Abstract

A putative virulence-associated DNA methyltransferase (MTase) gene conducted on a novel 22.79-kb pathogenicity island-like element (VPAI) in Vibrio parahaemolyticus is identified. The V. parahaemolyticus MTase gene was shown by PCR to be prevalent (.98%) in pandemic thermostable direct hemolysin gene-positive isolates, which suggests that VPAI might confer unique virulence traits to pandemic strains of V. parahaemolyticus.

Abstract

Collagen X deficient mice were used to investigate the function of collagen X in relation to the formation of abnormalities in bone structures. Immunohistochemistry, morphometry, in situ hybridization and electron microscopy, as well as radiological and mineral density analyses revealed that a deficiency in collagen X leads to abnormal trabecular bone architecture. Collagen deficiency also causes reduction in the thickness of growth plate resting zone and articular cartilage, altered bone content and atypical distribution of matrix components in the growth plate cartilage.
