Mathematical modeling is a powerful tool in rheology, and we present pyRheo, an open-source package for Python designed to streamline the analysis of creep, stress relaxation, oscillation, and rotation tests. pyRheo contains a comprehensive selection of viscoelastic models, including fractional order approaches. It integrates model selection and fitting features and employs machine intelligence to suggest a model to describe a given dataset. The package fits the suggested model or one chosen by the user. An advantage of using pyRheo is that it addresses challenges associated with sensitivity to initial guesses in parameter optimization. It allows the user to iteratively search for the best initial guesses, avoiding convergence to local minima. We discuss the capabilities of pyRheo and compare them to other tools for rheological modeling of biological matter. We demonstrate that pyRheo significantly reduces the computation time required to fit high-performance viscoelastic models.

The Euclidean path integral approach to quantum gravity is conventionally formulated in terms of the Einstein-Hilbert-York-Gibbons-Hawking action, which requires suitable subtractions to produce the correct black hole partition function. However, there is a unique, canonical teleparallel reformulation which reproduces the same results without subtractions or other ambiguities. This is verified in the case of a black hole with or without an electric or a magnetic charge and in a background with or without a cosmological constant. Black hole solutions are explored in the Lorentz gauge theory of gravity. The fields of the theory are the gauge potential in the adjoint and a scalar in the fundamental representation of the Lorentz group, a metric tensor then emerging as a composite field in a symmetry-broken phase. Three distinct such phases of the theory are considered. In an SO(3) phase, the fundamental field is identified with a generalised Painlev\'e-Gullstrand-Lema\^itre coordinate time. In the static spherically symmetric case it is a stealth scalar, and the general vacuum solution is then parameterised by two constants, one related to the black hole mass and the other to an observer. Also, formulations of pregeometric first order electromagnetism are considered in order to construct a consistent realisation of a charged black hole. In an SO(1,2) phase of the theory, the Schwarzschild solution is realised as a configuration wherein the fundamental field is real outside and imaginary inside the horizon. In this phase the field can be associated with an effective radial pressure resulting in additional singularities and asymptotic non-flatness. Finally, a symmetry-broken phase which would correspond to solutions in an alternative attempt at a Lorentz gauge theory is shown to be incompatible with black holes., Comment: 29 pages, 3 figures. Theories formulated in the arena of teleparallel geometries are generically plagued by ghost-like instabilities or other pathologies that are ultimately caused by the breaking of some symmetries. In this work, we construct a class of ghost-free theories based on a symmetry under Transverse Diffeomorphisms that is naturally realised in symmetric teleparallelism. We explicitly show their equivalence to a family of theories with an extra scalar field plus a global degree of freedom and how Horndeski theories and healthy couplings to matter fields can be readily accommodated., Comment: 11 pages, no figures. Motivated by cosmological applications for interacting matters, an extension of the action functional for relativistic fluids is proposed to incorporate the physics of non-adiabatic processes and chemical reactions. The former are characterised by entropy growth, while the latter violate particle number conservation. The relevance of these physics is demonstrated in the contexts of self-interacting fluids, fluids interacting with scalar fields, and hyperhydrodynamical interactions with geometry. The possible cosmological applications range from early-universe phase transitions to astrophysical phenomena, and from matter creation inflationary alternatives to interacting dark sector alternatives to the $\Lambda$CDM model that aim to address its tensions. As an example of the latter, a single fluid model of a unified dark sector is presented. We explore a new action formulation of hyperfluids, fluids with intrinsic hypermomentum. Brown's Lagrangian for a relativistic perfect fluid is generalised by incorporating the degrees of freedom encoded in the hypermomentum tensor, namely by including connection-matter couplings. Quite interestingly, generic hyperfluids are imperfect, since hypermomentum induces such effects as bulk and shear viscosities as well as heat fluxes. The various coefficients that appear in the first order expansion of hydrodynamics can now be deduced from a Lagrangian formulation, given a geometrical interpretation and a suggested microscopic description in terms of hypermomentum. This connection between hypermomentum and dissipative fluids could shed new light on the physics of relativistic hydrodynamics. The intrinsic presence of ghosts in the symmetric teleparallel framework is elucidated. We illustrate our general arguments in $f(\mathbb{Q})$ theories by studying perturbations in the three inequivalent spatially flat cosmologies. Two of these branches exhibit reduced linear spectra, signalling they are infinitely strongly coupled. For the remaining branch we unveil the presence of seven gravitational degrees of freedom and show that at least one of them is a ghost. Our results rule out $f(\mathbb{Q})$ cosmologies and clarify the number of propagating degrees of freedom in these theories., Comment: 5 pages. V2: Some clarifications added. The consecutive transients (CT) method is a diagnostics approach combining experimental and computational techniques to probe the plasma parameters of Charge Breeder Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Sources (CB-ECRIS). The method is based on short pulse injection of singly charged ions into the charge breeder plasma, and the measurement of the resulting transients of the charge bred multiply charged ions. Estimates for plasma density, average electron energy and characteristic times of ion confinement, electron impact ionization and charge exchange are then computationally derived from the experimental data. Here the CT method is applied for parametric studies of CBECRIS plasma. Potassium ions were charge bred with hydrogen support plasma, and the effects of varied microwave power, neutral gas pressure and magnetic field strength on the plasma parameters and charge breeding efficiency are presented. It is shown that the method is sufficiently sensitive to provide relevant information on changing plasma conditions with the control parameters. The neutral gas pressure had the strongest impact on the plasma parameters, and the results agree with trends obtained by using other diagnostic methods, e.g. the increase of plasma density with increased neutral gas pressure. Furthermore, the method can provide information inaccessible with other methods, such as the characteristic times of ion confinement, ionization and charge exchange, and the hierarchy between them. The results show that the peak charge breeding efficiency is obtained for the highest ion charge state for which the ionization time remains shorter than the charge exchange and the ion confinement times.

General (tele)parallel Relativity, G$_\parallel$R, is the relativistic completion of Einstein's theories of gravity. The focus of this article is the derivation of the homogeneous and isotropic solution in G$_\parallel$R. The first-principles derivation, based on a non-trivial realisation of the symmetry, supersedes and unifies previous constructions of Riemannian and teleparallel cosmologies, and establishes the uniqueness of the physical solution. The constitutive law and the form of the material and inertial source currents is presented in the tensor (Palatini) formalism and adapted to the cosmological background, which exhibits novel features absent in the previously studied, static solutions to the theory. This proceeding is an introduction to cosmological applications of the Lorentz gauge theory. It provides the ingredients for a unique, though yet tentative $\Lambda$CDM theory of cosmology. The emergence of spacetime is described by the spontaneous symmetry breaking called here the khronogenesis. Space is then associated with the field strength of the antiself-dual gauge potential, and gravity is associated with the self-dual field strength. In the cosmological setting, khronogenesis seems to predict inflation. It is shown that the Lorentz gauge theory allows the consistent description of spin currents which could have important roles in cosmological phenomenology., Comment: 24 pages

The Bayesian network structure learning (BNSL) problem asks for a directed acyclic graph that maximizes a given score function. For networks with $n$ nodes, the fastest known algorithms run in time $O(2^n n^2)$ in the worst case, with no improvement in the asymptotic bound for two decades. Inspired by recent advances in quantum computing, we ask whether BNSL admits a polynomial quantum speedup, that is, whether the problem can be solved by a quantum algorithm in time $O(c^n)$ for some constant $c$ less than $2$. We answer the question in the affirmative by giving two algorithms achieving $c \leq 1.817$ and $c \leq 1.982$ assuming the number of potential parent sets is, respectively, subexponential and $O(1.453^n)$. Both algorithms assume the availability of a quantum random access memory.

Fatigue failure of crystalline materials is a difficult problem in science and engineering, and recent results have shown that fatigue crack growth can occur in intermittent jumps which have fat-tailed distributions. As fatigue crack propagation is known to leave markings -- called striations -- on the fracture surface, the distances between these should also have fat-tailed distributions, if the crack propagation is intermittent. Here, we combine macroscale crack tip tracking in fatigue crack growth measurements of aluminum 5005 samples with \emph{post-mortem} scanning electron microscopy imaging of the striation lines. We introduce two different methods for extracting the striation line spacing from the images. What we find is a similar distribution of striation spacings as jump sizes using one of our methods, but the average striation spacing does not correlate with the crack growth rate. We conclude that we observe avalanche-like crack propagation, reflected in both the macroscale crack tip tracking as well as the analysis of the fracture surfaces. Our results show that the fracture surfaces can be used to study the intermittency of fatigue crack propagation and in development of crack-resistant materials. The advantages and disadvantages of the two methods introduced are discussed.

We write down the teleparallel equivalent to Hassan-Rosen bigravity, which is written using a torsionful but curvature-free connection. The theories only differ by a boundary term. The equivalence was proven, both by using perturbation theory and Hamiltonian analysis. It is further shown how one can construct novel bigravity theories within the teleparallel framework. Some of those are analyzed through perturbation theory, and it is found that all of the considered novel bigravity theories suffer from pathologies. In particular, it is found that a construction with two copies of new general relativity leads to ghostly degrees of freedom which are not present in the single tetrad teleparallel corresponding theory. We demonstrate how the teleparallel framework allows to easily create theories with derivative interaction. However, it is shown through perturbation theory that the simplest model is not viable. Furthermore, we demonstrate some steps in the Hamiltonian analysis of teleparallel bigravity with two copies of new general relativity and some toy models. The results rule out some of the novel teleparallel bigravity theories, but also demonstrate techniques in perturbation theory and Hamiltonian analysis which could be further used for more profound theories in the future., Comment: 32 pages, 1 figure, matches published version

Knowledge is considered an essential resource for organizations. For organizations to benefit from their possessed knowledge, knowledge needs to be managed effectively. Despite knowledge sharing and management being viewed as important by practitioners, organizations fail to benefit from their knowledge, leading to issues in cooperation and the loss of valuable knowledge with departing employees. This study aims to identify hindering factors that prevent individuals from effectively sharing and managing knowledge and understand how to eliminate these factors. Empirical data were collected through semi-structured group interviews from 50 individuals working in an international large IT organization. This study confirms the existence of a gap between the perceived importance of knowledge management and how little this importance is reflected in practice. Several hindering factors were identified, grouped into personal social topics, organizational social topics, technical topics, environmental topics, and interrelated social and technical topics. The presented recommendations for mitigating these hindering factors are focused on improving employees' actions, such as offering training and guidelines to follow. The findings of this study have implications for organizations in knowledge-intensive fields, as they can use this knowledge to create knowledge sharing and management strategies to improve their overall performance.

In the conventional formulation of general relativity, gravity is represented by the metric curvature of Riemannian geometry. There are also alternative formulations in flat affine geometries, wherein the gravitational dynamics is instead described by torsion and nonmetricity. These so called general teleparallel geometries may also have applications in material physics, such as the study of crystal defects. In this work, we explore the general teleparallel geometry in the language of differential forms. We discuss the special cases of metric and symmetric teleparallelisms, clarify the relations between formulations with different gauge fixings and without gauge fixing, and develop a method of recasting Riemannian into teleparallel geometries. In special-relativistic physics, spacetime is imbued with a fixed, non-dynamical metric tensor. A path to gravitational theory is to promote this tensor to a genuine dynamical field. An alternative description of special-relativistic physics involves no fixed geometry but instead the inclusion of scalar fields $X^{I}(x^{\mu})$ which dynamically may take the form of inertial coordinates in spacetime. This suggests an alternative approach to gravity where the invariance of actions under global Poincar\'{e} transformations of $X^{I}$ is promoted to either a local Poincar\'{e} or local Lorentz symmetry via the introduction of gauge fields. Points of commonality and departure of the resulting gravitational theories as compared to General Relativity are discussed. It is shown that the model based on local Lorentz symmetry is an extension of General Relativity that can introduce a standard of time into the dynamics of the gravitational field and allows for spacetimes described by a Minkowski metric or flat Euclidean signature metric despite the gravitational gauge field possessing non-zero curvature., Comment: Citations and content added

In this work we study diffeomorphism-invariant metric-affine theories of gravity from the point of view of self-interacting field theories on top of Minkowski spacetime (or other background). We revise how standard metric theories couple to their own energy-momentum tensor, and discuss the generalization of these ideas when torsion and nonmetricity are also present. We review the computation of the corresponding currents through the Hilbert and canonical (Noether) prescriptions, emphasizing the potential ambiguities arising from both. We also provide the extension of this consistent self-coupling procedure to the vielbein formalism, so that fermions can be included in the matter sector. In addition, we clarify some subtle issues regarding previous discussions on the self-coupling problem for metric theories, both General Relativity and its higher derivative generalizations. Wood deformation, in particular when subject to compression, exhibits scale-free avalanche-like behavior as well as structure-dependent localization of deformation. We have taken three-dimensional (3D) x-ray tomographs during compression with constant stress rate loading. Using digital volume correlation, we obtain the local total strain during the experiment and compare it to the global strain and acoustic emission. The wood cells collapse layer by layer throughout the sample starting from the softest parts, i.e., the spring wood. As the damage progresses, more and more of the softwood layers throughout the sample collapse, which indicates damage spreading instead of localization. In 3D, one can see a fat-tailed local strain rate distribution, indicating that inside the softwood layers, the damage occurs in localized spots. The observed log-normal strain distribution is in agreement with this view of the development of independent local collapses or irreversible deformation events. A key feature in the mechanical behavior of wood is then in the complex interaction of localized deformation between or among the annual rings.
