BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: We studied the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES), represented by household income, and the prevalence of anemia and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) among adolescent girls in Korea. SUBJECTS/METHODS: The samples were based on the data from a four-year (2008- 2011) collection for the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1312 girls, age 10-18 years). The survey included demographic, anthropometric, biochemical and nutritional parameters. A multiple regression analysis after adjusting for age, body mass index (BMI), red blood cell count, white blood cell count and red meat intake was performed. Anemia was defined as hemoglobin level lower than 11.5 g/dl for ages 10-11 years and 12.0g/dl for ages 12-14 years. Iron deficiency was defined as serum ferritin level below 15 mg/l. RESULTS: The prevalences of anemia and IDA in Korean girls were 5.3 and 4.2%, respectively. Girls with anemia were older, taller, weighed more, had higher BMI, had higher portion of menarche experience and consumed less red meat than girls without anemia. Girls with higher income had lower anemia prevalence and consumed more iron and vitamins. Logistic regression analysis showed a decreasing trend in anemia prevalence as household income increased. Correlation analysis demonstrated that there is a relationship between household income and serum hemoglobin and ferritin levels (P = 0.003 and P = 0.026, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Higher SES leads to lower prevalence of anemia and IDA in Korean adolescent girls. This may be due to the fact that higher SES individuals consume more iron and vitamin C. - Abstract
Aims/hypothesis: Liraglutide is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogue that has been demonstrated to successfully treat diabetes and promote weight loss. The mechanisms by which liraglutide confers weight loss remain to be fully clarified. Thus, we investigated whether GLP-1 receptors are expressed in human brains and whether liraglutide administration affects neural responses to food cues in diabetic individuals (primary outcome). Methods: In 22 consecutively studied human brains, expression of GLP-1 receptors in the hypothalamus, medulla oblongata and parietal cortex was examined using immunohistochemistry. In a randomised (assigned by the pharmacy using a randomisation enrolment table), placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover trial, 21 individuals with type 2 diabetes (18 included in analysis due to lack or poor quality of data) were treated with placebo and liraglutide for a total of 17 days each (0.6 mg for 7 days, 1.2 mg for 7 days, and 1.8 mg for 3 days). Participants were eligible if they had type 2 diabetes and were currently being treated with lifestyle changes or metformin. Participants, caregivers, people doing measurements and/or examinations, and people assessing the outcomes were blinded to the medication assignment. We studied metabolic changes as well as neurocognitive and neuroimaging (functional MRI) of responses to food cues at the clinical research centre of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Results: Immunohistochemical analysis revealed the presence of GLP-1 receptors on neurons in the human hypothalamus, medulla and parietal cortex. Liraglutide decreased activation of the parietal cortex in response to highly desirable (vs less desirable) food images (p < 0.001; effect size: placebo 0.53 ± 0.24, liraglutide −0.47 ± 0.18). No significant adverse effects were noted. In a secondary analysis, we observed decreased activation in the insula and putamen, areas involved in the reward system. Furthermore, we showed that increased ratings of hunger and appetite correlated with increased brain activation in response to highly desirable food cues while on liraglutide, while ratings of nausea correlated with decreased brain activation. Conclusions/interpretation: For the first time, we demonstrate the presence of GLP-1 receptors in human brains. We also observe that liraglutide alters brain activity related to highly desirable food cues. Our data point to a central mechanism contributing to, or underlying, the effects of liraglutide on metabolism and weight loss. Future studies will be needed to confirm and extend these findings in larger samples of diabetic individuals and/or with the higher doses of liraglutide (3 mg) recently approved for obesity. The reaction $\gamma p \rightarrow \omega p$ $(\omega \rightarrow \pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$ and $\pi^0\rightarrow\gamma\gamma)$ has been studied in $ep$ interactions using the ZEUS detector at photon-proton centre-of-mass energies between $70$ and $90 GeV$ and $|t| < 0.6 GeV^2$, where $t$ is the squared four momentum transferred at the proton vertex.The elastic \ome photoproduction cross section has been measured to be $\sigma_{\gamma p\rightarrow \omega p} = 1.21\pm 0.12\pm 0.23 \mu b$. The differential cross section $d\sigma_{\gamma p\rightarrow \omega p} /d|t|$ has an exponential shape $e^{-b |t|}$ with a slope $b = 10.0\pm 1.2\pm 1.3 GeV^{-2}$. The angular distributions of the decay pions are consistent with s-channel helicity conservation. When compared to low energy data, the features of $\omega$ photoproduction as measured at HERA energies are in agreement with those of a soft diffractive process. In deep inelastic neutral current scattering of positrons and protons at the center of mass energy of 300 GeV, we observe, with the ZEUS detector, events with a high energy neutron produced at very small scattering angles with respect to the proton direction. The events constitute a fixed fraction of the deep inelastic, neutral current event sample independent of Bjorken $x$ and $Q^2$ in the range $ 3 \cdot 10^{-4} < \xbj < 6\cdot 10^{-3}$ and $10 < Q^2, PS file including 4 figures First replacement due to display problems with fig. 3. The production of phi mesons in the reaction e(+)p --> e(+)phi p (phi --> K+K-), for 7 < Q(2) < 25 GeV2 and for virtual photon-proton centre of mass energies (W) in the range 42-134 GeV, has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA. When compared to lower energy data at similar Q(2), the results show that the gamma*p --> phi p cross section rises strongly with W. This behaviour is similar to that previously found for the gamma*p --> rho(0)p cross section. This strong dependence cannot be explained by production through soft pomeron exchange, It is, however, consistent with perturbative QCD expectations, where it reflects the rise of the gluon momentum density in the proton at small x. The ratio of sigma(phi)/sigma(rho(0)), which has previously been determined by ZEUS to be 0.065 +/- 0.013 (stat.) in photoproduction at a mean W of 70 GeV, is measured to be 0.18 +/- 0.05 (stat.) +/- 0.03 (syst.) at a mean Q(2) of 12.3 GeV2 and mean W of approximate to 100 GeV and is thus approaching at large Q(2) the value of 2/9 predicted from the quark charges of the vector mesons and a flavour independent production mechanism.

Deep inelastic charged-current reactions have been studied ine+pande−pcollisions at a center of mass energy of about 300GeV in the kinematic regionQ2>200GeV2andx>0.006 using the ZEUS detector at HERA. The integrated cross sections forQ2>200GeV2are found to be and . Differential cross sections have been measured as functions of the variablesx, yandQ2. A measurement of inclusive charged particle distributions in deep inelastic $ep$ scattering for $\gamma^* p$ centre-of-mass energies $75< W < 175$~GeV and momentum transfer squared $10< Q^2 < 160$~GeV$^2$ from the ZEUS detector at HERA is presented. The differential charged particle rates in the $\gamma^* p$ centre-of-mass system as a function of the scaled longitudinal momentum, $x_F$, and of the transverse momentum, $p_t^*$ and $\,\,$ , as a function of $x_F$, $W$ and $Q^2$ are given. Separate distributions are shown for events with (LRG) and without (NRG) a rapidity gap with respect to the proton direction. The data are compared with results from experiments at lower beam energies, with the naive quark parton model and with parton models including perturbative QCD corrections. The comparison shows the importance of the higher order QCD processes. Significant differences of the inclusive charged particle rates between NRG and LRG events at the same $W$ are observed. The value of $\,\,$ for LRG events with a hadronic mass $M_X$, which excludes the forward produced baryonic system, is similar to the $\,\,$ value observed in fixed target experiments at $W \approx M_X$., Comment: 34 pages, latex, 9 figures appended as uuencoded file. The differential cross section dσ/dt for elastic ρ0 photoproduction, γp → ρ0ρ (ρ0 → π+π-), has been measured in ep interactions at HERA. The squared four-momentum exchanged at the proton vertex, t, has been determined directly by measuring the momentum of the scattered proton using the ZEUS Leading Proton Spectrometer (LPS), a large scale system of silicon micro-strip detectors operating close to the HERA proton beam. The LPS allows the measurement of the momentum of high energy protons scattered at small angles with accuracies of 0.4% for the longitudinal momentum and 5 MeV for the transverse momentum. Photoproduction of ρ0 mesons has been investigated in the interval 0.073 < |t| < 0.40 GeV2, for photon virtualities Q2 < 1 GeV2 and photon-proton centre-of-mass energies W between 50 and 100 GeV. In the measured range, the t distribution exhibits an exponential shape with a slope parameter b = 9.8 ± 0.8 (stat.) ± 1.1 (syst.) GeV-2. The use of the LPS eliminates the contamination from events with diffractive dissociation of the proton into low mass states. © Springler-Verlag 1997.

Using the ZEUS detector at the HERA electron-proton collider, we have searched for lepton flavor violation in ep collisions at a center-of-mass energy s^1/2 of 300 GeV. Events of the type e + p -> lepton + X with a final-state lepton (mu or tau) of high transverse momentum, were sought. No evidence was found for lepton flavor violation in the combined 1993 and 1994 data samples, for which the integrated luminosities were 0.84 pb^-1 for e- p collisions and 2.94 pb^-1 for e+ p collisions. Limits on coupling vs. mass are provided for leptoquarks and R-parity violating squarks. For flavor violating couplings of electromagnetic strength, we set 95% confidence level lower limits on leptoquark masses between 207 GeV and 272 GeV, depending on the leptoquark species and final-state lepton. Objectives: Auditory brainstem implants (ABI) are designed to be applied in patients with lesions occurring between the cochlear and cochlear nuclei. As ABI were not widely performed in Korea so far, here we report a case of ABI. Material and Method: 29-year-old woman, diagnosed of neurofibromatosis type II(NF2), who previously took right acoustic schwannoma removal via retrosigmoid approach and thoracic spinal Schwannoma removal, had severe bilateral hearing loss. Right side was deaf and left side pure tone average was 75dB. On auditory brainstem response test, both sides showed no response. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed 3cm, 3.5cm sized extra axial masses at bilateral cerebellopontine angle (Right, left consecutively). By tranlabyrinthine approach we co-operated with Neurosurgery department and removed the tumor on the left side and placed the electrode array near the lateral recess of 4th ventricle. - Abstract
Background and Aim: Evidence of the relationship between serum vitamin D levels and cardiovascular risk factors in children is limited. We investigated the associations between serum vitamin D levels (25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D]) and obesity and metabolic syndrome and its components in Korean children., Methods and Results: We recruited 1660, nine-year-old, Korean children (904 boys and 756 girls) who voluntarily participated in this study while being examined during school-based health examinations. We measured anthropometric variables (height and weight), metabolic parameters (blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, triglyceride, and HDL cholesterol levels) and serum vitamin D levels. We analyzed the data using multivariate logistic regression models. Mean 25(OH)D levels were lower in children defined as obese or abdominally obese (P <0.001). When serum levels of 25(OH)D were divided into quartiles, BMI, waist circumference, and triglyceride levels were lower, and HDL cholesterol levels were higher, as vitamin D levels increased. Using children from the highest quartile of 25(OH)D levels as a referent, the adjusted ORs (95% CI) for obesity in those in the third, second, and lowest quartiles of 25(OH)D levels were 1.55 (1.01-2.40), 1.87 (1.22-2.85), and 2.59 (1.71-3.90), respectively (P for trend <0.001). For abdominal obesity the ORs (CI) were 2.08 (1.20-3.60), 2.32 (1.36-3.95), and 2.96 (1.75-5.00) (P for trend<0.001), and for metabolic syndrome they were 2.60 (1.08-6.30), 4.00 (1.73-9.26), and 4.25 (1.84-9.85), respectively (P for trend <0.05)., Conclusions: We found low vitamin D levels in Korean children to be associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome. Insufficient serum vitamin D levels in children may be a risk factor of obesity and metabolic syndrome., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.)
