This study explores the journey of a model for stakeholder involvement called RISCOM. Originally developed within the field of radioactive waste management in Sweden, it was later used in the Czech Republic to re-establish public dialogue in the process of siting a geological repository. This case offers an opportunity to empirically study the fragility and ambiguous results of organized spread of public involvement across various domains of technological innovation and national contexts. We show how three circumstances – (1) the ambition to make RISCOM an internationally used model for public dialogue, (2) the specific situation in the Czech siting process, and (3) the short-lived and limited success of the subsequent Czech dialogues by Swedish design – were intrinsically related and sustained each other. Better understanding of such complexities might contribute to a more realistic attitude toward technologized democracy, i.e., toward practices of public deliberation increasingly becoming instrumental, transferable, and depoliticized.

in unserer aktuellen Forschung beschäftigen wir uns mit der Frage, wie Erfahrungen wie "die Stimme des Herrn hören" oder eine Erscheinung der Jungfrau Maria zum einen in psychiatrischen Kontexten und zum anderen in der Praxis katholischer Geistlicher behandelt werden. Wie wird der Status solcher Phänomene ausgehandelt? Unter welchen Bedingungen gelten sie entweder als eine legitime religiöse Erfahrung oder als Symptom einer seelischen Erkrankung? Unser eigener Untersuchungsansatz hierbei ist "symmetrisch" – es gibt keine Apriori-Festlegung auf entweder medizinische oder religiöse Erklärungen. In einem Beitrag zu dem Film "Der Exorzismus von Emily Rose" (erstmals 2005 ausgestrahlt) haben wir einen solchen Ansatz (der z.B. in der zeitgenössischen Wissenschaftssoziologie durchaus üblich ist) bereits zu erläutern und zu demonstrieren versucht. Wir diskutierten dort die sehr ambige Beziehung zwischen einer medizinischen vs. spirituellen Interpretation der Lebensgeschichte eines jungen Mädchens, das nach einem missglückten Exorzismus gestorben war (KONOPÁSEK & PALEČEK, 2006). Die zentrale Frage zu dem hier veröffentlichten Artikel war, ob ein solcher symmetrischer Ansatz auch für die von Bedeutung sein könnte, die wir beforschen. Um sie zu beantworten, haben wir vier katholische Geistliche interviewt, nachdem wir sie zunächst gebeten hatten, den Film zu sehen und unseren 2006 erschienenen Beitrag zu lesen. Auf der Grundlage der Gespräche (und unter Hinzuziehung weiteren empirischen Materials aus unserer aktuellen Forschung) werden wir im Folgenden zu zeigen versuchen, ob und in welcher Weise unsere eigene epistemische Perspektive mit den Sichtweisen und Positionen unserer Gesprächspartner vereinbar war. Für uns selbst erlaubte dieses reflexive "Experiment" nicht nur, einige (Miss-) Verständnisse zwischen uns und unseren Forschungspartnern zu klären, sondern es hat auch zu unserem eigenen Verstehen des Prinzips der Symmetrie in unserer Forschung und in der untersuchten sozialen Praxis beigetragen. How is the status of these phenomena negotiated by the participants? Under what conditions do they become instances of legitimate religious experience or, alternatively, symptoms of mental illness? We approach the study of these issues "symmetrically"—we do not prefer a priori medical or spiritual explanations. Some time ago, we demonstrated and explained such an approach (which is common, e.g., in contemporary sociology of science), and its relevance for our research, in an analytic paper on the movie "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" (released in 2005). The paper discusses a highly ambiguous relationship, pictured in the film, between medical and spiritual interpretation of the story of a young girl who was considered possessed by demons and who died after unsuccessful exorcism (KONOPÁSEK & PALEČEK, 2006). The question that has inspired this paper is: can such a symmetrical approach be of any relevance also for people we are studying? In an attempt to get an answer, we have interviewed four Catholic priests on this particular issue. The priests had been asked to watch the movie on Emily Rose and read our paper on it in preparation for the interview. Based on the subsequent discussions (and also on some other empirical data of our current research), we wanted to shed some light on whether and in what ways our specific epistemic perspective coheres with the views and positions of our respondents. It turned out that this reflexive research experiment not only helped to clarify points of mis/understanding between us and our respondents, but also contributed to our own appreciation of the role of symmetry in our current research project as well as in the studied social practice. El articulo debate una relación altamente ambigua, presentada en la película, entre la interpretación médica la espiritual de la historia de una joven que fue considerada poseída por demonios y que murió después de un exorcismo fallido (KONOPÁSEK & PALEČEK 2006). La pregunta que ha inspirado este artículo es: ¿puede un enfoque simétrico ser de alguna relevancia para personas a las que estamos estudiando? En un intento por obtener una respuesta, hemos entrevistado a cuatro sacerdotes católicos sobre este tema en particular. A los sacerdotes se les ha pedido que vean la película acerca de Emily Rose y lean nuestro artículo sobre ella, en preparación para la entrevista. Basados en las discusiones posteriores (y también en algunos otros datos empíricos de nuestra investigación actual), queríamos arrojar algo de luz sobre y en qué formas nuestra perspectiva epistémica es coherente con los puntos de vista y opiniones de nuestros entrevistados. Resultó que este experimento de investigación reflexiva no solo ayudó a clarificar nuestros malentendidos con nuestros entrevistados, sino que también contribuyó a nuestra propia apreciación del papel de la simetría en nuestro proyecto actual de investigación así como en la práctica social estudiada. Wie entsteht eine neue Qualität, die als "soziologisches Verstehen" bezeichnet werden kann, im Prozess der qualitativen Datenanalyse? Die (konventionelle) methodologische Antwort auf diese Frage lautet: durch mentale Prozesse und konzeptuelle Arbeit. In meinem Beitrag schlage ich eine zusätzliche, eher soziologische als methodologische Sichtweise vor, genauer: eine Sichtweise, die der zeitgenössischen Wissenssoziologie verpflichtet ist. In diesem Sinne verstehe ich qualitative Datenanalyse als ein Set materialer Praktiken. Beispielhaft ausgehend von der Methodologie der Grounded Theory (GTM) und der Analyse-Software Atlas.ti versuche ich zu zeigen, dass Denken und Handeln auch in diesem spezifischen Bereich untrennbar verbunden sind, und dass eine wissenssoziologische Perspektive hilft, sonst schwer greifbare Prozesse besser nachzuvollziehen. Software ist dann nicht mehr ein einfaches Kodier- und Suchwerkzeug, sondern wird zur komplexen virtuellen Umgebung für körperliche und praxisbasierte Prozesse der Wissensgenerierung. Und auch die GTM erscheint in einem teilweise neuen Licht, wenn sie nicht (nur) als Set methodologischer und theoretischer Konzepte diskutiert wird, sondern (auch) als das, was wir praktisch tun, wenn wir Daten analysieren. GTM wird auf diese Weise kompatibel mit radikal-konstruktivistischen, textuellen und teilweise sogar post-strukturellen Paradigmen der Interpretation (von denen sie sich lange entfernt zu halten versucht hat). Finally, grounded theory methodology might appear in a somewhat different light: when described not in terms of methodological or theoretical concepts but rather in terms of what we practically do with the analysed data, it becomes perfectly compatible with the radical constructivist, textualist, or even post-structuralist paradigms of interpretation (from which it has allegedly departed by a long way). Este artículo sugiere un punto de vista diferente, sociológico en lugar de metodológico; o más precisamente, un punto de vista inspirado en la sociología contemporánea de la ciencia. Describe el análisis cualitativo como un conjunto de prácticas materiales. Al tomar el trabajo con el programa Atlas.ti y la metodología de teoría fundamentada como un ejemplo, se argumenta que pensar es inseparable de hacer, incluso en este dominio. Se argumenta que al adoptar la perspectiva sugerida podríamos ser capaces de hablar en forma más apropiada acerca de procesos de análisis cualitativo que son difíciles de abordar de otra manera. Además, los programas de software serían entendidos no solo como "meras herramientas" para codificar y recuperar, sino también como complejos ambientes virtuales para hacer conocimiento corpóreo basado en la práctica. In der Tschechischen Republik und in der Slowakei ist die Ära lebensgeschichtlicher Archive, die einen breiteren Zugang für Sozialwissenschaftler bieten, erst im Kommen. Das Gleiche gilt für Diskussionen über ethische und methodologische Probleme bezüglich der Wiederverwendung von Forschungsdaten. Dennoch haben die Autoren – wie viele andere Kollegen – die Sammlungen ihrer lebensgeschichtlichen Interviews immer wieder verwendet, um neue Themen zu untersuchen, die oft sehr weit von den ursprünglichen Forschungsfragen und -zielen entfernt liegen. In diesem Beitrag diskutieren wir methodologische Probleme, die bei einer solchen Praxis auftreten. Wir zeigen, dass die ethnomethodologische Perspektive auf der einen Seite eine besondere Qualität und Exaktheit der Interviews erfordert sowie eine Beschreibung der Interviewsituation (ggf. kann die Unzulänglichkeit eines Transkripts mit Hilfe der archivierten Tonbänder korrigiert werden). Auf der anderen Seite müssen die Wissenschaftler jedoch aufgrund der ethnomethodologischen Perspektive ihre Forschungsziele so formulieren, dass sie dem entsprechen, was die Daten selber bieten. Das methodologische Problem, das sich aus der Wiederverwendung von Daten ergibt, kann weder im voraus noch generell gelöst werden. However, secondary analysis of qualitative data is not limited to documents that are stored in public archives. It happens quite often that researchers make use of an interview transcript, or a part of it, which has originally been gathered for a different occasion. Thus, they use these data for studying new topics that are sometimes far from the original research questions and objectives. In this paper we discuss some methodological problems arising from such practice. We show that, on one hand, the ethnomethodological perspective is especially demanding on the quality and the pinpoint accuracy of transcripts and the descriptions of the interviews by which the narratives were elicited (field memos). On the other hand, however, the ethnomethodological perspective orients scholars to formulate their research objectives according to what the data itself offers. The methodological problems related to the re-use of data can hardly be resolved in advance and on a general level. Sin embargo, el análisis secundario de los datos cualitativos no está limitado a documentos almacenado en los archivos públicos. Ocurre con frecuencia que los investigadores pueden hacer uso de la transcripción de una entrevista o parte de ella, aunque ésta originalmente fue recolectada con otros propósitos. De esta manera los investigadores emplean los datos en el estudio de nuevos temas, los cuales a veces distan mucho de las preguntas y objetivos investigativos originales. En este trabajo discutimos algunos problemas metodológicos que surgen de esta práctica. Demostramos que, por un lado, la perspectiva etnometodológica es especialmente exigente con relación a la calidad y absoluta fidelidad de las transcripciones y descripciones de las entrevistas en que las narrativas se encuentran (notas de campo). Por otro lado, sin embargo, la perspectiva etnometodológica orienta a los investigadores a la formulación de sus objetivos investigativos en función de lo que los datos le ofrecen. The aim of this thesis is discussion about the archives of former Czechoslovak STB (State Security). It shows how some people argued about authenticity of those documents trying to prove their falseness or genuineness.This discussion is then brought into context with collective memory issues.
