Mass-energy and angular distributions of fission fragments for the 48Ca+144, 154Sm192, 202Pb, 40Ca+154Sm194Pb reactions have been measured. Fusion suppression and the presence of quasi-fission at energies near and below the Coulomb barrier have been observed for the reactions with the deformed target 154Sm. In the case of the spherical 144Sm target no evidence of quasi-fission has been found.

The CLARA-PRISMA Setup is a powerful tool for spectroscopic studies of neutron-rich nuclei produced in multi-nucleon transfer and deep-inelastic reactions. It combines the large acceptance spectrometer PRISMA with the gamma-ray array CLARA. Currently at LNL is being constructed the heavy-ion detector DANTE, based on Micro-Channel Plates, that will be installed at the CLARA-PRISMA setup. DANTE Will open the possibility of measuring gamma-gamma Doppler-corrected coincidences for the events outside the acceptance Of PRISMA. In this manuscript some results obtained with the CLARA-PRISMA setup will be discussed, in addition to the description and performance of the first prototype for the heavy-ion detector DANTE.

Experimental results on the fusion inhibition effect near the Coulomb barrier due to the onset of the quasi-fission mechanism are presented. The investigation was focused on reactions induced by 48Ca projectiles on different heavy targets and comparing them to reactions induced by light ions such as ^12C and ^16O leading to the same compound nuclei. Cross sections and angular distributions of evaporation residues and fission fragments have been measured.

Measurements of fusion-evaporation cross-sections for the system Ca-48 + Sm-154 have been performed in the sub- and near-barrier energy range. Barrier-passing cross-sections have been obtained by adding recently measured capture-fission cross-sections at the same energies, and the barrier distribution for capture has been extracted. The data have been analyzed within a coupled-channel model, and a large subbarrier cross-section enhancement is observed, due to the ground-state prolate deformation of Sm-154. The Ca-48 + Sm-154 capture cross-sections are compared to existing data on O-16 + W-186 fusion. leading to the same CN. where a few higher-energy points have also been measured. The evaporation residue cross-sections for the two systems above the barrier indicate that complete fusion is inhibited for Ca-48 + Sm-154 by approximate to 40% in that energ, region, with respect to O-16 + W-186.

The nuclear system $^{5}$H was studied using the $^{3}$H($t$,$p$)$^{5}$H transfer reaction at a laboratory energy of 57.7 MeV and small center of mass angles. The energy and angular correlations among the $^{5}$H decay fragments were obtained by complete kinematical reconstruction. A broad structure in the $^{5}$H missing mass spectrum above 2.5 MeV with a typical width of several MeV was identified as a mixture of $3/2^+$ and $5/2^+$ states. Analysis of interference patterns observed in the measured angular correlations disclosed the $1/2^+$ ground state of $^{5}$H concealed in the smooth missing mass spectrum. The deduced values for the resonance energy and width are $E_{\text{g.s.}}\approx 1.8$ MeV and $\Gamma_{\text{g.s.}\approx 1.3$ MeV. The estimated cross sections for population of the ground state and the doublet of excited states at $\theta_{\text{c.m.}}=5^{\circ}-10^{circ}$ are $150\pm 50$ $\mu$b/sr and $4.6\pm 2$ mb/sr, respectively.

Recent experimental data on relatively mass-asymmetric collisions show that fusion hindrance can be explained in terms of the onset of quasi-fission reactions. The influence of mass-asymmetry, shell effects and target deformation on such phenomena is presented and possible implications for super-heavy element production are discussed.

heavy ions ,fission ,excitation functions ,evaporation residues - Abstract
Near-barrier excitation functions have been measured for evaporation-residue production and fission in the 12C+204, 206, 208Pb and 48Ca+168, 170Er systems that lead to the compound nuclei 216, 218, 220Ra*. A pronounced suppression of evaporation-residue production is observed for the more symmetric combinations, 48Ca+168, 170Er. We relate this to the significant quasifission components already observed for these systems.

- Abstract
Mass, energy and folding angle distributions of the fission fragments as well as multiplicities of neutron and gamma-quanta emissions accompanying the fission process were measured for fission of 226Th, 227Pa and 234Pu compound nuclei produced in reactions with 18O and 26Mg projectiles over a wide energy range. Data were analyzed with respect to the presence of fission modes. Asymmetric fission was observed even at very high initial excitation for all the measured systems. The so-called fission mode S1 (caused by the proton shell Z∼50 and neutron shell N∼82 in heavy fragment) was found to be dominant in asymmetric fission of 234Pu. Reactions with not full linear momentum transfer were observed in the folding spectra for all the measured systems. © 2006 American Institute of Physics., SCOPUS: cp.p, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
The interest in the study of the fission process of superheavy nuclei mainly deals with the opportunity to obtain information about the cross-section of the compound nucleus (CN) formation at excitation energies E*≈15-30 MeV. It allows one to estimate the survival probability of the superheavy composite system after evaporation of 1-3 neutrons, i.e. in "cold" or "warm" fusion reactions. However, in order to solve this problem deeper understanding of the coalescence processes between colliding nuclei, the competition between fusion-fission and quasi-fission processes is needed. The characteristics of both processes, their manifestation in the experimental observables and the relative contribution to the capture cross-section in dependence on the excitation energies, reaction entrance channel etc were investigated for a wide range of target-projectile combinations. Results of the experiments devoted to the study of the fusion-fission and quasi-fission processes in the reactions of the formation of the superheavy nuclei with Z = 102-122 are presented. The heavy ions 26Mg, 48Ca, 50Ti, 58Fe and 64Ni were used as projectiles. The choice of the reactions with 48Ca and actinide-targets was inspired by the experiments on the production of the isotopes 283112, 289114 and 283116 in Dubna using the same reactions. The 50Ti, 58Fe and 64Ni projectiles were chosen since the corresponding projectile-target combinations lead to the synthesis of even heavier elements. The experiments were carried out at the U-400 accelerator of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions (JINR, Russia) and the XTU Tandem accelerator of the National Laboratory of Legnaro (LNL, Italy) using the time-of-flight spectrometer of fission fragments CORSET. The role of the shell effects, the influence of the entrance channel asymmetry and the deformations of colliding nuclei on the mechanism of the fusion-fission and the competitive process of quasi-fission are discussed. - Abstract
The nuclear system H5 was studied using the H3(t,p)H5 transfer reaction at a laboratory energy of 57.7 MeV and small center of mass angles. The energy and angular correlations among the H5 decay fragments were obtained by complete kinematical reconstruction. A broad structure in the H5 missing mass spectrum above 2.5 MeV with a typical width of several MeV was identified as a mixture of 3/2+ and 5/2+ states. Analysis of interference patterns observed in the measured angular correlations disclosed the 1/2+ ground state of H5 concealed in the smooth missing mass spectrum. The deduced values for the resonance energy and width are Eg.s. 1.8 MeV and Γg.s. 1.3 MeV. The estimated cross sections for population of the ground state and the doublet of excited states at θc.m.=5°-10° are 150±50 μb/sr and 4.6±2 mb/sr, respectively. © 2005 The American Physical Society., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
The excited states in the 5H system, which was produced in the 3H(t, p)5H reaction with a 58 MeV tritium beam at c.m. angles were investigated. The reconstruction of the energy and angular correlations between the 5H decay fragments was performed by using high statistics data. It was observed that a broad structure in the 5H missing mass spectrum above 2.5 MeV was identified as a mixture of the 3/2+ and 5/2+ states. The results show that the 3/2+ and 5/2+ states are either almost degenerate or the reaction mechanism causes a very specific interference of these states., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
The process of fusion-fission of heavy and superheavy nuclei (SHE) with Z = 82-122 formed in the reactions with 48Ca and 58Fe ions at energies near and below the Coulomb barrier has been studied. The experiments were carried out at the U-400 accelerator of the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions (JINR) and at the XTU Tandem accelerator of the National Laboratory of Legnaro (LNL) using the time-of-flight spectrometer of fission fragments CORSET and the neutron multidetector DEMON. As a result of the experiments, mass and energy distributions (MED) of fission fragments; fission, quasifission, and evaporation residue cross sections; and multiplicities of neutrons and γ-quanta and their dependences on the mechanism of formation and decay of compound systems have been studied. © 2005 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica"., SCOPUS: cp.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
The time scales for nuclear fission have been explored using both pre- and postfission neutrons and GDR gamma rays. Four systems were investigated: 133-MeV 16O + 176Yb and 208Pb and 104-MeV 4He + 188Os and 209Bi. Fission fragments were measured in coincidence with PPACs. The neutrons were detected using eight detectors from the DEMON array, while gamma rays were measured using the US BaF2 array. The pre- and postfission gamma rays were determined using moving source fits parallel and perpendicular to the fission fragment emission directions. The time scales for fission for the neutrons were determined using the neutron clock technique. The gamma-ray data were fitted using a statistical model calculation based on the code CASCADE. The results of the fits from both data types were used to extract nuclear friction coefficients, γ, and fission time scales. The γ values ranged from 7 to 20, while the fission times were (31-105) × 10-21 s. © 2003 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica"., SCOPUS: cp.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
Resonance states of 5H were investigated through the two-neutron transfer reaction t(t, p)5 H. A triton beam at 57.5 MeV and a cryogenic liquid tritium target were used. The 5H missing mass spectrum in triple coincidence, proton + triton + neutron, shows a resonance at 1.8 ± 0.1 MeV above the t + 2n decay threshold. This energy is in good agreement with the result reported in Phys. Rev. Lett. 87 (2001) 092501. The resonance width, Γintr ≤ 0.5 MeV, is surprisingly small and difficult to reconcile with theory predictions. © 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
Nuclear dissipation in capture reactions is investigated using backtracing, a new analysis protocol. Combining analysis procedure with dynamical models, the difficult and long-standing problem of competition and mixing between quasifission and fusion-fission is solved for the first time. The nature of the relevant dissipation is determined as one-body dissipation. At low excitation energy where shell effects are strongly effective, the shape of the mass distribution could be a powerful check of the nature and the magnitude of the dissipation. © 2003 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica"., SCOPUS: cp.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
We have studied mass-energy distributions (MED) of fission fragments using two projectile target combinations, 12C + 204Pb and 48Ca + 168Er, leading to the same compound nucleus 216Ra at the excitation energy E* ∼ 40 MeV. It has been found that the contribution of tine asymmetric mode in the case of the former reaction is 1.5%, and it is 30% in the case of the latter one. We connect such a sharp increase in the yield of asymmetric products in the 48Ca + 168Er reaction with the quasifission process, the MED of which have a clearly expressed shell structure. The characteristics of the fission fragment MED are of such a kind that they can be interpreted by analogy with the low-energy fission of heavy nuclei as a manifestation of an independent mode of nuclear decay which competes with the classical fusion-fission process. © 2003 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica"., SCOPUS: cp.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
We have studied the mass and energy distributions of fission fragments from the two reactions 12C + 204Pb and 48Ca + 168Er that lead to the same compound nucleus 216Ra*. Despite the fact that the excitation energy was around 40 MeV in both cases, the contribution from asymmetric fission in the first reaction is only around 1.5% but is about 30% in the second. This marked increase in the yield of asymmetric products is connected to the quasifission process, in which important shell effects become evident. The mass-energy distributions are interpreted in terms of an independent decay mode competing with the normal fusion-fission process and possibly leading to a significant suppression of the fusion cross section itself., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Near-barrier excitation functions have been measured for evaporation-residue production and fission in the 12C + 204,206,208Pb and 48Ca + 168,170Er systems that lead to the compound nuclei 216,218,220Ra*. A Pronounced suppression of evaporation-residue production is observed for the more symmetric combinations, 48Ca + 168,170Er. We relate this to the significant quasifission components already observed for these systems., SCOPUS: ar.j, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
Results of fission fragment mass-energy distributions of the compound 226Th nucleus formed in the subbarrier fusion reaction 18O+H208Pb at an energy of 18O ions Elab=78 MeV are reported. The reaction has been studied twice using two different accelerators, and both sets of experimental data agree quite well. Performed analysis of the experimental data with the use of a new multicomponent method has shown that alongside the well-known modes, i.e. the symmetric (S) and two asymmetric modes standard-one and standard-two, a high-energy mode standard-three has manifested itself. The last named mode appears due to the influence of the close-to-sphere neutron shell with N≈50 in the light fission fragment group. Theoretical calculations of the prescission shapes of the fissioning nuclei 224,226Th confirm this conclusion., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published
