The fusion energy research field presents many intricate challenges that require resolution. Many diagnostic systems employed in experiments are approaching the limits of current technology. Implementing efficient measurements requires using an appropriate set of tools to facilitate the optimal utilization of hardware. Fusion energy measurements must provide low latency processing with the capacity for future improvements and the ability to handle complex data flows efficiently. The presented work addresses these requirements and describes the implementation of a high-performance, low-latency software platform with convenient development for soft X-ray (SXR) plasma impurities emission tracing—the Asynchronous Complex Computation Platform (AC2P). This article presents the architectural design, implementation details, and performance and latency measurements based on the raw data acquired from the WEST tokamak and laboratory tests. AC2P provides the tools to develop low-latency, multi-core, multi-device complex data flow graph scale-up solutions for measuring impurities in hot plasmas. The system has been designed to operate online during experiments, calculate the energy distribution, position and occurrence time of SXR photons, monitor the data stream's quality and archive any abnormalities for subsequent offline verification and algorithm improvement. Nuclear reactors are very complex units in which many physical processes occur simultaneously. Efficient heat removal from the reactor core is the most important of these processes. Heat is removed from the reactor core via heat conduction, radiation, and convection. Thus, convective heat transfer and its conditions play a crucial role in the operation and safety of nuclear reactors. Convective heat transfer in nuclear reactors is a very complex process, which is dependent on many conditions and is usually described by different correlations which combine together the most important criteria numbers, such as the Nusselt, Reynolds, and Prandtl numbers. The applicability of different correlations is limited by the conditions of heat transfer in nuclear reactors. The selection of the proper correlation is very important from the reactor design accuracy and safety points of view. The objective of this novel review is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the models and correlations which may be applied for convective heat transfer description and modeling in various types of nuclear reactors. The authors review the most important research papers related to convective heat transfer correlations which were obtained by experimental or numerical research and applied calculations and heat transfer modeling in nuclear reactors. Special focus is placed on pressurized water reactors (PWRs), boiling water reactors (BWRs), CANDU reactors, small modular reactors (SMRs), and molten salt reactors (MSRs). For each type of studied reactor, the correlations are grouped and presented in tables with their application ranges and limitations. The review results give insights into the main research directions related to convective heat transfer in nuclear reactors and set a compendium of the correlations that can be applied by engineers and scientists focused on heat transfer in nuclear reactors. Prospective research directions are also identified and suggested to address the ongoing challenges in the heat transfer modeling of present and next-generation nuclear reactors. Efficiency is a key parameter used to assess the quality of operation of power generation systems and devices applied for converting one type of energy to the other. Although, in the end, an investment project is mainly evaluated by economic aspect. Furthermore, many researchers have been investigating the possible types of energy conversion systems and devices applied for power generation and utilizing different types of working fluids. This paper presents the inside into transcritical carbon dioxide (CO2) cycle and the gradients of its efficiency. Transcritical CO2 cycle (TCO2C) here refers to a CO2-based thermal power generation cycle absorbing heat from a heat source (ideally with constant pressure) till the supercritical state is reached. It is followed by an expansion to a sub-critical superheated or even two-phase (wet) state. As alternatives, trilateral flash cycle (TFC) and organic Rankine cycle (ORC) utilizing CO2 are also introduced in this paper. The calculation in this study is computed based on MATLAB integrated with thermophysical properties like CoolProp and REFPROP, the mathematical models of the system are built and calculated with the same heat sink temperature of 224.41 K, and the heat source temperature is varied between 274.41 K and 500 K. At a certain temperature, the obtained result shows that the efficiency of the TCO2C is lower than the efficiency of ORC. Another result proves that the quality of working fluid at the end of the expansion process significantly influences the efficiency of the cycle.

Thermal energy storage (TES) became one of the main research topics in modern power engineering. The design of TES devices and systems depend on their application. Different thermal energy storage materials (e.g., solids, liquids, or phase change materials) can be applied in TES devices. The selection of the thermal energy storage material depends mainly on the thermal power and operating temperature range of the TES device. These devices and systems are applied in different energy conversion systems, including solar power plants or combined heat and power (CHP) stations. The application of TES devices is also considered in the case of other industries, such as metallurgy. The possible application of TES devices is particularly promising in the case of organic Rankine cycle (ORC) systems. These systems are often utilizing floating heat sources such as solar energy, waste heat, etc. TES device can be therefore applied as the evaporator of the ORC system in order to stabilize these fluctuations. In this paper, the possible thermal energy storage materials used in TES devices applied in ORCs are discussed. Moreover, the modelling results are reported related to assessment parameters which can be applied to size the TES device for ORC system utilizing different low-boiling working fluids. The thermal properties of working fluids are taken from CoolProp. The function of heat capacity of different TES materials is also provided and the calculation is computed by employing MATLAB. The result shows that based on the simulation, the gradient of the natural characteristic of TES with working fluids (ζ(Tb)) tends to decrease. The presented result in this paper gives a new point of view which can be used by scientists and engineers during the design and implementation of TES evaporators dedicated to ORC power systems.

Some of the heat sources (such as e.g. waste or renewable), are characterized by floating thermal and output characteristics. Thus, their application for powering vapor power plants, such as ORCs, which should utilize the heat sources having steady thermal and output characteristics is difficult. The floating heat source characteristics may potentially be improved using the heat storage devices providing the thermal energy accumulation at stable output and temperature level. Heat storage device can be adopted as a e.g. steady-level heat source for ORC system. In this paper different applications of the heat storage devices in ORCs were proposed and the results of experiments on powering the ORC system via heat storage device are presented. The results showed that adopting the heat storage devices for powering the ORC systems is possible and it is a promising way of utilizing the waste and renewable heat sources featuring floating characteristics.

The topic of frost formation on the heat exchanger surface has been gaining interest since the late 1940s. Scientists and industrial engineers from many scientific and R&D units around the world have been trying to understand the nature of frosting and implement solutions to prevent such an unwanted phenomenon from having a significant impact on the performance of heat exchangers (such as a decrease in heat transfer efficiency, mechanical damage, and condensation risk). The aim of this article is to summarize the present state of knowledge dedicated to frost formation types and morphology, review, and discuss the most recent studies relevant to the challenge of frost formation, focusing on the evaporator of the domestic refrigerator. The different types of domestic refrigerators are summarized, as are the different types of evaporators inside them. Common methods of testing frost formation phenomena on the evaporator are revisited in this article, and the analysis of the most recent mathematical models is presented as well. In this paper, the results of numerical investigations on heat transfer in a multi-vane expander (MVE) are reported. MVEs are very interesting for various technological applications because of their advantages (such as, for example, low gas flow capacity and a low expansion ratio). According to a literature study, the heat exchange mechanisms occurring in these machines have not yet undergone in-depth analysis. As a result, there have been very few experimental or modeling results connected to these unquestionably significant processes from both a scientific and practical perspective. Despite the fact that several analytical models have been developed for these phenomena, there is no numerical model dedicated to an MVE. This model was developed by the authors and presented in this paper together with modeling results. Numerical simulations were executed in the ANSYS CFX and focused on defining the expander heat transfer coefficients under various flow circumstances. The results showed inside heat transfer processes in MVEs and, moreover, it was discovered that, in the gap between the vane and the cylinder, there are changes in the fluid's velocity profile. Multi-vane expanders are positive displacement volumetric machines which are nowadays considered for application in micro-power domestic ORC systems as promising alternative to micro turbines and other volumetric expanders. The multi-vane expander features very simple design, low gas flow capacity, low expansion ratios, an advantageous ratio of the power output to the external dimensions and are insensitive to the negative influence of the gas-liquid mixture expansion. Moreover, the multi-vane expander can be easily hermetically sealed, which is one of the key issues in the ORC system design. A literature review indicates that issues concerning the application of multi-vane expanders in such systems, especially related to operating of multi-vane expander with different low-boiling working fluids, are innovative, not fully scientifically described and have the potential for practical implementation. In this paper the results of numerical investigations on multi-vane expander operating conditions are presented. The analyses were performed on three-dimensional numerical model of the expander in ANSYS CFX software. The numerical model of the expander was validated using the data obtained from the experiment carried out on a lab test-stand. Then a series of computational analysis were performed using expanders' numerical model in order to determine its operating conditions under various flow conditions of different working fluids.

Fluidised desiccant cooling is reported in the literature as an efficient way to provide cooling for air-conditioning purposes. The performance of this technology can be described by electric and thermal Coefficients of Performance (COP) and Specific Cooling Power (SCP). In this paper comprehensive theoretical study was carried out in order to assess the effect of operating conditions such as: superficial air velocity, desiccant particle diameter, bed switching time and desiccant filling height on the performance of fluidised desiccant cooler (FDC). It was concluded that FDC should be filled with as small as possible desiccant particles featuring diameters and should not be operated with shorter switching times than optimum. Moreover in order to efficiently run such systems superficial air velocities during adsorption and desorption should be similar. At last substantial effect of desiccant filling height on performance of FDC was presented.
