Search

When using the unit cell average of first moment data from four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM) to characterize ferroelectric materials, a variety of sources of systematic errors needs to be taken into account. In particular, these are the magnitude of the acceleration voltage, STEM probe semi-convergence angle, sample thickness, and sample tilt out of zone axis. Simulations show that a systematic error of calculated electric fields using the unit cell averaged momentum transfer originates from violation of point symmetry within the unit cells. Thus, values can easily exceed those of potential polarization-induced electric fields in ferroelectrics. Importantly, this systematic error produces deflection gradients between different domains seemingly representing measured fields. However, it could be shown that for PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3, many adjacent domains exhibit a relative crystallographic mistilt and in-plane rotation. The experimental results show that the method gives qualitative domain contrast. Comparison of the calculated electric field with the systematic error showed that the domain contrast of the unit cell averaged electric fields is mainly caused by dynamical scattering effects and the electric field plays only a minor role, if present at all.

The luminescence of InxGa1−xN nanowires (NWs) is frequently reported with large red-shifts as compared to the theoretical value expected from the average In content. Both compositional fluctuations and radial built-in fields were considered accountable for this effect, depending on the size, structure, composition, and surrounding medium of the NWs. In the present work, the emission properties of InGaN/GaN NWs grown by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy are investigated in a comprehensive study combining ultraviolet-Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) on vertical arrays, polarization-dependent PL on bundles of a few NWs, scanning transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and calculations of the band profiles. The roles of inhomogeneous In distribution and radial fields in the context of optical emission properties are addressed. The radial built-in fields are found to be modest, with a maximum surface band bending below 350 meV. On the other hand, variations in the local In content have been observed that give rise to potential fluctuations whose impact on the emission properties is shown to prevail over band-bending effects. Two luminescence bands with large positive and moderate negative polarization ratios of ≈+80% and ≤−60%, respectively, were observed. The red-shift in the luminescence is associated with In-rich inclusions in the NWs due to thermodynamic decomposition during growth. The negative polarization anisotropy is suggested to result from spontaneously formed superlattices in the In-rich regions of the NWs. The NWs show a preferred orthogonal absorption due to the dielectric boundary conditions and highlight the extreme sensitivity of these structures towards light polarization.

The influence of self-assembled short-period superlattices (SPSLs) on the structural and optical properties of InGaN/GaN nanowires (NWs) grown by PAMBE on Si (111) was investigated by STEM, EDXS, µ-PL analysis and k·p simulations. STEM analysis on single NWs indicates that in most of the studied nanostructures, SPSLs self-assemble during growth. The SPSLs display short-range ordering of In-rich and In-poor InxGa1-xN regions with a period of 2–3 nm that are covered by a GaN shell and that transition to a more homogenous InxGa1-xN core. Polarization- and temperature-resolved PL analysis performed on the same NWs shows that they exhibit a strong parallel polarized red-yellow emission and a predominantly perpendicular polarized blue emission, which are ascribed to different In-rich regions in the nanostructures. The correlation between STEM, µ-PL and k·p simulations provides better understanding of the rich optical emission of complex III-N nanostructures and how they are impacted by structural properties, yielding the significant impact of strain on self-assembly and spectral emission. We report the synthesis and spectroscopic characteristics of two different sets of carbon dots (CDs) formed by hydrothermal reaction between citric acid and polyethylenimine (PEI) or 2,3-diaminopyridine (DAP). Although the formation of amide-based species and the presence of citrazinic acid type derivates assumed to be responsible for a blue emission is confirmed for both CDs by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry, a higher abundance of sp2-hybridized nitrogen is observed for DAP-based CDs, which causes a red-shift of the n-π* absorption band relative to the one of PEI-based CDs. These CD systems possess high photoluminescence quantum yields (QY) of ∼40% and ∼48% at neutral pH, demonstrating a possible tuning of the optical properties by the amine precursor. pH-Dependent spectroscopic studies revealed a drop in QY to < 9% (pH ∼ 1) and < 21% (pH ∼ 12) for both types of CDs under acidic and basic conditions. In contrast, significant differences in the pH-dependency of the n-π* transitions are found for both CD types which are ascribed to different (de)protonation sequences of the CD-specific fluorophores and functional groups using zeta potential analysis.

We report a study of scattering dynamics in crystals employing momentum-resolved scanning transmission electron microscopy under varying illumination conditions. As we perform successive changes of the probe focus, multiple real-space signals are obtained in dependence of the shape of the incident electron wave. With support from extensive simulations, each signal is shown to be characterised by an optimum focus for which the contrast is maximum and which differs among different signals. For instance, a systematic focus mismatch is found between images formed by high-angle scattering, being sensitive to thickness and chemical composition, and the first moment in diffraction space, being sensitive to electric fields. It follows that a single recording at one specific probe focus is usually insufficient to characterise materials comprehensively. Most importantly, we demonstrate in experiment and simulation that the second moment (mu(20) + mu(02)) = < p(2)> of the diffracted intensity exhibits a contrast maximum when the electron probe is focused at the top and bottom faces of the specimen, making the presented concept attractive for measuring local topography. Given the versatility of < p(2)>, we furthermore present a detailed study of its large-angle convergence both analytically using the Mott scattering approach, and by dynamical simulations using the multislice algorithm including thermal diffuse scattering. Both approaches are in very good agreement and yield logarithmic divergence with increasing scattering angle.

Progress towards analysing transitions between steady states demands improvements in time-resolved imaging, both for fundamental research and for applications in information technology. Transmission electron microscopy is a powerful technique for investigating the atomic structure, chemical composition and electromagnetic properties of materials with high spatial resolution and precision. However, the extraction of information about dynamic processes in the ps time regime is often not possible without extensive modification to the instrument while requiring careful control of the operation conditions to not compromise the beam quality. Here, we avoid these drawbacks by combining a delay line detector with continuous illumination in a transmission electron microscope. We visualize the gyration of a magnetic vortex core in real space and show that magnetization dynamics up to frequencies of 2.3 GHz can be resolved with down to ∼122ps temporal resolution by studying the interaction of an electron beam with a microwave magnetic field. In electron cryomicroscopy (cryo-EM), molecular images of vitrified biological samples are obtained by conventional transmission microscopy (CTEM) using large underfocuses and subsequently computationally combined into a high-resolution three-dimensional structure. Here, we apply scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) using the integrated differential phase contrast mode also known as iDPC–STEM to two cryo-EM test specimens, keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) and tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). The micrographs show complete contrast transfer to high resolution and enable the cryo-EM structure determination for KLH at 6.5 Å resolution, as well as for TMV at 3.5 Å resolution using single-particle reconstruction methods, which share identical features with maps obtained by CTEM of a previously acquired same-sized TMV data set. These data show that STEM imaging in general, and in particular the iDPC–STEM approach, can be applied to vitrified single-particle specimens to determine near-atomic resolution cryo-EM structures of biological macromolecules.

Vertical van der Waals heterostructures of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides realize moir\'e systems with rich correlated electron phases and moir\'e exciton phenomena. For material combinations with small lattice mismatch and twist angles as in MoSe$_2$-WSe$_2$, however, lattice reconstruction eliminates the canonical moir\'e pattern and instead gives rise to arrays of periodically reconstructed nanoscale domains and mesoscopically extended areas of one atomic registry. Here, we elucidate the role of atomic reconstruction in MoSe$_2$-WSe$_2$ heterostructures synthesized by chemical vapor deposition. With complementary imaging down to the atomic scale, simulations, and optical spectroscopy methods we identify the coexistence of moir\'e-type cores and extended moir\'e-free regions in heterostacks with parallel and antiparallel alignment. Multilayers that comprise thin films of heavy metals and ferromagnets have been shown to host Néel-type magnetic skyrmions at room temperature. Fresnel defocus imaging in Lorentz transmission electron microscopy is a widely used technique for recording magnetic information about skyrmions. However, the visibility of Néel-type skyrmions in Fresnel defocus images is typically low, both because only a small component of their magnetic field contributes to the signal and because of the presence of diffraction contrast from the polycrystalline multilayer structure. Here, we take advantage of the out-of-plane hysteresis in such samples to record background-subtracted Fresnel defocus images. We demonstrate an improvement in magnetic signal-to-noise ratio and spatial resolution by a factor of 3 for a (Pt/Co/NiFe)×5 multilayer. We also use simulated Fresnel defocus images of Néel-type magnetic skyrmions to understand the influence of defocus on apparent skyrmion size.

Recent advances in the development of electron and X-ray detectors have opened up the possibility to detect single events from which its time of arrival can be determined with nanosecond resolution. This allows observing time correlations between electrons and X-rays in the transmission electron microscope. In this work, a novel setup is described which measures individual events using a silicon drift detector and digital pulse processor for the X-rays and a Timepix3 detector for the electrons. This setup enables recording time correlation between both event streams while at the same time preserving the complete conventional electron energy loss (EELS) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) signal. We show that the added coincidence information improves the sensitivity for detecting trace elements in a matrix as compared to conventional EELS and EDX. Furthermore, the method allows the determination of the collection efficiencies without the use of a reference sample and can subtract the background signal for EELS and EDX without any prior knowledge of the background shape and without pre-edge fitting region. We discuss limitations in time resolution arising due to specificities of the silicon drift detector and discuss ways to further improve this aspect.

Magnetic nanoparticles are highly promising for the usage in various biomedical applications including magnetic particle imaging (MPI), cancer hyperthermia treatment or as drug carriers. The present study aims at assessing in vitro biocompatibility of two commercially available magnetic iron oxide nanoparticle formulations: dextran-based magnetic nanoparticle synomag-D and bionized nanoferrite BNF-starch. Biological performance of both nanoparticle formulations were studied in human endothelial cells by analyzing cell viability and nanoparticle internalization in order to judge their suitability as theranostics.

In this paper we perform angular resolved annular-dark field (ADF) scanning-transmission electron microscopy (STEM) to study the scattered intensity in an InGaN layer buried in GaN as a function of the scattering angle. We achieved angular resolution with a motorized iris aperture in front of the ADF detector. Using this setup, we investigated how the intensities measured in various angular ranges agree with multislice simulations in the frozen-lattice approximation. We observed a strong influence of relaxation induced surface-strain fields on the ADF intensity, measured its angular characteristics and compared the result with simulations. To assess the agreement of the measured intensity with simulations, we evaluated the specimen thickness in GaN and the indium concentration in InGaN for each angular interval by comparing the measured intensities with simulations. The thickness was strongly overestimated for scattering angles below 40mrad and also the evaluated indium concentration varies with the considered angular range. Using simulations, we investigated which angular ranges show a high sensitivity to variations of the thickness and which intervals strongly depend on the indium concentration. By combining two angular intervals, the indium concentration and the specimen thickness were determined simultaneously, which has potential advantages over the usual quantification method. It is shown that inelastic scattering, surface contamination and mistilt can have an influence on the measured intensity, especially at lower scattering angles below 30-50mrad, which might explain the observed difference between the frozen lattice simulation and the experiment.

The angle-resolved electron scattering is investigated in scanning-transmission electron microscopy (STEM) using a motorised iris aperture placed above a conventional annular detector. The electron intensity scattered into various angle ranges is compared with simulations that were carried out in the frozen-lattice approximation. As figure of merit for the agreement of experiment and simulation we evaluate the specimen thickness which is compared with the thickness obtained from position-averaged convergent beam electron diffraction (PACBED). We find deviations whose strengths depend on the angular range of the detected electrons. As possible sources of error we investigate, for example, the influences of amorphous surface layers, inelastic scattering (plasmon excitation), phonon-correlation within the frozen-lattice approach, and distortions in the diffraction plane of the microscope. The evaluation is performed for four experimental thicknesses and two angle-resolved STEM series under different camera lengths. The results clearly show that especially for scattering angles below 50 mrad, it is mandatory that the simulations take scattering effects into account which are usually neglected for simulating high-angle scattering. Most influences predominantly affect the low-angle range, but also high scattering angles can be affected (e.g. by amorphous surface covering).

Modern quantitative TEM methods such as the ζ -factor technique require precise knowledge of the electron beam current. To this end, a macroscopic Faraday cup was designed and constructed. It can replace the viewing screen in the projection chamber of a TEM and guarantees highly accurate measurement of the electron beam with precision only limited by the used amperemeter. The easy to install, affordable device is shown to be highly apt for precision measurement of currents > 5 pA . The Faraday cup results are used for an assessment and a comparison of various other beam current measurement methods. It is found that the built-in screen amperemeter of the used TEM is quite inaccurate and that measurements using the screen in general tend to underestimate the current. If present, the drift tube of a spectrometer can also be used as a Faraday cup, but certain described peculiarities have to be taken into account. Direct ultrafast electron detection cameras allow precise measurement at very small currents. For the electron counting technique, which exploits single electron detection capabilities of STEM detectors, a systematic current underestimation was observed and investigated. This results in a reformulated routine for the method and with these improvements it is demonstrated to be capable of accurate high-precision measurements for currents 5 pA .

A reformulated implementation of single-sideband ptychography enables analysis and display of live detector data streams in 4D scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) using the LiberTEM open-source platform. This is combined with live first moment and further virtual STEM detector analysis. Processing of both real experimental and simulated data shows the characteristics of this method when data is processed progressively, as opposed to the usual offline processing of a complete dataset. In particular, the single side band method is compared to other techniques such as the enhanced ptychographic engine in order to ascertain its capability for structural imaging at increased specimen thickness. Qualitatively interpretable live results are obtained also if the sample is moved, or magnification is changed during the analysis. This allows live optimization of instrument as well as specimen parameters during the analysis. The methodology is especially expected to improve contrast- and dose-efficient in-situ imaging of weakly scattering specimens, where fast live feedback during the experiment is required., 14 pages, 11 figures. 4D-scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM) can be used to measure electric fields such as atomic fields or polarization-induced electric fields in crystal heterostructures. The paper focuses on effects occurring in 4D-STEM at interfaces, where two model systems are used: an AlN/GaN nanowire superlattice as well as a GaN/vacuum interface. Two different methods are applied: First, we employ the centre-of mass (COM) technique which uses the average momentum transfer evaluated from the intensity distribution in the diffraction pattern. Second, we measure the shift of the undiffracted disc (disc-detection method) in nano-beam electron diffraction (NBED). Both methods are applied to experimental and simulated 4D-STEM data sets. We find for both techniques distinct variations in the momentum transfer at interfaces between materials: In both model systems, peaks occur at the interfaces and we investigate possible sources and routes of interpretation. In case of the AlN/GaN superlattice, the COM and disc-detection methods are used to measure internal polarization-induced electric fields and we observed a reduction of the measured fields with increasing specimen thickness.

In this paper, we present a comprehensive investigation of the epitaxial growth of ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{2}{\mathrm{SiO}}_{4}$ on Si(001), a system in which neither crystal symmetry nor lattice constants match in a simple manner. In addition, it has the potential to become the first crystalline high-$k$ gate dielectric. We combined x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, and aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) in order to optimize the epitaxial growth by molecular beam epitaxy. Our focus was on the formation of a high quality crystalline interface. The films were grown by a co-deposition method that requires no diffusion of Si from the substrate. An annealing temperature of $400{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}\mathrm{C}$ turned out to be sufficient to form chemically homogeneous films. However, crystalline films require an annealing step to $670\text{--}690{\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}\mathrm{C}$ for the formation of the epitaxial interface necessary for breaking Si-O bonds. STEM confirms that the interface is atomically sharp and that a single layer of the silicate is changed to a ($2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}3$) structure at the interface from the ($2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}1.5$) bulk structure. Based on our experimental results, we propose a geometrical model for the epitaxial interface. The growth of films with an understoichiometric Si flux leads to the formation of a near-surface Ba silicide that does not restrict the epitaxial silicate growth.

In electron microscopy, the maximum a posteriori (MAP) probability rule has been introduced as a tool to determine the most probable atomic structure from high-resolution annular dark-field (ADF) scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) images exhibiting low contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR). Besides ADF imaging, STEM can also be applied in the annular bright-field (ABF) regime. The ABF STEM mode allows to directly visualize light-element atomic columns in the presence of heavy columns. Typically, light-element nanomaterials are sensitive to the electron beam, limiting the incoming electron dose in order to avoid beam damage and leading to images exhibiting low CNR. Therefore, it is of interest to apply the MAP probability rule not only to ADF STEM images, but to ABF STEM images as well. In this work, the methodology of the MAP rule, which combines statistical parameter estimation theory and model-order selection, is extended to be applied to simultaneously acquired ABF and ADF STEM images. For this, an extension of the commonly used parametric models in STEM is proposed. Hereby, the effect of specimen tilt has been taken into account, since small tilts from the crystal zone axis affect, especially, ABF STEM intensities. Using simulations as well as experimental data, it is shown that the proposed methodology can be successfully used to detect light elements in the presence of heavy elements.

Off-axis electron holography and first moment STEM are sensitive to electromagnetic potentials or fields, respectively. In this work, we investigate in what sense the results obtained from both techniques are equivalent and work out the major differences. The analysis is focused on electrostatic (Coulomb) potentials at atomic spatial resolution. It is shown that the probe-forming/objective aperture strongly affects the reconstructed electrostatic potentials and that, as a result of the different illumination setups, dynamical diffraction effects show a specific response with increasing specimen thickness. It is shown that thermal diffuse scattering is negligible for a wide range of specimen thicknesses, when evaluating the first moment of diffraction patterns.

Strain analyses from experimental series of nano-beam electron diffraction (NBED) patterns in scanning transmission electron microscopy are performed for different specimen tilts. Simulations of NBED series are presented for which strain analysis gives results that are in accordance with experiment. This consequently allows to study the relation between measured strain and actual underlying strain. A two-tilt method which can be seen as lowest-order electron beam precession is suggested and experimentally implemented. Strain determination from NBED series with increasing beam convergence is performed in combination with the experimental realization of a probe-forming aperture with a cross inside. It is shown that using standard evaluation techniques, the influence of beam convergence on spatial resolution is lower than the influence of sharp rings around the diffraction disc which occur at interfaces and which are caused by the tails of the intensity distribution of the electron probe. Ultrathin bimetallic nanowires are of importance and interest for applications in electronic devices such as sensors and heterogeneous catalysts. In this work, we have designed a new, highly reproducible and generalized wet chemical method to synthesize uniform and monodispersed Au-based alloy (AuCu, AuPd, and AuPt) nanowires with tunable composition using microwave-assisted reduction at the liquid-liquid interface. These ultrathin alloy nanowires are below 4 nm in diameter and about 2 μm long. Detailed microstructural characterization shows that the wires have an face centred cubic (FCC) crystal structure, and they have low-energy twin-boundary and stacking-fault defects along the growth direction. The wires exhibit remarkable thermal and mechanical stability that is critical for important applications. The alloy wires exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity for methanol oxidation in an alkaline medium.

Reversible macroscopic length changes in nanoporous structures can be achieved by applying electric potentials or by exposing them to different gases or liquids. Thus, these materials are interesting candidates for applications as sensors or actuators. Macroscopic length changes originate from microscopic changes of crystal lattice parameters. In this report, we show spatially resolved measurements of crystal lattice strain in dealloyed nanoporous gold. The results confirm theory by indicating a compression of the lattice along the axis of cylindrically shaped ligaments and an expansion in radial direction. Furthermore, we show that curved npAu surfaces show inward relaxation of the surface layer. (Figure presented) IMPACT STATEMENT We show spatially resolved measurements of strain in nanoporous gold confirming theory: Crystal lattice is compressed along the axis of cylindrical ligaments and expanded in radial direction, surfaces relax inward.

In this work, we analyse the microstructure and local chemical composition of green-emitting Inx Ga1-x N/GaN quantum well (QW) heterostructures in correlation with their emission properties. Two samples of high structural quality grown by metalorganic vapour phase epitaxy (MOVPE) with a nominal composition of x = 0.15 and 0.18 indium are discussed. The local indium composition is quantitatively evaluated by comparing scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) images to simulations and the local indium concentration is extracted from intensity measurements. The calculations point out that the measured indium fluctuations may be correlated to the large width and intensity decrease of the PL emission peak.

Small magnetic nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution are of great interest for several biomedical applications. When the size of the particles decreases, the magnetic moment of the particles decreases. This leads to a significant increase in the separation time by several orders of magnitude. Therefore, in the present study the separation processes of bionized nanoferrites (BNF) with different sizes and concentrations were investigated with the commercial Sepmag Q system. It was found that an increasing initial particle concentration leads to a reduction of the separation time for large nanoparticles due to the higher probability of building chains. Small nanoparticles showed exactly the opposite behavior with rising particle concentration up to 0.1 mg(Fe)/ml. For higher iron concentrations the separation time remains constant and the measured Z-average decreases in the supernatant at same time intervals. At half separation time a high yield with decreasing hydrodynamic diameter of particles can be obtained using higher initial particle concentrations.

We report the mapping of polarization-induced internal electric fields in AlN/GaN nanowire heterostructures at unit cell resolution as a key for the correlation of optical and structural phenomena in semiconductor optoelectronics. Momentum-resolved aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy is employed as a new imaging mode that simultaneously provides four-dimensional data in real and reciprocal space. We demonstrate how internal mesoscale and atomic electric fields can be separated in an experiment, which is verified by comprehensive dynamical simulations of multiple electron scattering. A mean difference of $5.3\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.5\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{MV}/\mathrm{cm}$ is found for the polarization-induced electric fields in AlN and GaN, being in accordance with dedicated simulations and photoluminescence measurements in previous publications.

Heterostructures of strongly correlated oxides demonstrate various intriguing and potentially useful interfacial phenomena. LaMnO3/SrMnO3 superlattices are presented showcasing a new high-temperature ferromagnetic phase with Curie temperature, TC≈360 K, caused by electron transfer from the surface of the LaMnO3 donor layer into the neighboring SrMnO3 acceptor layer. As a result, the SrMnO3 (top)/LaMnO3 (bottom) interface shows an enhancement of the magnetization as depth-profiled by polarized neutron reflectometry. The length scale of charge transfer, λTF≈2 unit cells, is obtained from in situ growth monitoring by optical ellipsometry, supported by optical simulations, and further confirmed by high resolution electron microscopy and spectroscopy. A model of the inhomogeneous distribution of electron density in LaMnO3/SrMnO3 layers along the growth direction is concluded to account for a complex interplay between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic layers in superlattices

The fabrication of 2D systems for electronic devices is not straightforward, with top-down low-yield methods often employed leading to irregular nanostructures and lower quality devices. Here, a simple and reproducible method to trigger self-assembly of arrays of high aspect-ratio chiral copper heterostructures templated by the structural anisotropy in black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets is presented. Using quantitative atomic resolution aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging, in situ heating transmission electron microscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy arrays of heterostructures forming at speeds exceeding 100 nm s(-1) and displaying long-range order over micrometers are observed. The controlled instigation of the self-assembly of the Cu heterostructures embedded in BP is achieved using conventional electron beam lithography combined with site specific placement of Cu nanoparticles. Density functional theory calculations are used to investigate the atomic structure and suggest a metallic nature of the Cu heterostructures grown in BP. The findings of this new hybrid material with unique dimensionality, chirality, and metallic nature and its triggered self-assembly open new and exciting opportunities for next generation, self-assembling devices.

This study addresses the comparison of scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) measurements of momentum transfers using the first moment approach and the established method that uses segmented annular detectors. Using an ultrafast pixelated detector to acquire four-dimensional, momentum-resolved STEM signals, both the first moment calculation and the calculation of the differential phase contrast (DPC) signals are done for the same experimental data. In particular, we investigate the ability to correct the segment-based signal to yield a suitable approximation of the first moment for cases beyond the weak phase object approximation. It is found that the measurement of momentum transfers using segmented detectors can approach the first moment measurement as close as 0.13 h/nm in terms of a root mean square (rms) difference in 10 nm thick SrTiO3 for a detector with 16 segments. This amounts to 35% of the rms of the momentum transfers. In addition, we present a statistical analysis of the precision of first moment STEM as a function of dose. For typical experimental settings with recent hardware such as a Medipix3 Merlin camera attached to a probe-corrected STEM, we find that the precision of the measurement of momentum transfers stagnates above certain doses. This means that other instabilities such as specimen drift or scan noise have to be taken into account seriously for measurements that target, e.g., the detection of bonding effects in the charge density.

We demonstrate the feasibility of coincidence measurements in a conventional transmission electron microscope, revealing the temporal correlation between electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy events. We make use of a delay line detector with picosecond time resolution attached to a modified EELS spectrometer. We demonstrate that coincidence between both events, related to the excitation and de-excitation of atoms in a crystal, provides added information not present in the individual EELS or EDX spectra. In particular, the method provides EELS with a significantly suppressed or even removed background, overcoming the many difficulties with conventional parametric background fitting as it uses no assumptions on the shape of the background, requires no user input and does not suffer from counting noise originating from the background signal. Strain analysis by nano-beam electron diffraction allows for measurements of strain with nanometre resolution in a large field of view. This is done by evaluating distances between diffraction discs in diffraction patterns acquired while a focussed electron beam is scanned across the sample in a transmission electron microscope. The bottleneck of this method is a precise determination of diffraction disc positions, which suffers from the inner structure of the discs caused by dynamical diffraction. Electron beam precession is a tool that solves this problem but it is not commonly available in every microscope. Without precession significant progress has been reported recently by using patterned condenser apertures. The pattern of the aperture is reproduced in patterns of the diffraction discs allowing for a more precise position determination. In this report the accuracy of measured strain profiles using patterned apertures is investigated by evaluation of realistic simulations. This is done especially at interfaces between regions with different lattice plane spacing. It is found by evaluation of the simulations that measured strain profiles are more blurred and hence the accuracy at the interface is worse the more patterns are imprinted to the condenser aperture. An explanation of this effect is given and as a proof of principle a solution to this problem is provided applying geometric phase analysis ptychography.

Single crystalline magnetron sputter-deposited Ru(0001) epitaxial thin films on c-plane sapphire were prepared and used as a template for reactive CeO2 growth. Low-energy electron microscopy and diffraction, as well as transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, experiments were performed to investigate the crystallinity and morphology of the prepared films. Multiple cycles of Ar+ sputtering and high-temperature annealing produces films of exceptional surface quality. High-temperature reactive ceria growth leads to perfectly aligned triangular single-crystalline CeO2(111) islands of extraordinary morphological and structural homogeneity. At the chosen growth conditions, ceria nucleation takes place only at V-shaped surface defects on the otherwise atomically flat Ru terraces, opening up the possibility to influence the nucleation by introducing artificial surface defects using standard etching techniques. Several instrumental imperfections of transmission electron microscopes are characterized and their effects on the results of quantitative scanning electron microscopy (STEM) are investigated and quantified using simulations. Methods to either avoid influences of these imperfections during acquisition or to include them in reference calculations are proposed. Particularly, distortions inflicted on the diffraction pattern by an image-aberration corrector can cause severe errors of more than 20% if not accounted for. A procedure for their measurement is proposed here. Furthermore, afterglow phenomena and nonlinear behavior of the detector itself can lead to incorrect normalization of measured intensities. Single electrons accidentally impinging on the detector are another source of error but can also be exploited for threshold-less calibration of STEM images to absolute dose, incident beam current determination and measurement of the detector sensitivity.
