We report on the development of scintillating bolometers based on lithium molybdate crystals containing molybdenum depleted in the double-$\beta$ active isotope $^{100}$Mo (Li$_2$$^{100\textrm{depl}}$MoO$_4$). We used two Li$_2$$^{100\textrm{depl}}$MoO$_4$ cubic samples, 45 mm side and 0.28 kg each, produced following purification and crystallization protocols developed for double-$\beta$ search experiments with $^{100}$Mo-enriched Li$_2$MoO$_4$ crystals. Bolometric Ge detectors were utilized to register scintillation photons emitted by the Li$_2$$^{100\textrm{depl}}$MoO$_4$ crystal scintillators. The measurements were performed in the CROSS cryogenic set-up at the Canfranc underground laboratory (Spain). We observed that the Li$_2$$^{100\textrm{depl}}$MoO$_4$ scintillating bolometers are characterized by excellent spectrometric performance ($\sim$3--6 keV FWHM at 0.24--2.6 MeV $\gamma$'s), moderate scintillation signal ($\sim$0.3--0.6 keV/MeV depending on light collection conditions) and high radiopurity ($^{228}$Th and $^{226}$Ra activities are below a few $\mu$Bq/kg), comparable to the best reported results of low-temperature detectors based on Li$_2$MoO$_4$ with natural or $^{100}$Mo-enriched molybdenum content. Prospects of Li$_2$$^{100\textrm{depl}}$MoO$_4$ bolometers for use in rare-event search experiments are briefly discussed., Comment: Prepared for submission to MDPI Sensors; 16 pages, 7 figures, and 3 tables

The CROSS experiment is proposing to use a new technology of surface sensitive bolometers for low-background neutrinoless double beta decay searches. Efficient rejection of surface α and β events will allow to reach background in the region of interest below than 10−4 cnts/keV/kg/yr. The isotopes of interest, which are 130Te and 100Mo, are investigated with TeO2 and Li2MoO4 bolometers. The surface sensitivity is achieved thanks to the evaporation of thin metallic film on the crystal surface that modifies the pulse shape of near-surface events. An investigation of various pulse shape parameters was performed. The analysis shows that one of the best parameters for discrimination is the integrated area of the raw signal both for TeO2 and Li2MoO4 with Pd-Al (10 nm - 100 nm) bi-layer.

Profiting of the favourable conditions offered by the Gran Sasso underground laboratory and of the several low-background DAMA set-ups, many and competitive results have been obtained for rare processes. Here the main results will be briefly resumed and some more details about the latest activities will be given. In particular, the searches on ββdecays of 106Cd and 116Cd and the perspectives of a complementary investigation on those Dark Matter (DM) candidates inducing just nuclear recoils, by exploiting the directionality approach with the anisotropic ZnWO4 scintillators, will be underlined.

The Majorana Collaboration is using an array of high-purity Ge detectors to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in 76Ge. Searches for neutrinoless double-beta decay are understood to be the only viable experimental method for testing the Majorana nature of the neutrino. Observation of this decay would imply violation of lepton number, that neutrinos are Majorana in nature, and provide information on the neutrino mass. The Majorana Demonstrator comprises 44.1 kg of p-type point-contact Ge detectors (29.7 kg enriched in 76Ge) surrounded by a low-background shield system. The experiment achieved a high efficiency of converting raw Ge material to detectors and an unprecedented detector energy resolution of 2.5 keV FWHM at Qββ. The Majorana collaboration began taking physics data in 2016. This paper summarizes key construction aspects of the Demonstrator and shows preliminary results from initial data.

Cadmium tungstate crystal scintillators enriched in 116Cd to 82% (116CdWO4, total mass of ≈1.2kg) are used to search for 2β decay of 116Cd deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the INFN (Italy). The radioactive contamination of the116CdWO4 crystals has been studied carefully to reconstruct the background of the detector. The measured half-life of 116Cd relatively to 2ν2β decay is T1/22ν2β = [2.8 ± 0.05(stat.) ± 0.4(syst.)] × 1019 yr, in agreement with the results of previous experiments. The obtained limit on the 0ν2β decay of 116Cd (considering the data of the last 8696 h run with an advanced background 0.12(2) counts/yr/kg/keV in the energy interval 2.7−2.9 MeV) is T1/2 ≥ 1.0 × 1023 yr at 90% C.L. The sensitivity of the experiment to the 0ν2β process is lim T1/2 = 3 × 1023 yr at 90% C.L. over 5 years of the measurements and it can be advanced (by further reduction of the background by a factor 3−30) to the level of lim T1/2 = (0.5-1.5) × 1024 yr for the same period of the data taking.

- Abstract
The Majorana Collaboration is operating an array of high-purity Ge detectors to search for the neutrinoless double-β decay of Ge76. The Majorana Demonstrator consists of 44.1 kg of Ge detectors (29.7 kg enriched to 88% in Ge76) split between two modules constructed from ultraclean materials. Both modules are contained in a low-background shield at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota. We present updated results on the search for neutrinoless double-β decay in Ge76 with 26.0±0.5 kg yr of enriched exposure. With the Demonstrator's energy resolution of 2.53 keV FWHM at Qββ, which is the best among all neutrinoless double-β decay experiments, we observe one event in the region of interest with 0.65 events expected from the estimated background, resulting in a lower limit on the Ge76 neutrinoless double-β decay half-life of 2.7×1025 yr [90% confidence level (CL)] with a median sensitivity of 4.8×1025 yr (90% CL). Depending on the matrix elements used, a 90% CL upper limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass in the range of 200-433 meV is obtained. The measured background in the configurations with full shielding and optimized grounding is 11.9±2.0 counts/(FWHM t yr).

- Abstract
The Majorana Demonstrator is an ultra-low-background experiment searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay in Ge76. The heavily shielded array of germanium detectors, placed nearly a mile underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, also allows searches for new exotic physics. We present the first limits for trinucleon decay-specific modes and invisible decay modes for Ge isotopes. We find a half-life limit of 4.9×1025 yr for the decay Ge76(ppn)→Zn73 e+π+ and 4.7×1025 yr for the decay Ge76(ppp)→Cu73 e+π+π+. The half-life limit for the invisible triproton decay mode of Ge76 was found to be 7.5×1024 yr.

- Abstract
The Majorana Demonstrator is searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay (0νββ) in Ge76 using arrays of point-contact germanium detectors operating at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Background results in the 0νββ region of interest from data taken during construction, commissioning, and the start of full operations have been recently published. A pulse shape analysis cut applied to achieve this result, named AvsE, is described in this paper. This cut is developed to remove events whose waveforms are typical of multisite energy deposits while retaining (90±3.5)% of single-site events. This pulse shape discrimination is based on the relationship between the maximum current and energy, and tuned using Th228 calibration source data. The efficiency uncertainty accounts for variation across detectors, energy, and time, as well as for the position distribution difference between calibration and 0νββ events, established using simulations.

International audience; Using data from the NEMO-3 experiment, we have measured the two-neutrino double beta decay ( $2\nu \beta \beta $ ) half-life of$^{82}$ Se as $T_{\smash {1/2}}^{2\nu } \!=\! \left[ 9.39 \pm 0.17\left( \text{ stat }\right) \pm 0.58\left( \text{ syst }\right) \right] \times 10^{19}$ y under the single-state dominance hypothesis for this nuclear transition. The corresponding nuclear matrix element is $\left| M^{2\nu }\right| = 0.0498 \pm 0.0016$ . In addition, a search for neutrinoless double beta decay ( $0\nu \beta \beta $ ) using 0.93 kg of$^{82}$ Se observed for a total of 5.25 y has been conducted and no evidence for a signal has been found. The resulting half-life limit of $T_{1/2}^{0\nu } > 2.5 \times 10^{23} \,\text{ y } \,(90\%\,\text{ C.L. })$ for the light neutrino exchange mechanism leads to a constraint on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of $\langle m_{\nu } \rangle < \left( 1.2{-}3.0\right) \,\text{ eV }$ , where the range reflects $0\nu \beta \beta $ nuclear matrix element values from different calculations. Furthermore, constraints on lepton number violating parameters for other $0\nu \beta \beta $ mechanisms, such as right-handed currents, majoron emission and R-parity violating supersymmetry modes have been set.

- Abstract
The Majorana Collaboration is operating an array of high purity Ge detectors to search for neutrinoless double-β decay in Ge76. The Majorana Demonstrator comprises 44.1 kg of Ge detectors (29.7 kg enriched in Ge76) split between two modules contained in a low background shield at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota. Here we present results from data taken during construction, commissioning, and the start of full operations. We achieve unprecedented energy resolution of 2.5 keV FWHM at Qββ and a very low background with no observed candidate events in 9.95 kg yr of enriched Ge exposure, resulting in a lower limit on the half-life of 1.9×1025 yr (90% C.L.). This result constrains the effective Majorana neutrino mass to below 240-520 meV, depending on the matrix elements used. In our experimental configuration with the lowest background, the background is 4.0-2.5+3.1 counts/(FWHM t yr).

International audience; The double-beta decay of Cd116 has been investigated with the help of radiopure enriched Cd116WO4 crystal scintillators (mass of 1.162 kg) at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory. The half-life of Cd116 relative to the 2ν2β decay to the ground state of Sn116 was measured with the highest up-to-date accuracy as T1/2=(2.63-0.12+0.11)×1019 yr. A new improved limit on the 0ν2β decay of Cd116 to the ground state of Sn116 was set as T1/2≥2.2×1023 yr at 90% C.L., which is the most stringent known restriction for this isotope. It corresponds to the effective Majorana neutrino mass limit in the range ⟨mν⟩≤(1.0–1.7) eV, depending on the nuclear matrix elements used in the estimations. New improved half-life limits for the 0ν2β decay with majoron(s) emission, Lorentz-violating 2ν2β decay, and 2β transitions to excited states of Sn116 were set at the level of T1/2≥1020–1022 yr. New limits for the hypothetical lepton-number violating parameters (right-handed currents admixtures in weak interaction, the effective majoron-neutrino coupling constants, R-parity violating parameter, Lorentz-violating parameter, heavy neutrino mass) were set.

- Abstract
We report recent achievements in the development of scintillating bolometers to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{100}$Mo. The presented results have been obtained in the framework of the LUMINEU, LUCIFER and EDELWEISS collaborations, and are now part of the R\&D activities towards CUPID (CUORE Update with Particle IDentification), a proposed next-generation double-beta decay experiment based on the CUORE experience. We have developed a technology for the production of large mass ($\sim$1 kg), high optical quality, radiopure zinc and lithium molybdate crystal scintillators (ZnMoO$_4$ and Li$_2$MoO$_4$, respectively) from deeply purified natural and $^{100}$Mo-enriched molybdenum. The procedure is applied for a routine production of enriched crystals. Furthermore, the technology of a single detector module consisting of a large-volume ($\sim 100$~cm$^3$) Zn$^{100}$MoO$_4$ and Li$_2$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ scintillating bolometer has been established, demonstrating performance and radiopurity that are close to satisfy the demands of CUPID. In particular, the FWHM energy resolution of the detectors at 2615 keV --- near the $Q$-value of the double-beta transition of $^{100}$Mo (3034~keV) --- is $\approx$ 4--10~keV. The achieved rejection of $\alpha$-induced dominant background above 2.6~MeV is at the level of more than 99.9\%. The bulk activity of $^{232}$Th ($^{228}$Th) and $^{226}$Ra in the crystals is below 10 $\mu$Bq/kg. Both crystallization and detector technologies favor Li$_2$MoO$_4$, which was selected as a main element for the realization of a CUPID demonstrator (CUPID-0/Mo) with $\sim$7 kg of $^{100}$Mo.
