Research was conducted into the possible health effects of manganese (Mn) exposure in the general population through the consumption of drinking water. This study compares three areas in northwest Greece where low, medium and high concentrations of Mn exist in drinking water. Manganese poisoning resembles Parkinson's disease, and neurological signs and symptoms of Mn exposure range from weakness and fatigue to tremor in limbs and impairment of reflexes. Manganese concentrations were measured from both blood and hair samples obtained from 188 people over 50. Although diet for the three regions was similar, there were differences in degrees of manganese poisoning (and associated neurological symptoms) for the three geographic areas corresponding to the Mn concentrations in drinking water.
