2. $\mu\to e\gamma$ Decay in the Left-Right Supersymmetric Model

Abstract

We calculate the rate of the decay $\mu \to e\gamma$ and the electric dipole moment of the electron in the left-right supersymmetric model when the breaking of parity occurs at a considerably large scale. The low-energy flavor violation in the model originates either from the nonvanishing remnants of the left-right symmetry in the slepton mass matrix or from the direct flavor changing lepton-slepton-neutralino interaction. The result is found to be large for the masses of the supersymmetric particles not far from the electroweak scale and already accessible at the current experimental accuracy. Abstract

The STU formalism of Peskin and Takeuchi is an elegant method for encoding the measurable effects of new physics which couples to light fermions dominantly through its effects on electroweak boson propagation. However, this formalism cannot handle the case where the scale of new physics is not much larger than the weak scale. In this case three new parameters (V, W and X) are required. We perform a global fit to precision electroweak data for these six parameters. Our results differ from what is found for just STU. Abstract

The seven-item Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale Depression subscale (HADS-D) and the total score of the 14-item HADS (HADS-T) are both used for major depression screening. Compared to the HADS-D, the HADS-T includes anxiety items and requires more time to complete. We compared the screening accuracy of the HADS-D and HADS-T for major depression detection. We conducted an individual participant data meta-analysis and fit bivariate random effects models to assess diagnostic accuracy among participants with both HADS-D and HADS-T scores. We identified optimal cutoffs, estimated sensitivity and specificity with 95% confidence intervals, and compared screening accuracy across paired cutoffs via two-stage and individual-level models. We used a 0.05 equivalence margin to assess equivalency in sensitivity and specificity. 20,700 participants (2,285 major depression cases) from 98 studies were included. Cutoffs of ≥7 for the HADS-D (sensitivity 0.79 [0.75, 0.83], specificity 0.78 [0.75, 0.80]) and ≥15 for the HADS-T (sensitivity 0.79 [0.76, 0.82], specificity 0.81 [0.78, 0.83]) minimized the distance to the top-left corner of the receiver operating characteristic curve. Across all sets of paired cutoffs evaluated, differences of sensitivity between HADS-T and HADS-D ranged from -0.05 to 0.01 (0.00 at paired optimal cutoffs), and differences of specificity were within 0.03 for all cutoffs (0.02-0.03). The pattern was similar among outpatients, although the HADS-T was slightly (not nonequivalently) more specific among inpatients. The accuracy of HADS-T was equivalent to the HADS-D for detecting major depression. In most settings, the shorter HADS-D would be preferred. Abstract

Objective: A new poly(ionic liquid)(PIL), poly(p-vinylbenzyltriphenylphosphine hexafluorophosphate) (P[VBTPP][PF6]), was synthesized by quaternization, anion exchange reaction, and free radical polymerization. Then a series of the PIL were synthesized at different conditions. Methods: The specific heat capacity, glass-transition temperature and melting temperature of the synthesized PILs were measured by differential scanning calorimeter. The thermal conductivities of the PILs were measured by the laser flash analysis method. Results: Results showed that, under optimized synthesis conditions, P[VBTPP][PF6] as the thermal insulator had a high glass-transition temperature of 210.1°C, high melting point of 421.6°C, and a low thermal conductivity of 0.0920 W m-1 K-1 at 40.0°C (it was 0.105 W m-1 K-1 even at 180.0°C). The foamed sample exhibited much low thermal conductivity λ=0.0340 W m-1 K-1 at room temperature, which was comparable to a commercial polyurethane thermal insulating material although the latter had a much lower density. Conclusion: In addition, mixing the P[VBTPP][PF6] sample into polypropylene could obviously increase the Oxygen Index, revealing its efficient flame resistance. Therefore, P[VBTPP][PF6] is a potential thermal insulating material.

Abstract

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 is a global public health crisis. Multiple observations indicate poorer post-infection outcomes for patients with cancer than for the general population. Herein, we highlight the challenges in caring for patients with acute leukaemias and myeloid neoplasms amid the COVID-19 pandemic. We summarise key changes related to service allocation, clinical and supportive care, clinical trial participation, and ethical considerations regarding the use of lifesaving measures for these patients. We recognise that these recommendations might be more applicable to high-income countries and might not be generalisable because of regional differences in health-care infrastructure, individual circumstances, and a complex and highly fluid health-care environment. Despite these limitations, we aim to provide a general framework for the care of patients with acute leukaemias and myeloid neoplasms during the COVID-19 pandemic on the basis of recommendations from international experts.

Abstract

Background Panic disorder (PD), frequently occurring with agoraphobia (AG), and depression are common mental disorders in primary care and associated with considerable individual and societal costs. Early detection and effective treatment of depression and PD/AG are of major importance. Cognitive behavioural exposure exercises have been shown to be effective in reducing anxiety and depressive symptoms. Practice team-based case management can improve clinical outcomes for patients with chronic diseases in primary care. The present study aims at evaluating the effects and cost-effectiveness of a primary care team-based intervention using behavioural therapy elements and case management supported by eHealth components in patients with PD/AG or depression compared to treatment as usual. Methods/design This is a two-arm cluster-randomized, controlled trial (cRCT). General practices represent the units of randomisation. General practitioners recruit adult patients with depression and PD ± AG according to the International Classification of Diseases, version 10 (ICD-10). In the intervention group, patients receive cognitive behaviour therapy-oriented psychoeducation and instructions to self-managed exposure exercises in four manual-based appointments with the general practitioner. A trained health care assistant from the practice team delivers case management and is continuously monitoring symptoms and treatment progress in ten protocol-based telephone contacts with patients. Practice teams and patients are supported by eHealth components. In the control group, patients receive usual care from general practitioners. Outcomes are measured at baseline (T0), at follow-up after 6 months (T1), and at follow-up after 12 months (T2). The primary outcome is the mental health status of patients as measured by the Mental Health Index (MHI-5). Effect sizes of 0.2 standard deviation (SD) are regarded as relevant. Assuming a drop-out rate of 20% of practices and patients each, we aim at recruiting 1844 patients in 148 primary care practices. This corresponds to 12.5 patients on average per primary care practice. Secondary outcomes include depression and anxiety-related clinical parameters and health-economic costs. Discussion If the intervention is more effective than treatment as usual, the three-component (cognitive behaviour therapy, case-management, eHealth) primary care-based intervention for patients suffering from PD/AG or depression could be a valuable low-threshold option that benefits patients and primary care practice teams. This is a nationally representative sample of community-dwelling individuals ≥ 40 years in Germany. Perceived prospects for the future in different life domains (ie, living standard, health and general optimism) were used as outcomes. Physician-diagnosed Parkinson’s disease served as key independent variable . It was adjusted for several covariates.Results: Individuals with Parkinson’s disease had a markedly worse (Cohen’s d=0.65) general optimism compared to individuals without Parkinson’s disease. After adjusting for various factors, these differences disappeared in multiple linear regressions (β=− 0.04, p=0.72). Moreover, multiple ordered logistic regressions showed that individuals with Parkinson’s disease had a worse future self-rated health (OR: 4.10, 95% CI: 1.99– 8.47, p< 0.001) compared to individuals without Parkinson’s disease.Conclusion: Our study first showed that general optimism may be lower among individuals with Parkinson’s disease (bivariate analysis). However, this association disappeared when it was adjusted for health-related factors in regression analysis. In sum, our findings indicate that more general future-related factors did not significantly differ between individuals with and without Parkinson’s disease. Multimorbidity is defined as the co-occurrence of at least two chronic conditions. Sociodemographic, lifestyle-related, and health-related (including health literacy) correlates were included in regression analysis.Results: About 79% of the participants were multimorbid. Logistic regressions showed that the likelihood of multimorbidity significantly increased with living in a private household, having a larger network size, worse self-rated health, higher functional impairment, and more depressive symptoms, whereas the remaining sociodemographic and lifestyle-related factors as well as health literacy were not significantly associated with multimorbidity.Conclusion: A large proportion of participants in very late life is multimorbid. Apart from health-related factors, also two sociodemographic factors (ie, living situation and network size) were associated with multimorbidity among the oldest old. Abstract

Circular magnetic X-ray dichroism (CMXD) technique is a feasible method for examining the magnetic properties of ferromagnetic and rare earth materials. The L2 and L3 edge dichroic spectra of the rare earths provide data on the magnetic behavior of 5d conduction electrons while the dichroic spectra below the L absorption edges display quadrupole properties. CMXD also analyzes and yields data about the 4f-5d exchange contribution to spin dependence of 2p-5d matrix elements.

Abstract

To investigate time-dependent predictors of frailty in old age longitudinally. Population-based prospective cohort study. Elderly individuals were recruited via GP offices at six study centers in Germany. The course of frailty was observed over 1.5 years (follow up wave 4 and follow up wave 5). 1,602 individuals aged 80 years and older (mean age 85.4 years SD 3.2, with mean CSHA CFS 3.5 SD 1.6) at follow up wave 4. Frailty was assessed by using the Canadian Study of Health and Aging Clinical Frailty Scale (CSHA CFS), ranging from 1 (very fit) to 7 (severely frail). Fixed effects regressions revealed that frailty increased significantly with increasing age (=.2) as well as the occurrence of depression (=.5) and dementia (=.8) in the total sample. Changes in marital status and comorbidity did not affect frailty. While the effects of depression and dementia were significant in women, these effects did not achieve statistical significance in men. Our findings highlight the role of aging as well as the occurrence of dementia and depression for frailty. Specifically, in order to delay frailty in old age, developing interventional strategies to prevent depression might be a fruitful approach.

To the best of our knowledge, there is no systematic review that summarizes the evidence on the relationship between religious factors and the utilization of cancer screenings. Therefore, this article aims to list the findings about the influence of religious denominations, the importance of religion in one’s life, and religious practices, such as church attendance on the utilization of cancer screenings. PubMed, PsycInfo and CINAHL were searched using a predefined algorithm in June 2020. We included observational studies that examined the association between religion and cancer screening use and employed appropriate items to quantify these key variables. Study selection, data extraction and quality assessment were performed independently by two reviewers. We detected n=27 studies that fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Hereby, n=16 used data from the United States. Most of the studies that were included in our review found a positive association between religious attendance and cancer screening utilization. There was mixed evidence concerning religious denomination as well as religiosity and use of cancer screenings. The studies suggest that religious factors are related to the utilization of cancer screenings. The findings of this systematic review may be helpful to resolve the underuse of cancer screenings by revealing at-risk-groups.Keywords: spirituality, religiosity, cancer screening, preventive medicine, religious denomination, systematic review

Abstract

In the last decade, a wide range of new modeling approaches has been developed for sustainability impact assessment. They are often based on theoretical concepts on how to cope, process and apply pre-assessments on policy and project instrument-implementation. Experiences show that few models reached immediately a fully operational state ready to provide applied policy advice. Expertise on models and programming skills is often not available. Additionally, the geographical focus plays a crucial role in the success of any assessment approaches. Given the assumption that research should be demand-driven, this paper gives an overview on experiences from several European and international projects with regard to the demand of end users and the supply of research. The determining factors of these framework conditions (e.g. regional conditions towards skills, user demands, project designs, data availability of resources) are analysed, which drive decisions to select components within a "tool box". A decision tree is designed which is based on our experiences which ease an adequate, region and condition-explicit selection of tool-box components tailored for sustainability impact assessments. The paper critically reviews the concepts of the presented tools towards its success factors needed to conclude on adequate participatory stakeholder involvement.

Abstract

International audience; Objective:This study analyzed use of services from psychiatrists and other mental health professionals (psychologists, psychotherapists, counselors, and social workers) in six European countries.Methods:Data were from respondents (N=8,796) to the European Study of the Epidemiology of Mental Disorders (ESEMeD), a cross-sectional survey (2001–2003) of a representative sample of noninstitutionalized adults in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain that was conducted via computer-assisted interviews with the Composite International Diagnostic Interview, version 3.0.Results:Twenty-three percent of respondents reported lifetime use of any professional for mental health problems, and 60% consulted a mental health provider. Among these, 56% used a psychiatrist and 68% used a nonpsychiatrist provider. Factors associated with use of psychiatrists only were being retired or unemployed, having 12 or fewer years of education, living in France or Spain, having a severe disorder, and using psychotropic medication. Factors associated with use of nonpsychiatrist providers only were living in the Netherlands or Germany, never being married, and having an anxiety disorder.Conclusions:The findings suggest that there is no simple model of associations between mental health care system and patterns of service use. System characteristics, such as practitioner-population ratios, levels of practitioner availability, and gatekeeping and reimbursement policies, affect patterns of use of mental health providers. Recent British and Australian plans could be used as models for better allocation of services in some ESEMeD countries. (Psychiatric Services 62:143–151, 2011)

However, preventive examinations such as cancer screenings should not be postponed during a pandemic. Because nationally representative studies describing postponed cancer screenings and identifying its determinants in Germany are lacking, our aim was to close this gap in knowledge.Materials and Methods: We used cross-sectional data from the nationally representative online-survey “COVID-19 Snapshot Monitoring in Germany (COSMO)” (wave 17), which was conducted in July 2020. The analytical sample included 974 individuals (mean age was 45.9 years, SD: 16.5 years; 18 to 74 years). The outcome measure was whether cancer screening had been postponed since March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic (no, attended as planned; yes, postponed).Results: In total, slightly more than 10% of individuals stated to have postponed cancer screenings between March and July 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly women and individuals aged 30 to 49 years. The likelihood of postponed cancer screening was positively associated with higher affect regarding COVID-19 (OR: 1.65, 95% CI: 1.16– 2.35), whereas it was negatively associated with younger age (eg, 18 to 29 years, OR: 0.17, 95% CI: 0.05– 0.64, compared to individuals 30 to 49 years).Conclusion: Study findings showed that one out of ten individuals postponed cancer screenings during the COVID-19 pandemic. We determined two correlates of them (age and affect regarding COVID-19). Abstract

Regular crystalline surface layers (S-layers) are widespread among prokaryotes and probably represent the earliest cell wall structures. S-layer genes have been found in approximately 400 different species of the prokaryotic domains bacteria and archaea. S-layers usually consist of a single (glyco-)protein species with molecular masses ranging from about 40 to 200 kDa that form lattices of oblique, tetragonal, or hexagonal architecture. The primary sequences of hyperthermophilic archaeal species exhibit some characteristic signatures. Further adaptations to their specific environments occur by various post-translational modifications, such as linkage of glycans, lipids, phosphate, and sulfate groups to the protein or by proteolytic processing. Specific domains direct the anchoring of the S-layer to the underlying cell wall components and transport across the cytoplasma membrane. In addition to their presumptive original role as protective coats in archaea and bacteria, they have adapted new functions, e.g., as molecular sieves, attachment sites for extracellular enzymes, and virulence factors.

Abstract

MONA implements an efficient decision procedure for the weak second-order logic WS1S, and has already been applied in many non-trivial problems. Among these, we follow on from the work of Smith and Klarlund on the verification of a sliding-window protocol. This paper extends the scope of MONA to the verification of time-dependent protocols. We present Discrete Timed Automata (DTA) as a suitable formalism to specify and verify such protocols. In this paper our case study will be the specification and verification of a multimedia stream. DTA are as much influenced by IO Automata (syntactically) as they are by Timed Automata (semantically). A composition strategy is given to combine a set of synchronising automata, resulting in a product automaton over which safety properties can be verified. Invariance proofs are then performed inductively on the automaton structure. MONA supports the mechanical verification of invariance proofs.

Abstract

Cells of methanococci are covered by a single layer of protein subunits (S-layer) in hexagonal arrangement, which are directly exposed to the environment and which cannot be stabilized by cellular components. We have isolated S-layer proteins from cells of Methanococcus vanniehi (T-opt. = 37degreesC), Methanococcus thermolithotrophicus (T-opt. = 65degreesC), and Methanococcus jannaschii (T-opt. = 85degreesC). The primary structure of the S-layer proteins was determined by sequencing the corresponding genes. According to the predicted amino acid sequence, the molecular masses of the S-layer proteins of the different methanococci are in a small range between 59,064 and 60,547 Da. Compared with its mesophilic counterparts, it is worth noting that in the Slayer protein of the extreme thermophile Mc. jannaschii the acidic amino acid Asp is predominant, the basic amino acid Lys occurs in higher amounts, and Cys and His are only present in this organism. Despite the differences in the growth optima and the predominance of some amino acids, the comparative total primary structure revealed a relatively high degree of identity (38%-45%) between the methanococci investigated. This observation indicates that the amino acid sequence of the S-layer proteins is significantly conserved from the mesophilic to the extremely thermophilic methanococci.

Abstract

The archaea are recognized as a separate third domain of life together with the bacteria and eucarya. The archaea include the methanogens, extreme halophiles, thermoplasmas, Sulfate reducers and Sulfur metabolizing thermophiles, which thrive in different habitats such as anaerobic niches, salt lakes, and marine hydrothermals systems and continental solfataras. Many of these habitats represent extreme environments in respect to temperature, osmotic pressure and pH-values and remind on the conditions of the early earth. The cell envelope structures were one of the first biochemical characteristics of archaea studied in detail. The most common archaeal cell envelope is composed of a single crystalline protein or glycoprotein Surface layer (S-layer), which is associated with the outside of the cytoplasmic membrane. The S-layers are directly exposed to the extreme environment and can not be stabilized by cellular components. . Therefore, from comparative studies of mesophilic and extremely thermophilic S-layer proteins hints can be obtained about the molecular mechanisms of protein stabilization at high temperatures. First crystallization experiments of surface layer proteins Under microgravity conditions were successful. Here, we report on the biochemical features of selected mesophilic and extremely archaeal S-layer (glyco-) proteins.

Therefore, the aim of the study was to uncover health-related lifestyle behaviors (HLB) and age-related comorbidities which may predict, influence and prevent pain in old age.Patients and methods: In this longitudinal cohort study, data were obtained initially from 3.327 individuals aged 75+ from over 138 general practitioners (GP) during structured clinical interviews in 2003. Nine follow-ups (FU) were assessed until 2017. Available data from 736 individuals scoring in FU3 and FU7 were included in this analysis. Data were assembled in an ambulatory setting at participant’s homes. Associations were tested using a linear regression model (model 1) and ordered logistic regression model (model 2).Results: Statistical analyses revealed increased likelihood to experience pain for participants with comorbidities such as peripheral arterial disease (PAD) (coef. 13.51, P>t = 0.00) or chronic back pain (CBP) (coef. 6.64, P>t = 0.003) or higher body mass index (BMI) (coef. 0.57, P>t = 0.015) and, female gender (coef. 6.00, SE 3.0, t = 2.02, P>t = 0.044). Participants with medium education and former smokers showed significantly lower pain rating (coef. −5.05, P>t = 0.026; coef. −5.27, P>t = 0.026). Suffering from chronic back pain (OR = 2.03), osteoarthritis (OR = 1.49) or depressive symptoms (OR = 1.10) raised the odds to experience impairments in daily living due to pain. Physical activity showed no significant results.Conclusion: Chronic conditions such as PAD, or CBP, female gender and higher BMI may increase the risk of experiencing more pain while successful smoking cessation can lower pain ratings at old age.
