A broadband detection method with coherent laser pulses exciting surface plasmons is investigated. The intensity and phase characteristics of the reflected light in Kretschmann configuration are calculated. It is shown that by mixing in-plane and out-of-plain polarization components of the incident light, the measurements of the changes of the refractive index of the adjacent media can be efficiently performed by observing the shift of the steep slope of the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) reflectance curve. We have demonstrated that such sensing can be performed by observing the angular shift of the SPR curve as well as the spectral shift. The developed model can account for an arbitrary number of layers and is used to simulate the response when an additional functionalizing layer adjacent to the gold film is used.

We experimentally demonstrate robust selective excitation and attenuation of atomic Rydberg level populations in sodium vapor (Na I) using intense laser pulses in the strong field limit ($> 10^{12} W/cm^{2}$). The coherent control of the atomic population and related ionization channels is realized for intensities above the over-the-barrier ionization intensity. A qualitative model predicts that this strong field coherent control arises through the manifestation of a Freeman resonance., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

The ionization of xenon atoms subjected to 42fs, 800nm pulses of radiation from a Ti:Sapphire laser was investigated. In our experiments a maximum laser intensity of $\sim2\times 10^{15} \textrm{W}/\textrm{cm}^2$ was used. Xenon ions were measured using a time-of-flight ion mass spectrometer having an entrance slit with dimensions of $12\mu \textrm{m} \times 400\mu \textrm{m}$. The observed yields $\textrm{Xe}^{n+} (n=1-7)$ were partially free of spatial averaging. The ion yields showed sequential and nonsequential multiple ionization and dip structures following saturation. To investigate the dip structures and to perform a comparison between experimental and simulated data, with the goal of clarifying the effects of residual spatial averaging, we derived a hybrid analytical-numerical solution for the integration kernel in restricted focal geometries. We simulated xenon ionization using Ammosov-Delone-Krainov and Perelomov-Popov-Terent'ev theories and obtained agreement with the results of observations. We perform femtosecond frequency comb vernier spectroscopy in the near infrared with a femtosecond Er doped fiber laser, a scanning high-finesse cavity and an InGaAs camera. By utilizing the properties of a frequency comb and a scanning high-finesse cavity such spectroscopy provides broad spectral bandwidth, high spectral resolution, and high detection sensitivity on a short time scale. We achieved an absorption sensitivity of ~8E-8 cm-1Hz-1/2 corresponding to a detection limit of ~70 ppbv for acetylene, with a resolution of ~1.1 GHz in single images taken in 0.5 seconds and covering a frequency range of ~5 THz. These measurements have broad applications for sensing other greenhouse gases in this fingerprint near IR region with a simple apparatus., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

We experimentally studied intense femtosecond pulse filamentation and propagation in water for Gaussian, Laguerre-Gaussian, and Bessel-Gaussian incident beams. These different transverse modes for incident laser pulses were created from an initial Gaussian beam by using a computer generated hologram technique. We found that the length of the filament induced by the Bessel-Gaussian incident beam was longer than that for the other transverse modes under the conditions of the same peak intensity, pulse duration, and the size of the central part of the beam. To better understand the Bessel-Gaussian beam propagation, we performed a more detailed study of the filament length as a function of the number of radial modal lobes. The length increased with the number of lobes, implying that the radial modal lobes serve as an energy reservoir for the filament formed by the central intensity peak.

We present intensity-resolved above threshold ionization (ATI) spectra of xenon using an intensity scanning and deconvolution technique. Experimental data were obtained with laser pulses of 58 fs and central wavelength of 800 nm from a chirped-pulse amplifier. Applying a deconvolution algorithm, we obtained spectra that have higher contrast and are in excellent agreement with characteristic 2 $U_p$ and 10 $U_p$ cutoff energies contrary to that found for raw data. The retrieved electron ionization probability is consistent with the presence of a second electron from double ionization. This recovered ionization probability is confirmed with a calculation based on the PPT tunneling ionization model [Perelomov, Popov, and Terent'ev, Sov. Phys. JETP 23, 924 (1966)]. Thus, the measurements of photoelectron yields and the proposed deconvolution technique allowed retrieval of more accurate spectroscopic information from the ATI spectra and ionization probability features that are usually concealed by volume averaging., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures

We present experimental results on the ionization/dissociation of methane in femtosecond pulses of radiation. Angular and intensity dependent yields of singly and doubly charged species were measured using an imaging mass spectrometer. The measured data shows that all fragments yields exhibit some degree of anisotropy as a result of them being preferably ejected parallel to the polarization direction. Additionally, an anomalous perpendicular fragmentation pattern is found for CH\-(2)\+(2+). We find evidence of multiple dissociation mechanisms including statistical decay, field assisted dissociation and Coulomb explosion., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures

We report on a high-power mid-infrared frequency comb source based on a femtosecond Er:fiber oscillator with a stabilized repetition rate at 250 MHz. The mid-infrared frequency comb is produced through difference frequency generation in a periodically poled MgO-doped lithium niobate crystal. The output power is about 120 mW with a pulse duration of about 80 fs, and spectrum coverage from 2.9 to 3.6 um. The coherence properties of the produced high-power broadband mid-infrared frequency comb are maintained, which was verified by heterodyne measurements. As the first application, the spectrum of a ~200 ppm methane-air mixture in a short 20 cm glass cell at ambient atmospheric pressure and temperature was measured., Comment: 3 pages, 5 figures

We use two femtosecond Erbium-doped fiber lasers with slightly different repetition rates to perform a modern type of Fourier transform spectroscopy without moving parts. The measurements are done in real time, and it takes less than 50 microseconds. We work with somewhat different spectral outputs from two Erbium-doped fiber lasers and employ spectral filtering based on a 2f-2f grating setup to select the common spectral region of interest, thereby increasing the signal-to-noise ratio. The interferogram is taken with a 20 cm long gas cell, containing a mixture of acetylene and air at atmospheric pressure, and is fast-Fourier-transformed to obtain the broadband spectral fingerprint of the gas., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Experimental results from the generation of Raman sidebands using optical vortices are presented. By generating two sets of sidebands originating from different locations in a Raman active crystal, one set containing optical orbital angular momentum and the other serving as a reference, a Young's double slit experiment was simultaneously realized for each sideband. The interference between the two sets of sidebands was used to determine the helicity and topological charge in each order. Topological charges in all orders were found to be discrete and follow selection rules predicted by a cascaded Raman process., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We present experimental results for the ionization of aniline and benzene molecules subjected to intense ultrashort laser pulses. Measured parent molecular ions yields were obtained using a recently developed technique capable of three-dimensional imaging of ion distributions within the focus of a laser beam. By selecting ions originating from the central region of the focus, where the spatial intensity distribution is nearly uniform, volumetric-free intensity-dependent ionization yields were obtained. The measured data revealed a previously unseen resonant-like multiphoton ionization process. Comparison of benzene, aniline and Xe ion yields demonstrate that the observed intensity dependent structures are not due to geometric artifacts in the focus. Finally we attribute the ionization of aniline to a stepwise process going through the pi-sigma^star state which sits 3 photons above the ground state and 2 photons below the continuum., Comment: 18 pages, 1 equation and 3 figures

The transmission of ultrashort (7 fs) broadband laser pulses through periodic gold nano-structures is studied. The distribution of the transmitted light intensity over wavelength and angle shows an efficient coupling of the incident p-polarized light to two counter-propagating surface plasmon (SP) modes. As a result of the mode interaction, the avoided crossing patterns exhibit energy and momentum gaps, which depend on the configuration of the nano-structure and the wavelength. Variations of the widths of the SP resonances and an abrupt change of the mode interaction in the vicinity of the avoided crossing region are observed. These features are explained by the model of two coupled modes and a coupling change due to switching from the high frequency dark mode to the low frequency bright mode for increasing wavelength of the excitation light. We present an analytical inversion technique which can be used to recover ionization probabilities from spatially averaged data in an N-dimensional detection scheme. The solution is given as a power series in intensity. For this reason, we call this technique a multiphoton expansion (MPE). The MPE formalism was verified with an exactly solvable inversion problem in 2D, and probabilities in the postsaturation region, where the intensity-selective scanning approach breaks down, were recovered. In 3D, ionization probabilities of Xe were successfully recovered with MPE from simulated (using the ADK tunneling theory) ion yields. Finally, we tested our approach with intensity-resolved benzene ion yields showing a resonant multiphoton ionization process. By applying MPE to this data (which was artificially averaged) the resonant structure was recovered-suggesting that the resonance in benzene may have been observable in spatially averaged data taken elsewhere., Comment: 19 pages and 3 figures

It has become increasingly evident that fabrication of novel biomaterials through molecular self-assembly is going to play a significant role in material science and possibly the information technology of the future. Tubulin, microtubules (MTs) and the cytoskeleton are dynamic, self-assembling systems and we asked whether their structure and function contain the clues on how to fabricate biomolecular information processing devices. Here we review our neurobiological studies of transgenic Drosophila that strongly suggest the microtubular cytoskeleton is near the 'front lines' of intracellular information manipulation and storage. We also establish that spectroscopic techniques such as refractometry, surface plasmon resonance sensing and dielectric spectroscopy, coupled with molecular dynamic simulations and (quantum) electrodynamic analytical theory are useful tools in the study of the electrodynamic and possible quantum effects in cytoskeletal proteins. Implicit in our driving question is the possibility that if tubulin and MTs can indeed be cast as the basis of a classical or quantum computer, then perhaps nature has already done so and tubulin and MTs already play such a role in living neural and other cells. If quantum mechanics is found to be important in cellular function (through its involvement in proteins) it is natural to ask whether there are indeed quantum effects pertinent to consciousness. We conclude this work by suggesting a number of ways towards experimentally testing this "Quantum Consciousness Idea" (QCI), directly at the protein level., Comment: 66 pages, 22 figures, 1 table. Thin films of the molecular magnet Mn12-acetate, [Mn12 O12(CH3COO)16 (H2O)4] 2CH3COOH 4H2O, have been prepared using a laser ablation technique with a nitrogen laser at low laser energies of 0.8 and 2 mJ. Chemical and magnetic characterizations show that the Mn12-acetate cores remain intact and the films show similar magnetic properties to those of the parent molecular starting material. In addition, the magnetic data exhibit a peak in the magnetization at 27 K indicating the creation of an additional magnetic phase not noted in previous studies of crystalline phases., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, In Press - J. Biosensors based on the principle of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) detection were used to measure biomolecular interactions in sarcomeres and changes of the dielectric constant of tubulin samples with varying concentration. At SPR, photons of laser light efficiently excite surface plasmons propagating along a metal (gold) film. This resonance manifests itself as a sharp minimum in the reflection of the incident laser light and occurs at a characteristic angle. The dependence of the SPR angle on the dielectric permittivity of the sample medium adjacent to the gold film allows the monitoring of molecular interactions at the surface.
