Search

Modern galaxy evolution theories predict a large fraction of ordinary matter to be distributed in the form of gas over the largest galactic scales, with most of the gas mass encompassing the peak and high tail of the overall temperature distribution1. Satellite galaxies however, may lose a large amount of this extended gas due to stripping and ram pressure generated by their in-fall onto a larger system2. The presence of highly ionized gas associated with the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds has been recently confirmed through indirect probes3,4. Using eROSITA/SRG data, in this work we show the first direct images of the X-ray emission from the hottest gas associated to the circum-galactic medium surrounding the Magellanic Clouds. We discover an extended hot gas phase at ~2.3×106 K. This temperature challenges the theoretical expectations from a virialized system5,6 implying that heating mechanisms are at play in the Magellanic Clouds circum-galactic medium. We also discover a strong perturbation that we identify as a cold front in the (Galactic) South direction of the Magellanic Clouds, morphologically connected to them both. The cold front -the first ever discovered at galactic scales (~10 kpc)- also appears to be coincident with enhanced polarization at radio frequencies, as well as with a tangential alignment of the magnetic field lines. The detected discontinuity in the properties of the gas surrounding the Magellanic Clouds is consistent with a gas reservoir being perturbed by the three-body interaction between the Magellanic Clouds and the Milky Way7,8. The Magellanic Clouds provide a unique laboratory for assessing the presence of a hot gas phase in in-falling satellite systems9. The detection of a still large reservoir of hot gas, together with the detection of a front connected with thermal heating and magnetic amplification corroborates and inform galaxy evolution theories10.

We present a detailed analysis of the velocity structure of the Virgo cluster using {\it XMM-Newton} observations. Using a novel technique which uses uses the Cu K$\alpha$ instrumental line to calibrate the EPIC-pn energy scale, we are able to obtain velocity measurements with uncertainties down to $\Delta v \sim 100$ km/s. We created 2D projected maps for the velocity, temperature, metallicity, density, pressure and entropy with an spatial resolution of 0.25$'$. We have found that in the innermost gas there is a high velocity structure, most likely indicating the presence of an outflow from the AGN while our analysis of the cluster cool core using RGS data indicates that the velocity of the gas agrees with the M87 optical redshift. An overall gradient in the velocity is seen, with larger values as we move away from the cluster core. The hot gas located within the western radio flow is redshifted, moving with a velocity $\sim 331$ km/s while the hot gas located within the eastern radio flow is blueshifted, with a velocity $\sim 258$ km/s, suggesting the presence of backflows. Novae are caused by runaway thermonuclear burning in the hydrogen-rich envelopes of accreting white dwarfs, which results in the envelope to expand rapidly and to eject most of its mass. For more than 30 years, nova theory has predicted the existence of a "fireball" phase following directly the runaway fusion, which should be observable as a short, bright, and soft X-ray flash before the nova becomes visible in the optical. Here we present the unequivocal detection of an extremely bright and very soft X-ray flash of the classical Galactic nova YZ Reticuli 11 hours prior to its 9 mag optical brightening. No X-ray source was detected 4 hours before and after the event, constraining the duration of the flash to shorter than 8 hours. In agreement with theoretical predictions, the source's spectral shape is consistent with a black body of $3.27^{+0.11}_{-0.33}\times 10^5$ K ($28.2^{+0.9}_{-2.8}$ eV), or a white dwarf atmosphere, radiating at the Eddington luminosity, with a photosphere that is only slightly larger than a typical white dwarf. This detection of the expanding white dwarf photosphere before the ejection of the envelope provides the last link of the predicted photospheric lightcurve evolution and opens a new window to measure the total nova energetics., Comment: Published in Nature on 11 May 2022

The Vela supernova remnant complex is a region containing at least three supernova remnants: Vela, Puppis A, and Vela Jr. With the launch of the spectro-imaging X-ray telescope eROSITA on board the Spectrum Roentgen Gamma (SRG) mission, it became possible to observe the one degree wide Vela Jr in its entirety. Although several previous pointed Chandra and XMM-Newton observations are available, it is only the second time after the ROSAT all-sky survey that the whole remnant was observed in X-rays with homogeneous sensitivity. Vela Jr is one of the few remnants emitting in the TeV band, making it an important object in shock acceleration studies. However, the age and distance determination using X-ray emission is largely hampered by the presence of the Vela SNR along the same line. With the eROSITA data set our aim is to characterize the emission of Vela Jr and distinguish it from Vela emission, and also to characterize the spectral emission of the inner remnant. We processed the eROSITA data dividing the whole remnant into seven different regions. In addition, images of the whole remnant were employed to pinpoint the position of the geometric center and constrain the proper motion of the CCO. We also employed archival XMM-Newton pointed observations of the NW rim to determine the cutoff energy of the electrons and the expansion velocity. We find the magnetic field can vary between 2 $\mu$G and 16 $\mu$G in the NW rim. We also find that the remnant spectrum is uniformly featureless in most regions, except for two inner regions where an extra thermal model component improves the fit. We obtain new coordinates for the geometric remnant center, resulting in a separation of only 35.2 $\pm$ 15.8" from the position of the CCO. Context. The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) hosts many known high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs), and all but one (SMC X-1) have a Be companion star. Through the calibration and verification phase of eROSITA on board the Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) spacecraft, the Be/X-ray binary XMMU J010429.4-723136 was in the field of view during observations of the supernova remnant, 1E0102.2-7219, used as a calibration standard. Aims. We report timing and spectral analyses of XMMU J010429.4-723136 based on three eROSITA observations of the field, two of which were performed on 2019 November 7-9, with the third on 2020 June 18-19. We also reanalyse the OGLE-IV light curve for that source in order to determine the orbital period. Methods. We performed a Lomb-Scargle periodogram analysis to search for pulsations (from the X-ray data) and for the orbital period (from the OGLE data). X-ray spectral parameters and fluxes were retrieved from the best-fit model. Results. We detect, for the first time, the pulsations of XMMU J010429.4-723136 at a period of ~164 s, and therefore designate the source as SXP 164. From the spectral fitting, we derive a source flux of ~1x10e-12 erg s-1 cm-2 for all three observations, corresponding to a luminosity of ~4x10e35 erg s-1 at the distance of the SMC. Furthermore, reanalysing the OGLE light curve, including the latest observations, we find a significant periodic signal that we believe is likely be the orbital period; at 22.3d, this is shorter than the previously reported values. SN 1987A is the closest observed supernova in the last four centuries and provides a unique opportunity to witness the birth and evolution of a supernova remnant. The source has been monitored by XMM Newton EPIC-pn from 2007--2020. SRG/eROSITA also observed the source during its commissioning phase and the first light in Sept. and Oct. 2019. We investigated the spectral and flux evolution of SN 1987A in X-rays over the last fourteen years up to Nov. 2020 using XMM-Newton and eROSITA observations. We performed a detailed spectral analysis using a three-component plane-parallel shock model and analysed and modelled the EPIC-pn monitoring and eROSITA observations in a consistent manner. This paper reports a complete and most up to date flux evolution of SN 1987A in the soft (0.5-2 keV) and hard (3-10 keV) X-ray band. The flux in the soft band flattened around 9424 d and then displayed a turnover between 10142-10493 d after which it showed a continued decline. Around the same time, a break in the hard-band flux time evolution slope was detected. This implies that the blast wave has now passed beyond the dense structures of the equatorial ring and is expanding further into more tenuous circumstellar medium. The temporal evolution of the normalizations of the three shock components match well the results of hydrodynamical simulations predicting a blue supergiant progenitor scenario. The trend at recent epochs indicate that the emission caused by the forward shock after leaving the equatorial ring and by the reverse shock in the ejecta is becoming more dominant now. The Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma satellite with the extended roentgen survey with an imaging telescope array (eROSITA) x-ray telescope as scientific payload was successfully launched on July 13, 2019 and deployed in a 6-month halo orbit around the second Lagrange point of the Sun–Earth system. The telescope comprises an array of seven mirror systems with seven focal plane cameras. The spectroscopic CCD cameras are a further development of the very successful EPIC-PN camera on the XMM-Newton satellite, which is still operating after more than 20 years in space. The key component of the camera is the detector, which matches the large field of view of 1 deg to permit an all-sky survey in the energy range from 0.2 to 8 keV with state-of-the-art energy resolution. The image area of the PN-junction charge coupled device comprises 384 × 384 pixels. The pixel size of 75 × 75 μm2 each matches the angular resolution of the mirror system. Readout of the full frame is achieved in 9.18 ms but for thermal and onboard event preprocessing reasons, the time resolution is slowed down to 50 ms. The photon entrance window of five of the seven CCDs is equipped with an optical blocking filter, which proved to be advantageous. The improved concept and design of the eROSITA cameras will be explained as well as their operation and performance in space.

eROSITA (extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array) is the primary instrument on the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) mission, which was successfully launched on July 13, 2019, from the Baikonour cosmodrome. After the commissioning of the instrument and a subsequent calibration and performance verification phase, eROSITA started a survey of the entire sky on December 13, 2019. By the end of 2023, eight complete scans of the celestial sphere will have been performed, each lasting six months. At the end of this program, the eROSITA all-sky survey in the soft X-ray band (0.2--2.3\,keV) will be about 25 times more sensitive than the ROSAT All-Sky Survey, while in the hard band (2.3--8\,keV) it will provide the first ever true imaging survey of the sky. The eROSITA design driving science is the detection of large samples of galaxy clusters up to redshifts $z>1$ in order to study the large-scale structure of the universe and test cosmological models including Dark Energy. In addition, eROSITA is expected to yield a sample of a few million AGNs, including obscured objects, revolutionizing our view of the evolution of supermassive black holes. The survey will also provide new insights into a wide range of astrophysical phenomena, including X-ray binaries, active stars, and diffuse emission within the Galaxy. Results from early observations, some of which are presented here, confirm that the performance of the instrument is able to fulfil its scientific promise. In the first months after the launch in July 2019, eROSITA onboard Spektr-RG (SRG) performed long-exposure observations in the regions around SN 1987A and SNR N132D in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We analyse the distribution and the spectrum of the diffuse X-ray emission in the observed fields to determine the physical properties of the hot phase of the interstellar medium (ISM). The eROSITA data are complemented by newly derived column density maps for the Milky Way and the LMC, 888 MHz radio continuum map from the Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), and optical images of the Magellanic Cloud Emission Line Survey (MCELS). We detect significant emission from thermal plasma with kT=0.2 keV in all the regions. There is also an additional higher-temperature emission component from a plasma with kT = 0.7 keV. In addition, non-thermal X-ray emission is significantly detected in the superbubble 30 Dor C. The absorbing column density NH in the LMC derived from the analysis of the X-ray spectra taken with eROSITA is consistent with the NH obtained from the emission of the cold medium over the entire area. Neon abundance is enhanced in the regions in and around 30 Dor and SN 1987A, indicating that the ISM has been chemically enriched by the young stellar population. Emission from the stellar cluster RMC 136 and the Wolf-Rayet stars RMC 139 and RMC 140 is best modelled with a high-temperature (kT>1 keV) non-equilibrium ionisation plasma emission and a non-thermal component with a photon index of {\Gamma} =1.3. (abridged version) We present a detailed spectroscopic and timing analysis of X-ray observations of the bright radio-to-gamma-ray emitting pulsar PSR B0656+14, which were obtained simultaneously with eROSITA and XMM-Newton during the Calibration and Performance Verification phase of the Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma mission (SRG) for 100 ks. Using XMM-Newton and NICER we firstly established an X-ray ephemeris for the time interval 2015 to 2020, which connects all X-ray observations in this period without cycle count alias and phase shifts. The mean eROSITA spectrum clearly reveals an absorption feature originating from the star at 570 eV with a Gaussian sigma of about 70 eV, tentatively identified earlier in a long XMM-Newton observation (Arumugasamy et al. 2018). A second absorption feature, described here as an absorption edge, occurs at 260-265 eV. It could be of atmospheric or of instrumental origin. These absorption features are superposed on various emission components, phenomenologically described as the sum of hot (120 eV) and cold (65 eV) blackbody components, both of photospheric origin, and a power-law with photon index Gamma=2. The phase-resolved spectroscopy reveals that the Gaussian absorption line at 570 eV is clearly present throughout ~60% of the spin cycle. The visibility of the line strength coincides in phase with the maximum flux of the hot blackbody. We also present three families of model atmospheres: a magnetised atmosphere, a condensed surface, and a mixed model, which were applied to the mean observed spectrum and whose continuum fit the observed data well. The atmosphere model, however, predicts too short distances. T. H. Reiprich et al., arXiv:2012.08491v1, [Context]: Inferences about dark matter, dark energy, and the missing baryons all depend on the accuracy of our model of large-scale structure evolution. In particular, with cosmological simulations in our model of the Universe, we trace the growth of structure, and visualize the build-up of bigger structures from smaller ones and of gaseous filaments connecting galaxy clusters., [Aims]: Here we aim to reveal the complexity of the large-scale structure assembly process in great detail and on scales from tens of kiloparsecs up to more than 10 Mpc with new sensitive large-scale observations from the latest generation of instruments. We also aim to compare our findings with expectations from our cosmological model., [Methods]: We used dedicated SRG/eROSITA performance verification (PV) X-ray, ASKAP/EMU Early Science radio, and DECam optical observations of a ~15 deg2 region around the nearby interacting galaxy cluster system A3391/95 to study the warm-hot gas in cluster outskirts and filaments, the surrounding large-scale structure and its formation process, the morphological complexity in the inner parts of the clusters, and the (re-)acceleration of plasma. We also used complementary Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect data from the Planck survey and custom-made Galactic total (neutral plus molecular) hydrogen column density maps based on the HI4PI and IRAS surveys. We relate the observations to expectations from cosmological hydrodynamic simulations from the Magneticum suite., [Results]: We trace the irregular morphology of warm and hot gas of the main clusters from their centers out to well beyond their characteristic radii, r200. Between the two main cluster systems, we observe an emission bridge on large scale and with good spatial resolution. This bridge includes a known galaxy group but this can only partially explain the emission. Most gas in the bridge appears hot, but thanks to eROSITA’s unique soft response and large field of view, we discover some tantalizing hints for warm, truly primordial filamentary gas connecting the clusters. Several matter clumps physically surrounding the system are detected. For the “Northern Clump,” we provide evidence that it is falling towards A3391 from the X-ray hot gas morphology and radio lobe structure of its central AGN. Moreover, the shapes of these X-ray and radio structures appear to be formed by gas well beyond the virial radius, r100, of A3391, thereby providing an indirect way of probing the gas in this elusive environment. Many of the extended sources in the field detected by eROSITA are also known clusters or new clusters in the background, including a known SZ cluster at redshift z = 1. We find roughly an order of magnitude more cluster candidates than the SPT and ACT surveys together in the same area. We discover an emission filament north of the virial radius of A3391 connecting to the Northern Clump. Furthermore, the absorption-corrected eROSITA surface brightness map shows that this emission filament extends south of A3395 and beyond an extended X-ray-emitting object (the “Little Southern Clump”) towards another galaxy cluster, all at the same redshift. The total projected length of this continuous warm-hot emission filament is 15 Mpc, running almost 4 degrees across the entire eROSITA PV observation field. The Northern and Southern Filament are each detected at >4σ. The Planck SZ map additionally appears to support the presence of both new filaments. Furthermore, the DECam galaxy density map shows galaxy overdensities in the same regions. Overall, the new datasets provide impressive confirmation of the theoretically expected structure formation processes on the individual system level, including the surrounding warm-hot intergalactic medium distribution; the similarities of features found in a similar system in the Magneticum simulation are striking. Supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXTs) are a peculiar class of supergiant high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) systems characterised by extreme variability in the X-ray domain. In current models, this is mainly attributed to the clumpy nature of the stellar wind coupled with gating mechanisms involving the spin and magnetic field of the neutron star. We studied the X-ray properties of the supergiant HMXB XMMU J053108.3-690923 in the Large Magellanic Cloud to understand its nature. We performed a detailed temporal and spectral analysis of the eROSITA and XMM-Newton data of XMMU J053108.3-690923. We confirm the putative pulsations previously reported for the source with high confidence, certifying its nature as a neutron star in orbit with a supergiant companion. We identify the extremely variable nature of the source in the form of flares seen in the eROSITA light curves. The source flux exhibits a total dynamic range of more than three orders of magnitude, which confirms its nature as an SFXT, and is the first such direct evidence from a HMXB outside our Galaxy exhibiting a very high dynamic range in luminosity as well as a fast flaring behaviour. We detect changes in the hardness ratio during the flaring intervals where the hardness ratio reaches its minimum during the peak of the flare and increases steeply shortly afterwards. This is also supported by the results of the spectral analysis carried out at the peak and off-flare intervals. This scenario is consistent with the presence of dense structures in the supergiant wind of XMMU J053108.3-690923 where the clumpy medium becomes photoionised at the peak of the flare leading to a drop in the photo-electric absorption. The power of eROSITA (extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array), the core instrument on the Russian–German Spectrum–Roentgen–Gamma (SRG) mission, is high sensitivity at high spectral, spatial, and temporal resolution over a large field of view. This is achieved by combining 7 coaligned X–ray telescope modules, each composed of 54 paraboloid / hyperboloid mirror shells in a Wolter–I geometry, to focus the X–rays through optical blocking filters onto PNCCDs with a total of 1 million pixels, providing a spectral resolution of 60 – 160 eV FWHM over an energy range 0.2 – 8 keV and a 1 degree field of view at a time resolution of 50 ms. In order to make full scientific use of the unique capabilities of eROSITA, all the individual components have to be calibrated. The initial ground calibration was done at the PANTER and PUMA facilities of MPE as well as at BESSY, and was supplemented by an in–orbit calibration. We report on the extensive and often challenging calibration activities performed on ground and in space.

eROSITA aboard the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma satellite, successfully launched in July 2019, is the first X-ray astronomical telescope operational at the Sun-Earth Lagrange point L2. A prime scientific goal of eROSITA is the detection of 100000 clusters of galaxies, which at the fainter luminosity end appears as weak and slightly extended objects. For a reliable detection and characterization of the sources also a detailed knowledge of the instrumental background is required. In the light of the upcoming ESA Athena mission and other future X-ray missions, eROSITA can play a role as pathfinder in terms of space environment and non-X-ray background at L2.. Initial results related to the eROSITA in-flight background have been obtained during Commissioning and subsequent Calibration and Performance Verification phases. The eROSITA background is composed of various components, such as from the electronics, from particle induced radiation inside the camera, external particles registered (and rejected) onboard, stray-light from celestial sources, and general X-ray background. By means of dedicated variations of the set-up (e.g., filter wheel, on-board processing) and viewing direction we started to disentangle the components and origins. Particle background variations appear to be low, which may be expected due to the low solar activity at the moment. The general background level appears to exceed pre-launch expectation. This is currently under investigation.

By observing the fluorescence X-rays generated when solar-coronal X-rays and charged particles interact with the surface regolith, MIXS will be able to measure the atomic composition of the upper ∼10-20 μm of Mercury’s surface on the day-side. Through precipitating particles on the night-side, MIXS will also determine the dynamic interaction of the planet’s surface with the surrounding space environment. MIXS is composed of two complementary elements: MIXS-C is a collimated instrument which will achieve global coverage at a similar spatial resolution to that achieved (in the northern hemisphere only – i.e. ∼ 50 – 100 km) by MESSENGER; MIXS-T is the first ever X-ray telescope to be sent to another planet and will, during periods of high solar activity (or intense precipitation of charged particles), reveal the X-ray flux from Mercury at better than 10 km resolution. During its performance verification phase, the soft X-ray instrument eROSITA aboard the Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma(SRG) spacecraft observed large regions in the Magellanic Clouds, where almost 40 known high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs, including candidates) are located. We looked for new HMXBs in the eROSITA data, searched for pulsations in HMXB candidates and investigated the long-term behaviour of the full sample using archival X-ray and optical data. For sources sufficiently bright, a detailed spectral and temporal analysis of their eROSITA data was performed. A source detection analysis of the eROSITA images in different energy bands provided count rates and upper limits for the remaining sources. We report the discovery of a new Be/X-ray binary in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The transient SRGEt J052829.5-690345 was detected with a 0.2-8.0 keV luminosity of ~10^35 erg/s and exhibits a hard X-ray spectrum, typical for this class of HMXBs. The OGLE I-band light curve of the V~15.7 mag counterpart shows large variations by up to 0.75 mag, which occur quasi periodically with ~511 days. The eROSITA observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud covered 16 Be/X-ray binary pulsars, five of them were bright enough to accurately determine their current pulse period. The pulse periods for SXP 726 and SXP 1323 measured from eROSITA data are ~800 s and ~1006 s, respectively, far away from their discovery periods. Including archival XMM-Newton observations we update the spin-period history of the two long-period pulsars which show nearly linear trends in their period evolution since more than 15 years. The corresponding average spin-down rate for SXP 726 is 4.3 s/yr while SXP 1323 shows spin-up with a rate of -23.2 s/yr. Aims. We present the results of the analysis of five observations of the globular clutser 47 Tucanae (47 Tuc) with the extended Roentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array (eROSITA) on board the Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma (Spektr-RG, SRG). We study the X-ray population in the field of one of the most massive globular clusters in our Milky Way. We focused on the classification of point-like sources in the field of 47 Tuc. The unresolved dense core of 47 Tuc (1.7 radius) and also sources that show extended emission are excluded from this study. Methods. We applied different methods of X-ray spectral and timing analysis together with multi-wavelength studies to classify the X-rays sources in the field of 47 Tuc. Results. We detected 888 point-like sources in the energy range of 0.2–5.0 keV. We identified 126 background active galactic nuclei and 25 foreground stars. One of the foreground stars is classified as a variable M dwarf. We also classified 14 X-ray sources as members of 47 Tuc, including one symbiotic star, two quiescent low-mass X-ray binaries, and four cataclysmic variables. There are also five X-ray sources that can either be a cataclysmic variable or a contact binary, and also one X-ray source can be an active binary (type RS CVn). We identified one X-ray binary that belongs to the Small Magellanic Cloud. Moreover, we calculated the X-ray luminosity function of 47 Tuc. No significant population that seems to belong to the globular cluster is observed in the energy range of 0.5–2.0 keV using eROSITA observations.

eROSITA (extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array) is the main instrument onboard the Russian/German "Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma" (SRG) mission which will be operated in an L2 orbit. It will perform the first imaging all-sky survey in the medium energy band. The main scientific goals are a) to detect the hot intergalactic medium of ~100 thousand galaxy clusters and groups and hot gas in filaments between clusters to map out the large scale structure in the Universe for the study of cosmic structure evolution, b) to detect systematically all obscured accreting Black Holes in nearby galaxies and many (up to 3 Million) new, distant active galactic nuclei, and c) to study in detail the physics of galactic X-ray source populations, like pre-main sequence stars, supernova remnants and X-ray binaries. The eROSITA flight model was assembled in 2016 and has successfully passed all acceptance tests on instrument level in the facilities of MPE and IABG in Germany. eROSITA was shipped to NPOL (SRG prime contractor) in January 2017. Currently (May 2018) eROSITA has been integrated on the SRG spacecraft and has successfully passed all functional tests. eROSITA is now awaiting its launch from the Baikonur cosmodrome in spring 2019. The launcher will be a PROTON with an upper stage BLOK-DM.

eROSITA (extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array) is the primary instrument on-board the Russian/German "Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma" (SRG) mission. It will perform the first all-sky imaging X-ray survey in the medium X-ray energy band. eROSITA is currently awaiting its launch from Baikonur in early 2019 into an L2 halo orbit. Preparations for eROSITA ground operations have been under way in parallel with the hardware development of the eROSITA telescope, comprising the areas mission planning, telescope operation and data reception, the operation of a data processing pipeline, and the creation of tools for data access and interactive data analysis. eROSITA mission: After a brief calibration and performance verification phase eROSITA will perform a four-year all-sky survey fully covering the sky eight times, which will be followed by several years of dedicated observations of interesting objects. Two ground antennas in Russia (near Moscow and in Siberia) will be available to provide several hours of daily ground contact for commanding and for data reception. eROSITA data rights will be equally divided between the Russian and German partners. Operation and data centers will exist at Max-Planck-Institut fur extraterrestrische Physics (MPE) in Garching, Germany and at the Russian Space Research Institute (IKI) in Moscow. Interfaces and procedures for mission planning, telescope operation and data exchange are closely coordinated between both sites. Mission planning and operation: Based on orbit simulations provided by the Russian side, a software environment for optimizing the desired sky coverage and observing efficiency while fulfilling visibility and solar constraints was set up. Agreed upon observing timelines will be converted to eROSITA and SRG command sequences fed to the Russian ground station for up-linking. MPE personnel will be on site either in Moscow or at MPE in Garching during each ground contact to conduct ondemand commanding and to assess instrument health and data quality. Data analysis pipeline and interactive data analysis: The eROSITA data processing pipeline consists of modules for data ingestion, event calibration, exposure calculation, source detection, and the creation of high-level source specific data products. It will be operated at MPE on a daily basis after each ground contact. A subset of the software tasks comprising the data analysis pipeline also functions as interactive data analysis tools. These can be grouped into tasks for X-ray event calibration, selection and binning, exposure, background and sensitivity map creation and for source detection. Data products are provided in a standards compliant FITS format for use with well-known high-level X-ray data analysis tools. A Web based graphical source catalog and data products viewer will allow easy data browsing. Since mid-2014 the interactive eROSITA data analysis package is available to the eROSITA user community, permitting the analysis of simulated eROSITA datasets, created by a sophisticated X-ray modeling and simulation tool.

We present results from the Chandra X-ray Observatory’s characterization of the X-ray emission from Comet 103P/Hartley 2, in support of NASA’s Deep Impact Extended close flyby of the comet on 04 November 2010. The comet was observed 4 times for a total on target time of ∼60 ks between the 17th of October and 16th of November 2010, with two of the visits occurring during the EPOXI close approach on 04 November and 05 November 2010. X-ray emission from 103P was qualitatively similar to that observed for collisionally thin Comets 2P/Encke (Lisse, C.M. et al. [2005]. Astrophys. J. 635, 1329–1347) and 9P/Tempel 1 (Lisse, C.M. et al. [2007]. Icarus 190, 391–405). Emission morphology offset sunward but asymmetrical from the nucleus and emission lines produced by charge exchange between highly stripped C, N, and O solar wind minor ions and coma neutral gas species were found. The comet was very under-luminous in the X-ray at all times, representing the 3rd faintest comet ever detected (LX = 1.1 ± 0.3 × 1014 erg s−1). The coma was collisionally thin to the solar wind at all times, allowing solar wind ions to flow into the inner coma and interact with the densest neutral coma gas. Localization of the X-ray emission in the regions of the major rotating gas jets was observed, consistent with the major source of cometary neutral gas species being icy coma dust particles. Variable spectral features due to changing solar wind flux densities and charge states were also seen. Modeling of the Chandra observations from the first three visits using observed gas production rates and ACE solar wind ion fluxes with a charge exchange mechanism for the emission is consistent with the temporal and spectral behavior expected for a slow, hot wind typical of low latitude emission from the solar corona interacting with the comet’s neutral coma. The X-ray emission during the 4th visit on 16 November 2010 is similar to the unusual behavior seen for Comet 17P/Holmes in 2007 (Christian, D.J. et al. [2010]. Astrophys. J. Suppl. 187, 447–459) as the solar wind became dominated by a less ionized and faster plasma, more typical of outflow from polar coronal hole regions. We postulate that the overall faintness of the comet seen during all visits is due to the unusually well mixed dust and gas content of this hyperactive comet’s coma producing Auger electrons rather than X-rays via charge exchange with the solar wind. An alternative possible explanation for the faintness of the comet’s X-ray emission, and its unusual high CV and unusually low CVI emission, is that the impinging solar wind was drastically slowed in the inner coma, below 150 km s−1, before charge exchanging with cometary neutrals.

Since the initial discovery of cometary charge exchange emission, more than 20 comets have been observed with a variety of X-ray and UV observatories. This observational sample offers a broad variety of comets, solar wind environments and observational conditions. It clearly demonstrates that solar wind charge exchange emission provides a wealth of diagnostics, which are visible as spatial, temporal, and spectral emission features. It was thus expectedthat this comet would exhibit considerably different X-rayproperties, and in fact this was observed: 17P/Holmes be-came the first comet where Chandra did not detect any sig-nificant X-ray emission at all (Christian et al. 2010). Themost likely explanation for this dramatic X-ray faintness isthat the polar wind was so diluted and its ionization so lowthat only very little X-ray flux was generated by charge ex-change at energies above∼300eV. The pn-CCD cameras at the focal plane of the eROSITA space observatory will be the first X-ray (0.2–12 keV) detector to operate in a L-2 orbit. Therefore, no direct information of instrumental non X-ray background (NXB) is available to make predictions for eROSITA. Since, in general, the instrumental NXB experienced in orbit has a major impact on the overall sensitivity of the cameras, we investigated and modeled the L-2 radiation environment and its interaction with the eROSITA mass distribution and cameras, in order to quantify the expected pn-CCD NXB level. We obtain an average value of NXB ∼25% lower than that observed by the pn-CCDs on-board the XMM-Newton satellite, which is placed in a Highly Elliptical Orbit (HEO). We discuss this result in light of the differences between the L-2 and HEO space environments.

Charge transfer, or charge exchange, describes a process in which an ion takes one or more electrons from another atom. Investigations of this fundamental process have accompanied atomic physics from its very beginning, and have been extended to astrophysical scenarios already many decades ago. Yet one important aspect of this process, i.e. its high efficiency in generating X-rays, was only revealed in 1996, when comets were discovered as a new class of X-ray sources. This finding has opened up an entirely new field of X-ray studies, with great impact due to the richness of the underlying atomic physics, as the X-rays are not generated by hot electrons, but by ions picking up electrons from cold gas. While comets still represent the best astrophysical laboratory for investigating the physics of charge transfer, various studies have already spotted a variety of other astrophysical locations, within and beyond our solar system, where X-rays may be generated by this process. They range from planetary atmospheres, the heliosphere, the interstellar medium and stars to galaxies and clusters of galaxies, where charge transfer may even be observationally linked to dark matter. This review attempts to put the various aspects of the study of charge transfer reactions into a broader historical context, with special emphasis on X-ray astrophysics, where the discovery of cometary X-ray emission may have stimulated a novel look at our universe.

We present results for Chandra observations of comets, 17P/Holmes (17P) and 8P/Tuttle (8P). 17P was observed for 30 ksec right after its major outburst, on 31 Oct 2007 (10:07 UT) and comet 8P/Tuttle was observed in 2008 January for 47 ksec. During the two Chandra observations, 17P was producing at least 100 times more water than 8P but was 2.2 times further away from the Sun. Also, 17P is the first comet observed at high latitude (+19.1 degrees) during solar minimum, while 8P was observed at a lower solar latitude (3.4 degrees). The X-ray spectrum of 17P is unusually soft with little significant emission at energies above 500 eV. Depending on our choice of background, we derive a 300 to 1000 eV flux of 0.5 to 4.5 x 10^-13 ergs/cm2/sec, with over 90% of the emission in the 300 to 400 eV range. This corresponds to an X-ray luminosity between 0.4 to 3.3 x 10^15 ergs/sec. 17P's lack of X-rays in the 400 to 1000 eV range, in a simple picture, may be attributed to the polar solar wind, which is depleted in highly charged ions. 8P/Tuttle was much brighter, with an average count rate of 0.20 counts/s in the 300 to 1000 eV range. We derive an average X-ray flux in this range of 9.4 x 10^-13 ergs/cm2/sec and an X-ray luminosity for the comet of 1.7 x 10^14 ergs/sec. The light curve showed a dramatic decrease in flux of over 60% between observations on January 1st and 4th. When comparing outer regions of the coma to inner regions, its spectra showed a decrease in ratios of CVI/CV, OVIII/OVII, as predicted by recent solar wind charge exchange emission models. There are remarkable differences between the X-ray emission from these two comets, further demonstrating the qualities of cometary X-ray observations, and solar wind charge exchange emission in more general as a means of remote diagnostics of the interaction of astrophysical plasmas., 37 Pages, 8 Tables, 11 Figures; Accepted in Astrophysical Journal Supplements

We present our results on the Chandra X-ray Observatory Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) observations of the bright Oort Cloud comets C/2012 S1 (ISON) and C/2011 L4 (PanSTARRS). ISON was observed between 2013 October 31-November 06 during variable speed solar wind (SW), and PanSTARRS was observed between 2013 April 17-23 during fast SW. ISON produced an extended parabolic X-ray morphology consistent with a collisionally thick coma, while PanSTARRS demonstrated only a diffuse X-ray-emitting region. We consider these emissions to be from charge exchange (CX) and model each comet's emission spectrum from first principles accordingly. Our model agrees with the observational spectra and also generates composition ratios for heavy, highly charged SW ions interacting with the cometary atmosphere. We compare our derived SW ion compositions to observational data and find a strong agreement between them. These results further demonstrate the utility of CX emissions as a remote diagnostics tool of both astrophysical plasma interaction and SW composition. In addition, we observe potential soft X-ray emissions via ACIS around 0.2 keV from both comets that are correlated in intensity to the hard X-ray emissions between 0.4-1.0 keV. We fit our CX model to these emissions, but our lack of a unique solution at low energies makes it impossible to conclude if they are cometary CX in origin. We lastly discuss probable emission mechanism sources for the soft X-rays and explore new opportunities these findings present in understanding cometary emission processes via Chandra., Accepted to ApJ, 10 pages, 7 figures

X-rays from Mars were first detected in July 2001 with the satellite Chandra. The main source of this radiation was fluorescent scattering of solar X-rays in its upper atmosphere. In addition, the presence of an extended X-ray halo was indicated, probably resulting from charge exchange interactions between highly charged heavy ions in the solar wind and neutrals in the Martian exosphere. The statistical significance of the X-ray halo, however, was very low. In November 2003, Mars was observed again in X-rays, this time with the satellite XMM-Newton. This observation, characterized by a considerably higher sensitivity, confirmed the presence of the X-ray halo and proved that charge exchange is indeed the origin of the emission. This was the first definite detection of charge exchange induced X-ray emission from the exosphere of another planet. Previously, this kind of emission had been detected from comets (which are largely exospheres) and from the terrestrial exosphere. Because charge exchange interactions between atmospheric constituents and solar wind ions are considered as an important nonthermal escape mechanism, probably responsible for a significant loss of the Martian atmosphere, X-ray observations may lead to a better understanding of the present state of the Martian atmosphere and its evolution. X-ray images of the Martian exosphere in specific emission lines exhibited a highly anisotropic morphology, varying with individual ions and ionization states. With its capability to trace the X-ray emission out to at least 8 Mars radii, XMM-Newton can explore exospheric regions far beyond those that have been observationally explored to date. Thus, X-ray observations provide a novel method for studying processes in the Martian exosphere on a global scale.

Magnetic field dependent transient solar observations are suggestive for axion-photon oscillations with light axion(-like) particle involvement. Novel dark-moon measurements with the SMART X-ray detectors can be conclusive for radiatively decaying massive exotica like the generic solar Kaluza-Klein axions. Furthermore, the predicted intrinsic strong solar magnetic fields could be the reason of enhanced low energy axion production. Such an axion component could be the as yet unknown origin of the strong quiet Sun X-ray luminosity at energies below 1 keV. Solar axion telescopes should lower their threshold, aiming to copy processes that might occur near the solar surface, be it due to spontaneous or magnetically induced radiative decay of axion(-like) particles. In the first observation of Mars with XMM-Newton, on 20-21 November 2003, this planet is clearly detected as an X-ray source. High resolution X-ray spectroscopy with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) confirms that the X-ray radiation from Mars is composed of two different components: one due to fluorescent scattering of solar X-rays in its upper atmosphere and the other one due to solar wind charge exchange in its exosphere. Close to Mars, the RGS spectrum is dominated by two pronounced CO 2 fluorescence lines at 23.5 A and 23.7 A. Fluorescence from N 2 at 31.5 A is also observed. With increasing distance from Mars, these lines fade, while numerous (∼12) emission lines become prominent at the positions expected for de-excitation of highly ionized C, N, O, and Ne atoms, strongly resembling a cometary X-ray spectrum. The He-like O 6+ multiplet is resolved and is dominated by the spin-forbidden magnetic dipole transition 2 3 S 1 → 1 1 S 0 , confirming charge exchange as the origin of the emission, while the resonance line 2 1 P 1 → 1 1 S 0 increases in intensity closer to Mars, where the density of the exosphere is higher. The high spectral dispersion and throughput of XMM-Newton/RGS make it possible to produce X-ray images of the Martian exosphere in individual emission lines, free from fluorescent radiation. They show extended emission out to ∼8 Mars radii, with morphological differences between individual ions and ionization states. This is the first definite detection of charge exchange induced X-ray emission from the exosphere of another planet, providing a direct link to cometary X-ray emission.

We report the results of 15 hr of Chandra observations of comet 2P/Encke 2003 on November 24. X-ray emission from comet Encke was resolved on scales of 500-40,000 km, with unusual morphology due to the presence of a low-density, collisionally thin (to charge exchange) coma. A light curve with peak-to-peak amplitude of 20% consistent with a nucleus rotational period of 11.1 hr was found, further evidence for a collisionally thin coma. We confirm emission lines due to oxygen and neon in the 800-1000 eV range but find very unusual oxygen and carbon line ratios in the 200-700 eV range, evidence for low-density, high effective temperature solar wind composition. We compare the X-ray spectral observation results to contemporaneous measurements of the coma and solar wind made by other means and find good evidence for the dominance of a postshock bubble of expanding solar wind plasma, moving at 600 km/s with charge state composition between that of the "fast" and "slow" solar winds.

The volume intensity of the cometary X-ray emission is enhanced behind the bow shock by a factor of up to three. This effect offers the opportunity to identify the bow shock by a tomographic method in X-ray images of comets. By an analysis of the X-ray data obtained by XMM-Newton from Comet C/2000 WM1 (LINEAR) we obtain information on the position, the shape and the structure of the bow shock of this comet. In particular, we get for the first time a global image of the subsolar part of the bow shock, which up to now has not been visited by spacecrafts. The shock is not a sharp discontinuous jump but rather a gradual transition in a region of about 40 000 km width. An asymmetry can well be explained by the inclination of the interplanetary magnetic field. Our results are consistent with theoretical expectations as well as with results from spacecraft observations.

Some 25% of the mass of the universe consists of dark (that is, nonluminous) matter. The nature of this dark matter remains unknown. In their Perspective, Zioutas et al . discuss attempts to detect neutralinos and axions, the two leading particle candidates for dark matter, in astrophysical studies. They show that astrophysical and cosmological observations, some of which have been overlooked in the past, can shed light on particle physics problems that are beyond the reach of accelerator experiments.

X-ray emission from comets is generated by charge exchange of heavy solar wind ions in a high ionization state with the neutral particles of the cometary coma. We use model calculations and theoretical considerations to study the morphology of the emission. The emission is located in a bowl-shaped region on the subsolar side of the nucleus. We derive several length scales. By comparison with hydrodynamic scales we find that the maximum emission comes from inside the bow shock. The size of the emission region depends on the size of the cometary coma, i.e., mainly on the gas production, while the intensity depends mainly on the energy content of the heavy ions in the solar wind flow. This dependence allows a determination of the gas production of the comet and the heavy ion energy flux from a statistical study of the observed spatial distribution of X-ray photons. Here we apply this procedure to X-ray observations from comets C/1996 B2 (Hyakutake), C/1990 K1 (Levy), 2P/Encke and C/2000 WM1 (LINEAR). The gas production rates determined by our method agree very well with those obtained by other methods. The variability of the emission documented in several recorded outbursts correlates with the solar wind proton density.

We present results from our precision radial velocity (RV) program at ESO La Silla. The achievable RV precision after the upgrade of the CES spectrograph is demonstrated. We apply the method of pooled variance diagrams to compare our short-term with our long-term precision. For the active planet-hosting star ι Hor we determine the influence of stellar activity and the rotation period, and address the question of a second long-period planet. For the RV signal in ∊ Eri we demonstrate the distinctness of the time scales present in the RV and Call data, providing further support for the planetary interpretation in this active star.

XMM-Newton—a cornerstone mission of the European Space Agency's Horizon 2000 programme—was launched on December 10, 1999 into orbit. Since March 2000 more than 2000 scientific observations were made. An example will be shown. The X-ray pnCCD camera on EPIC is operating since then without severe problems. We will report about the system performance as a function of time, with special emphasis on the effect of radiation damage in orbit. Up to now the spectroscopic and imaging performance of the pnCCD camera system is stable with time, even at the lowest energies most sensitive to degradation. The deviations of the detector response compared to the prelaunch performance over the 3.5 years is below 0.5%. One year after launch, the pnCCD X-ray camera was hit by a micrometeoroid, damaging 35 pixels spread over the entire field of view. Details of the impact of the pnCCD with a cosmic dust particle will be given. X-ray fluorescence photons, stimulated by charged particles, constitute a significant part of the instrument background. Possible improvements for future missions will be discussed.

N 51D (= DEM L 192) appears at first glance as a nearly circular, 120 pc diameter bubble of ionized gas around the LMC OB association LH 54. A deeper look reveals a complex web of filaments and deviations from radial expansion. Using a deep XMM-Newton pointing centered on N 51D we find that diffuse soft X-ray emitting gas fills the whole superbubble as delineated by the Hα filaments. Contrary to recent findings for galactic winds, the correlation between Hα and X-ray surface brightness is not good. The X-ray spectrum of this diffuse gas cannot be fitted with the LMC abundance pattern, but implies an overabundance of at least oxygen and neon, consistent with recent enrichment from supernovae Type II. Some indications for enhanced mixing at the brightest region of the Hα shell and for a beginning outflow of the hot gas were also detected.

eROSITA (extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array) is the core instrument on the Russian/German Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) mission which is now officially scheduled for launch on March 26, 2016. eROSITA will perform a deep survey of the entire X-ray sky. In the soft band (0.5-2 keV), it will be about 30 times more sensitive than ROSAT, while in the hard band (2-8 keV) it will provide the first ever true imaging survey of the sky. The design driving science is the detection of large samples of galaxy clusters to redshifts z < 1 in order to study the large scale structure in the universe and test cosmological models including Dark Energy. In addition, eROSITA is expected to yield a sample of a few million AGN, including obscured objects, revolutionizing our view of the evolution of supermassive black holes. The survey will also provide new insights into a wide range of astrophysical phenomena, including X-ray binaries, active stars and diffuse emission within the Galaxy. eROSITA is currently (June 2014) in its flight model and calibration phase. All seven flight mirror modules (+ 1 spare) have been delivered and measured in X-rays. The first camera including the complete electronics has been extensively tested (vacuum + X-rays). A pre-test of the final end-toend test has been performed already. So far, all subsystems and components are well within their expected performances.

Using soft x-ray observations of the bright new comet C/1999 S4 (LINEAR) with the Chandra x-ray observatory, we have detected x-ray line emission created by charge exchange between highly ionized solar wind minor ions and neutral gases in the comet's coma. The emission morphology was symmetrically crescent shaped and extended out to 300,000 kilometers from the nucleus. The emission spectrum contains 6 lines at 320, 400, 490, 560, 600, and 670 electron volts, attributable to electron capture and radiative deexcitation by the solar wind species C +5 , C +6 , N +7 , O +7 , and O +8 . A contemporaneous 7-day soft x-ray light curve obtained using the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer demonstrates a large increase in the comet's emission coincident with a strong solar flare on 14 and 15 July 2000.

The European Photon Imaging Camera (EPIC) consortium has provided the focal plane instruments for the three X-ray mirror systems on XMM-Newton. Two cameras with a reflecting grating spectrometer in the optical path are equipped with MOS type CCDs as focal plane detectors (Turner 2001), the telescope with the full photon flux operates the novel pn-CCD as an imaging X-ray spectrometer. The pn-CCD camera system was developed under the leadership of the Max-Planck-Institut fur extraterrestrische Physik (MPE), Garching. The concept of the pn-CCD is described as well as the dierent operational modes of the camera system. The electrical, mechanical and thermal design of the focal plane and camera is briefly treated. The in-orbit performance is described in terms of energy resolution, quantum eciency, time resolution, long term stability and charged particle background. Special emphasis is given to the radiation hardening of the devices and the measured and expected degradation due to radiation damage of ionizing particles in the rst 9 months of in orbit operation.

We present the first results on the hard X-ray continuum image (up to 15 keV) of the supernova remnant Cas A measured with the EPIC cameras onboard XMM-Newton. The data indicate that the hard X-ray tail, observed previously, that extends to energies above 100 keV does not originate in localised regions, like the bright X-ray knots and filaments or the primary blast wave, but is spread over the whole remnant with a rather flat hardness ratio of the 8-10 and 10-15 keV energy bands. This result does not support an interpretation of the hard X-radiation as synchrotron emission produced in the primary shock, in which case a limb brightened shell of hard X-ray emission close to the primary shock front is expected. In fact a weak rim of emission near the primary shock front is discernable in the hardest X-ray image but it contains only a few percent of the hard X-ray emissivity. The equivalent width of the Fe-K line blend varies by more than an order of magnitude over the remnant, it is hard to explain this as Fe-emission from the reverse shock heated ejecta given the ejecta temperature and the age of the remnant. The uniquely high wavelength-dispersive RGS-spectrometer has allowed, for the first time, to extract monochromatic images in several highly ionised element species with high spectral resolution. We present here a preliminary result on the measurement of the O VIII Ly-alpha and Ly-beta brightness distribution and brightness ratios. The large observed decrease of the Ly-alpha/Ly-beta ratio going from the N to the SE can be explained by small-scale (10 arcsec) variations in the N_H column over the remnant and the potential presence of resonance scattering of the O VIII Ly-alpha photons in the limb brightened shell., 5 pages, 6 figures. accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics, letters (XMM issue)

A 6×6 cm 2 large X-ray CCD has been developed and fabricated at the Semiconductor Laboratory of the Max-Planck-Institut fur Extraterrestrische Physik. The CCD has been designed for the focal plane cameras of two satellite missions. The concept is a fully depleted pn-CCD which is sensitive over the whole wafer thickness of about 300 μm. It has been especially developed for X-ray detection delivering a high quantum efficiency over the energy range between 0.2 and 15 keV. A production yield of 27% was achieved. Seven good (almost) defect-free wafers were produced within the performance requirements, i.e. for temperatures below 180 K they show a homogeneous noise level smaller than 5 e − , a uniform spectral response with an energy resolution of 130 eV for Mn-K α and a reduction of the sensitive area due to defects by less than 0.3%. Three CCDs have now been integrated in the flight cameras. The presentation comprises special aspects related with the fabrication of very large CCDs, a summary of the performance parameters and results of the qualification procedure of the European and German Space Agencies.

In an effort to understand the newly discovered phenomenon of cometary X-ray emission, we have obtained observations of the short period (3.3 years), well-studied comet 2P/Encke (Encke) during its July 1997 close approach to Earth. Extended, variable emission on the sunward side of the nucleus was found in the Rontgen X-ray satellite High Resolution Imager (HRI) at 0.090–0.75 keV and in the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) scanner telescopes' Lexan B 0.090- to 0.28-keV and Al/Ti/C 0.050- to 0.16-keV bandpasses; useful upper limits were found in the Ti/Sb/Al 0.020- to 0.040-eV bandpass. Similar to our results for C/Hyakutake, the emission morphology was roughly symmetric with respect to a vector from the comet's nucleus toward the Sun, with a light curve consisting of a slowly varying baseline emission and a large impulsive event on 7 July 1997 with a time scale of ∼3 h and an amplitude of ∼3 times the baseline. A count rate of ∼0.17 counts s−1 in the HRI was measured for the slowly varying emission, corresponding to a total luminosity Lx of 4×1014 erg s−1. Unlike Hyakutake, however, the bulk of the emission clearly originates outside the comet's bowshock, arguing against the magnetic reconnection and plasma dust emission models. The comet's lightcurve does not correlate with the solar X-ray lightcurve, ruling out scattering of solar X-rays as the emission mechanism. The multiwavelength HRI/EUVE photometry is inconsistent with the Haberli et al. (1997, Science 276, 939–942) charge transfer, plasma dust, and attogram dust models of cometary X-ray emission and is consistent with the Wegmann et al. (1988, Planet. Space Sci. 46, 603–612) charge exchange, 0.15- to 0.45-keV thermal bremsstrahlung, and photon index 1.6–2.0 power law models. While the impulsive event correlates very well with the passage of a solar magnetic field boundary at the Earth and an increase in the solar wind particle flux, it is not coincident, according to current models of the solar wind magnetic current sheet, with the passage of the sector boundary by the comet, suggesting that new models of the current sheet are necessary.
