Abstract Inverse nodal problems for Sturm–Liouville equations associated with boundary conditions polynomially dependent on the spectral parameter are studied. The authors show that a twin-dense subset WB([a,b]) $W_{B}([a,b])$ can uniquely determine the operator up to a constant translation of eigenparameter and potential, where [a,b] $[a,b]$ is an arbitrary interval which contains the middle point of the domain of the operator and B is a subset of N $\mathbb {N}$ which satisfies some condition (see Theorem 4.2).

A multi-attribute decision-making (MADM) approach was proposed in this study as a prediction method that differs from the conventional production and design methods for a product. When a client has different dimensional requirements, this approach can quickly provide a company with design decisions for each product. The production factors of a product are usually complex and difficult to predict. A focus group that comprises seven professional product designers was formed in this study to determine those exact assessment criteria based on their practical experiences of pneumatic door closer designs. These criteria include operability, manufacturability, style, creativity, and cost. We recommend using grey-level designs to assess and resolve the product design and production planning problems. A case study on pneumatic door closers was conducted and a weighted value was assigned to each of the assessment criteria. New product series were created for the verification of the proposed design approach. In a grey-level design assessment, the design ideas of clients and designers are represented by grey levels. After that, a grey relational analysis is used to determine those factors that are valued by clients for predicting the priority of each of the design elements for a product series. The proposed approach can assist designers in predicting a product's design quality and recommend the optimal alternative within a product series.

A method was proposed in this study for assessing the interface operating efficiency of a remote control. The operating efficiency of a product interface can be determined by the proposed approach in which the related dimensions of human palms were measured. The reachable range (blue zone) and the most comfortable range (green zone) were investigated when a user used a single hand (right hand) to operate the remote controls. After that, new remote control designs were created based on the measurement results and the operating efficiency of commercially available remote controls were determined for comparison. The operating efficiency is determined by calculating the overall distance of finger movements when manipulating the buttons and the overall operation time was recorded. The subjects who joined the body measurements and performed the experiments are right-hander Asian college students between the ages of 22 and 28. After further optimization, the reachable range became more average during one-handed operations and those frequently used keys were included into the comfortable range. The resulting operating efficiency performance is higher than commercially available products. The results serve as a good reference for detailed modifications of the products or for the decision making of design proposals.

Purpose: CSMed® wound dressing, a dressing with various herb extracts, was tested for its therapeutic effect in radiation dermatitis of breast and head-and-neck cancer patients. Methods: This study included 20 breast cancer patients and 10 head-and-neck cancer patients. Half of the irradiated area was covered with CSMed® and the other half was under routine treatment. The severity of radiation dermatitis was evaluated with radiation therapy oncology group (RTOG) grade throughout the treatment and the follow-up period. The RTOG grade between the dressed and undressed area were compared to illustrate the therapeutic effect of CSMed® dressing. Results: The results showed that CSMed® dressed area had significant lower RTOG score at 3–7 weeks and final record during the treatment, and 1–3 weeks during follow-up than undressed area. Conclusions: This indicated that CSMed® can delay the onset, reduce the severity, and enhance healing of radiation dermatitis. Abstract Polyamines are involved in various functions related to the cellular-level responses. To assess effects of polyamines on marine organisms, rearing experiments and comprehensive gene expression analyses were conducted on Acropora digitifera and Acropora sp.1, representative reef-building corals along the west-central coast of Okinawa, Japan, to evaluate effects of putrescine. Concentrations of putrescine ≥ 1 mM dissolved tissues of juvenile polyps and increased mortality of planula larvae. RNA-Seq analysis of juvenile polyps exposed to putrescine at the stage before effects became visible revealed dynamic fluctuations in gene expression in the putrescine-treated samples, with increased expression of stress-responsive genes (e.g. NAD-dependent protein deacylase sirtuin-6) and the polyamine transporter Slc18b1-like protein. These results also suggest that putrescine affects expression of genes related to ribosomes and translation. This study provides important insights into roles of polyamines and future directions regarding physiological responses of corals.

Abstract Coral reef ecosystems supported by environmentally sensitive reef-building corals face serious threats from human activities. Our understanding of these reef threats is hampered by the lack of sufficiently sensitive coral environmental impact assessment systems. In this study, we established a platform for metabolomic analysis at the single-coral-polyp level using state-of-the-art mass spectrometry (probe electrospray ionization/tandem mass spectrometry; PESI/MS/MS) capable of fine-scale analysis. We analyzed the impact of the organic UV filter, benzophenone (BP), which has a negative impact on corals. We also analyzed ammonium and nitrate samples, which affect the environmental sensitivity of coral-zooxanthella (Symbiodiniaceae) holobionts, to provide new insights into coral biology with a focus on metabolites. The method established in this study breaks new ground by combining PESI/MS/MS with a technique for coral polyps that can control the presence or absence of zooxanthellae in corals, enabling functions of zooxanthellae to be assessed on a polyp-by-polyp basis for the first time. This system will clarify biological mechanisms of corals and will become an important model system for environmental impact assessment using marine organisms.

Background The effects of aspirin‐free strategy on bleeding and cardiovascular events in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention with oral anticoagulation (OAC) have not been fully elucidated. Methods and Results We conducted the prespecified subgroup analysis based on the use of OAC, including vitamin K antagonist and direct oral anticoagulants, within 7 days before percutaneous coronary intervention in the STOPDAPT‐3 (Short and Optimal Duration of Dual Antiplatelet Therapy‐3) trial, which randomly compared prasugrel monotherapy (2984 patients) to dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) with prasugrel and aspirin (2982 patients) in patients with acute coronary syndrome or high bleeding risk. The coprimary end points were major bleeding events (Bleeding Academic Research Consortium types 3 or 5) and cardiovascular events (a composite of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, definite stent thrombosis, or ischemic stroke) at 1 month. Among 5966 study patients, there were 530 patients (8.9%) with OAC (no aspirin: N=248, and DAPT: N=282) and 5436 patients (91.1%) without OAC (no aspirin: N=2736, and DAPT: N=2700). Regardless of the use of OAC, the effects of no aspirin compared with DAPT were not significant for the bleeding end point (OAC: 4.45% and 4.27%, hazard ratio [HR], 1.04 [95% CI, 0.46–2.35]; no‐OAC: 4.47% and 4.75%, HR, 0.94 [95% CI, 0.73–1.20]; P for interaction=0.82), and for the cardiovascular end point (OAC: 4.84% and 3.20%, HR, 1.53 [95% CI, 0.64–3.62]; no‐OAC: 4.06% and 3.74%, HR, 1.09 [95% CI 0.83–1.42]; P for interaction =0.46). Conclusions The no‐aspirin strategy compared with the DAPT strategy failed to reduce major bleeding events irrespective of the use of OAC. There was a numerical excess risk of the no‐aspirin strategy relative to the DAPT strategy for cardiovascular events in patients with OAC.

Recent studies have revealed that stony corals create their extracellular skeletons via biologically controlled calcification, in which amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC), regarded as precursors of aragonite crystals, have been observed at nanoscale using electron microscopy. However, the exact mechanism by which ACC is generated, and how it contributes to skeletal growth in coral calcifying tissue, remains enigmatic. The septal skeleton of an individual polyp is composed of radially aligned plates extending upward from the aboral calcifying tissue. This structure includes microstructure known as the centers of calcification (CoC). However, despite its importance, direct in vivo observation of septal growth has not been reported. Observations under transmitted illumination using polarized light microscopy on calcifying tissue of young Acropora digitifera revealed small crystals, a few micrometers in size, that accompany subtle movements and that emerge exclusively on the inner wall of the pocket in extracellular calcifying fluid (ECF). Crystal growth initiated from small, scattered crystals on a glass plate resembles this phenomenon observed in coral skeletons. Time-lapse photographs of 12 individuals in early primary polyp settlement revealed this process in three individuals, documenting 13 of these crystal events. This phenomenon occurred solely at the bases of subsequently formed septa. These crystals differ notably from fusiform crystals and from dumbbell-like or rod-like crystals growing individually. Upright two-photon microscopy captured movement of sub-micron-sized fluorescent calcein-accumulating particles, emphasizing their presence on the surface of the growing fronts of septa. Methodological advances that facilitate comprehensive in vivo observation of sub-micron-sized structures, calcein-accumulating particles to the skeleton, are needed to develop a more detailed understanding of coral skeletal growth.

Background There is a scarcity of data on the prevalence and clinical impact of cerebrovascular disease detected on preprocedural computed tomography (CT) before aortic valve replacement (AVR) in patients with severe aortic stenosis. Methods and Results Among patients with severe aortic stenosis undergoing AVR, the authors compared clinical outcomes between patients with and without cerebrovascular disease detected on preprocedural CT, which was defined as chronic brain infarction or hemorrhage. The primary outcome measure in this study was a composite of all‐cause death or stroke. Among 567 study patients, 200 patients (35.3%) had cerebrovascular disease on preprocedural CT. Among 200 patients with cerebrovascular disease on preprocedural CT, only 28.5% of patients had a clinical history of symptomatic stroke. The cumulative 3‐year incidence of death or stroke was higher in patients with cerebrovascular disease on preprocedural CT than in those without cerebrovascular disease on preprocedural CT (40.7% versus 24.1%, log‐rank P
