5. Stroboscopic wave packet description of time-dependent currents through ring-shaped nanostructures

Abstract

We present an implementation of a new method for explicit simulations of time-dependent electric currents through nanojunctions. The method is based on unitary propagation of stroboscopic wave packet states and is designed to treat open systems with fluctuating number of electrons while preserving full quantum coherence throughout the whole infinite system. We demonstrate the performance of the method on a model system consisting of a ring-shaped nanojunction with two semi-infinite tight-binding leads. Time-dependent electron current responses to abrupt bias turn-on or gate potential switching are computed for several ring configurations and ring-leads coupling parameters. The found current-carrying stationary states agree well with the predictions of the Landauer formula. As examples of genuinely time-dependent process we explore the presence of circulating currents in the rings in transient regimes and the effect of a time-dependent gate potential., Comment: corrections of typos compared to the previous version

Abstract

Interfaces between metals based on AlO$_{x}$ represent the most popular basis for Josephson junctions or, more recently, also for junctions exhibiting substantial tunneling magneto-resistance. We have performed a computational study of possible local geometric structures of such interfaces at the ab-initio DFT/GGA level of approximation to complement recent experimental data on ultra-thin AlO$_{x}$-based interfaces. Abstract

This paper lays out a semi-automatic approach to identifying regional variation in the grammar of Standard German. Our approach takes as input manually defined templates of grammatical constructions that are auto- matically instantiated over a corpus collected from regional newspapers. These instantiations are automatically ranked by a metric that quantifies how spe- cific an instantiation is for a region. Ranked lists of instantiations are compiled that contain instantiations specific to a region and are scanned manually by linguists to identify those that denote grammatical variants of Standard Ger- man. This approach enabled us to discover variants that so far have not been documented. With respect to research on variation within standard languages as seen from a more general perspective, we aim to contribute towards research strategies that clearly rely on empiricism rather than on intuition or bias.

Abstract

Der Beitrag thematisiert einen in der Forschung bislang kaum beachteten Parameter für grammatische Variation im Standard: die Arealität. Im ersten Teil folgen Begriffsklärungen, zunächst zum Terminus areal (mit einer Stellungnahme zur Debatte um das Deutsche als plurizentrische bzw. pluriareale Sprache), dann zu der Frage, wie Standard als Gebrauchsstandard definiert werden kann und in welcher Relation dazu der Terminus Kodex steht. Danach wird mit Blick auf das Projekt „Variantengrammatik des Deutschen“ aufgezeigt, wie areale grammatische Variation im Deutschen empirisch zu beschreiben ist. Der letzte Teil präsentiert Fallbeispiele, anhand derer sich das Erfassen von Varianten - von der Recherche in einem areal ausgewogenen Korpus bis zu ihrer Kodifikation in den Gebrauchsstandards des Deutschen - nachzeichnen lässt.

Abstract

Immersion pulmonary oedema, also referred to as swimming-induced pulmonary oedema, is a form of pulmonary oedema which usually occurs during swimming in cold water. The condition is most common in triathlon athletes; it was first reported in military divers. The main symptoms include acute dyspnoea, cough, and occasionally haemoptysis, which usually subside within approximately 48 hours. The pathomechanism is not fully understood, but oedema is suspected to be due to an increased systemic vascular resistance that overloads the left ventricle. The diagnostic process can be challenging and require multiple stages to rule out a number of other possible conditions. In view of the circumstances in which incidents typically occur, immersion pulmonary oedema poses an immediate life threat to individuals involved in selected forms of physical activity, where survival is often determined by appropriate training of medical services.

The assessment of elite athletes after SARS-CoV-2 infection gives rise to doubts concerning return-to-play decisions: what period of convalescence is needed and what diagnostic measures are appropriate. While cardiovascular protocols have been widely discussed in the literature, lung parenchyma imaging was only briefly mentioned, and the usefulness of lung ultrasound has been not considered yet.

Abstract

The 1:1 hexamethylbenzene (HMB)-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) complex shows a first-order phase transition at 230/218 K (heating/cooling) with no change of the space group. The neutron-diffraction studies reveal that this transition is related to a freezing of the rotation of methyl groups. The results for 100 K enabled precise determination of configuration of HMB center dot TCNQ complexes. The planes of HMB and TCNQ molecules from small angle (6 degrees) so that the dicyanomethylene group approaches the HMB molecule to a distance of 3.34 angstrom. The conformation of methyl groups was exactly determined. The quasielastic neutron-scattering spectra can be interpreted in terms of 120 degrees jumps with different activation barrier in low- and high-temperature phases, equal to 3.7 and 1.8 kJ/mol, respectively. These values are lower than that for neat HMB (6 kJ/mol). The conclusion can be drawn that the methyl groups can reorient more freely in the complex. This conclusion is in agreement with the results of inelastic neutron-scattering studies of low-frequency modes assigned to torsional vibrations of methyl groups. These frequencies are lower than those for neat HMB. The analyzed increase of frequencies of these modes as compared with free molecules can be interpreted as due to formation of unconventional C-(HY)-Y-... hydrogen bonds which are more pronounced in crystals of neat HMB than in those of HMB(.)TCNQ. The low-frequency librational modes can be treated as a sensitive measure of unconventional hydrogen bonds formed by the CH3 groups. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract

Despite the fact that more and more guidelines that systematize our knowledge are being published, infective endocarditis remains a considerable diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. This is partially caused by the variable course of the disease process and numerous potential complications with high mortality. We present a case of a 48-year-old police officer with an inflammatory process within the aortic valve that led to the development of peripheral emboli in the central nervous system, kidney, spleen and within the lumbosacral spine. The complexity of the clinical situation required the cooperation of various medical specialists and combined use of various imaging methods, including ultrasound. This ultimately enabled the correct diagnosis to be established and had a significant impact on the planning and monitoring of the diagnostic process.

34. Constructing Judgments: The Interaction between Adjectives and Clausal Complements in Italian

Abstract

This paper puts forward a corpus-based analysis of two constructions in Italian: “V + ADJ + infinitive clause” and “V + ADJ + che (‘that’) clause”. Some verbs, such as essere (‘be’) and sembrare (‘seem’) occur in both constructions; in addition, many adjectives can appear in the predicative complement position of both constructions. The che- clause and the infinitive construction are apparently semantically similar, both express- ing a judgment or an attitude (codified by the adjective) toward the content of the sub- ject clause. However, upon examining corpus data with a distinctive-collexeme analysis (Gries / Stefanowitsch 2004), subtle differences clearly emerge: the che-clause construc- tion tends to be associated with epistemic / evidential adjectives while the infinitive construction shows a stronger association with evaluative adjectives. As a result of the analysis, it can be stated that constructions appear to be characterized by a meaning (see Goldberg 2006), which can be influenced by lexical choices (adjectives, verbs, clitics).

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the degree of cardiorespiratory fitness and the function of the right ventricle (RV). 117 rowers, age 17.5±1.5 years. All subjects underwent cardiopulmonary exercise. Standard echocardiography and 2D speckle tracking echocardiography with evaluation of longitudinal strain in each segment of the RV (basal - RVLS-B; mid - RVLS-M, apical - RVLS-A) and global RV free-wall strain (RVLS-G) were performed. RVLS-B values were lower compared to the RVLS-M (-25.8±4.4 vs -29.3±3.5; p<0.001) and RVLS-A values (-25.8±4.4 vs -26.2±3.4; p=0.85). Correlations between VO2max and RVLS were observed in men: RVLS-G strain (r = 0.43; p <0.001); RVLS-B (r = 0.30; p = 0.02); RVLS-M (r = 0.38; p = 0.02). A similar relationship was not observed in the group of women. The strongest predictors corresponding to a change in global and basal strain were VO2max and training time: RVLS-G (VO2max: β = 0.18, p = 0.003; training time: β = -0.39; p = 0.02) and RVLS-B (VO2max: β = 0.23; p = 0.0001 training time: β = -1.16; p = 0.0001). The global and regional reduction of RV systolic function positively correlates with the level of fitness, and this relationship is observed already in young athletes. The character of the relationship between RV deformation parameters and the variables that determine the physical performance depend on gender. The dependencies apply to the proximal fragment of the RV inflow tract, which may be a response to the type of flow during exercise in endurance athletes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

One hundred and fifty hospital Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated on Polish hospitals during an outbreaks were used to evaluate usefulness of S. aureus phenotyping methods. According to the expression of resistance to methicillin (a marker of resistance to all beta-lactam antibiotics) all strains were classified as homogeneously of heterogeneously resistant to methicillin (methicillin resistant S. aureus--MRSA) and as susceptible to this antibiotic (methicillin-susceptible S. aureus--MSSA). All strains were analysed according to the resistance patterns to fifteen antistaphylococcal drugs, results of crystal violet test, phage patterns and results of biochemical fingerprinting by PhenePlate (PhP) System (BioSys inova). All MSSA analysed were resistant to penicillin and 22% to tetracycline, and only occasionally resistant to other antimicrobials. They showed sensitive to phages of all international and additional lytic groups. Heterogeneous MRSA were widely susceptible to almost all antimicrobials except tetracycline and were lysed by phages of Ist, IIIrd international groups and additional phages. All these strains produced penicillinases. Homogeneous MRSA were multi-drug resistant and were not typable by phages of Ist and IInd lytic groups and weakly typable by phages of IIIrd and additional groups. PhP Systems divided all used strains into 13 common (with two dominating) and 50 single strain PhP-types. The combination of various phenotyping methods may be useful in epidemiological investigation of hospitals.
