Cryptorchestia garbinii Ruffo, Tarocco and Latella, 2014 (Amphipoda: Talitridae), a semiterrestrial amphipod, reported (as Orchestia cavimana Heller, 1865) from the Polish inland waters, e.g., the lowermost Vistula River, for the first time in 2009. Now, we have reported this species from the upper Oder River, which is c.a. 350 km SE from the closest known localities near Berlin, Germany. We confirmed its identity by the DNA barcodes and showed that all individuals found so far in other countries in Central and Western Europe represent the same haplotype, excluding a singleton from the locus typicus of this species in Lake Garda, Italy.

Non-indigenous species (NIS) contribute to the decrease of native species’ diversity on a local and global scale. One of Europe’s most significant donors of freshwater invasions is the Ponto-Caspian Region. Following the construction of artificial canals connecting isolated waterbodies and the resulting heavy boat traffic, the Ponto-Caspian Amphipoda started to spread in Europe. Four amphipod species: Dikerogammarus haemobaphes, Dikerogammarus villosus, Pontogammarus robustoides and Chaetogammarus ischnus have invaded the Masurian Lakeland (North-eastern Poland). Based on literature and our data, we studied their distribution in 22 lakes in the region during the years 2001–2016. We analysed their distribution against several water quality parameters and levels of anthropogenic pressure. Our results also present the first records of two new invaders, D. villosus and C. ischnus, in the studied area. We show that the relative abundance and frequency of these two species rapidly increase and, simultaneously, the populations of the earlier invaders, i.e. D. haemobaphes and P. robustoides, decrease. The native species – Gammarus lacustris – seems to be negatively affected by NIS richness, as well as by the proximity of towns. The spread of NIS in the lakes appears to be facilitated by boating and the lower complexity of the shoreline. Our study shows how anthropogenic pressure, especially tourism, can facilitate bioinvasion, jeopardising native biodiversity unless appropriate regulations are implemented.

Astragalus membranaceus Fisch. ex Bunge (syn. Astragalus mongholicus Bunge) is one of the notable medicinal and food plants. Therefore, the aim of this study was to calculate the phenolic composition and antioxidant, antimicrobial, as well as enzyme inhibitory [acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), and tyrosinase (TYR)] activities with chemometric approaches of the hydromethanolic and water extracts of commercial A. membranaceus samples. Ten individual phenolic compounds were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and only quercetin was found at a level of above 80 µg/g DW in both extracts. Moreover, the highest antioxidant activity in DPPH, FRAP, ABTS, and CUPRAC assays was found in the sample containing the roots in loose form from USA. A. membranaceus extracts displayed the inhibition zone diameters within the range from 10 to 22 mm antimicrobial activity against S. aureus, while there were no inhibition zones in any extracts in case of E. coli. The extracts of A. membranaceous showed an inhibition rate below 40% against TYR, and among tested extracts, only two samples were able to inhibit BChE with IC50 values of above 30 µg/mL. Correlation analysis showed a highly positive relationship between their phenolic composition and antioxidant activity. Concluding, the obtained results confirmed that A. membranaceus commercial samples could be an important dietary source of natural antioxidants.

Ammonia solutions are widely used solvents for CO2 capture. However, a significant disadvantage of these solvents is secondary pollution of the purified gas stream by desorbed ammonia. In this work, α,ω-diols, and colloidal silica have been proposed to reduce this undesired effect. Ammonia solutions with the addition of ethylene glycol (EG), 1,3-propanediol (PRD), 1,4-butanediol (BUD), 1,5-pentanediol (PED), or 1,6-hexanediol (HED) and ammonia solution with the addition of diol and colloidal SiO2 were tested. The concentration of CO2 and NH3 in the exhaust gas was continuously measured during the experiments. Based on the recorded measurements, the number of moles of CO2 absorbed and the number of moles of NH3 lost were calculated. Mass transfer coefficients for CO2 absorption and NH3 desorption were also determined. The studies showed that CO2 absorption occurred faster in ammonia solutions with EG, PRD, BUD, and HED, and the CO2 loading was higher than in pure NH3 solution. The most effective additive improving CO2 absorption was BUD, followed by HED. SiO2 particles improved slightly the absorption efficiency in most of the tested diol solutions. All diols used inhibited the escape of ammonia, with PED having the most effective effect. However, adding silica particles effectively inhibited ammonia escape in all tested systems.

With the rise of modern technologies and the implementation of new businesses and brands, the urge for publicity has generated a demand for advertisements. As the key factor for spreading awareness and attracting new consumers, advertising has gained power by employing the written word as the best means of communication. Social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest and many others) are chosen more and more often as they are used by a profuse number of potential customers. A lot of companies have acknowledged that thoughtfully chosen linguistic tools might enhance the popularity of the promoted product or service. Thus, the article aims to unveil the effectiveness of phonetic and semantic devices in advertisement slogans, analyse linguistic peculiarities that boost public interest and curiosity, specify which linguistic techniques evoke most of the emotions and make the advertisement both gripping and memorable. The research was based on the application of theoretical and descriptive comparative linguistic analysis methods. Having analysed a great many advertisement slogans, the number of samples carefully elucidated and presented in this article was 13, as they contained the required linguistic segments set in the objectives of this research, i.e., onomatopoeia, alliteration, rhyme, and rhythm, as well as denotative and connotative elements of the lexical meaning. The article reveals that the proper use of linguistic devices benefits to attract and manipulate the target audience; phonetic devices enable to reach the effect of memorability, whereas semantic devices play a crucial role in the domain of emotions.

Sour cherries are a perishable raw material, and their preservation is needed to extend their availability to consumers. Improving drying techniques is desirable to ensure the highest quality of products. This study aimed to determine image textures from color channels R, G, B, L, a, b, X, Y, and Z; color parameters L*, a*, and b*; the color difference (ΔE) of raw materials and dried fruit; and the sensory attributes of dried sour cherry products prepared using an innovative approach. Three sour cherry cultivars, ‘Nefris’, ‘Debreceni Botermo’, and ‘Łutówka’, were used in the experiment. Sour cherries were subjected to freezing and pit removal before drying. The simultaneous osmotic–microwave–vacuum drying was carried out in one process lasting an hour and combining osmotic dehydration using a 40 °Bx sucrose solution and microwave–vacuum drying at microwave powers of 100 W for 900 s, 300 W for 900 s, 250 W for 900 s, and 0 W for stabilization for 900 s and a pressure of 30 ± 2 hPa. After drying, the quality assessment of products was performed using non-destructive image analysis and color measurements, as well as sensory analysis, including non-destructively and destructively assessed attributes. The highest changes in textures occurred for the GHMean (histogram’s mean for color channel G) (from 30.69 to 22.64) and LHMean (histogram’s mean for color channel L) (from 66.93 to 59.07) of images of the cultivar ‘Łutówka’, and the smallest changes were found for the cultivar ‘Nefris’. Drying had a statistically significant effect on the color parameters of the ‘Debreceni Botermo’ and ‘Łutówka’ sour cherries. The value of ΔE was the highest (10.44) for ‘Debreceni Botermo’ and the smallest (1.98) for ‘Nefris’. All cultivars of dried sour cherries had very high values of overall quality, reaching 8.9 for ‘Nefris’ and ‘Debreceni Botermo’ and 8.8 for ‘Łutówka’. The ‘Nefris’ sour cherry was characterized by the highest value of flavor of 9.0. All dried samples were attractive in terms of their external appearance. The sensory parameters related to taste, texture, and crunchiness were also satisfactory. Innovative simultaneous osmotic–microwave–vacuum drying allowed for the obtainment of dried sour cherries with a high quality, including acceptable sensory attributes.

Chimeric virus-like particles (cVLPs) show great potential in improving public health as they are safe and effective vaccine candidates. The capsid protein of caliciviruses has been described previously as a self-assembling, highly immunogenic delivery platform. The ability to significantly induce cellular and humoral immunity can be used to boost the immune response to low immunogenic foreign antigens displayed on the surface of VLPs. Capsid proteins of caliciviruses despite sequence differences share similar architecture with structural loops that can be genetically modified to present foreign epitopes on the surface of cVLPs. Here, based on the VP1 protein of norovirus (NoV), we investigated the impact of the localization of the epitope in different structural loops of the P domain on the immunogenicity of the presented epitope. In this study, three distinct loops of NoV VP1 protein were genetically modified to present a multivalent influenza virus epitope consisting of a tandem repeat of M2/NP epitopes. cVLPs presenting influenza virus-conserved epitopes in different localizations were produced in the insect cells and used to immunize BALB/c mice. Specific reaction to influenza epitopes was compared in sera from vaccinated mice to determine whether the localization of the foreign epitope has an impact on the immunogenicity.

The article concerns the issue of equal opportunities for disabled employees as sustainable participation in the labor market in selected workplaces in Poland. Disabled people are part of society; therefore, they should not be discriminated against by exclusion and allowed to participate fully in public life. This work analyzes scientific publications and fragments of reports, which have made it possible to draw conclusions on what areas of life disabled people have problems with regarding functioning and what should be changed to improve their quality of life. The aim of the article was to analyze examples of facilities used, among others, at universities that allow disabled people to move safety and freely. The substantive scope includes reference to Polish legal regulations regarding the process of employing disabled people in a balanced labor market against the background of statistical data. The article indicates that workplace facilities for disabled people (mobile and visually impaired) have a positive impact on the functioning of the rest of society due to the elimination of architectural barriers. The determination of the optimal harvest date is very important to obtain the desired apple quality. This study was aimed at evaluating the impact of the harvest date on selected properties of the following red-fleshed apples: ‘Alex Red’, ‘Trinity’, and ‘Roxana’. The color parameters of skin and flesh were measured using a portable spectrophotometer. The apple slices were imaged using a digital camera to extract flesh image textures. Then, the contents of chemical compounds, such as sugars, acids, and polyphenols were measured. The greatest significant changes with the delay in the harvest date were observed in the values of parameter a* of red-fleshed apple skin (from 21.57 to 25.42 for ‘Alex Red’, from 22.65 to 26.81 for ‘Trinity’, and from 21.82 to 30.00 for ‘Roxana’) and apple flesh (from 29.06 to 32.80 for ‘Alex Red’ and from 32.96 to 36.30 for ‘Trinity’); image textures (RHMean—from 227.6 to 236.5 for ‘Alex Red’, from 231.8 to 236.3 for ‘Trinity’, and from 217.8 to 227.9 for ‘Roxana’, and SHMean—from 126.0 to 135.6 for ‘Alex Red’, from 127.4 to 143.4 for ‘Trinity’, and from 58.4 to 96.0 for ‘Roxana’); the total sugar content—from 85.6 to 90.9 g kg−1 for ‘Alex Red’ and from 112 to 128 g kg−1 for ‘Trinity’; total pectin—from 6278 to 6008 mg·100 g−1 for ‘Alex Red’, from 6196 to 6401 mg·100 g−1 for ‘Trinity’, and from 5912 to 6807 mg·100 g−1 for ‘Roxana’; and total phenolic content—from 536.1 to 501.9 mg kg−1 for ‘Alex Red’, from 515.5 to 573.3 mg kg−1 for ‘Trinity’, and from 1121.3 to 1293.3 mg kg−1 for ‘Roxana’. The linear relationships with the Pearson’s correlation coefficients (R) reaching 0.999 between the image texture from color channel a and color parameter L*, and −0.999 for the image feature from color channel R vs. color parameter a* of the flesh, and image texture from channel X vs. anthocyanins were confirmed.

Dried red-fleshed apples are considered a promising high-quality product from the functional foods category. The objective of this study was to compare the flesh features of freeze-dried red-fleshed apples belonging to the ‘Alex Red’, ‘Trinity’, ‘314’, and ‘602’ genotypes and indicate which parameters and shapes of dried samples are the most useful to distinguish apple genotypes. Apple samples were at the stage of harvest maturity. The average fruit weight, starch index, internal ethylene concentration, flesh firmness, total soluble sugar content, and titratable acidity were determined. One hundred apple slices with a thickness of 4 mm and one hundred cubes with dimensions of 1.5 cm × 1.5 cm × 1.5 cm of each genotype were subjected to freeze-drying. For each apple sample (slice or cube), 2172 image texture parameters were extracted from images in 12 color channels, and color parameters L*, a*, and b* were determined. The classification models were developed based on a set of selected image textures and a set of combined selected image textures and color parameters of freeze-dried apple slices and cubes using various traditional machine-learning algorithms. Models built based on selected textures of slice images in 11 selected color channels correctly classified freeze-dried red-fleshed apple genotypes with an overall accuracy reaching 90.25% and mean absolute error of 0.0545; by adding selected color parameters (L*, b*) to models, an increase in the overall accuracy to 91.25% and a decrease in the mean absolute error to 0.0486 were observed. The classification of apple cube images using models including selected texture parameters from images in 11 selected color channels was characterized by an overall accuracy of up to 74.74%; adding color parameters (L*, a*, b*) to models resulted in an increase in the overall accuracy to 80.50%. The greatest mixing of cases was observed between ‘Alex Red’ and ‘Trinity’ as well as ‘314’ and ‘602’ apple slices and cubes. The developed models can be used in practice to distinguish freeze-dried red-fleshed apples in a non-destructive and objective manner. It can avoid mixing samples belonging to different genotypes with different chemical properties. Further studies can focus on using deep learning in addition to traditional machine learning to build models to distinguish dried red-fleshed apple samples. Moreover, other drying techniques can be applied, and image texture parameters and color features can be used to predict the changes in flesh structure and estimate the chemical properties of dried samples.

In the present study, the chemical composition and bioactive properties of commercially available Withania somnifera samples were evaluated. The hydromethanolic and aqueous extracts of the tested samples were analyzed in terms of phenolic compound composition, ascorbic acid content, antioxidant and antibacterial activity, and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) inhibitory activities. Polyphenols and ascorbic acid content, as well as the antioxidant activity, were higher in the aqueous extracts than in the hydromethanolic extracts. Generally, aqueous extracts presented higher antioxidant activity than the hydromethanolic ones, especially in the case of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) assay. Moreover, higher amounts of phenolic acids and flavonoids were found in the hydromethanolic extracts compared to the aqueous ones. Regarding the antibacterial properties, samples 4, 6, and 10 showed the best overall performance with growth-inhibitory activities against all the examined bacteria strains. Finally, the aqueous and hydromethanolic extracts were the most efficient extracts in terms of AChE and BChE inhibitory activities, respectively. In conclusion, our results indicate that W. somnifera possesses important bioactive properties which could be attributed to the high amounts of phenolic compounds. However, a great variability was recorded in commercially available products, suggesting significant differences in the origin of product and the processing method.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the fruit quality of 13 Asian pear cultivars grown in climatic conditions of central Poland. The following cultivars were tested: ‘Chojuro’, ‘Hayatama’, ‘Hosui’, ‘Kosui’, ‘Yuan Huang’, ‘Nijisseiki’, ‘Dżin Li’, ‘Er Shi Shinge’, ‘Er Jang Li’, ‘Golden 20th’, ‘Min Czi Li’, ‘San Li’, and ‘Shinseiki’. Pears were harvested in Experimental Orchard of Research Institute of Horticulture in Dąbrowice (near Skierniewice). Fruits were stored for 10 weeks at 0 °C in regular atmospheric conditions. Flesh firmness (FF), total soluble solids (TSS), and titratable acidity (TA) were measured at harvest and after the storage followed with 1 and 7 days of shelf life (SL) at 18 °C. After the storage, the sensory evaluation was also performed. Among the tested cultivars, ‘Min Czi Li’ and ‘San Li’ were the most firm (above 45 N) and ‘Kosui’ was the least firm (below 28 N) at harvest time. High amount of TSS (above 11% in both seasons and harvest dates) was observed in ‘Chojuro’, ‘Hayatama’, ‘Kosui’, ‘Yuan Huang’, and ‘Er Jang Li’ pears. Low TSS (not more than 10.6% at harvest) was observed in ‘Nijisseiki’, ‘Dżin Li’, and ‘Er Shi Shinge’ cultivars. The large differences among cultivars were observed in TA. High TA was observed in ‘Nijisseiki’ (above 0.32% in all terms of analyses) and low TA in ‘Hayatama’ and ‘Kosui’ (below 0.14%). All of the evaluated cultivars can be stored for 10 weeks at 0 °C in regular atmosphere without major negative impact on their quality characteristics. Fruits showed a slight (sometimes significant) decrease in FF after storage and a slight or no changes in TSS and TA. In sensory evaluations, ‘Chojuro’, ‘Hayatama’, ‘Hosui’, ‘Kosui’, ‘Yuan Huang’, ‘Er Jang Li’, ‘Er Shi Shinge’, and ‘Shinseiki’ (mostly cultivars characterized by high TSS) obtained highest scores for the overall quality (above 5.0 points in 10 points scale).

To study possibility of protection of sweet cherry fruit against cracking several rows of ‘Lapins’ sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) trees grafted on ‘Colt’ rootstock, spaced 5 × 2.5 m and trained to a central leader were covered with a plastic foil to a height of 5 m. Several rows were left uncovered as a control. In the years 2016 and 2018, sun irradiation, air temperature and fruit quality were evaluated. The plastic cover reduced solar irradiation under the tunnel roof by around 40%. Light distribution within tree canopies was depleted by roughly 50%, but in the lower parts of the tree canopies, it was reduced to 6%, which is below the critical level (20%) estimated for apple trees. These results indicate the necessity to remove the covers as soon as possible after harvesting. Mean daily temperature near the ground was lower under the covers than outside, but at the height of 4.0 m, daily mean temperature was 0.4 °C higher and mean temperature during midday hours was 1.5 °C higher. The plastic covering reduced the fruit cracking from about 20% to 2% in both seasons but did not affect the fruit yield. The plastic covering did not affect the firmness and antioxidant activity and total anthocyanin content, but in the year 2018, it reduced the mean fruit weight, soluble solid, titratable acidity, dry matter and total polyphenols content.

Two plum cultivars ‘Record’ and ‘Empress’ and one prune cultivar ‘Common Prune’ were planted in spring 2014, spaced at 4.5 × 1.5 × 2.0 m, to be trained to the “Y”- and “V”-trellising systems for mechanical harvesting of dessert fruits with a canopy-contact harvester. The applied trellising systems were compared with the standard central leader system at the same spacing. Trellised trees showed a tendency to grow less well than leader-trained trees, but during the four years of training, they created a higher canopy volume than the control trees because of their spreading form. Trellised trees were able to give yields comparable to those of standard trees. Light distribution within the tree canopy was acceptable in all the training systems. After 4 years of training, the trees were suitable for mechanical harvesting. The effectiveness of mechanical harvesting varied from 85% to 90%. The quality of the fruits harvested with a canopy-contact harvester was comparable to that of manually picked fruits. The consumption of quality of fruits after mechanical harvesting rated on a 5-grade scale was 0.5 grade lower than that of manually harvested fruits. These fruits were acceptable in the local fruit market. Mechanical harvesting was 10–30 times faster compared to manual picking. The cost of the trellising system calculated per 1 ha was 2.0 times higher than that of the standard system.

The aim of the study was to assess the usefulness of hybrid drying methods (convective-microwave and convective-microwave-ultrasound) for sour cherry fruit preservation compared to convective drying. As the raw material, three sour cherry cultivars varying in quality characteristics (‘Łutówka’, ‘Debreceni Bötermo’, ‘Nefris’) were used. Before drying, fruits were subjected to osmotic treatment. Three different drying methods were examined: 1) convective (C), 2) hybrid with microwaves (C-MV) and 3) hybrid with microwaves and ultrasound (C-MV-US). As the quality indicators of the investigated processes, the changes in chemical composition, including alterations in the main groups of bioactive components, as well as in the antioxidant potential were monitored at each production stage. It was found that, when compared to convective drying, the use of the hybrid techniques allowed the drying time to be reduced from 9 to just 3 hours. Furthermore, employing hybrid drying eliminated the problems associated with the dehydration barrier observed during convective drying of the cultivar ‘Debreceni Bötermo’. Regrettably, although the ultrasound used as the additional source of energy in the hybrid method slightly improved water evaporation, in general no significant effect on the retention of phenolic compounds was found. Irrespectively of the drying method, the effect of the cultivar proved to be crucial to the quality of the final product. Under the same processing conditions, ‘Nefris’ turned out to be the most promising cultivar for producing ready-to-eat fruit snacks of high nutritional value.

The determination of the optimal harvest date is very important to obtain the desired apple quality. This study was aimed at evaluating the impact of the harvest date on selected properties of the following red-fleshed apples: 'Alex Red', 'Trinity', and 'Roxana'. The color parameters of skin and flesh were measured using a portable spectrophotometer. The apple slices were imaged using a digital camera to extract flesh image textures. Then, the contents of chemical compounds, such as sugars, acids, and polyphenols were measured. The greatest significant changes with the delay in the harvest date were observed in the values of parameter a* of red-fleshed apple skin (from 21.57 to 25.42 for 'Alex Red', from 22.65 to 26.81 for 'Trinity', and from 21.82 to 30.00 for 'Roxana') and apple flesh (from 29.06 to 32.80 for 'Alex Red' and from 32.96 to 36.30 for 'Trinity'); image textures (RHMean—from 227.6 to 236.5 for 'Alex Red', from 231.8 to 236.3 for 'Trinity', and from 217.8 to 227.9 for 'Roxana', and SHMean—from 126.0 to 135.6 for 'Alex Red', from 127.4 to 143.4 for 'Trinity', and from 58.4 to 96.0 for 'Roxana'); the total sugar content—from 85.6 to 90.9 g kg−1 for 'Alex Red' and from 112 to 128 g kg−1 for 'Trinity'; total pectin—from 6278 to 6008 mg·100 g−1 for 'Alex Red', from 6196 to 6401 mg·100 g−1 for 'Trinity', and from 5912 to 6807 mg·100 g−1 for 'Roxana'; and total phenolic content—from 536.1 to 501.9 mg kg−1 for 'Alex Red', from 515.5 to 573.3 mg kg−1 for 'Trinity', and from 1121.3 to 1293.3 mg kg−1 for 'Roxana'. The linear relationships with the Pearson's correlation coefficients (R) reaching 0.999 between the image texture from color channel a and color parameter L*, and −0.999 for the image feature from color channel R vs. color parameter a* of the flesh, and image texture from channel X vs. anthocyanins were confirmed. Rosa canina L. (dog rose) is a rich source of phenolic compounds that offer great hope for the prevention of chronic human diseases. Herein, wild and commercial samples of dog rose were chemically characterized with respect to their phenolic composition by liquid chromatography coupled to diode array detection and electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-DAD-ESI/MS). Furthermore, in vitro antioxidant properties and antibacterial activity of dog rose fruits and leaves hydromethanolic extracts and infusions were also evaluated. The results revealed that wild and commercial fruits of dog rose are similar in terms of l(+)-ascorbic acid, total phenolics (TPC), total flavonoids (TFC) and total phenolic acids (TPAC) content, individual phenolic constituents and antioxidant activity. Moreover, the fruits had lower levels of phenolic compounds and also revealed lower biological activity than the leaves. On the other hands, the highest content of TPC, TFC, TPAC, individual phenolic constituents, DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) scavenging activity and FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) were found in the leaf’s infusions. They were also the only ones to show antibacterial activity. Overall, these finding confirmed usefulness of R. canina L. leaves and fruits as a rich source of bioactive phenolic compounds with potential use in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries.
