We present X-ray to radio frequency observations of the bright long gamma-ray burst GRB 210702A. Our ALMA 97.5 GHz observations show a significant rebrightening by a factor of ~2 beginning at 8.2 days post-burst and rising to peak brightness at 18.1 days before declining again. This is the first such rebrightening seen in a millimeter afterglow light curve. A standard forward shock model in a stellar wind circumburst medium can explain most of our X-ray, optical and millimeter observations prior to the rebrightening, but significantly over-predicts the self-absorbed radio emission, and cannot explain the millimeter rebrightening. We investigate possible explanations for the millimeter rebrightening and find that energy injection or a reverse shock from a late-time shell collision are plausible causes. Similar to other bursts, our radio data may require alternative scenarios such as a thermal electron population or a structured jet to explain the data. Our observations demonstrate that millimeter light curves can exhibit some of the rich features more commonly seen in optical and X-ray afterglow light curves, motivating further millimeter wavelength studies of GRB afterglows., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Blazars are a highly variable subclass of active galactic nuclei that have been observed to vary significantly during a single night. This intranight variability remains a debated phenomenon, with various mechanisms proposed to explain the behaviour including jet energy density evolution or system geometric changes. We present the results of an intranight optical monitoring campaign of four blazars: TXS 0506+056, OJ287, PKS 0735+178, and OJ248 using the Carlos S\'anchez Telescope. We detect significant but colourless behaviour in OJ287 and both bluer- and redder-when-brighter colour trends in PKS 0735+178. Additionally, the g band shows a lag of ~10 min with respect to the r,i,z_s bands for PKS 0735+178 on 2023 January 17. This unexpected hard-lag in PKS 0735+178 is not in accordance with the standard synchrotron shock cooling model (which would predict a soft lag) and instead suggests the variability may be a result of changes in the jet's electron energy density distribution, with energy injection from Fermi acceleration processes into a post-shocked medium., Comment: 19 pages, 19 figures, 5 tables

GRB 221009A ($z=0.151$) is one of the closest known long $\gamma$-ray bursts (GRBs). Its extreme brightness across all electromagnetic wavelengths provides an unprecedented opportunity to study a member of this still-mysterious class of transients in exquisite detail. We present multi-wavelength observations of this extraordinary event, spanning 15 orders of magnitude in photon energy from radio to $\gamma$-rays. We find that the data can be partially explained by a forward shock (FS) from a highly-collimated relativistic jet interacting with a low-density wind-like medium. Under this model, the jet's beaming-corrected kinetic energy ($E_K \sim 4\times10^{50}$ erg) is typical for the GRB population. The radio and mm data provide strong limiting constraints on the FS model, but require the presence of an additional emission component. From equipartition arguments, we find that the radio emission is likely produced by a small amount of mass ($\lesssim6\times10^{-7} M_\odot$) moving relativistically ($\Gamma\gtrsim9$) with a large kinetic energy ($\gtrsim10^{49}$ erg). However, the temporal evolution of this component does not follow prescriptions for synchrotron radiation from a single power-law distribution of electrons (e.g. in a reverse shock or two-component jet), or a thermal electron population, perhaps suggesting that one of the standard assumptions of afterglow theory is violated. Very long base interferometry (VLBI) radio images recently proved to be essential in breaking the degeneracy in the ejecta model for the neutron star merger GW170817. We discuss the properties of synthetic radio images of merger jet afterglows by using semi-analytic models of laterally spreading or non-spreading jets. The image centroid initially moves away from the explosion point in the sky with apparent superlumianal velocity. After reaching a maximum displacement its motion is reversed. This behavior is in line with that found in full hydrodynamics simulations. We show that the evolution of the centroid shift and image size are significantly different when lateral spreading is considered. For Gaussian jet models with plausible model parameters, the morphology of the laterally spreading jet images is much closer to circular. The maximum displacement of the centroid shift and its occurrence time are smaller/earlier by a factor of a few for spreading jets. Our results indicate that it is crucial to include lateral spreading effects when analyzing radio images of neutron star merger jets. We also obtain the viewing angle $\theta_{\rm obs}$ by using the centroid shift of radio images provided the ratio of the jet core size $\theta_{c}$ and $\theta_{\rm obs}$ is determined by afterglow light curves. We show that a simple method based on a point-source approximation provides reasonable angular estimates ($10-20\%$ errors at most). By taking a sample of laterally spreading structured Gaussian jets, we obtain $\theta_{\rm obs} \sim 0.32$ for GW 170817, consistent with previous studies., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures. Deci-hertz Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (DECIGO) is the future Japanese space mission with a frequency band of 0.1 Hz to 10 Hz. DECIGO aims at the detection of primordial gravitational waves, which could be produced during the inflationary period right after the birth of the universe. There are many other scientific objectives of DECIGO, including the direct measurement of the acceleration of the expansion of the universe, and reliable and accurate predictions of the timing and locations of neutron star/black hole binary coalescences. DECIGO consists of four clusters of observatories placed in the heliocentric orbit. Each cluster consists of three spacecraft, which form three Fabry-Perot Michelson interferometers with an arm length of 1,000 km. Three clusters of DECIGO will be placed far from each other, and the fourth cluster will be placed in the same position as one of the three clusters to obtain the correlation signals for the detection of the primordial gravitational waves. We plan to launch B-DECIGO, which is a scientific pathfinder of DECIGO, before DECIGO in the 2030s to demonstrate the technologies required for DECIGO, as well as to obtain fruitful scientific results to further expand the multi-messenger astronomy., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

We present comprehensive multiwavelength radio to X-ray observations of GRB 181201A spanning from $\approx150$ s to $\approx163$ days after the burst, comprising the first joint ALMA-VLA-GMRT observations of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglow. The radio and mm-band data reveal a distinct signature at $\approx3.9$ days, which we interpret as reverse shock (RS) emission. Our observations present the first time that a single radio-frequency spectral energy distribution can be decomposed directly into RS and forward shock (FS) components. We perform detailed modeling of the full multiwavelength data set, using Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling to construct the joint posterior density function of the underlying physical parameters describing the RS and FS synchrotron emission. We uncover and account for all degeneracies in the model parameters. The joint RS-FS modeling reveals a weakly magnetized ($\sigma\approx3\times10^{-3}$), mildly relativistic RS, from which we derive an initial bulk Lorentz factor of $\Gamma_0\approx103$ for the GRB jet. Our results support the hypothesis that low-density environments are conducive to the observability of RS emission. We compare our observations to other events with strong RS detections, and find a likely observational bias selecting for longer lasting, non-relativistic reverse shocks. We present ALMA 97.5 GHz total intensity and linear polarization observations of the mm-band afterglow of GRB 190114C spanning 2.2 to 5.2 hours after the burst. We detect linear polarization at the $\approx 5\,\sigma$ level, decreasing from $\Pi=(0.87\pm0.13)\%$ to $(0.60\pm0.19)\%$, and evolving in polarization position angle from $(10\pm5)^\circ$ to $(-44\pm12)^\circ$ during the course of the observations. This represents the first detection of polarized millimeter emission in a $\gamma$-ray burst. We show that the optical and X-ray observations between $0.03$ days and $\sim0.3$ days are consistent with a fast cooling forward shock expanding into a wind environment. However, the optical observations at $\lesssim0.03$ days, as well as the radio and millimeter observations arise from a separate component, which we interpret as emission from the reverse-shocked ejecta. Using the measured linear polarization, we constrain the coherence scale of tangled magnetic fields in the ejecta to an angular size of $\theta_{\rm B} \approx10^{-3}$ radian, while the rotation of the polarization angle rules out the presence of large scale, ordered axisymmetric magnetic fields, and in particular a large scale toroidal field, in the jet., Comment: Published in ApJ Letters

The afterglows to gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are due to synchrotron emission from shocks generated as an ultra-relativistic outflow decelerates. A forward and a reverse shock will form, however, where emission from the forward shock is well studied as a potential counterpart to gravitational wave-detected neutron star mergers the reverse shock has been neglected. Here, we show how the reverse shock contributes to the afterglow from an off-axis and structured outflow. The off-axis reverse shock will appear as a brightening feature in the rising afterglow at radio frequencies. For bursts at $\sim100$ Mpc, the system should be inclined $\lesssim20^\circ$ for the reverse shock to be observable at $\sim0.1-10$ days post-merger. For structured outflows, enhancement of the reverse shock emission by a strong magnetic field within the outflow is required for the emission to dominate the afterglow at early times. Early radio photometry of the afterglow could reveal the presence of a strong magnetic field associated with the central engine., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures. We present detailed multi-wavelength observations of GRB 161219B at $z=0.1475$, spanning the radio to X-ray regimes, and the first ALMA light curve of a GRB afterglow. The cm- and mm-band observations before $8.5$ d require emission in excess of that produced by the afterglow forward shock (FS). These data are consistent with radiation from a refreshed reverse shock (RS) produced by the injection of energy into the FS, signatures of which are also present in the X-ray and optical light curves. We infer a constant-density circumburst environment with an extremely low density, $n_0\approx 3\times10^{-4}$ cm$^{-3}$ and show that this is a characteristic of all strong RS detections to date. The VLA observations exhibit unexpected rapid variability on $\sim$ minute timescales, indicative of strong interstellar scintillation. The X-ray, ALMA, and VLA observations together constrain the jet break time, $t_{\rm jet}\approx32$ day, yielding a wide jet opening angle of $\theta_{\rm jet}\approx13^{\circ}$, implying beaming corrected $\gamma$-ray and kinetic energies of $E_{\gamma}\approx4.9\times10^{48}$ erg and $E_{\rm K}\approx1.3\times10^{50}$ erg, respectively. Comparing the RS and FS emission, we show that the ejecta are only weakly magnetized, with relative magnetization, $R_{\rm B}\approx1$, compared to the FS. These direct, multi-frequency measurements of a refreshed RS spanning the optical to radio bands highlight the impact of radio and millimeter data in probing the production and nature of GRB jets., Comment: 23 pages, 17 figures, 9 tables. We present Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array radio observations of the long gamma-ray burst GRB 161219B ($z=0.147$) spanning $1-37$ GHz. The data exhibit unusual behavior, including sharp spectral peaks and minutes-timescale large-amplitude variability centered at $20$ GHz and spanning the full frequency range. We attribute this behavior to scattering of the radio emission by the turbulent ionized Galactic interstellar medium (ISM), including both diffractive and refractive scintillation. However, the scintillation is much stronger than predicted by a model of the Galactic electron density distribution (NE2001); from the measured variability timescale and decorrelation bandwidth we infer a scattering measure of $SM\approx {(8-70)\times 10^{-4}}$ kpc m$^{-20/3}$ (up to ${25}$ times larger than predicted in NE2001) and a scattering screen distance of $d_{\rm scr}\approx {0.2-3}$ kpc. We infer an emission region size of $\theta_s \approx {0.9-4}$ $\mu$as ($\approx {(1-4)}\times 10^{16}$ cm) at $\approx4$ days, and find that prior to 8 days the source size is an order of magnitude smaller than model predictions for a uniformly illuminated disk or limb-brightened ring, indicating a slightly off-axis viewing angle or significant substructure in the emission region. Simultaneous multi-hour broadband radio observations of future GRB afterglows will allow us to characterize the scintillation more completely, and hence to probe the observer viewing angle, the evolution of the jet Lorentz factor, the structure of the afterglow emission regions, and ISM turbulence at high Galactic latitudes., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, 1 table. The grand challenges of contemporary fundamental physics---dark matter, dark energy, vacuum energy, inflation and early universe cosmology, singularities and the hierarchy problem---all involve gravity as a key component. And of all gravitational phenomena, black holes stand out in their elegant simplicity, while harbouring some of the most remarkable predictions of General Relativity: event horizons, singularities and ergoregions. The hitherto invisible landscape of the gravitational Universe is being unveiled before our eyes: the historical direct detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration marks the dawn of a new era of scientific exploration. Gravitational-wave astronomy will allow us to test models of black hole formation, growth and evolution, as well as models of gravitational-wave generation and propagation. It will provide evidence for event horizons and ergoregions, test the theory of General Relativity itself, and may reveal the existence of new fundamental fields. The synthesis of these results has the potential to radically reshape our understanding of the cosmos and of the laws of Nature. We discuss the properties of stellar mass black hole (BH) mergers induced by tidal encounters with a massive BH at galactic centres or potentially in dense star clusters. The tidal disruption of stellar binaries by a massive BH is known to produce hypervelocity stars. However, such a tidal encounter does not always lead to the break-up of binaries. Since surviving binaries tend to become hard and eccentric, this process can produce BH mergers in principle. For initially circular binaries, we show that the gravitational wave (GW) merger times become shorter by a factor of more than $10^{2}$ ($10^5$) in $10\%$ ($1\%$) of the surviving cases. This reduction is primarily due to the growth in binary's eccentricity at the tidal encounter. We also investigate the effective spins of the survivors, assuming that BH spins are initially aligned with the binary orbital angular momentum. We find that binary orientations can flip in the opposite direction at the tidal encounter. For the survivors with large merger time reduction factors, the effective spin distribution is rather flat. We estimate the merger rate due to the tidal encounter channel to be $\sim 0.6\ \textrm{Gpc}^{-3}\textrm{yr}^{-1}$. This mechanism is unlikely to be the dominant formation channel of BH mergers. However, the current and near-future GW observatories are expected to detect an enormous number of BH mergers. If mergers are found in the vicinity of massive BHs (e.g. the detection of GW lensing echoes or preceding extreme-mass-ratio bursts), this mechanism would provide a possible explanation for their origin., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures. Binary stars that are on close orbits around massive black holes (MBH) such as Sgr A* in the center of the Milky Way are liable to undergo tidal disruption and eject a hypervelocity star. We study the interaction between such a MBH and circular binaries for general binary orientations and penetration depths (i.e. binaries penetrate into the tidal radius around the BH). We show that for very deep penetrators, all binaries are disrupted when the binary rotation axis is roughly oriented toward the BH or it is in the opposite direction. The surviving chance becomes significant when the angle between the binary rotation axis and the BH direction is between \pi /4 and 3 \pi /4. The surviving chance is as high as $\sim$ 20$\%$ when the binary rotation axis is perpendicular to the BH direction. The angular dependence is opposite for very shallow penetrators where coplanar prograde orbits have the lowest surviving chance (or equivalently most vulnerable). We provide numerical fits to the disruption probability and energy gain at the the BH encounter as a function of the penetration depth. The latter can be simply rescaled in terms of binary masses, their initial separation and the binary-to-BH mass ratio to evaluate the ejection velocity of a binary members in various systems. We also investigate the disruption of coplanar, eccentric binaries by a MBH. It is shown that for highly eccentric binaries retrograde orbits have a significantly increased disruption probability and ejection velocities compared to the circular binaries.

Compact object mergers are promising candidates for the progenitor system of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Using gravitational wave (GW) triggers to identify a merger, any electromagnetic (EM) counterparts from the jet can be used to constrain the dynamics and structure of short GRB jets. GW triggered searches could reveal a hidden population of optical transients associated with the short-lived jets from the merger object. If the population of merger-jets is dominated by low-Lorentz-factors, then a GW triggered search will reveal the on-axis orphan afterglows from these failed GRBs. By considering the EM counterparts from a jet, with or without the prompt GRB, the jet structure and dynamics can be constrained. By modelling the afterglow of various jet structures with viewing angle, we provide observable predictions for the on- and off- axis EM jet counterparts. Orphan afterglows from short $\gamma$-ray bursts (GRB) are potential candidates for electromagnetic (EM) counterpart searches to gravitational wave (GW) detected neutron star or neutron star black hole mergers. Various jet dynamical and structure models have been proposed that can be tested by the detection of a large sample of GW-EM counterparts. We make predictions for the expected rate of optical transients from these jet models for future survey telescopes, without a GW or GRB trigger. A sample of merger jets is generated in the redshift limits $0\leq z\leq 3.0$, and the expected peak $r$-band flux and timescale above the LSST or ZTF detection threshold, $m_r=24.5$ and $20.4$ respectively, is calculated. General all-sky rates are shown for $m_r\leq26.0$ and $m_r\leq21.0$. The detected orphan and GRB afterglow rate depends on jet model, typically $16\lesssim R\lesssim 76$ yr$^{-1}$ for the LSST, and $2\lesssim R \lesssim 8$ yr$^{-1}$ for ZTF. An excess in the rate of orphan afterglows for a survey to a depth of $m_r\leq26$ would indicate that merger jets have a dominant low-Lorentz factor population, or the jets exhibit intrinsic jet structure. {\it Fermi}/GBM (Gamma-ray Burst Monitor) and INTEGRAL (the International Gamma-ray Astrophysics Laboratory) reported the detection of the $\gamma$-ray counterpart, GRB 170817A, to the LIGO (Light Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory)/{\it Virgo} gravitational wave detected binary neutron star merger, GW 170817. GRB 170817A is likely to have an internal jet or another origin such as cocoon emission, shock-breakout, or a flare from a viscous disc. In this paper, we assume that the $\gamma$-ray emission is caused by energy dissipation within a relativistic jet and we model the afterglow synchrotron emission from a reverse- and forward-shock in the outflow. We show the afterglow for a low-luminosity $\gamma$-ray burst (GRB) jet with a high Lorentz-factor ($\Gamma$); a low-$\Gamma$ and low-kinetic energy jet; a low-$\Gamma$, high kinetic energy jet; structured jets viewed at an inclination within the jet-half-opening angle; and an off-axis `typical' GRB jet. All jet models will produce observable afterglows on various timescales. The late-time afterglow from 10-110 days can be fit by a Gaussian structured jet viewed at a moderate inclination, however, the GRB is not directly reproduced by this model. We show the peak magnitude for orphan afterglows from the jets of gravitational wave (GW) detected black-hole/neutron star - neutron star (BH/NS-NS) mergers highly depends on the jet half-opening angle $\theta_j$. Short $\gamma$-ray bursts (GRB) with a homogeneous jet structure and $\theta_j>10^\circ$, the orphan afterglow viewed at the typical inclination for a GW detected event, 38$^\circ$, is brighter at optical frequencies than the comparable macronova emission. Structured jets, where the energetics and Lorentz factor $\Gamma$ vary with angle from the central axis, may have low-$\Gamma$ components where the prompt emission is suppressed; GW electromagnetic (EM) counterparts may reveal a population of failed-GRB orphan afterglows. Using a Monte Carlo method assuming a NS-NS detection limit we show the fraction of GW-EM counterparts from homogeneous, two-component, power-law structured, and Gaussian jets where the variable structure models include a wide low energy and $\Gamma$ component: for homogeneous jets, with a {$\theta_j=6^\circ$ and typical short GRB parameters, we find {\it r}-band magnitude $m_r\leq21$ counterparts for $\sim 13.6\%$ of GW detected mergers; where jet structure extends to a half-opening angle of $25^\circ$, two-component jets produce $m_r\leq21$ counterparts in $\sim30\%$ of GW detected mergers; power-law structured jets result in $\sim37\%$; and Gaussian jets with our parameters $\sim13\%$.} We show the features in the lightcurves from orphan afterglows can be used to indicate the presence of extended structure., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We show that the jet power $P_j$ and geometrically corrected $\gamma$-ray luminosity $L_\gamma$ for the X-ray binaries (XRBs) Cygnus X-1, Cygnus X-3, and V404 Cygni, and $\gamma$-ray upper limits for GRS 1915+105 and GX339-4, follow the universal scaling for the energetics of relativistic jets from black hole (BH) systems found by Nemmen et al. (2012) for blazars and GRBs. The observed peak $\gamma$-ray luminosity for XRBs is geometrically corrected; and the minimum jet power is estimated from the peak flux density of radio flares and the flare rise time. The $L_\gamma-P_j$ correlation holds across $\sim 17$ orders of magnitude. The correlation suggests a jet origin for the high energy emission from X-ray binaries, and indicates a common mechanism or efficiency for the high energy emission 0.1-100 GeV from all relativistic BH systems., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures. Compact binary mergers, with neutron stars or neutron star and black-hole components, are thought to produce various electromagnetic counterparts: short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) from ultra-relativistic jets followed by broadband afterglow; semi-isotropic kilonova from radioactive decay of r-process elements; and late time radio flares; etc. If the jets from such mergers follow a similar power-law distribution of Lorentz factors as other astrophysical jets then the population of merger jets will be dominated by low-{\Gamma} values. The prompt gamma-rays associated with short GRBs would be suppressed for a low-{\Gamma} jet and the jet energy will be released as X-ray/optical/radio transients when a shock forms in the ambient medium. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we study the properties of such transients as candidate electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational wave sources detectable by LIGO/Virgo. We present the second multi-frequency radio detection of a reverse shock in a $\gamma$-ray burst. By combining our extensive radio observations of the Fermi-LAT GRB 160509A at $z = 1.17$ up to $20$ days after the burst with Swift X-ray observations and ground-based optical and near-infrared data, we show that the afterglow emission comprises distinct reverse shock and forward shock contributions: the reverse shock emission dominates in the radio band at $\lesssim10~$days, while the forward shock emission dominates in the X-ray, optical, and near-infrared bands. Through multi-wavelength modeling, we determine a circumburst density of $n_0\approx10^{-3}~$cm$^{-3}$, supporting our previous suggestion that a low-density circumburst environment is conducive to the production of long-lasting reverse shock radiation in the radio band. We infer the presence of a large excess X-ray absorption column, $N_{\rm H} \approx 1.5\times10^{22}~$cm$^{-2}$, and a high rest-frame optical extinction, $A_{\rm V}\approx3.4~$mag. We identify a jet break in the X-ray light curve at $t_{\rm jet}\approx6~$d, and thus derive a jet opening angle of $\theta_{\rm jet}\approx4~$deg, yielding a beaming-corrected kinetic energy and radiated $\gamma$-ray energy of $E_{\rm K}\approx4\times10^{50}~$erg and $E_{\gamma}\approx1.3\times10^{51}~$erg ($1$-$10^4~$keV, rest frame), respectively. Short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are believed to be produced by relativistic jets from mergers of neutron-stars (NS) or neutron-stars and black-holes (BH). If the Lorentz-factors $\Gamma$ of jets from compact-stellar-mergers follow a similar power-law distribution to those observed for other high-energy astrophysical phenomena (e.g. blazars, AGN), the population of jets would be dominated by low-$\Gamma$ outflows. These jets will not produce the prompt gamma-rays, but jet energy will be released as x-ray/optical/radio transients when they collide with the ambient medium. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we study the properties of such transients. Approximately $78\%$ of merger-jets $<300~$Mpc result in failed-GRBs if the jet $\Gamma$ follows a power-law distribution of index $-1.75$. X-ray/optical transients from failed-GRBs will have broad distributions of their characteristics: light-curves peak $t_p\sim0.1-10~$days after a merger; flux peaks for x-ray $10^{-6}{\rm~mJy}\lesssim~F_x\lesssim10^{-2}~$mJy; and optical flux peaks at $14\lesssim~m_g\lesssim22$. X-ray transients are detectable by Swift XRT, and $\sim85\%$ of optical transients will be detectable by telescopes with limiting magnitude $m_g \gtrsim 21$, for well localized sources on the sky. X-ray/optical transients are followed by radio transients with peak times narrowly clustered around $t_p\sim10~$days, and peak flux of $\sim~10-100~$mJy at 10 GHz and $\sim~0.1~$mJy at 150 MHz. By considering the all-sky rate of short GRBs within the LIGO/Virgo range, the rate of on-axis orphan afterglows from failed-GRB would be 2.6(26) per year for NS-NS(NS-BH) mergers, respectively. Since merger jets from gravitational-wave (GW) trigger events tend to be directed to us, a significant fraction of GW events could be associated with the on-axis orphan afterglow., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures. A new class of ultra-long duration (>10,000 s) gamma-ray bursts has recently been suggested. They may originate in the explosion of stars with much larger radii than normal long gamma-ray bursts or in the tidal disruptions of a star. No clear supernova had yet been associated with an ultra-long gamma-ray burst. Here we report that a supernova (2011kl) was associated with the ultra-long duration burst 111209A, at z=0.677. This supernova is more than 3 times more luminous than type Ic supernovae associated with long gamma-ray bursts, and its spectrum is distinctly different. The continuum slope resembles those of super-luminous supernovae, but extends farther down into the rest-frame ultra-violet implying a low metal content. The light curve evolves much more rapidly than super-luminous supernovae. The combination of high luminosity and low metal-line opacity cannot be reconciled with typical type Ic supernovae, but can be reproduced by a model where extra energy is injected by a strongly magnetized neutron star (a magnetar), which has also been proposed as the explanation for super-luminous supernovae., Comment: Table 1 only in printed version

We consider the process of stellar binaries tidally disrupted by a supermassive black hole. For highly eccentric orbits, as one star is ejected from the three-body system, the companion remains bound to the black hole. Hypervelocity stars (HVSs) observed in the Galactic halo and S-stars observed orbiting the central black hole may originate from such mechanism. In this paper, we predict the velocity distribution of the ejected stars of a given mass, after they have travelled out of the Galactic potential. We use both analytical methods and Monte Carlo simulations. We find that each part of the velocity distribution encodes different information. At low velocities < 800 km/s, the Galactic Potential shapes universally the observed distribution, which rises towards a peak, related to the Galactic escape velocity. Beyond the peak, the velocity distribution depends on binary mass and separation distributions. Finally, the finite star life introduces a break related to their mass. A qualitative comparison of our models with current observations shows the great potential of HVSs to constrain bulge and Galactic properties. Standard choices for parameter distributions predict velocities below and above ~800 km/s with equal probability, while none are observed beyond ~700 km/s and the current detections are more clustered at low velocities 300-400 km/s. These features may indicate that the separation distribution of binaries that reach the tidal sphere is not flat in logarithmic space, as observed in more local massive binaries, but has more power towards larger separations, enhancing smaller velocities. In addition, the binary formation/evolution process or the injection mechanism might also induce a cut-off at ~ 10 solar radii in the separation distribution., Comment: ApJ, 795, 125. We discuss the results of the analysis of multi-wavelength data for the afterglows of GRB 081007 and GRB 090424, two bursts detected by Swift. One of them, GRB 081007, also shows a spectroscopically confirmed supernova, SN 2008hw, which resembles SN 1998bw in its absorption features, while the maximum luminosity is only about half as large as that of SN 1998bw. Bright optical flashes have been detected in both events, which allows us to derive solid constraints on the circumburst-matter density profile. This is particularly interesting in the case of GRB 081007, whose afterglow is found to be propagating into a constant-density medium, yielding yet another example of a GRB clearly associated with a massive star progenitor which did not sculpt the surroundings with its stellar wind. There is no supernova component detected in the afterglow of GRB 090424, likely due to the brightness of the host galaxy, comparable to the Milky Way. We show that the afterglow data are consistent with the presence of both forward- and reverse-shock emission powered by relativistic outflows expanding into the interstellar medium. The absence of optical peaks due to the forward shock strongly suggests that the reverse shock regions should be mildly magnetized. The initial Lorentz factor of outflow of GRB 081007 is estimated to be \Gamma ~ 200, while for GRB 090424 a lower limit of \Gamma > 170 is derived. We also discuss the prompt emission of GRB 081007, which consists of just a single pulse. We argue that neither the external forward-shock model nor the shock-breakout model can account for the prompt emission data and suggest that the single-pulse-like prompt emission may be due to magnetic energy dissipation of a Poynting-flux dominated outflow or to a dissipative photosphere., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Interferometric detectors will very soon give us an unprecedented view of the gravitational-wave sky, and in particular of the explosive and transient Universe. Now is the time to challenge our theoretical understanding of short-duration gravitational-wave signatures from cataclysmic events, their connection to more traditional electromagnetic and particle astrophysics, and the data analysis techniques that will make the observations a reality. The relative strength between forward and reverse shock emission in early gamma-ray burst afterglow reflects that of magnetic energy densities in the two shock regions. We numerically show that with the current standard treatment, the fireball magnetization is underestimated by up to two orders of magnitude. This discrepancy is especially large in the sub-relativistic reverse shock regime (i.e. the thin shell and intermediate regime) where most optical flashes were detected. We provide new analytic estimates of the reverse shock emission based on a better shock approximation, which well describe numerical results in the intermediate regime. We show that the reverse shock temperature at the onset of afterglow is constant, $(\bar{\Gamma}_d-1)\sim 8\times10^{-2}$, when the dimensionless parameter $\xi_{0}$ is more than several. We study the tidal disruption of binaries by a massive point mass (e.g. the black hole at the Galactic center), and we discuss how the ejection and capture preference between unequal-mass binary members depends on which orbit they approach the massive object. We show that the restricted three-body approximation provides a simple and clear description of the dynamics. The orbit of a binary with mass m around a massive object M should be almost parabolic with an eccentricity |1-e| < (m/M)^{1/3} << 1 for a member to be captured, while the other is ejected. Indeed, the energy change of the members obtained for a parabolic orbit can be used to describe non-parabolic cases. If a binary has an encounter velocity much larger than (M/m)^{1/3} times the binary rotation velocity, it would be abruptly disrupted, and the energy change at the encounter can be evaluated in a simple disruption model. We evaluate the probability distributions for the ejection and capture of circular binary members and for the final energies. In principle, for any hyperbolic (elliptic) orbit, the heavier member has more chance to be ejected (captured), because it carries a larger fraction of the orbital energy. However, if the orbital energy is close to zero, the difference between the two members becomes small, and there is practically no ejection and capture preference. The preference becomes significant when the orbital energy is comparable to the typical energy change at the encounter. Motivated by detections of hypervelocity stars that may originate from the Galactic Center, we revist the problem of a binary disruption by a passage near a much more massive point mass. The six order of magnitude mass ratio between the Galactic Center black hole and the binary stars allows us to formulate the problem in the restricted parabolic three-body approximation. In this framework, results can be simply rescaled in terms of binary masses, its initial separation and binary-to-black hole mass ratio. Consequently, an advantage over the full three-body calculation is that a much smaller set of simulations is needed to explore the relevant parameter space. Contrary to previous claims, we show that, upon binary disruption, the lighter star does not remain preferentially bound to the black hole. In fact, it is ejected exactly in 50% of the cases. Nonetheless, lighter objects have higher ejection velocities, since the energy distribution is independent of mass. Focusing on the planar case, we provide the probability distributions for disruption of circular binaries and for the ejection energy. We show that even binaries that penetrate deeply into the tidal sphere of the black hole are not doomed to disruption, but survive in 20% of the cases. Nor do these deep encounters produce the highest ejection energies, which are instead obtained for binaries arriving to 0.1-0.5 of the tidal radius in a prograde orbit. Despite the pre-Swift expectation that bright optical flashes from reverse shocks would be prevalent in early-time afterglow emission, rapid response observations show this not to be the case. Although very bright at early times, some GRBs such as GRB 061007 and GRB 060418, lack the short-lived optical flash from the reverse shock within minutes after the GRB. In contrast, other optical afterglows, such as those of GRB 990123, GRB 021211, GRB 060111B, GRB 060117, GRB 061126, and recently GRB 080319B, show a steep-to-flat transition within first 10^3 s typical of a rapidly evolving reverse + forward shock combination. We review the presence and absence of the reverse shock components in optical afterglows and discuss the implications for the standard model and the magnetization of the fireball. We show that the previously predicted optical flashes are likely to occur at lower wavelengths, perhaps as low as radio wavelengths and, by using the case of GRB 061126 we show that the magnetic energy density in the ejecta, expressed as a fraction of the equipartion value, is a key physical parameter., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures. We report the optical polarization of a gamma ray burst (GRB) afterglow, obtained 203 seconds after the initial burst of gamma rays from GRB 060418, using a ring polarimeter on the robotic Liverpool Telescope. Our robust (2-sigma) upper limit on the percentage of polarization, less than 8%, coincides with the fireball deceleration time at the onset of the afterglow. The combination of the rate of decay of the optical brightness and the low polarization at this critical time constrains standard models of GRB ejecta, ruling out the presence of a large-scale ordered magnetic field in the emitting region., Comment: 8 pages including 1 figure. We use a 3-D relativistic SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) code to study mergers of black hole -- neutron star (BH--NS) binary systems with low mass ratios, adopting $M_{NS}/M_{BH} \simeq 0.1$ as a representative case. The outcome of such mergers depends sensitively on both the magnitude of the BH spin and its obliquity (i.e., the inclination of the binary orbit with respect to the equatorial plane of the BH). In particular, only systems with sufficiently high BH spin parameter $a$ and sufficiently low orbital inclinations allow any NS matter to escape or to form a long-lived disk outside the BH horizon after disruption. Mergers of binaries with orbital inclinations above $\sim60^o$ lead to complete prompt accretion of the entire NS by the BH, even for the case of an extreme Kerr BH. We find that the formation of a significant disk or torus of NS material around the BH always requires a near-maximal BH spin and a low initial inclination of the NS orbit just prior to merger., Comment: to appear in ApJ, 54 pages, 19 figures

We systematically analyze the prompt emission and the early afterglow data of a sample of 31 GRBs detected by {\em Swift} before September 2005, and estimate the GRB radiative efficiency. BAT's narrow band inhibits a precise determination of the GRB spectral parameters, and we have developed a method to estimate these parameters with the hardness ratio information. The shallow decay component commonly existing in early X-ray afterglows, if interpreted as continuous energy injection in the external shock, suggests that the GRB efficiency previously derived from the late-time X-ray data were not reliable. We calculate two radiative efficiencies using the afterglow kinetic energy E_K derived at the putative deceleration time t_{dec}) and at the break time (t_b) when the energy injection phase ends, respectively. At t_b XRFs appear to be less efficient than normal GRBs. However, when we analyze the data at t_{dec} XRFs are found to be as efficient as GRBs. Short GRBs have similar radiative efficiencies to long GRBs despite of their different progenitors. Twenty-two bursts in the sample are identified to have the afterglow cooling frequency below the X-ray band. Assuming \epsilon_e = 0.1, we find \eta_\gamma(t_b) usually <10% and \eta_\gamma (t_{dec}) varying from a few percents to > 90%. Nine GRBs in the sample have the afterglow cooling frequency above the X-ray band for a very long time. We discuss the reference time t_0 of afterglow light curves in the context of the standard internal-external shock model. The decay index of early afterglow is very sensitive to the reference time one chooses. In order to understand the nature of early afterglow, it is essential to take a correct reference time. Our simple analytic model provides a framework to understand special relativistic effects involved in early afterglow phase. We evaluate light curves of reverse shock emission as well as those of forward shock emission, based on full hydrodynamic calculations. We show that the reference time does not shift significantly even in the thick shell case. For external shock emission components, measuring times from the beginning of the prompt emission is a good approximation and it does not cause an early steep decay. In the thin shell case, the energy transfer time from fireball ejecta to ambient medium typically extends to thousands of seconds. The unique capability of the Swift satellite to perform a prompt and autonomous slew to a newly detected Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) has yielded the discovery of interesting new properties of GRB X-ray afterglows, such as the steep early lightcurve decay and the frequent presence of flares detected up to a few hours after the GRB trigger. We present observations of GRB 050607, the fourth case of a GRB discovered by Swift with flares superimposed on the overall fading X-ray afterglow. The flares of GRB 050607 were not symmetric as in previously reported cases, showing a very steep rise and a shallower decay, similar to the Fast Rise, Exponential Decay that are frequently observed in the gamma-ray prompt emission. The brighter flare had a flux increase by a factor of approximately 25,peaking for 30 seconds at a count rate of approximately 30 counts s-1, and it presented hints of addition short time scale activity during the decay phase. There is evidence of spectral evolution during the flares. In particular, at the onset of the flares the observed emission was harder, with a gradual softening as each flare decayed. The very short time scale and the spectral variability during the flaring activity are indicators of possible extended periods of energy emission by the GRB central engine. The flares were followed by a phase of shallow decay, during which the forward shock was being refreshed by a long-lived central engine or by shells of lower Lorentz factors, and by a steepening after approximately 12 ks to a decay slope considered typical of X-ray afterglows., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures, Accepted by the Astrophysical Journal

(Abridged) The Swift X-Ray Telescope (XRT) reveals some interesting features of early X-ray afterglows, including a distinct rapidly decaying component preceding the conventional afterglow component in many sources, a shallow decay component before the more ``normal'' decay component observed in a good fraction of GRBs (e.g. GRB 050128, GRB 050315, GRB 050319, and GRB 050401), and X-ray flares in nearly half of the afterglows (e.g. GRB 050406, GRB 050502B, GRB 050607, and GRB 050724). In this paper, we systematically analyze the possible physical processes that shape the properties of the early X-ray afterglow lightcurves, and use the data to constrain various models. We suggest that the steep decay component is consistent with the tail emission of the prompt gamma-ray bursts and/or of the X-ray flares. This provides clear evidence that the prompt emission and afterglow emission are two distinct components, supporting the internal origin of the GRB prompt emission. The shallow decay segment observed in a group of GRBs suggests that the forward shock keeps being refreshed for some time. This might be caused either by a long-lived central engine, or by a power law distribution of the shell Lorentz factors, or else by the deceleration of a Poynting flux dominated flow. X-ray flares suggest that the GRB central engine is still active after the prompt gamma-ray emission is over, but with a reduced activity at later times. In some cases, the central engine activity even extends days after the burst trigger. Analyses of early X-ray afterglow data reveal that GRBs are indeed highly relativistic events. We study synchrotron self-inverse Compton radiation from a reverse-shocked fireball. If the inverse Compton process dominates the cooling of shocked electrons, an X-ray flare produced by the first order Compton scattering would emerge in the very early afterglow phase, with the bulk of the shock energy radiated in the second order scattering component at 10-100 MeV. The dominance of inverse Compton cooling leads to the lack of prompt optical flashes. We show that for plausible parameters this scattering process can produce an X-ray flare with a relative amplitude change by a factor of several. Lyutikov (astro-ph/0503505) raised a valid point that for shock deceleration of a highly magnetized outflow, the fate of the magnetic fields after shock crossing should be considered. However, his comment that the deceleration radius should be defined by the total energy rather than by the baryonic kinetic energy is incorrect. As strictly derived from the shock jump conditions in Zhang & Kobayashi (2005), during the reverse shock crossing process the magnetic energy is not tapped. As a result, the fireball deceleration radius is defined by the baryonic energy only. The magnetic energy is expected to be transferred to the circumburst medium after the reverse shock disappears. The evolution of the system then mimicks a continuously-fed fireball. As a result, Lyutikov's naive conclusion that the forward shock dynamics is independent on the ejecta content is also incorrect. We estimate the high energy neutrino flux from the giant flare of SGR 1806-20 on December 27, 2004, which irradiated Earth with a gamma-ray flux ~10^4 times larger than the most luminous gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) ever detected. The Antarctic Cherenkov neutrino detector AMANDA was on-line during the flare, and may either have detected high energy neutrinos for the first time from a cosmic point source, or put constraints on the flare mechanism of magnetars. We review recent progress in understanding the hydrodynamics of compact binary mergers using relativistic smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) codes. Recent results are discussed for both double neutron stars and black hole - neutron star binaries. The gravitational wave signals from these mergers contain a lot of information about the masses and radii of the stars and the equation of state of the neutron star fluid. The Swift Gamma-Ray Burst Explorer, launched on 2004 November 20, is a multiwavelength, autonomous, rapid-slewing observatory for gamma-ray burst (GRB) astronomy. On 2004 December 23, during the activation phase of the mission, the Swift X-Ray Telescope (XRT) was pointed at a burst discovered earlier that day by the Swift Burst Alert Telescope. A fading, uncataloged X-ray source was discovered by the XRT and was observed over a period of about 3 hours, beginning 4.6 hours after the burst. The X-ray detection triggered a VLT observation of the optical/NIR counterpart, located about 1.1 arcseconds from the XRT position. The X-ray counterpart faded rapidly, with a power law index of -1.72 +/- 0.20. The average unabsorbed X-ray flux 4.6-7.9 hours after the burst was 6.5 x 10^{-12} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1} in the 0.5-10 keV band, for a power-law spectrum of photon index 2.02 +/- 0.13 with Galactic absorption. The NIR counterpart was observed at three epochs between 16 and 87 hours after the burst, and faded with a power-law index of -1.14 +/- 0.08 with a reddening-corrected SED power-law slope of -0.40 +/- 0.03. We find that the X-ray and NIR data are consistent with a two-component jet in a wind medium, with an early jet break in the narrow component and an underlying electron index of 1.8-2.0., Comment: 16 pages, including 4 figures. We investigate the role of the bulk Compton-scattering process in the internal shock model. We numerically show that the radiation field created by internal shocks does not affect the efficiency of the energy conversion in the shocks even if fireball outflows have highly nonuniform velocity distributions. However, the bulk Compton-scattering produces an additional high energy component especially when variability in the outflows arises because of a modulation of the mass injected into a constant energy flow. We show that an isotropic energy of $10^{50-51}$ ergs could be radiated in the range of 100MeV-GeV through the scattering process, provided that the shell's Lorentz factor varies between 10 and $10^4$., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJL
