In the present paper, a unique semiconductor doped glass photonic crystal fiber has been designed which is suitable for soliton propagation at sub pico-Joule energy. The fiber promises to yield low and uniform anomalous dispersion profile and very large optical nonlinearities 25211 W^(-1) km^(-1) at telecommunication wavelength, thus facilitating soliton formation at ultralow energy. The observed magnitude of nonlinearity is the highest reported ever till date in AlGaAs doped glass. The soliton dynamics has been investigated taking into account of higher-order dispersions and nonlinearities. Propagating solitons breadth and experience large frequency shift, which decreases with the increase in the initial pulse width and increases with the increase in pulse energy. Temporal width of solitons oscillate, the frequency and amplitude of oscillations increase with the increase in the value of pulse energy., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

This paper presents a three layer index guided lead silicate (SF57) photonic crystal fiber which simultaneously promises to yield large effective optical nonlinear coefficient and low anomalous dispersion that makes it suitable for supercontinuum generation. At an operating wavelength 1550 nm, the typical optimized value of anomalous dispersion and effective nonlinear coefficient turns out to be ~4 ps/km/nm and ~1078 W^(-1) km^(-1), respectively. Through numerical simulation it is realized that the designed fiber promises to exhibit three octave spanning supercontinuum from 900 to 7200 nm by using 50 fs sech optical pulses of 5 kW peak power. Due to the cross-phase modulation and four-wave mixing processes, a long range of red-shifted dispersive wave generated, which assist to achieve such large broadening. In addition, we have investigated the compatibility of supercontinuum generation with input pulse peak power increment and briefly discussed the impact of nonlinear processes on supercontinuum generation., Comment: 10 pages, 16 figures

Mid-infrared spectral broadening is of great scientific and technological interest, which till date is mainly achieved using non-silica glass fibers, primarily made of tellurite, fluoride and chalcogenide glasses. We investigate broadband mid-infrared supercontinuum generation at very low power in semiconductor multiple quantum well (MQW) systems facilitated by electromagnetically induced transparency. 100 femto-seconds pulses of peak power close to a Watt have been launched in the electromagnetically induced transparency window of a 30 period 1.374 {\mu}m long MQW system. Broadband supercontinuum spectra, attributed to self phase modulation and modulation instability, is achievable at the end of the MQW system. The central part of the spectra is dominated by several dips and the far infra-red part of the spectra is more broadened in comparison to the infra-red portion. This paper presents the design of an index guided highly birefringent photonic crystal fiber which promises to yield very large birefringence ~3.33 X 10^(-2) at 1550 nm and ~1.75 X 10^(-2) at 1064 nm as well as large effective nonlinearity ~80 W^(-1)km^(-1). Optical supercontinuum generation in the proposed fiber using a 1064 nm pump source with peak power of 1kW has been also presented. Finite difference time domain method (FDTD) has been employed to examine the optical properties such as fiber birefringence, mode field, V-parameter, walk-off and optical nonlinearity, while the Split-step Fourier method is used to solve the nonlinear Schrodinger equation felicitating the study of supercontinuum generation. Simulation results indicate that horizontal input pulse yields superior continuum in comparison to that of the vertically polarized input. However, the broadening of the continuum is about 1450 nm in case of horizontally polarized input light whereas it is approximately 2350 nm for vertically polarized., Comment: 44 pages, 15 figures

Some selected important properties of photorefractive spatial solitons and their applications have been reviewed in the present paper. Using band transport model, the governing principle of photorefractive nonlinearity has been addressed and nonlinear dynamical equations of spatial solitons owing to this nonlinearity have been discussed. Mechanisms of formation of screening and photovoltaic solitons of three different configurations i.e., bright, dark and grey varieties have been examined. Incoherently coupled vector solitons due to single and two-photon photorefractive phenomena have been highlighted. Modulation instability, which is precursor to soliton formation has been also discused briefly. We have reviewed recent developments of some aspects of optical spatial solitons in photorefractive media. Underlying principles governing the dynamics of photorefractive nonlinearity have been discussed using band transport model. Nonlinear dynamical equations for propagating solitons have been derived considering single as well as two-photon photorefractive processes. Fundamental properties of three types of solitons, particularly, screening, photovoltaic and screening photovoltaic solitons have been considered. For each type of solitons, three different configurations i.e., bright, dark and gray varieties have been considered. Mechanisms of formation of these solitons due to single as well as two-photon photorefractive processes have been considered and their self bending discussed. Vector solitons, particularly, incoherently coupled solitons due to single photon and two-photon photorefractive phenomena have been highlighted. The possibility of generation and propagation of ultraslow bright optical solitons in asymmetric three-coupled quantum well systems is studied in this paper. These bright solitons owe their existence to Kerr and quintic nonlinearities which arise due to a probe pulse and two controlling laser beams. We also demonstrate numerically that these solitons are stable. The modulation instability of a continuous or quasi-continuous wave probe beam has been also investigated and the role of quintic nonlinearity in suppressing this instability addressed., Comment: 35 pages, 5 figures

The evolution of the multipolar structure of the magnetic field of isolated neutron stars is studied assuming the currents to be confined to the crust. Lower orders ($\le 25$) of multipole are seen to evolve in a manner similar to the dipole suggesting little or no evolution of the expected pulse shape. We also study the multifrequency polarization position angle traverse of PSR B0329+54 and find a significant frequency dependence above 2.7 GHz.
