Experimental studies on steam condensation with noncondensable gas have been conducted by previous investigators and several correlations were proposed based on the experimental data. However, these correlations have limited applicability because of the experimental conditions of the data used in their development. This study developed a new condensation model that accounts for the condensation on the curved and flat outer walls of vertical heat exchangers. The developed model is based on previous experimental data obtained from plates and tubes under steam with noncondensable gas conditions. The proposed condensation model considers the condensate film and diffusion of the steam–air mixture. The condensation model is applicable to a range of parameter values: air mass fraction 0.08–0.91, wall subcooling 9.1–73.5 K, Rayleigh number 3.8 × 107–1.4 × 1013, suction factor 1.02–2.90, heat transfer tube to vessel area ratio 0.11–2.63, and curvature factor 1.0–2.5. The model predicts the condensation heat transfer coefficient with a root mean square error of 12.0% for the plate and tube data. Notably, the model predictions remain reasonable even as the air mass fraction approaches zero. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
