Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
We present a benchmark study for the adsorption of a large pi-conjugated organic molecule on different noble metal surfaces, which is based on X-ray standing wave (XSW) measurements and density functional theory calculations with van der Waals (vdW) interactions. The bonding distances of diindenoperylene on Cu(111), Ag(111), and Au(111) surfaces (2.51 A, 3.01 A, and 3.10 A, respectively) determined with the normal incidence XSW technique are compared with calculations. Excellent agreement with the experimental data, i.e. deviations less than 0.1 A, is achieved using the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof functional with vdW interactions that include the collective response of substrate electrons (PBE+vdW^{surf} method). Noteworthy, the calculations show that the vdW contribution to the adsorption energy increases in the order Au(111) < Ag(111) < Cu(111)., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, accepted by Phys. Rev. B

Adsorption of organic molecules on well-oriented single crystal coinage metal surfaces fundamentally affects the energy distribution curve of ultra-violet photoelectron spectroscopy spectra. New features not present in the spectrum of the pristine metal can be assigned as "interface states" having some degree of molecule-substrate hybridization. Here it is shown that interface states having molecular orbital character can easily be identified at low binding energy as isolated features above the featureless substrate sp-plateau. On the other hand much care must be taken in assigning adsorbate-induced features when these lie within the d-band spectral region of the substrate. In fact, features often interpreted as characteristic of the molecule-substrate interaction may actually arise from substrate photoelectrons scattered by the adsorbates. This phenomenon is illustrated through a series of examples of noble-metal single-crystal surfaces covered by monolayers of large pi-conjugated organic molecules.

Physics - Plasma Physics ,Physics - Computational Physics - Abstract
The Particle-in-Cell (PIC) method was used to study two different ion thruster concepts - Stationary Plasma Thrusters (SPT) and High Efficiency Multistage Plasma Thrusters (HEMP-T), in particular the plasma properties in the discharge chamber due to the different magnetic field configurations. Special attention was paid to the simulation of plasma particle fluxes on the thrusters channel surfaces. In both cases, PIC proved itself as a powerful tool, delivering important insight into the basic physics of the different thruster concepts. The simulations demonstrated that the new HEMP thruster concept allows for a high thermal efficiency due to both minimal energy dissipation and high acceleration efficiency. In the HEMP thruster the plasma contact to the wall is limited only to very small areas of the magnetic field cusps, which results in much smaller ion energy flux to the thruster channel surface as compared to SPT. The erosion yields for dielectric discharge channel walls of SPT and HEMP thrusters were calculated with the binary collision code SDTrimSP. For SPT, an erosion rate on the level of 1 mm of sputtered material per hour was observed. For HEMP, thruster simulations have shown that there is no erosion inside the dielectric discharge channel., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures This work was presented at 21st International Conference on Numerical Simulation of Plasmas (ICNSP'09)

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
We study the adsorption geometry of 3,4,9,10-perylene-tetracarboxylic-dianhydride (PTCDA) on Ag(111) and Cu(111) using X-ray standing waves. The element-specific analysis shows that the carbon core of the molecule adsorbs in a planar configuration, whereas the oxygen atoms experience a non-trivial and substrate dependent distortion. On copper (silver) the carbon rings resides 2.66 A (2.86 A) above the substrate. In contrast to the conformation on Ag(111), where the carboxylic oxygen atoms are bent towards the surface, we find that on Cu(111) all oxygen atoms are above the carbon plane at 2.73 A and 2.89 A, respectively., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figure pages, 2 tables

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
A fast second level trigger has been developed for the ARGUS experiment which recognizes tracks originating from the interaction region. The processor compares the hits in the ARGUS Micro Vertex Drift Chamber to 245760 masks stored in random access memories. The masks which are fully defined in three dimensions are able to reject tracks originating in the wall of the narrow beampipe of 10.5\,mm radius., Comment: gzipped Postscript, 27 pages

no topic specified - Abstract
Two dimensional MXenes, with Ti3C2Tx being the most prominent member, show properties that make them promising for a manifold of applications, including electrodes in light emitting diodes, solar cells, and field effect transistors based on organic semiconductors. In these cases, the work function of MXenes plays an important role in the energy level alignment to the subsequently deposited organic layer, as it determines the electron and hole injection barriers. Therefore, methods for controlling the Ti3C2Tx work function should be developed. We demonstrate that, by using thin layers of metal organic donor acceptor molecules, the work function of Ti3C2Tx can be tuned over a range of gt;3 eV. This enables tuning the energy level alignment to a subsequently deposited organic semiconductor, all the way from intrinsic Fermi level pinning at the highest occupied molecular energy level minimal hole injection barrier to pinning at the lowest unoccupied level minimal electron injection barrier . Furthermore, it is shown that a predominantly oxygen terminated surface does not lead to an extraordinary high work function, in contrast to theoretical predictions. The proposed strategy may greatly expand the use of MXenes in conjunction with organic hole and electron transport layers in optoelectronic devices

27. Gulf Hydrogen Horizons. Why are Gulf oil and gas producers so keen on hydrogen?
- Author
-
Koch, N.
- Abstract
This paper examines the recent interest in hydrogen energy among political and economic leaders in the oil and gas producing states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Although key stakeholders continue to reinforce the fossil fuel systems that have defined the region’s political economy for decades, they increasingly recognize that the hydrocarbon era is drawing to a close. This has led to an increase in various “post-oil” energy investments, which most recently include hydrogen energy. This discussion paper examines why this is the case – that is, why the GCC’s political and corporate leaders are keen on promoting hydrogen energy systems in the region. It shows that the aspiration to produce “green” hydrogen – originating in Europe and Germany in particular – is increasingly seen as a way to broadcast the region’s green credentials, while simultaneously supporting the investments in “blue” hydrogen promoted by the state-owned hydrocarbon giants in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

28. Wasserstoffzukünfte in der Golfregion. Warum setzen Öl- und Gasproduzenten am Golf auf Wasserstoff?

- Abstract

SURFACE states ,SEMICONDUCTOR doping ,ORGANIC semiconductors ,SEMICONDUCTOR junctions ,ELECTRON energy states - Abstract
In applications, surface states and bulk doping concentration are important parameters of inorganic semiconductors, as they determine the bulk properties and substantially influence the properties of interfaces in devices, foremost the electron energy level alignment. In this work, we provide a qualitative model to describe the influence of surface state density and bulk donor concentration on the work function increase upon deposition of strong organic molecular acceptors onto the surface of n-doped inorganic semiconductors. This work function increase due to electron transfer to the molecular layer has two contributions: the formation of an interface dipole and a change of the near-surface space charge region inside the inorganic semiconductor, referred to as surface band bending. By using different surface preparation methods, we show how the surface state density limits the surface band bending change and enhances the interface dipole, both measured independently by photoelectron spectroscopy. In addition, we show that bulk donor concentration variation of the inorganic semiconductor has minor influence on the ratio of the two contributions to the work function change, at least for low to moderate donor concentrations up to 10

Van der Waals heterostructures consisting of 2D semiconductors and conjugated molecules are of increasing interest because of the prospect of a synergistic enhancement of opto electronic properties. In particular, perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride PTCDA on monolayer ML MoS2 has been identified as promising candidate and a staggered type II energy level alignment and excited state interfacial charge transfer have been proposed. In contrast, it is here found with inverse and direct angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy that PTCDA ML MoS2 supported by insulating sapphire exhibits a straddling type I level alignment, with PTCDA having the wider energy gap. Photoluminescence PL and sub picosecond transient absorption measurements reveal that resonance energy transfer, i.e., electron hole pair exciton transfer, from PTCDA to ML MoS2 occurs on a sub picosecond time scale. This gives rise to an enhanced PL yield from ML MoS2 in the heterostructure and an according overall modulation of the photoresponse. These results underpin the importance of a precise knowledge of the interfacial electronic structure in order to understand excited state dynamics and to devise reliable design strategies for optimized optoelectronic functionality in van der Waals heterostructures
