In the framework of perturbative QCD, double inclusive cross sections for high $p_t$ parton production in nucleus-nucleus collisions are computed with multiple rescattering taken into account. The induced long-range correlations between numbers of jets at forward and backward rapidities are found to reach $10\div 20$% for light nuclei at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV/c and to be suppressed for heavy nuclei and LHC energies., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures. 3. Multiplicity and Pt Correlations in AA-interactions at High Energies

The theoretical description of the correlations between observables in two separated rapidity intervals in relativistic nuclear collisions is presented. It is shown, that the event-by-event pt-pt correlation defined as the correlation between event mean values of transverse momenta of all particles emitted in two different rapidity intervals does not decrease to zero with the increase of the number of strings in contrast with two particle pt-pt correlation - the correlation between the transverse momenta of single particles produced in these two rapidity windows. In the idealized case with the homogeneous string distribution in the transverse plane in the framework of the cellular analog of string fusion model (SFM) the asymptotic of pt-pt correlation coefficient is analytically calculated and compared with the results of the Monte-Carlo (MC) calculations fulfilled both in the framework of the original SFM and in the framework of its cellular analog, which enables to control the MC algorithms. In the case with the realistic nucleon distribution density of colliding nuclei the results of the MC calculations of the pt-pt correlation function for minimum bias nuclear collisions at SPS, RHIC and LHC energies are presented and analysed., Comment: 7 pages, LaTeX, 3 figures in PostScript, to be published in the XVIIIth QFTHEP Workshop proceedings

4. Multiplicity and Pt Correlations in Relativistic Nuclear Collisions

The theoretical description of the correlations between observables in two separated rapidity intervals for AA-interactions at high energies is presented. In the case with the realistic nucleon distribution density of colliding nuclei the MC calculations of the long-range correlation functions at different values of impact parameter are done. For n-n and pt-n correlations it is shown that the impact parameter fluctuations at a level of a few fermi, unavoidable in any experiment, significantly change the magnitude of correlation coefficients. 5. Correlations between multiplicities and average transverse momentum in the percolating colour strings approach

Long range correlations multiplicity-multiplicity, $p_T^2$-multiplicity and $p^2 - p^2_T$ are studied in the percolating colour string picture under different assumptions of the dynamics of string interaction. It is found that the strength of these correlations is rather insensitive to these assumptions nor to the geometry of formed fused string clusters. Both multiplicity-multiplicity and $p_T^2$-multiplicity correlations are found to scale and depend only on the string density. The $p_T^2$-multiplicity correlations, which are absent in the independent string picture, are found to be of the order of 10% for central heavy ion collisions and can serve as a clear signature of string fusion. In contrast the $p^2_T - p^2_T$ correlations turned out to be inversely proportional to the number of strings and so very small for relaistic collisions., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures

6. Cellular Approach to Long-Range $p_t$ and Multiplicity Correlations in the String Fusion Model

The long-range $p_t$ and multiplicity($n$) correlations in high-energy nuclear collisions are studied in the framework of a simple cellular analog of the string fusion model. Two cases with local and global string fusion is considered. The $p_t$--$n$ and $n$--$n$ correlation functions and correlation coefficients are calculated analytically in some asymptotic cases using suggested Gauss approximation. It's shown that at large string density the $p_t$--$n$ and $n$--$n$ correlation coefficients are connected and the scaling takes place. The behavior of the correlations at small string density is also studied. A simple cellular model for the description of the long-range multiplicity and $p_t$ correlations in high-energy nuclear collisions originating from the string fusion model is proposed. Three versions of the model: without fusion, with local and with global string fusion are formulated. A Gauss approximation which enables explicit analytical calculations of the correlation functions in some asymptotic cases in the framework of the model is developed. The assumptions of the model and the validity of a Gauss approximation are checked up in the simplest (no fusion) case when the explicit solution of the model can be found. The role of a size of cells is analysed. This document presents the revised data taking schedule of NA61 with ion beams. The revision takes into account limitations due to the new LHC schedule as well as final results concerning the physics performance with secondary ion beams. It is proposed to take data with primary Ar and Xe beams in 2012 and 2014, respectively, and to test and use for physics a secondary B beam from primary Pb beam fragmentation in 2010, 2011 and 2013.

This document presents the proposal for secondary ion beams and the updated data taking schedule of the NA61 Collaboration. The modification of the original NA61 plans is necessary in order to reach compatibility between the current I-LHC and NA61 schedules. It assumes delivery of primary proton beam in 2009-2012 and of primary lead beam in 2011-2013. The primary lead beam will be fragmented into a secondary beam of lighter ions. The modified H2 beam line will serve as a fragment separator to produce the light ion species for NA61 data taking. The expected physics performance of the NA61 experiment with secondary ion beams will be sufficient to reach the primary NA61 physics goals.

Status of the new experimental program to study hadron production in hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN SPS will be presented. In particular, a detailed physics motivation and experimental strategy will be given for the part of the program related to the physics of strongly interacting matter: search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter, study properties of the onset of deconfinement, and high p_T measurements in p+p and p+A interactions. Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
ALICE is a general-purpose heavy-ion experiment designed to study the physics of strongly interacting matter and the quark-gluon plasma in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the LHC. It currently involves more than 900 physicists and senior engineers, from both the nuclear and high-energy physics sectors, from over 90 institutions in about 30 countries. The ALICE detector is designed to cope with the highest particle multiplicities above those anticipated for Pb-Pb collisions (dN(ch)/dy up to 8000) and it will be operational at the start-up of the LHC. In addition to heavy systems, the ALICE Collaboration will study collisions of lower-mass ions, which are a means of varying the energy density, and protons (both pp and pA), which primarily provide reference data for the nucleus-nucleus collisions. In addition, the pp data will allow for a number of genuine pp physics studies. The detailed design of the different detector systems has been laid down in a number of Technical Design Reports issued between mid-1998 and the end of 2004. The experiment is currently under construction and will be ready for data taking with both proton and heavy-ion beams at the start-up of the LHC. Since the comprehensive information on detector and physics performance was last published in the ALICE Technical Proposal in 1996, the detector, as well as simulation, reconstruction and analysis software have undergone significant development. The Physics Performance Report (PPR) provides an updated and comprehensive summary of the performance of the various ALICE subsystems, including updates to the Technical Design Reports, as appropriate. The PPR is divided into two volumes. Volume I, published in 2004 (CERN/LHCC 2003-049, ALICE Collaboration 2004 J. Phys. G: Nucl. Part. Phys. 30 1517-1763), contains in four chapters a short theoretical overview and an extensive reference list concerning the physics topics of interest to ALICE, the experimental conditions at the LHC, a short summary and update of the subsystem designs, and a description of the offline framework and Monte Carlo event generators. The present volume, Volume II, contains the majority of the information relevant to the physics performance in proton-proton, proton-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus collisions. Following an introductory overview, Chapter 5 describes the combined detector performance and the event reconstruction procedures, based on detailed simulations of the individual subsystems. Chapter 6 describes the analysis and physics reach for a representative sample of physics observables, from global event characteristics to hard processes.
