- Abstract
Chatter vibration is a longstanding problem for machining industry. It lowers both surface finish quality and life of cutting tool. In this study, real time chatter vibration detection system is designed and tested experimentally. A traditional lathe, equipped with two accelerometers placed on cutting tool in two orthogonal coordinates and a microphone, is used for machining a steel rod in face turning operation. During cutting process analog data of accelerometers and microphone is acquired by data acquisition card that is connected to a computer. A Matlab graphical user interface that has the capability of acquiring and processing accelerometer and microphone data simultaneously is generated. Processing data is done by means of calculating coherences between accelerometer vs. accelerometer data and accelerometer vs. microphone data and comparison of coherences to threshold values that are tuned experimentally. Coherence function determines if two data signal come from the same source or not. Coherence functions value of data pair reaches unity at the chatter frequency. Three chatter conditions are described as stable, slight and severe chatter conditions. If both coherences exceed threshold values, severe chatter occurs. If one of the coherences exceeds and other doesn't than slight chatter occurs. If both of the coherences don't exceed threshold values then the system is stable. Depending on the chatter condition Matlab graphical user interface alerts the operator by indicator that changes color for different conditions. Graphical user interface also shows Fast Fourier Transform of the microphone data. Real time detection allows operator to change lathe speed or cutting depth in case of chatter occurs during the cutting process. By preventing chatter vibration, surface quality of the work-piece and life time of the machine tool is increased., The Turkish Aerospace Industries, Inc. It is a well-known fact that Turkey is on a seismically active region. In order to kick-off structural dynamics research in TOBB Economy and Technology University which would focus on improving earthquake response of structures, an experimental earthquake simulation setup and a three floor building model is created as a senior year graduation project. There were two main parts of the study; the first part is the design and integration of components of an earthquake simulation system. The second part is the analysis and design of a three floor building model (scale ?1/10) with its first natural frequency close to an actual residential three floor reinforced concrete building. After manufacturing of the building model the natural frequencies of the test model is measured and compared with the finite element model predictions. The earthquake testing of the model attached to the hydraulic piston is also performed. The hydraulic piston movement is measured with an LVDT and the building floor sways are measured using an accelerometer. Also, a simple cantilever type of tuned dynamic vibration absorber is placed on the third floor and the effectiveness of the tuned dynamic vibration absorber on decreasing building floor accelerations will be measured., The Turkish Aerospace Industries, Inc. BackgroundBullying behavior is recognized internationally as a serious issue associated with mental health and functioning problems among children.ObjectiveThe present study sought to determine the associations between bullying involvement and self-reported mental health among elementary school children across seven European countries.Participants and settingThe School Children Mental Health in Europe study was conducted in Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Romania and Turkey in 2010 using similar methodology to collect cross-sectional data from children, parents, and teachers.MethodsThe study focused on children who had completed the Dominic Interactive and whose mother and/or teacher had completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (n = 5,183).ResultsOverall 14.3 % of children were identified as bullies, 18.2 % as victims and, 19.0 % as both bullies and victims. Despite the low threshold for defining bullying status, children identified as being involved were highly likely to present with self-reported mental health problems: 31.6 % of bully-victims reported any disorder, while 25.4 % of bullies and 23.1 % of victims did. Adjusting for key factors, bullies and bully-victims were significantly more likely to present with any externalizing disorder, while victims were not. Additionally, bully-victim status was associated with significantly greater odds of presenting with each internalizing disorder: phobia (AOR = 1.48, 95 %CI = 1.01–2.19), GAD (AOR = 2.54, 95 %CI = 1.67–3.87), separation anxiety (AOR = 1.88, 95 %CI = 1.43–2.47) and depression (AOR = 2.52, 95 %CI = 1.61–3.93). However, victim status was only associated with GAD (AOR = 1.63, 95 %CI = 1.07–2.48) and bully status with separation anxiety (AOR = 1.44, 95 %CI = 1.07–1.93).ConclusionsThe results highlight the association of bullying involvement and child mental health in elementary school children across Europe.

Aim: To assess observer performance in detecting endodontic complications using three different cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) units with and without the application of artefact reduction modes. Methodology: The study involved 40 freshly extracted human mandibular teeth (n = 10 per group) and divided randomly into four endodontic complication groups. Group 1) Instrument fracture; Group 2) Strip perforation; Group 3) Canal underfilling; and Group 4) Canal overfilling. Images of each tooth were obtained using three different CBCT units offering artefact reduction algorithms: the ProMax 3D Max, the Pax Flex 3D and the Dentri S. Four observers evaluated the images for the presence/absence of the four simulated endodontic complications. Weighted kappa coefficients and intra‐class correlation coefficients (ICCs) were calculated to reveal the intra‐ and inter‐observer agreement for each imaging mode, respectively. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to evaluate the observers' performance. DeLong tests were used to compare the results for each image mode and observer using a significance level of α = 0.05. Results: In each of the four simulated endodontic complication groups, no significant differences were observed with and without application of artefact reduction for any of the three CBCT units tested. Only two significant differences were detected, and both were between the ProMax 3D Max at low mode AR and ProMax 3D Max without AR: observer 2 in group 1 (P = 0.0001) and observer 4 in group 4 (P = 0.0256). Conclusion: For each of the three CBCT units tested, application of artefact reduction for detecting endodontic complications is not recommended as a routine tool. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Despite the importance of phages in driving horizontal gene transfer (HGT) among pathogenic bacteria, the underlying molecular mechanisms mediating phage adsorption to S. aureus are still unclear. Phage φ11 is a siphovirus with a high transducing efficiency. Here, we show that the tail protein Gp45 localized within the φ11 baseplate. Phage φ11 was efficiently neutralized by anti-Gp45 serum, and its adsorption to host cells was inhibited by recombinant Gp45 in a dose-dependent manner. Flow cytometry analysis demonstrated that biotin-labelled Gp45 efficiently stained the wild-type S. aureus cell but not the double knockout mutant ΔtarM/S, which lacks both α- and β-O-GlcNAc residues on its wall teichoic acids (WTAs). Additionally, adsorption assays indicate that GlcNAc residues on WTAs and O-acetyl groups at the 6-position of muramic acid residues in peptidoglycan are essential components of the φ11 receptor. The elucidation of Gp45-involved molecular interactions not only broadens our understanding of siphovirus-mediated HGT, but also lays the groundwork for the development of sensitive affinity-based diagnostics and therapeutics for S. aureus infection.

- Abstract
Item does not contain fulltext, Background: Worldwide, approximately one in eight children or adolescents suffer from a mental disorder. The present study was designed to determine the cross-national prevalence of mental health problems in children aged 6-11 across seven European countries including Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Romania, and Turkey. Methods: Data were collected on 7682 children for whom either parent- or teacher SDQ were completed. Results: The present study provides country-specific normative banding for both parent- and teacher SDQ scores. Overall, 12.8 % of children have any probable disorder, with rates ranging from 15.5 % in Lithuania to 7.8 % in Italy, 3.8 % of children have a probable emotional disorder, 8.4 % probable conduct disorder, and 2.0 % probable hyperactivity/inattention. However, when adjusting for key sociodemographic variables and parental psychological distress, country of residence did not predict the odds of having any disorder. For specific disorders, however, country of residence does have an effect on the odds of presenting with mental health problems. Conclusions: As normative data are key in the comparison of mental health status on an international level, the present data considerably advance the possibilities of future research. Furthermore, the findings underline the importance of controlling for a number of sociodemographic and parental variables when conducting international comparisons of child mental health. In addition, the findings suggest that efforts are needed locally to assist in the detection and prevention of parental psychological distress.

The relative merits of a vascularized autogenous cartilage flap (VACF) are discussed in reconstruction of tracheal defects in rabbits. Sixteen albino Vienna rabbits were divided into two groups of eight animals each. In all rabbits, a rectangular tracheal defect was created. In the experimental group, a VACF was designed on the left auricle. This island flap was then transposed through a subcutaneous tunnel to the trachea and used to repair the defect. In the control group, tracheal defects were reconstructed with free cartilage grafts. In histologic evaluations, it was found that the reconstructed site showed a greater degree of vascularization when a VACF was used, and the gap between the trachea and flap was filled with new cartilage tissue, to a much greater extent than with the free cartilage grafts. It is concluded that use of the VACF is a relatively safe and effective procedure for repairing tracheal defects.

Over the last 15 years, there have been tremendous progress in the technology of optical interference filters. Nowadays, it is more and more common to fabricate optical interference filters that can combine several tens to several hundreds of layers in order to produce more and more complex optical functions. These progresses are the result of improved multilayer structures modeling and design procedures, the introduction of Virtual Deposition Process, and the development of performant physical vapor deposition machines associated with in-situ optical monitoring. In this paper, we will present actual state-of-the-art of these technologies and some typical examples of filters. We will then present some of the actual challenges and outlook in order to produce more and more performant optical components.

- Abstract
This study assessed the stress distribution under occlusal forces in mandibular molars after utilizing several nickel-titanium rotary systems and identified potential root fracture patterns through finite element analysis (FEA). Five three-dimensionally printed mandibular molars were used, with one tooth left unshaped and the remaining four shaped using ProTaper Gold (Dentsply, Tulsa Dental Specialties, Tulsa, OK), Reciproc Blue (VDW, Munich, Germany), XP-endo Shaper (FKG Dentaire, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland), and Hyflex EDM (Coltene/Whaledent, Altst€atten, Switzerland) rotary systems. Subsequently, micro-CT scans were performed on the teeth, and representative FEA models were generated. Two distinct loadings, vertical and oblique, were applied, and stress parameters including von Mises stress, maximum principal stress, and minimum principal stress were recorded and compared across groups. Although stress values in both loading conditions correlated with volume increases post-shaping, the stress distribution patterns indicative of potential fractures were comparable across groups. Stresses under oblique loads were observed to be higher than those under vertical loads. Several rotary systems, based on the volumetric changes they induce in dental hard tissues, may elevate stress values throughout the tooth, leading to root fractures in regions where stress concentration occurs. Conservative root canal shaping leads to a lower overall stress concentration. In mandibular molars, oblique forces have a more destructive effect compared to vertical forces., (© 2024. - Abstract
Objective: This research aimed to evaluate retrospectively the effect of anastrozole on height gain and sex hormone levels in pubertal boys receiving growth hormone (GH)., Materials and Methods: Pubertal boys who received both GH and anastrozole (GH+A) were one-to-one matched with boys who received only GH (GH-Only) for chronological and bone age, pubertal stage and height before the GH initiation, treatment duration and midparental height. Anthropometric measurements throughout treatment and adult heights were compared between the groups. Sex hormone levels were evaluated longitudinally in the GH+A group., Results: Forty-eight cases (24 in each group) were included. There was no statistical difference in adult height between the GH+A and GH-Only (p = 0.071). However, when the analysis was limited to those receiving anastrozole for at least 2 years, mean adult height was higher in the GH+A than in the GH-Only group (173.1 ± 6.2/169.8 ± 5.6 cm, p = 0.044). Despite similar growth rates between the two groups, bone age advancement was slower in the GH+A than in the GH-Only in a mean anastrozole treatment period of 1.59 years (1.37 ± 0.80/1.81 ± 0.98 years, p = 0.001). The greatest increase for FSH, LH, total and free testosterone and decrease for estradiol levels were observed in the third month after anastrozole was started, albeit remaining within the normal ranges according to the actual pubertal stages., Conclusion: Using anastrozole with GH for at least 2 years decelerates the bone age advancement resulting in adult height gain with no abnormality in sex hormone levels. These results suggest anastrozole can be used as an additional treatment to GH for further height gain in pubertal boys.

- Abstract
Pulp canal obliteration (PCO) is a significant complication in endodontics that can occur due to various factors. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a useful diagnostic tool for identifying root canal anatomy and variations, and guided endodontics is emerging as an alternative treatment solution for teeth with partially or entirely obliterated pulpal canals. However, the accuracy of CBCT-guided 3D-printed guides on different materials and layer thicknesses is not well understood. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of guides prepared using CBCT images on 3D-printed teeth with stereolithography (SLA) using three different materials and two different layer thicknesses. This study found that 3D-printed guides were accurate and reliable for accessing 3D-manufactured obliterated teeth and reaching the apical area. No significant differences in distance or angle measurements were found when different guide materials were used, suggesting that materials can be selected based on availability and cost. These findings contribute to the knowledge base regarding the effectiveness of 3D printing technology in guided endodontics and can help to identify the most suitable materials and techniques for this application.

- Abstract
Lysine acetylation is a charge-neutralizing post-translational modification of proteins bound by bromodomains (Brds). A 1,2,4-triazole amino acid (ApmTri) was established as acetyllysine (Kac) mimic recruiting Brds of the BET family in contrast to glutamine commonly used for simulating this modification. Optimization of triazole substituents and side chain spacing allowed BET Brd recruitment to ApmTri-containing peptides with affinities similar to native substrates. Crystal structures of ApmTri-containing peptides in complex with two BET Brds revealed the binding mode which mirrored that of Kac ligands. ApmTri was genetically encoded and recombinant ApmTri-containing proteins co-enriched BRD3(2) from cellular lysates. This interaction was blocked by BET inhibitor JQ1. With genetically encoded ApmTri, biochemistry is now provided with a stable Kac mimic reflecting charge neutralization and Brd recruitment, allowing new investigations into BET proteins in vitro and in vivo., (© 2022 The Authors. - Abstract
Fears are common in the general population and particularly among children. The number of fear subtypes (animals, natural environment, situational, blood-injection-injury or other type) has been shown to be associated with psychopathology. Furthermore, there is evidence suggesting that some subtypes may be more often associated with mental disorders than others. The present study uses data from a large cross sectional survey, the School Children Mental Health in Europe (SCMHE) study, conducted in eight European countries on children ages 6 through 13-years-old attending elementary school (n = 9613). Fear subtypes and self-reported mental health were assessed using the Dominic Interactive (DI), a self-administered computerized image-based questionnaire. The findings show that the number of fear subtypes is strongly associated with self-reported internalizing and externalizing problems. In addition, adjusting for the number of subtypes, fear of animals was less likely than other fears to be associated with psychopathology. The findings support the notion that children who report excessive and generalized fear should be targeted for prevention, consistent with research identifying childhood onset generalized specific phobia as a probable precursor to subsequent psychopathology., (© 2021. - Abstract
Objectives: The purposes of this study were to determine the incidence of acute pancreatitis after living donor hepatectomy and to investigate potential risk factors and outcomes., Materials and Methods: Clinical data of all donors who underwent donor hepatectomy between January 2015 and December 2016 in our liver transplant institute were reviewed. Donor data were obtained from a prospectively maintained database. The donors were divided into 2 groups according to whether they developed postoperative pancreatitis. The following data were compared between the 2 groups: demo-graphic information (age, sex), body mass index, type of hepatectomy (right, left, or left lateral), intraoperative cholangiographic findings, operative time, blood loss, graft data (graft weight, remnant liver ratio), duration of postoperative hospital stay, and postoperative morbidity and mortality (if any). Pancreatitis severity and treatment outcomes were also examined in patients with postoperative pancreatitis., Results: Our study included 348 donors who underwent donor hepatectomy for living-donor liver transplant. Postoperative pancreatitis developed in 6 donors (1.7%). We found no statistical differences between patients with and without postoperative pancreatitis in terms of demographic and intra-operative findings. Neither loco-regional nor systemic complications of pancreatitis developed in any of the patients. Therefore, all were classified as having mild pancreatitis according to revised Atlanta classification. The mean APACHE II score was 5.2 ± 1.2 points (range, 4-7 points). All patients with postoperative pancreatitis received conservative-supportive treatment., Conclusions: Although postoperative pancreatitis is a rarely reported complication in living liver donors, it should always be considered, especially in patients who unpredictably deteriorate in the postoperative period. Proper recognition and timely treatment can help avoid s erious consequences.

- Abstract
Background: Bullying involvement is associated with suicidal ideation among adolescents, yet there are no studies examining this issue among younger children., Methods: The School Children Mental Health in Europe study was conducted in seven countries in 2010 using similar methods to collect cross-sectional data from children, parents, and teachers. Suicidal ideation and thoughts of death were assessed using the Dominic Interactive among children. Parent and teacher reports were used to determine bullying involvement. The sample comprised n = 5,183 children ages 6 to 11 identified as bullies (n = 740, 14.3%), victims (n = 945, 18.2%), bully-victims (n = 984, 18.2%) and not involved in bullying (n = 2,514, 48.5%). Multivariate logistic regressions were used to assess the association of bullying involvement with suicidal ideation and thoughts of death., Results: Suicidal ideation was reported by 13.3% of those not involved in bullying, 17.1% of victims, 19.6% of bullies and 24.4% of bully-victims. Similarly, thoughts of death were reported by 19.0% of victims, 24.3% of bullies, and 25.0% of bully-victims. Children identified as being involved were more likely than those not involved to report suicidal ideation in bivariate analyses. When controlling for psychopathology and for maternal distress among other factors, the association remained significant for bullies (AOR=1.30, 95%CI=1.01-1.66), bully-victims (AOR=1.54, 95%CI=1.22-1.94), but not for victims (AOR=1.02, 95%CI=0.80-1.30)., Limitations: The study is cross-sectional. The assessment of bullying may have underestimated victimization., Conclusions: The association of bullying involvement and child suicidal ideation is present among elementary school children across Europe, using multiple informants to avoid shared variance biases, and adjusting for key factors., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier B.V. - Abstract
Due to urbanization worldwide, gradual increase in construction and use of irregular urban topography affect urban climate negatively, triggering urban heat island (UHI) formations in cities and thereby causing them to become uninhabitable places for human comfort. This study, which covers the province of Diyarbakır in Turkey, aims to determine the spatial and temporal distribution of areas with potential urban heat island (UHI) by using remote sensing methods and satellite/terrain data available between 2001 and 2019. According to the Landsat 7 satellite, an area with a potential of 27.4 km
2 in 2001, 20.8 km2 in 2006, 27.4 km2 in 2008, 16.7 km2 in 2010, and 12.2 km2 in 2012 was determined. According to the Landsat 8 satellite, it was measured as 14.49 km2 in 2017 and 15.67 km2 in 2018. According to Landsat 8 satellite data, areas with UHI potential increased by 14.6% over a 3-year period. According to Landsat 7 data, there has been a continuous fluctuation over the years. One of the important results of this study is that between 2001 and 2019, the higher the rate of change according to the surface temperature, the larger the area with the potential of the heat island. At the same time, it has been determined that spatially potential UHIs have a great potential not in the city center, but in the surrounding areas close to the center and in the topographically hollow areas., (© 2021. - Abstract
3D printing is a process whereby a given material is deposited in successive layers to create a 3D object. In dentistry, this technology involves three steps: digital data acquisition using a scanner and/or CBCT, data processing and design within a software application, and manufacturing through 3D printing. The aim of the present article is to discuss the clinical application of 3D printing in endodontics through the presentation of three specific and original endodontic clinical cases. Innovative approaches were utilized in these cases for the treatment of a calcified root canal, periapical surgery, and autotransplantation. The results of all three cases were promising regarding proper case selection and in the design process. 3D-printing technology may be helpful to reduce surgical time, operator bias, and the risk of procedural errors.

Objective: To compare observer agreement between endodontists and oral and maxillofacial radiologists (OMRs) in the detection and measurement of periapical lesions as depicted in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) with 2 voxel sizes., Study Design: In total, 256 CBCT images of maxillary molars were evaluated by 2 endodontists and 2 OMRs. Images were obtained at voxel sizes of 0.2 and 0.4 mm. Observers evaluated 64 endodontically and 64 nonendodontically treated teeth for the presence of periapical lesions using a 5-point confidence scale. Weighted κ values were calculated to determine intra- and interobserver agreement. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were calculated to assess intra- and interobserver agreement in width and height measurements of the lesions., Results: Intraobserver agreement ranged from fair to almost perfect, with κ values higher for the OMRs than for the endodontists. Interobserver agreement between endodontists ranged from fair to moderate at the 0.2mm voxel size and was slight at 0.4 mm. Agreement between OMRs was almost perfect at 0.2 mm and ranged from substantial to almost perfect at 0.4 mm. ICC was excellent for all observers in all conditions., Conclusions: Intra- and interobserver reliability was affected by voxel size and specialty. Correlation for measurements exhibited no variation., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.)

- Abstract
Background: To investigate the factors predicting acute appendicitis (AAp) and perforated AAp in patients who underwent surgery with a preliminary diagnosis of AAp., Methods: Between May 2009 and December 2018, 1316 patients underwent appendectomy with a presumed diagnosis of AAp. To investigate the factors predicting AAp, patients were divided into two groups considering the histopathological presence of inflammatory changes in the appendix: AAp positive (AAp group; n=1043) and AAp negative (Non-AAp group; n=273). Also, to investigate the factors predicting appendiceal perforation, patients with AAp were divided into two groups considering the presence of perforation: non-perforated AAp (n=850) and perforated AAp (n=193). ROC curve analysis was used to identify optimum cut-off values of quantitative variables. The groups were compared using univariate analysis methods and parameters with a p≤ 0.20 were taken into a multivariate logistic regression model., Results: Multivariate analysis method related to factors predicting AAp showed that gender (male; p=0.034; OR=1.4), WBC (≥10.900; p=0.022; OR=1.5), MPV (≥29.1; p=0.006; OR=1.6), TBil (≥0.61; p=0.034; OR=1.4), CRP (≥0.725; p=0.002; OR=1.7), NLR (≥5.13; p=0.034; OR=1.5), PNR (<24.04; p=0.001; OR=1.9) and US findings (AAp+; p<0.001; OR=2.9) were independent factors for predicting AAp. Multivariate analysis method related to factors predicting appendiceal perforation showed that age (≥32 years; p<0.001; OR=2.5), TBil (≥0.67; p=0.046; OR=1.5), CRP (≥3.75; p<0.001; OR=3.0) and NLR (≥5.69; p=0.006; OR=1.8) were independent factors for predicting perforated AAp., Conclusion: We believe that predicting both AAp and perforation will help the clinician evaluate patients who applied to the emergency unit with presumed diagnosis AAp. This approach will also contribute to reducing the negative appendectomy and perforation rates.

- Abstract
Background. The present study aimed to evaluate the sealing ability of three different calcium silicate-based materials in furcation perforations. Methods. Seventy-six human mandibular molar teeth were selected. Perforations were created in the center of the pulp chamber floor. The experimental teeth were randomly divided into three groups (n=22). Perforations were repaired with MTA Angelus, Endocem MTA, or EndoSequence BioCeramic Root Repair Material Fast Set Putty (BC-RRM Putty). Microleakage of the different repair materials to be tested was measured by computerized fluid filtration method at 24- and 72-hour intervals. Results. For each time interval, no statistically significant difference was observed between the groups. For Endocem MTA and BC-RRM Putty groups, the difference between the leakage values measured at both periods was not statistically significant ( P > 0.05). However, there was a significant difference for the MTA Angelus group ( P < 0.05). Conclusion. All the calcium silicate-based materials used in the present study showed similar performance in repairing furcation perforations at 24- and 72-hour intervals., (© 2021 The Author(s).)

Purpose: The present study seeks to examine gender differences in internalizing and externalizing problems either parent/teacher or self-reported and to investigate the influence of country-level gender gap on children's mental health problems across countries with high and low gender gap across Europe., Methods: The School Children's Mental Health in Europe (SCMHE) survey collected data on primary school children living in six European countries, using self-reports (SR) from children (Dominic Interactive), as well as combination of parent- and teacherreports (P/T C) (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire) to assess internalizing and externalizing mental health problems. The World Economic Forum's (WEF's) Global Gender Gap report's Gender Gap Index (GGI) was used to categorize countries with high and low gender gap., Results: Boys had greater odds of externalizing problems (OR = 2.6 P/T C, 1.95 SR), and lower odds of internalizing problems (OR = 0.85 P/T C, 0.63 SR). The gender gap's association with mental health problems was different depending on the informant used to identify these problems. A small gap was a risk factor based on reports from adults for externalizing (OR = 1.53) and internalizing problems (OR = 1.42) while it was a protective factor for SR internalizing problems (OR = 0.72). For these problems the gender gap impacted boys and girls differently: a small gender gap was protective for boys but not for girls, including when controlling for key confounding variables., Conclusions: The differential impact of country-level gender gap observed between self-reported and parent- or teacher-reported mental health is complex but nevertheless present trough mechanisms that are worthwhile to study in depth, with a special attention to the informants and the type of problems examined.

Background: This study aims to present the usability of real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA) in the differential diagnosis of granulomatous appendicitis (GAp), especially in areas where tuberculosis (TB) is endemic., Methods: Sixteen patients underwent appendectomy with presumed diagnosis of acute appendicitis were retrospectively analyzed for histopathological diagnosis of GAp. Real-time PCR method was used to show the whether presence of DNA of the tubercle bacilli in paraffin-embedded tissue blocks. IGRA test was used to investigate whether tubercle bacilli- specific interferon gamma was present in peripheral blood., Results: Sixteen patients (male: 10 female: 6) aged between 21 and 82 years were included in this study. All patients had acute appendicitis and three of them also had appendiceal perforation. Histopathologically, necrotizing granulomatous inflammation was detected in all appendectomy specimens. Acid-fast bacilli were not detected in any of the pathology slides stained with Ehrlich-Ziehl-Neelsen. Real-time PCR was studied in paraffin-embedded tissue blocks of all patients with GAp, but the TB bacilli DNA was amplified in only three patients. IGRA test was studied in peripheral blood samples of 12 patients with GAp and results were as follows: negative (n=9), positive (n=2) and indeterminate (n=1)., Conclusion: We believe that the use of anamnesis, histopathological findings, tissue PCR, blood IGRA and clinical findings together are important for differential diagnosis of GAp, especially where TB is endemic. We also suggest that all appendectomy specimens should be sent to the laboratory for histopathological evaluation even if specimens appear macroscopically normal.

- Abstract
This study assessed the additional contribution of balneotherapy on physical therapy in subacute supraspinatus tendinopathy. Ninety patients with subacute supraspinatus tendinopathy were included. They were randomized into two equal groups. In group 1 (n = 45), transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), hot pack, ultrasound treatments, and Codman's and range of motion (ROM) exercises were performed. In group 2 (n = 45), balneotherapy was added to the treatment program. In both groups, shoulder active ROM and handgrip strength were measured. Pain was evaluated using a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) (rest, sleep, movement); functional assessment and quality of life were measured respectively with the Shortened Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Questionnaire (QuickDASH), and the Short Form-36 health survey (SF 36) form. All measurements were repeated before and after 15 treatment sessions. There were statistically significant differences between the before and after assessment parameters in group 1 (all p < 0.05), but not for SF-36 General Health Perceptions, SF-36 Mental Health sub-parameters, and handgrip strengths. However, there were statistically significant differences between all the evaluation before and after the treatment in group 2 (all p < 0.05). When the two groups were compared in terms of alpha gains, statistically significant differences were observed in favor of group 2 in all measurements (all p < 0.05) except for SF-36 Emotional Role Difficulty and SF-36 Mental Health sub-parameters. This study shows that the addition of balneotherapy to physical therapy for subacute supraspinatus tendinopathy can make additional contributions to shoulder ROM, pain, handgrip strength, functional status, and quality of life.

- Abstract
Background/aim: Premature birth is a major problem that results in an increased risk of mortality and morbidity. The management of such infants consists of supraphysiological oxygen therapy, which affects brain development due, in part, to the deterioration caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS). We showed previously that exogenously administered uridine provides neuroprotection in a neonatal rat model of hyperoxic brain injury. Hence, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of uridine on ROS in the same setting., Materials and Methods: Hyperoxic brain injury was induced by subjecting a total of 53 six-day-old rat pups to 80% oxygen (the hyperoxia group) for a period of 48 h. The pups in the normoxia group continued breathing room air (21% oxygen). Normoxia + saline or hyperoxia + saline or hyperoxia + uridine 100 mg/kg or hyperoxia + uridine 300 mg/kg or hyperoxia + uridine 500 mg/kg was injected intraperitoneally (i. p.) 15 min prior to the hyperoxia procedure. The pups were decapitated and the brains were homogenized to analyze superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), myeloperoxidase (MPO), and malondialdehyde (MDA) enzymes as well as DJ-1 (protein deglycase DJ-1) — an oxidative stress-sensitive protein., Results: Hyperoxia-induced may cause overproduction of oxygen radicals and the oxidant/antioxidant balance may be disturbed in the brain. Brain MPO and MDA levels were significantly increased in saline-receiving pups exposed to hyperoxia. Brain SOD and GSH-Px levels were significantly decreased in saline-receiving pups exposed to hyperoxia. Our results showed that uridine administration prevented the hyperoxia-induced decrease in SOD and GSH-Px while counteracting the hyperoxia-induced increase in MPO and MDA in a dose-dependent manner. Uridine also increased the DJ-1 levels in brains of rat pups subjected to hyperoxia., Conclusion: These data suggest that uridine exhibits antioxidative properties which may mediate the protective effects of uridine in a neonatal rat model of hyperoxic brain injury., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interest with regard to the present study., (This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.)

- Abstract
In recent years, it has been difficult to establish a supply-demand balance between urban growth, increasing population, and existing water resources in many countries. In this study, the Bodrum Peninsula, which is an important tourism center for Turkey, was examined in terms of the relationship between the urban growth of the peninsula, population projections, the need for drinking and potable water, and the availability of the existing water resources. Using the Geographic Information System, it has been determined that the urban growth of the peninsula increased by 11.36% between 1985 and 2010. Urban growth is mostly concentrated in the coastal areas where 2 houses are densely built. The population is expected to increase approximately six times between 2010 and 2060. The amount of drinking and potable water required according to the population projection is 12.38, 26.50, 69.12, and 109.50 hm
3 /year for 2010, 2030, 2050, and 2060 respectively. The existing water resources of the peninsula will be able to meet the requirements until 2030. In order to meet the water needs of the peninsula until 2055, the Bozalan and Gökçeler dams located nearby as well as the Namnam dam located at mid-range to the peninsular should be built. It is not possible to meet the water needs of the peninsula in 2060 with just the near and medium distance water resources. However, by supplying water from the Akköprü dam located at a further distance, it is possible that 2060 water needs can be met.- Published

Background: This study aims to compare liver transplant and non-liver transplant patients who underwent appendectomy with a presumed diagnosis of acute appendicitis., Methods: Demographic and clinicopathological features of 13 liver transplant recipients (transplant group) who underwent posttransplant appendectomy with a presumed diagnosis of acute appendicitis were compared with the features of 52 non-liver transplant patients (non-transplant group). They underwent appendectomy with a presumed diagnosis of acute appendicitis during the same time period. The transplant group was matched at random in a 1: 4 ratio with the non- transplant group. While the continuous variables were compared using the Mann Whitney-U test, categorical variables were compared with Fisher's exact test. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant., Results: A total of 65 patients aged between one year and 84 years were included in this study. While the age of the 52 patients (32 male and 20 female) in the non- transplant group ranged from 17 years to 84 years, the age of the 13 patients (nine male and four female) in the transplant group ranged from one year to 64 years. Statistically significant differences were noted between both groups concerning WBC (p=0.002), neutrophil (p=0.002), lymphocyte (p=0.032), platelets (p=0.032), RDW (p=0.001), CRP (p=0.009), PNR (p=0.042), WNR (p=0.03), and appendiceal length (p<0.001). The negative appendectomy rate was relatively higher in transplant than the non-transplant group but this difference was not statistically significant (30.8% vs. 21.2%; p=0.477). Perforated acute appendicitis occurred more frequently in the transplant group; however, this difference was not statistically significant (30.8% vs. 9.6%; p=0.070)., Conclusion: WBC and neutrophil were lower in the LT group; however, the CRP and RDW were higher in the LT group. Further, perforation and negative appendectomy rates were higher in the LT group, although this difference was not statistically significant.
