The occurrence of extensive non-healing and chronic skin defects with loss of tissue substance in companion animals are a frequently solved problem. The management of the therapy of large-area defects and absent tissues is a challenge for setting up successful therapeutic management and achieving wound closure, satisfactory cosmetic effect, and restoration of the functionality of the damaged area. In veterinary medicine, we often encounter the failure of wound therapy methods commonly used in closing defects, as a result of which the defect closure time is prolonged. The longer the time required to close the defect, the greater the risk of microbial infection and complications associated with healing in the case of extensive damage to the surrounding soft tissues. Direct influence of the individual phases of healing with supportive alternative therapy appears to be a very suitable solution for the treatment of chronic wounds. To overcome the shortcomings related to partially efficient conventional wound dressings, efforts are oriented toward developing new and effective platforms for wound healing applications. Five patients referred to the Small Animal Clinic of the University Veterinary Hospital were included in this clinical study.

Bacterial diseases of the upper respiratory tract accompanied with various degrees of clinical signs are relatively frequent in a small animal clinical practice. The clinical signs are usually mild, mostly connected with clinical manifestation of nasal discharge, mild dyspnoea, sneezing, and coughing; however, in some cases they may convert to a chronic stage with serious systemic manifestations. The course and development of complications depends on the etiological agent and the success or failure of the subsequent therapy. An accurate diagnosis is of the upmost importance in order to develop an appropriate therapeutic plan for disease management. The present study focused on: endoscopic visualisation of the upper respiratory tract of the affected animals; localisation of pathological changes, and the targeted collection of the samples. This clinical study involved 26 patients with long-term signs of the affected airways that progressed to chronic stages after the failure of the prescribed therapy. Each patient was clinically examined, sedated and subjected to an endoscopic examination that involved the collection of samples. The samples were examined microbiologically, tested for antibiotic resistance, and a targeted therapy was implemented. The endoscopic and complex microbiological diagnosis enabled: more effective management of the bacterial infection; shortening of the therapy; and a convalescence period that reduced the risk of the development, or the spreading of resistant bacteria.

Skin wounds are a common presentation in small animal practice. The successful management of wound healing in dogs and cats requires knowledge of the physiology of the wound healing process and the application of an appropriate therapeutic intervention. Many wounds are colonised by bacteria or show signs of clinical infection. Infections can delay wound healing, impair cosmetic outcome and increase healthcare costs. Because of a lack of papers giving an overall prevalence of bacteria in different types of wounds, 45 samples were taken from patients treated at the Small Animals Clinic, Section of Surgery, Orthopaedics, Roentgenology and Reproduction of the University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice during the years 2017 — 2018 to determine the types of wounds and the prevalence of bacterial contamination of the wounds. Samples were obtained by using cotton-tipped swabs and then cultivated on Sabouraud’s plates in the Institute of Microbiology and Gnotobiology of the University. All 45 animals used in this research were first subjected to an anatomical and clinical exam to determine the patient’s health condition and the status of the wounds. Of these 45 samples, 9 were negative. Of the remaining 36 samples, 12 were cultivated and tested to give only the genera of the bacteria present, whilst 24 were tested more extensively for a specific diagnosis of the species. The most common wound was due to a bite from another animal; these made up 12 out of the 45 cases (26.67 %). There were 10 cases of dehiscence of old wounds (22.22 %), whereas there were only 2 cases of surgical wound complications (4.44 %). There were 5 puncture wounds or fistulas (11.11 %), 4 lacerations (8.88 %), 1 degloving injury (2.22 %), 1 seroma (2.22 %), 1 foreign body (2.22 %), 1 crushing injury (2.22 %), 1 case of contusion and necrosis (2.22 %), 1 cases of dermatitis with resulting pruritic lesions (2.22 %), and 1 cutting injury from a tight wire collar (2.22 %). Five cases (11.11 %) were wounds of unknown aetiology. The most commonly found bacteria was Staphylococcus intermedius, which was found in 14 out of the 45 wounds (31.11 %). From this study it appears that the first consideration for treatment of infected wounds should be a treatment plan which will have a high efficacy against Staphylococcus spp. However, despite the high prevalence of Staphylococcus spp., our results revealed that they are not present all of the time.

Skin wounds are a common presentation in small animal practice. These wounds may be acute or chronic with a complicated healing process. An important aspect of the healing of wounds is debridement which may be carried out by surgical, autolytic, mechanical or enzymatic methods. The debridement method is chosen according to the individual skin defect and influenced by factors such as wound size and location, the age of the wound, and the presence of infection or exudate. Enzymatic debridement is a method that is not commonly used in veterinary practice, and involves the use of enzyme preparations to remove necrotic tissue from a wound. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the enzymatic ointment collagenase as a method of debridement, and its effect on the macroscopic appearance of chronic skin wounds in cats and dogs. We observed that the application of Iruxol Mono directly to the wound changes the progress of the healing process, with no obvious adverse effects. The time of healing of chronic wounds was decreased and healthy granulation tissue was developed within a couple of days after application of the ointment. Enzymatic debridement appears to be a promising method of debridement for use in chronic wounds, and should be considered in cases where more conventional methods of debridement are ineffective or unsuitable.

The aim of the research was to determine the degree of influence of nitrate wastewater concentration on the process of removal of phosphorus compounds by sequential water treatment in anoxic and aerobic conditions in an activated sludge system. Model wastewater solutions were used for research with following parameter: biochemical oxygen demand for 20 days –200 mgО2/l; phosphate concentrations – 11.87‒12.38 mg/l; nitrate concentrations – 21.0; 36.0 and 48.0 mg/l. Аctivated sludge was added to them with content in solutions 2.2 mgО2/l to provide biological processes. For simulation of the biological process of dephosphotation in wastewater with usage of activated sludge in sequentially formed anoxic and aerobic conditions, a model sequential reactor ‒ SBR reactor ‒ was used. As the results show, with the increase in the concentration of nitrates at the inlet from 21.0 to 48.0 mg/l, the phosphate concentration in the treated solutions at the outlet from the bioreactor increases by 7.3%. Thus, from the work presented here, it can be concluded that for successful and effective implementation of the dephosphotation process the elimination of the nitrate present in wastewater is required. It is reasonable to separate processes of denitrification and dephosphotation in separate structures with the provision of minimal nitrate influence on the phosphorus removal from wastewater.

Skin aging has become an area of increasing research interest in dermatovenerology. Changes in the skin associated with aging can be detected by high - frequency 20 MHz ultrasonography, which is a useful diagnostic technique allowing reliable imaging of cutaneous and superficial subcutaneous structures.

In the past decades, iron has been one of the intensively studied biodegradable metals due to its suitable mechanical properties, but it suffers from slow degradation in a physiological environment and low bioactivity. In this work, the beneficial properties of ceramic and polymer coatings were merged to enhance the corrosion properties and biological compatibility of Fe-based biomaterials. A new bilayer coating for Fe-based biomaterials that speeds up degradation while offering controlled, localized drug release to prevent infections was prepared. In addition, bioactive coatings with an incorporated antibiotic (gentamicin, Ge) were produced to introduce antibacterial properties into the prepared biomaterials and thus increase their bioactivity. The calcium phosphate (CaP) coating layer as well as a bioactive coating layer of CaP doped with gentamicin was electrochemically deposited onto an iron substrate. A layer of poly(ethylene glycol) was subsequently applied to the selection of prepared specimens to create a bilayer ceramic/polymer coating. Electrochemical and immersion corrosion tests revealed that the application of a bilayer coating allowed achieving the desired acceleration of degradation, while the application of only a ceramic coating led to a reduction in the corrosion rate. A slight increase in the corrosion rate was observed for samples with bioactive drug-containing coatings compared to samples with drug-free coatings. Higher viability of human fibroblastic cells cultured in the extracts of the tested samples was noted for samples with a bilayer coating compared to a ceramic coating. The addition of gentamicin in the bioactive coatings had no significant effect on the viability value. Antibacterial tests proved the antibacterial activity of samples with a gentamicin-loaded coating layer against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus strains. A detailed study of the release of gentamicin from the prepared coatings revealed a different mechanism of drug release from the ceramic and the ceramic/polymer coating. Furthermore, it was found that the drug was released more slowly and uniformly from the bilayer coating. It is therefore possible to adjust the amount and duration of drug release from the bioactive coating by the thickness of the upper polymer layer. Incorporation of an antibiotic in a combined ceramic/polymer coating enabled the creation of a high-performance bioactive coating for Fe bone implants with the possibility to release a drug in the vicinity of the implant in a controlled manner to address the needs of the patient., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest., (© 2024 The Authors. Purpose: Crenosoma vulpis (Dujardin,1845) is a lungworm which has spread worldwide in canines and is associated with upper respiratory infections. In a majority of cases, the infections are accompanied with chronic cough. Diagnosis of lungworms is often underdiagnosed and can be misinterpreted as other respiratory diseases., Methods: The Small Animal Clinic of the University Veterinary Hospital admitted an 11-month-old dog presented with persistent cough associated with difficulty in breathing and even asphyxia. Based on clinical symptoms, the patient underwent radiological and bronchoscopic examination. Bronchoscopy revealed the presence of lungworms obturating the branches of the tracheobronchial tree. Larvae were collected by bronchoscopic lavage and subjected to parasitological and molecular examination., Results: Microscopic detection and morphological identification of the worms removed during the bronchoscopy confirmed the presence of female adult worms. The subsequent molecular characterisation of the mitochondrial (cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (cox1) and 12S ribosomal DNA (rDNA)), nuclear (18S rDNA) genes, as well as the analysis of the second internal transcribed spacer (ITS-2) region of the ribosomal DNA, confirmed the Crenosoma vulpis species. Faecal samples were processed using the Baermann method, which confirmed the presence of the larval stage 1 of C. vulpis. The therapy with fenbendazole at a dose of 50 mg/kg of live weight once daily for the period of 7 days was initiated for the patient., Conclusion: This paper presents the first molecularly confirmed clinical case of a Crenosoma vulpis infection in an 11-month-old female dog of the Miniature Schnauzer breed in Slovakia., (© 2024. The work is focused on the degradation, cytotoxicity, and antibacterial properties, of iron-based biomaterials with a bioactive coating layer. The foam and the compact iron samples were coated with a polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymer layer without and with gentamicin sulfate (PEG + Ge). The corrosion properties of coated and uncoated samples were studied using the degradation testing in Hanks' solution at 37 °C. The electrochemical and static immersion corrosion tests revealed that the PEG-coated samples corroded faster than samples with the bioactive PEG + Ge coating and uncoated samples. The foam samples corroded faster compared with the compact samples. To determine the cytotoxicity, cell viability was monitored in the presence of porous foam and compact iron samples. The antibacterial activity of the samples with PEG and PEG + Ge against Escherichia coli CCM 3954 and Staphylococcus aureus CCM 4223 strains was also tested. Tested PEG + Ge samples showed significant antibacterial activity against both bacterial strains. Chronic wounds and the failure of conventional treatment are relatively common in veterinary medicine. Recently, there has been a growing interest in alternative therapeutic approaches and the utilization of biodegradable materials. Their potential application in wound therapy may offer a novel and more suitable option compared to conventional treatment methods. Biodegradable materials can be classified into two main categories: natural, synthetic, and a combination of both, which have the potential to have synergistically enhanced properties. In this study, four domestic dogs with clinical symptoms of chronic wounds were enrolled. These wounds underwent treatment utilizing a novel biodegradable composite material composed of gelatin sponge combined with two electrospun layers of polycaprolactone (PCL) along with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) fibers containing povidone-iodine complex (PVP-I). The initial phase of the study was dedicated to evaluating the antibacterial properties of iodine against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli . On average, wound healing in domestic dogs took 22 days from the initial treatment, and iodine concentrations demonstrated a significant antibacterial effect against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . Based on the favorable outcomes observed in wound management, we believe that the utilization of a blend of natural and synthetic biodegradable materials holds promise as an effective wound therapy option.

The aim of this study was to provide a beneficial treatment effect of mesenchymal stem cell products derived from the canine amniotic membrane (AM-MSC) on the complicated wound healing process in dogs. AM-MSCs were characterized in terms of morphology, phenotypic profile, and multilineage differentiation potential. The in vitro study of the effect of canine amniotic mesenchymal stem cell conditioned media (AMMSC-CM) on a primary skin fibroblast cell culture scratch assay showed a decrease in the measured scratch area of about 66.39% against the negative control (Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium-32.55%) and the positive control (Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium supplemented with FGF2, N2, B27, and EGF-82.077%) after 72 h treatment. In the experimental study, seven dogs with complicated nonhealing wounds were treated with a combination of antibiotics, NSAIDs, and local AMMSC-CM application. After 15 days of therapy, we observed a 98.47% reduction in the wound surface area as opposed to 57.135% in the control group treated by conventional therapy based on debridement of necrotic tissue, antibiotic therapy, pain management, and change of wound dressing.

This case study describes the use of additive manufacturing technology combining a biodegradable polymer material, polycaprolactone (PCL), and innovative procedures for creating superficial wound dressing, a scaffold in the therapy of extensive contaminated skin defects caused by a traumatic injury. Chronic and contaminated wounds represent a clinical problem and require intensive wound care. The application of a temporary scaffold-facilitated bridging of the wound edges resulted in faster tissue regeneration and a shorter defect closure time, compared to other conservative and surgical methods used in therapy of chronic wounds. Although this procedure has proven to be an optimal alternative to autologous transplants, further studies with a larger number of patients would be beneficial.

Babesia gibsoni is a tick-borne protozoal blood parasite that may cause hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, lethargy, and/or splenomegaly in dogs. Many drugs have been used in management of canine babesiosis such as monotherapy or combined treatment, including diminazene aceturate, imidocarb dipropionate, atovaquone, and antibiotics. This report examines the effectiveness and safety of Malarone ® , azithromycin (AZM) and artesunate (ART) combination for the treatment of babesiosis in dogs naturally infected with Babesia gibsoni . Twelve American Pit Bull Terriers were included in the experiment. Examined dogs underwent clinical and laboratory analysis including hematology and biochemistry profile and serum protein electrophoresis. After diagnosis, the dogs received combined therapy with Malarone ® (13.5 mg/kg PO q24 h), azithromycin (10 mg/kg PO q24 h) and artesunate (12.5 mg/kg PO q24 h) for 10 days. The combined treatment improved hematology and biochemical parameters to the reference range gradually during the first 14 days already, resulting in the stable values until day 56 after treatment. No clinically apparent adverse effects were reported during treatment and monitoring. No relapses of parasitemia were detected in control days 180, 360, 540 and 720 in all dogs. Results of the study indicate that the combined treatment leads to successful elimination of parasitemia in chronically infected dogs with B. gibsoni .

Birds often suffer from skin injuries of different aetiology. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is successfully used for improvement of wound healing in humans and in some mammalian species (e.g. horses, dogs and cats), but experience with its application in avian patients has not yet been published. Therefore, the aim of this study was to test a quick method for the counting of isolated avian platelets and mononuclear leukocytes and to find an appropriate carrier for their application to the wounds of birds. It seems that flow cytometry can be used for the quick counting of isolated cells and the discrimination of thrombocytes, lymphocytes and eventually monocytes or debris. Of the tested gels and sponges routinely used for improvement of wound healing, a gelatin sponge (Gelaspon®) providing the highest numbers and viability of isolated cells proved to be the best carrier.
