Midline thalamic nuclei play a critical role in cognitive functions such as memory, decision-making and spatial navigation, by facilitating communication between the many brain regions involved in these processes. One canonical feature of thalamic interactions with the cortex or hippocampus appears to be that the thalamus receives input from, and projects to, excitatory neurons. Thalamic nucleus reuniens (NRe) is located on the midline and is viewed primarily as a relay from prefrontal cortex to hippocampal and entorhinal areas, although these connections are poorly defined at the cellular and synaptic level. Using electrophysiology and monosynaptic circuit-tracing, we found that pyramidal cells in CA1 receive no direct input from NRe. This contrasts starkly with prefrontal cortex, subiculum and entorhinal cortex, and indicates that NRe inputs to CA1 primarily drive local inhibition and not excitation they do in the other regions. The NRe to CA1 projection is thus a unique thalamic projection and as such is raising important questions about the function of NRe-mediated prefrontal control of the hippocampus.

One of the main features of Alzheimer’s disease is the progressive loss of memory, likely due to pathological changes within brain regions such as the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex. These structures are embedded within the extended memory circuit, an interconnected set of brain regions that are essential for episodic memory. The anterior thalamic nuclei (ATN) and thalamic nucleus reuniens (NRe) are both extensively and reciprocally connected with these important memory regions, so we sought to test the hypothesis that chemogenetically-enhancing neurotransmission through NRe and ATN would ameliorate memory deficits in two mechanistically-distinct mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease. Using the hAPP-J20 mouse model of amyloidopathy and the Tg4510 mouse model of tauopathy, we carried out stereotaxic injections of viral vectors to transduce hM3Dq (Gq)_mCherry into NRe or the anterio-dorsal/anterio-ventral nuclei of ATN, using mCherry as a control. At nine months (hAPP-J20) or six months (Tg4510) of age, mice underwent a behaviour battery of open field (OF), novel object recognition (NOR) and radial arm maze (RAM), with DREADD agonist 21 administered 30min prior to each behaviour test. Tissue was collected post-behaviour to confirm injection site and virus expression. Both Tg4510 and hAPP-J20 mice show marked hyperactivity in the OF, significant deficits in recognition memory, and a significant impairment in spatial reference and spatial working memory. Unexpectedly, chemogenetic activation of ATN or NRe did not significantly improve spatial memory impairments or reduce the observed hyperactivity, although NRe activation did modestly rescue recognition memory in J20 mice. This may be due to compensation elsewhere within the memory circuit, or that the pathological changes are too far advanced for behaviour reversal.

Background: Hormonal changes in females may affect physiology of the entire body including the oral cavity. The present study aimed to evaluate salivary flow rate, ph, buffering capacity, calcium and total protein levels in pregnant and non pregnant women. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was designed and thirty pregnant and 30 non pregnant women women aged between 19-34 years in the third trimester were included in the study. The salivary samples were collected between 9- 11.30 a.m in both the study and control group. The salivary flow, pH, and buffering capacity was measured using “Saliva-check buffer kit. Results: Salivary flow rate, pH has decreased in pregnancy than non pregnant women. DMFT index showed a strong correlation with pH in pregnant women (P = 0.002) and nonpregnant women (P = 0.01). Calcium and protein level decreases in pregnant women in comparison to non pregnant women but difference was statistically non significant. Conclusion: Even though the salivary parameters were observed in normal range but there were definitive alterations.

Social marketing is a commonly used strategy in global health. Social marketing programmes may sell subsidized products through commercial sector outlets, distribute appropriately priced products, deliver health services through social franchises and promote behaviours not dependent upon a product or service. We aimed to review evidence of the effectiveness of social marketing in low- and middle-income countries, focusing on major areas of investment in global health: HIV, reproductive health, child survival, malaria and tuberculosis. We searched PubMed, PsycInfo and ProQuest, using search terms linking social marketing and health outcomes for studies published from 1995 to 2013. Eligible studies used experimental or quasi-experimental designs to measure outcomes of behavioural factors, health behaviours and/or health outcomes in each health area. Studies were analysed by effect estimates and for application of social marketing benchmark criteria. After reviewing 18 974 records, 125 studies met inclusion criteria. Across health areas, 81 studies reported on changes in behavioural factors, 97 studies reported on changes in behaviour and 42 studies reported on health outcomes. The greatest number of studies focused on HIV outcomes (n = 45) and took place in sub-Saharan Africa (n = 67). Most studies used quasi-experimental designs and reported mixed results. Child survival had proportionately the greatest number of studies using experimental designs, reporting health outcomes, and reporting positive, statistically significant results. Most programmes used a range of methods to promote behaviour change. Programmes with positive, statistically significant findings were more likely to apply audience insights and cost-benefit analyses to motivate behaviour change. Key evidence gaps were found in voluntary medical male circumcision and childhood pneumonia. Social marketing can influence health behaviours and health outcomes in global health; however evaluations assessing health outcomes remain comparatively limited. Global health investments are needed to (i) fill evidence gaps, (ii) strengthen evaluation rigour and (iii) expand effective social marketing approaches.

The 2018 Lake Louise Acute Mountain Sickness Score. High Alt Med Biol 19:1–4, 2018.— The Lake Louise Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) scoring system has been a useful research tool since first published in 1991. Recent studies have shown that disturbed sleep at altitude, one of the five symptoms scored for AMS, is more likely due to altitude hypoxia per se, and is not closely related to AMS. To address this issue, and also to evaluate the Lake Louise AMS score in light of decades of experience, experts in high altitude research undertook to revise the score. We here present an international consensus statement resulting from online discussions and meetings at the International Society of Mountain Medicine World Congress in Bolzano, Italy, in May 2014 and at the International Hypoxia Symposium in Lake Louise, Canada, in February 2015. The consensus group has revised the score to eliminate disturbed sleep as a questionnaire item, and has updated instructions for use of the score.
