1. Multivariate approach to assess groundwater resources in the multilayer system of Iullemmeden basin in Dosso Region, Southwestern Niger

Abstract

The Iullemmeden basin groundwater resources were assessed in the Dosso Region for the groundwater management. This study applied multivariate statistical analyses and classical tools of hydrogeochemistry to identify the main factors impacting groundwater mineralization. The results indicate the occurrence of acidic to basic fresh groundwaters but with excessive mineralization in some places. Good to excellent drinking groundwaters are largely represented in the system. The categorization of groundwater patterns evolves from (i) mixed types namely Ca/Mg-HCO3, Ca/Mg-Cl, Na-Cl/SO4, Ca-Cl/SO4 and Ca/Mg-Cl/SO4 for the Ct3 particularly; to (ii) chloride types such as NaCl, CaCl and MgCl mostly for Ct1 and Ct2; and (iii) the bicarbonate types precisely Na-HCO3, Ca-HCO3, Mg-HCO3 for Ch. The weathering of silicate minerals and dissolution of carbonate and salts are the major processes in the multilayer system. The increase of EC and salinity in Ct2 could come from the relics of ancient seawater during the last regression. To a lesser extent, fertilizers from agriculture, and livestock farming also contribute to groundwater mineralization and nitrate contamination in the study area. The groundwater assessment of the Iullemmeden sedimentary basin in the Dosso Region revealed the main factors and processes characterizing each aquifer of this system, which can be helpful for better groundwater resource management.

Abstract

The Ordovician of North and West Africa comprises three main transgressive–regressive sequences understood as ‘second-order’ cycles of 10–15 myr duration. Tide- to wave-dominated shallow-marine clastic successions, preserving incidental bryozoan carbonates to the north, include fluvial deposits over the most proximal southern stretches of the platform. The boundary with Cambrian strata remains unclear but the latter are progressively less represented to the south in the undifferentiated ‘Cambro-Ordovician’. To the north, graptolites, brachiopods and trilobites combined with palynomorphs provide a robust biostratigraphic frame. Maximum flooding intervals occurred in the early to middle Tremadocian, middle Darriwilian and middle to late Katian. Two events interfered with an overall long-term transgressive trend. The ‘intra-Arenig’ (late Floian?) tectonic event highlighted palaeohighs coinciding with Paleoproterozoic basements. Gondwanan drainage basins were reorganized, which had an impact on sediment sourcing and distribution of detrital material (e.g. zircons) feeding the pre-Variscan Europe. The second event is the end-Ordovician glaciation. The domain supported the greatest part of the Hirnantian glaciers and may also have preserved pre-Hirnantian glacial archives. It is not until the very latest Ordovician that offshore conditions developed far inland; it is however suspected that this inundation benefited from a transient postglacial isostatic flexure.

But : nous avons initié cette étude dans le but de déterminer les performances des examens d’imagerie dans le diagnostic des urgences abdomino-pelviennes.Patients et méthode : Il s’agit d’une étude prospective descriptive de 6 mois allant du 4 février au 4 Aout 2019, portant sur 110 patients consentants, hospitalisés à l’hôpital de Sikasso ayant bénéficiés un examen d’imagerie pour urgence abdomino-pelvienne.Résultat : Elle a concerné 110 patients consentants présentant une symptomatologie abdomino-pelvienne aiguë. La moyenne d’âge était de 32,47 ans. Le sexe masculin a été le plus représenté soit un sex-ratio de 1,44. L’étiologie évoquée la plus fréquente a été l’appendicite soit 34,5%. Les diagnostics suspectés par les médecins traitants ont été confirmé par l’imagerie dans 60% des cas. Une différence statistiquement significative (p < 10-3), (Odds ratio = 23,778, IC = ([7,097 - 79,668]) pour l’imagerie de produire un diagnostic abdomino-pelvien exact par rapport à la clinique a été retrouvé. La concordance entre le diagnostic clinique et le diagnostic final s’est révélé corrélé à l’examen demandé avec une (p = 0,020). Nos patients reçus pour urgence abdomino-pelvienne ont pour les 3/5ème bénéficié d’un traitement chirurgical.Conclusion : La démarche de la prise en charge des patients en urgence nécessite un examen clinique bien réalisé qui oriente le choix de l’examen d’imagerie et l’imagerie permet de redresser la suspicion clinique. Malgré ces bons résultats des progrès restent à faire en matière de prescription des examens radiologiques concernant surtout les renseignements. But : Etudier l’apport de l’imagerie dans le diagnostic de la tuberculose thoracique au CHU Point G.Méthode: Etude prospective portant sur 80 patients atteints de tuberculose thoracique au CHU Point G, allant d’octobre 2018 à Septembre 2019.Résultats : La tranche d’âge dominante était de 20-39 ans avec des extrêmes de 18 et 85ans.Le sex-ratio était de 2,2 en faveur des hommes.Le contage tuberculeux était retrouvé chez 71,43%. A l’admission, 96,25% de nos patients avaient un état général altéré. La toux était le signe respiratoire le plus fréquent 93,75%.A l’examen clinique le syndrome de condensation a prédominé avec 75,38%.La radiographie standard a révélé une atteinte parenchymateuse dans 76,71%, médiatisnale dans 28,77%, pleurale dans 23,29% et osseuse dans 2,74%.Seulement 15% de nos patients ont pu réaliser la TDM, les lésions parenchymateuses étaient les plus fréquentes dans tous les cas, les lésions pleurales 91,67%, les lésions médiatisnales 58,33% et des lésions pariétales 16,67%. Les lésions pulmonaires séquellaires étaient des calcifications parenchymateuses (41,6%), les fibroses cicatricielles 33,33% et les cavernes dans 25% avec greffe aspergillaire dans 16,66%. La bacilloscopie était positive dans 82,5% des cas. La chimiothérapie antituberculeuse a été utilisée dans tous les cas avec un taux d’évolution radiologique favorable à 82% et une guérison de 70% au bout de 6mois.Conclusion : Il ressort de cette étude que l’imagerie joue un rôle fondamental dans le diagnostic et la prise en charge de la tuberculose. Les manifestations radiologiques de la tuberculose pulmonaire varient en fonction de l’âge du patient, de son statut immunitaire et de ses antécédents de tuberculose. La radiographie standard reste l’examen de première intention malgré ses insuffisances.Dans tous les cas, la confrontation radio-clinique et l’examen bactériologique des crachats à la recherche des BK restent primordial pour la confirmation du diagnostic. Cough was the most common respiratory sign 93.75%. On clinical examination, the condensation syndrome predominated with 75.38%. Standard radiography revealed parenchymal involvement in 76.71%, mediatisnal in 28.77%, pleural in 23.29% and bone in 2.74%. Only 15% of our patients were able to perform CT, parenchymal lesions were the most common in all cases, pleural lesions 91.67%, mediatisnal lesions 58.33% and parietal lesions 16.67%. Parenchymal calcifications (41.6%), cicatricial fibrosis 33.33% and caverns in 25% with aspergillus graft in 16.66%. The bascilloscopy was positive in 82.5% of cases. Tuberculosis chemotherapy was used in all cases with a favorable radiological rate of 82% and a recovery of 70% after 6 months.Conclusion: It emerges from this study that imaging plays a fundamental role in the diagnosis and management of tuberculosis. The radiological manifestations of pulmonary tuberculosis vary depending on the patient's age, immune status and history of tuberculosis. Standard radiography remains the first-line examination despite its shortcomings. In all cases, radioclinical comparison and bacteriological examination of sputum for BK remain essential for confirmation of the diagnosis.

19. Control of inherited accreted lithospheric heterogeneity on the architecture and the low, long-term subsidence rate of intracratonic basins

Abstract

Intracratonic basins tend to subside much longer than the timescale predicted by thermal relaxation of the lithosphere. Many hypotheses have been suggested to explain their longevity, yet few have been tested using quantitative thermo-mechanical numerical models, which capture the dynamic of the lithosphere. Lithospheric-scale geodynamic modelling preserving the tectono-stratigraphic architecture of these basins is challenging because they display only few kilometres of subsidence over 1000 of km during time periods exceeding 250 Myr. Here we present simulations that are designed to examine the relative role of thermal anomaly, tectonics and heterogeneity of the lithosphere on the dynamics of intracratonic basins. Our results demonstrate that initial heterogeneity of accretionary continental lithosphere explains long-term subsidence and the arches-basins architecture of Saharan type intracratonic basins at first order. The simulations show that initially heterogeneous lithospheres inherited from accretion are strong enough to resist local isostatic re-equilibration for very long period of time. Indeed, the lateral density variations store potential gravitational energy that is then slowly dissipated by differential erosion and slow vertical movements. For relatively well-accepted coefficient of erosion of 10−6 m2/s, the subsidence last longer than 250 Myr. Extensional tectonic forcing and thermal anomalies both result in an effective strength drop of the lithosphere, which allows a temporal acceleration of local isostatic re-equilibration. Periodic changes in far field tectonic forcing from extension to compression complicate the tectono-stratigraphic architecture (intra-basin arches, sub-basins) introducing stratigraphic unconformities between different neighbouring basins such as the ones observed in North Africa.

Abstract

The Téfidet trough (eastern Niger) belongs to the Ténéré megasystem set of Cretaceous rifts N130°E to N170°E oriented, corresponding to the direction of the Lake Chad-Hoggar tectonic axis. The study of the relationship between the structure of the trough and alkaline fissural volcanism that developed there from the Oligocene to Plio-Quaternary shows the uniqueness of the Téfidet trough compared to the neighboring contemporary volcanic areas of Hoggar, Cameroon, and southern Aïr. The tectono-magmatic reactivation of the Cretaceous Téfidet trough developed in two steps: – a period contemporaneous with the Tuareg shield bulging (Aïr, Hoggar, Iforas); – a subsequent extension period generally N060°E, which has persisted since the opening of the South Atlantic (upper Jurassic to Plio-Quaternary). The fissural volcanism, due to the reactivation of Pan African and Cretaceous faults evolved concomitantly with the N060°E extension (syn-magmatic micro-fractures with basaltic filling), in several steps, from Oligocene to Plio-Quaternary. This study highlights the existence of periods of quietness and recovery of volcanic activity, for which two assumptions can be made: – no enough absolute datings, – apolyphased extension of the rift. The latter hypothesis seems to be supported by three periods of volcanic quietness, 28-24 m.y., 20-14 m.y. and 8-5 m.y., observed in the northern and the southern Aïr, Gréboun and Todgha, respectively.
