Studying optoelectronic properties in FAPb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$I$_3$ perovskites as a function of the lead:tin content, Parrott et al. observed the broadest luminescence linewidth and the largest luminescence Stokes shift in mixed compositions with Sn $ < 25$% and with $> 0.85$%. Since the largest effects of alloy disorder were expected for the 50:50 composition, it was concluded that the revealed disorder effects might arise from extrinsic factors that can be eliminated upon further crystal growth optimization. This comment shows that the largest effects of alloy disorder for perfectly random fluctuations in FAPb$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$I$_3$ perovskite are, in fact, expected for $x < 0.25$ and for $x > 0.85$. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz TDS) is a well-known tool for material analysis in the terahertz frequency band. One crucial system component in every time-domain spectrometer is the delay line which is necessary to accomplish the sampling of the electric field over time. Despite the fact that most of the uncertainty sources in TDS have been discussed, the delay line uncertainty has not been considered in detail. We model the impact of delay line uncertainty on the acquired THz TDS data. Interferometric measurements of the delay line precision and THz time-domain data are used to validate the theoretical model., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

An increasing number of lung cancer patients are receiving outpatient chemotherapy. However, little is known about gender aspects in the areas of impaired QoL in outpatient versus inpatient lung cancer patients. The aim of the study was to investigate this.Methods: We report from a prospective, multicenter study to analyze the EORTC QLQ-LC29, a new designed module to assess the QoL of lung cancer patients. The participants filled out the EORTC QLQ-C30 and the recently updated lung cancer module QLQ-LC29.Results: A total of 198 lung cancer patients (73 female and 125 male, mean 64.5 age years) during first-line therapy were enrolled in this study by completing the both questionnaires. Women showed higher symptom scores, when being inpatient. Significant results were found regarding nausea/vomiting (mean women = 17.6 and mean men = 9.3, p = 0.037) and hair loss (mean women = 40.0 and mean men = 21.7, p = 0.010), although women received fewer chemotherapy treatments than their male counterparts (women n = 47, 64.4% and men n = 86, 68.8%). When it comes to global QoL, men report a significant worse QoL than women (mean women = 57.5 and mean men = 46.1, p = 0.016), when being inpatient. As outpatients, men report significant results regarding sore mouth and tongue (mean women = 1.2 and mean men = 13.5, p = 0.012).Conclusion: This study adds to the literature in showing the typical gender difference effect on QoL, suggesting men suffer less than women, is not a universal phenomenon irrespective of being inpatient or outpatient. Gender differences were calculated for all QoL scores using ANCOVAs, which controlled for confounders.Results: A total of 130 patients with metastatic lung cancer (UICC stage IV) (46 female and 84 male, mean age 66 years) were enrolled in this study by completing the questionnaires. The only significant gender difference in QoL was found regarding hair loss (mean women= 42.498, mean men=25.490, p-value= 0.010), although women received fewer chemotherapy treatments than men (women n=34, 74% and men n=68, 84%).Conclusion: This study provides evidence that the typical cancer related gender difference effect on QoL, suggesting that men suffer less than women, cannot be found in metastatic tumor stages of lung cancer patients.Keywords: metastatic lung cancer, gender differences, quality of life, EORTC QLQ-C30/QLQ-LC29

For solid-state spin qubits, single-gate RF readout can help minimise the number of gates required for scale-up to many qubits since the readout sensor can integrate into the existing gates required to manipulate the qubits (Veldhorst 2017, Pakkiam 2018). However, a key requirement for a scalable quantum computer is that we must be capable of resolving the qubit state within single-shot, that is, a single measurement (DiVincenzo 2000). Here we demonstrate single-gate, single-shot readout of a singlet-triplet spin state in silicon, with an average readout fidelity of $82.9\%$ at a $3.3~\text{kHz}$ measurement bandwidth. We use this technique to measure a triplet $T_-$ to singlet $S_0$ relaxation time of $0.62~\text{ms}$ in precision donor quantum dots in silicon. We also show that the use of RF readout does not impact the maximum readout time at zero detuning limited by the $S_0$ to $T_-$ decay, which remained at approximately $2~\text{ms}$. This establishes single-gate sensing as a viable readout method for spin qubits.

Self-mode-locking has become an emerging path to the generation of ultrashort pulses with vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting lasers. In our work, a strong Kerr nonlinearity that is so far assumed to give rise to mode-locked operation is evidenced and a strong nonlinearity enhancement by the microcavity is revealed. We present wavelength-dependent measurements of the nonlinear absorption and nonlinear-refractive-index change in a gain chip using the Z-scan technique. We report negative nonlinear refraction up to 1.5E-11 cm2/W in magnitude in the (InGa)As/Ga(AsP) material system close to the laser design wavelength, which can lead to Kerr lensing. We show that by changing the angle of incidence of the probe beam with respect to the gain chip, the Kerr nonlinearity can be wavelength-tuned, shifting with the microcavity resonance. Such findings may ultimately lead to novel concepts with regard to tailored self-mode-locking behavior achievable by peculiar Kerr-lens chip designs for cost-effective, robust and compact fs-pulsed semiconductor lasers.

25. Obstacles to Promoting Growth Mindset in a Streamed Mathematics Course: 'It's Like Confirming They Can't Make the Cut'

In this study, we consider the experiences of a professional learning community (PLC) who focused on fostering growth mindset to improve learning in a lower-stream grade 9 mathematics course. Using a sociocultural theoretical lens and drawing on data from a two-year case study, we summarize the ways that PLC members fostered growth mindset and then more deeply explore the obstacles they encountered. Participants found that shifting from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset required changes to the ways they taught mathematics. Even with these changes, shifting mindsets about mathematics learning proved more challenging than they expected. PLC members shared the view that the process was impeded by: students' ingrained fixed mindsets, views of mathematics as a right or wrong subject, assessment practices focused on grading, the need to overcome their own fixed mindsets, and the streamed nature of the course. Through sustained collaboration, they found ways to begin to address these obstacles, with the notable exception of streaming. This study provides evidence of the ways streaming can inhibit the efficacy of a growth mindset initiative and offers suggestions for teachers, schools, and divisions planning to implement a growth mindset initiative to improve mathematics learning in similar contexts.

Ultrafast dynamical processes in photoexcited molecules can be observed with pump-probe measurements, in which information about the dynamics is obtained from the transient signal associated with the excited state. Background signals provoked by pump and/or probe pulses alone often obscure these excited state signals. Simple subtraction of pump-only and/or probe-only measurements from the pump-probe measurement, as commonly applied, results in a degradation of the signal-to-noise ratio and, in the case of coincidence detection, the danger of overrated background subtraction. Coincidence measurements additionally suffer from false coincidences. Here we present a probabilistic approach based on Bayesian probability theory that overcomes these problems. For a pump-probe experiment with photoelectron-photoion coincidence detection we reconstruct the interesting excited-state spectrum from pump-probe and pump-only measurements. This approach allows to treat background and false coincidences consistently and on the same footing. We demonstrate that the Bayesian formalism has the following advantages over simple signal subtraction: (i) the signal-to-noise ratio is significantly increased, (ii) the pump-only contribution is not overestimated, (iii) false coincidences are excluded, (iv) prior knowledge, such as positivity, is consistently incorporated, (v) confidence intervals are provided for the reconstructed spectrum, and (vi) it is applicable to any experimental situation and noise statistics. Most importantly, by accounting for false coincidences, the Bayesian approach allows to run experiments at higher ionization rates, resulting in a significant reduction of data acquisition times. The application to pump-probe coincidence measurements on acetone molecules enables novel quantitative interpretations about the molecular decay dynamics and fragmentation behavior.

The transfer of mechanical signals through cells is a complex phenomenon. To uncover a new mechanotransduction pathway, we study the frequency-dependent transport of mechanical stimuli by single microtubules and small networks in a bottom-up approach using optically trapped beads as anchor points. We interconnected microtubules to linear and triangular geometries to perform micro-rheology by defined oscillations of the beads relative to each other. We found a substantial stiffening of single filaments above a characteristic transition frequency of 1-30 Hz depending on the filament's molecular composition. Below this frequency, filament elasticity only depends on its contour and persistence length. Interestingly, this elastic behavior is transferable to small networks, where we found the surprising effect that linear two filament connections act as transistor-like, angle dependent momentum filters, whereas triangular networks act as stabilizing elements. These observations implicate that cells can tune mechanical signals by temporal and spatial filtering stronger and more flexibly than expected.

The participants filled in the EORTC QLQ-C30, the recently updated lung cancer module QLQ-LC29 and the Hornheide questionnaire (HSI).Results: A total of 81 patients (32 female and 49 male, mean age 65.2 years, SD = 9.7) were enrolled in this study by completing the questionnaires. Fatigue (mean 55.4, SD = 26.3) and dyspnea (mean 46.3, SD = 36.2) were the most prominent symptoms. Thirty-nine patients (48.1%) according to the HSI needed psychosocial support. When using the EORTC questionnaires as screening instrument with 50 as cut-off in contrast only 29.5% of our patients needed psychosocial support. The need for psychosocial support according to the HSI correlated most with the EORTC scales “fatigue” (38.3% overlap between the two questionnaires), “existential fear” (38.3% overlap between the two questionnaires) and worse “global quality of life” (27.2% overlap between the two questionnaires).Conclusion: If psychosocial distress is at the core, the HSI is a suitable instrument for quick screening. The EORTC measures help to specify impaired quality of life areas and also cover somatic symptoms that are specific for cancer patients. Once psychosocial distress has been ascertained, clinicians should be particularly aware of specific problems regarding “fatigue”, “existential fear” and diminished “global quality of life”.Trial Registration: clinicaltrials.gov, reference number NCT02745691. - Abstract
Glioblastoma (GB) is the most common and aggressive brain tumor. The treatment for newly diagnosed glioblastoma is surgical resection of the primary tumor mass, followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. However, recurrences frequently occur in proximity to the surgical resection area. In these cases, none of the current therapies is effective. Recently, implantable biomaterials seem to be a promising strategy against GB recurrence. Here, for the first time we combined the tailorable properties of soy-protein hydrogels with the versatility of drug-loaded liposomes to realize a hybrid biomaterial for controlled and sustained nanoparticles release. Hydrogel consisting of 18–20 % w/v soy-protein isolated were fabricated in absence of chemical cross-linkers. They were biodegradable (−10 % and −30 % of weight by hydrolytic and enzymatic degradation, respectively in 3 days), biocompatible (>95 % of cell viability after treatment), and capable of sustained release of intact doxorubicin-loaded liposomes (diffusion coefficient between 10−18 and 10 −19 m2 s−1). A proof-of-concept in a “donut-like” 3D-bioprinted model shows that liposomes released by hydrogels were able to diffuse in a model with a complex extracellular matrix-like network and a 3D structural organization, targeting glioblastoma cells. The combination of nanoparticles' encapsulation capabilities with the hydrogels' structural support and controlled release properties will provide a powerful tool with high clinical relevance that could be applicable for the treatment of other cancers, realizing patient-specific interventions.

OBJECTIVE: Free tissue transfer has an established place in oncologic head and neck surgery. However, the necessity and specific regimen of perioperative thromboprophylaxis remain controversial. Here, the risk of postoperative hemorrhage contrasts with vascular pedicle thrombosis and graft loss. This work compares three different heparin protocols (AC) with regard to postoperative complications. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of our free flap transplants between 2004 and 2023 was conducted. Inclusion criteria were thromboprophylaxis with (A) 500 IU/h unfractionated heparin (UFH), (B) low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) once daily, and (C) LMWH once daily with additional immediate preoperative administration. Primary endpoints were the incidence of postoperative bleeding and hematoma and the appearance of flap thrombosis. RESULTS: We evaluated 355 cases, 87 in group A, 179 in group B, and in group C 89 patients. Overall, postoperative bleeding occurred in 8.7% of patients, and 83% underwent hemostasis under intubation anesthesia, with no significant difference between groups (p = 0.784). Hematoma formation requiring revision was found in 3.7% of patients (p = 0.660). We identified postoperative hematoma as a significant influencing factor for venous pedicle thrombosis (OR 3.602; p = 0.001). Venous and arterial flap thrombosis in the graft vessel showed no difference between the groups (p = 0.745 and p = 0.128). CONCLUSIONS: The three anticoagulation regimens appear to be equivalent therapy for the prevention of thrombosis without significant differences in postoperative bleeding. The use of LMWH with additional preoperative administration can, therefore, be administered in free flap reconstruction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
