1. Generalized coupled cluster theory for ground and excited state intersections

Abstract

Coupled cluster theory in the standard formulation is unable to correctly describe conical intersections among states of the same symmetry. This limitation has restricted the practical application of an otherwise highly accurate electronic structure model, particularly in nonadiabatic dynamics. Recently, the intersection problem among the excited states was fully characterized and resolved. However, intersections with the ground state remain an open challenge, and addressing this problem is our objective here. We present a generalized coupled cluster framework that correctly accounts for the geometric phase effect and avoids bifurcations of the solutions to the ground state equations. Several applications are presented that demonstrate the correct description of ground state conical intersections. 2. Laguerre-Gaussian modes become elegant after an azimuthal phase modulation

Abstract

Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes are solutions of the paraxial Helmholtz equation in cylindrical coordinates and are associated with light fields carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM). It is customary to modulate such beams using phase-only vortex profiles, for example, when increasing (laddering up) or decreasing (laddering down) the OAM content of some given LG mode. However, the resulting beams have been shown to be hypergeometric-Gaussian modes, due to the changing radial amplitudes on propagation. In this work, we show that these beams in fact have the angular spectrum of elegant Laguerre-Gaussian (eLG) modes, and therefore map back to LG-type modes. Accordingly, the fields obtain new OAM and radial quantum numbers that depend on the initial OAM and additional OAM gained during modulation., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

3. Understanding failures in electronic structure methods arising from the geometric phase effect

Abstract

We show that intermediate normalization of the electronic wave function, where a constant component is enforced, will lead to an asymptotic discontinuity at one point along any path that encloses a ground state conical intersection. For some electronic structure methods, this gives rise to severe global artifacts in the ground and excited state potential energy surfaces. We investigate how this affects two electronic structure methods: coupled cluster theory and M{\o}ller-Plesset perturbation theory. The analysis suggests that intermediate normalization is problematic not only in near-degenerate regions, such as in the vicinity of conical intersections. In particular, since problems will occur for any path that encloses a ground state intersection, the affected methods can unexpectedly break down in regions of internal coordinate space that are normally considered within their range of validity., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures

4. Determining minimum energy conical intersections by enveloping the seam: exploring ground and excited state intersections in coupled cluster theory

Abstract

Minimum energy conical intersections can be used to rationalize photochemical processes. In this Letter, we examine an algorithm to locate these structures that does not require the evaluation of nonadiabatic coupling vectors, showing that it minimizes the energy on hypersurfaces that envelop the intersection seam. By constraining the states to be separated by a small non-zero energy difference, the algorithm ensures that numerical artifacts and convergence problems of coupled cluster theory at conical intersections are not encountered during the optimization. In this way, we demonstrate for various systems that minimum energy conical intersections with the ground state are well described by the coupled cluster singles and doubles model, suggesting that coupled cluster theory may in some cases provide a good description of relaxation to the ground state in nonadiabatic dynamics simulations., Comment: 27 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Free electrons in the interstellar medium refract and diffract radio waves along multiple paths, resulting in angular and temporal broadening of radio pulses that limits pulsar timing precision. We determine multifrequency, multi-epoch scattering times for the large dispersion measure millisecond pulsar J1903+0327 by developing a three component model for the emitted pulse shape that is convolved with a best fit pulse broadening function (PBF) identified from a family of thin-screen and extended-media PBFs. We show that the scattering time, $\tau$, at a fiducial frequency of 1500 MHz changes by approximately 10% over a 5.5yr span with a characteristic timescale of approximately 100 days. We also constrain the spectral index and inner scale of the wavenumber spectrum of electron density variations along this line of sight. We find that the scaling law for $\tau$ vs. radio frequency is strongly affected by any mismatch between the true and assumed PBF or between the true and assumed intrinsic pulse shape. We show using simulations that refraction is a plausible cause of the epoch dependence of $\tau$, manifesting as changes in the PBF shape and $1/e$ time scale. Abstract

The detection of a stochastic gravitational wave background by pulsar timing arrays suggests the presence of a supermassive black hole binary population. Although the observed spectrum generally aligns with predictions from orbital evolution driven by gravitational wave emission in circular orbits, there is a discernible preference for a turnover at the lowest observed frequencies. This turnover could indicate a significant hardening phase, transitioning from early environmental influences to later stages predominantly influenced by gravitational wave emission. In the vicinity of these binaries, the ejection of stars or dark matter particles through gravitational three-body slingshots efficiently extracts orbital energy, leading to a low-frequency turnover in the spectrum. By analyzing the NANOGrav 15-year data, we assess how the gravitational wave spectrum depends on the initial inner galactic profile prior to disruption by binary ejections, accounting for a range of initial binary eccentricities. Our findings suggest a parsec-scale galactic center density around $10^6\,M_\odot/\textrm{pc}^3$ across most of the parameter space, offering insights into the environmental effects on black hole evolution and combined matter density near galaxy centers., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

We present a sensor-agnostic spectral transformer as the basis for spectral foundation models. To that end, we introduce a Universal Spectral Representation (USR) that leverages sensor meta-data, such as sensing kernel specifications and sensing wavelengths, to encode spectra obtained from any spectral instrument into a common representation, such that a single model can ingest data from any sensor. Furthermore, we develop a methodology for pre-training such models in a self-supervised manner using a novel random sensor-augmentation and reconstruction pipeline to learn spectral features independent of the sensing paradigm. We demonstrate that our architecture can learn sensor independent spectral features that generalize effectively to sensors not seen during training. This work sets the stage for training foundation models that can both leverage and be effective for the growing diversity of spectral data.

Abstract

Developing robust drone detection systems is often constrained by the limited availability of large-scale annotated training data and the high costs associated with real-world data collection. However, leveraging synthetic data generated via game engine-based simulations provides a promising and cost-effective solution to overcome this issue. Therefore, we present SynDroneVision, a synthetic dataset specifically designed for RGB-based drone detection in surveillance applications. Featuring diverse backgrounds, lighting conditions, and drone models, SynDroneVision offers a comprehensive training foundation for deep learning algorithms. To evaluate the dataset's effectiveness, we perform a comparative analysis across a selection of recent YOLO detection models. Our findings demonstrate that SynDroneVision is a valuable resource for real-world data enrichment, achieving notable enhancements in model performance and robustness, while significantly reducing the time and costs of real-world data acquisition. Abstract

We present 850 $\mu$m polarization observations of the IC 348 star-forming region in the Perseus molecular cloud as part of the B-fields In STar-forming Region Observation (BISTRO) survey. We study the magnetic properties of two cores (HH 211 MMS and IC 348 MMS) and a filamentary structure of IC 348. We find that the overall field tends to be more perpendicular than parallel to the filamentary structure of the region. The polarization fraction decreases with intensity, and we estimate the trend by power-law and the mean of the Rice distribution fittings. The power indices for the cores are much smaller than 1, indicative of possible grain growth to micron size in the cores. We also measure the magnetic field strengths of the two cores and the filamentary area separately by applying the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method and its alternative version for compressed medium. The estimated mass-to-flux ratios are 0.45-2.20 and 0.63-2.76 for HH 211 MMS and IC 348 MMS, respectively, while the ratios for the filament is 0.33-1.50. This result may suggest that the transition from subcritical to supercritical conditions occurs at the core scale ($\sim$ 0.05 pc) in the region. In addition, we study the energy balance of the cores and find that the relative strength of turbulence to the magnetic field tends to be stronger for IC 348 MMS than HH 211 MMS. The result could potentially explain the different configurations inside the two cores: a single protostellar system in HH 211 MMS and multiple protostars in IC 348 MMS., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 21 pages, 12 figures

10. Quantum Skyrmions in general quantum channels: topological noise rejection and the discretization of quantum information

Abstract

The topology of a pure state of two entangled photons is leveraged to provide a discretization of quantum information. Since discrete signals are inherently more resilient to the effects of perturbations, this discrete class of entanglement observables may offer an advantage against noise. Establishing this is the primary objective of this paper. We develop a noise model that exploits the specific form of such topological wave functions - an entangled state of two photons with one in an orbital angular momentum state and the other in a polarization state. We show that noise affecting both photons can be recast as a position-dependent perturbation affecting only the photon in the polarization state. This approach allows us to utilize both the language and concepts used in studying noisy qubits, as well as recent advances in quantum polarimetry. By adding noise to a finite-dimensional Hilbert space of polarization states, we can describe the noise using quantum operations expressed through appropriate Krauss operators, whose structure is determined by quantum polarimetry. For non-depolarizing noise, we provide an argument based on homotopic maps that demonstrates the topology's resilience to noise. For depolarizing noise, numerical studies using the quantum channel description show that the discrete entanglement signal remains completely resilient. Finally, we identify sources of local noise that can destabilize the topology. This foundational work establishes a framework for understanding how topology enhances the resilience of quantum information, directly impacting the distribution of information through entanglement in noisy environments, such as quantum computers and quantum networks., Comment: 24 pages, 15 figures

11. Variable Resolution Sampling and Deep Learning Image Recovery for Accelerated Multi-Spectral MRI Near Metal Implants

Abstract

Purpose: This study presents a variable resolution (VR) sampling and deep learning reconstruction approach for multi-spectral MRI near metal implants, aiming to reduce scan times while maintaining image quality. Background: The rising use of metal implants has increased MRI scans affected by metal artifacts. Multi-spectral imaging (MSI) reduces these artifacts but sacrifices acquisition efficiency. Methods: This retrospective study on 1.5T MSI knee and hip data from patients with metal hardware used a novel spectral undersampling scheme to improve acquisition efficiency by ~40%. U-Net-based deep learning models were trained for reconstruction. Image quality was evaluated using SSIM, PSNR, and RESI metrics. Results: Deep learning reconstructions of undersampled VR data (DL-VR) showed significantly higher SSIM and PSNR values (p<0.001) compared to conventional reconstruction (CR-VR), with improved edge sharpness. Edge sharpness in DL-reconstructed images matched fully sampled references (p=0.5). Conclusion: This approach can potentially enhance MRI examinations near metal implants by reducing scan times or enabling higher resolution. 12. Rotational excitation in sympathetic cooling of diatomic molecular ions by laser-cooled atomic ions

Abstract

Sympathetic cooling of molecular ions through the Coulomb interaction with laser-cooled atomic ions is an efficient tool to prepare translationally cold molecules. Even at relatively high collisional energies of about 1eV (T$\sim$10000K), the nearest approach in the ion-ion collisions never gets closer than $\sim$1nm such that naively perturbations of the internal molecular state are not expected. The Coulomb field may, however, induce rotational transitions changing the purity of initially quantum state prepared molecules. Here, we use estimates of rotational state changes in collisions of diatomic ions with atomic ions (arXiv:1905.02130) and determine the overall rotational excitation accumulated over the sympathetic cooling. Ideally, all analyses of normally distributed data should include the full covariance information between all data points. In practice, the full covariance matrix between all data points is not always available. Either because a result was published without a covariance matrix, or because one tries to combine multiple results from separate publications. For simple hypothesis tests, it is possible to define robust test statistics that will behave conservatively in the presence on unknown correlations. For model parameter fits, one can inflate the variance by factor to ensure that things remain conservative at least up to a chosen confidence level. This paper describes a class of robust test statistics for simply hypothesis tests, as well as an algorithm to determine the necessary inflation factor model parameter fits. 14. Realistic ab initio predictions of excimer behavior under collective light-matter strong coupling

Abstract

Experiments show that light-matter strong coupling affects chemical properties, though the underlying mechanism remains unclear. We present an ab initio quantum electrodynamics coupled cluster method for the collective strong coupling regime. The model accurately describes electronic and electron-photon correlation within a molecular subsystem, while a simplified description of the collective polaritonic excitations allows for realistic microscopic light-matter couplings. We illustrate the model by investigating the potential energy surfaces of the argon dimer. This provides a prototype for excimers, and we analyze the ground and excited state vibrational levels. In the collective regime (small light-matter coupling, large number of molecules), the ground state potential energy surface and the first vibrational levels of the excited state are not changed significantly. However, collective strong coupling produces an abrupt transition in the vibrational landscape of the excimer, causing higher levels to behave similarly to ground state vibrations. 15. Two stellar populations with different metallicities in the low-mass globular cluster Gran 5

Abstract

Context. With the increasing number of discoveries of globular clusters in the inner Milky Way, the need for spectroscopic confirmation and further investigation of their stellar populations and chemodynamical properties has become crucial. Aims. Gran 5 is a newly reported low-mass globular cluster located close to the Galactic center, and it is thought to be an accreted object associated with the Gaia-Enceladus structure. This study aims to investigate the stellar populations of Gran 5 and their detailed chemical properties. Methods. We performed high-resolution near-infrared spectroscopy on seven stars in the field of Gran 5 using IGRINS on the Gemini-South telescope. Results. We identified six stars as cluster members and reveal that they are divided into two stellar populations with different metallicities, with mean [Fe/H] values of -0.76 dex and -0.55 dex, respectively. Abstract

Over the past decade, several millimeter interferometer programs have mapped the nearby star-forming galaxy M51 at a spatial resolution of ${\le}170$ pc. This study combines observations from three major programs: the PdBI Arcsecond Whirlpool Survey (PAWS), the SMA M51 large program (SMA-PAWS), and the Surveying the Whirlpool at Arcseconds with NOEMA (SWAN). The dataset includes the (1-0) and (2-1) rotational transitions of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O isotopologues. The observations cover the $r{<}\rm 3\,kpc$ region including center and part of the disk, thereby ensuring strong detections of the weaker $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O lines. All observations are convolved in this analysis to an angular resolution of 4$''$, corresponding to a physical scale of ${\sim}$170 pc. We investigate empirical line ratio relations and quantitatively evaluate molecular gas conditions such as temperature, density, and the CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor ($\alpha_{\rm CO}$). We employ two approaches to study the molecular gas conditions: (i) assuming local thermal equilibrium (LTE) to analytically determine the CO column density and $\alpha_{\rm CO}$, and (ii) using non-LTE modeling with RADEX to fit physical conditions to observed CO isotopologue intensities. We find that the $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ values {in the center and along the inner spiral arm} are $\sim$0.5 dex (LTE) and ${\sim}$0.1 dex (non-LTE) below the Milky Way inner disk value. The average non-LTE $\alpha_{\rm CO}$ is $2.4{\pm}0.5$ M$_\odot$ pc$^{-2}$ (K km s$^{-1}$)$^{-1}$. While both methods show dispersion due to underlying assumptions, the scatter is larger for LTE-derived values. Abstract

The interstellar medium of the Milky Way contains turbulent plasma with structures driven by energetic processes that fuel star formation and shape the evolution of our Galaxy. Radio waves from pulsars are scattered off the small (au-scale and below) structures, resulting in frequency-dependent interference patterns that are modulated in time because of the relative motions of the pulsar, Earth, and plasma. Power spectral analyses of these patterns show parabolic arcs with curvatures that encode the locations and kinematics of individual structures. Here we report the discovery of at least 25 distinct plasma structures in the direction of the brilliant millisecond pulsar, PSR J0437$-$4715, in observations obtained with the MeerKAT radio telescope. Four arcs reveal structures within 5000 au of the pulsar, from a series of shocks induced as the pulsar and its wind interact with the ambient insterstellar medium. The measured radial distance and velocity of the main shock allows us to solve the shock geometry and space velocity of the pulsar in three dimensions, while the velocity of another structure unexpectedly indicates a back flow from the direction of the shock or pulsar-wind tail. Abstract

GPT-4o is an autoregressive omni model that accepts as input any combination of text, audio, image, and video, and generates any combination of text, audio, and image outputs. It's trained end-to-end across text, vision, and audio, meaning all inputs and outputs are processed by the same neural network. GPT-4o can respond to audio inputs in as little as 232 milliseconds, with an average of 320 milliseconds, which is similar to human response time in conversation. It matches GPT-4 Turbo performance on text in English and code, with significant improvement on text in non-English languages, while also being much faster and 50\% cheaper in the API. GPT-4o is especially better at vision and audio understanding compared to existing models. In line with our commitment to building AI safely and consistent with our voluntary commitments to the White House, we are sharing the GPT-4o System Card, which includes our Preparedness Framework evaluations. In this System Card, we provide a detailed look at GPT-4o's capabilities, limitations, and safety evaluations across multiple categories, focusing on speech-to-speech while also evaluating text and image capabilities, and measures we've implemented to ensure the model is safe and aligned. Abstract

Body size drives the energetic demands of organisms, constraining trophic interactions between species and playing a significant role in shaping the feasibility of species' populations in a community. On macroevolutionary timescales, these demands feed back to shape the selective landscape driving the evolution of body size and diet. We develop a theoretical framework for a three-level trophic food chain -- typical for terrestrial mammalian ecosystems -- premised on bioenergetic trade-offs to explore mammalian population dynamics. Our results show that interactions between predators, prey, and external subsidies generate instabilities linked to body size extrema, corresponding to observed limits of predator size and diet. These instabilities generate size-dependent constraints on coexistence and highlight a feasibility range for carnivore size between 40 to 110 kg, encompassing the mean body size of terrestrial Cenozoic hypercarnivores. Finally, we show that predator dietary generalization confers a selective advantage to larger carnivores, which then declines at megapredator body sizes, aligning with diet breadth estimates for contemporary and Pleistocene species. Abstract

Separation of the two mirror images of a chiral molecule, the enantiomers, is a historically complicated problem of major relevance for biological systems. Since chiral molecules are optically active, it has been speculated that strong coupling to circularly polarized fields may be used as a general procedure to unlock enantiospecific reactions. In this work, we focus on how chiral cavities can be used to drive asymmetry in the photochemistry of chiral molecular systems. We first show that strong coupling to circularly polarized fields leads to enantiospecific Rabi splittings, an effect that displays a collective behavior in line with other strong coupling phenomena. Additionally, entanglement with circularly polarized light generates an asymmetry in the enantiomer population of the polaritons, leading to a condensation of the excitation on a preferred molecular configuration. Abstract

We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernova SN 2023ixf, which was observed in the galaxy Messier 101 via optical emission on 2023 May 19th, during the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA 15th Engineering Run. We define a five-day on-source window during which an accompanying gravitational-wave signal may have occurred. No gravitational waves have been identified in data when at least two gravitational-wave observatories were operating, which covered $\sim 14\%$ of this five-day window. We report the search detection efficiency for various possible gravitational-wave emission models. Considering the distance to M101 (6.7 Mpc), we derive constraints on the gravitational-wave emission mechanism of core-collapse supernovae across a broad frequency spectrum, ranging from 50 Hz to 2 kHz where we assume the GW emission occurred when coincident data are available in the on-source window. Considering an ellipsoid model for a rotating proto-neutron star, our search is sensitive to gravitational-wave energy $1 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2$ and luminosity $4 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2/\text{s}$ for a source emitting at 50 Hz. These constraints are around an order of magnitude more stringent than those obtained so far with gravitational-wave data. The constraint on the ellipticity of the proto-neutron star that is formed is as low as $1.04$, at frequencies above $1200$ Hz, surpassing results from SN 2019ejj., Comment: Main paper: 6 pages, 4 figures and 1 table. Abstract

We present 850 {\mu}m thermal dust polarization observations with a resolution of 14.4"(~ 0.13 pc) towards an infrared dark cloud G16.96+0.27 using JCMT/POL-2. The average magnetic field orientation, which roughly agrees with the larger-scale magnetic field orientation traced by the Planck 353 GHz data, is approximately perpendicular to the filament structure. The estimated plane-of-sky magnetic field strength is ~ 96 {\mu}G and ~ 60 {\mu}G using two variants of the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi methods. We calculate the virial and magnetic critical parameters to evaluate the relative importance of gravity, the magnetic field, and turbulence. The magnetic field and turbulence are both weaker than gravity, but magnetic fields and turbulence together are equal to gravity, suggesting that G16.96+0.27 is in a quasi-equilibrium state. The cloud-magnetic-field alignment is found to have a trend moving away from perpendicularity in the dense regions, which may serve as a tracer of potential fragmentation in such quiescent filaments., Comment: Accepted by ApJ. 13 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Estimating the ground-state energy of Hamiltonians is a fundamental task for which it is believed that quantum computers can be helpful. Several approaches have been proposed toward this goal, including algorithms based on quantum phase estimation and hybrid quantum-classical optimizers involving parameterized quantum circuits, the latter falling under the umbrella of the variational quantum eigensolver. Here, we analyze the performance of quantum Boltzmann machines for this task, which is a less explored ansatz based on parameterized thermal states and which is not known to suffer from the barren-plateau problem. We delineate a hybrid quantum-classical algorithm for this task and rigorously prove that it converges to an $\varepsilon$-approximate stationary point of the energy function optimized over parameter space, while using a number of parameterized-thermal-state samples that is polynomial in $\varepsilon^{-1}$, the number of parameters, and the norm of the Hamiltonian being optimized. Our algorithm estimates the gradient of the energy function efficiently by means of a novel quantum circuit construction that combines classical sampling, Hamiltonian simulation, and the Hadamard test, thus overcoming a key obstacle to quantum Boltzmann machine learning that has been left open since [Amin et al., Phys. Rev. X 8, 021050 (2018)]. 24. Criticality of the viscous to inertial transition near jamming in non-Brownian suspensions

Abstract

In this work, we use a Discrete Element Method (DEM) to explore the viscous to inertial shear thickening transition of dense frictionless non-Brownian suspensions close to jamming. This transition is characterized by a change in the steady state rheology of a suspension with increasing shear rate ($\dot{\gamma}$), from a regime of constant viscosity at low shear rates to a regime where the viscosity varies linearly with the shear rate. Through our numerical simulations, we show that the characteristic shear rate associated with this transition depends sensitively on the volume fraction ($\phi$) of the suspension and that it goes to zero as we approach the jamming volume fraction ($\phi_m$) for the system. By attributing the criticality of this transition to a diverging length scale of the microstructure as $\phi \rightarrow \phi_m$, we use a scaling framework to achieve a collapse of the rheological data associated with the viscous to inertial transition. A series of tests conducted on the system size dependence of the rheological results is used to show the existence of this microstructural length-scale that diverges as the suspension approaches jamming and its role in triggering the viscous to inertial transition.

25. A First-look at Spatially-resolved Infrared Supernova Remnants in M33 with JWST

Abstract

We present the first spatially-resolved infrared images of supernova remnants (SNRs) in M33 with the unprecedented sensitivity and resolution of JWST. We analyze 43 SNRs in four JWST fields: two covering central and southern M33 with separate NIRCam (F335M, F444W) and MIRI (F560W, F2100W) observations, one $\sim$5 kpc-long radial strip observed with MIRI F770W, and one covering the giant HII region NGC 604 with multiple NIRCam and MIRI broad/narrowband filters. Of the 21 SNRs in the MIRI field, we found three clear detections (i.e., identical infrared and \ha morphologies), and six partial-detections, implying a detection fraction of 43\% in these bands. In contrast, only one SNR (out of 16) is detectable in the NIRCam field. One of the SNRs, L10-080, is a potential candidate for having freshly-formed ejecta dust, based on its size and centrally-concentrated 21 \mum emission. Two SNRs near NGC 604 have strong evidence of molecular (H$_2$) emission at 4.7 \mum, making them the farthest known SNRs with visible molecular shocks. Five SNRs have F770W observations, with the smaller younger objects showing tentative signs of emission, while the older, larger ones have voids. Multi-wavelength data indicate that the clearly-detected SNRs are also among the smallest, brightest at other wavelengths (\ha, radio and X-ray), have the broadest line widths (H$\alpha$ FWHM$\sim$250-350 km/s), and the densest environments. No strong correlation with star-formation histories are seen, with the clearly-detected SNRs having both high-mass ($\sim$35 \Msun) and low-mass ($\lesssim$10 \Msun) progenitors., Comment: 33 pages, 17 figures, 2 tables, submitted to ApJ

Abstract

A fundamental economic question is that of designing revenue-maximizing mechanisms in dynamic environments. This paper considers a simple yet compelling market model to tackle this question, where forward-looking buyers arrive at the market over discrete time periods, and a monopolistic seller is endowed with a limited supply of a single good. In the case of i.i.d. and regular valuations for the buyers, Board and Skrzypacz (2016) characterized the optimal mechanism and proved the optimality of posted prices in the continuous-time limit. Our main result considers the limit case of a continuum of buyers, establishing that for arbitrary independent buyers' valuations, posted prices and capacity rationing can implement the optimal anonymous mechanism. Our result departs from the literature in three ways: It does not make any regularity assumptions, it considers the case of general, not necessarily i.i.d., arrivals, and finally, not only posted prices but also capacity rationing takes part in the optimal mechanism. Additionally, if supply is unlimited, we show that the rationing effect vanishes, and the optimal mechanism can be implemented using posted prices only, \`a la Board (2008)., Comment: none

Abstract

The magnetar SGR 1935+2154 is the only known Galactic source of fast radio bursts (FRBs). FRBs from SGR 1935+2154 were first detected by CHIME/FRB and STARE2 in 2020 April, after the conclusion of the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA Collaborations' O3 observing run. Here we analyze four periods of gravitational wave (GW) data from the GEO600 detector coincident with four periods of FRB activity detected by CHIME/FRB, as well as X-ray glitches and X-ray bursts detected by NICER and NuSTAR close to the time of one of the FRBs. We do not detect any significant GW emission from any of the events. Instead, using a short-duration GW search (for bursts $\leq$ 1 s) we derive 50\% (90\%) upper limits of $10^{48}$ ($10^{49}$) erg for GWs at 300 Hz and $10^{49}$ ($10^{50}$) erg at 2 kHz, and constrain the GW-to-radio energy ratio to $\leq 10^{14} - 10^{16}$. We also derive upper limits from a long-duration search for bursts with durations between 1 and 10 s. Abstract

The first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) detections at 870$\mu$m wavelength (345$\,$GHz frequency) are reported, achieving the highest diffraction-limited angular resolution yet obtained from the surface of the Earth, and the highest-frequency example of the VLBI technique to date. These include strong detections for multiple sources observed on inter-continental baselines between telescopes in Chile, Hawaii, and Spain, obtained during observations in October 2018. The longest-baseline detections approach 11$\,$G$\lambda$ corresponding to an angular resolution, or fringe spacing, of 19$\mu$as. The Allan deviation of the visibility phase at 870$\mu$m is comparable to that at 1.3$\,$mm on the relevant integration time scales between 2 and 100$\,$s. The detections confirm that the sensitivity and signal chain stability of stations in the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) array are suitable for VLBI observations at 870$\mu$m. Operation at this short wavelength, combined with anticipated enhancements of the EHT, will lead to a unique high angular resolution instrument for black hole studies, capable of resolving the event horizons of supermassive black holes in both space and time., Comment: Corresponding author: S. Abstract

Combining Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array CO(2-1) mapping and JWST near- and mid-infrared imaging, we characterize the relationship between CO(2-1) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission at ~100 pc resolution in 66 nearby star-forming galaxies, expanding the sample size from previous ~100 pc resolution studies by more than an order of magnitude. Focusing on regions of galaxies where most of the gas is likely to be molecular, we find strong correlations between CO(2-1) and 3.3 micron, 7.7 micron, and 11.3 micron PAH emission, estimated from JWST's F335M, F770W, and F1130W filters. We derive power law relations between CO(2-1) and PAH emission, which have indices in the range 0.8-1.2, implying relatively weak variations in the observed CO-to-PAH ratios across the regions that we study. We find that CO-to-PAH ratios and scaling relationships near HII regions are similar to those in diffuse sight lines. The main difference between the two types of regions is that sight lines near HII regions show higher intensities in all tracers. Galaxy centers, on the other hand, show higher overall intensities and enhanced CO-to-PAH ratios compared to galaxy disks. Individual galaxies show 0.19 dex scatter in the normalization of CO at fixed I_PAH and this normalization anti-correlates with specific star formation rate (SFR/M*) and correlates with stellar mass. We provide a prescription that accounts for these galaxy-to-galaxy variations and represents our best current empirical predictor to estimate CO(2-1) intensity from PAH emission, which allows one to take advantage of JWST's excellent sensitivity and resolution to trace cold gas., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables. Abstract

In this article, we will study unbounded solutions of the 2D incompressible Euler equations. One of the motivating factors for this is that the usual functional framework for the Euler equations (e.g. based on finite energy conditions, such as $L^2$) does not respect some of the symmetries of the problem, such as Galileo invariance. Our main result, global existence and uniqueness of solutions for initial data with square-root growth $O(|x|^{\frac{1}{2} - \epsilon})$ and bounded vorticity, is based on two key ingredients. Firstly an integral decomposition of the pressure, and secondly examining local energy balance leading to solution estimates in local Morrey type spaces. We also prove continuity of the initial data to solution map by a substantial adaptation of Yudovich's uniqueness argument.

Abstract

We present resolved $3.6-250~\mu$m dust spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting for $\sim 800$ nearby galaxies. We measure the distribution of radiation field intensities heating the dust, the dust mass surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm d}$), and the fraction of dust in the form of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs; $q_{\rm PAH}$). We find that the average interstellar radiation field ($\overline{U}$) is correlated both with stellar mass surface density ($\Sigma_{\star}$) and star formation rate surface density ($\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$), while more intense radiation fields are only correlated with $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$. We show that $q_{\rm PAH}$ is a steeply decreasing function of $\Sigma_{\rm SFR}$, likely reflecting PAH destruction in H II regions. Galaxy integrated $q_{\rm PAH}$ is strongly, negatively correlated with specific star formation rate (sSFR) and offset from the star-forming ``main sequence'' ($\Delta$MS), suggesting that both metallicity and star formation intensity play a role in setting the global $q_{\rm PAH}$. We also find a nearly constant M$_{\rm d}$/M$_\star$ ratio for galaxies on the main sequence, with a lower ratio for more quiescent galaxies, likely due to their lower gas fractions. From these results, we construct prescriptions to estimate the radiation field distribution in both integrated and resolved galaxies. Abstract

Protecting qubits from environmental noise while maintaining strong coupling for fast high-fidelity control is a central challenge for quantum information processing. Here, we demonstrate a novel control scheme for superconducting fluxonium qubits that eliminates qubit decay through the control channel by reducing the environmental density of states at the transition frequency. Adding a low-pass filter on the flux line allows for flux-biasing and at the same time coherently controlling the fluxonium qubit by parametrically driving it at integer fractions of its transition frequency. We compare the filtered to the unfiltered configuration and find a five times longer $T_1$, and ten times improved $T_2$-echo time in the protected case. We demonstrate coherent control with up to 11-photon sub-harmonic drives, highlighting the strong non-linearity of the fluxonium potential. We experimentally determine Rabi frequencies and drive-induced frequency shifts in excellent agreement with numerical and analytical calculations. Furthermore, we show the equivalence of a 3-photon sub-harmonic drive to an on-resonance drive by benchmarking sub-harmonic gate fidelities above 99.94 %. These results open up a scalable path for full qubit control via a single protected channel, strongly suppressing qubit decoherence caused by control lines., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

This paper introduces the hypothetical track-length fitting algorithm, a novel method for measuring the kinetic energies of ionizing particles in liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). The algorithm finds the most probable offset in track length for a track-like object by comparing the measured ionization density as a function of position with a theoretical prediction of the energy loss as a function of the energy, including models of electron recombination and detector response. The algorithm can be used to measure the energies of particles that interact before they stop, such as charged pions that are absorbed by argon nuclei. The algorithm's energy measurement resolutions and fractional biases are presented as functions of particle kinetic energy and number of track hits using samples of stopping secondary charged pions in data collected by the ProtoDUNE-SP detector, and also in a detailed simulation. Additional studies describe impact of the dE/dx model on energy measurement performance. The method described in this paper to characterize the energy measurement performance can be repeated in any LArTPC experiment using stopping secondary charged pions.

Abstract

Background: The integration of multi-stain histopathology images through deep learning poses a significant challenge in digital histopathology. Current multi-modal approaches struggle with data heterogeneity and missing data. This study aims to overcome these limitations by developing a novel transformer model for multi-stain integration that can handle missing data during training as well as inference. Methods: We propose UNICORN (UNiversal modality Integration Network for CORonary classificatioN) a multi-modal transformer capable of processing multi-stain histopathology for atherosclerosis severity class prediction. The architecture comprises a two-stage, end-to-end trainable model with specialized modules utilizing transformer self-attention blocks. The initial stage employs domain-specific expert modules to extract features from each modality. In the subsequent stage, an aggregation expert module integrates these features by learning the interactions between the different data modalities. Results: Evaluation was performed using a multi-class dataset of atherosclerotic lesions from the Munich Cardiovascular Studies Biobank (MISSION), using over 4,000 paired multi-stain whole slide images (WSIs) from 170 deceased individuals on 7 prespecified segments of the coronary tree, each stained according to four histopathological protocols. UNICORN achieved a classification accuracy of 0.67, outperforming other state-of-the-art models. The model effectively identifies relevant tissue phenotypes across stainings and implicitly models disease progression. Conclusion: Our proposed multi-modal transformer model addresses key challenges in medical data analysis, including data heterogeneity and missing modalities. Explainability and the model's effectiveness in predicting atherosclerosis progression underscores its potential for broader applications in medical research.

Abstract

Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are millisecond-duration events detected from beyond the Milky Way. FRB emission characteristics favor highly magnetized neutron stars, or magnetars, as the sources, as evidenced by FRB-like bursts from a galactic magnetar, and the star-forming nature of FRB host galaxies. However, the processes that produce FRB sources remain unknown. Although galactic magnetars are often linked to core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe), it's uncertain what determines which supernovae result in magnetars. The galactic environments of FRB sources can be harnessed to probe their progenitors. Here, we present the stellar population properties of 30 FRB host galaxies discovered by the Deep Synoptic Array. Our analysis shows a significant deficit of low-mass FRB hosts compared to the occurrence of star-formation in the universe, implying that FRBs are a biased tracer of star-formation, preferentially selecting massive star-forming galaxies. This bias may be driven by galaxy metallicity, which is positively correlated with stellar mass. Metal-rich environments may favor the formation of magnetar progenitors through stellar mergers, as higher metallicity stars are less compact and more likely to fill their Roche lobes, leading to unstable mass transfer. Although massive stars do not have convective interiors to generate strong magnetic fields by dynamo, merger remnants are thought to have the requisite internal magnetic-field strengths to result in magnetars. Abstract

Approximately half of the Universe's dark matter resides in collapsed halos; significantly less than half of the baryonic matter (protons and neutrons) remains confined to halos. A small fraction of baryons are in stars and the interstellar medium within galaxies. The lion's share are diffuse (less than $10^{-3}$ cm$^{-3}$) and ionized (neutral fraction less than $10^{-4}$), located in the intergalactic medium (IGM) and in the halos of galaxy clusters, groups, and galaxies. The quantity and spatial distribution of this diffuse ionized gas is notoriously difficult to measure, but has wide implications for galaxy formation, astrophysical feedback, and precision cosmology. Recently, the dispersion of extragalactic Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) has been used to measure the total content of cosmic baryons. However, past efforts had modest samples and methods that cannot discriminate between IGM and halo gas, which is critical for studying feedback and for observational cosmology. Here, we present a large cosmological sample of FRB sources localized to their host galaxies. We have robustly partitioned the missing baryons into the IGM, galaxy clusters, and galaxies, providing a late-Universe measurement of the total baryon density of $\Omega_b h_{70}$=0.049$\pm$0.003. Our results indicate efficient feedback processes that can expel gas from galaxy halos and into the intergalactic medium, agreeing with the enriched cosmic web scenario seen in cosmological simulations. The large diffuse baryon fraction that we have measured disfavours bottom-heavy stellar initial mass functions, which predict a large total stellar density, $\Omega_*$.

37. Speeding up Quantum Annealing with Engineered Dephasing

Abstract

Building on the insight that engineered noise, specifically, engineered dephasing can enhance the adiabaticity of controlled quantum dynamics, we investigate how a dephasing-generating coupling to an auxiliary quantum system affects quantum annealing protocols. By calculating the exact reduced system dynamics, we show how this coupling enhances the system's adiabaticity solely through a coherent mechanism - an effective energy rescaling. We show that it can lead to an annealing speedup linearly proportional to the strength of the coupling. We discuss the experimental feasibility of the protocols, and investigate the trade-off between fidelity and implementability by examining two modified versions with fewer types of required physical couplings., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Multimode fiber (MMF) imaging aided by machine learning holds promise for numerous applications, including medical endoscopy. A key challenge for this technology is the sensitivity of modal transmission characteristics to environmental perturbations. Here, we show experimentally that an MMF imaging scheme based on a neural network (NN) can achieve results that are significantly robust to thermal perturbations. For example, natural images are successfully reconstructed as the MMF's temperature is varied by up to 50$^{\circ}$C relative to the training scenario, despite substantial variations in the speckle patterns caused by thermal changes. A dense NN with a single hidden layer is found to outperform a convolutional NN suitable for standard computer vision tasks. In addition, we demonstrate that NN parameters can be used to understand the MMF properties by reconstructing the approximate transmission matrices, and we show that the image reconstruction accuracy is directly related to the temperature dependence of the MMF's transmission characteristics., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Recent advances in the study of microstates for 1/16-BPS black holes have inspired renewed interest in the analysis of heavy operators. For these operators, traditional techniques that work effectively in the planar limit are no longer applicable. Methods that are sensitive to finite N effects are required. In particular, trace relations that connect different multi-trace operators must be carefully considered. A powerful approach to tackling this challenge, which utilizes the representation theory of the symmetric group, is provided by restricted Schur polynomials. 40. Description of the first order phase transition region of an equation of state for QCD with a critical point

Abstract

We map the mean-field Ising model equation of state onto the QCD phase diagram, and reconstruct the full coexistence region in the case of a first order phase transition. Beyond the coexistence line, we maintain access to the spinodal region in the phase diagram, thus providing a description of metastable and unstable phases of matter as well. In this way, our approach includes the super-heated hadronic phase and the super-cooled quark-gluon plasma, which are useful for hydrodynamic simulations of the fireball created in a heavy-ion collision at low collision energy, where a first order phase transition is expected. We discuss the features of the pressure and other thermodynamic observables as functions of temperature and baryonic chemical potential, in particular their behavior in the coexistence region. 41. Fast decision tree learning solves hard coding-theoretic problems

Abstract

We connect the problem of properly PAC learning decision trees to the parameterized Nearest Codeword Problem ($k$-NCP). Despite significant effort by the respective communities, algorithmic progress on both problems has been stuck: the fastest known algorithm for the former runs in quasipolynomial time (Ehrenfeucht and Haussler 1989) and the best known approximation ratio for the latter is $O(n/\log n)$ (Berman and Karpinsky 2002; Alon, Panigrahy, and Yekhanin 2009). Research on both problems has thus far proceeded independently with no known connections. We show that $\textit{any}$ improvement of Ehrenfeucht and Haussler's algorithm will yield $O(\log n)$-approximation algorithms for $k$-NCP, an exponential improvement of the current state of the art. This can be interpreted either as a new avenue for designing algorithms for $k$-NCP, or as one for establishing the optimality of Ehrenfeucht and Haussler's algorithm. Furthermore, our reduction along with existing inapproximability results for $k$-NCP already rule out polynomial-time algorithms for properly learning decision trees. 42. A comprehensive theory for relativistic polaritonic chemistry: a four components ab initio treatment of molecular systems coupled to quantum fields

Abstract

We present a new ab-initio approach to study molecules containing heavy atoms strongly interacting with quantum fields in optical devices. The relativistic quantum electrodynamics (QED) theory has been rewritten with a formalism close to relativistic quantum chemistry. This general framework represents the ideal starting point to extend the main quantum chemistry methods to relativistic polaritonic. The Polaritonic Dirac Hartree Fock (Pol-DHF) approach is the first method we propose based on this theory. Pol-DHF allows for the simulation of field induced effects on the ground and excited state properties of heavy transition metals molecular complexes. The method is able to include not only the effects of the photons but can be easily extended also to include explicit interactions with positrons. Application of Pol-DHF to three metal hydrides revealed the importance of including relativistic effects to the treatment in strong coupling conditions. Abstract

The realisation of an universal quantum computer will require the operation of thousands to millions of qubits. The possibility of using existing industrial semiconductor fabrication techniques and infrastructure for up-scaling and reproducibility makes silicon based spin qubits one of the most promising platforms to achieve this goal. The implementation of the up to now largest semiconductor based quantum processor was realized in a silicon/silicon-germanium heterostructure known for its low charge noise, long qubit coherence times and fast driving speeds, but the high structural complexity creates challenges for industrial implementations. Here we demonstrate quantum dots hosted in a natural Si/SiGe heterostructure fully fabricated by an industrial 300$\,$mm semiconductor wafer process line from heterostructure growth to Co micromagnet monolithic integration. We report charge noise values below 2$\,\mathrm{\mu eV/\sqrt{Hz}}$, spin relaxation times of over 1$\,$s and coherence times $T_2^*$ and $T_2^H$ of 1$\,\mathrm{\mu s}$ and 50$\,\mathrm{\mu s}$ respectively, for quantum wells grown using natural silicon. Further, we achieve Rabi frequencies up to 5$\,$MHz and single qubit gate fidelities above 99$\,\%$. In addition to scalability, the high reproducibility of the 300$\,$mm processes enables the deterministic study of qubit metric dependencies on process parameters, which is essential for optimising qubit quality.

44. The Sample Complexity of Smooth Boosting and the Tightness of the Hardcore Theorem

Abstract

Smooth boosters generate distributions that do not place too much weight on any given example. Originally introduced for their noise-tolerant properties, such boosters have also found applications in differential privacy, reproducibility, and quantum learning theory. We study and settle the sample complexity of smooth boosting: we exhibit a class that can be weak learned to $\gamma$-advantage over smooth distributions with $m$ samples, for which strong learning over the uniform distribution requires $\tilde{\Omega}(1/\gamma^2)\cdot m$ samples. This matches the overhead of existing smooth boosters and provides the first separation from the setting of distribution-independent boosting, for which the corresponding overhead is $O(1/\gamma)$. Our work also sheds new light on Impagliazzo's hardcore theorem from complexity theory, all known proofs of which can be cast in the framework of smooth boosting. For a function $f$ that is mildly hard against size-$s$ circuits, the hardcore theorem provides a set of inputs on which $f$ is extremely hard against size-$s'$ circuits. A downside of this important result is the loss in circuit size, i.e. that $s' \ll s$. Abstract

Cerebrovascular disease often requires multiple imaging modalities for accurate diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring. Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA) and Time-of-Flight Magnetic Resonance Angiography (TOF-MRA) are two common non-invasive angiography techniques, each with distinct strengths in accessibility, safety, and diagnostic accuracy. While CTA is more widely used in acute stroke due to its faster acquisition times and higher diagnostic accuracy, TOF-MRA is preferred for its safety, as it avoids radiation exposure and contrast agent-related health risks. Despite the predominant role of CTA in clinical workflows, there is a scarcity of open-source CTA data, limiting the research and development of AI models for tasks such as large vessel occlusion detection and aneurysm segmentation. This study explores diffusion-based image-to-image translation models to generate synthetic CTA images from TOF-MRA input. We demonstrate the modality conversion from TOF-MRA to CTA and show that diffusion models outperform a traditional U-Net-based approach. Our work compares different state-of-the-art diffusion architectures and samplers, offering recommendations for optimal model performance in this cross-modality translation task.

Abstract

Homodyne Quadrature Interferometers (HoQIs) are compact, low noise and high dynamic range displacement sensors designed for use in gravitational wave observatories. Their lower noise compared to the displacement sensors used at present makes them valuable for improving the seismic isolation in current and future detectors. This paper outlines the progression of this sensor from initial production and benchtop tests to in-vacuum static performance and installation in a gravitational wave detector prototype facility. A detailed design description is outlined, including the full signal and optical chain required for implementation in detectors. The measured in-vacuum static performance indicates a noise floor of $3-4\times10^{-13}m/\sqrt{\rm{Hz}}$ at 10Hz. Three HoQIs were installed on the beamsplitter suspension at the AEI 10m prototype. They measured motion of the intermediate mass across the entire bandwidth measured and showed minimal non-linearities and a good robustness to motion in unmeasured degrees of freedom, both important for practical use in dynamic systems such as seismic isolation.

Abstract

Filaments are believed to play a key role in high-mass star formation. We present a systematic study of the filaments and their hosting clumps in the G35 molecular complex using JCMT SCUBA-2 850 $\micron$ continuum data. We identified five clouds in the complex and 91 filaments within them, some of which form 10 hub-filament systems (HFSs), each with at least 3 hub-composing filaments. We also compiled a catalogue of 350 dense clumps, 183 of which are associated with the filaments. We investigated the physical properties of the filaments and clumps, such as mass, density, and size, and their relation to star formation. We find that the global mass-length trend of the filaments is consistent with a turbulent origin, while the hub-composing filaments of high line masses ($m_{\rm l}\,>$\,230\,$\mathrm{M_{\odot}~pc^{-1}}$) in HFSs deviate from this relation, possibly due to feedback from massive star formation. We also find that the most massive and densest clumps (R\,$>$\,0.2\,pc, M\,$>35\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$, $\mathrm{\Sigma}>\,0.05\,\mathrm{g~cm^{-2}}$) are located in the filaments and in the hubs of HFS with the latter bearing a higher probability of occurrence of high-mass star-forming signatures, highlighting the preferential sites of HFSs for high-mass star formation. We do not find significant variation in the clump mass surface density across different evolutionary environments of the clouds, which may reflect the balance between mass accretion and stellar feedback., Comment: 34 pages, 17 figures. Abstract

We propose a novel quantum circuit using superfluid $^3$He, analogous to a superconducting quantum circuit. We design a mesoscopic device which consists of a superfluid Josephson weak-link and mechanical elements. We derive the Hamiltonian and predict the range of parameters in which this device can be operated in the quantum regime. The oscillations of the superfluid in this device are quantized with a well-defined resonance frequency, resolvable at mK temperatures essential to the superfluid state. We suggest an electromechanical coupling scheme for readout and to engineer the nonlinearity in this device. Abstract

Large Language Models (LLMs) frequently lack domain-specific knowledge and even fine-tuned models tend to hallucinate. Hence, more reliable models that can include external knowledge are needed. We present a pipeline, 4StepFocus, and specifically a preprocessing step, that can substantially improve the answers of LLMs. This is achieved by providing guided access to external knowledge making use of the model's ability to capture relational context and conduct rudimentary reasoning by themselves. The method narrows down potentially correct answers by triplets-based searches in a semi-structured knowledge base in a direct, traceable fashion, before switching to latent representations for ranking those candidates based on unstructured data. This distinguishes it from related methods that are purely based on latent representations. 4StepFocus consists of the steps: 1) Triplet generation for extraction of relational data by an LLM, 2) substitution of variables in those triplets to narrow down answer candidates employing a knowledge graph, 3) sorting remaining candidates with a vector similarity search involving associated non-structured data, 4) reranking the best candidates by the LLM with background data provided. Experiments on a medical, a product recommendation, and an academic paper search test set demonstrate that this approach is indeed a powerful augmentation. It not only adds relevant traceable background information from information retrieval, but also improves performance considerably in comparison to state-of-the-art methods. This paper presents a novel, largely unexplored direction and therefore provides a wide range of future work opportunities. 50. Help Wanted: Next Steps in Addressing the United States' Teacher Shortage

Abstract

The COVID-19 global pandemic impacted the United States' educational landscape by intensifying the teacher shortage. In particular, significant help is wanted in filling public school vacancies in specialty areas, which has resulted in non-instructional staff teaching in classrooms and impacting school operations. Federal, state, and local education agencies are taking steps to attract teacher candidates and retain current teachers, but will these efforts be enough? Education preparation programs are making changes to their programs to ensure they support teacher candidates while obtaining their initial teaching license. This article will define the teacher shortage, explain the impact of the pandemic, and discuss action steps being implemented to address the teacher shortage. The article will showcase insights from scholarly literature, observations, and document analysis. The purpose of this article is to provide a review of the relevant literature exploring actions being implemented at the federal, state, and local levels to address the teacher shortage. By reviewing these steps, education agencies and teacher preparation programs can evaluate their future actionable steps to recruit and retain teachers.
