Eighteen C2-C7 NMHCs (nonmethane hydrocarbons) were measured hourly during the Integrated Measurement Program for Aerosol and Oxidant Chemistry in Tokyo (IMPACT) measurement campaigns conducted in central Tokyo during four different periods (summer/autumn of 2003 and winter/summer of 2004). The ambient atmospheric concentrations of NMHCs showed an inverse correlation with wind speed and mixing height and were significantly affected by mesoscale weather conditions. The mixing ratio of isoprene tightly correlated with solar flux and temperature in summer, as it was dominantly emitted by the local vegetation. All the observed NMHCs except isoprene showed high correlation with each other in winter (r2 > 0.5), suggesting concurrent accumulation under stagnant condition and common sources. Emission ratios were calculated on the basis of the correlation with carbon monoxide and ethyne. Compared to the typical winter NMEC composition, during summer there was a significant increase (up to 7 times higher than wintertime) of C4-C5 alkanes from ftiel evaporation; of C2-C3 alkenes, n-hexane and benzene from chemical industry; and of toluene from local manufacturers, reflecting the temperature dependence of these evaporative emissions. In addition to the online measurements in Tokyo, canister sampling at a suburban site (Kisai) followed by multidimensional GC analyses was conducted during the summer campaign in 2004. The atmospheric concentrations of longer-lived compounds (≥ several days) at Kisai showed the buildup under sea breeze circulation. The average ambient, concentration of toluene was 2 times higher than that in central Tokyo, likely because of substantial emissions from local industries as reported in the prefectural statistics. We report the evolution of the mixing state of black carbon (BC) particles in urban plumes measured by an airborne single particle soot photometer. The aircraft observations were conducted over the ocean near the coast of Japan in March 2004. The number fiaction of coated BC particles with a core diameter of 180 mn increased from 0.35 to 0.63 within 12 hours (h), namely 2.3% h-1, after being emitted from the Nagoya urban area in Japan. BC particles with a core diameter of 250 nm increased at the slower rate of 1.0% h-1. The increase in coated BC particles was associated with increases in non-sea salt sulfate and water-soluble organic carbon by a factor of approximately two, indicating that these compounds contributed to the coating on the BC particles. These results give direct evidence that BC particles become internally mixed on a time scale of 12 h in urban plumes. Copyright 2007 by the American Geophysical Union.

Ground-based measurements of aerosols and trace gases were conducted at an urban site in Tokyo (Komaba) and a site 50 km to the north (Kisai) during July-August 2004. An Aerodyne aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) was deployed at each measurement site to investigate the chemical evolution of submicron organic aerosol (OA) in polluted air. The mass concentrations of OA at the Kisai site were systematically higher than those at the Komaba site and were correlated with ozone under southerly conditions. The rate of increase of OA at the Kisai site is investigated using the photochemical age derived from the ratio of alkyl nitrates to their parent hydrocarbons. The OA concentrations in processed air (age of 8-16 h) were 4-5 times larger than those in fresh emissions (age ∼ 0), suggesting that the OA concentrations can be significantly enhanced within ∼0.5 days under conditions of high photochemical activity. In this work, we describe the synthesis of novel electrically and magnetically dual-driven Janus particles for a handwriting-enabled twisting ball display via the microfluidic technique. One hemisphere of the Janus particles contains a charge control agent, which allows the display color to be controlled by applying a voltage and superparamagnetic nanoparticles, allows handwriting by applying a magnetic field to the display. We fabricated a twisting ball display utilizing these Janus particles and tested the electric color control and handwriting using a magnet. As a result, the display was capable of permitting handwriting with a small magnet in addition to conventional color control using an applied voltage (80 V). Handwriting performance was improved by increasing the concentration of superparamagnetic nanoparticles and was determined to be possible even when 80V was applied across the electrodes for 4 wt.% superparamagnetic nanoparticles in one hemisphere. This improvement was impossible when the concentration was reduced to 2 wt.% superparamagnetic nanoparticles. The technology presented in our work can be applied to low-cost, lightweight, highly visible, and energy-saving electronic message boards and large whiteboards because the large-size display can be fabricated easily due to its simple structure. Studying the emission ratios of carbonaceous aerosols (element carbon, EC, and organic carbon, OC) from open biomass burning helps to reduce uncertainties in emission inventories and provides necessary constraints for model simulations. We measured apparent elemental carbon (ECa) and OC concentrations at the summit of Mount Tai (Mt. Tai) during intensive open crop residue burning (OCRB) episodes using a Sunset OCEC analyzer. Equivalent black carbon (BCe) concentrations were determined using a Multiple Angle Absorption Photometer (MAAP). In the fine particle mode, OC and EC showed strong correlations (r > 0.9) with carbon monoxide (CO). Footprint analysis using the FLEXPART WRF model indicated that OCRB in central east China (CEC) had a significant influence on ambient carbonaceous aerosol loadings at the summit of Mt. Tai. ÉECa/ÉCO ratios resulting from OCRB plumes were 14.3±1.0 ngm-3 ppbv-1 at Mt. Tai. This ratio was more than three times those resulting from urban pollution in CEC, demonstrating that significant concentrations of soot particles were released from OCRB. ÉOC/ÉCO ratio from fresh OCRB plumes was found to be 41.9±2.6 ngm-3 ppbv-1 in PM1. The transport time of smoke particles was estimated using the FLEXPART WRF tracer model by releasing inert particles from the ground layer inside geographical regions where large numbers of hotspots were detected by a MODIS satellite sensor. Fitting regressions using the e-folding exponential function indicated that the removal efficiency of OC (normalized to CO) was much larger than that of ECa mass, with mean lifetimes of 27 h (1.1 days) for OC and 105 h (4.3 days) for ECa, respectively. The lifetime of black carbon estimated for the OCRB events in east China was comparably lower than the values normally adopted in the transport models. Short lifetime of organic carbon highlighted the vulnerability of OC to cloud scavenging in the presence of water-soluble organic species from biomass combustion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The impact of open crop residual burning on O3, CO, Black Carbons (BC), and Organic Carbons (OC) concentrations over Central Eastern China (CEC) during the Mount Tai Experiment 2006 (MTX2006) was evaluated using the regional chemical transport model, the Models-3 Community Multiscale Air Quality Modeling System (CMAQ). To investigate these pollutants during the MTX2006 period in June, daily gridded emissions from open crop residual burning were developed based on a bottom-up methodology and using land cover and hotspot information from satellites. This model system which involves daily emissions from open biomass burning, captured monthly-averaged observed concentrations and day-to-day variations in the patterns of O3, CO, BC, and OC with good correlation coefficients between models and observations, ranging from 0.54 to 0.66. These results were significantly improved from those using annual emissions. For monthly-averaged O3, the simulated concentration of 81.5 ppbv was close to the observed concentration (82.5 ppbv). The period of MTX2006 was roughly divided into two parts: 1) polluted days with heavy open crop residual burning in the first half of June; 2) cleaner days with negligible field burning in the latter half of June. Additionally, the first half of June was defined by two high pollution episodes during 5-7 and 12-13 June, and a relatively cleaner episode during 8-10 June between these two high pollution episodes. In the first polluted episode, this model captured high O3, CO, BC, and OC concentrations at the summit of Mount Tai which were affected by open crop residual burning in the south of CEC and northward transport. For this episode, the impacts from open crop residual burning were 12% for O3, 35% for CO, 56% for BC, and 80% for OC over CEC. The daily emissions from open crop residual burning were an essential factor to evaluate the pollutants during the MTX2006. These emissions have a large impact not only on primary pollutants but also on secondly pollutions, such as O3, in the first half of June over northeastern Asia. On the other hand, this model did not capture the second polluted episode and underestimated observed CO and BC. Improvements of both anthropogenic and open burning emissions and CO inflow from model boundary are necessary to improve both anthropogenic and open burning emissions and CO inflow to evaluate the pollutants using this model. We measured the number concentrations of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and the size distributions of CCN/CN (CN: condensation nuclei) ratios at supersaturations (SSs) of 0.097, 0.27, 0.58, and 0.97% at Jeju-Island, Korea during March-April 2005. Measurements of aerosol inorganic ions, water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC), organic carbon (OC), and elemental carbon (EC) in PM2.5 were simultaneously made. The CCN/CN ratios increased with increasing particle diameter, and the diameter at CCN/CN=0.5 was defined as D50. D50 represents the activation dry diameter of atmospheric particles. The average D50 at SS=0.097% and 0.97% was 136 nm and 31 nm, respectively. The temporal variation of D50 at SS=0.097% was correlated with the mass fraction of water-soluble components (inorganic ions + WSOC), indicating that the temporal variation of CCN activity was mainly controlled by changes in the water-soluble components fraction. The critical dry diameter (Dcrit), which is the threshold dry diameter for CCN activation, was calculated from the observed aerosol chemical com positions by Köhler theory for comparison with D50. The D50 at SS=0.097% was correlated (r²=0.48) with calculated Dcrit, although Dcrit were larger than D50 by 20-29% on average. The systematic difference between D50 and Dcrit could be caused by the size dependence of the aerosol chemical compositions or surface tension lowering caused by the mixing of water-soluble organic compounds. This difference corresponds to a 27±14% uncertainty in the CCN number concentration estimated from the observed particle number size distribution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dinophysistoxin 1 (DTX1, 1) and okadaic acid (OA, 2), produced by the dinoflagellates Dinophysis spp. and Prorocentrum spp., are primary diarrhetic shellfish toxins (DSTs), which may cause gastric illness in people consuming such as bivalves. Both compounds convert to dinophysistoxin 3 (DTX3, 3; generic name for 1 and 2 with fatty acids conjugated at 7-OH) in bivalves. The enzyme okadaic acid O-acyl transferase (OOAT) is a membrane protein found in the microsomes of the digestive glands of bivalves. In this study, we established an in vitro enzymatic conversion reaction using 4-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (NBD)-OA (4), an OA derivative conjugated with (R)-(-)-4-nitro-7-(3-aminopyrrolidin-1-yl)-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (NBD-APy) on 1-CO2H, as a substrate. We detected the enzymatically produced 3, NBD-7-O-palmitoyl-OA (NBD-Pal-OA), using high-performance liquid chromatography-fluorescence detection. We conducted ship-based measurements of marine aerosol particles (number concentration, size distribution, black carbon (BC), autofluorescence property, and PM 2.5 composition) and trace gases (ozone (O 3 ) and carbon monoxide (CO)) during a cruise of the R/V Mirai (23 August to 4 October 2016) over the Arctic Ocean, Northwest Pacific Ocean, and Bering Sea. Over the Arctic Ocean at latitudes >70°N, the averaged BC mass concentration was 0.7 ± 1.8 ng/m 3 , confirming the validity of our previously-reported observations (~1 ng/m 3 ) over the same region during September 2014 and September 2015. The observed levels over the Arctic Ocean need to be used as a benchmark when testing the atmospheric transport models over the ocean, while they are substantially lower than those reported at Barrow (Utqiaġvik), a nearby ground-based station. We identified events with elevated BC mass concentrations and CO mixing ratios over the Arctic Ocean and Bering Sea as influenced by biomass burnings, with evidences from elevated levoglucosan levels, mixing states of BC particles, and particle size distributions. With WRF-Chem model simulations, we confirmed Siberian Forest fire plumes traveled over thousands of kilometers and produced substantially high BC and CO levels over the Bering Sea. When biologically interpretation of the data obtained from the single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) analysis is attempted, additional information on the location of the single cells, behavior of the surrounding cells, and the microenvironment they generate, would be very important. We developed an inexpensive, high throughput application while preserving spatial organization, named "semibulk RNA-seq" (sbRNA-seq). We utilized a microfluidic device specifically designed for the experiments to encapsulate both a barcoded bead and a cell aggregate (a semibulk) into a single droplet. Using sbRNA-seq, we firstly analyzed mouse kidney specimens. In the mouse model, we could associate the pathological information with the gene expression information. We validated the results using spatial transcriptome analysis and found them highly consistent. When we applied the sbRNA-seq analysis to the human breast cancer specimens, we identified spatial interactions between a particular population of immune cells and that of cancer-associated fibroblast cells, which were not precisely represented solely by the single-cell analysis. Semibulk analysis may provide a convenient and versatile method, compared to a standard spatial transcriptome sequencing platform, to associate spatial information with transcriptome information., (© 2022. Objectives: The longitudinal trend of dental health inequalities among preschool children has not been described. In this study, we aimed to measure the trajectory of both relative and absolute inequalities in caries treatment among preschool children in Japan., Methods: We used data from the Longitudinal Survey of Babies in the 21st Century (LSB21), which is an ongoing national representative longitudinal study. The target population was families residing in Japan with newborn baby/babies born between 10 January and 17 January or 10 July and 17 July 2001. Data regarding caries treatment history and socioeconomic status (SES) were collected using a self-reported questionnaire. SES was assessed on the basis of the parents' educational attainment. In total, 35 260 children were followed from 2.5 to 5.5 years through annual surveys. To evaluate absolute and relative inequalities, we calculated the slope index of inequality (SII) and relative index of inequality (RII), respectively., Results: The rate of caries treatment at the age of 2.5 years was <10% for all SES groups; this increased to more than 30% at 5.5 years of age. Children with lower SES received more frequent caries treatment, and both absolute and relative social inequalities were statistically significant. SII showed a significant increase throughout the follow-up period, with values of 4.13% (95% confidence interval [CI], 3.16; 5.09) and 15.50% (95% CI, 13.68; 17.32) at 2.5 and 5.5 years of age, respectively. In contrast, RII decreased with an increase in the treatment rate for all groups, with values of 1.83 (95% CI, 1.59; 2.11) and 1.53 (95% CI, 1.46; 1.61) at 2.5 and 5.5 years of age, respectively., Conclusion: Our results suggest that the rate of caries treatment is higher for preschool children with lower SES in Japan, with significant widening of absolute inequalities along with the growth of the children., (© 2017 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Objective: Malocclusion is a highly prevalent condition, affecting 20-60% of adolescents worldwide. Although its treatment is often expensive and unaffordable for disadvantaged individuals, few studies have examined the relationship between malocclusion and socioeconomic status. We investigated the prevalence of malocclusion among Mongolian adolescents and its association with maternal education in a community-based sample in Mongolia., Design: Cross-sectional study., Settings: 2 large secondary schools with different backgrounds in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia., Participants: Complete dental casts of 557 randomly recruited Mongolian schoolchildren aged 11-16 years were evaluated using the Dental Health Component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need to dichotomise orthodontic treatment requirements. Exclusion criteria were the presence of orthodontic treatment history and absence of maternal educational status. Questionnaires were administered to caregivers to assess socioeconomic status. Poisson regression analysis was performed to examine the association between malocclusion and maternal educational status., Results: The prevalence of malocclusion requiring orthodontic treatment among all adolescents was 35.2% (95% CI 31.2 to 39.2). In the unadjusted analysis, the prevalence ratio (PR) for malocclusion was higher (PR=1.46; 95% CI 0.96 to 2.20) among adolescents of mothers with a high educational background than among those of mothers with a low educational background. After adjusting for covariates, the PR remained significantly higher (PR=1.72; 95% CI 1.06 to 2.82) among adolescents of mothers with a high educational background. Other socioeconomic status variables, including family income and the educational level of the father, showed no association with malocclusion., Conclusions: These findings suggest that malocclusion requiring orthodontic treatment in adolescents is more prevalent among children of mothers with high levels of education. Objectives: Headaches are a common problem among adolescents, and malocclusion is a possible risk factor. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between malocclusion and headache among Japanese adolescents aged 12-15 years using a population-based sample., Methods: A total of 938 adolescents (94.7% of the target population in Koshu City) participated. A modified version of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) was used by orthodontists to evaluate occlusal characteristics, and the frequency of headaches (none, rarely, sometimes) was assessed via questionnaire (N = 938). Ordered logistic regression analyses were used to analyze the association between malocclusion and headache., Results: The prevalence of malocclusion diagnosed using the modified version of the IOTN was 44.9%. Multiple ordered logistic regression analyses showed that the odds ratio (OR) of having malocclusion for headache was 1.38 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.06-1.80), after adjustment for demographics, lifestyle, and dental status including orthodontic treatment history and tooth size. Moreover, among occlusal traits, lower crowding was independently associated with headache (OR: 1.64, 95% CI: 1.07-2.51)., Conclusions: We found that malocclusion, especially lower crowding, was associated with headache in a population-based sample of adolescents aged 12-15 years in Japan. Unlabelled: The authors analyze the sensitivities of source regions in East Asia to PM2.5 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of < or = 2.5 microm) concentration at Fukue Island located in the western part of Japan by using a regional chemical transport model with emission sensitivity simulations for the year 2010. The temporal variations in PM2.5 concentration are generally reproduced, but the absolute concentration is underestimated by the model. Chemical composition of PM2.5 in the model is compared with filter sampling data in spring; simulated sulfate, ammonium, and elemental carbon are consistent with observations, but mass concentration of particulate organic matters is underestimated. The relative contribution from each source region shows the seasonal variation, especially in summer. The contribution from central north China (105 degrees E-124 degrees E, 34 degrees N-42 degrees N) accounts for 50-60% of PM2.5 at Fukue Island except in summer; it significantly decreases in summer (18%). Central south China (105 degrees E-123 degrees E, 26 degrees N-34 degrees N) has the relative contribution of 15-30%. The contribution from the Korean Peninsula is estimated at about 10% except in summer. The domestic contribution accounts for about 7% in spring and autumn and increases to 19% in summer. We also estimate the relative contribution to daily average concentration in high PM2.5 days (> 35 microg m(-3)). Central north China has a significant contribution of 60-70% except in summer. The relative contribution from central south China is estimated at 46% in summer and about 30% in the other seasons. The contributions from central north and south China on high PM2.5 days are generally larger than those of their seasonal mean contributions. The domestic contribution is smaller than the seasonal mean value in every season; it is less than 10% even in summer. These model results suggest that foreign anthropogenic sources have a substantial impact on attainment of the atmospheric environmental standard of Japan at Fukue Island., Implications: The contribution from several source regions in East Asia to PM2.5 concentration at Fukue Island, a remote island located in the western part of Japan and close to the Asian continent, is estimated using a three-dimensional chemical transport model. The model results suggest that PM2.5 that is attributed to foreign anthropogenic sources have a larger contribution than that of domestic pollution and have a substantial impact on attainment of the atmospheric environmental standard of Japan at Fukue Island.

Background: Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) pulmonary disease (PD) is often difficult and complicated to diagnose or to discriminate from follicular bronchitis, bronchiectasis, or other conditions associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) lung in the clinical setting., Objective: We investigated whether a serologic test for anti-glycopeptidolipid (GPL) antibody was useful for distinguishing MAC-PD from RA lung in diagnosis., Methods: Serum IgA antibody to MAC-specific GPL core antigen was measured by an enzyme immunoassay. Antibody levels were measured in sera from 14 RA patients with MAC-PD (RA + MAC), 20 RA patients with bronchial or bronchiolar lesions without MAC-PD (RA w/o MAC), 20 RA patients without pulmonary lesions (RA only), and 25 healthy volunteers (HV)., Results: The levels of serum anti-GPL antibodies were higher in the RA + MAC group than in the RA w/o MAC, RA-only, and HV groups (2.87 ± 2.83 vs. 0.50 ± 0.45, 0.31 ± 0.24, and 0.38 ± 0.10 U/ml, respectively; p < 0.001). With the cutoff point in receiver-operating characteristic analysis set at 0.7 U/ml, the serologic test differentiated RA + MAC from RA w/o MAC with a sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 90%., Conclusions: This serologic test for anti-GPL antibody is useful for diagnosing MAC-PD in RA.

Background and Objective: Immunoglobulin G4 (IgG4)-related disease is a multi-organ disorder that can include the lungs. IgG4-related lung disease can present in various forms; the clinical, radiological and pathological features of patients with this disease have been assessed., Methods: Forty-eight patients suspected of having IgG4-related lung disease, with a high serum concentration of IgG4 and abundant IgG4-positive plasma cell infiltration into the intrathoracic organs, were retrospectively evaluated. Their clinical features, chest imaging findings and pathological findings were examined, with final diagnoses made by an open panel conference., Results: Of the 48 patients, 18 with extrathoracic manifestations were diagnosed as having IgG4-related lung disease. Most of these patients were middle-aged to elderly men. IgG4-related lung disease was characterized by high serum concentrations of IgG and IgG4, normal white blood cell count and serum C-reactive protein concentration and a good response to corticosteroids. Common radiological findings included mediastinal lymphadenopathy and thickening of the perilymphatic interstitium, with or without subpleural and/or peribronchovascular consolidation. Pathological examination showed massive lymphoplasmacytic infiltration with fibrosis in and around the lymphatic routes, with distribution well correlated with radiological manifestations., Conclusions: The findings suggest that the intrathoracic manifestations of IgG4-related lung disease develop through lymphatic routes of the lungs and show various clinical characteristics. Because some lymphoproliferative disorders show similar findings, the correlation of clinicoradiological and pathological characteristics is crucial for the diagnosis of IgG4-related lung disease., (© 2013 The Authors.
