Based on diblock copolymers, a pair of "schizophrenic" micellar systems is designed by combining a nonionic and thermoresponsive block with a zwitterionic block, which is thermoresponsive and salt-sensitive. The nonionic block is poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) or poly(N-isopropylmethacrylamide) (PNIPMAM) and exhibits a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) behavior in aqueous solution. The zwitterionic block is a polysulfobetaine, i.e., poly(4((3-methacrylamidopropyl)dimethylammonio)butane-1-sulfonate) (PSBP), and has an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) behavior with the clearing point decreasing with increasing salt concentration. The PSBP-b-PNIPAM and PSBP-b-PNIPMAM diblock copolymers are prepared by successive reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerizations. The PSBP block is chosen such that the clearing point of the homopolymer is significantly higher in pure water than the cloud point of PNIPAM or PNIPMAM. Using turbidimetry, H-1 NMR, and small-angle neutron scattering, we investigate the overall phase behavior as well as the structure and interaction between the micelles and the intermediate phase, both in salt-free D2O and in 0.004 M NaBr in D2O in a wide temperature range. We find that PSBP-b-PNIPAM at 50 g L-1 in salt-free D2O is turbid in the entire temperature range. It forms spherical micelles below the cloud point of PNIPAM and cylindrical micelles above. Similar behavior is observed for PSBP-b-PNIPMAM at 50 g L-1 in salt-free D2O with a slight and smooth increase of the light transmission below the cloud point of PNIPMAM and an abrupt decrease above. Upon addition of 0.004 M NaBr, the UCST-type cloud point of the PSBP-block is notably decreased, and an intermediate regime is encountered below the cloud point of PNIPMAM, where the light transmission is slightly enhanced. In this regime, the polymer solution exhibits behavior typical for polyelectrolyte solutions. Thus, double thermosensitive and salt-sensitive behavior with "schizophrenic" micelle formation is found, and the width of the intermediate regime, where both blocks are hydrophilic, can be tuned by the addition of electrolyte.

Subunit vaccines typically show insufficient immunogenicity. To address this issue, we developed a novel self-adjuvanting particulate carrier system based upon the lipids phytantriol (Phy) and mannide monooleate (MaMo). Phy is a lipid known to form nonlamellar phases in fully hydrated systems, whereas MaMo has been found to promote immune responses in emulsion form. A bulk phase composition of Phy/MaMo (14 wt %) showed hexagonal (HII) phase behavior over a practical temperature range (including room and body temperature), and was therefore used for particle development. Hexosomes stabilized with different concentrations of either poloxamer 407, Myrj 59, or Pluronic F108 were successfully prepared. To demonstrate the versatile nature of these systems, the particles were further modified with either positively or negatively charged lipids and loaded with model antigens, while maintaining the HII structure. These hexosomes are structurally robust and amenable to customization, rendering them suitable as antigen delivery carriers.

Core–shell brush copolymers featuring a poly(p-hydroxystyrene) (PHOS) backbone and PPO-b-PEO (PPO and PEO stand for poly(propylene oxide) and poly(ethylene oxide)) side chains with different molecular compositions and exhibiting two inverse molecular architectures in regard to the side chains were investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and temperature-resolved wide- and small-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS/SAXS) were used to characterize the thermal and structural behavior. For the sample with the crystallizable PEO block linked directly to the backbone and a high PEO fraction (84.9 wt %), our results reveal a PEO crystallization/melting behavior similar to the one of bulk PEO. Surprisingly, the crystalline order, as determined by WAXS, persists up to 30 K above the melting point determined by DSC (Tm = 54 °C). The solvent dynamics of concentrated solutions of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM, 25 wt %) in water/methanol mixtures (85:15 v/v) are measured with the aim of shedding light onto the cononsolvency effect. Quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) with contrast variation has been carried out at temperatures below and above the cloud point by using in the first set of experiments the mixture H2O:d-MeOD (d-MeOD denotes fully deuterated methanol) as a solvent and in the second set of experiments the mixture D2O:MeOH (MeOH denotes methanol). As a reference, bulk H2O, bulk MeOH and the mixtures H2O:d-MeOD and D2O:MeOH (both 85:15 v/v) have been investigated as well. In the PNIPAM solution in H2O:d-MeOD, two water populations are identified, namely strongly and less strongly arrested water. At the cloud point, the former is partially released from PNIPAM. The diffusion coefficient of the latter one is similar to the one in the water/methanol mixture, and its residence time decreases at the cloud point. The PNIPAM solution in D2O:MeOH reveals similar dynamics to the one in H2O:d-MeOD which may reflect that the dynamics of MeOH near the PNIPAM chain is similar to the one of H2O. The similarity may, however, partially be due to H/D exchange between D2O and MeOH. In both PNIPAM solutions, the mean-square displacement of the PNIPAM chain decreases gradually above the cloud point.

The aggregation kinetics of thermoresponsive core-shell micelles with a poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) shell in pure water or in mixtures of water with the cosolvents methanol or ethanol at mole fractions of 5% is investigated during a temperature jump across the respective cloud point. Characteristically, these mixtures give rise to cononsolvency behavior. At the cloud point, aggregates are formed, and their growth is followed with time-resolved small-angle neutron scattering. Using the reversible association model, the interaction potential between the aggregates is determined from their growth rate in dependence on the cosolvents. The effect of the cosolvent is attributed to the interaction potential on the structured layer of hydration water around the aggregates. It is surmised that the latter is perturbed by the cosolvent and thus the residual repulsive hydration force between the aggregates is reduced. The larger the molar volume of the cosolvent, the more pronounced is the effect. This framework provides a molecular-level understanding of solvent-mediated effective interactions in polymer solutions and new opportunities for the rational control of self-assembly in complex soft matter systems.

We investigate the influence of ionic strength on the structural properties of stimuli-responsive hydrogels from triblock polyampholytes PAA-b-P2VP-b-PAA (PAA and P2VP are negatively charged poly(acrylic acid) and positively charged poly(2-vinylpyridine)). In our previous studies, we found that the transition behavior depends on the charge asymmetry which is controlled by pH and which alters the degree of ionization of the two types of blocks [Dyakonova Macromolecules 2014, 47, 7561]. The same triblock polyampholyte, but with chemically quaternized P2VP (QP2VP) instead of P2VP as the middle block, is highly positively charged, independently of pH. Core–shell structured nanocomposites of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) adsorbed onto low specific surface area fumed silica nanoparticles were studied employing structure (nitrogen adsorption–desorption, IPSD), morphology (SEM), thermal (DSC) and dielectric (BDS) techniques. The study focuses on the effects of porosity characteristics on polymer structure and dynamics at the filler interface. To that aim, roughness and porosity characteristics of silica were modified, prior to polymer adsorption, with nanozirconia grafting. The initial particles (15–150 nm in diameter) were found to aggregate and disperse well in the volume of nanocomposites, while nanozirconia grafting resulted in increased volume of the voids. PDMS was adsorbed both in the inner space of the voids and onto external surfaces of the aggregates. According to BDS and DSC the fraction of polymer chains at interfaces increases with nanozirconia modification and the respective dynamics (αint relaxation) and cooperativity are enhanced. The results were interpreted in terms of increasing of the number of polymer–particle contact points on the modified surfaces, as compared to the unmodified ones. Finally, the characteristics of interfacial polymer (fraction, dynamics, polarizability) were interpreted employing models which involve bimodal chain conformations and increased order (orientation) of the polymer chains at the interfaces.

The thermoresponsive behavior of two diblock copolymers PS- b-PNIPAM and PS- b-PMDEGA, which both comprise a hydrophobic polystyrene (PS) block but different thermoresponsive blocks, also differing in length, poly( N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and poly(methoxy diethylene glycol acrylate) (PMDEGA), respectively, was comparatively investigated in a wide temperature range. Concentrated aqueous solutions containing 25 wt % polymer were studied by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS). DSC measurements show that, during the demixing phase transition, the hydration number per oligo(ethylene glycol) side chain in the PS- b-PMDEGA solution decreases rather gradually, even up to 20 °C above the onset of the transition, i.e., the cloud point (CP). In contrast, the PS- b-PNIPAM solution exhibits an abrupt, stepwise dehydration behavior at its CP, indicated by the sharp, narrow endothermic peak. BDS measurements suggest that the organization of the expelled water during the phase transition and the subsequent evolution of the micellar aggregates are different for the two copolymers. In the PS- b-PMDEGA solution, the long-range charge transport process changes significantly at its CP and strong interfacial polarization processes appear, probably due to charge accumulation at the interfaces between the micellar aggregates and the aqueous medium. On the contrary, in the PS- b-PNIPAM solution, the phase transition has only a marginal effect on the long-range conduction process and is accompanied by a reduction in the high-frequency (1 MHz) dielectric permittivity, e'. The latter effect is attributed to the reduced polarization strength of local chain modes due to an enhancement of intra- and interchain hydrogen bonds (HBs) in the polymer-rich phase during the water detaching process. Surprisingly, our BDS measurements indicate that prior to both the demixing and remixing processes the local chain mobility increases temporally. Our dielectric studies suggest that for PS- b-PNIPAM the water detaching process initiates a few degrees below CP and that the local chain mobility and intra- and/or interchain HBs of the PNIPAM blocks may control its thermoresponsive behavior. Dielectric "jump" experiments show that the kinetics of micellar aggregation in the PS- b-PMDEGA solution is slower than that in the PS- b-PNIPAM solution and is independent of the target temperature within the two-phase region. From the experimental point of view, it is shown that the dielectric susceptibility, especially, the dielectric permittivity, e', is a well-suited probe for monitoring both the reversible changes in the molecular dipolar bond polarizability and the long-range interfacial polarization at the phase transition.

Octa-OH-functional POSS has been incorporated into a model polyurethane elastomer as a comparatively massive and notionally “robust” 3-dimensional cross-linking core. The effects of this cross-linking moiety on the morphology and molecular dynamics of the system are studied over a range of size and time scales. Microscopy, scattering, spectroscopic, thermal, and dielectric techniques, in agreement with each other, show that the covalent inclusion of the cross-linking particles restricts microphase separation, inhibits the formation of hard-block domains, and decelerates the motional dynamics of the polyurethane backbone. The effects on both the morphology and the dynamics of the polyurethane system are not continuous but occur in a steplike manner in the loading region of 4–6 wt % POSS. Liquid-crystalline compounds with a perfluorinated aromatic ring as the mesogenic core and a propylene carbonate unit were prepared and mixed with lithium bis(trifluoro-methanesulfonyl)-imide (LiTFSI). The self-assembly was driven by the interaction of the polar propylene carbonate unit. Thus it is one of the few examples of liquid crystals with only one phenyl group that is able to self-assemble. Small- and Wide angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) measurements indicate that the molecules spontaneously formed a smectic phase. Calculation of the Li-salt dissociation from the data obtained by a combination of impedance spectroscopy measurements and diffusion experiments by 7Li and 19F pulsed field gradient (PFG) NMR revealed good dissociation properties of the compounds. The complex of (2-Oxo-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl)methyl 4-(decyloxy)-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzoate (4b) with LiTFSI exhibited anisotropic conductivity. The conductivity parallel to the smectic orientation was 125 times higher than perpendicular and is one of the best reported for liquid crystals with propylene carbonate fragments.

We investigate the conformational properties of stimuli-responsive hydrogels from triblock polyelectrolytes PtBA-b-P2VP-b-PtBA (PtBA and P2VP are poly(tert-butyl acrylate) and poly(2-vinylpyridine)) and the corresponding polyampholytes PAA-b-P2VP-b-PAA (PAA is poly(acrylic acid)), the latter with nonquaternized or quaternized P2VP blocks. The block lengths are the same in all three polymers with relatively short end blocks and long middle blocks. The mechanical properties of the hydrogels have previously been found to depend strongly on the pH value and on the nature of the blocks (Polymer 2008, 49, 1249). Here, we present results from rheological studies and small-angle neutron scattering revealing the underlying hydrogel structures. The hydrogel structure of the polyampholyte depends on the charge asymmetry, controlled by the pH value, and reveals several transitions with increasing charge ratio. We investigate the cononsolvency effect of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) in mixtures of water and methanol. Two systems are studied: micellar solutions of polystyrene-b-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PS-b-PNIPAM) diblock copolymers and, as a reference, solutions of PNIPAM homopolymers, both at a concentration of 20 mg/mL in DO. Using a stopped-flow instrument, fully deuterated methanol was rapidly added to these solutions at volume fractions between 10 and 20%. Time-resolved turbidimetry revealed aggregate formation within 10-100 s. The structural changes on mesoscopic length scales were followed by time-resolved small-angle neutron scattering (TR-SANS) with a time resolution of 0.1 s. In both systems, the pathway of the aggregation depends on the content of deuterated methanol; however, it is fundamentally different for homopolymer and diblock copolymer solutions: In the former, very large aggregates (>150 nm) are formed within the dead time of the setup, gradient appears at their surface in the late stages. In contrast, the growth of the aggregates in the latter system features different regimes, and the final aggregate size is 50 nm, thus much smaller than for the homopolymer. For the diblock copolymer, the time dependence of the aggregate radius can be described by two models: In the initial stage, the diffusion-limited coalescence model describes the data well; however, the resulting coalescence time is unreasonably high. The nanostructures of thin films spin-coated from binary blends of compositionally symmetric polystyrene-b-polybutadiene (PS-b-PB) diblock copolymer having different molar masses are investigated by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) after spin-coating and after subsequent solvent vapor annealing (SVA). In thin films of the pure diblock copolymers having high or low molar mass, the lamellae are perpendicular or parallel to the substrate, respectively. The as-prepared binary blend thin films feature mainly perpendicular lamellae in a one-phase state, indicating that the higher molar mass diblock copolymer dominates the lamellar orientation. The lamellar thickness decreases linearly with increasing volume fraction of the low molar mass diblock copolymer. After SVA, well-defined macrophase-separated nanostructures appear, which feature parallel lamellae near the film surface and perpendicular ones in the bulk.

The reorientation of lamellae and the dependence of the lamellar spacing, Dlam, on polymer volume fraction, ϕP, Dlam ∝ ϕP–β, in diblock copolymer thin films during solvent vapor annealing (SVA) are examined by combining white light interferometry (WLI) and grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS). A thin film of lamellae-forming poly(styrene-b-butadiene) prepared by spin-coating features lamellae of different orientations with the lamellar spacing depending on orientation. During annealing with ethyl acetate (EAC) vapor, it is found that perpendicular lamellae behave differently from parallel ones, which is due to the fact that their initial lamellar thicknesses differ strongly. Quantitatively, the swelling process is composed of three regimes and the drying process of two regimes. The first two regimes of swelling are associated with a significant structural rearrangement of the lamellae; i.e., the lamellae first become thicker, and then perpendicular and randomly oriented lamellae vanish, which results in a purely parallel orientation at the end of the swelling process. The rearrangement is attributed to the increase of mobility of the polymer chains imparted by the solvent and to a decrease of total free energy of the thin film. In the third regime of swelling, the scaling exponent is found to be β = −0.32. During drying, the deswelling is nonaffine which may be a consequence of the increase of nonfavorable segmental interactions as the solvent is removed.

We have investigated the collapse transition of aqueous solutions of gradient copolymers from poly(iso-propyl-2oxazoline)s (PiPrOx), which contain few hydrophobic moieties (n-nonyl-2-oxazoline (NOx) monomers). We extend our previous investigations (Salzinger et al., Colloid Polym Sci 290:385–400, 2012), where, for the gradient copolymers, an intermediate regime right above the cloud point was identified where small aggregatesare predominant.Largeaggregatesare present in significant numbers only at higher temperatures. To investigate the stability of the intermediate regime, we performed time-resolved small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments during temperature jumps starting below the cloud point and ending in the intermediate regime or in the high-temperature regime. We found that the intermediate regime is stable during the time investigated (∼1 h). Moreover, the collapse of the small aggregates and the surface structure of the large aggregates are related to the number of hydrophobic moieties and the quench depth. The present results elucidate the structural evolution of these polymers and relate them to their final state as well as to their macroscopic behavior.

Thermoresponsive block copolymers comprising long, hydrophilic, nonionic poly(methoxy diethylene glycol acrylate) (PMDEGA) blocks and short hydrophobic polystyrene (PS) blocks are investigated in aqueous solution. Various architectures, namely diblock, triblock, and starblock copolymers are studied as well as a PMDEGA homopolymer as reference, over a wide concentration range. For specific characterization methods, polymers were labeled, either by partial deuteration (for neutron scattering studies) or by fluorophores. Using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, critical micellization concentrations are identified and the hydrodynamic radii of the micelles, r , are determined. Using dynamic light scattering, the behavior of r in dependence on temperature and the cloud points are measured. Small-angle neutron scattering enabled the detailed structural investigation of the micelles and their aggregates below and above the cloud point. Viscosity measurements are carried out to determine the activation energies in dependence on the molecular architecture. Differential scanning calorimetry at high polymer concentration reveals the glass transition of the polymers, the fraction of uncrystallized water and effects of the phase transition at the cloud point. Dielectric relaxation spectroscopy shows that the polarization changes reversibly at the cloud point, which reflects the formation of large aggregates upon heating through the cloud point and their redissolution upon cooling.

Poly(methyl methacrylate)/silica (PMMA/SiOx) nanocomposites were synthesized via sol–gel method and studied by various techniques. The dispersion of the silica particles (10–100 nm) in the matrix was probed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), while solid-state NMR and Raman spectroscopy detected the formation of an inorganic network with high degree of crosslinking. To elucidate the impact of the filler on the molecular dynamics of the PMMA, different methods were used; namely differential scanning calorimetry, thermally stimulated depolarization current and broadband dielectric relaxation spectroscopy. All three methods observed a significant impact of the nanoparticles on the segmental dynamics of the matrix, which was expressed as an increase of the glass transition temperature (Tg) in terms of calorimetry and as a shift of the α (segmental) relaxation to lower frequencies in terms of dielectric spectroscopy. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. For aqueous poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) solutions, a structural instability leads to the collapse and aggregation of the macromolecules at the temperature-induced demixing transition. The accompanying cooperative dehydration of the PNIPAM chains is known to play a crucial role in this phase separation. We elucidate the impact of partial dehydration of PNIPAM on the volume changes related to the phase separation of dilute to concentrated PNIPAM solutions. Quasi-elastic neutron scattering enables us to directly follow the isotropic jump diffusion behavior of the hydration water and the almost freely diffusing water. As the hydration number decreases from 8 to 2 for the demixing 25 mass % PNIPAM solution, only a partial dehydration of the PNIPAM chains occurs. Dilatation studies reveal that the transition-induced volume changes depend in a remarkable manner on the PNIPAM concentration of the solutions. The excess volume per mole of H2O molecules expelled from the solvation layers of PNIPAM during phase separation probably strongly increases from dilute to concentrated PNIPAM solutions. This finding is qualitatively related to the immense strain-softening previously observed for demixing PNIPAM solutions.
