A 57 Fe nucleus in the solar core could emit a 14.4-keV monochromatic axion through the M1 transition if a hypothetical elementary particle, axion, exists to solve the strong CP problem. Transition edge sensor (TES) X-ray microcalorimeters can detect such axions very efficiently if they are again converted into photons by a 57 Fe absorber. We have designed and produced a dedicated TES array with 57 Fe absorbers for the solar axion search. The iron absorber is set next to the TES, keeping a certain distance to reduce the iron-magnetization effect on the spectroscopic performance. A gold thermal transfer strap connects them. A sample pixel irradiated from a 55 Fe source detected 698 pulses. In contrast to thermal simulations, we consider that the pulses include either events produced in an iron absorber or gold strap at a fraction dependent on the absorption rate of each material. Furthermore, photons deposited on the iron absorber are detected through the strap as intended. The identification of all events still needs to be completed. Several issues in developing transition edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeters for the search of monochromatic solar axions expected at 14.4 keV are studied. The potential problem of developing TES's of this purpose is in that an axion absorber of 57 Fe must be placed in close vicinity of a TES. We estimated the minimum distance to avoid magnetic interference from iron using magnetic FEM simulations, and found it 30 μ m for an iron of 5 μ m thickness. We fabricated a TES with a 10 μ m thick iron membrane separated by 60 μ m. We confirmed the superconducting transition for this TES. However, both the residual normal resistance and the transition temperature was different from those of TES without iron. We also estimated the low-temperature thermal conductivity of an iron membrane by measuring the low-temperature electrical resistance and by applying the Wiedemann–Franz law. We estimated the pulse-shape dependency on the interaction position within the 57 Fe converted using thermal FEM simulations. We investigated the pressure coefficients of the superconducting order parameters at the ground state of ferromagnetic superconductors based on the microscopic single band model by Linder et al. The superconducting gaps (i) similar to the ones seen in the thin film of A2 phase in liquid He and (ii) with the line node were used. This study shows that we would be able to estimate the pressure coefficients of the superconducting and magnetic order parameters at the ground state of ferromagnetic superconductors. The binary system η Carinae is a unique laboratory that facilitates the study of particle acceleration to high energies under a wide range of conditions, including extremely high densities around periastron. To date, no consensus has emerged as to the origin of the gigaelectronvolt γ-ray emission in this important system. With a re-analysis of the full Fermi-LAT data set for η Carinae, we show that the spectrum is consistent with a pion decay origin. A single population leptonic model connecting X-ray to -ray emission can be ruled out. We revisit our physical model from 2015, based on two acceleration zones associated with the termination shocks in the winds of both stars. We conclude that inverse Compton emission from in-situ accelerated electrons dominates the hard X-ray emission detected with NuSTAR at all phases away from periastron and that pion-decay from shock accelerated protons is the source of -ray emission. Very close to periastron there is a pronounced dip in hard X-ray emission, concomitant with the repeated disappearance of the thermal X-ray emission, which we interpret as due to the suppression of significant electron acceleration in the system. Within our model, the residual emission seen by NuSTAR at this phase can be accounted for with secondary electrons produced in interactions of accelerated protons, which agrees with the variation in pion-decay -ray emission. This study attempted to develop detection methods for solar axions using transition-edge-sensor (TES) microcalorimeters. Since the axion absorber comprised of iron-57 (57Fe) is electroplated upon the membrane instead of directly onto the TES itself (with the absorber hence thermally connected to the TES via a gold thermal strap), some of the heat deposited into the absorber consequently escapes into the heat bath through the membrane before being detected by the TES. If the heat-loss depends upon the axion interaction position within the absorber, position dependence may degrade the energy resolution. Therefore, this study endeavored to evaluate the dependence of heat-loss and pulse shape on axion incident position with the COMSOL Multiphysics software package (using a finite element method). We have developed a four-pixel array of superconducting transition-edge sensors with gold absorbers for the detection of a 29.2 keV γ -ray doublet decay from 229 Th. To identify the decay, an energy resolution better than 20 eV full width at half maximum (FWHM) is needed. We measured an energy resolution of 14 eV FWHM for 26 keV γ -ray decay from an 241 Am isotope in combined data of three pixels. We describe the design and the performance of the devices and discuss the baseline correction method to compensate the variation in the baseline, which was observed during the evaluation of the performance using the 241 Am isotope. Abstract: Magnetic thermal expansions of itinerant electron antiferromagnets are discussed along the Grüneisen''s approach to the thermal expansions due to lattice vibrations. We show that the thermal expansion consists of two terms, , that corresponds to the Moriya–Usami''s result, and a new term derived for ferromagnets recently. Comparison of these terms shows that the second term becomes dominant at low temperatures around the magnetic instability point, leading to the -linear behavior there for nearly antiferromagnetic compounds. Study Question: Does spontaneous endometriosis in cynomolgus monkeys have the characteristics required of a good experimental model?Summary Answer: Spontaneous endometriosis in cynomolgus monkeys exhibited similar clinicopathological characteristics to the human disease and was useful as an experimental model.What Is Known Already: The prevalence of endometriosis in autopsied cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) in a breeding colony was reported to be 28.7% in 1993. The histopathological findings we reported recently showed that components of spontaneous endometriosis were not only endometriotic epithelium and stromal cells (CD10-positive) with hemorrhage and inflammation, but also smooth muscle metaplasia and nerve fibers.Study Design, Size, Duration: During routine medical examinations at a research facility from 2008 to 2012, 614 female cynomolgus monkeys of reproductive age (6-25 years) were screened for endometriosis by the presence of regular menstrual bleeding, serum CA125 levels and palpation of the abdomen. In total, 29 monkeys were selected as subjects for the following study.Participants/materials, Setting, Methods: Of the 29 monkeys selected, 15 were diagnosed with endometriosis by laparoscopy and/or open surgery. The monkeys were monitored by observing their general condition, and eight of these were monitored using laparoscopy and MRI. In addition, to investigate appropriate screening parameters and endometriosis-associated biological parameters in monkeys, we retrospectively examined general laboratory parameters that correlate to the menstrual cycle and disease status.Main Results and the Role Of Chance: The combination of CA125 serum levels (this was a useful marker for chocolate cysts), palpation of the abdomen, and fecal abnormalities was the most efficient screening method for diagnosing monkeys with endometriosis. Each animal could be diagnosed and assigned a disease stage by laparoscopy. While monitoring the disease stage by laparoscopy and/or MRI, disease status in individual monkeys was mainly stable or was progressive for 2-7 months. The detection rate by screening was low (15/614) but age-specific analysis suggests that screening would be more efficient if a colony for an endometriosis model is maintained with 11-20-year olds. As an endometriosis-associated biological parameter, the decrease in food consumption that coincided with menstruation was selected and correlated well (R2 value = 0.8239) with disease status (according to a modified adhesion revised American Fertility Society score).Large Scale Data: N/A.Limitations, Reasons For Caution: Peritoneal fluid was not analyzed because a smaller amount is produced in cynomolgus monkeys than in baboons. Although clinical endometriosis-associated pain is evaluated in women using a visual analog scale, pain could not be directly evaluated in this non-human primate model.Wider Implications Of the Findings: Although cynomolgus monkeys are relatively small (2-5 kg) primates, laparoscopy and MRI make it possible to evaluate spontaneous endometriosis in these monkeys and to monitor its development over time. Specimens were evaluated histopathologically with haematoxylin and eosin staining, iron staining and immunohistochemistry (CD10, CD31, α-SMA and PGP9.5), and by observing them under a microscope.Main Results and the Role Of Chance: Endometriotic and stromal cells (CD10-positive) with haemorrhage and inflammation were observed. Smooth muscle metaplasia and nerve fibres were also noted in the endometriotic lesions. Abstract: Background: In Japan, the bivalent HPV vaccine was approved in October, 2009 and became available as a non-routine vaccine from December, 2009. While routine vaccinations are free, the cost and responsibility for non-routine vaccinations are left to the individual. In exceptional circumstances regional governments fund non-routine vaccinations. This was the case in Shiki City, Saitama Prefecture, where a high uptake rate for individual (non-school based) HPV vaccination was obtained. Materials: On January 20, 2010, the mayor of Shiki City announced to the media his decision to vaccinate adolescent girls in Shiki City against HPV. A project team for HPV vaccination was set up in the city''s Health Promotion Center. To gain mutual consent for HPV vaccination, senior health professionals, city officials, the head of the board of education, school principals and health-care teachers met several times. The cohort to be vaccinated was 1254 girls aged 12–15 years. Individual notifications were mailed to each girl on April 23, 2010, along with information about the HPV vaccine. Conclusions: As of April 10th, 2011, the uptake rate for girls aged 15 years old was 90.7% for the 1st dose. The vaccine registry is managed by the health care system of the city. The success of the HPV vaccination program and high uptake rates in Shiki City is a good model for the nationwide HPV vaccination program that started in February, 2011. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Asia accounts for more than half of all cases of cervical cancer registered globally and improving prevention is urgently needed. A range of tools and strategies is now available to effectively prevent this disease, including two new prophylactic HPV vaccines approved and recommended for adolescents and young women. However, without communication these tools may have little impact on disease burden. The conferences of the Asia Oceania Research Organisation in Genital Infection and Neoplasia (AOGIN) bring together clinicians and scientists whose work is related to genital infections, particularly HPV, cervical dysplasia and neoplasia, as well as other anogenital cancers, with the aim of improving communication on prevention through human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and screening in Asian countries. The scope of this year''s AOGIN conference was to extend education to include health workers, family doctors, paediatricians, governmental health agencies, and the general public through patients’ testimonials that can reach out to women raising awareness of this silent disease. Community based initiatives and awareness campaigns were also reported, and can empower the people to engage in a dialog with local governments towards prioritization of cancer prevention programs, achieving more for the public than isolated actions. Parents and teachers are encouraged to communicate about these issues within families and schools. Evidence was discussed that males can participate in cervical cancer control as well, and prevention programs involving men should not be neglected as they may reduce genital disease burden in women. Opinion leaders proposed prevention measures to be considered for governmental decisions. While each country develops a locally appropriate policy for cervical cancer control there is a need to revise these programs regularly, as knowledge increases in response to public need, as well as to gather evidence about disease burden and the effectiveness of education and interventions. In conclusion, AOGIN is committed to improve communication with patients, health authorities, professional organizations and opinion leaders towards strengthening cervical cancer prevention in Asia, to achieve a timely steep reduction in this cancer. Abstract: d-Amino acid oxidase (DAO) degrades d-serine, a co-agonist at the NMDA receptor (NMDAR). Hypofunction of the NMDAR has been suggested to contribute to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Intriguingly, DAO has been recently identified as a risk factor for schizophrenia through genetic association studies. A naturally occurring mouse strain (ddY/DAO−) has been identified which lacks DAO activity. We have characterized this strain both behaviorally and biochemically to evaluate DAO as a target for schizophrenia. We have confirmed that this strain lacks DAO activity and shown for the first time it has increased occupancy of the NMDAR glycine site due to elevated extracellular d-serine levels and has enhanced NMDAR function in vivo. Furthermore, the ddY/DAO− strain displays behaviors which suggest that it will be a useful tool for evaluation of the clinical benefit of DAO inhibition in schizophrenia. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Human epithelial ovarian carcinoma is well-known as a sex steroid-dependent neoplasm, but the possible biological significance of progesterone receptor (PR) in this cancer remains controversial. Recently, two isoforms of human PR, PRA and PRB, have been characterized and different functional characteristics have been reported for these two isoforms. We therefore examined immunohistochemistry (107 cases) and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) (16 cases) for PRA, PRB, and oestrogen receptor-a (ER-a). Labeling indices (LI) for PRA and PRB were 2.4 and 43.6, respectively, and the difference was statistically significant. PRB LI, but not PRA LI, as well as performance status, stage, and residual tumour turned out to be independent prognostic factors following multivariate analysis. There was also a significant correlation between ER-a LI and PRB LI (r = 0.595, P < 0.0001), suggestive of a possible interaction between these two receptors. RT-PCR also detected the expression of PR isoform transcripts in the same pattern as was observed with immunohistochemistry. Results of these studies indicate that PRA and PRB both mediate distinct pathways of progesterone action in ovarian carcinoma.
