing the experimental data; however, these analysis methods are complicated, and learning them can be time-consuming. To process large amounts of spectral data, a new analysis software, dedicated to NEXAFS spectroscopy, that is easy to use and can provide results in a short time is desired. Herein, the development of Beagle is described, software calculating molecular orientation from NEXAFS spectroscopy data that can report results in a short time comparable with that required to measure one sample at the beamline. It was designed to progress in a single sequence from data loading to the printing of the results with a `click of a button'. The functions of the software include recognizing the dataset, correcting the background, normalizing the plot, calculating the electron yield and determining the molecular orientation. The analysis results can be saved as {\tt{.txt}} files (spectral data), {\tt{.pdf}} files (graphic images) and Origin files (spectral data and graphic images).

Cervical spinal deformity (CSD) is a complex condition characterized by abnormal curvature and cervical spine alignment. It can lead to a multitude of symptoms, including chronic pain, neurological deficits, and functional impairments, severely impacting an individual’s health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Surgical intervention is often necessary to address the deformity and alleviate symptoms, but optimal surgical strategies remain a topic of ongoing research and debate. This narrative review aims to provide an in-depth overview of the surgical management of CSD, focusing on optimizing patient outcomes and enhancing readers’ understanding of the complexities involved. We begin by discussing the importance of preoperative assessment, including comprehensive radiographic evaluation and careful consideration of the global spinal alignment. The relationship between the cervical spine and the reciprocal changes that occur are explored to guide surgeons in their decision-making process. Furthermore, we delve into the selection of fusion levels, emphasizing the significance of identifying the primary driver of deformity. We review the current literature on optimal alignment targets and strategies to optimize surgical planning. By providing a comprehensive analysis of the surgical management of CSD, this review aims to enhance the readers’ knowledge and assist surgeons in making informed decisions when planning and executing surgical interventions. Understanding the intricacies of CSD correction and the latest advancements in the field can ultimately improve patient outcomes and enhance HRQoL for individuals suffering from this challenging condition.

Abstract We found that barn swallow (Hirundo rustica) breeding occurs within close proximity to humans. An evaluation of barn swallow breeding frequency and the breeding success rate of swallows at research sites, which were buildings inhabited by humans and buildings where humans had previously resided, was conducted in order to establish a relationship between the location of barn swallow nests and human habitation and activity frequency. The results demonstrated that barn swallows often breed in human-inhabited buildings. No significant relationship was observed between the wall material and the direction of the wall and the type of building, whereas a much higher proportion of the nests were located near doors with a high level of human movement. In addition, no significant correlation was observed between the location of the nest and the distance from potential resources (food, water etc.), however, a statistically significant relationship was observed between the frequency of human activity measured through the video camera and the number of nests located at a certain distance. The average number of offspring and the reproductive success rate were higher in nests located within close proximity to human activity compared to nests not located within close proximity to human activity, suggesting that the presence of humans had a positive effect on reproduction. This study show that barn swallow nesting occurs in locations where there is a human influence and humans provide implicit protection of swallows from predation, which has a significant impact on breeding.

To mitigate unforeseen incidents, such as key block failure or tunnel collapse during excavation, an appropriate support pattern that correlates with the geological conditions of the rock mass at the tunnel face should be designed. Rock mass evaluations should be conducted through geological face mapping during the construction phase, alongside predictions based on field investigations during the design phase. When marked discrepancies are identified, it is customary to convene an on-site evaluation involving a committee of experts. This study develops a digital tunnel face mapping system that utilises mobile devices to facilitate online evaluations during the construction phase. This system effectively replaces the traditional on-site field evaluation method. Tunnel face mapping can be promptly accomplished using images captured at the excavation face, enabling rapid analysis. In conjunction with the mapping capabilities, the developed system was designed to digitally store geological information, which includes parameters such as rock strength distribution, the spacing and length of discontinuities observed during the mapping process, as well as data pertaining to weathering and the groundwater conditions of those discontinuities. This information was then correlated with the rock mass rating sheet to automate the determination of ratings for each parameter, ultimately leading to a conclusive classification of the rock mass quality. By employing this system for tunnel face mapping and rock quality evaluation, we significantly reduced the discrepancies in the evaluation results that often arise due to the subjective judgement of geologists, as well as human errors that can occur throughout the rating process.

The widespread use of wireless communication devices has necessitated unavoidable exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF). In particular, increasing RF-EMF exposure among children is primarily driven by mobile phone use. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of 1850 MHz RF-EMF exposure at a specific absorption rate of 4.0 W/kg on cortical neurons in mice at postnatal day 28. The results indicated a significant reduction in the number of mushroom-shaped dendritic spines in the prefrontal cortex after daily exposure for 4 weeks. Additionally, prolonged RF-EMF exposure over 9 days led to a gradual decrease in postsynaptic density 95 puncta and inhibited neurite outgrowth in developing cortical neurons. Moreover, the expression levels of genes associated with synapse formation, such as synaptic cell adhesion molecules and cyclin-dependent kinase 5, were reduced in the cerebral cortexes of RF-EMF-exposed mice. Behavioral assessments using the Morris water maze revealed altered spatial learning and memory after the 4-week exposure period. These findings underscore the potential of RF-EMF exposure during childhood to disrupt synaptic function in the cerebral cortex, thereby affecting the developmental stages of the nervous system and potentially influencing later cognitive function.

Background and Objectives: Lateral ankle injuries are commonly encountered injuries, and the open modified Broström operation (OMBO) is the primary treatment option. Recently, an arthroscopic modification of the Broström operation (AMBO) was developed; many studies have shown that there are no significant differences in clinical and radiological outcomes between the two surgical methods. However, no studies have been conducted comparing the two surgical methods in terms of return to play (RTP) time. This study assesses the time to RTP and the functional clinical outcomes. Materials and Methods: Sixty patients were enrolled from January 2012 to July 2014. They were segregated into two cohorts: the AMBO group comprised 30 patients, while the OMBO group comprised another 30 patients. Each participant underwent standardized treatment and rehabilitation regimens and RTP time was measured using seven questions that explored the times to return of painless walking, running, jumping, squatting, climbing stairs, and rising up on the heels and toes. We compared the time intervals from the onset of instability to the date of surgery. Clinical outcomes were evaluated before the surgery, 6 weeks after surgery, and 6 months after surgery. The assessments included the American Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) ankle–hindfoot score, the pain visual analog scale (VAS) score, subjective satisfaction with rehabilitation, and activity level. Results: In terms of RTP, AMBO was associated with a shorter interval to walking without pain (7.07 ± 2.96 weeks) relative to OMBO (11.03 ± 8.58 weeks). No disparities were observed in the time to return to play (RTP) between OMBO and AMBO. While there were no discrepancies in the 6-month postoperative AOFAS or VAS scores, the 6-week postoperative VAS score was notably lower in the AMBO group compared to the OMBO group. AMBO provided a faster RTP in terms of two of the seven questions in a group exhibiting high-level physical activity. The rate of subjective satisfaction with rehabilitation was higher for AMBO than for OMBO. Conclusions: Aside from walking, the duration to return to play and the clinical outcomes were similar between AMBO and OMBO treatments for lateral ankle instability. AMBO is a good treatment option and should be carefully considered for athletes with lateral ankle instability. AMBO demonstrated positive outcomes in a group with higher activity levels compared to others, particularly in terms of time to RTP, subjective satisfaction, and postoperative pain.

Background/Aims: There are limitations in treating ampullary adenomas with intraductal extension using conventional endoscopic modalities. Endoscopic intraductal radiofrequency ablation (ID-RFA) may be useful for treating intraductal (common bile duct [CBD] and/or pancreatic duct [PD]) extensions of ampullary adenomas, but long-term data are lacking. We thus evaluated the long-term outcomes of endoscopic ID-RFA for managing ampullary adenomas with intraductal extension. Methods: Prospectively collected endoscopic ID-RFA database at Asan Medical Center was reviewed to identify consecutive patients with ampullary adenoma who underwent ID-RFA for intraductal extension between January 2018 and August 2021. Technical success, short-term and long-term clinical success, and adverse events were evaluated. Results: A total of 29 patients (14 CBD, 1 PD, and 14 CBD and PD) were analyzed. All patients had undergone endoscopic snare papillectomy prior to ID-RFA. A median of one session of ID-RFA (range, 1 to 3) for residual or relapsed intraductal extension of ampullary adenoma were successfully performed (technical success=100%). Both biliary and pancreatic stenting were routinely performed after ID-RFA to prevent ductal stricture. After a median follow-up of 776 days (interquartile range, 470 to 984 days), the short-term and long-term clinical success rates were 93% and 76%, respectively. Seven patients experienced procedural adverse events and three patients developed ductal strictures. Conclusions: Endoscopic ID-RFA showed good long-term outcomes in treating residual or relapsed ampullary adenomas with intraductal extension. Repeated ID-RFA may be considered as an option for managing recurrence. Further studies are needed to standardize the procedure.

Background and objectives: Diabetic foot stands out as one of the most consequential and devastating complications of diabetes. Many factors, including VIPS (Vascular management, Infection management, Pressure relief, and Source of healing), influence the prognosis and treatment of diabetic foot patients. There are many studies on VIPS, but relatively few studies on “sources of healing”. Nutrients that affect wound healing are known, but objective data in diabetic foot patients are insufficient. We hypothesized that “sources of healing” would have many effects on wound healing. The purpose of this study is to know the affecting factors related to the source of healing for diabetic foot patients. Materials and Methods: A retrospective review identified 46 consecutive patients who were admitted for diabetic foot management from July 2019 to April 2021 at our department. Several laboratory tests were performed for influencing factor evaluation. We checked serum levels of total protein, albumin, vitamin B, iron, zinc, magnesium, copper, Hb, HbA1c, HDL cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol. These values of diabetic foot patients were compared with normal values. Patients were divided into two groups based on wound healing rate, age, length of hospital stay, and sex, and the test values between the groups were compared. Results: Levels of albumin (37%) and Hb (89%) were low in the diabetic foot patients. As for trace elements, levels of iron (97%) and zinc (95%) were low in the patients, but levels of magnesium and copper were usually normal or high. There were no differences in demographic characteristics based on wound healing rate. However, when compared to normal adult values, diabetic foot patients in our data exhibited significantly lower levels of hemoglobin, total protein, albumin, iron, zinc, copper, and HDL cholesterol. When compared based on age and length of hospital stay, hemoglobin levels were significantly lower in both the older age group and the group with longer hospital stays. Conclusions: Serum levels of albumin, Hb, iron, and zinc were very low in most diabetic foot patients. These low values may have a negative relationship with wound healing. Nutrient replacements are necessary for wound healing in diabetic foot patients.

Soft tissue calcifications frequently appear on imaging studies, representing a prevalent but non-specific discovery, varying from a local reaction without clear cause to suggesting an underlying systemic condition. Because calcifications like these can arise from various causes, an accurate differential diagnosis is crucial. Differential diagnosis entails a methodical assessment of the patient, encompassing clinical presentation, medical history, radiological and pathological findings, and other pertinent factors. Through scrutiny of the patient’s medical and trauma history, we can refine potential causes of calcification to vascular, metabolic, autoimmune, neoplastic, or traumatic origins. Furthermore, routine laboratory assessments, including serum levels of calcium, phosphorus, ionized calcium, vitamin D metabolites, and parathyroid hormone (PTH), aid in identifying metabolic etiologies. We describe a rare occurrence of osteoma cutis in a 15-year-old female patient with a history of pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) and Albright’s hereditary osteodystrophy (AHO). The patient presented with a painful mass on the lateral side of her left foot. The diagnosis was based on medical history, laboratory tests, and imaging, leading to an excisional biopsy and complete pain relief post-surgery. Understanding such rare occurrences and related conditions is crucial for accurate diagnosis and management.

This study was conducted as an effort to examine the association between mammalian species richness and environmental, anthropogenic, and bioclimate factors in the Province of Chungnam, Korea, using a stacked species distribution model (SSDM) approach. An SSDM model was constructed using an extensive dataset collected from 1357 mammal sampling points and their corresponding forest, geographical, anthropogenic, and bioclimatic information. Distance to forest edge, elevation, slope, population density, and distance to water channels were identified as important variables for determining species richness, whereas the impact of bioclimate variables was less important. The endemism map showed a strong correlation with species richness, suggesting the important role of endemic species. Overestimation was observed in areas with lower species richness. However, the findings of the study still demonstrated that valuable insights can be obtained through the use of the SSDM, which may be helpful to land managers, aiding in the effective management of wildlife habitats, particularly in regions with an abundance of species richness and endemism.

OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to explore the association between adherence to 2 cancer prevention recommendations and cancer risk. METHODS In total, 104,386 individuals aged 40-69 years old who were recruited between 2004 and 2013 in the Health Examinees-Gem study were included. Adherence scores were constructed based on 8 items from the World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research (WCRF/AICR) cancer prevention recommendations, including body weight, physical activity, diet, alcohol consumption and breastfeeding, and on 6 items from the Korean cancer prevention guidelines (smoking status, eating vegetables and fruits, salty foods, alcohol intake, physical activity, and body weight). A Cox proportional hazards model was used to estimate the associations between adherence scores and the risk of total and 5 major cancers. RESULTS The multivariable hazard ratio (HR) for total cancer with the high adherence score versus the lowest score (4.25-7.00 vs. 0.00-3.25) for the WCRF/AICR guidelines was 0.91 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.82 to 1.00) in men. A reduced breast cancer risk was observed among women with the highest score. Men within the highest category of the Korean cancer prevention guideline score (3.25-6.00) had an HR of 0.80 (95% CI, 0.73 to 0.88) for developing total cancer compared to men within the lowest score (0.00-2.50). The higher adherence group among men showed lower risks of developing stomach, colorectal, and lung cancers. CONCLUSIONS Adhering to guidelines for cancer prevention can help to reduce the risk of developing cancer in Korean men. The association might differ by cancer type and gender.

Particulate and gaseous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) samples (n = 108) were measured every six days from January to December 2022 at a representative point in the Korean Banwol National Industrial Complex. The measurement results revealed that the concentration of particulate Σ18 PAHs was 7.92 ± 4.04 ng/Sm3 in winter, 1.83 ± 1.99 ng/Sm3 in spring, 1.43 ± 0.95 ng/Sm3 in summer, and 2.58 ± 2.14 ng/Sm3 in autumn. The concentration of gaseous Σ18 PAHs was 3.32 ± 3.72 ng/Sm3 in winter, 6.34 ± 5.95 ng/Sm3 in spring, 8.33 ± 8.13 ng/Sm3 in summer, and 3.88 ± 1.71 ng/Sm3 in autumn. The results of the correlation analysis showed that particulate PAHs have positive relationships with PM10 and PM2.5 and negative relationships with temperature and O3. The diagnostic ratio and PAHs component slope showed that the emission source characteristics of the Banwol National Industrial Complex were dominated by biomass coal combustion over four seasons; however, the influence of petroleum combustion (automobile emissions) was not negligible. As for coal combustion, bituminous coal was the most influential, and lignite was relevant in summer and autumn.

Abstract The interplay between schizophrenia liability and environmental influences has been considered to be responsible for the development of schizophrenia. Recent neuroimaging studies have linked aberrant functional connectivity (FC) between the default-mode network (DMN) and the frontoparietal network (FPN) in the resting-state to the underlying neural mechanism of schizophrenia. By using schizotypy as the proxy for genetic-based liability to schizophrenia and methylation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) to represent environmental exposure, this study investigated the impact of the interaction between vulnerability and the environment on the neurobiological substrates of schizophrenia. Participants in this study included 101 healthy adults (HC) and 46 individuals with ultra-high risk for psychosis (UHR). All participants were tested at resting-state by functional magnetic resonance imaging, and group-independent component analysis was used to identify the DMN and the FPN. The Perceptual Aberration Scale (PAS) was used to evaluate the schizotypy level. The methylation status of BDNF was measured by pyrosequencing. For moderation analysis, the final sample consisted of 83 HC and 32 UHR individuals. UHR individuals showed reduced DMN-FPN network FC compared to healthy controls. PAS scores significantly moderated the relationship between the percentage of BDNF methylation and DMN-FPN network FC. The strength of the positive relationship between BDNF methylation and the network FC was reduced when the schizotypy level increased. These findings support the moderating role of schizotypy on the neurobiological mechanism of schizophrenia in conjunction with epigenetic changes.

Purpose: This study aimed to develop and validate a convolutional neural network (CNN) that automatically detects an aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA) on preoperative computed tomography (CT) for thyroid cancer evaluation. Materials and Methods: A total of 556 CT with ARSA and 312 CT with normal aortic arch from one institution were used as the training set for model development. A deep learning model for the classification of patch images for ARSA was developed using two-dimension CNN from EfficientNet. The diagnostic performance of our model was evaluated using external test sets (112 and 126 CT) from two institutions. The performance of the model was compared with that of radiologists for detecting ARSA using an independent dataset of 1683 consecutive neck CT. Results: The performance of the model was achieved using two external datasets with an area under the curve of 0.97 and 0.99, and accuracy of 97% and 99%, respectively. In the temporal validation set, which included a total of 20 patients with ARSA and 1663 patients without ARSA, radiologists overlooked 13 ARSA cases. In contrast, the CNN model successfully detected all the 20 patients with ARSA. Conclusion: We developed a CNN-based deep learning model that detects ARSA using CT.
