We present JWST NIRCam (F356W and F444W filters) and MIRI (F770W) images and NIRSpec- IFU spectroscopy of the young supernova remnant Cassiopeia A (Cas A). We obtained the data as part of a JWST survey of Cas A. The NIRCam and MIRI images map the spatial distributions of synchrotron radiation, Ar-rich ejecta, and CO on both large and small scales, revealing remarkably complex structures. The CO emission is stronger at the outer layers than the Ar ejecta, which indicates the reformation of CO molecules behind the reverse shock. NIRSpec-IFU spectra (3 - 5.5 microns) were obtained toward two representative knots in the NE and S fields. Both regions are dominated by the bright fundamental rovibrational band of CO in the two R and P branches, with strong [Ar VI] and relatively weaker, variable strength ejecta lines of [Si IX], [Ca IV], [Ca V] and [Mg IV]. The NIRSpec-IFU data resolve individual ejecta knots and filaments spatially and in velocity space. The fundamental CO band in the JWST spectra reveals unique shapes of CO, showing a few tens of sinusoidal patterns of rovibrational lines with pseudo-continuum underneath, which is attributed to the high-velocity widths of CO lines. The CO also shows high J lines at different vibrational transitions. Our results with LTE modeling of CO emission indicate a temperature of 1080 K and provide unique insight into the correlations between dust, molecules, and highly ionized ejecta in supernovae, and have strong ramifications for modeling dust formation that is led by CO cooling in the early Universe., Comment: accepted for the ApJ letter (17 pages and 10 figures)

We present the detections of shocked molecular hydrogen (H2) gas in near- and mid-infrared and broad CO in millimeter from the mixed-morphology supernova remnant (SNR) HB~3 (G132.7+1.3) using Palomar WIRC, the Spitzer GLIMPSE360 and WISE surveys, and HHSMT. Our near-infrared narrow-band filter H2 2.12 micron images of HB~3 show that both Spitzer IRAC and WISE 4.6 micron emission originates from shocked H2 gas. The morphology of H2 exhibits thin filamentary structures and a large scale of interaction sites between the HB~3 and nearby molecular clouds. Half of HB~3, the southern and eastern shell of the SNR, emits H2 in a shape of a "butterfly" or "W", indicating the interaction sites between the SNR and dense molecular clouds. Interestingly, the H2 emitting region in the southeast is also co-spatial to the interacting area between HB~3 and the H~II regions of the W3 complex, where we identified star-forming activity. We further explore the interaction between HB~3 and dense molecular clouds with detections of broad CO(3-2) and CO(2-1) molecular lines from the southern and southeastern shells along the H2 emitting region. The widths of the broad lines are 8-20 km/s; the detection of such broad lines is unambiguous, dynamic evidence of the interactions between the SNR and clouds. The CO broad lines are from two branches of the bright, southern H2 shell. We apply the Paris-Durham shock model to the CO line profiles, which infer the shock velocities of 20 - 40 km/s, relatively low densities of 10^{3-4} cm^{-3} and strong (>200 micro Gauss) magnetic fields., Comment: ApJ, in press, 21 pages, 16 figures

We report synthesis and magnetic properties of quasi-one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain compound BaNa$_2$Cu(VO$_4$)$_2$. This orthovanadate has a centrosymmetric crystal structure, $C2/c$, where the magnetic Cu$^{2+}$ ions form spin chains. These chains are arranged in layers, with the chain direction changing by 62$^0$ between the two successive layers. Alternatively, the spin lattice can be viewed as anisotropic triangular layers upon taking the inter-chain interactions into consideration. Despite this potential structural complexity, temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, ESR intensity, and NMR shift agree well with the uniform spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg chain model with an intrachain coupling of $J/k_{\rm B} \simeq 5.6$ K. The saturation field obtained from the magnetic isotherm measurement consistently reproduces the value of $J/k_{\rm B}$. Further, the $^{51}$V NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate mimics the 1D character in the intermediate temperature range, whereas magnetic long-range order sets in below $T_{\rm N} \simeq 0.25$ K. The effective interchain coupling is estimated to be $J_{\perp}/k_{\rm B} \simeq 0.1$ K. The theoretical estimation of exchange couplings using band-structure calculations reciprocate our experimental findings and unambiguously establish the 1D character of the compound. Finally, the spin lattice of BaNa$_2$Cu(VO$_4$)$_2$ is compared with the chemically similar but not isostructural compound BaAg$_2$Cu(VO$_4)_2$., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, 1 table, Phys. Rev. We report gapless quantum spin liquid behavior in the layered triangular Sr$_{3}$CuSb$_{2}$O$_{9}$ (SCSO) system. X-ray diffraction shows superlattice reflections associated with atomic site ordering into triangular Cu planes well-separated by Sb planes. Muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements show that the $S = \frac{1}{2}$ moments at the magnetically active Cu sites remain dynamic down to 65 mK in spite of a large antiferromagnetic exchange scale evidenced by a large Curie-Weiss temperature $\theta_{\mathrm{cw}} \simeq $ -143 K as extracted from the bulk susceptibility. Specific heat measurements also show no sign of long-range order down to 0.35 K. The magnetic specific heat ($\mathit{C}$$_{\mathrm{m}}$) below 5 K reveals a $\mathit{C}$$_{\mathrm{m}}$ $=$ $\gamma T$ + $\alpha T$$^{2}$ behavior. The significant $T$$^{2}$ contribution to the magnetic specific heat invites a phenomenology in terms of the so-called Dirac spinon excitations with a linear dispersion. From the low-$T$ specific heat data, we estimate the dominant exchange scale to be $\sim $ 36 K using a Dirac spin liquid ansatz which is not far from the values inferred from microscopic density functional theory calculations ($\sim $ 45 K) as well as high-temperature susceptibility analysis ($\sim$ 70 K). The linear specific heat coefficient is about 18 mJ/mol-K$^2$ which is somewhat larger than for typical Fermi liquids., Comment: 16 pages, 21 figures, including supplementary material. The afterglow of a gamma ray burst (GRB) can give us valuable insight into the properties of its host galaxy. To correctly interpret the spectra of the afterglow we need to have a good understanding of the foreground interstellar medium (ISM) in our own Galaxy. The common practice to correct for the foreground is to use neutral hydrogen (HI) data from the Leiden/Argentina/Bonn (LAB) survey. However, the poor spatial resolution of the single dish data may have a significant effect on the derived column densities. To investigate this, we present new high-resolution HI observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) towards 4 GRBs. We combine the interferometric ATCA data with single dish data from the Galactic All Sky Survey (GASS) and derive new Galactic HI column densities towards the GRBs. We use these new foreground column densities to fit the Swift XRT X-ray spectra and calculate new intrinsic hydrogen column density values for the GRB host galaxies. We find that the new ATCA data shows higher Galactic HI column densities compared to the previous single dish data, which results in lower intrinsic column densities for the hosts. We investigate the line of sight optical depth near the GRBs and find that it may not be negligible towards one of the GRBs, which indicates that the intrinsic hydrogen column density of its host galaxy may be even lower. Structural and magnetic properties of a quasi-one-dimensional spin-$1/2$ compound NaVOPO$_4$ are explored by x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization, specific heat, electron spin resonance, and $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance measurements, as well as complementary \textit{ab initio} calculations. Whereas magnetic susceptibility of NaVOPO$_4$ may be compatible with the gapless uniform spin chain model, detailed examination of the crystal structure reveals a weak alternation of the exchange couplings with the alternation ratio $\alpha\simeq 0.98$ and the ensuing zero-field spin gap $\Delta_{0}/k_{\rm B} \simeq 2.4$~K directly probed by field-dependent magnetization measurements. No long-range order is observed down to 50\,mK in zero field. However, applied fields above the critical field $H_{c1}\simeq 1.6$\,T give rise to a magnetic ordering transition with the phase boundary $T_{\rm N} \propto {(H - H_{\rm c1})^{\frac{1}{\phi}}}$, where $\phi \simeq 1.8$ is close to the value expected for Bose-Einstein condensation of triplons. With its weak alternation of the exchange couplings and small spin gap, NaVOPO$_4$ lies close to the quantum critical point., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables

We present the synthesis and a detail investigation of structural and magnetic properties of polycrystalline [VO(HCOO)$_2\cdot$(H$_2$O)] by means of x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization, heat capacity, and electron spin resonance measurements. It crystallizes in a orthorhombic structure with space group $Pcca$. It features distorted VO$_6$ octahedra connected via HCOO linker (formate anions) forming a two-dimensional square lattice network with a bilayered structure. Analysis of magnetic susceptibility, high field magnetization, and heat capacity data in terms of the frustrated square lattice model unambiguously establish quasi-two-dimensional nature of the compound with nearest neighbour interaction $J_1/k_{\rm B} \simeq 11.7$~K and next-nearest-neighbour interaction $J_2/k_{\rm B} \simeq 0.02$~K. It undergoes a N\'eel antiferromagnetic ordering at $T_{\rm N} \simeq 1.1$~K. The ratio $\theta_{\rm CW}/T_{\rm N} \simeq 10.9$ reflects excellent two-dimensionality of the spin-lattice in the compound. A strong in-plane anisotropy is inferred from the linear increase of $T_{\rm N}$ with magnetic field, consistent with the structural data., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

We present the first release of the data and compact-source catalogue for the JCMT Large Program SCUBA-2 Continuum Observations of Pre-protostellar Evolution (SCOPE). SCOPE consists of 850-um continuum observations of 1235 Planck Galactic Cold Clumps (PGCCs) made with the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array 2 on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. These data are at an angular resolution of 14.4 arcsec, significantly improving upon the 353-GHz resolution of Planck at 5 arcmin, and allowing for a catalogue of 3528 compact sources in 558 PGCCs. We find that the detected PGCCs have significant sub-structure, with 61 per cent of detected PGCCs having 3 or more compact sources, with filamentary structure also prevalent within the sample. A detection rate of 45 per cent is found across the survey, which is 95 per cent complete to Planck column densities of $N_{H_{2}}$ $>$ 5 $\times$ 10$^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$. By positionally associating the SCOPE compact sources with YSOs, the star formation efficiency, as measured by the ratio of luminosity to mass, in nearby clouds is found to be similar to that in the more distant Galactic Plane, with the column density distributions also indistinguishable from each other., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, 1 table. We present the synthesis and a detailed investigation of structural and magnetic properties of polycrystalline NaVOAsO$_4$ by means of x-ray diffraction, magnetization, electron spin resonance (ESR), and $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements as well as density-functional band structure calculations. Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, ESR intensity, and NMR line shift could be described well using an alternating spin-$1/2$ chain model with the exchange coupling $J/k_{\rm B}\simeq 52$ K and an alternation parameter $\alpha \simeq 0.65$. From the high-field magnetic isotherm measured at $T=1.5 $ K, the critical field of the gap closing is found to be $ H_{\rm c}\simeq 16$ T, which corresponds to the zero-field spin gap of $\Delta_0/k_{\rm B}\simeq 21.4$ K. Both NMR shift and spin-lattice relaxation rate show an activated behavior at low temperatures, further confirming the singlet ground state. The spin chains do not coincide with the structural chains, whereas the couplings between the spin chains are frustrated. Because of a relatively small spin gap, NaVOAsO$_4$ is a promising compound for further experimental studies under high magnetic fields., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables

The supernova remnant Cassiopeia A (Cas A) is one of the few remnants in which it is possible to observe unshocked ejecta. A deep 1.64 micron image of Cas A shows a patch of diffuse emission from unshocked ejecta, as well as brighter emission from Fast-Moving Knots and Quasi-Stationary Flocculi. Emission at 1.64 micron is usually interpreted as [Fe II] emission, and spectra of the bright knots confirm this by showing the expected emission in other [Fe II] lines. We performed NIR spectroscopy on the diffuse emission region and found that the unshocked ejecta emission does not show those lines, but rather the [Si I] 1.607 micron line. This means that the 1.64 micron line from the unshocked ejecta may be the [Si I] 1.645 line from the same upper level, rather than [Fe II]. We find that the [Si I] line is formed by recombination, and we use the [Si I] to [Si II] ratio to infer a temperature about 100 K, close to the value assumed for analysis of low frequency radio absorption and that inferred from emission by cool dust. Our results constrain estimates of Cas A's total mass of unshocked ejecta that are extremely sensitive to temperature assumptions, but they do not resolve the ambiguity due to clumping., Comment: 16 pages, 1 table, 4 figures

We present the extended source catalogue for the UKIRT Widefield Infrared Survey for H2 (UWISH2). The survey is unbiased along the inner Galactic Plane from l \approx 357deg to l \approx 65deg and |b| < 1.5deg and covers 209 square degrees. A further 42.0 and 35.5 square degrees of high dust column density regions have been targeted in Cygnus and Auriga. We have identified 33200 individual extended H2 features. They have been classified to be associated with about 700 groups of jets and outflows, 284 individual (candidate) Planetary Nebulae, 30 Supernova Remnants and about 1300 Photo-Dissociation Regions. We find a clear decline of star formation activity (traced by H2 emission from jets and photo-dissociation regions) with increasing distance from the Galactic Centre. We present a comprehensive view of the W51B HII region complex and the W51C supernova remnant (SNR) using new radio observations from the VLA, VLBA, MERLIN, JCMT, and CSO along with archival data from Spitzer, ROSAT, ASCA, and Chandra. Our VLA data include the first 400 cm (74 MHz) continuum image of W51 at high resolution (88 arcsec). The 400 cm image shows non-thermal emission surrounding the G49.2-0.3 HII region, and a compact source of non-thermal emission (W51B_NT) coincident with the previously-identified OH (1720 MHz) maser spots, non-thermal 21 and 90 cm emission, and a hard X-ray source. W51B_NT falls within the region of high likelihood for the position of TeV gamma-ray emission. Using the VLBA three OH (1720 MHz) maser spots are detected in the vicinity of W51B_NT with sizes of 60 to 300 AU and Zeeman effect magnetic field strengths of 1.5 to 2.2 mG. The multiwavelength data demonstrate that the northern end of the W51B HII region complex has been partly enveloped by the advancing W51C SNR and this interaction explains the presence of W51B_NT and the OH masers. This interaction also appears in the thermal molecular gas which partially encircles W51B_NT and exhibits narrow pre-shock (DeltaV 5 km/s) and broad post-shock (DeltaV 20 km/s) velocity components. RADEX radiative transfer modeling of these two components yield physical conditions consistent with the passage of a non-dissociative C-type shock. Confirmation of the W51B/W51C interaction provides additional evidence in favor of this region being one of the best candidates for hadronic particle acceleration known thus far., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

A survey of the Milky Way disk and the Magellanic System at the wavelengths of the 21-cm atomic hydrogen (HI) line and three 18-cm lines of the OH molecule will be carried out with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder telescope. The survey will study the distribution of HI emission and absorption with unprecedented angular and velocity resolution, as well as molecular line thermal emission, absorption, and maser lines. The area to be covered includes the Galactic plane (|b|< 10deg) at all declinations south of delta = +40deg, spanning longitudes 167deg through 360deg to 79deg at b=0deg, plus the entire area of the Magellanic Stream and Clouds, a total of 13,020 square degrees. The brightness temperature sensitivity will be very good, typically sigma_T ~ 1 K at resolution 30arcsec and 1 km/s. The survey has a wide spectrum of scientific goals, from studies of galaxy evolution to star formation, with particular contributions to understanding stellar wind kinematics, the thermal phases of the interstellar medium, the interaction between gas in the disk and halo, and the dynamical and thermal states of gas at various positions along the Magellanic Stream., Comment: 45 pages, 8 figures, Pub. We report room temperature ferromagnetism in Ni doped CeO2 nanoparticles using X-ray diffraction (XRD), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and dc magnetization measurements. Nanoparticles of Ce1-xNixO2 (0.0 \leq x \leq 0.10) were prepared by using a co-precipitation method. XRD measurements indicate that all samples exhibit single phase nature with cubic structure and ruled out the presence of any secondary phase. Lattice parameters, strain and particle size calculated from XRD data have been found to decrease with increase in Ni doping. Inter-planner distance measured from HR-TEM images for different Ni doped samples indicate that Ni ions are substituting Ce ions in CeO2 matrix. Magnetization measurements performed at room temperature display weak ferromagnetic behavior of Ce1-xNixO2 (0.0 \leq x \leq 0.10) nanoparticles. Magnetic moment calculated from magnetic hysteresis loop was found to increases with Ni doping up to 7% and then start decreasing with further doping., Comment: 8 pages 4 figures

Aims: We aim at deriving the excitation conditions of the interstellar gas as well as the local FUV intensities in the molecular cloud surrounding NGC 3603 to get a coherent picture of how the gas is energized by the central stars. Methods: The NANTEN2-4m submillimeter antenna is used to map the [CI] 1-0, 2-1 and CO 4-3, 7-6 lines in a 2' x 2' region around the young OB cluster NGC 3603 YC. These data are combined with C18O 2-1 data, HIRES-processed IRAS 60 and 100 micron maps of the FIR continuum, and Spitzer/IRAC maps. Results: The NANTEN2 observations show the presence of two molecular clumps located south-east and south-west of the cluster and confirm the overall structure already found by previous CS and C18O observations. We find a slight position offset of the peak intensity of CO and [CI], and the atomic carbon appears to be further extended compared to the molecular material. We used the HIRES far-infrared dust data to derive a map of the FUV field heating the dust. We constrain the FUV field to values of \chi = 3 - 6 \times 10^3 in units of the Draine field across the clouds. Approximately 0.2 to 0.3 % of the total FUV energy is re-emitted in the [CII] 158 {\mu}m cooling line observed by ISO. Applying LTE and escape probability calculations, we derive temperatures (TMM1 = 43 K, TMM2 = 47 K), column densities (N(MM1) = 0.9 \times 10^22 cm^-2, N(MM2) = 2.5 \times 10^22 cm^-2) and densities (n(MM1) = 3 \times 10^3 cm^-3, n(MM2) = 10^3 -10^4 cm^-3) for the two observed molecular clumps MM1 and MM2. Conclusions: The cluster is strongly interacting with the ambient molecular cloud, governing its structure and physical conditions. A stability analysis shows the existence of gravitationally collapsing gas clumps which should lead to star formation. RX J1713.7-3946 is one of the TeV {\gamma}-ray supernova remnants (SNRs) emitting synchrotron X rays. The SNR is associated with molecular gas located at ~1 kpc. We made new molecular observations toward the dense cloud cores, peaks A, C and D, in the SNR in the 12CO(J=2-1) and 13CO(J=2-1) transitions at angular resolution of 90". The most intense core in 13CO, peak C, was also mapped in the 12CO(J=4-3) transition at angular resolution of 38". Peak C shows strong signs of active star formation including bipolar outflow and a far-infrared protostellar source and has a steep gradient with a r^{-2.2$\pm$0.4} variation in the average density within radius r. Peak C and the other dense cloud cores are rim-brightened in synchrotron X rays, suggesting that the dense cloud cores are embedded within or on the outer boundary of the SNR shell. This confirms the earlier suggestion that the X rays are physically associated with the molecular gas (Fukui et al. 2003). We present a scenario where the densest molecular core, peak C, survived against the blast wave and is now embedded within the SNR. Numerical simulations of the shock-cloud interaction indicate that a dense clump can indeed survive shock erosion, since shock propagation speed is stalled in the dense clump. Additionally, the shock-cloud interaction induces turbulence and magnetic field amplification around the dense clump that may facilitate particle acceleration in the lower-density inter-clump space leading to the enhanced synchrotron X rays around dense cores., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, to accepted in The Astrophysical Journal. We report structural and magnetic properties of pure ZnO rods using X-ray diffraction (XRD), magnetization hysteresis (M-H) loop and near edge x-ray fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS) study at O K edge. Sample of ZnO was prepared by co-precipitation method. XRD and selective area electron diffraction measurements infer that ZnO rods exhibit a single phase polycrystalline nature with wurtzite lattice. Field emission transmission electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy micrographs infers that ZnO have rod type microstructures with dimension 200 nm in diameter and 550 nm in length. M-H loop studies performed at room temperature display room temperature ferromagnetism in ZnO rods. This paper reports the effect of Fe doping on the structure and room temperature ferromagnetism of CeO2 nanoparticles. X-ray diffraction and selective area electron diffraction measurement reflects that Ce1-xFexO2 (x = 0.0 - 0.07) nanoparticles exhibit single phase nature with cubic structure and none of the sample showed the presence of any secondary phase. The mean particle size calculated by using a transmission electron microscopy measurement was found to increase with increase in Fe content. DC magnetization measurements performed at room temperature indicates that all the samples exhibit ferromagnetism. Structural, magnetic and electronic structural properties of Ni0.2Cd0.3Fe2.5-xAlxO4 ferrites nanoparticles have been studied x-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dc magnetization, and near edge x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS) measurements. Nanoparticles of Ni0.2Cd0.3Fe2.5-xAlxO4 (x = 0.0 - 0.4) ferrite were synthesized using sol-gel method. The XRD and TEM measurements show that all samples have single phase nature with cubic structure and have nanocrystalline behavior. From the XRD and TEM analysis, it is observed that particle size increases with Al doping. DC magnetization measurements infer that magnetic moment decreases whereas blocking temperature increases with increase in Al doping. It is observed that the magnetic moment decreases with Al doping which may be due to the dilution of the sublattice by the doping of Al ions. We use new large area far infrared maps ranging from 65 - 500 microns obtained with the AKARI and the Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (BLAST) missions to characterize the dust emission toward the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant (SNR). Using the AKARI high resolution data we find a new "tepid" dust grain population at a temperature of ~35K and with an estimated mass of 0.06 solar masses. This component is confined to the central area of the SNR and may represent newly-formed dust in the unshocked supernova ejecta. While the mass of tepid dust that we measure is insufficient by itself to account for the dust observed at high redshift, it does constitute an additional dust population to contribute to those previously reported. We fit our maps at 65, 90, 140, 250, 350, and 500 microns to obtain maps of the column density and temperature of "cold" dust (near 16 K) distributed throughout the region. The large column density of cold dust associated with clouds seen in molecular emission extends continuously from the surrounding interstellar medium to project on the SNR, where the foreground component of the clouds is also detectable through optical, X-ray, and molecular extinction. At the resolution available here, there is no morphological signature to isolate any cold dust associated only with the SNR from this confusing interstellar emission. Studying molecular gas in the central regions of the star burst galaxies NGC4945 and Circinus enables us to characterize the physical conditions and compare them to previous local and high-z studies. We estimate temperature, molecular density and column densities of CO and atomic carbon. Using model predictions we give a range of estimated CO/C abundance ratios. Using the new NANTEN2 4m sub-millimeter telescope in Pampa La Bola, Chile, we observed for the first time CO 4-3 and [CI] 3P1-3 P0 at the centers of both galaxies at linear scale of 682 pc and 732 pc respectively. We compute the cooling curves of 12CO and 13CO using radiative transfer models and estimate the physical conditions of CO and [CI]. The centers of NGC4945 and Circinus are very [CI] bright objects, exhibiting [CI] 3P1 - 3 P0 luminosities of 91 and 67Kkms-1kpc2, respectively. The [CI] 3P1-3 P0/CO 4-3 ratio of integrated intensities are large at 1.2 in NGC4945 and 2.8 in Circinus. Combining previous CO J= 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 and 13CO J= 1-0, 2-1 studies with our new observations, the radiative transfer calculations give a range of densities, n(H2) = 10^3-3*104^cm-3, and a wide range of kinetic temperatures, Tkin = 20 - 100K, depending on the density. Future CO J= 7-6 and [CI] 2-1 observations will be important to resolve the ambiguity in the physical conditions and confirm the model predictions., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The Carina region is an excellent astrophysical laboratory for studying the feedback mechanisms of newly born, very massive stars within their natal giant molecular clouds (GMCs) at only 2.35 kpc distance. We use a clumpy PDR model to analyse the observed intensities of atomic carbon and CO and to derive the excitation conditions of the gas. The NANTEN2-4m submillimeter telescope was used to map the [CI] 3P1-3P0, 3P2-3P1 and CO 4-3, 7-6 lines in two 4'x4' regions of Carina where molecular material interfaces with radiation from the massive star clusters. One region is the northern molecular cloud near the compact OB cluster Tr14, and the second region is in the molecular cloud south of etaCar and Tr16. These data were combined with 13CO SEST spectra, HIRES/IRAS 60um and 100um maps of the FIR continuum, and maps of 8um IRAC/Spitzer and MSX emission. We used the HIRES far-infrared dust data to create a map of the FUV field heating the gas. The northern region shows an FUV field of a few 1000 in Draine units while the field of the southern region is about a factor 10 weaker. We constructed models consisting of an ensemble of small spherically symmetric PDR clumps within the 38" beam (0.43pc), which follow canonical power-law mass and mass-size distributions. We find that an average local clump density of 2x10**5 cm-3 is needed to reproduce the observed line emission at two selected interface positions. AKARI, the first Japanese satellite dedicated to infrared astronomy, was launched on 2006 February 21, and started observations in May of the same year. AKARI has a 68.5 cm cooled telescope, together with two focal-plane instruments, which survey the sky in six wavelength bands from the mid- to far-infrared. The instruments also have the capability for imaging and spectroscopy in the wavelength range 2 - 180 micron in the pointed observation mode, occasionally inserted into the continuous survey operation. The in-orbit cryogen lifetime is expected to be one and a half years. The All-Sky Survey will cover more than 90 percent of the whole sky with higher spatial resolution and wider wavelength coverage than that of the previous IRAS all-sky survey. Point source catalogues of the All-Sky Survey will be released to the astronomical community. The pointed observations will be used for deep surveys of selected sky areas and systematic observations of important astronomical targets. Far-infrared (IR) images of the nearby Sb galaxy NGC2841 and the Sc galaxy NGC2976 at wavelengths of 65, 90, 140, and 160 um have been obtained with the Far-Infrared Surveyor (FIS) onboard AKARI. Both galaxies reveal similar morphologies of dust rings. They are, however, significantly different in the dust temperature: a cold (21 K) ring for NGC2841 and a warm (30 K) ring for NGC2976, which presumably reflects the difference in the origin of the ring structure for the different Hubble type of the galaxy. In addition to the dust ring structure, a warm dust component is detected from the central region of NGC2841, which may be attributed to the heating by its Low-Ionization Nuclear Emission-line Region nucleus. As for NGC2976, an extended dust component is observed along the minor axis, which shows a distribution somewhat asymmetrical to the galactic disk; this might be associated with the HI bridge in the M81/M82 group that NGC2976 belongs to. By taking advantage of a wealth of the far-IR bands of the FIS, it is demonstrated that the spectral energy distribution of NGC2841 is spatially more variable than that of NGC2976., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ AKARI special issue

Although some 20--30,000 supernova remnants (SNRs) are expected to exist in the Milky Way, only about 230 are presently known. This implies that most SNRs are ``missing''. Recently, we proposed that small ($\simlt 1^\circ$), faint, high-velocity features seen in large-scale 21-cm line surveys of atomic hydrogen ({\sc Hi}) in the Galactic plane could be examples of such {\it missing} old SNRs. Here we report on high-resolution \schi observations of one such candidate, FVW 190.2+1.1, which is revealed to be a rapidly expanding ($\sim 80$ \kms) shell. The parameters of this shell seem only consistent with FVW 190.2+1.1 being the remnant of a SN explosion that occurred in the outermost fringes of the Galaxy some $\sim 3\times 10^5$ yr ago. This shell is not seen in any other wave band suggesting that it represents the oldest type of SNR, that which is essentially invisible except via its \schi line emission. FVW 190.2+1.1 is one of a hundred "forbidden-velocity wings" (FVWs) recently identified in the Galactic plane, and our discovery suggests that many of these are likely to be among the oldest SNRs. The radio pulsar B1951+32 and the supernova remnant CTB 80 provide a rich laboratory for the study of neutron stars and supernova remnants. Here, we present ground-based optical and near-infrared observations of them, along with X-ray observations with Chandra and a re-analysis of archival data obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. The X-ray observations reveal a cometary pulsar wind nebula which appears to be confined by a bow shock produced by high-velocity motion of the pulsar, making PSR B1951+32 a rare pulsar exhibiting both an H alpha bow shock and a shocked X-ray pulsar wind nebula. The distribution of H alpha and radio continuum emission is indicative of a contact discontinuity of the shocked pulsar winds and shocked ambient medium at \~0.05 pc. On the other hand, the optical synchrotron knot of PSR B1951+32 likely has a flat spectrum in the optical and near-infrared wavebands, and our astrometry is consistent with only one of the two reported optical counterpart candidates for the pulsar., Comment: To appear in ApJ Letters
