Data in many application domains provide a valuable source for analysis and data-driven decision support. On the other hand, legislative restrictions are provided, especially on personal data and patients’ data in the medical domain. In order to maximize the use of data for decision purposes and comply with legislation, sensitive data needs to be properly anonymized or synthetized. This article contributes to the area of medical records synthesis. We first introduce this topic and present it in a broader context, as well as in terms of methods used and metrics for their evaluation. Based on the related work analysis, we selected CTGAN neural network model for data synthesis and experimentally validated it on three different medical datasets. The results were evaluated both quantitatively by means of selected metrics as well as qualitatively by means of proper visualization techniques. The results showed that in most cases, the synthesized dataset is a very good approximation of the original one, with similar prediction performance.

Aspergillus section Aspergillus contains economically important, xerophilic fungi that are widely distributed in nature and the human environment and are known for their ability to grow on substrates with low water activity. The taxa were revised based on sequence data from four loci, PCR fingerprinting, micro- and macromorphology, and physiology. The number of taxa was reduced to 17 species, all of which can be distinguished with sequence data from either the caM or RPB2 locus. The original description of A. proliferans was supplemented by a description of its teleomorph. This species seems to be relatively common and often has been confused with A. glaucus. In addition, green sporulating isolates of A. niveoglaucus isolated from food and several other substrates are indistinguishable in phenotype from A. glaucus. A dichotomous key based on ascospore size and ornamentation and the ability to grow at specific combinations of temperature and water activity is provided for identification of species. In response to recent changes in the botanical code, we transferred the Eurotium species to Aspergillus and selected one name for each species.

During a study of endophytic and saprotrophic fungi in the sapwood and phloem of broadleaf trees (Salix alba, Quercus robur, Ulmus laevis, Alnus glutinosa, Betula pendula) fungi belonging to an anamorphic coelomycetous genus not attributable to a described taxon were detected and isolated in pure culture. The new genus, Liberomyces, with two species, L. saliciphilus and L. macrosporus, is described. Both species have subglobose conidiomata containing holoblastic sympodial conidiogenous cells. The conidiomata dehisce irregularly or by ostiole and secrete a slimy suspension of conidia. The conidia are hyaline, narrowly allantoid with a typically curved distal end. In L. macrosporus simultaneous production of synanamorph with thin filamentous conidia was observed occasionally. The genus has no known teleomorph. Related sequences in the public databases belong to endophytes of angiosperms. Phylogenetic analysis revealed a position close to the Xylariales (Sordariomycetes), but family and order affiliation remained unclear.

Widespread morbidity and mortality of Juglans nigra has occurred in the western USA over the past decade. Tree mortality is the result of aggressive feeding by the walnut twig beetle (Pityophthorus juglandis) and subsequent canker development around beetle galleries caused by a filamentous ascomycete in genus Geosmithia (Ascomycota: Hypocreales). Thirty-seven Geosmithia strains collected from J. californica, J. hindsii, J. major and J. nigra in seven USA states (AZ, CA, CO, ID, OR, UT, WA) were compared with morphological and molecular methods (ITS rDNA sequences). Strains had common characteristics including yellowish conidia en masse, growth at 37 C and absence of growth on Czapek-Dox agar and belonged to a single species described here as G. morbida. Whereas Geosmithia are common saprobes associated with bark beetles attacking hardwoods and conifers worldwide, G. morbida is the first species documented as a plant pathogen.

Lilac coloured species of Geosmithia lavendula produce a mixture of polyhydroxylated anthraquinones under condition of submerged fermentation. Three pigments had been isolated and identified earlier as a 1,3,6,8-tetrahydroxyanthraquinone (compound 7), rhodolamprometrin (1-acetyl 2,4,5,7-tetrahydroxyanthraquinone; compound 5), and 1-acetyl 2,4,5,7,8-penthahydroxyanthraquinone (compound 4). A new HPLC method was developed for the separation of three known and ten new anthraquinone pigments. In addition, five new pigments were determined by FTMS as coeluting impurities. The analyses were performed on a reversed phase column using gradient elution with a mobile phase system consisting of phosphate buffer (50 mM; pH=2.0) and acetonitrile. The structure evaluation was based namely on FTMS and UV-VIS spectrometry. The developed procedure was used for the determination of individual anthraquinones in fermentation broth of G. lavendula after 14 days of cultivation. The extractable amount and LOQ (both in μg ml(-1)) for the two main pigments from G. lavendula are 50.02 and 2.15 for compound 4, and 63.77 and 2.75, for compound 5, respectively., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier B.V. The ophiostomatoid fungi associated with cerambycid beetles Tetropium spp. (their symbiotic vectors) colonizing Norway spruce in Poland (six species collected) were isolated. The virulence of representative isolates was evaluated through inoculations using 2-year-old Norway spruce seedlings. A total of 1325 isolates (Ophiostoma piceae, O. tetropii, O. minus, Grosmannia piceiperda, G. cucullata, and five other less frequent taxa) were obtained. Tetropium castaneum and T. fuscum were vectors of similar spectra of ophiostomatoid fungi although some differences in fungal frequency between these Tetropium spp. were found. Among the fungal associates of the Tetropium spp. collected only G. piceiperda was pathogenic, which suggests that it can play a role in the death of spruce trees following attack by Tetropium spp.

Ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytinae) are associated with strictly entomochoric and mutualistic fungi. We studied the mycobiota associated with Scolytodes unipunctatus, ambrosia beetles that infest Cecropia trees in Central America. Isolates were characterized using morphology and rDNA sequences (ITS region, LSU, and SSU rDNA). Four species are described here: Raffaelea scolytodis sp. nov. (Ophiostomatales), Gondwanamyces scolytodis sp. nov., Custingophora cecropiae sp. nov., and Graphium sp. (Microascales). The genus Custingophora is emended to include Knoxdaviesia anamorphs of Gondwanamyces based on uniformity of DNA sequences and phenotype.

Geosmithia fungi are little known symbionts of bark beetles. Secondary metabolites of lilac colored species G. lavendula and other nine Geosmithia species were investigated in order to elucidate their possible role in the interactions of the fungi with environment. Hydroxylated anthraquinones (yellow, orange, and red pigments), were found to be the most abundant compounds produced into the medium during the submerged cultivation. Three main compounds were identified as 1,3,6,8-tetrahydroxyanthraquinone (1), rhodolamprometrin (1-acetyl-2,4,5,7-tetrahydroxyanthraquinone; 2), and 1-acetyl-2,4,5,7,8-pentahydroxyanthraquinone (3). Compounds 2 and 3 (representing the majority of produced metabolites) inhibited the growth of G+-bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis with minimum inhibitory concentration of 64-512 microg/mL. Anti-inflammatory activity detected as inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 was found only for compound 3 at 1 and 10 microg/mL. Compound 2 interfered with the morphology, compound 3 with cell-cycle dynamics of adherent mammalian cell lines.

Geosmithia spp. (Ascomycota: Hypocreales) are little-studied, dry-spored fungi that occur in galleries built by many phloeophagous bark beetles. This study mapped the distribution and environmental preferences of Geosmithia species occurring in galleries of temperate European bark beetles. One hundred seven host tree samples of 16 tree species infested with 23 subcortical insect species were collected from across Europe during the years 1997-2005. Over 600 Geosmithia isolates from the beetles were sorted into 17 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) based on their phenotype similarity and phylogeny of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2). The OTUs represent six known species and eight undescribed taxa. Ninety-two samples infested with subcortical insects were characterized by the presence/absence of OTUs and the similarity among the samples was evaluated. Geographically distant populations of the same beetle species host relatively uniform Geosmithia communities across large geographic areas (ranging from southern Bulgaria to the Czech Republic). This suggests effective dispersal of Geosmithia spp. by bark beetles. Clustering of similar samples in ordination analysis is correlated predominantly with the isolation source (bark beetles and their respective feeding plant), but not with their geographical origin. The composition of the Geosmithia OTU community of each bark beetle species depends on the degree of isolation of the species' niches. Thus, Geosmithia communities associated with regularly co-occurring bark beetle species are highly similar. The similarity decreases with decreasing frequency of beetle species' co-occurrence, a pattern resembling that of entomochoric ophiostomatoid fungi. These findings suggest that: 1) communities of Geosmithia spp. are vector-specific; 2) at least in some cases, the association between Geosmithia OTUs and bark beetles may have been very stable and symbioses are likely to be a fundamental factor in the speciation of Geosmithia fungi; and 3) that even nonsticky spores of Geosmithia are suitable for maintaining an insect-fungus association, contrary to previous hypotheses.

The structure of unique colorless needle crystals growing from the surface mycelium of the basidiomycete Quambalaria cyanescens and identified as (+)-globulol was followed by mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, and polarimetry. The mechanism of (+)-globulol fragmentation is proposed based on collision induced dissociation mass spectrometry. X-Ray analysis revealed that crystal packing is governed by hydrogen bond O-H.....O connecting the molecules into an infinite helix along a 3-fold screw axis propagating along the longest dimension of the needle crystal (c-axis of the unit cell). The X-ray diffraction data correspond well with the proposed structure determined by mass spectrometry.

Geosmithia spp. (Ascomycota: Hypocreales) are dry-spored fungi that occur in galleries built by many phloeophagous bark beetles. This study mapped the diversity, host spectrum and area of distribution of Geosmithia spp. occurring in galleries of bark beetle species with a Mediterranean distribution. Eighty-six wood samples of 19 tree species infested by 18 subcortical insect species were collected from across the Mediterranean Basin during the years 2003-2006. Geosmithia spp. were found in 82 samples of angiosperms and two host trees from the family Juniperaceae infested by 14 bark beetles and the bostrichid Scobicia pustulata, suggesting that the association of Geosmithia and phloeophagous bark beetles is very widespread in the Mediterranean. Geosmithia isolates were sorted into 13 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) based on their phenotype similarity and phylogeny of their ITS regions of rDNA (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2). The OTUs represent five known species (G. flava, G. langdonii, G. lavendula, G. pallida, G. putterillii) and seven undescribed taxa. Most of the bark beetles were associated with on average 1-2.5 OTUs per sample. G. lavendula, considered very uncommon in nature, was found as a common associate of bark beetles. Six out of 13 OTUs were found to be distributed in the Mediterranean but not in neighbouring areas of temperate Europe suggesting that Geosmithia spp. have a geographically limited distribution, probably due to their dependency on the geographically limited area of their vectors. The proportion of generalists and specialists among Geosmithia spp. was smaller compared with data from temperate Europe. A possible explanation is the effective dispersal of Geosmithia by polyphagous bostrichids across the niches defined by mutually exclusive bark beetles.

The identity of symbiotic fungi associated with the Xiphydria spp. wood wasps was investigated using DNA analysis. The fungi were isolated from the mycangia of adult females of X. camelus, X. prolongata and X. longicollis reared from colonized logs of Alnus glutinosa, Salix alba and Quercus robur, respectively. Sequences of rDNA and beta-tubulin were obtained. Phylogenetic analysis based on the NJ method showed that the isolates from X. camelus clustered with Daldinia decipiens, whereas those of X. prolongata belonged to Entonaema cinnabarina. In X. longicollis, both symbiotic fungi (D. decipiens and E. cinnabarina) have been found. Morphological characteristics of the anamorphs are presented. In cultures of D. decipiens, sympodial holoblastic, as well as annelidic, conidiation was observed. So far, fruit bodies of D. decipiens have only been recorded from Betula spp. whereas the host spectrum of its wasp vectors covers predominantly oaks and alders. Fruiting bodies of E. cinnabarina do not occur in Central Europe. This is the first report of Entonaema as a symbiotic fungus of siricid wood wasps.

All hypocrealean species of the genus Geosmithia are anamorphic fungi with connections to bark beetles. G. fassatiae, G. langdonii and G. obscura are described as new sympatric species associated with Scolytus carpini, S. intricatus and S. rugulosus in Central Europe. The species represent a complex of three sister taxa with affinities to G. flava that may be distinguished by differences in morphology, unique RAPD patterns and by sequences of ITS region rDNA. Intraspecific variability and habitat specificity of new species is described and discussed. The high morphological, genetic and ecological uniformity suggest that these Geosmithia spp. are recently derived. A key to all accepted hypocrealean species of the genus is provided.

Phytopathogenic effect of Geosmithia pallida, G. langdonii, Ophiostoma grandicarpum, O. querci, two isolates of O. piceae, and two isolates of Fusarium solani was compared using plant growth test (stem and root length of garden cress plants seeded on mycelium-covered potato carrot agar); Ophiostoma spp. and F. solani were isolated from oak, Geosmithia spp. from galleries of Scolytus intricatus on beech. All fungi inhibited more the root elongation than that of stems. F. solani led to plant collapse after briefly stimulating the growth of stem and in one case also root. G. langdonii inhibited stem and root growth to 20% and led to plant collapse. G. pallida inhibited root growth to 25% whereas stem growth was almost unimpaired. Ophiostoma spp. reduced stem growth to approximately 60-80% and root growth to 25-60%. O. piceae and O. querci caused plant collapse after 15-20 d.

Geosmithia putterillii is an anamorphic fungus with connections to bark beetles. Genetic variability of 89 isolates traditionally grouped in G. putterillii and G. lavendula isolated from different geographical regions from subcorticolous insects and from other unspecific substrata was assessed using RAPD, sequencing of the ITS region (ITS1-5.8SrDNA-ITS2) and morphological characters. RAPD analysis revealed eight distinct groups. One group was represented by G. lavendula type strain and showed no relations to any other isolate. Five RAPD-types with similar ITS sequences and phenotype were related to the ex-type strain of Penicillium pallidum (generally given as a synonym of G. putterillii). Because of unique phylogenetic position and a phenotype markedly different from G. putterillii, the new combination G. pallida is made here. For another group of isolates formerly identified as G. putterillii the new species G. fiava is described based on a characteristic RAPD-type, a unique ITS sequences and a different phenotype. These newly recognized species are stable in culture and with worldwide distribution.

Types of asexual sporulation in 17 Claviceps species and the closely related Corallocytostroma ornicopreoides were revised in relation to the phylogeny of clavicipitaceous fungi. We observed: (1) enteroblastic conidiation from branched phialidic conidiophores typical of the genus (anamorph Sphacelia) in all species including Corallocytostroma; (2) widespread and often sequential formation of terminal holoblastic secondary conidia on tapering hyphae arising from sphacelial macroconidia: and (3) in addition to sphacelial conidiation, sympodial holoblastic conidiation of the Ephelis-type in cultures of C. zizaniae and in both the culture and sphacelial tissue of C. citrina. Secondary conidiation was not found in C. purpurea, C. citrina and C. sorghicola. During sphacelial fructification, most species produced macroconidia and microconidia. Only macroconidia formed in planta underwent secondary conidiation whereas microconidia did not germinate at all. In C. phalaridis, the formation of holoblastic 2-3 celled appendaged conidia was observed, similar to that of Aciculosporium and Neoclaviceps. In dendrograms based on ITS1-5.8S rDNA-ITS2 sequences, genera and species with appendaged conidia grouped on a highly supported clade with ancestral Corallocytostroma. The clade was placed inside a group of tropical species of Claviceps, without any relationship to Balansiae.

The response of the cenosis composition of soil saprotrophic microfungi able to utilize the fulvic fraction of soil organic matter to increased concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide, plant species cover quality and different levels of nitrogen fertilization was determined under field conditions in a free-air carbon dioxide enrichment experiment. Twenty-nine species of microfungi were isolated from the tested soil. The effects of CO2 enrichment and plant species cover were not significant. Nitrogen fertilization was identified as the only significant factor inducing changes in the abundance of soil microorganisms. This was reflected in a relatively low value of quantitative Sørensen similarity index on comparing fertilized and unfertilized treatments and in 2-way ANOVA of total CFU counts. Some differences were observed in species diversity between the two variants of all treatments. No association between microfungi and the factors under study was found by using the Monte Carlo Permutation test in redundancy analysis.

Phaeoacremonium is a recently described genus (Crous et al. 1996) associated with decline diseases of woody hosts and with human infections. During a study of surface mycobiota of the oak bark beetles, the hyphomycetous microfungus Phaeoacremonium rubrigenum was isolated from larvae of Scolytus intricatus (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) and their galleries on Quercus robur and also from an adult of Leperisinus fraxini found under the bark of Fraxinus excelsior. The species determination was confirmed by rDNA (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) comparison. P. rubrigenum was recorded for the first time in Czechia. The records on oak are considered to be the first ones in the world. A description of morphological features and figures of the fungus are given. Representative strains are maintained in the Culture Collection of Fungi (CCF), Faculty of Science, Charles University (Prague, Czechia).

Treatment for chronic osteomyelitis with musculocutaneous and muscular flaps is a highly effective modern method. It is effective even in such unfavourable localizations as the calcaneus. The scope of use provided by muscles in the plantar region is wide enough to permit the treatment of foci in the heel bone of diverse localizations. The range of possibilities includes use of m. abductor digiti quinti. A muscular or musculocutaneous flap elevated from the muscle is well suited for the treatment of defects on the external side of the heel. The group consisted of six patients with osteomyelitis of seven heel bones operated on as described above at the author's clinics between 1983 and 1987. One patient had both heel bones affected. The mean age was 47 years, ranging from 23 to 62 years. All of the patients showed clinical and X-ray signs of healing of the soft tissue defects and full remission of inflammatory complication. Control check-ups were made at 2-5 years postoperatively with an average postoperative period of 38 months. None of the patients developed any chronic osteomyelitis relapse at any point during that period.
