Kohlrabi is an important swollen-stem cabbage variety belonging to the Brassicaceae family. However, few complete chloroplast genome sequences of this genus have been reported. Here, a complete chloroplast genome with a quadripartite cycle of 153,364 bp was obtained. A total of 132 genes were identified, including 87 protein-coding genes, 37 transfer RNA genes and eight ribosomal RNA genes. The base composition analysis showed that the overall GC content was 36.36% of the complete chloroplast genome sequence. Relative synonymous codon usage frequency (RSCU) analysis showed that most codons with values greater than 1 ended with A or U, while most codons with values less than 1 ended with C or G. Thirty-five scattered repeats were identified and most of them were distributed in the large single-copy (LSC) region. A total of 290 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were found and 188 of them were distributed in the LSC region. Phylogenetic relationship analysis showed that five Brassica oleracea subspecies were clustered into one group and the kohlrabi chloroplast genome was closely related to that of B. oleracea var. botrytis. Our results provide a basis for understanding chloroplast-dependent metabolic studies and provide new insight for understanding the polyploidization of Brassicaceae species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Low-temperature and low-salt fermented Chinese kohlrabi (LSCK) represents a novel approach to producing low-salt kohlrabi without the need for desalination during processing, as compared to traditional techniques. However, the profile of its non-volatile metabolites remains unclear. In order to investigate the non-volatile metabolites and their changes in LSCK during fermentation, the LSCKs fermented for 0 day (0D), 45 days (45D) and 90 days (90D) were analyzed using LC-MS/MS non-targeted metabolomics coupled with multivariate statistical analysis. The results showed that 60, 74, and 68 differential metabolites were identified in the three groups A1 (0D and 45D), A2 (0D and 90D), and A3 (45D and 90D) (VIP >1, p 1), respectively. The differential metabolites were mainly amino acids, peptides, and analogues, fatty acyls, organic acids and derivatives, and carbohydrates and carbohydrate conjugates. Seventeen common differential metabolites were identified in A1, A2, and A3 groups. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis suggested that the alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism, butanoate metabolism, α-linolenic acid metabolism, arginine biosynthesis, and phenylalanine metabolism were significantly correlated with the differential metabolites. The present study elucidates for the first time the changes in non-volatile differential metabolites and their associated metabolic pathways in the novel Chinese low-salt kohlrabi, providing a theoretical basis for improving the industrial fermentation process of this innovative product.

The paper presents the results of experimental research on the peculiarities of the chemical composition of kohlrabi varieties 'Azur', 'Videnska Synia', 'Videnska Bila' and 'Hihant' cultivated in field conditions in the Forest Steppe of Ukraine. The goal of the research was to track changes in the biochemical composition of kohlrabi under the effect of varietal factor. The experiment was carried out in the years 2018-2021. It was found that the vegetation period of the variety 'Hihant' is 145 days, while the vegetation period of varieties 'Azur', 'Videnska Synia' and 'Videnska Bila' ranges between 60 and 80 days. As a result of the longer vegetation period, 'Hihant' overcomes other varieties under study by the content of water (88.7%) and dietary fiber (2.1 g/kg). Kohlrabi variety 'Videnska Synia' is the most suitable for dietary nutrition, since it has a higher content of vitamins A, B1, B9, B4, C, B3, and essential amino acids, such as arginine, valine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine and phenylalanine, compared to other varieties. The content of linoleic, linolenic and palmitic acids is also the highest in 'Videnska Synia'. However, the content of vitamin B6 is the highest in 'Hihant'. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to investigate the effects of ultra-long-term fermentation on the formation of non-volatile metabolites of Chinese solid-fermented kohlrabies. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) based non-targeted metabolomics coupled with multivariate statistical analysis were employed to respectively analyze the kohlrabies solid fermented for 5 years (5Y), 8 years (8Y), and 11 years (11Y). The results showed that 31, 169, and 123 differential metabolites were identified in the three groups of 5Y and 8Y (A1), 5Y and 11Y (A2), and 8Y and 11Y (A3), respectively (VIP > 1, p < 0.05 and |log2FC| > 1). The differential non-volatile metabolites were mainly organic acids and derivatives, organoheterocyclic compounds, benzenoids, lipids and lipid-like molecules, and organicoxygen compounds. Furthermore, 11 common differential metabolites were screened in the three groups, including diaminopimelic acid, ectoine, 9,10,13-TriHOME, and 9 others. The citrate cycle, glycine, serine and threonine metabolism, pantothenate and CoA biosynthesis, and glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism were the four pathways most significantly correlated with the differential non-volatile metabolites based on the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis (p < 0.05). Kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes) is a vegetable cultivated for its edible stem tuber. Although valued for its nutritional properties and tolerance to abiotic stress, kohlrabi is one of the least studied brassicas. In this review, we summarize the results of our decade-long research on in vitro morphogenesis of kohlrabi, starting from 2013. Protocols for efficient in vitro regeneration with minimal requirements for external application of plant growth regulators (PGRs) have been developed, both by somatic embryogenesis (SE) and by de novo shoot organogenesis (DNSO). Efficient regeneration by direct SE was achieved using immature zygotic embryos as explants incubated on PGR-free media, and the production process was maintained in culture thanks to highly efficient secondary SE. Conversely, efficient regeneration by indirect DNSO was achieved using entire seedlings as explants and adding only cytokinin (CK) without the need for exogenous auxin. Comprehensive phytohormone analyses revealed that different exogenously applied CKs differentially affected the composition of endogenous phytohormones and induced changes in the expression of cell cycle-related genes and other genes involved in the organogenic response. The addition of high sucrose concentrations to the nutrient media failed to induce the formation of stem tubers in in vitro culture, but revealed a complex interaction with exogenously applied CKs, interfering with both the endogenous phytohormonome and the expression of organogenesis-related genes. Our work has provided substantial biotechnological advances in the field of in vitro regeneration of kohlrabi, as well as in understanding the underlying phytohormonal regulation. The review aims to introduce kohlrabi to the scientific community as a model system for both basic and applied research, while we continue seeking answers to the outstanding questions and trying to pave the way for the development of more resistant varieties. Kohlrabi is a valuable crop due to its substantial amount of macro- and micronutrients. It is mostly consumed in fresh form, as jam or fermented product. This current work aimed to optimize the spontaneous fermentation conditions of kohlrabi in order to improve its product functionality and diversity. For this purpose, a Box Behnken design was employed to evaluate the effects of boiling time (0–8 min.), vinegar ratio (0–50%), and salt content (2–8%) on chemical and microbiological properties of fermented kohlrabi. Some chemical and microbiological analyses, including total phenolic content, total antioxidant capacity, total acidity, pH, salt content, total counts of yeast and molds, and mesophilic and lactic acid bacteria, were determined. The total antioxidant capacity of samples changed between 11.91 and 75.75 µmol Trolox/100 g, respectively. Both ANOVA results (p  <  0.05) and PCA model (R2  =  0.99; Q2  =  0.72) confirmed that boiling time is the important factor affecting the fermentation process. The optimal fermentation parameters for kohlrabi were determined to be 44.12% vinegar and 2.07% salt concentrations without the boiling step by response surface methodology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Different uses of Rosmarinus officinalis are known, and its volatile essential oil (EO) possess extensively investigated biological properties, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, anticancer, antiviral, antimicrobial, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, nephroprotective, antiulcer, and many others. The aim of our study was evaluating of antimicrobial activity of R. offi cinalis essential oil in vapor phase on apples, pears, kohlrabi, and potatoes. Fruits and vegetables models were tested with Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria, and yeasts. Together four bacterial strains (Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica, Yersinia enterocolitica, Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus) and four yeasts (Candida albicans, C. glabrata, C. krusei, and C. tropicalis) were tested in situ analyses. The most effective influence has ROEO has the most effective influence on on apples model against bacteria Enterococcus faecalis, and C. glabrata, on pears model Salmonella enterica and C. glabrata, on potatoes Yersinia enterocolitica, and C. glabrata, and on kohlrabi model Y. enterocolitica, and C. albicans. To explore the effect of low-temperature and low-salt fermentation on the volatile flavor substances of Chinese kohlrabi, low-temperature and low-salt fermented Chinese kohlrabi (LSCK) and traditional high-salt fermented Chinese kohlrabi (HSCK) were produced. The physicochemical and texture properties of the two kinds of Chinese kohlrabies were evaluated. Headspace gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) and electronic nose (E-nose) were used to analyze the volatile flavor substances of the kohlrabi. The results showed that the total acid content significantly decreased (p < 0.05), while protein and reducing sugar contents significantly increased (p < 0.05) by low-temperature and low-salt fermentation. A total of 114 volatile flavor substances were identified. The alcohol, ketone, pyrazine, ether, and nitrile contents in LSCK were significantly higher than those in HSCK (p < 0.05). Moreover, the unpleasant flavor from the 3-methylbutyric acid formation was effectively depressed in LSCK. The principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares discrimination analysis (OPLS-DA) models established by multivariate statistical analysis significantly distinguished the two types of kohlrabies. Multivariate statistical analysis suggested that 16 volatile flavor substances with VIP >1, including tetrahydrothiophene, ethyl 3-(methylthio)propanoate, 3-methylbutyric acid, hexanenitrile, and 3-methyl-3-buten-1-ol, could be used as potential biomarkers for identifying LSCK and HSCK. The E-nose analysis further demonstrated that there was a significant difference in overall flavor between the LSCK and HSCK. Many perishable vegetables are fermented in Himalayan region of India, and Kohlrabi, one of the most prominent cruciferous vegetables, is no exception. However, spontaneous fermentation causes a slew of issues in the marketing and storage of this fermented pickle. Continuous fermentation causes over-acidification, texture softening, unpleasant aroma and appearance. The purpose of the study was to examine at the influence of conventional heat and microwave treatment on desired quality parameters including pH, acidity, texture, microbial load, and sensory characteristics of fermented kohlrabi pickle over a 25-day storage period. Microwave-treated samples T1(2min), T2(2.5min), T3(3min), T4(3.5 min), and T5(4mins), as well as conventional heat-treated samples T6, T7, and T8(90 C for 5,10, and 15 min, respectively) and T9, T10, and T11(100 C for 5,10, and 15 min, respectively) were analyzed for various quality attributes over 25 days at regular intervals in comparison with controls (T0). The results indicated a significant difference among control and treated samples in terms of pH, acidity, texture, microbial load, and sensory score, The pH and acidity of all the samples showed significant differences when compared to control (pH-3.64; TA-1.41) at the end of storage period. Although both treatments considerably reduced LAB count as compared to control (8.21 log CFU/g), microwave treated samples, particularly T5, had a better control than conventional heat-treated samples. Texture study indicates that pickle hardness decreased over time, but microwave treated samples in general, and T5 in particular, showed a significant decrease in hardness value as compared to control and conventional heat-treated samples. The overall acceptability of samples T4, T5, and T11 were 6.37, 6.18, and 6.40 respectively, which varied significantly from other treated samples and control. From the present findings, it can be concluded that both the treatments could arrest/slowdown the growth of LAB in a fermented pickle. The establishment of an efficient protocol for in vitro growth and regeneration of kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes) allowed us to closely examine the phytohormone profiles of kohlrabi seedlings at four growth stages (T1–T4), additionally including the effects of cytokinins (CKs)—trans-zeatin (transZ) and thidiazuron (TDZ)—and high sucrose concentrations (6% and 9%). Resulting phytohormone profiles showed complex time-course patterns. At the T2 stage of control kohlrabi plantlets (with two emerged true leaves), levels of endogenous CK free bases and gibberellin GA20 increased, while increases in jasmonic acid (JA), JA-isoleucine (JA-Ile), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and indole-3-acetamide (IAM) peaked later, at T3. At the same time, the content of most of the analyzed IAA metabolites decreased. Supplementing growth media with CK induced de novo formation of shoots, while both CK and sucrose treatments caused important changes in most of the phytohormone groups at each developmental stage, compared to control. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that sucrose treatment, especially at 9%, had a stronger effect on the content of endogenous hormones than CK treatments. Correlation analysis showed that the dynamic balance between the levels of certain bioactive phytohormone forms and some of their metabolites could be lost or reversed at particular growth stages and under certain CK or sucrose treatments, with correlation values changing between strongly positive and strongly negative. Our results indicate that the kohlrabi phytohormonome is a highly dynamic system that changes greatly along the developmental time scale and also during de novo shoot formation, depending on exogenous factors such as the presence of growth regulators and different sucrose concentrations in the growth media, and that it interacts intensively with these factors to facilitate certain responses. Fermented kohlrabi is a very popular side dish in China. Chinese kohlrabies industrially fermented for 0 years (0Y), 5 years (5Y), and 10 years (10Y) were employed and analyzed by non-targeted metabolomics based on GC-TOF-MS, and the differential metabolites were screened using multivariate statistical analysis techniques, including principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares discrimination analysis (OPLS-DA). The results showed that 47, 38, and 33 differential metabolites were identified in the three treatment groups of 0Y and 5Y (A1), 0Y and 10Y (A2), and 5Y and 10Y (A3), respectively (VIP > 1, p < 0.05). The metabolites were mainly carbohydrates, amino acids, and organic acids. Furthermore, 13 differential metabolites were screened from the three groups, including L-glutamic acid, L-aspartic acid, γ-aminobutyric acid, and other compounds. Four metabolic pathways termed alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism, arginine biosynthesis, arginine and proline metabolism, and glycolysis/gluconeogenesis were the most significant pathways correlated with the differential metabolites, as analyzed according to the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG). The odors for the three ultra-long-term industrially fermented kohlrabies were significantly different, as detected by E-nose. The present work describes the changes in metabolites between different ultra-long-term industrially fermented kohlrabies and the associated metabolic pathways, providing a theoretical basis for the targeted regulation of characteristic metabolite biosynthesis in Chinese fermented kohlrabi. Biofertilizers and biostimulators have become alternative sources of plant nutrients. Biofertilizers derived from microalgae represent a new approach in plant production. The aim of the study was to examine the capacity of the microalgal cell suspension to improve germination and initial growth (root and shoot length) of white Icicle Radish (Raphanus sativus) and Kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes). By applying soil microalgal biofertilizer, initial growth was improved. Compared to the control, the root length of white radish was increased by 64.24% and 41.32%, using Chlorella sp. and Dictyosphaerium sp. cell suspension, respectively. Kohlrabi root growth was stimulated by application of Chlorella sp. and Dictyosphaerium sp. suspension by 60.97% and 55.02%, respectively. A significant difference in the shoot length was recorded, as well.

Background & Objective: Use of cover crops for controlling weeds is an environmental friendly alternative to conventional chemical and mechanical methods. Kohlrabi is a cool-season hardy crop which can be grown in early spring. The crop is well known in Europe and other regions as a health staple in human’s diets. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of using sunn hemp and rye cover crops as monoculture or mixed in controlling weeds and improving yield of kohlrabi. Materials & Method: A two-year field study was conducted. Experimental treatments consisted of monoculture rye (Secale cereal L.), sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea) and their mixture and no cover crop as control. Results: Cover crops biomass were 379.7 and 473.9 g.m-2 in first and second growing seasons, respectively. Averaged over two years, weed dry weight reduced by 52.6, 42.5 and 45.4 percentage in rye monoculture, sunn hemp monoculture, and mixed cover crops, respectively. Monoculture rye was more effective in suppressing the dominant weeds. Rye reduced lambsquarter, pigweed, and wild mustard by about 44, 60, and 52 percentage, respectively. On average, use of cover crops improved kohlrabi yield by 30%. Sunn hemp followed by mixed cover crops were more effective in kohlrabi yield improvement. Conclusion: Cover crops provide many ecological benefits. When weed suppression is the main goal of cover cropping, rye with fast growing habit and extensive root system is more efficient. However, legumes or mixture of legumes and grass are more effective in crop yield improvement.

A total of 114 volatile flavor substances were identified. The alcohol, ketone, pyrazine, ether, and nitrile contents in LSCK were significantly higher than those in HSCK (p < 0.05). Moreover, the unpleasant flavor from the 3-methylbutyric acid formation was effectively depressed in LSCK. The principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares discrimination analysis (OPLS-DA) models established by multivariate statistical analysis significantly distinguished the two types of kohlrabies. Multivariate statistical analysis suggested that 16 volatile flavor substances with VIP >1, including tetrahydrothiophene, ethyl 3-(methylthio)propanoate, 3-methylbutyric acid, hexanenitrile, and 3-methyl-3-buten-1-ol, could be used as potential biomarkers for identifying LSCK and HSCK. The E-nose analysis further demonstrated that there was a significant difference in overall flavor between the LSCK and HSCK. The present study provides support for the development of green processing technology and new low-salt Chinese kohlrabi products.

Transplanting kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes), a cool-season vegetable crop, in early spring may provide the opportunity for double cropping in short-season regions such as the Northeastern United States. A two-year field study evaluated the impacts of transplanting dates on yield and nutrient concentration of kohlrabi. Additionally, this study aimed to quantify the nutritional value of kohlrabi leaves. The yield of kohlrabi increased by as much as 307 kg ha−1 for each day transplanting was delayed. Soil temperature increased by 2.8 °C between April 23 and May 14, resulting in the increased accumulation of Ca, Cu, Mn, and Fe in kohlrabi bulbs and Ca and Cu in leaves. The nutrient concentration in leaf and bulb were positively correlated, indicating that the two commodities can be simultaneously harvested for optimum quality. Leaf yield was not significantly different among transplanting dates. However, the number of leaves and total leaf area increased with delayed transplanting. Leaf yield and leaf area were not correlated with bulb yield, suggesting that the reductions in yield and nutrient concentrations were unrelated to photosynthetic efficiency. Although the earlier transplanting of kohlrabi may have provided opportunities for double cropping, the yield and nutrient accumulation of kohlrabi transplanted early in the spring were considerably compromised. Kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes L.) is an important dietary rhizome vegetable in the Brassicaceae family. However, to date, few mitochondrial genomic resources have been reported for kohlrabi. In this study, we obtained the complete mitochondrial DNA sequence of 219,964 bp from an individual green kohlrabi. A total of 61 genes were annotated, including 33 protein-coding genes, 23 transfer RNA genes, three ribosomal RNA genes, and two pseudo genes. In addition, 1,001 open reading frames and five RNA editing sites were annotated. Relative synonymous codon usage analysis revealed significant difference in usage frequency of synonymous codon. Phylogenetic inference showed that kohlrabi is closely related to B. oleracea var. botrytis. This study provides a good foundation for further understanding the relationship and evolutionary origins among Brassicaceae crops.

Vegetables have been shown to be able to provide nutrients, including vitamins, minerals and especially fiber, and release toxins that arise during the digestion of food. As a result, the importance of vegetables has been increasingly emphasized in the human diet. In this study, Kohlrabi, a vitamin C-rich vegetable, was used for lactic fermentation. The whole process was optimized by varying a wide range of parameters including concentrations of salt solution and pH value on the growth of lactic acid bacteria, product texture and sensory characteristics. Current results revealed the optimal conditions for the fermentation process are as follows: NaCl solution used of 3.5%, initial pH 4.2, and MnCl2 with a concentration of 30 mM. The obtained Kohlrabi pickle products exhibited acceptable quality and good sensory scores after 2 days. Elevated temperature was also found to be associated with loss of hardness, quality loss and longer fermentation time. Optimized Kohlrabi pickling process will contribute to diversifying pickled vegetable products to avoid the defects caused by improper processing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The research was conducted on a private farm in Karbala province, Iraq during the winter season 2020 to study the effect of adding bio-fertilizer and spraying with potassium on the growth and yield of Kohlrabi. The experiment was conducted according to the split-plot system according to the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replicates and two factors and two factors, the first factor included biofertilizer at two levels (0, 1 g.Plant-1) and which were symbolized by (A0 and A1) and the second factor was potassium sulfate with three concentrations (0, 2, 4) g.L-1 and which were symbolized by (B0, B1, B2) spraying on the vegetative system. The results of the interaction between biofertilizer and spraying with potassium showed a significant effect on the vegetative growth traits and yield, where the treatment (1g.plant-1 biofertilizer with 4g.L-1 potassium spraying) gave the highest average in (plant height, modified stem content of NP and carbohydrates) amounted to 86.11 cm, 1.530%, 0.723%, 38.1 mg.100 g-1 dry weight, respectively compared to the control treatment that gave the lowest average 75.56 cm, 1.123%, 0.437%, 24.9 mg. 100 g-1 dry weight, respectively. While the treatment (1 g.plant-1 biofertilizer with 2 g.L-1 potassium) recorded the highest average in the weight of stem and yield in hectares amounted to 433 g, 34.81 tons.ha-1 compared with the control treatment that gave the lowest average of 288 g, 22.09 ton.ha-1. While the treatment of bio-fertilizer without adding with 2 g.L-1 potassium recorded the highest average in leaf area and the content of the stem of vitamin C reached 4187 cm2.plant-1, 3.268 mg. 100g-1 fresh weight compared with control treatment that gave the lowest average was 3185 cm² plant-1, 2.565 mg.100 g-1 fresh weight, where, the treatment of biofertilizer without adding and spraying with potassium achieved a concentration of 4 g.L-1 had the highest potassium content of the stem at 1.962% compared to the control treatment, which was 1.433%. Triacontanol (TRIA), an endogenous plant growth regulator, promotes various metabolic activities in plants, resulting in improved growth and development in kohlrabi. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of different doses of triacontanol on the growth and yield of kohlrabi. This study was carried out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with five replications at Purkot Daha, Gulmi, Nepal, from October 2020 to January 2021. The treatments consisted of four doses of triacontanol (Niraculan 0.05% EC) diluted in water viz 0 mL L−1 (control), 1 mL L−1, 1.5 mL L−1 and 2 mL L−1. The results showed that triacontanol application significantly increased plant height, number of leaves, leaf length, and width of the large leaf at 40 days after transplanting (DAT). Plants treated with triacontanol at the dose of 1 mL L−1 produced the highest plant height (14.61 cm), which was statistically at par with 0 mL L−1 (12.76 cm) and 2 mL L−1 (14.26 cm). Similarly, at 40 DAT, plants treated with triacontanol at the dose of 2 mL L−1 produced the highest number of leaves (5.56), which was statistically at par with 1 mL L−1 (5.4) and 1.5 mL L−1 (4.96). Likewise, at 40 DAT, the highest length of large leaf (13.95 cm) and width of the large leaf (5.09 cm) were found in plants treated with triacontanol at the dose of 1 mL L−1, which was statistically similar with 2 mL L−1. The yield was found to be higher (6.75% to 40.4%) in plants treated with triacontanol as compared to plants treated with triacontanol at the dose of 0 mL L−1. A significant difference was found in the harvest index. The highest harvest index (0.39) was found in plants treated with triacontanol at the dose of 2 mL L−1, which was statistically similar with 1 mL L−1 (0.35) and 1.5 mL L−1 (0.39). The lowest harvest index (0.31) was found in plants treated with 0 mL−1. This study suggests that farmers can apply triacontanol at the dose of 1 mL L−1 to enhance the growth and yield of kohlrabi.

The establishment of an efficient protocol for in vitro growth and regeneration of kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes) allowed us to closely examine the phytohormone profiles of kohlrabi seedlings at four growth stages (T1–T4), additionally including the effects of cytokinins (CKs)—trans-zeatin (transZ) and thidiazuron (TDZ)—and high sucrose concentrations (6% and 9%). Resulting phytohormone profiles showed complex time-course patterns. At the T2 stage of control kohlrabi plantlets (with two emerged true leaves), levels of endogenous CK free bases and gibberellin GA20 increased, while increases in jasmonic acid (JA), JA-isoleucine (JA-Ile), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and indole-3-acetamide (IAM) peaked later, at T3. At the same time, the content of most of the analyzed IAA metabolites decreased. Supplementing growth media with CK induced de novo formation of shoots, while both CK and sucrose treatments caused important changes in most of the phytohormone groups at each developmental stage, compared to control. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that sucrose treatment, especially at 9%, had a stronger effect on the content of endogenous hormones than CK treatments. Correlation analysis showed that the dynamic balance between the levels of certain bioactive phytohormone forms and some of their metabolites could be lost or reversed at particular growth stages and under certain CK or sucrose treatments, with correlation values changing between strongly positive and strongly negative. Our results indicate that the kohlrabi phytohormonome is a highly dynamic system that changes greatly along the developmental time scale and also during de novo shoot formation, depending on exogenous factors such as the presence of growth regulators and different sucrose concentrations in the growth media, and that it interacts intensively with these factors to facilitate certain responses.

Fermented kohlrabi is a very popular side dish in China. Chinese kohlrabies industrially fermented for 0 years (0Y), 5 years (5Y), and 10 years (10Y) were employed and analyzed by non-targeted metabolomics based on GC-TOF-MS, and the differential metabolites were screened using multivariate statistical analysis techniques, including principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least squares discrimination analysis (OPLS-DA). The results showed that 47, 38, and 33 differential metabolites were identified in the three treatment groups of 0Y and 5Y (A1), 0Y and 10Y (A2), and 5Y and 10Y (A3), respectively (VIP > 1, p < 0.05). The metabolites were mainly carbohydrates, amino acids, and organic acids. Furthermore, 13 differential metabolites were screened from the three groups, including L-glutamic acid, L-aspartic acid, γ-aminobutyric acid, and other compounds. Four metabolic pathways termed alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism, arginine biosynthesis, arginine and proline metabolism, and glycolysis/gluconeogenesis were the most significant pathways correlated with the differential metabolites, as analyzed according to the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG). The odors for the three ultra-long-term industrially fermented kohlrabies were significantly different, as detected by E-nose. The present work describes the changes in metabolites between different ultra-long-term industrially fermented kohlrabies and the associated metabolic pathways, providing a theoretical basis for the targeted regulation of characteristic metabolite biosynthesis in Chinese fermented kohlrabi.

From 2016 to 2018, approximately 15% of kohlrabi were observed displaying significant clubroot symptoms in farmer's fields in Jeju, Korea. The initial infection appeared as hypertrophy of root hairs, and as the disease progressed, galls formation occurred on the main roots, finally disease progress resulted in yellowing and wilting of leaves. Pathogenicity was proven by artificial inoculation of plants with resting spore suspension, fulfilling Koch's postulates. The resting spore is one-celled, spherical and subspherical, colorless, and 3-5 mm in diameter. On the basis of the morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses of internal transcribed spacer rDNA, the causal agent was identified as Plasmodiophora brassicae. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the occurrence of P. brassicae on kohlrabi in Korea.

Kohlrabi is used for consumption in various regions of the world as, raw, cooked or fried. Heat and mass transfer phenomena take place during frying cause physicochemical changes, which affect the color and surface of the fried products. The effect of frying temperature on the color changes and center temperature change during deep fat frying of kohlrabi was investigated. The color scale parameters redness (a*), yellowness (b*) and lightness (L*), and color change intensity (∆E) were used to estimate color changes during frying as a function of oil temperature and time. L* value of fried kohlrabi decreased during frying but a* and b* values were increased. A first-order kinetic equation was used for each one of the three color parameters, in which the rate constant is a function of oil temperatures. The results showed that oil temperature has a significant effect on the color parameters. Different kinetic models were used to fit the experimental data, and the results revealed that the power model was the most suitable to describe the color change intensity (∆E). Center temperature of kohlrabi slice increased with an increase in oil temperature and time during frying.

The research reveals a versatile positive effect of organic bio stimulants Regoplant, Stimpo, and Emochka on kohlrabi cabbage plants. Soaking the seeds for 12 hours and foliar dressing of plants during vegetation with solutions of growth regulators contributed not only to increase the total yield of stems but also to enhancing growth indices of kohlrabi plants and at the same time ensuring better resistance to adverse growing conditions. The highest yield was obtained for the soaking seeds for 12 hours and 2 foliar dressings. Thus, in kohlrabi varieties 'Delikatesna Bila' and 'Violeta', the highest yield of stems (23.9-25.2 t/ha) was obtained under the influence of growth regulators Regoplant and Stimpo. In the experiment, a high yield of commodity stems was obtained in variety 'Delikatesna Bila' (86-93%) and in variety 'Violeta' (86-91%), which was on average higher by 8.0 and 5.6% than in the control treatment. The use of biostimulants ensured the yield of soluble dry matter higher by 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.8%in'Delikatesna Bila' and by 0.8%, 1.0%, 0.3% in 'Violeta', respectively, compared to the control treatment. Cross-talk between phytohormones and sugars is intensely involved in plant metabolism, growth and regeneration. We documented alterations in cytokinin (CK) homeostasis in four developmental stages during de novo shoot organogenesis (DNSO) of kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes cv. Vienna Purple) seedlings induced by exogenous CKs, trans-zeatin (transZ) and thidiazuron (TDZ), added together with elevated sucrose concentration (6% and 9%). Significant impact of CK and sucrose treatment and their interaction was recorded in all investigated stages, including plantlet development before calli formation (T1 and T2), calli formation (T3) and shoot regeneration (T4). Results showed remarkable increase in total CK levels for transZ treatment, particularly with 9% sucrose. This trend was observed for all physiological and structural groups of CKs. Application of TDZ contributed to little or no increase in CK levels regardless of sucrose concentration. Analysis of expression profiles of organogenesis-related genes involved in auxin transport, CK response, shoot apical meristem formation and cell division revealed that higher sugar concentration significantly downregulated the analysed genes, particularly in T3. This continued on TDZ, but transZ induced an opposite effect with 9% sucrose in T4, increasing gene activity. Kohlrabi sprouts are just gaining popularity as the new example of functional food. The study was focused on the influence of germination time and light conditions on glucosinolates, phenolic acids, flavonoids, and fatty acids content in kohlrabi sprouts, in comparison to the bulbs. The effect of kohlrabi products on SW480, HepG2 and BJ cells was also determined. The length of sprouting time and light availability significantly influenced the concentrations of the phenolic compounds. Significant differences in progoitrin concentrations were observed between the sprouts harvested in light and in the darkness, with significantly lower content for darkness conditions. Erucic acid was the dominant fatty acid found in sprouts (14.5-34.5%). Sprouts and bulbs were less toxic to normal than to cancer cells. The sprouts stimulated necrosis (56.4%) more than apoptosis (34.1%) in SW480 cells, while the latter effect was predominant for the bulbs. Both sprouts and bulbs caused rather necrosis (45.5 and 63.9%) than apoptosis (32 and 32.5%) in HepG2 cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ultraviolet-B (UV-B; 280–315 nm) radiation induces the biosynthesis of secondary plant metabolites such as flavonoids. Flavonoids could also be enhanced by blue (420–490 nm) or green (490–585 nm) light. Flavonoids act as antioxidants and shielding components in the plant’s response to UV-B exposure. They are shown to quench singlet oxygen and to be reactive to hydroxyl radical. The aim was to determine whether treatment with blue or green light can alter flavonoid profiles after pre-exposure to UV-B and whether they cause corresponding biological effects in Brassicaceae sprouts. Based on their different flavonoid profiles, three vegetables from the Brassicaceae were selected. Sprouts were treated with five subsequent doses (equals 5 days) of moderate UV-B (0.23 kJ m–2 day–1 UV-BBE), which was followed with two subsequent (equals 2 days) doses of either blue (99 μmol m–2 s–1) or green (119 μmol m–2 s–1) light. In sprouts of kale, kohlrabi, and rocket salad, flavonoid glycosides were identified by HPLC-DAD-ESI-MSn. Both Brassica oleracea species, kale and kohlrabi, showed mainly acylated quercetin and kaempferol glycosides. In contrast, in rocket salad, the main flavonol glycosides were quercetin glycosides. Blue light treatment after the UV-B treatment showed that quercetin and kaempferol glycosides were increased in the B. oleracea species kale and kohlrabi while—contrary to this—in rocket salad, there were only quercetin glycosides increased. Blue light treatment in general stabilized the enhanced concentrations of flavonoid glycosides while green treatment did not have this effect. Blue light treatment following the UV-B exposure resulted in a trend of increased singlet oxygen scavenging for kale and rocket. The hydroxyl radical scavenging capacity was independent from the light quality except for kale where an exposure with UV-B followed by a blue light treatment led to a higher hydroxyl radical scavenging capacity. These results underline the importance of different light qualities for the biosynthesis of reactive oxygen species that intercept secondary plant metabolites, but also show a pronounced species-dependent reaction, which is of special interest for growers.

An experiment was conducted at the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Gardening, College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences, University of Baghdad, Iraq during the autumn season of 2017. The objectives of this research were to study the effects of different mineral fertilizers and root enhancers on the growth and yield of kohlrabi plants. The effects of five fertilizer treatments viz., Control - 25% of recommended dose of fertilizer (RDF); RDF (100 kg N/ha, 120 kg P2O5/ha and 120 kg K2O/ha; 25% RDF with adding of high nitrogen (FAN) NPK fertilizer (30:10:10); 25% RDF with adding of high phosphorus (FAP) NPK fertilizer (13:40:13) and 25% RDF with adding of high potassium (FAK) NPK fertilizer (15:5:30) and three root enhancer treatments viz., Control (No root enhancer); Inicium @ 1 ml/L and Disper @ 1 ml/L. The experiment was laid out in factorial experiment with randomized complete blocks design (RCBD), with three replications. The results showed that 25% RDF with FAN treatment of fertilizers excelled significantly better compared to other treatments for the vegetative growth traits represented by plant height (68.57 cm), number of leaves/plant (19.53), leaf area/plant (906.50 cm2) and dry weight/plant (236.60 g). The root enhancer inicium @ 1 ml/L produced significantly higher plant height, number of leaves/plant, leaf area/plant and dry weight/plant amounting to 67.18 cm, 18.60, 854.90 cm2 and 226.14 g, respectively compared to control where no root enhancer was applied. The interaction of 25% RDF with FAK x Inicium @ 1ml/L gave significantly higher stem diameter (10.21 cm), stem weight (465.70 g) and stem yield (27.32 t/ha) of the kohlrabi plant compared to other treatments. Kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea L. var. gongylodes L.) was biofortified with selenium (Se), as selenite and selenate, and iodine (I), as iodide and iodate, and their combinations through foliar spraying, to study absorption of these elements by the plants, separately and in combination. The effects on selected physiological and morphological traits and optical characteristics were monitored. Treatments with Se positively affected total chlorophylls and carotenoids, and leaf stomata dimensions. Addition of I decreased total chlorophylls and increased anthocyanins. In reflectance spectra of the leaves, specific colour regions differed significantly due to the different treatments. Reflectance in the UV correlated positively with Se and I contents of the leaves, which indicated lower demand for production of phenolic compounds. Differences in reflectance in UV part of the spectra could be a consequence of changes in the cuticle. The Se and I levels increased markedly in leaves and tubers, without loss of biomass or yield. Se had antagonistic effects on accumulation of I in leaves. The similar levels of Se and I in the leaves and tubers suggest that the transport of both elements in these plants occurs from the leaves to the tubers through the phloem. According to the Se and I contents in the kohlrabi tubers, biofortification with both elements simultaneously is feasible for human nutrition. • I and Se affect the biochemical and anatomical characteristics of treated kohlrabi. • I and Se increase reflectance in different part of the spectra. • Increased reflectance in UV part could be due to changes in the cuticle. • It is feasible to add I and Se to kohlrabi simultaneously. The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of kohlrabi and broccoli sprouts added to the diet on the concentrations of short-chain fatty acids in feces samples of rats with thyroid dysfunction. Two models of hypothyroidism were used. The first one was based on the diet with iodine deficiency and the second by sulfadimethoxine addition to the animal drinking water. In most cases, the concentrations of acetic acid, propanoic acid and butanoic acid in stool samples obtained from rats with thyroid dysfunction were insignificantly lower than found in the control group. Moreover, almost in all cases the diet enriched with brassica sprouts insignificantly increased the concentration of fatty acids in investigated material. A significant positive correlation between concentrations of butanoic and acetic acids was found in different groups of rats. In conclusion, the addition of broccoli or kohlrabi sprouts in ratís diet may slightly alleviate the decline of concentrations of some fatty acids in the stool of animals with thyroid dysfunction. • Car-based active/intelligent films were prepared with Zn-CD/KA nanofillers. • Films with Zn-CD/KA presented excellent antioxidant and antimicrobial efficacy. • Significant activity for on-site freshness monitoring of shrimp. • The Car/KA@Zn-CD films efficiently extended the shelf life of shrimp. Carrageenan-based active/intelligent packaging films containing anthocyanin and ZnO-doped CD (Zn-CD) from purple Kohlrabi peels were prepared for freshness monitoring and shelf-life extension of shrimp, and the influence of additives on the films' physical, functional, and structural properties was investigated. The films showed excellent UV blocking ability (85.2% of UV-A and 99.4% of UV-B) and high antioxidant effect (∼99% for ABTS and ∼ 58.6% for DPPH radical scavenging activity) and showed strong antibacterial activity to stop the growth (100%) of L. monocytogenes and to reduce the growth of E. coli by 8.1 log CFU/mL after 12 h of incubation. In shrimp packaging experiments, the films were evident in the freshness monitoring, reduced spoilage, and increased shelf life. This study suggests that next-generation biopolymer films impregnated with biomass-derived CDs and natural colorants will provide broad directions for ensuring safety and extending shelf life to meet the accelerating demand for packaging products. Kale (Brassica oleracea L. var. sabellica L.), kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea L. var. gongylodes L.) and wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Bancal) microgreens were cultivated in presence of selenium 20 μmol L−1 as sodium selenite and sodium selenate mixture. The influence of this biofortification process was evaluated in terms of biomass production, total Se, macro- and micronutrients concentration, polyphenols, antioxidant activity, chlorophylls and carotenoids levels and total soluble proteins content. The results obtained have shown a significant concentration of total Se in the biofortified microgreens of kale (133 μg Se·g−1 DW) and kohlrabi (127 μg Se·g−1 DW) higher than that obtained for wheat (28 μg Se·g−1 DW). The Se uptake in all the species did not produce oxidative damage to the plants reflected in the bioactive compounds, antioxidant capacity or pigments concentration. These Se-enriched microgreens may contribute to the recommended intake of this nutrient in human diet as to overcome Se-deficiency. Pickled kohlrabi is a traditional and favored vegetable product in China. During pickling, the hardness, springiness, and chewiness of kohlrabi all experienced a typical change with twice "increase-decrease" trend. However, little is known about its mechanism. In this study, in situ analysis including immunofluorescence, low field nuclear magnetic, and transmission electron microscopy were used to explore the effects of cell wall pectin, water state, and cellular structure on kohlrabi texture changes during pickling. Results revealed that at the early stage, due to the rapid loss of water after three times salting, the cells shrank and the interstitial space reduced, resulting in the first increase on kohlrabi texture. Subsequently, the dehydration-rehydration caused by the first brine processing resulted in the first decrease on kohlrabi texture. Then under the action of PME enzyme, more low-esterified pectin was produced, and chelate-soluble pectin with more branched structure was further formed, leading to another elevation of the sample texture. As the pickling continued, under the combined action of PG and PME, the molecular weight of pectin was decreased and the rigidity of the cell tissue was destroyed, caused kohlrabi texture continued to decline. Kohlrabi is considered an important dietary vegetable worldwide. In this study, we investigated the growth and accumulation of phenolic compounds (PCs) and glucosinolates in sprouts of pale green and purple kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes) in response to light and dark conditions. Pale green kohlrabi presented high fresh weight and root length irrespective of light treatment, whereas under dark conditions, it presented higher fresh weight and shoot length than purple kohlrabi. In contrast, the root length of both kohlrabies increased markedly under light conditions compared to that under dark conditions. Thirteen PCs and eight glucosinolates were detected and quantified in 10-day-old pale green and purple kohlrabies. In both kohlrabies, the individual and total phenolic levels were much higher under the light treatment than under the dark treatment. Under light and dark conditions, the total phenolic content was 6362.13 and 5475.04 µg/g dry weight in the pale green kohlrabi, respectively, whereas in the purple kohlrabi, it was 10,115.76 and 9361.74 µg/g dry weight, respectively. Dark conditions favored higher accumulation of glucosinolates than light conditions. Progoitrin, neoglucobrassicin, glucoerucin, and 4-methoxyglucobrassicin were the predominant glucosinolates in both kohlrabies and were present in much higher amounts in the pale green kohlrabi. In pale green kohlrabi under dark conditions, the total glucosinolates content was 4.75 and 2.62 times higher than that of the purple kohlrabi under light and dark conditions, respectively. Among individual glucosinolates, in the pale green kohlrabi under the dark condition, progoitrin was found to have the highest content, which was 90.28 and 54.51 times higher than that in the purple kohlrabi under light and dark conditions, respectively. These results show that the phenolic and glucosinolates levels varied widely, and these variations between the two types of kohlrabi under both light and dark conditions were significant. Our findings suggest that light and dark conditions enhance the accumulation of PCs and glucosinolates, respectively, during the development of kohlrabi seedlings.
