Layered van der Waals tellurides reveal topologically non-trivial properties that give rise to unconventional magneto-transport phenomena. Additionally, their semimetallic character with high mobility makes them promising candidates for large magneto-thermoelectric effects. Remarkable studies on the very large and unconventional Nernst effect in WTe$_2$ have been reported, raising questions about whether this property is shared across the entire family of van der Waals tellurides. In this study, systematic measurements of the Nernst effect in telluride van der Waals Weyl semimetals are presented. Large linear Nernst coefficients in WTe$_2$ and MoTe$_2$ are identified, and moderate Nernst coefficients with non-linear behavior in magnetic fields are observed in W$_{0.65}$Mo$_{0.35}$Te$_2$, TaIrTe$_4$, and TaRhTe$_4$. Within this sample set, a correlation between the dominant linear-in-magnetic-field component of the Nernst coefficient and mobility is established, aligning with the established Nernst scaling framework, though with a different scaling factor compared to existing literature. This enhancement might be caused by the shared favorable electronic band structure of this family of materials. Conversely, the non-linear component of the Nernst effect in a magnetic field could not be correlated with mobility. This non-linear term is almost absent in the binary compounds, suggesting a multiband origin and strong compensation between electron-like and hole-like carriers. This comprehensive study highlights the potential of van der Waals tellurides for thermoelectric conversion.

Conformance testing of automata is about checking the equivalence of a known specification and a black-box implementation. An important notion in conformance testing is that of a complete test suite, which guarantees that if an implementation satisfying certain conditions passes all tests, then it is equivalent to the specification. We introduce a framework for proving completeness of test suites at the general level of automata in monoidal closed categories. Moreover, we provide a generalization of a classical conformance testing technique, the W-method. We demonstrate the applicability of our results by recovering the W-method for deterministic finite automata, Moore machines, and Mealy machines, and by deriving new instances of complete test suites for weighted automata and deterministic nominal automata.

Context. Many Milky Way globular clusters (GCs) host multiple stellar populations, challenging the traditional view of GCs as single-population systems. It has been suggested that second-generation stars could form in a disk from gas lost by first-generation stars or from external accreted gas. Aims. We investigate how the introduction of a second stellar generation affects mass loss, internal mixing, and rotational properties of GCs in a time-varying Galactic tidal field and different orbital configurations. Methods. We conducted direct N-body simulations of GCs on three types of orbits derived from the observed Milky Way GCs. We evolved the clusters for 8 Gyr in the time-varying Galactic potential of the IllustrisTNG-100 cosmological simulation. After 2 Gyr, we introduced a second stellar generation, comprising 5% of the initial mass of the first generation, as a flattened disk of stars. For comparison, we ran control simulations using a static Galactic potential and isolated clusters. Results. We present the mass loss, structural evolution, and kinematic properties of GCs with two stellar generations, focusing on tidal mass, half-mass radii, velocity distributions, and angular momentum. Conclusions. Our results show that the mass loss of GCs depends primarily on their orbital parameters, with tighter orbits leading to higher mass loss. The Galaxy's growth resulted in tighter orbits, meaning GCs lost less mass than if its mass had always been constant. The initially flattened second-generation disk became nearly spherical within one relaxation time. However, whether its distinct rotational signature was retained depends on the orbit: for the long radial orbit, it vanished quickly; for the tube orbit, it lasted several Gyr; but for the circular orbit, rotation persisted until the present day, Comment: 27 pages, 28 figures. A 3D point cloud is an unstructured, sparse, and irregular dataset, typically collected by airborne LiDAR systems over a geological region. Laser pulses emitted from these systems reflect off objects both on and above the ground, resulting in a dataset containing the longitude, latitude, and elevation of each point, as well as information about the corresponding laser pulse strengths. A widely studied research problem, addressed in many previous works, is ground filtering, which involves partitioning the points into ground and non-ground subsets. This research introduces a novel task: detecting and identifying human-made objects amidst natural tree structures. This task is performed on the subset of non-ground points derived from the ground filtering stage. Marked Point Fields (MPFs) are used as models well-suited to these tasks. The proposed methodology consists of three stages: ground filtering, local information extraction (LIE), and clustering. In the ground filtering stage, a statistical method called One-Sided Regression (OSR) is introduced, addressing the limitations of prior ground filtering methods on uneven terrains. In the LIE stage, unsupervised learning methods are lacking. To mitigate this, a kernel-based method for the Hessian matrix of the MPF is developed. In the clustering stage, the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) is applied to the results of the LIE stage to partition the non-ground points into trees and human-made objects. The underlying assumption is that LiDAR points from trees exhibit a three-dimensional distribution, while those from human-made objects follow a two-dimensional distribution. The Hessian matrix of the MPF effectively captures this distinction. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed ground filtering method outperforms previous techniques, and the LIE method successfully distinguishes between points representing trees and human-made objects.

We present a method for incorporating a stochastic point of view into physics exercises of mathematics education. The core of our method is the randomization of some inputs, the system model used does not differ from what we would use in the deterministic approach. We consider exercises from the theory of projectile motion and statics. The outputs of stochastic models are random variables, and we usually determine their probability distributions, expected values, variances, and relative standard deviations, and the probabilities of some events related to them are also calculated. Wide, highly eccentric ($e>0.9$) compact binaries can naturally arise as progenitors of gravitational wave (GW) mergers. These systems are expected to have a significant population in the mHz band, with their GW signals characterized by ``repeated bursts" emitted upon each pericenter passage. In this study, we show that the detection of mHz GW signals from highly eccentric stellar mass binaries in the local universe can strongly constrain their orbital parameters. Specifically, it can achieve a relative measurement error of $\sim 10^{-6}$ for orbital frequency and $\sim 1\%$ for eccentricity (as $1-e$) in most of the detectable cases. On the other hand, the binary's mass ratio, distance, and intrinsic orbital inclination may be less precisely determined due to degeneracies in the GW waveform. We also perform mock LISA data analysis to evaluate the realistic detectability of highly eccentric compact binaries. Our results show that highly eccentric systems could be efficiently identified when multiple GW sources and stationary Gaussian instrumental noise are present in the detector output. Centrosymmetric compounds which host three-dimensional topological spin structures comprise a distinct subclass of materials in which multiple-$\mathbf{q}$ magnetic order is stabilized by anisotropy and bond frustration in contrast to the more common path of antisymmetric exchange interactions. Here we investigate static and dynamic magnetic properties of the cubic perovskite SrFeO$_3$ $\unicode{x2013}$ a rare example of a centrosymmetric material hosting two types of topological spin textures: skyrmion- and hedgehog-lattice phases. Our detailed magnetization and dilatometry measurements describe the domain selection processes and phase transitions in SrFeO$_3$. Spin excitations are investigated using inelastic neutron scattering for all three zero-field phases. In the higher-temperature ordered phases, high-energy magnons increasingly lose coherence, so that spin fluctuations are dominated by a distinct quasielastic component at low energies. We anticipate that this could be generic to symmetric helimagnets in which the chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken by the magnetic order.

While dynamical tides only become relevant during the last couple of orbits for circular inspirals, orbital eccentricity can increase their impact during earlier phases of the inspiral by exciting tidal oscillations at each close encounter. We investigate the effect of dynamical tides on the orbital evolution of eccentric neutron star binaries using post-Newtonian numerical simulations and constructing an analytic stochastic model. Our study reveals a strong dependence of dynamical tides on the pericenter distance, with the energy transferred to dynamical tides over that dissipated in gravitational waves (GWs) exceeding $\sim1\%$ at separations $r_\mathrm{p}\lesssim50$ km for large eccentricities. We demonstrate that the effect of dynamical tides on orbital evolution can manifest as a phase shift in the GW signal. We show that the signal-to-noise ratio of the GW phase shift can reach the detectability threshold of 8 with a single aLIGO detector at design densitivity for eccentric neutron star binaries at a distance of $40$ Mpc. This requires a pericenter distance of $r_\mathrm{p0}\lesssim68$ km ($r_\mathrm{p0}\lesssim76$ km) at binary formation with eccentricity close to 1 for a reasonable tidal deformability and f-mode frequency of 500 and $1.73$ kHz (700 and $1.61$ kHz), respectively. The observation of the phase shift will enable measuring the f-mode frequency of neutron stars independently from their tidal deformability, providing significant insights into neutron star seismology and the properties of the equation of state. Driven by advancements in sensing and computing, deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based methods have demonstrated significant potential in effectively tackling distribution system restoration (DSR) challenges under uncertain operational scenarios. However, the data-intensive nature of DRL poses obstacles in achieving satisfactory DSR solutions for large-scale, complex distribution systems. Inspired by the transformative impact of emerging foundation models, including large language models (LLMs), across various domains, this paper explores an innovative approach harnessing LLMs' powerful computing capabilities to address scalability challenges inherent in conventional DRL methods for solving DSR. To our knowledge, this study represents the first exploration of foundation models, including LLMs, in revolutionizing conventional DRL applications in power system operations. Our contributions are twofold: 1) introducing a novel LLM-powered Physics-Informed Decision Transformer (PIDT) framework that leverages LLMs to transform conventional DRL methods for DSR operations, and 2) conducting comparative studies to assess the performance of the proposed LLM-powered PIDT framework at its initial development stage for solving DSR problems. While our primary focus in this paper is on DSR operations, the proposed PIDT framework can be generalized to optimize sequential decision-making across various power system operations.

Long-distance optical quantum channels are necessarily lossy, leading to errors in transmitted quantum information, entanglement degradation and, ultimately, poor protocol performance. Quantum states carrying information in the channel can be probabilistically amplified to compensate for loss, but are destroyed when amplification fails. Quantum correction of the channel itself is therefore required, but break-even performance -- where arbitrary states can be better transmitted through a corrected channel than an uncorrected one -- has so far remained out of reach. Here we perform distillation by heralded amplification to improve a noisy entanglement channel. We subsequently employ entanglement swapping to demonstrate that arbitrary quantum information transmission is unconditionally improved -- i.e. without relying on postselection or post-processing of data -- compared to the uncorrected channel. In this way, it represents realisation of a genuine quantum relay. We introduce LightIt, a method for explicit illumination control for image generation. Recent generative methods lack lighting control, which is crucial to numerous artistic aspects of image generation such as setting the overall mood or cinematic appearance. To overcome these limitations, we propose to condition the generation on shading and normal maps. We model the lighting with single bounce shading, which includes cast shadows. We first train a shading estimation module to generate a dataset of real-world images and shading pairs. Then, we train a control network using the estimated shading and normals as input. Our method demonstrates high-quality image generation and lighting control in numerous scenes. Additionally, we use our generated dataset to train an identity-preserving relighting model, conditioned on an image and a target shading. Many gravitational wave (GW) sources are expected to have non-negligible eccentricity in the millihertz band. These highly eccentric compact object binaries may commonly serve as a progenitor stage of GW mergers, particularly in dynamical channels where environmental perturbations bring a binary with large initial orbital separation into a close pericenter passage, leading to efficient GW emission and a final merger. This work examines the stochastic GW background from highly eccentric ($e\gtrsim 0.9$), stellar-mass sources in the mHz band. Our findings suggest that these binaries can contribute a substantial GW power spectrum, potentially exceeding the LISA instrumental noise at $\sim 3-7$~mHz. This stochastic background is likely to be dominated by eccentric sources within the Milky Way, thus introducing anisotropy and time dependence in LISA's detection. However, given efficient search strategies to identify GW transients from highly eccentric binaries, the unresolvable noise level can be substantially lower, approaching $\sim 2$ orders of magnitude below the LISA noise curve. We investigate the thermodynamics of close encounters between stellar mass black holes (BHs) in the gaseous discs of active galactic nuclei (AGN), during which binary black holes (BBHs) may form. We consider a suite of 2D viscous hydrodynamical simulations within a shearing box prescription using the Eulerian grid code Athena++. We study formation scenarios where the fluid is either an isothermal gas or an adiabatic mixture of gas and radiation in local thermal equilibrium. We include the effects of viscous and shock heating, as well as optically thick cooling. We co-evolve the embedded BHs with the gas, keeping track of the energetic dissipation and torquing of the BBH by gas and inertial forces. We find that compared to the isothermal case, the minidiscs formed around each BH are significantly hotter and more diffuse, though BBH formation is still efficient. We observe massive blast waves arising from collisions between the radiative minidiscs during both the initial close encounter, and subsequent periapsis periods for successfully bound BBHs. These "disc novae" have a profound effect, depleting the BBH Hill sphere of gas and injecting energy into the surrounding medium. In analysing the thermal emission from these events, we observe periodic peaks in local luminosity associated with close encounters/periapses, with emission peaking in the optical/near-IR. In the AGN outskirts, these outbursts can reach 4% of the AGN luminosity in the IR band, with flares rising over 0.5-1year. We present Intrinsic Image Diffusion, a generative model for appearance decomposition of indoor scenes. Given a single input view, we sample multiple possible material explanations represented as albedo, roughness, and metallic maps. Appearance decomposition poses a considerable challenge in computer vision due to the inherent ambiguity between lighting and material properties and the lack of real datasets. To address this issue, we advocate for a probabilistic formulation, where instead of attempting to directly predict the true material properties, we employ a conditional generative model to sample from the solution space. Furthermore, we show that utilizing the strong learned prior of recent diffusion models trained on large-scale real-world images can be adapted to material estimation and highly improves the generalization to real images. Our method produces significantly sharper, more consistent, and more detailed materials, outperforming state-of-the-art methods by $1.5dB$ on PSNR and by $45\%$ better FID score on albedo prediction. We introduce a proof-theoretic method for showing nondefinability of second-order intuitionistic connectives by quantifier-free schemata. We apply the method to confirm that Taranovsky's "realizability disjunction" connective does not admit a quantifier-free definition, and use it to obtain new results and more nuanced information about the nondefinability of Kreisel's and Po{\l}acik's unary connectives. The finitary and combinatorial nature of our method makes it more resilient to changes in metatheory than common semantic approaches, whose robustness tends to waver once we pass to non-classical and especially anti-classical settings. The dynamical formation channels of gravitational wave (GW) sources typically involve a stage when the compact object binary source interacts with the environment, which may excite its eccentricity, yielding efficient GW emission. For the wide eccentric compact object binaries, the GW emission happens mostly near the pericenter passage, creating a unique, burst-like signature in the waveform. This work examines the possibility of stellar-mass bursting sources in the millihertz band for future LISA detections. Because of their long lifetime ($\sim 10^{7}\rm\, yr$) and promising detectability, the number of millihertz bursting sources can be large in the local universe. For example, based on our estimates, there will be $\sim 3 - 45$ bursting binary black holes in the Milky Way, with $\sim 10^{2} - 10^{4}$ bursts detected during the LISA mission. Moreover, we find that the number of bursting sources strongly depends on their formation history. If certain regions undergo active formation of compact object binaries in the recent few million years, there will be a significantly higher bursting source fraction. Thus, the detection of millihertz GW bursts not only serves as a clue for distinguishing different formation channels, but also helps us understand the star formation history in different regions of the Milky Way., Comment: 14+7 pages, 7+2 figures, accepted by ApJ

The black hole (BH) binaries in active galactic nuclei (AGN) are expected to form mainly through scattering encounters in the ambient gaseous medium. Recent simulations, including our own, have confirmed this formation pathway is highly efficient. We perform 3D smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of BH scattering encounters in AGN disks. Using a range of impact parameters, we probe the necessary conditions for binary capture and how different orbital trajectories affect the dissipative effects from the gas. We identify a single range of impact parameters, typically of width $\sim0.86-1.59$ binary Hill radii depending on AGN disk density, that reliably leads to binary formation. The periapsis of the first encounter is the primary variable that determines the outcome of the initial scattering. We find an associated power-law between the energy dissipated and the periapsis depth to be $\Delta E\propto r^{-b}$ with $b=0.42\pm0.16$, where deeper encounters dissipate more energy. Excluding accretion physics does not significantly alter these results. We identify the region of parameter space in initial energy vs impact parameter where a scattering leads to binary formation. Based on our findings, we provide a ready-to-use analytic criterion that utilises these two pre-encounter parameters to determine the outcome of an encounter, with a reliability rate of >90\%. As the criterion is based directly on our simulations, it provides a reliable and highly physically motivated criterion for predicting binary scattering outcomes which can be used in population studies of BH binaries and mergers around AGN., Comment: 20 pages, 19 figures

We investigate close encounters by stellar mass black holes (BHs) in the gaseous discs of active galactic nuclei (AGN) as a potential formation channel of binary black holes (BBHs). We perform a series of 2D isothermal viscous hydrodynamical simulations within a shearing box prescription using the Eulerian grid code Athena++. We co-evolve the embedded BHs with the gas keeping track of the energetic dissipation and torquing of the BBH by gas gravitation and inertial forces. To probe the dependence of capture on the initial conditions, we discuss a suite of 345 simulations spanning local AGN disc density ($\rho_0$) and impact parameter ($b$) space. We identify a clear region in $b - \rho_0$ space where gas assisted BBH capture is efficient. We find that the presence of gas leads to strong energetic dissipation during close encounters between unbound BHs, forming stably bound eccentric BBHs. We find that the gas dissipation during close encounters increases for systems with increased disc density and deeper periapsis passages $r_p$, fitting a power law such that $\Delta E \propto \rho_0^{\alpha}r_p^{\beta}$ where $\{\alpha,\beta\} = \{1.01\pm0.04,-0.43\pm0.03\}$. Alternatively, the gas dissipation is approximately $\Delta E = 4.3 M_\text{d} v_\text{H} v_p$, where $M_\text{d} $ is the mass of a single BH minidisc just prior to the encounter when the binary separation is $2r_\text{H}$ (two binary Hill radii), $v_\text{H}$ and $v_p$ are the relative BH velocities at $2r_\text{H}$ and at the first closest approach, respectively. We derive a prescription for capture which can be used in semi-analytical models of AGN. The recent report of a half-quantized thermal Hall effect in the Kitaev material $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ has sparked a strong debate on whether it is generated by Majorana fermion edge currents or whether other more conventional mechanisms involving magnons or phonons are at its origin. A more direct evidence for Majorana fermions which could be expected to arise from a contribution to the longitudinal heat conductivity $\kappa_{xx}$ at $T\rightarrow0$ is elusive due to a very complex magnetic field dependence of $\kappa_{xx}$. Here, we report very low temperature (below 1~K) thermal conductivity ($\kappa$) of another candidate Kitaev material, Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$. The application of a magnetic field along different principal axes of the crystal reveals a strong directional-dependent magnetic-field ($\bf B$) impact on $\kappa$. We show that no evidence for mobile quasiparticles except phonons can be concluded at any field from 0~T to the field polarized state. In particular, severely scattered phonon transport is observed across the $B-T$ phase diagram, which is attributed to prominent magnetic fluctuations. Cascades of phase transitions are uncovered for all $\bf B$ directions by probing the strength of magnetic fluctuations via a precise record of $\kappa$($B$). Our results thus rule out recent proposals for itinerant magnetic excitations in Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$, and emphasise the importance of discriminating true spin liquid transport properties from scattered phonons in candidate materials.

Simultaneous broadcast (SBC) protocols [Chor et al., FOCS 1985] constitute a special class of broadcast channels which have proved extremely useful in the design of various distributed computing constructions (e.g., multiparty computation, coin flipping, e-voting, fair bidding). As with any communication channel, it is crucial that SBC security is composable, i.e., it is preserved under concurrent protocol executions. The work of [Hevia, SCN 2006] proposes a formal treatment of SBC in the Universal Composability (UC) framework [Canetti, FOCS 2001] and a construction secure assuming an honest majority. In this work, we provide a comprehensive revision of SBC in the UC setting and improve the results of [Hevia, SCN 2006]. In particular, we present a new SBC functionality that captures both simultaneity and liveness by considering a broadcast period such that (i) within this period all messages are broadcast independently and (ii) after the period ends, the session is terminated without requiring participation of all parties. Next, we employ time-lock encryption (TLE) over a standard broadcast channel to devise an SBC protocol that realizes our functionality against any adaptive adversary corrupting up to all-but-one parties. In our study, we capture synchronicity via a global clock [Katz et al., TCC 2013], thus lifting the restrictions of the original synchronous communication setting used in [Hevia, SCN 2006]. As a building block of independent interest, we prove the first TLE protocol that is adaptively secure in the UC setting, strengthening the main result of [Arapinis et al., ASIACRYPT 2021].
