1. Age-Related Variation in Change-of-Direction Performance and Deficit Among Late Childhood Boys

Abstract

Effective coaching strategies for enhancing change-of-direction (COD) ability in older elementary school boys require innovative assessment approaches due to the pivotal role of this skill in motor control programs. We aimed to (a) conduct a cross-sectional comparison of differences in COD total time (CODT) and COD deficit (CODD) according to chronological age among boys aged 10–12 years and (b) investigate the association of CODT and CODD with height, body mass, and jumping ability. Seventy-eight Japanese boys with chronological age 10–12 years (10.0–10.9 years, n=26; 11.0–11.9 years, n=26; 12.0–12.9 years, n=26) performed 20-m sprint, 505COD, counter-movement jump (CMJ), and rebound jump (RJ) tests; their height and body mass were recorded. Unpaired one-way ANOVA was used to compare each variable between the three groups. CODT (F(2, 75) = 6.21, p = 0.003) and 10-m time (F(2, 75) = 9.49, p = 0.001) were significantly shorter in 12-year-olds than in 10-year-olds; however, no significant differences were observed in CODD, CMJ, and RJ-index. Regarding partial correlation coefficients, CODT showed a significant positive correlation with CODD and 20-m time (r = 0.67 to 0.76, p = 0.001) and a significant negative correlation with CMJ, RJ-index, and RJ-height (r = -0.43 to -0.53, p = 0.001). CODD demonstrated a significant positive correlation with height (r = 0.29, p = 0.011), body mass (r = 0.30, p = 0.008), and sprint momentum (r = 0.28, p = 0.013). These findings suggest that regarding CODD, the development of COD ability did not vary with age, indicating its association with morphological growth. Therefore, COD training should be provided according to children’s morphological and linear sprint speed development.

Abstract

Abstract Thermotolerance in Mucorales (Mucoromycotina) is one of the factors to be opportunistic pathogens, causing mucormycosis. Among thermotolerant mucoralean fungi, Burkholderiaceae-related endobacteria (BRE) are rarely found and the known range of hosts is limited to Rhizopus spp. The phylogenetic divergence of BRE has recently expanded in other fungal groups such as Mortierellaceae spp. (Mortierellomycotina); however, it remains unexplored in Mucorales. Here, we found a thermotolerant mucoralean fungus obtained from a litter sample collected from Haha-jima Island in the Ogasawara (Bonin) Islands, Japan. The fungus was morphologically, phylogenetically, and physiologically characterized and proposed as a new species, Saksenaea boninensis sp. nov. Besides the fungal taxonomy, we also found the presence of BRE in isolates of this species by diagnostic PCR amplification of the 16S rRNA gene from mycelia, fluorescence microscopic observations, and isolation of the bacterium in pure culture. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene of BRE revealed that it is distinct from all known BRE. The discovery of a culturable BRE lineage in the genus Saksenaea will add new insight into the evolutional origin of mucoralean fungus-BRE associations and emphasize the need to pay more attention to endofungal bacteria potentially associated with isolates of thermotolerant mucoralean fungi causing mucormycosis.

Computed tomography and bronchoscopy are recommended for diagnosis. In this case, the patient's cough was ameliorated after undergoing a right basal segmentectomy.

Abstract

By using Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar, a range-angle map can be obtained that displays the signal strength in two dimensions with respect to distance and angular directions. In this process, a threshold algorithm such as Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) is used to detect positions where the signal strength exceeds a certain threshold value, enabling position estimation of targets. Furthermore, a method has been proposed to use the curve length of the trajectory of the I/Q signal to emphasize the signal of the person’s position on the range angle map. However, the conventional CFAR may cause false alarms when noise and clutter signals are strong. In this paper, we propose a new method for human location estimation using the MIMO FMCW radar. Comparing the reflected signals from people and clutter, we see that I/Q signal variations associated with human motion have little correlation with clutter from stationary objects or noise, and I/Q signal variations associated with clutter often have high correlation with signals at other positions. We focus on the fact that there are many positions where the clutter component signal has a high correlation, compared to the signal caused by a person. Using the correlation map that expresses the correlation between the received I/Q signals on the range-angle plane, we evaluated the characteristics of noise and clutter components from walls on the correlation map by standard deviation. As a result, we can remove strong noise and clutter components caused from near walls, thus improving the accuracy of object location estimation.

Abstract

Abstract Our world is full of uncertainty. Animals, including humans, need to behave flexibly to adjust to ever-changing environments. Reversal learning tasks have been used to assess behavioral flexibility in many species. However, there are some limitations in the traditional free-moving methodology, including (1) sessions to train the animals, (2) within-session number of trials associated with reversals, (3) factors of physical movement unrelated to the task in the maze or operant box, and (4) incompatibility with techniques, such as two-photon imaging. Therefore, to address these limitations, we established a novel spatiotemporal Pavlovian head-fixed reversal learning task for mice. Six experimentally naive adult C57BL/6J mice were used in this study. First, we trained head-fixed mice on a fixed-time schedule task. Sucrose solution was delivered every 10 s with a single drinking spout placed within the licking distance of the mice. After the mice showed anticipatory licking toward the timing of sucrose solution delivery, we began training the mice on the fixed-time schedule reversal learning task with two licking spouts. In this task, sucrose solution was delivered through one of the two drinking spouts. The rewarding spout was switched every 10 trials. Mice quickly learned to switch anticipatory licking to the rewarding side of the spouts, suggesting that they learned this head-fixed reversal learning task. Using the head-fixed experimental design, behavioral measures can be simplified by eliminating the complex behavioral sequences observed in free-moving animals. This novel head-fixed reversal learning task is a useful assay for studying the neurobiological mechanism of behavioral flexibility that is impaired in various psychopathological conditions.

8. A Robust Approach Assisted by Signal Quality Assessment for Fetal Heart Rate Estimation from Doppler Ultrasound Signal

Abstract

Fetal heart rate (FHR) monitoring, typically using Doppler ultrasound (DUS) signals, is an important technique for assessing fetal health. In this work, we develop a robust DUS-based FHR estimation approach complemented by DUS signal quality assessment (SQA) based on unsupervised representation learning in response to the drawbacks of previous DUS-based FHR estimation and DUS SQA methods. We improve the existing FHR estimation algorithm based on the autocorrelation function (ACF), which is the most widely used method for estimating FHR from DUS signals. Short-time Fourier transform (STFT) serves as a signal pre-processing technique that allows the extraction of both temporal and spectral information. In addition, we utilize double ACF calculations, employing the first one to determine an appropriate window size and the second one to estimate the FHR within changing windows. This approach enhances the robustness and adaptability of the algorithm. Furthermore, we tackle the challenge of low-quality signals impacting FHR estimation by introducing a DUS SQA method based on unsupervised representation learning. We employ a variational autoencoder (VAE) to train representations of pre-processed fetal DUS data and aggregate them into a signal quality index (SQI) using a self-organizing map (SOM). By incorporating the SQI and Kalman filter (KF), we refine the estimated FHRs, minimizing errors in the estimation process. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed approach outperforms conventional methods in terms of accuracy and robustness.

Abstract

Future GRACE-like geodesy missions could benefit from adopting accelerometer technology akin to that of the LISA Pathfinder, which employed laser interferometric readout at the sub-picometer level in addition to the conventional capacitive sensing, which is at best at the level of 100 pm. Improving accelerometer performance holds great potential to enhance the scientific output of forthcoming missions, carrying invaluable implications for research in climate, water resource management, and disaster risk reduction. To reach sub-picometer displacement sensing precision in the millihertz range, laser interferometers rely on suppression of laser-frequency noise by several orders of magnitude. Many optical frequency stabilization methods are available with varying levels of complexity, size, and performance. In this paper, we describe the performance of a Mach–Zehnder interferometer based on a compact monolithic optic. The setup consists of a commercial fiber injector, a custom-designed pentaprism used to split and recombine the laser beam, and two photoreceivers placed at the complementary output ports of the interferometer. The structural stability of the prism is transferred to the laser frequency via amplification, integration, and feedback of the balanced-detection signal, achieving a fractional frequency instability better than 6 parts in 1013, corresponding to an interferometer pathlength stability better than 1pm/Hz. The prism was designed to host a second interferometer to interrogate the position of a test mass. This optical scheme has been dubbed “single-element dual-interferometer” or SEDI.

Abstract

The third Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog (GWTC-3) describes signals detected with Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo up to the end of their third observing run. Updating the previous GWTC-2.1, we present candidate gravitational waves from compact binary coalescences during the second half of the third observing run (O3b) between 1 November 2019, 15∶00 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and 27 March 2020, 17∶00 UTC. There are 35 compact binary coalescence candidates identified by at least one of our search algorithms with a probability of astrophysical origin p_{astro}>0.5. Of these, 18 were previously reported as low-latency public alerts, and 17 are reported here for the first time. Based upon estimates for the component masses, our O3b candidates with p_{astro}>0.5 are consistent with gravitational-wave signals from binary black holes or neutron-star–black-hole binaries, and we identify none from binary neutron stars. However, from the gravitational-wave data alone, we are not able to measure matter effects that distinguish whether the binary components are neutron stars or black holes. The range of inferred component masses is similar to that found with previous catalogs, but the O3b candidates include the first confident observations of neutron-star–black-hole binaries. Including the 35 candidates from O3b in addition to those from GWTC-2.1, GWTC-3 contains 90 candidates found by our analysis with p_{astro}>0.5 across the first three observing runs. These observations of compact binary coalescences present an unprecedented view of the properties of black holes and neutron stars.

Abstract

Heartbeat detection could enable various applications in the medical and health care fields. In particular, non-contact heartbeat detection can be acceptable for those who have difficulty wearing devices, such as burn patients and infants. A Doppler sensor could be a key device to realize heartbeat detection without any wearable devices. Many researches in recent years have focused on heartbeat detection using a Doppler sensor with a single beam Doppler sensor. However, when the SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) of heartbeat components is low for the beam direction, the heartbeat detection accuracy is likely to degrade. In this paper, for more accurate heartbeat detection, we propose a heartbeat detection method based on beam diversity using a multibeam Doppler sensor. Through the preliminary experiments, we clarified that the SNRs of heartbeat components differ from one beam to another. This means that when the SNR is low for one beam, the SNR could be high for the other beams. Inspired by this fact, the proposed method extracts heartbeat components from all peaks detected by the multi-beam signals. To verify the heartbeat detection accuracy of our method, we conducted the experiments for different detection ranges. The obtained results show that compared to the conventional methods using a single beam, our proposed method using multibeam detected heartbeat more accurately. This indicates the benefit of exploiting beam diversity, i.e., the heartbeat detection accuracy can be improved by utilizing beam diversity.

Abstract

β-D-glucan is extensively employed as a supplementary diagnostic tool for Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) and typically yields positive results in most cases.We present a case of a 73-year-old woman with a history of rheumatoid arthritis, who was receiving biological agents and was admitted due to pneumonia.Initially, the β-D-glucan test was negative. However, as the disease progressed, it eventually turned positive, leading to the diagnosis of PCP. The patient was treated with corticosteroids and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, resulting in pneumonia resolution.Our findings suggest that repeated assessment of β-D-glucan levels holds diagnostic value in patients without human immunodeficiency virus infection.

Abstract

Abstract Aims/Introduction Sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors, as well as thiazolidines, suppress nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD); however, few comparative studies have been reported. Dapagliflozin has shown non‐inferiority compared with pioglitazone for glycemic control, and superiority regarding weight reduction in patients with type 2 diabetes. We carried out a secondary analysis for the favorable effects of sodium–glucose cotransporter inhibitors for NAFLD. Materials and Methods In this multicenter, open‐label, prospective, randomized, parallel‐group comparison trial, patients taking pioglitazone for ≥12 weeks were randomly switched to dapagliflozin or continued pioglitazone for a further 24 weeks. The fatty liver index (FLI), consisting of body mass index, triglycerides, waist circumference and γ‐glutamyl transpeptidase, was used for the evaluation of NAFLD. Results A total of 53 participants with NAFLD (27 dapagliflozin; 26 pioglitazone) were included in this analysis. FLI decreased significantly in the dapagliflozin group (48.7 ± 23.4 to 42.1 ± 23.9) compared with the pioglitazone group (49.0 ± 26.1 to 51.1 ± 25.8; P

Abstract

We report on the population properties of compact binary mergers inferred from gravitational-wave observations of these systems during the first three LIGO-Virgo observing runs. The Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog 3 (GWTC-3) contains signals consistent with three classes of binary mergers: binary black hole, binary neutron star, and neutron star–black hole mergers. We infer the binary neutron star merger rate to be between 10 and 1700 Gpc^{−3} yr^{−1} and the neutron star–black hole merger rate to be between 7.8 and 140 Gpc^{−3} yr^{−1}, assuming a constant rate density in the comoving frame and taking the union of 90% credible intervals for methods used in this work. We infer the binary black hole merger rate, allowing for evolution with redshift, to be between 17.9 and 44 Gpc^{-3} yr^{-1} at a fiducial redshift (z=0.2). The rate of binary black hole mergers is observed to increase with redshift at a rate proportional to (1+z)^{κ} with κ=2.9_{-1.8}^{+1.7} for z≲1. Using both binary neutron star and neutron star–black hole binaries, we obtain a broad, relatively flat neutron star mass distribution extending from 1.2_{-0.2}^{+0.1} to 2.0_{-0.3}^{+0.3}M_{⊙}. We confidently determine that the merger rate as a function of mass sharply declines after the expected maximum neutron star mass, but cannot yet confirm or rule out the existence of a lower mass gap between neutron stars and black holes. We also find the binary black hole mass distribution has localized over- and underdensities relative to a power-law distribution, with peaks emerging at chirp masses of 8.3_{-0.5}^{+0.3} and 27.9_{-1.8}^{+1.9}M_{⊙}. While we continue to find that the mass distribution of a binary’s more massive component strongly decreases as a function of primary mass, we observe no evidence of a strongly suppressed merger rate above approximately 60M_{⊙}, which would indicate the presence of a upper mass gap. Observed black hole spins are small, with half of spin magnitudes below χ_{i}≈0.25. While the majority of spins are preferentially aligned with the orbital angular momentum, we infer evidence of antialigned spins among the binary population. We observe an increase in spin magnitude for systems with more unequal-mass ratio. We also observe evidence of misalignment of spins relative to the orbital angular momentum.

Abstract

Heartbeat detection is one of key techniques to monitor our health condition in daily life, and demands for this technique have increased year and year. Thanks to the non-contact and non-invasive features, various Doppler sensor-based detection methods have been investigated so far. However, the heartbeat detection accuracy of the conventional methods could get degraded due to the low SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio) of heartbeat components. Thus, even after some signal processing, non-heartbeat components still remain over such processed signal, which could degrade the heartbeat detection accuracy. In particular for the subjects with low HR (Heart Rate), the estimated HR tends to be higher than the ground truth HR due to such non-heartbeat components, though the conventional methods have mainly focused on the heartbeat detection against the subjects with the normal HR higher than 50 bpm (Beats Per Minute). In this paper, to accurately detect heartbeat even with low HR via a Doppler sensor, we propose a heartbeat detection method based on heartbeat signal reconstruction with convolutional LSTM (Bidirectional-Long Short-Term Memory). In the proposed method, to reconstruct a heartbeat signal based on the periodicity of heartbeat and the spectrum distribution peculiar to heartbeat, successive spectrograms that might be due to heartbeat is used as an input to convolutional LSTM. In addition, for better reconstruction of a heartbeat signal, the previously estimated RRI (R-R Interval) is also used as a feature in the proposed deep learning model with convolutional LSTM. Through the experiments, we confirmed that our proposed method accurately detected heartbeat against 17 subjects including the ones with the HR lower than 50 bpm.

Abstract

An Electrocardiogram (ECG) is a typical method used to detect heartbeat, and an ECG signal analysis enables the detection of some heart diseases. However, the ECG-based heartbeat detection requires device attachment, which is not preferred for daily use. A Doppler sensor could be a device used to enable the non-contact heartbeat detection. In this paper, we propose a Doppler sensor-based ECG signal reconstruction method by a hybrid deep learning model with Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM). An ECG signal can be reconstructed by relating features of a heartbeat signal obtained by a Doppler sensor to those of the ECG signal. Thus, we construct the deep learning model that extracts the spatial and temporal features from the heartbeat signal by CNN and LSTM. Based on the extracted features, the ECG signal is reconstructed. We conducted experiments to observe heartbeat against 9 healthy subjects without heart disease. The experimental results showed that our method performed ECG signal reconstruction with a correlation coefficient of 0.86 between the reconstructed and actual ECG signals, even without attaching devices. The results indicate that it is possible to remotely reconstruct an ECG signal from a heartbeat signal via a Doppler sensor.

Abstract

We search for gravitational-wave (GW) transients associated with fast radio bursts (FRBs) detected by the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment Fast Radio Burst Project, during the first part of the third observing run of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (2019 April 1 15:00 UTC–2019 October 1 15:00 UTC). Triggers from 22 FRBs were analyzed with a search that targets both binary neutron star (BNS) and neutron star–black hole (NSBH) mergers. A targeted search for generic GW transients was conducted on 40 FRBs. We find no significant evidence for a GW association in either search. Given the large uncertainties in the distances of our FRB sample, we are unable to exclude the possibility of a GW association. Assessing the volumetric event rates of both FRB and binary mergers, an association is limited to 15% of the FRB population for BNS mergers or 1% for NSBH mergers. We report 90% confidence lower bounds on the distance to each FRB for a range of GW progenitor models and set upper limits on the energy emitted through GWs for a range of emission scenarios. We find values of order 10 ^51 –10 ^57 erg for models with central GW frequencies in the range 70–3560 Hz. At the sensitivity of this search, we find these limits to be above the predicted GW emissions for the models considered. We also find no significant coincident detection of GWs with the repeater, FRB 20200120E, which is the closest known extragalactic FRB.

The non-invasive fetal electrocardiogram is a widely employed measurement for fetal heart rate estimation, which is extracted from the electrodes placed on the surface of the maternal abdomen. The qualities of the fetal ECG recordings, however, are frequently affected by the noises from various interference sources. In general, the fetal heart rate estimates are unreliable when low-quality fetal ECG signals are used for fetal heart rate estimation, which makes accurate fetal heart rate estimation a challenging task. So, the signal quality assessment for the fetal ECG records is an essential step before fetal heart rate estimation. In other words, some low-quality fetal ECG signal segments are supposed to be detected and removed by utilizing signal quality assessment, so as to improve the accuracy of fetal heart rate estimation. A few supervised learning-based fetal ECG signal quality assessment approaches have been introduced and shown to accurately classify high- and low-quality fetal ECG signal segments, but large fetal ECG datasets with quality annotation are required in these methods. Yet, the labeled fetal ECG datasets are limited. Proposed methods: An unsupervised learning-based multi-level fetal ECG signal quality assessment approach is proposed in this paper for identifying three levels of fetal ECG signal quality. We extracted some features associated with signal quality, including entropy-based features, statistical features, and ECG signal quality indices. Additionally, an autoencoder-based feature is calculated, which is related to the reconstruction error of the spectrograms generated from fetal ECG signal segments. The high-, medium-, and low-quality fetal ECG signal segments are classified by inputting these features into a self-organizing map. Main results: The experimental results showed that our proposal achieved a weighted average F1-score of 90% in three-level fetal ECG signal quality classification. Moreover, with the acceptable removal of detected low-quality signal segments, the errors of fetal heart rate estimation were reduced to a certain extent.

Abstract

Arrhythmia is one of the causes of sudden infant death, and it is very important to detect fetal arrhythmia for fetal well-being. Fetal electrocardiogram (FECG) is one of the methods to detect a heartbeat. Fetal arrhythmia can be detected based on the heartbeat detection results from FECG signals such as heartbeat intervals. However, the accuracy of arrhythmia detection easily degrades depending on the accuracy of heartbeat detection. In this paper, we propose a deep learning-based fetal arrhythmia detection method using FECG signals. Recently, arrhythmia detection methods using adult ECG signals have achieved a high arrhythmia detection accuracy based on deep learning. Motivated by this fact, in the proposed method, the acquired FECG signals are segmented, and the segments are input into a deep learning model that classifies them into normal or arrhythmia ones. Based on the classification results of multiple segments, a subject is judged as a healthy or arrhythmia subject. Each segment of the training data is divided into three categories based on the estimated heartbeat interval: (i) normal, (ii) arrhythmia, and (iii) a segment that could be both normal and arrhythmic. Only segments labeled as normal or arrhythmia are used for training a deep learning model to achieve a higher classification accuracy of the model. Through these procedures, the proposed method detects fetal arrhythmia with fewer effects of heartbeat detection results. The experimental results show that the proposed method achieves 96.2% accuracy, 100% specificity, and 100% recall, improving the values of conventional methods based on heartbeat detection and feature detection.

21. A Denoising Method Using Deep Image Prior to Human-Target Detection Using MIMO FMCW Radar

Abstract

A Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar can provide a range-angle map that expresses the signal power against each range and angle. It is possible to estimate object locations by detecting the signal power that exceeds a threshold using an algorithm, such as Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR). However, noise and multipath components often exist over the range-angle map, which could produce false alarms for an undesired location depending on the threshold setting. In other words, the threshold setting is sensitive in noisy range-angle maps. Therefore, if the noise is reduced, the threshold can be easily set to reduce the number of false alarms. In this paper, we propose a method that improves the CFAR threshold tolerance by denoising a range-angle map using Deep Image Prior (DIP). DIP is an unsupervised deep-learning technique that enables image denoising. In the proposed method, DIP is applied to the range-angle map calculated by the Curve-Length (CL) method, and then the object location is detected over the denoised range-angle map based on Cell-Averaging CFAR (CA-CFAR), which is a typical threshold setting algorithm. Through the experiments to estimate human locations in indoor environments, we confirmed that the proposed method with DIP reduced the number of false alarms and estimated the human location accurately while improving the tolerance of the threshold setting, compared to the method without DIP.

Abstract

Blink duration is one of the useful indicators to estimate drowsiness and fatigue. A Doppler sensor could be a key device to realize the non-contact blink duration estimation, which is very useful for the drowsiness and fatigue monitoring in real life. However, none of the blink duration estimation methods has been proposed so far. In this paper, we propose a novel Doppler sensor-based blink duration estimation method based on the analysis of eyelids closing and opening behavior on a spectrogram. When one blinks, the energies caused by eyelids closing and opening behavior appears on a spectrogram. Hence, the blink duration can be estimated by integrating such energies and then detecting the timings when the integrated energy caused by the eyelids closing behavior appears and when the energy caused by the eyelids opening behavior disappears. To precisely detect such timings, a spectrogram with a short time window is better. However, thorough the preliminary experiments, we confirmed that when a shorter time window is used, more noise appears around such timings, which makes it difficult to detect such timings. To deal with this issue, the proposed method multiplies several integrated energies for spectrograms with different time windows. By multiplying the integrated energies with such noise and the ones without such noise, the energy level of such noise gets significantly declined over the product. Furthermore, the levels of the redundant blink energies also decline to the noise level, where the redundant blink energies denote the ones that appear before and after the eyelids closing and opening timings because of a long time window. The results of the experiments on 8 subjects watching a movie showed that our method achieved an average root mean squared error (RMSE) of 49.3 ms.

Abstract

We report the observation of gravitational waves from two compact binary coalescences in LIGO’s and Virgo’s third observing run with properties consistent with neutron star–black hole (NSBH) binaries. The two events are named GW200105_162426 and GW200115_042309, abbreviated as GW200105 and GW200115; the first was observed by LIGO Livingston and Virgo and the second by all three LIGO–Virgo detectors. The source of GW200105 has component masses $8.{9}_{-1.5}^{+1.2}$ and $1.{9}_{-0.2}^{+0.3}\,{M}_{\odot }$ , whereas the source of GW200115 has component masses $5.{7}_{-2.1}^{+1.8}$ and $1.{5}_{-0.3}^{+0.7}\,{M}_{\odot }$ (all measurements quoted at the 90% credible level). The probability that the secondary’s mass is below the maximal mass of a neutron star is 89%–96% and 87%–98%, respectively, for GW200105 and GW200115, with the ranges arising from different astrophysical assumptions. The source luminosity distances are ${280}_{-110}^{+110}$ and ${300}_{-100}^{+150}\,\mathrm{Mpc}$ , respectively. The magnitude of the primary spin of GW200105 is less than 0.23 at the 90% credible level, and its orientation is unconstrained. For GW200115, the primary spin has a negative spin projection onto the orbital angular momentum at 88% probability. We are unable to constrain the spin or tidal deformation of the secondary component for either event. We infer an NSBH merger rate density of ${45}_{-33}^{+75}\,{\mathrm{Gpc}}^{-3}\,{\mathrm{yr}}^{-1}$ when assuming that GW200105 and GW200115 are representative of the NSBH population or ${130}_{-69}^{+112}\,{\mathrm{Gpc}}^{-3}\,{\mathrm{yr}}^{-1}$ under the assumption of a broader distribution of component masses.

Abstract

The laser ranging interferometer onboard the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment Follow-On mission proved the feasibility of an interferometric sensor for inter-satellite length tracking with sub-nanometer precision, establishing an important milestone for space laser interferometry and the general expectation that future gravity missions will employ heterodyne laser interferometry for satellite-to-satellite ranging. In this paper, we present the design of an on-axis optical bench for next-generation laser ranging which enhances the received optical power and the transmit beam divergence, enabling longer interferometer arms and relaxing the optical power requirement of the laser assembly. All design functionalities and requirements are verified by means of computer simulations. A thermal analysis is carried out to investigate the robustness of the proposed optical bench to the temperature fluctuations found in orbit.

Abstract

Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell (PEFC) is desired to be operated over 90℃ during the period from 2020 to 2025 in Japan. The aim of this study is to clarify the impact of microporous layer (MPL) on the temperature profile of interface between polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) and catalyst layer at the cathode (i.e., the reaction surface) in a single PEFC with an initial temperature of cell (Tini) from 80℃ to 100℃. An 1D multi-plate heat transfer model based on temperature data of separator measured using thermograph in power generation was developed to evaluate temperature of the reaction surface (Treact). This study investigated the effect of MPL, Tini, flow rate and relative humidity of supply gas on Treact distribution. As a result, it is found that the impact of flow rate of supply gas on Treact distribution is little irrespective of MPL, Tini and relative humidity of supply gas. When MPL is not coated, Treact – Tini is higher by 2℃ - 3℃ and relatively flat compared to MPL coating condition and Treact – Tini with MPL is increased by 1℃ from the inlet to outlet of cell irrespective of Tini and relative humidity of supply gas. In addition, it is revealed that Treact – Tini with MPL is the highest when the relative humidity of supply gas is 40 %RH at the anode and 40 %RH at the cathode, which is the lowest relative humidity condition in this study.

Abstract

Isolated neutron stars that are asymmetric with respect to their spin axis are possible sources of detectable continuous gravitational waves. This paper presents a fully coherent search for such signals from eighteen pulsars in data from LIGO and Virgo’s third observing run (O3). For known pulsars, efficient and sensitive matched-filter searches can be carried out if one assumes the gravitational radiation is phase-locked to the electromagnetic emission. In the search presented here, we relax this assumption and allow both the frequency and the time derivative of the frequency of the gravitational waves to vary in a small range around those inferred from electromagnetic observations. We find no evidence for continuous gravitational waves, and set upper limits on the strain amplitude for each target. These limits are more constraining for seven of the targets than the spin-down limit defined by ascribing all rotational energy loss to gravitational radiation. In an additional search, we look in O3 data for long-duration (hours–months) transient gravitational waves in the aftermath of pulsar glitches for six targets with a total of nine glitches. We report two marginal outliers from this search, but find no clear evidence for such emission either. The resulting duration-dependent strain upper limits do not surpass indirect energy constraints for any of these targets.

Abstract

The relationship between the magnetic interaction and photoinduced dynamics in antiferromagnetic perovskites is investigated in this study. In La _1/3 Sr _2/3 FeO _3 thin films, commensurate spin ordering is accompanied by charge disproportionation, whereas SrFeO _3− _δ thin films show incommensurate helical antiferromagnetic spin ordering due to increased ferromagnetic coupling compared to La _1/3 Sr _2/3 FeO _3 . To understand the photoinduced spin dynamics in these materials, we investigate the spin ordering through time-resolved resonant soft x-ray scattering. In La _1/3 Sr _2/3 FeO _3 , ultrafast quenching of the magnetic ordering within 130 fs through a nonthermal process is observed, triggered by charge transfer between the Fe atoms. We compare this to the photoinduced dynamics of the helical magnetic ordering of SrFeO _3− _δ . We find that the change in the magnetic coupling through optically induced charge transfer can offer an even more efficient channel for spin-order manipulation.

Abstract

The data presented here are related to the research article entitled “Overexpression of Perilipin1 protects against atheroma progression in apolipoprotein E knockout mice” [1]. This paper describes data that were obtained from perilipin 1 (PLIN1) transgenic mice (Plin1Tg) regarding atherosclerosis. The main aim of collecting the data was to clarify the role of PLIN1 in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis. The data were collected from C57BL/6J mice, apolipoprotein E knockout mice (ApoeKO) and Plin1Tg/ApoeKO. The atherosclerotic lesion areas of aorta were 3.3 ± 1.2% in C57BL/6J mice, 14.2 ± 3.2% in ApoeKO, and 5.6 ± 1.9% in Plin1Tg/ApoeKO. Body weight, gonadal adipose mass and plasma triglyceride concentrations were comparable among the three groups [1]. Abstract To examine the effects of luseogliflozin, a sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor, on pancreatic beta cell mass in db/db mice of different ages. db/db mice aged 6, 10, 14 and 24 weeks old were fed either standard chow (control group) or standard chow containing 0.01% luseogliflozin (luseo group). After 4 weeks, immunohistochemistry and gene expression tests were conducted. In 6-week-old db/db mice, immunohistochemistry revealed a significant increase in beta cell mass in the luseo group compared with the control group after 4 weeks of treatment. Gene expression profiling of isolated islets showed upregulation Mafa, Pdx1, Ki67 and Ccnd2 in the luseo group. Beta cell mass decreased with age in db/db mice in the control group. Beta cell mass in the luseo group significantly increased compared with the control group regardless of age, although beta cell mass in the 28-week-old luseo group (4 weeks of treatment in 24-week-old db/db mice) was significantly lower than in the 10-week-old luseo group (4 weeks of treatment in 6-week-old db/db mice). Luseogliflozin preserved beta cell mass in db/db mice. The protective effect was more evident in the earlier phase of diabetes.

Abstract

Demands for vital sign monitoring are increasing in the field of health care. In particular, the R-R Interval (RRI) estimation has been studied extensively, since the RRI variation is highly related with the stress of a subject. Various Doppler sensor-based-heartbeat detection methods have been proposed so far, thanks to non-contact and non-invasive features of a Doppler sensor. In our previous research, we have proposed a Doppler sensor-based RRI estimation method by a spectrogram. In this method, the spectra due to heartbeats are integrated on a spectrogram, and then the RRI is estimated by detecting the peaks of the integrated spectrum. However, the undesired peaks sometimes appear even in the situation where a subject sits still. In this paper, as the extended version of our previous method, we propose a Doppler sensor-based RRI estimation method leveraging the accurate peak detection. In the proposed method, to prevent the incorrect peak detection, the peaks due to heartbeats are detected using some peaks before and after the investigated peak. Through the experiments on 10 subjects in the cases where a subject was sitting still, typing, and speaking, we confirmed that the proposed method improved our previous and state-of-the-art ones by the root-mean-squared error of the RRI. Furthermore, based on the estimated RRI, we calculated the stress index low-frequency/high-frequency (LF/HF), which is one of the useful indices to evaluate the stress of a subject. As a result, our proposed method outperformed the other ones by the relative error of the LF/HF.

Abstract

We investigate the ultrafast lattice dynamics in BaFe_{2}As_{2} via time-resolved x-ray diffraction measurements using an x-ray free-electron laser at SPring-8 Angstrom Compact free-electron LAser (SACLA). The profile of the Bragg peaks substantially changes after strong photoexcitation, where the c axis length of the lattice initially contracts, followed by expansion. These ultrafast lattice contractions and expansions significantly depend on the pump fluence, and it is suggested that a strong normal stress is applied along the c axis. To obtain a phenomenological understanding of the observed lattice dynamics, we performed calculations based on a two-temperature model and an ultrafast thermoelasticity model. Our results showed that a steep gradient of the electron temperature induced by photoexcitation generates a blast force, which acts as a strong normal stress. We propose that a temporal stress can be applied by a strong optical pump, and this scheme can be another route for the application of uniaxial stress to superconductors.

Abstract

Artificially fabricated 3d/5d superlattices (SLs) involve both strong electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling in one material by means of interfacial 3d-5d coupling, whose mechanism remains mostly unexplored. In this work we investigated the mechanism of interfacial coupling in LaMnO_{3}/SrIrO_{3} SLs by several spectroscopic approaches. Hard x-ray absorption, magnetic circular dichroism and photoemission spectra evidence the systematic modulation of the Ir ferromagnetism and the electronic structure with the change of the SL repetition period. First-principles calculations further reveal the mechanism of the SL-period dependence of the interfacial electronic structure and the local properties of the Ir moments, confirming that the formation of Ir-Mn molecular orbital is responsible for the interfacial coupling effects. The SL-period dependence of the ratio between orbital and spin components of the Ir magnetic moments can be attributed to the realignment of electron spin during the formation of the interfacial molecular orbital. Our results clarify the nature of interfacial coupling in this prototypical 3d/5d SL system and the conclusion will shed light on the study of other strongly correlated and spin-orbit coupled oxide heterointerfaces.

Abstract

Tracking moving masses in several degrees of freedom with high precision and large dynamic range is a central aspect in many current and future gravitational physics experiments. Laser interferometers have been established as one of the tools of choice for such measurement schemes. Using sinusoidal phase modulation homodyne interferometry allows a drastic reduction of the complexity of the optical setup, a key limitation of multi-channel interferometry. By shifting the complexity of the setup to the signal processing stage, these methods enable devices with a size and weight not feasible using conventional techniques. In this paper we present the design of a novel sensor topology based on deep frequency modulation interferometry: the self-referenced single-element dual-interferometer (SEDI) inertial sensor, which takes simplification one step further by accommodating two interferometers in one optic. Using a combination of computer models and analytical methods we show that an inertial sensor with sub-picometer precision for frequencies above 10 mHz, in a package of a few cubic inches, seems feasible with our approach. Moreover we show that by combining two of these devices it is possible to reach sub-picometer precision down to 2 mHz. In combination with the given compactness, this makes the SEDI sensor a promising approach for applications in high precision inertial sensing for both next-generation space-based gravity missions employing drag-free control, and ground-based experiments employing inertial isolation systems with optical readout.

Abstract

Unraveling the origin of ultrafast demagnetization in multisublattice ferromagnetic materials requires femtosecond x-ray techniques to trace the magnetic moment dynamics on individual elements, but this could not yet be achieved in the hard x-ray regime. We demonstrate here the first ultrafast demagnetization dynamics in the ferromagnetic heavy 5d-transition metal Pt using circularly-polarized hard x-rays at an x-ray free electron laser (XFEL). The decay time of laser-induced demagnetization of L1 _0 -FePt is determined to be ${\tau }_{{\rm{Pt}}}=0.61\pm 0.04\,{\rm{ps}}$ using time-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Pt L _3 edge, whereas magneto-optical Kerr measurements indicate the decay time for the total magnetization as ${\tau }_{{\rm{total}}}\lt 0.1\,\mathrm{ps}$ . A transient magnetic state with a photo-modulated ratio of the 3d and 5d magnetic moments is demonstrated for pump–probe delays larger than 1 ps. We explain this distinct photo-modulated transient magnetic state by the induced-moment behavior of the Pt atom and the x-ray probing depth. Our findings pave the way for the future use of XFELs to disentangle atomic spin dynamics contributions.

Abstract

Tilapia type I atelocollagen (TAC) is a strong candidate for clinical application as its biological scaffold due to a high degeneration temperature and biologically safe properties. The aim of this study was to confirm the biological effects of TAC in vitro on osteoblastic cells, simulating its clinical application. The proliferation and differentiation of typical preosteoblasts, MC3T3-E1 cells, were investigated using a microarray analysis, staining assay for mineralization, and real-time PCR analysis of the expression of mineralization-related genes. The mRNA expression of 10 genes involved in proliferation and differentiation increased after 3-day culture on an TAC gel, with an average balanced score ratio exceeding 1.5 compared to the control. After two weeks of culture, all three experimental groups showed stronger alkaline phosphatase staining than after one week. The genes expression of alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin, and bone sialoprotein increased under the experimental conditions. The gene expression of osteopontin did not increase, and no statistical differences were noted among the three experimental groups. The present and previous findings suggest that TAC is not only a suitable alternative to collagen products originating from mammals but also a novel biomaterial with cell differentiation ability for regenerative medicine.

Abstract

For scaffold manufacturing, the utility of bioactive natural organic materials derived from marine products is useful and indispensable as an alternative to bovine collagen. The weakest feature of fish collagen for scaffold application is its low degeneration temperature (Td), indicating poor stability of fish collagen in mammals in vivo. We have focused on the tropical fish tilapia as a candidate for generating a clinical scaffold. The aim of this study was to confirm the Td of tilapia type I atelocollagen (TAC) for biomedical application. Furthermore, the physical and structural properties were investigated and evaluated as a scaffold on a sponge form. Different concentrations {0.5%, 1.0%, and 2.0% (v/v)} of TAC solution were analyzed. Differential scanning calorimetry showed that the Td of TAC was 35-36°C. The scanning electron microscopy results indicated that the pore size (90–160 μm) of TAC sponges is acceptable for cell proliferation. The tensile strength of porous sponges was in the range of 0.01–0.07 MPa. These findings indicate that the TAC sponge prepared from tilapia is one of candidates as a scaffold. The 1.0% (v/v) concentration of TAC solution is especially recommended to be advantageous for preparing and handling the solution and for sponge formation.
