Photon yields in damp air excited by an electron using a Sr90 $\beta$ source are compared withthose in dry air. Water vapors considerably reduce the yields, however, a further study is needed to evaluate the effects on the energy estimation of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays. The air fluorescence technique is used to detect ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR), and to estimate their energy. Of fundamental importance is the photon yield due to excitation by electrons, in air of various densities and temperatures. After our previous report, the experiment has been continued using a Sr90 $\beta$ source to study the pressure dependence of photon yields for radiation in nitrogen and dry air. The photon yields in 15 wave bands between 300 nm and 430 nm have been determined. The total photon yield between 300 nm and 406 nm (used in most experiments) in air excited by a 0.85 MeV electron is 3.81+-0.13 (+-13 % systematics) photons per meter at 1013 hPa and 20 $^{\circ}$C. In order to detect ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECR), atmospheric fluorescence light from the trajectory of the extensive air shower may be measured by mirror-photosensor systems. In this type of experiment the photon yield from electrons exciting air of various densities and temperatures is most fundamental information for estimating the primary energy of UHECR. An experiment has been undertaken using a Sr90 $\beta$ source to study the pressure dependence of photon yields, and the life times of the excited states, for radiation in nitrogen and dry air. The photon yield between 300 nm and 406 nm in air excited by 0.85 MeV electrons is 3.73+-0.15 (+-14% systematic) photons per meter at 1000 hPa and 20 $^{\circ}$C. We examine the first order Fermi acceleration on the presumption that supernova remnant shocks cross ambient magnetic fields with various angles. These oblique shocks accelerate particles more efficiently than the parallel shocks and elevate the maximum energies achievable by the particles. The primary cosmic ray spectrum is strongly dependent upon these energies. We also consider the dependence of the injection efficiency and of spectral indices on obliquity. When indices and absolute fluxes at $10^{12}$ eV are given for six nuclear groups from balloon-borne data, each energy spectrum develops a smooth rigidity dependent knee structure. The resultant total spectrum also behaves similarly and fits well with ground-based experimental data up to several $10^{17}$ eV. It is shown as well that the chemical composition changes significantly from lighter to heavier nuclei as the energies of particles exceed the knee region. We point out the possibility to detect the low-energy signals of moduli in the superstring theory through the neutrino oscillation. The idea is based on the characteristics that the couplings of moduli are different from matter to matter. We estimate the oscillation probability both in the baseline and solar neutrino oscillations. In both cases, when there is at least one modulus of which mass is less than or equal to $10^{-19}$ GeV, the interaction of the modulus significantly changes the conversion probability from one neutrino flavor to another., Comment: 17pages, Latex, 3 figures (available from the author upon request by FAX or mail)

When the high energy primary cosmic rays enter near the solar surface, they pass through a thick matter but having a low density. If the density and path length satisfy an appropriate condition, the primaries collide with the constituents near the solar sphere (almost protons) and produce pions and kaons, most of which decay into mu plus nu sub mu without successive hadron collisions. Muons also decay into NU sub mu and NU sub e before reaching the Earth. The neutrino flux of which the producer is matter near the solar surface is computed by solving cascade diffusion equations. The calculated differential flux of muon neutrino at 1 TeV is 1 X 10 to the minus 13 power (GeV. cm square centimeters 2.s.ster)(-1) which is rather difficult to be observed in the present apparatuses or DUMAND.

The study of the energy loss of high energy muons through different materials, such as rock and sea-water can cast light on characteristics of lepton interactions. There are less ambiguities for the values of atomic number (Z) and mass number (A) in sea-water than in rock. Muon intensities should be measured as fundamental data and as background data for searching the fluxes of neutrino. The average range energy relation in sea-water is derived. The correction factors due to the range fluctuation is also computed. By applying these results, the intensities deep under sea are converted from a given muon energy spectra at sea-level. The spectra of conventional muons from eta, K decays have sec theta enhancement. The spectrum of prompt muons from charmed particles is almost isotropic. The effect of prompt muons is examined.
