Background: The global nursing shortages exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated a drastic reorganization in nursing practices. Work routines, the composition of teams and subsequently mundane nursing practices were all altered to sustain the accessibility and quality of care. These dramatic changes demanded a reshaping of the nurses’ work environment. The aim of this study was to explore how nurses reshaped their work environment in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A descriptive study comprising 26 semi-structured interviews conducted in a large Dutch teaching hospital between June and September 2020. Participants were nurses (including intensive care unit nurses), outpatient clinic assistants, nurse managers, and management (including one member of the Nurse Practice Council). The interviews were analysed with open, axial, and selective coding. Results: We identified five themes: 1) the Nursing Staff Deployment Plan created new micro-teams with complementary roles to meet the care needs of COVID-19 infected patients; 2) nurse-led adaptations effectively managed the increased workload, thereby ensuring the quality of care; 3) continuous professional development ensured adequate competence levels for all roles; 4) interprofessional collaboration resulted in experienced solidarity, a positive atmosphere, and increased autonomy for nurses; and, 5) supportive managers reduced nurses’ stress and improved work conditions. Conclusions: This study showed that nurses positively reshaped their work environment during the COVID-19 pandemic. They contributed to innovative solutions in an environment of equal interprofessional collaboration, which led to greater respect for their knowledge and competencies, enhanced their autonomy and improved management support.

Some nurses are responding rebelliously to the changing healthcare landscape by challenging the status quo and deviating from suboptimal practices, professional norms, and organizational rules. While some view rebel nurse leadership as challenging traditional structures to improve patient care, others see it as disruptive and harmful. These diverging opinions create dilemmas for nurses and nurse managers in daily practice. To understand the context, dilemmas, and interactions in rebel nurse leadership, we conducted a multiple case study in two Dutch hospitals. We delved into the mundane practices to expand the concept of leadership-as-practice. By shadowing rebel nurse practices, we identified three typical leadership practices which present the most common “lived” experiences and dilemmas of nurses and nurse managers. Overall, we noticed that deviating acts were more often quick fixes rather than sustainable changes. Our research points to what is needed to change the status quo in a sustainable manner. To change unworkable practices, nurses need to share their experienced dilemmas with their managers. In addition, nurse managers must build relationships with other nurses, value different perspectives, and support experimenting to promote collective learning.

Aims To understand how nurses perceived the contributions of the Dutch Excellent Care Program, the development of nurses’ leadership, and their ability to positively influence their work environment. Background Research shows that the nursing work environment influences job satisfaction, retention, and quality of care. Many countries have created programs such as the Excellent Care Program to improve nurses’ leadership and facilitate a positive work environment. Methods A descriptive qualitative study based on 17 semistructured group interviews (participants N = 52) and directed content analysis using thematic coding. Results. Four program processes contribute to leadership development: (1) nurses taking responsibility for their knowledge and skills development; (2) strengthening organizational structures to improve nursing governance; (3) challenging the status quo with quality-enhancing projects; and (4) enhancing awareness of the supportive role of the nurse manager. Conclusions The program supported nurses’ leadership development for a positive work environment. The interrelatedness of the four processes enhanced the nurses’ ability to solve day-to-day problems and challenge the status quo that influenced working practices. Implications for Nursing Management The findings support making improvements to healthcare organizational strategies to encourage nurses to show leadership in their work environment.

The relation among the various causal factors of obesity is not well understood, and there remains a lack of viable data to advance integrated, systems models of its etiology. The collection of big data has begun to allow the exploration of causal associations between behavior, built environment, and obesity-relevant health outcomes. Here, the traditional epidemiologic and emerging big data approaches used in obesity research are compared, describing the research questions, needs, and outcomes of 3 broad research domains: eating behavior, social food environments, and the built environment. Taking tangible steps at the intersection of these domains, the recent European Union project “BigO: Big data against childhood obesity” used a mobile health tool to link objective measurements of health, physical activity, and the built environment. BigO provided learning on the limitations of big data, such as privacy concerns, study sampling, and the balancing of epidemiologic domain expertise with the required technical expertise. Adopting big data approaches will facilitate the exploitation of data concerning obesity-relevant behaviors of a greater variety, which are also processed at speed, facilitated by mobile-based data collection and monitoring systems, citizen science, and artificial intelligence. These approaches will allow the field to expand from causal inference to more complex, systems-level predictive models, stimulating ambitious and effective policy interventions. © 2022 American Society for Nutrition.

Voor het project Bio-Iso worden in twee zeecontainers de eigenschappen van biobased isolatiematerialen getest. De containers staan in Innovatiepunt KAAP, een ruimte in Vlissingen waar ondernemers, onderzoekers en het onderwijs samen nieuwe producten en innovaties kunnen ontwikkelen, testen en demonstreren.

Kurk… we kennen het materiaal allemaal wel in relatie met een fles wijn of als prikbord. Maar zou je er ook je huis mee isoleren? Pro Suber® zet zich in om kurk als bouwmateriaal meer op de kaart te zetten in Nederland. Er zitten namelijk heel wat voordelen aan dit hernieuwbare en volledig biobased materiaal. We spreken met Arnoud Hanenburg, eigenaar van Pro Suber® over kurk en de samenwerking met CoE BBE.

Een belangrijk, in het oog springend onderdeel van het project FACET is de bouw van het Biobased Beleven-huis. Het staat op het terrein van Rothuizen Architecten en Adviseurs in Middelburg en is een blikvanger op het zogenaamde siloterrein aan de Kleverkerkseweg. Het terrein staat aan de vooravond van een herstructurering. Bij deze werkzaamheden blijven de oude loodsen en gebouwen zoveel mogelijk behouden en worden bij verbouwingen circulaire bouwmaterialen gebruikt.

Een goed onderzoeksproject staat nooit op zichzelf. Zo ook het nieuwe project Totally Nuts. Basis voor dit project zijn namelijk de resultaten uit de eerdere onderzoeken in ‘Cashing Cashew’ en ‘BioADD’. De komende vier jaar gaan de projectpartners toewerken naar het gezamenlijke doel: Duurzame en economisch haalbare biobased epoxy thermoharders en composieten ontwikkelen uit cashewnootschil residu.

“Zelfs al gebruik je een volledige biobased grondstof als basis voor een papieren of kunststof verpakking, door verschillende additieven in de verpakking zelf of door een bedrukking slaag je er dan alsnog niet in om echt van een 100% biobased verpakking te kunnen spreken. In het CurCol project zoeken we naar mogelijkheden om uit kurkumine afkomstige pigmenten te verwerken in verpakkingen en inkten, om dat stukje van de biobased puzzel te kunnen leggen. En dat niet alleen; we onderzoeken ook de teelt van het gewas en beoordelen de hele productieketen op milieu-impact en economische haalbaarheid.”

“Bijdragen aan een versnelde realisatie van de energie- en materiaaltransitie met de UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) als ons kompas.” Dat zijn de woorden van Jappe de Best, lector van het Lectoraat Biobased Resources & Energy. Naast de werkzaamheden voor het lectoraat geeft hij les bij de internationale opleiding Milieukunde en is hij coördinator van het semesterprogramma Biobased Technology & Business Development. Samen met Jappe geven we je alle ins and outs van het lectoraat.

Het lectoraat Marine Biobased Specialties (MBBS) wil mariene biomassa en de stoffen die je hieruit kunt verkrijgen duurzaam toepassen in de transitie naar een bio-circulaire economie. Tanja Moerdijk en haar collega-onderzoeker Dylan de Jong zijn daar vrijwel elke dag mee bezig.

Gesnipperd door de pastasaus of in ringen gesneden tussen een broodje hamburger. We consumeren nogal wat uien. Daarmee creëren we ook een grote reststroom van uienschillen. Ogenschijnlijk nutteloos en hooguit nog goed genoeg om te vergisten of te verwerken in veevoer of compost, maar niets is minder waar! Wim Gaakeer van het lectoraat Biobased Building Blocks & Products legt uit hoe uienschillen, maar ook vele andere agrarische reststromen, nog een bron van waardevolle bestanddelen kunnen zijn.

Als je boerderij op een steenworp afstand ligt van de Oosterschelde en zeewier net zo’n voedzaam bestandsdeel van krachtvoer blijkt te zijn als soja, waarom zou je dan krachtvoer met soja uit Zuid-Amerika importeren? Dat is de kernvraag van het onderzoek Circulaire Zeewierkoeien, dat een subsidie heeft ontvangen van SIA KIEM 2020. De vraag klinkt misschien eenvoudig, maar de uitvoering is moeilijker.

Er is veel onderzoek gedaan naar biologisch afbreekbare polymeren. Kunststoffen worden echter meestal niet alleen gemaakt van polymeren, maar er worden ook andere materialen (additieven) bijgemengd. Deze additieven zijn essentieel voor de productie en prestaties van kunststoffen. Biobased alternatieven voor deze additieven ontbreken, maar zijn dringend nodig. In het BioADD project hebben we onderzocht hoe we nieuwe duurzame additieven met betere eigenschappen kunnen ontwikkelen en demonstreren, specifiek voor tuin- en landbouwtoepassingen.

In het project Circular Biobased Construction Industry (CBCI) kijken de projectpartners hoe je in de bouw grondstoffen efficiënter kunt gebruiken. De bouwsector is nog altijd een grootverbruiker en veroorzaakt veel CO2-uitstoot. Binnen CBCI draait het niet alleen om materialen die tijdens de bouw worden gebruikt, maar tijdens de gehele levenscyclus van het gebouw. In het project staan twee praktijkcases centraal. Eentje vindt plaats bij GGZ-instelling Emergis in Kloetinge.

PHA; een natuurlijke plastic vervanger met alle voordelen van traditionele plastics, maar zonder de nadelen van milieuvervuiling. De vraag naar deze volledig biologisch afbreekbare bioplastic variant groeit wereldwijd. Het lectoraat Biobased Resources & Energy (BRE) doet onderzoek naar de productie van PHA en het bedrijf Paques Biomaterials is een waardevolle partner in dit proces. We spraken met João Sousa, hoofd technologieontwikkeling bij Paques Biomaterials, over de samenwerking met Centre of Expertise Biobased Economy.

Bedrijven zijn op zoek naar kosteneffectieve processen om waardevolle componenten te scheiden en te zuiveren uit natte reststromen van bioprocessen, zoals vergisting en bioraffinage. Voorbeelden zijn voedselingrediënten (zoals geur- en smaakstoffen), biochemicaliën (zoals vetzuren of eiwitten) en biobrandstoffen. Met membraantechnologie kan dat! Bruno Bastos Sales, docent-onderzoeker bij het lectoraat Biobased Resources & Energy, weet er alles van.

Fresh Layer is een onderzoek naar de ontwikkeling van duurzaam verpakkingsmateriaal dat eetbaar is. Het lectoraat Marine Biobases Specialties van HZ University of Applied Sciences is penvoerder van het SIA Kiem GoChem-project. hoe we nieuwe duurzame additieven met betere eigenschappen kunnen ontwikkelen en demonstreren, specifiek voor tuin- en landbouwtoepassingen.

“Ja. De technische eigenschappen van biopolymeren en additieven benaderen die van fossiel-gebaseerde kunststoffen die nu gebruikt worden. En nee. Daarmee stappen we niet in een handomdraai over van bijvoorbeeld fossiel gebaseerde plastics naar biobased plastics. We moeten af van die zoektocht naar een 1 op 1 vervanger van wat we gewend zijn en gaan redeneren en ontwerpen vanuit de prima eigenschappen die we nu al aan biobased materialen kunnen geven.” Aldus klinkt het uit de mond van Han van Kasteren, lector van het lectoraat Biobased Building Blocks & Products (BBBP). We praten met hem over waar zijn onderzoekers aan werken en wat dat betekent voor ons allemaal.

Background The optimal treatment sequence for patients with rectal cancer and synchronous liver metastases remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of short-course pelvic radiotherapy (5 x 5 Gy) followed by systemic therapy and local treatment of all tumour sites in patients with potentially curable stage IV rectal cancer in daily practice.Methods This was a retrospective study performed in eight tertiary referral centres in the Netherlands. Patients aged 18 years or above with rectal cancer and potentially resectable liver +/- extrahepatic metastases, treated between 2010 and 2015, were eligible. Main outcomes included full completion of treatment schedule, symptom control and survival.Results In total, 169 patients were included with a median follow-up of 49 center dot 5 (95 pr cent c.i. 43 center dot 6 to 55 center dot 6) months. The completion rate for the entire treatment schedule was 65 center dot 7 per cent. Three-year progression-free survival and overall survival (OS) rates were 24 center dot 2 (95 per cent c.i. 16 center dot 6 to 31 center dot 6) and 48 center dot 8 (40 center dot 4 to 57 center dot 2) per cent respectively. Median OS of patients who responded well and completed the treatment schedule was 51 center dot 5 months, compared with 15 center dot 1 months for patients who did not complete the treatment (P <0 center dot 001). Adequate symptom control of the primary tumour was achieved in 87 center dot 0 per cent of all patients.Conclusion Multimodal treatment is palliative in most patients, and associated with good survival rates in those able to complete the schedule.

To be able to provide adaptive instruction, teachers need to be able to accurately estimate students' reading comprehension. However, they tend to experience difficulties doing so. Eye tracking can uncover these reading processes by visualizing what a student looked at, in what order, and for how long, in a gaze display. The question is, however, whether teachers could interpret such displays. We, therefore, examined how teachers interpret gaze displays and perceived their potential use in education to foster tailored support for reading comprehension. Sixty teachers in secondary education were presented with three static gaze displays of students performing a reading comprehension task. Teachers were asked to report how they interpreted these gaze displays and what they considered to be the promises and pitfalls of gaze displays for education. Teachers interpreted in particular reading strategies in the gaze displays quite well, and also interpreted the displays as reflecting other concepts, such as motivation and concentration. Results showed that teachers' interpretations of the gaze displays were generally consistent across teachers and that teachers discriminated well between displays of different strategies. Teachers were generally positive about potential applications in educational practice. This study provides first insights into how teachers experience the utility of gaze displays as an innovative tool to support reading instruction, which is timely as rapid technological developments already enable eye tracking through webcams on regular laptops. Thus, using gaze displays in an educational setting seems to be an increasingly feasible scenario.
