This paper proposes a functionally reconfigurable integrated structure of a Fabry-Perot (FP) antenna and wideband liquid absorber. The partial reflecting surface (PRS) is elaborately tailored to serve as both a component of the FP antenna and the metal ground of the broadband liquid absorber. Then the integrated structure is realized by combining the FP antenna with the liquid absorber. The PRS is composed of patches on the top layer of the substrate and the square loop on the bottom and the microstrip patch antenna is used as a source. The liquid absorber is composed of a 3-D printed container, 45% ethanol layer, and a metal ground. By this design, the structure can serve as the FP antenna when the ethanol is extracted or the liquid absorber when the ethanol is injected. This can be used to switch between detection and stealth mode which can better adapt to the complex electromagnetic environment. The simulation results show that the gain of the antenna reaches to 19.7 dBi and the operating band is 100 MHz when the ethanol is extracted. When the ethanol is injected, the absorption band of the absorber ranges from 4 GHz to 20 GHz and the absorption bandwidth is over 133%. The monostatic RCS reduction bands of the structure with ethanol range from 4 GHz to 20GHz and the average RCS reduction is 28.4 dB. The measured and simulated results agree well.

This work presents a switchable frequency-selective rasorber (SFSR) with two operating modes. Switching from transmission to reflection can be achieved by appropriately adding feeders and PIN diodes based on cascaded two-dimensional lossy and lossless frequency-selective surface (FSS) screens. The proposed SFSR can realize out-of-band absorption. Analysis of the equivalent circuit model (ECM) can be useful for achieving a switchable rasorber. As the state of the PIN diodes changes, the working state of the SFSR can be switched from low-frequency reflection and high-frequency transmission to low-frequency transmission and high-frequency reflection, respectively. In the final-revision simulation of the working band of the SFSR, in the ON state, reflection and transmission peaks of -0.55 dB at 4.06 GHz and -0.52 dB at 5.97 GHz, respectively, are achieved; in the OFF state, the transmission and reflection peaks of -0.31 dB at 4.04GHz and -0.26 dB at 6.01 GHz, respectively, are obtained. A prototype sample is developed and validated. The results are in good agreement with those of the full-wave simulation. The proposed design can be used in intelligent anti-jamming communication.

This paper presents a slot antenna array with a reconfigurable radar cross section (RCS). The antenna system is formed by combining a liquid absorber with a 2*2 slot antenna array. The liquid absorber consists of a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) container, a 45% ethanol layer, and a metal ground,which is attached to the surface of the slot antenna array. The incident wave can be absorbed by the absorber rather than reflected in other directions when the PMMA container is filled with ethanol, which reduces the monostatic and bistatic RCS. Thus the RCS of the antenna can be changed by injecting and extracting ethanol while the antenna's radiation performance in terms of bandwidth, radiation patterns and gain is well sustained. In a complex communication system, this can be used to switch between detection and stealth mode. The mechanism of the absorber is investigated. The simulated results show that the antenna with this absorber has monostatic and bistatic RCS reduction bands from 2.0 GHz to 18.0 GHz, a maximum RCS reduction of 35 dB with an average RCS reduction of 13.28 dB. The antenna's operating band is 100 MHz. Without ethanol, the antenna has a realized gain of 12.1 dBi, and it drops by 2 dB when the lossy ethanol is injected. The measured results agree well with the simulated ones.

In this paper, a switchable 3-D frequency selective rasorber (FSR) with wide absorption bands without lumped components or commercial magnetic absorbers is presented and investigated. The absorption path is constructed by embedding a hybrid liquid microwave absorber (MA) inside a parallel plate waveguide (PPW) to create an extra-wide absorption band. A reflection layer based on water is placed behind the FSR to realize the reconstruction from FSR to a band-notched absorber (BNA) by controlling the presence or absence of water. The liquid-based absorber is firstly analyzed by a multimode dielectric resonant circuit and the fundamental operating principle of the FSR is demonstrated with the help of an equivalent circuit model (ECM). A design example is provided, fabricated, and measured and it exhibits a passband at 5.10 GHz with a transmission bandwidth of 18.5% for less than 3 dB insertion loss and fractional bandwidth of 146.8% with reflectivity less than -10 dB in FSR mode. In BNA mode, it has a minimum return loss of 0.72 dB and a good absorption band from 2.5 to 4.6 GHz and 5.7 to 16.5 GHz. Good agreements among circuit analysis, simulation results, and measurement results are finally obtained. In this paper, a liquid reconfigurable stealth window constructed by metamaterial absorber at microwave band is proposed. The stealth window consists of an anti-reflection glass with indium tin oxide (ITO) as resistive film and a liquid container made of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). Since the materials constituting the window are all transparent, the metamaterials that can be switched through the liquid control system can always maintain high light transmission. The proposal can obtain a transmission passband from 2.3 GHz to 5 GHz with low insertion loss, especially at 2.45 GHz and 5 GHz with the insertion loss of the passband reach 0.51 and 0.99 , by alcohol drainage. It can also reflect electromagnetic waves at 2.45 GHz and absorb them from 4.5 GHz to 10.5 GHz with a strong absorptivity over 90% by alcohol injection, exhibiting the reconfigurable electromagnetic characteristic of switching between transmission state and absorption state. Furthermore, the proposed absorber shows its good transmission/absorption performance under different polarizations and obtains absorptivity over 90% when alcohol injection in an oblique incidence of 50{\deg}. Finally, the prototype window has been fabricated to demonstrate the validity of the proposed structure, which indicates that the proposal presents significant implications for smart stealth systems and WLAN communication that require switching of working states in a complex electromagnetic environment.

A water-based switchable frequency selective rasorber with polarization selectivity using the Great Wall structures is presented in this paper. The proposed structure comprises a container containing horizontal and vertical channels enabling dividable injection of water, and a cross-gap FSS. The novelty of the design lies in its switchability among four different operating states by injecting water or not into the water channels. When the container is empty, the structure acts as a polarization-intensive FSS with a -0.42 dB insertion loss passband at 3.75 GHz. When the horizontal channel is filled with water and there is no water in the vertical channel, this structure can be used as an FSR with single polarization selectivity. The FSR with -10 dB absorption band from 6.8 GHz to 18.8 GHz only allows certain polarized electromagnetic (EM) waves to pass at 3.1 GHz with an insertion loss of -0.78 dB, while another polarized EM wave cannot pass. When the container is full of water, the structure operates as an absorber with a reflection band below the absorption band, where neither of polarization EM waves can transmit. Besides, a reconfigurable water-based FSR automatic control system is built to achieve state switching and temperature constancy of the water within the container. Ultimately, a prototype of the presented design is fabricated, simulated and measured to verify the feasibility. This work has potential application in radome design to realize the out-of-band RCS reduction.

A polarization-independent reconfigurable frequency selective rasorber (FSR)/absorber with low insertion loss based on diodes is proposed in this paper. The presented structure consists of a lossy layer based on square loops and a bandpass frequency-selective surface. These two layers are separated by an air layer. Each layer has an embedded bias network that provides the bias voltage to the diodes through metallic via. This configuration can avoid undesirable effects associated with the additional biasing wire. When the diodes are in off-state, the structure is in FSR mode and exhibits a transmission window at 4.28GHz with only 0.69dB insertion loss (IL) within the absorption bands. While diodes are in on-state and the structure switches to absorber mode, it achieves perfect absorption with absorptivity of over 90% ranging from 2.8 to 5.2 GHz. An equivalent circuit model (ECM) is developed to analyse the physical mechanism of the structure. A prototype of the proposed architecture is fabricated and measured, where reasonable agreements between simulations and measurements are observed, verifying the effectiveness of this design.

In this paper, a low radar cross section (RCS) patch antenna based on the 3-bit metasurface composed of linear polarization conversion elements is designed. At first, 3-bit coding metamaterials are constructed by a sequence of eight coded unit cells, which have a similar cross-polarized reflected amplitude response and gradient reflected phase responses covering 0~2{\pi}, respectively. Equivalent circuit models (ECMs) of these unit cells are created to describe their electrical behavior for the two linear incident polarizations at the same time. Then, a patch antenna is integrated on the 3-bit metasurface, of which the elements are placed with a 2-dimensional linear coding sequence. The metal square ring is set around the patch antenna to protect it from the disturbance of metasurface. Both the simulation and experiment results demonstrate that the designed metasurface can primarily reduce the antenna RCS at a broadband, while the antenna performances are not degraded significantly.

Solar arrays are the primary energy source of the satellite. In this paper, a metamaterial absorber for solar arrays with simultaneous high optical transparency and broadband microwave absorption is presented. By tailoring the reflection response of meta-atoms, 85% absorption performance from 6.8GHz to 18GHz is obtained. In the meantime, by employing transparent substrates, including indium tin oxide (ITO) film and anti-reflection glass, a maximum of 87% light transmittance is achieved. The absorptivity of the proposed metamaterial absorber is simulated and measured experimentally. Light transmittance and the effect of transparent metamaterial absorber on the conversion efficiency of the solar array have also been measured. These results fully demonstrate the reliability of our design for solar arrays, which also meet the requirements of structural strength, atomic oxygen erosion resistance, weight limitation, etc.

An intelligent radome utilizing composite metamaterial structures is presented and investigated in this article, which can realize energy isolation and asymmetric propagation of electromagnetic (EM) wave self-adaptively by controlling states of PIN diodes. The whole structure mainly consists of a broadband polarization-sensitive polarization converter (PC) and an active frequency selective rasorber (AFSR) switching between a transmission mode and absorption mode which is used as an energy-selective surface (ESS). Among them, the function of the PC is to make the EM waves transmit asymmetrically, and the purpose of AFSR is to make the high-power waves be reflected or absorbed, which depends on the polarization type of the wave. Thus, the radome can realize both asymmetric propagations of EM wave and electromagnetic shielding. The equivalent circuit models (ECM) and parametric studies are considered to explain the physical operating mechanism of PC and AFSR. The fabricated structure with 7*7 unit cells is experimentally demonstrated and the measured results agree with simulated results well. Considering the distinctive characteristic of self-actuation, the presented concept has the potential application in electromagnetic stealth and HPEMWs shielding to protect communication devices.

In this paper, we combine the design of band-pass frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) with polarization converters to realize a broadband frequency-selective polarization converter (FSPC) with lowbackward scattering, which consists of the top polarization conversion layer backed by a multi-layer bandpass FSS. It is numerically demonstrated that the 1 dB transmission window can be obtained from 8.5 GHz to 11 GHz with a 25.6% fractional bandwidth (FBW), and the bandwidth of reflection below -10 dB is up to 92% from 5.6 GHz to 15.13 GHz. Moreover, the proposed device can achieve two polarization conversion bands (5.66-6.9 GHz and 12.8-15.2GHz) with the polarization conversion ratio over 90%. Besides, by arranging the proposed structure in a checkerboard-like distribution, the backward scattering energy can be reduced in a wide frequency band ranging from 4 to 16 GHz. Both simulation and experimental results are in good agreements, which demonstrates our design strategy. Compared with the conventional polarization conversion designs, the proposed design presents an extra frequency-selective performance and hence can be applied to various practical situations, for instance, working as radomes to transmit the in-band signals with high-efficiency while keeping low-backward scattering for the out-of-band waves., Comment: 8 pages

In this paper, a novel water-based reconfigurable frequency selective rasorber (FSR) at microwave band is proposed, which has a thermally tunable absorption band above the transmission band. The water-based FSR consists of a bandpass type frequency selective surface (FSS) and a 3D printing container. The water substrate is filled into the sealed space constructed by the above two structures. The numerical simulation results show that the FSR can achieve absorption with high absorptivity from 8.3 to 15.2 GHz, and obtain a transmission band of 5.2 to 7.0 GHz. The minimum insertion loss of the transmission band reaches 0.72 dB at 6.14 GHz. In addition, the FSR has the reconfigurable characteristics of absorbing or reflecting electromagnetic waves by filling with water or not. The proposed water-based FSR shows its good transmission/absorption performance under different polarizations and oblique incident angles. Due to the Debye model of water, the absorption band can be adjusted by water temperature, while the passband remains stable. At last, prototype of the FSR based on water has been fabricated, and the experimental results are presented to demonstrate the validity of the proposed structure.

This paper proposes a flexible broadband linear polarization converter based on metasurface operating at microwave band. In order to achieve bandwidth extension property, long and short metallic arc wires, as well as the metallic disks placed over a ground plane, are combined into the polarizer, which can generate three neighboring resonances. Due to the combination of the first two resonances and optimized size and thickness of the unit cell, the polarization converter can have a weak incident angle dependence. Both simulated and measured results confirm that the average polarization conversion ratio is over 85% from 11.3 to 20.2 GHz within a broad incident angle from 0{\deg} to 45{\deg}. Moreover, the proposed polarization converter based on flexible substrates can be applied for conformal design. The simulation and experiment results demonstrate that our designed polarizer still keeps high polarization conversion efficiency even when it adheres on convex cylindrical surfaces.
