Abstract

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) of photons is carried upon the wave front of an optical vortex and is important in physics research due to its fundamental degree of freedom. As for the interaction with materials, the optical OAM was shown to be transferred to the valence electron based on modified selection rules where a single ion is carefully aligned to the center of a vortex [Schmiegelow et al.(2016)]. We here demonstrate an elaborate way of extracting the distributed OAMs in the two-dimensional x-ray wave field at the exit-face of the specimen by a vorticity-sensitive microscopy, which detects vorticity in the reciprocal-space wave field downstream of the optical vortices. This method enables us to measure the distributed topological charges and OAMs by a single image with the wide field of view over 300 $\mu$m. Among various wavelength, the research of x-ray OAM is especially interesting since it could be closely related to the predicted OAM-induced x-ray dichroism [Veenendaal et al.(2007)]., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

It is self‐evident that our chests expand and contract during breathing but, surprisingly, exactly how individual alveoli change shape over the respiratory cycle is still a matter of debate. Some argue that all the alveoli expand and contract rhythmically. Others claim that the lung volume change is due to groups of alveoli collapsing and reopening during ventilation. Although this question might seem to be an insignificant detail for healthy individuals, it might be a matter of life and death for patients with compromised lungs. Past analyses were based on static post‐mortem preparations primarily due to technological limitations, and therefore, by definition, incapable of providing dynamic information. In contrast, this study provides the first comprehensive dynamic data on how the shape of the alveoli changes, and, further, provides valuable insights into the optimal lung volume for efficient gas exchange. It is concluded that alveolar micro‐dynamics is nonlinear; and at medium lung volume, alveoli expand more than the ducts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We have been developing monolithic active pixel sensors, known as Kyoto's X-ray SOIPIXs, based on the CMOS SOI (silicon-on-insulator) technology for next-generation X-ray astronomy satellites. The event trigger output function implemented in each pixel offers microsecond time resolution and enables reduction of the non-X-ray background that dominates the high X-ray energy band above 5--10 keV. A fully depleted SOI with a thick depletion layer and back illumination offers wide band coverage of 0.3--40 keV. Here, we report recent progress in the X-ray SOIPIX development. In this study, we achieved an energy resolution of 300~eV (FWHM) at 6~keV and a read-out noise of 33~e- (rms) in the frame readout mode, which allows us to clearly resolve Mn-K$\alpha$ and K$\beta$. Moreover, we produced a fully depleted layer with a thickness of $500~{\rm \mu m}$. 10. The Nature of Ultra-Luminous Compact X-Ray Sources in Nearby Spiral Galaxies

Abstract

Studies were made of ASCA spectra of seven ultra-luminous compact X-ray sources (ULXs) in nearby spiral galaxies; M33 X-8 (Takano et al. 1994), M81 X-6 (Fabbiano 1988b; Kohmura et al. 1994; Uno 1997), IC 342 Source 1 (Okada et al. 1998), Dwingeloo 1 X-1 (Reynolds et al. 1997), NGC 1313 Source B (Fabbiano & Trinchieri 1987; Petre et al. 1994), and two sources in NGC 4565 (Mizuno et al. 1999). With the 0.5--10 keV luminosities in the range 10^{39-40} ergs/s, they are thought to represent a class of enigmatic X-ray sources often found in spiral galaxies. For some of them, the ASCA data are newly processed, or the published spectra are reanalyzed. For others, the published results are quoted. The ASCA spectra of all these seven sources have been described successfully with so called multi-color disk blackbody (MCD) emission arising from optically-thick standard accretion disks around black holes. Except the case of M33 X-8, the spectra do not exhibit hard tails. For the source luminosities not to exceed the Eddington limits, the black holes are inferred to have rather high masses, up to ~100 solar masses. However, the observed innermost disk temperatures of these objects, Tin = 1.1--1.8 keV, are too high to be compatible with the required high black-hole masses, as long as the standard accretion disks around Schwarzschild black holes are assumed. Similarly high disk temperatures are also observed from two Galactic transients with superluminal motions, GRO 1655-40 and GRS 1915+105. The issue of unusually high disk temperature may be explained by the black hole rotation, which makes the disk get closer to the black hole, and hence hotter., Comment: submitted to ApJ, December 1999

Abstract

Since 2020, synchrotron radiation facilities in several Asia-Pacific countries have been collaborating in a major project called "SYNAPSE"(Synchrotrons for Neuroscience: an Asia-Pacific Scientific Enterprise). They use x-ray imaging to attack in a coordinated fashion one of the major issues in modern science: the structure of animal and human brains, including neurons and connections. The objective is to develop Google-like maps also including detailed structural and functional information for selected regions of interest. The sheer mass of data needed for the objective poses huge problems for the acquisition, processing, storage and use of images. In order to complete the task within a reasonable time, the key element of the SYNAPSE strategy is the parallel and coordinated work of several facilities on the same specimens. This article reviews different aspects of the enterprise, including the foundations of synchrotron radiation, coherence and of its role in advanced imaging, electron accelerators, x-ray optics and detectors. This will provide the foundation for an extensive presentation of the different components of SYNAPSE, with an overview of results already obtained within the consortium.

Wyman, Ross Harder, Yoshiki Kohmura, Makina Yabashi, Lahsen Assoufid, Tetsuya Ishikawa, and Kazuto Yamauchi, "Optimal deformation procedure for hybrid adaptive x-ray mirror based on mechanical and piezo-driven bending system", Review of Scientific Instruments 92, 123706 (2021), https://doi.org/10.1063/5.0070465., A hybrid deformable x-ray mirror consisting of a mechanical bender and a bimorph deformable mirror has been developed to realize adaptive optical systems, such as zoom condenser optics, for synchrotron-radiation-based x-ray microscopy. In the developed system, both bending mechanisms comprehensively contribute to the formation of the target mirror shape and can narrow the role of piezoelectric actuators, thereby enabling a more stable operation. In this study, the behavior of the bimorph mirror under the clamped condition was investigated, and the sharing of the deformation amount for each bending mechanism was optimized to minimize the amplitude of the voltage distribution of the bimorph mirror.

An insight is provided to the design of the coherent imaging experiments free from the artifacts produced by the distorted illumination wave. Functional metal nanoclusters can be effective inhibitory agents against microorganisms according to various characterization methods, but quantitative three-dimensional (3D) spatial structural analysis of intact cells is lacking. Herein, using coherent X-ray diffraction imaging, we performed in situ 3D visualization of unstained Staphylococcus aureuscells treated with peptide-mineralized Au-cluster probes at a resolution of ∼47 nm. Subsequent 3D mass-density mapping and quantitative structural analyses of S. aureusin different degrees of destruction showed that the bacterial cell wall was damaged and cytoplasmic constituents were released from cells, confirming the significant antibacterial effects of the Au-cluster probe. This study provides a promising nondestructive approach for quantitative imaging and paves the way for further research into microbe–inhibitor drug interactions.

Abstract

ASCA observed SN 1993J seven times between April 5 and October 24 in 1993. The 1-10 keV luminosity 10d after the explosion was (15 +/- 4) x 10(exp 39) erg/s and decreased monotonicly to (1.3 +/- 0.4) x 10(exp 39) erg/s 210 d after the explosion, when a distance of 3.6 Mpc was assumed. The hardness ratio (2-10 keV/0.5-2 keV) significantly decreased during the course of the observations. The spectrum obtained from a sky region including not only SN 1993J but also the nearby X-ray source clearly shows an iron emission line. The correlation between the iron line flux with the SN 1993J flux suggests that the iron line emission originated in SN 1993J. These observational results are discussed in the context of thermal X-ray emission from a hot region behind the shock due to the collision of the supernova ejecta with the pre-supernova stellar wind.
