The study's purpose was to describe the competence in well-being at work of social and health care educators and the factors influencing it. Cross-sectional study. Data were collected using a questionnaire from social and health care educators (n=243) working at ten randomly selected educational organizations. K-means clustering was used to identify three distinct educator profiles. Educators belonging to profiles 1 and 2 exhibited low competence in managing work wellbeing. All profiles exhibited intermediate competence in promoting work wellbeing. Competence in appreciating the work of educators was either intermediate or high in all three profiles. Managers working in educational organizations need to ensure and support educators' well-being.

Health science teacher candidates should acquire skills for professional development during their education as teachers, both to ensure their professional competence and improve the quality of learning. This study aimed to identify the competence levels and competence development needs of health science teacher candidates, and the factors associated with those needs. The research applied cross-sectional design and was conducted in winter 2018-2019 in Finland. The Health and Social Care Educator's Competence instrument and the Educators' Professional Development instrument were used to collect data. Teacher candidates evaluated their competence as good into all areas of competence. Candidates' level of need to develop pedagogical competence related to their level of competence in leadership and management, subject and curriculum, and digital collaborative learning. Candidates with a higher level of collaboration and societal competence needed less development to manage challenging situations in teaching. Candidates with more work experience as an educator needed less competence development in managing challenging situations and leadership support. Based on the results, micro level competence should be developed from the start of health science teaching studies, and the latter stages of their studies should develop their macro level competence.

This study examines early childhood pre-service teachers' attitudes towards digital technologies and their relations to their self-perceived digital competence. Attitudes towards digital technologies were divided into core attitudes: general attitudes towards digital technologies; attitudes towards educational use of digital technologies; and perceived ease of digital technology use. Technological knowledge [TK] and technological content knowledge [TCK] dimensions of the TPACK framework were used to assess pre-service teachers' self-perceived digital competence. Two structural equation models, a correlated-traits model and a second-order factor model, were used to analyse the relations between attitudes and digital competence. Based on the results, the early childhood pre-service teachers held positive attitudes towards digital technologies. Both models fit the data well, but the correlated-traits model explained a larger portion of variance in competence measures. Moreover, this model provided a more fine-grained picture of the associations between attitudes and competence. The general attitudes towards digital technologies and perceived ease of digital technology use were related to both TK and TCK, whereas attitudes towards educational use of digital technologies were not. Therefore, the correlated-traits model was viewed as better at describing the relations between attitudes towards digital technologies and digital competence. The study contributes to the development of teacher education. Instead of considering the current generation of pre-service teachers as a homogeneous group, this study aims to understand how they differ in their attitudes and how they perceive their own competence to use digital technologies.

Abstract Science is integral to society because it can inform individual, government, corporate, and civil society decision-making on issues such as public health, new technologies or climate change. Yet, public distrust and populist sentiment challenge the relationship between science and society. To help researchers analyse the science-society nexus across different geographical and cultural contexts, we undertook a cross-sectional population survey resulting in a dataset of 71,922 participants in 68 countries. The data were collected between November 2022 and August 2023 as part of the global Many Labs study “Trust in Science and Science-Related Populism” (TISP). The questionnaire contained comprehensive measures for individuals’ trust in scientists, science-related populist attitudes, perceptions of the role of science in society, science media use and communication behaviour, attitudes to climate change and support for environmental policies, personality traits, political and religious views and demographic characteristics. Here, we describe the dataset, survey materials and psychometric properties of key variables. We encourage researchers to use this unique dataset for global comparative analyses on public perceptions of science and its role in society and policy-making.

The BioDT project, funded by the European Union Horizon Europe Programme, seeks to investigate and push the boundaries of methodological, intellectual, data, technical and relevance aspects of the digital twin (DT) approach for understanding and predicting biodiversity patterns and processes. In this special issue, we present the reasoning and goals of the project and the overall advancements made towards the development of ten prototype Digital Twins (pDTs). Based on models of ecosystems, species and biological processes, digital twins integrate diverse data sources with advanced modelling and simulation techniques to provide a comprehensive, dynamic and data-driven understanding of biodiversity. Leveraging the EuroHPC LUMI infrastructure and data and expertise from GBIF, eLTER, DiSSCo and LifeWatch ERIC research infrastructures, the project aims to develop hybrid models combining the strengths of statistical and process-based models for improved predictive capabilities. While there are specific challenges and limitations to biodiversity DTs, the pDTs of BioDT lay the foundation for model-data fusions that will offer potential benefits to a wide range of end-users, from researchers and conservation organisations to policy-makers, land managers, educators and private sector companies. By fostering global interoperability in biodiversity data and research, BioDT paves the way for future collaborative efforts in biodiversity conservation and management.

An educator's competence influences the implementation of evidence-based education and the overall quality of social and health care. This study aimed to identify distinct competence profiles from Finnish social, health and rehabilitative care educators, as well as describe which personal and professional characteristics influenced belonging to a certain profile. Data were collected from 28 educational organizations located throughout Finland using the Health and Social Care Educators' Competence instrument. The survey was answered by 422 educators. The performed K-means cluster analysis identified three distinct educator competence profiles, which differed in terms of self-assessed expertise in various competence areas and certain background characteristics. The results highlight that educational institutions should concentrate on refining the digital competence of educators, which requires networking, collaboration, and work-related pedagogical competence. The differences in evaluation identified for the three profiles demonstrates that more experienced educators should mentor their less experienced counterparts to ensure a high quality of education.

The purpose of this mixed methods study was to explore changes in pedagogical awareness of teaching early mathematical skills among teachers in early childhood education (N =7) when participating in a tailored professional development (PD) program in mathematics. The program, which was designed around principles of transformative learning, was aimed at strengthening the conscious and holistic teaching of early mathematical skills to 3- to 7-year-old children. Research Findings: Thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews revealed that teachers enhanced their pedagogical awareness of teaching early mathematical skills concerning developmentally appropriate mathematical content, child-initiated mathematical learning and holistic mathematical teaching in different daily situations and play. Data obtained from pre-PD and follow-up questionnaires completed by teachers confirmed a sustainable increase in their pedagogical awareness of numerical and spatial reasoning. Recognizing children's interests, reflecting on and examining one's own practices individually and collaboratively, and taking actions to develop teaching and learning practices aligned with those of the PD program comprised the foundation for the transformative process. Practice or Policy: It was concluded that PD programs in mathematics enhance teachers' pedagogical awareness of teaching early mathematical skills holistically when they are tailored to the needs of teachers, include reflective elements, and follow principles of transformative learning.

The dosimetry is used to verify the dose magnitude with artificial samples (phantoms) before giving the planned radiation therapy to the patient. Typically, dose distribution is measured only in a single point or on a two-dimensional matrix plane. New techniques of radiation therapy ensure more detailed planning of radiation dose distribution which will lead to the need of measuring the radiation dose distribution three-dimensionally. The gel dosimetry is used to indicate and determine the ionizing radiation three-dimensionally. The radiation causes changes in chemical properties of the gel. The radiation dose distribution is defined by measuring the chemical changes. A conventional method is the magnetic resonance imaging and a new possibility is optical computed tomography (optical-CT). The optical-CT is much cheaper and more practical than magnetic resonance imaging. In this project, an optical-CT based method device was built by aiming at low material costs and a simple realization. The constructed device applies the charge coupled device camera and fluorescent lamp technologies. The test results show that the opacity level of the radiated gel can be measured accurately enough. The imaging accuracy is restricted by the optical distortion, e. g. vignetting, of the lenses, the distortion of a fluorescent lamp as the light source and a noisy measuring environment.

Precision medicine is part of the logical evolution of contemporary evidence-based medicine that seeks to reduce errors and optimize outcomes when making medical decisions and health recommendations. Diabetes affects hundreds of millions of people worldwide, many of whom will develop life-threatening complications and die prematurely. Precision medicine can potentially address this enormous problem by accounting for heterogeneity in the etiology, clinical presentation and pathogenesis of common forms of diabetes and risks of complications. This second international consensus report on precision diabetes medicine summarizes the findings from a systematic evidence review across the key pillars of precision medicine (prevention, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis) in four recognized forms of diabetes (monogenic, gestational, type 1, type 2). These reviews address key questions about the translation of precision medicine research into practice. Although not complete, owing to the vast literature on this topic, they revealed opportunities for the immediate or near-term clinical implementation of precision diabetes medicine; furthermore, we expose important gaps in knowledge, focusing on the need to obtain new clinically relevant evidence. Gaps include the need for common standards for clinical readiness, including consideration of cost-effectiveness, health equity, predictive accuracy, liability and accessibility. Key milestones are outlined for the broad clinical implementation of precision diabetes medicine.

This study explored teaching early mathematical skills to 3- to 7-year-old children in early childhood education and care (ECEC) and pre-primary education. Teachers in ECEC (N = 206) answered a web survey. The first aim was to determine whether teaching frequency or pedagogical awareness of teaching early mathematical skills varied according to the category of skills (numerical skills, spatial thinking skills and mathematical thinking and reasoning skills) and whether children's age group moderated these differences. The second aim was to explore to what extent teacher-related characteristics and children's age group explained variations in teaching frequency concerning early mathematical skills. Results from repeated MANOVAs demonstrated that the frequency and pedagogical awareness of teaching early mathematical skills depended on the skill category and that children's age group moderated these differences. In 5- to 6-year-olds and 6- to 7-year-olds, numerical skills were taught more often than spatial thinking skills, whereas in 3- to 5-year-olds, they were taught as frequently. In all age groups, mathematical thinking and reasoning skills were taught the least. Pedagogical awareness was lowest in teaching spatial thinking skills in all age groups, but only in 6- to 7-year-olds was teachers' pedagogical awareness in teaching numerical skills higher than in the two other categories. According to a univariate analysis of variance, pedagogical awareness and mathematics professional development programmes were strongly associated with teaching frequency in all skill categories. The results emphasise that children's opportunities to learn early mathematical skills depend on teachers' characteristics.

Climate change significantly alters species distributions. Numerous studies project the future distribution of species using Species Distribution models (SDMs), most often using coarse resolutions. Working at coarse resolutions in forest ecosystems fails to capture landscape-level dynamics, spatially explicit processes, and temporally defined events that act at finer resolutions and that can disproportionately affect future outcomes. Dynamic Forest Landscape Models (FLMs) can simulate the survival, growth, and mortality of (stands of) trees over long time periods at small resolutions. However, as they are able to simulate at fine resolutions, study landscapes remain relatively small due to computational constraints. The large amount of feedbacks between biodiversity, forest, and ecosystem processes cannot completely be captured by FLMs or SDMs alone. Integrating SDMs with FLMs enables a more detailed understanding of the impact of perturbations on forest landscapes and their biodiversity. Several studies have used this approach at landscape scales, using fine resolutions. Yet, many scientific questions in the fields of biogeography, macroecology, conservation management, among others, require a focus on both large scales and fine resolutions. Here, drawn from literature and experience, we provide our perspective on the most important challenges that need to be overcome to use integrated frameworks at spatial scales larger than the landscape and at fine resolutions. Future research should prioritize these challenges to better understand drivers of species distributions in forest ecosystems and effectively design conservation strategies under the influence of changing climates on spatially and temporally explicit processes. We further discuss possibilities to address these challenges.

This case study focuses on an expert early childhood education and care teacher’s practical theory in language pedagogy when implementing bilingual pedagogy (Finnish–Swedish) in a linguistically heterogeneous group of children aged 3–5 years. Practical theory refers to teachers’ views of good teaching that guide their practices. Applying a mediated discourse analysis approach (nexus analysis), we examine the interplay of factors that promote and challenge changes in the practical theory of language pedagogy in early childhood education and care. The discourses show that the changes are related to Swedish use (a new language for the children) and the use of the children’s home languages. Several personal, interactional, and contextual factors circulate in the expert teacher’s discourses, affecting the changes in her practical theory. Personal factors include reflection, beliefs, and experiences. Feedback from parents and children represents interactional factors, whereas contextual factors cover concepts such as participation and language-enriched teaching. This study highlights the significance of the multiple interrelated factors that are present when an expert teacher’s practical theory of language pedagogy changes, which needs to be reflected upon both in the practice of early childhood education and in teacher training.

Evidence-based interventions can develop social and emotional competencies and foster social relationships during early childhood. In this paper, we explored the efficacy, implementation fidelity, and social validity of two systemic, preventive social-emotional learning interventions in Finnish early childhood education and care (ECEC)—ProVaka and Papilio—after their initial nine weeks of implementation. ProVaka is an application of Positive Behavior Intervention and Support that provides general guidelines for the development of social-emotional skills. Alongside general guidelines, the Papilio intervention also utilizes ready-made lesson plans and play-based measures. In this study, 80 ECEC classes from 39 ECEC centers participated in a cluster-randomized controlled trial. We measured educators’ feedback, children’s behavior, social validity, and implementation fidelity. The results indicate effects particularly on educator-reported child behavior and educators’ feedback on certain observed areas when the systemic interventions were implemented with sufficient fidelity. Further, both interventions seem well suitable for Finnish ECEC context.

Tässä kirjallisuuskatsauksessa tarkastellaan, millaista metsien monimuotoisuutta kuvaavaa tietoa voidaan saada nykyaikaisen kaukokartoitus- ja sensoritekniikan avulla. Käsittely keskittyy Suomeen, Ruotsiin ja Norjaan, missä metsät, ilmasto-olot ja teknologiset valmiudet sekä käytetyt teknologiat ovat samankaltaisia. Laserkeilaimia ja kuvantavia monikanavasensoreita voidaan asentaa monenlaisille liikkuville alustoille: satelliitteihin, lentokoneisiin, drooneihin ja metsäkoneisiin. Mitä lähempää kohdetta havainnoidaan, sitä tarkempaa tietoa saadaan, mutta sitä pienempi on myös kerralla havainnoitu pinta-ala. Yleisesti käytetyistä monimuotoisuuden indikaattoreista suurikokoisten säästöpuiden määrää, puuston eri-ikäisrakenteisuutta ja vesistöjen suojavyöhykkeitä voidaan havainnoida suhteellisen luotettavasti Suomessa laajalti saatavilla olevilla lentolaserkeilausaineistoilla. Lahopuun ja vähälukuisten puulajien, kuten haavan (Populus tremula L.), tunnistaminen onnistuu tällä hetkellä esimerkiksi droonien avulla pienille alueille kerrallaan, mutta riittävän tarkan tiedon saaminen suuralueille vaatii nykyistä tarkemman tekniikan käyttöönottamista lentokoneilla tehtävissä kartoituksissa. Tietyille eläin- ja kasvilajeille sopivia elinympäristöjä voidaan kartoittaa suuriltakin alueilta, mutta esimerkiksi pintakasvillisuudesta ei käytännössä vielä saada riittävän tarkkoja suoria havaintoja. Kaukokartoitus soveltuu kuitenkin hyvin maastoinventointien kohdentamiseen oikeisiin paikkoihin. Metsäkonetietoa hyödyntämällä on mahdollista dokumentoida hakkuissa tehdyt tekopökkelöt ja säästöpuuryhmän tai muun käsittelemättömän alueen, esimerkiksi vesistön tai pienveden suojavyöhykkeen, avainbiotoopin, suojeltavan alueen tai riistatiheikön ympäriltä hakatut rungot. Hyödynnettäessä metsäkonetietoa metsäluonnon monimuotoisuuden mittaamisessa ja seurannassa tärkein asia juuri nyt on parantaa hakkuukoneen hakkuulaitteen sijaintitiedon tarkkuutta anturoimalla hakkuukoneen puomi. Tulevaisuudessa tavoitteena on oltava automatisoitu metsäluonnon monimuotoisuuden mittaaminen ja dokumentointi puunkorjuuoperaatioiden yhteydessä, mikä edellyttää metsäkoneen sensorointia. Tarkan, automatisoidun monimuotoisuustiedon tuottaminen metsäkoneissa olevilla sensoreilla on todennäköisesti mahdollista toteuttaa tällä vuosikymmenellä. Yhteenvetona kaukokartoitus- ja sensoritekniikka mahdollistaa tulevaisuudessa huomattavasti nykyistä tarkemman metsien monimuotoisuutta kuvaavan tiedon keräämisen myös suuralueilta. Tarkimpaan lopputulokseen päästään yhdistämällä useista eri lähteistä peräisin olevia tietoja.

BackgroundMobilization of certain immune cells may improve the ability of the immune system to combat tumor cells, but the effect of acute exercise on mobilizing immune cells has been sparsely investigated in cancer patients. Therefore, we examined how acute exercise influences circulating immune cells in breast cancer patients.MethodsNineteen newly diagnosed breast cancer patients aged 36–68 performed 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise with a cycle ergometer. Blood samples were collected at various time points: at rest, at 15 (E15) and 30 minutes (E30) after onset of the exercise, and at 30 and 60 minutes post-exercise. We analyzed several immune cell subsets using flow cytometry.ResultsAcute exercise increased the number of total leukocytes, neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, basophils, total T-cells, CD4+ T-cells, T helper (Th) 2-cells, Th 17-cells, CD8+ T-cells, CD4-CD8- T-cells, CD56+ natural killer (NK) cells, and CD14-CD16+ monocytes. Many of the changes were transient. Proportions of NK-cells and CD8+ T-cells increased, while the proportion of myeloid derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) reduced, and proportion of regulatory T-cells remained unchanged by exercise. Several associations were detected between cell mobilizations and disease state. For instance, tumor size correlated negatively with NK cell mobilization at E15, and progesterone receptor positivity correlated negatively with CD8+ T-cell mobilization.ConclusionThe findings show that the proportions of CD8+ T-cells and NK cells increased and the proportion of MDSCs proportion decreased in breast cancer patients after 30-minute exercise, suggesting a change in the profile of circulating immune cells towards more cytotoxic/anti-tumorigenic. The mobilization of some immune cells also appears to be related to the disease state.

This research examines how practice architectures, i.e., cultural-discursive, material-economic, and social-political arrangements both enable and constrain the pedagogical leadership practice of early child-hood education (ECE) center directors (N = 3). The data were collected by a qualitative shadowing method and analyzed deductively using the theory of practice architectures. The findings revealed that social- political arrangements were fundamental for directing pedagogical leadership practice, affecting both material- economic and cultural-discursive arrangements. The social- political arrangements of pedagog-ical leadership were grounded in the municipality’s organizational structure; in turn, this structure organ-ized daily pedagogical leadership practices. Social-political arrangements were narrated as the directors emphasized the importance of national guidelines, legislation, and implementation of the national and local curricula. These were related to the material-economic arrangements because they required organizing time for discussion and further training of personnel. The national guidelines combined material-economic and social-political aspects as well as cultural-discursive arrangements in leadership practice, as pedagog-ical development aligned with legislation and national curriculum demands in a wide range of leadership functions in ECE centers. The essence of pedagogical leadership practice was the focal point of joint dis-cussions regarding pedagogy and the implementation of curriculum in the ECE centers. Most significantly, the quality of these discussions could enable or constrain pedagogical leadership and were influenced by cultural-discursive arrangements and leadership philosophy of the center directors alike.

Abstract Aquaculture is a key component of Ghana's food system strategies, promoting sustainable animal protein production. Aquaculture complements traditional marine capture fisheries to close the gap between demand and supply. However, about one third of fish produced globally have been reported to go to waste yearly. Among the various cultured fish, the Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus is a predominant species. This study aimed to estimate the extent of Nile tilapia wastage by consumers in Ghana. A web‐based cross‐sectional consumer survey was designed to assess the parts of the tilapia consumers generally classified as edible or inedible, taking into account the three primary tilapia preparation methods. The study utilised a semi‐structured online questionnaire, gathering responses from 246 participants. The parts of Nile tilapia investigated included the flesh, fins, offal, head, scales, bones, and gill flaps/opercula. The analysis of consumed and wasted parts of Nile tilapias by weight showed that, on average, the flesh made up the majority of the fish at 55.26%, followed by the head at 26.46%, offal at 8.51%, scales at 3.10%, fins at 2.93%, bones at 2.76%, and operculum at 0.98%, which was the smallest component. The study concluded that approximately 30%–45% of waste is generated from Nile tilapia in the Ghanaian supply chain. Tilapia was widely consumed by all groups, with an average liking score of 7.69 ± 1.95 on a 10‐point hedonic scale. A significant association was found between gender and consumption patterns with females showing a higher degree of liking. There was a strong association between the method of preparation and consumption patterns; the fried parts were classified as more edible compared to those that were boiled or grilled. To reduce waste in the aquaculture industry, tilapia and other fishes could be processed in a way that various edible and inedible parts are sold separately.

Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the implementation of appreciative management from the perspective of healthcare workers in selected Estonian healthcare organizations. Design: The study was conducted as a cross-sectional study. Methods: Data were collected from healthcare workers (n = 215) using an Appreciative Management Scale in two different sized hospitals and two healthcare centers. Data were analyzed using non-parametric tests. The study was reported according to STROBE guidelines. Results: Appreciative management was implemented very well. Of the dimensions of appreciative management, equality of employees was the best implemented and systematic management was the least well implemented. Appreciative management had a statistically significant connection with intention to change workplace and with experience of appreciation from first-line managers and upper managers. Conclusion: With the help of appreciative management, it may be possible to increase commitment to work. The appreciation offered by managers to healthcare workers seems to improve healthcare workers' evaluation of the implementation of appreciative management. In health care, it is important to recognize appreciative management and the benefits it creates for healthcare workers' commitment to their work and profession.
