Lichen extinction occurs at rapid rates as a result of human activity, although species could potentially be rescued by conservation management based on ecophysiological knowledge. The boreal old forest cyanolichen Erioderma pedicellatum currently occurs in few sites worldwide. To protect it from extinction, it is essential to learn more about it. The last remaining good European site is a canyon with a waterfall, in a low-rainfall region of Norway. Here, a spatially restricted population of 1500–2000 thalli dominates the epiphytic vegetation of a small number of Picea abies canopies. We were able to document that 1) E. pedicellatum grew on thin branches with higher bark pH than is normal for P. abies in a canyon that provided an unusual combination of very high light, high air humidity, and cool temperatures in the growing season. However, the species did not inhabit the main waterfall spray zone. 2) Erioderma pedicellatum had a high light saturation point, high CO2 uptake at high light (≥ 600 μmol m−2 s−1) and cool temperatures (5–20 °C), and experienced strong suprasaturation depression of photosynthesis when fully hydrated. 3) It showed good tolerance of desiccation and high light; it was slightly more tolerant than the morphologically similar, but more common cyanolichen Pectenia plumbea. 4) The European population in its sunny habitat had higher water holding capacity than previously recorded in slightly shaded rainforest populations in Newfoundland, consistent with acclimation to compensate for high evaporative demands. Understanding the ecological niche and responses to critical environmental factors is essential for action plans to avoid extinction of E. pedicellatum. Methods used in this study could also be applicable for ecological understanding of other threatened lichen species.

Lichens often grow in microhabitats where they are exposed to severe abiotic stresses such as desiccation and temperature extremes. They are also often exposed to levels of light that are greater than lichen photobionts can use in carbon fixation. Unless regulated, excess energy absorbed by the photobionts can convert ground state oxygen to reactive oxygen species (ROS). These ROS can attack the photosynthetic apparatus, causing photoinhibition and photo-oxidative stress, reducing the ability of the photobionts to fix carbon. Here, we outline our current understanding of the effects of high light on lichens and the mechanisms they use to mitigate or tolerate this stress in hydrated and desiccated states. Tolerance to high light can be achieved first by lowering ROS formation, via synthesizing light screening pigments or by thermally dissipating the excess light energy absorbed; second, by scavenging ROS once formed; or third, by repairing ROS-induced damage. While the primary focus of this review is tolerance to high light in lichen photobionts, our knowledge is rather fragmentary, and therefore we also include recent findings in free-living relatives to stimulate new lines of research in the study of high light tolerance in lichens.

Ornamental jewelweed (Impatiens glandulifera Royle) is an alien invasive plant in Europe. This annual plant often grows in riparian habitats where herbicides are prohibited. Several studies have reported the negative effect on ecosystem and ecosystem services by this species. However, limited research is published on control measures and the aim of our study was to explore use of hot water and cutting to control I. glandulifera. A lab experiment showed that the lethal water temperature for seed was between 45 and 50 C. In a pot experiment with seeds in soil, emergence of I. glandulifera was reduced by 78% and 93% compared with the untreated control with volumes of hot water (80 C) of 7.2 and 14.5 L m−2, respectively. When treatments were conducted on relatively tall plants (almost 60 cm) in late June, hot water gave significantly better control than cutting. Compared with an untreated control, I. glandulifera cover was reduced by 97% and 79% after hot water and cutting, respectively. Application of hot water to smaller (I. glandulifera cover was reduced by 99% (cut below first node) and 91% (hot water and cut above first node). When relatively tall plants (almost 60 cm) were treated, hot water use was high (31.1 L m−2) and required twice as many work hours (4.8 min m−2) as cutting (2.4 min m−2). When smaller plants (−2 and 13.7 L m−2, respectively.

Elevated levels of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation may co-occur and pose cumulative hazards to biota. However, the combined effects and underlying toxicity mechanisms of different types of radiation in aquatic plants remain poorly understood. The present study aims to demonstrate how different combined toxicity prediction approaches can collectively characterise how chronic (7 days) exposure to ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation (0.5 W m−2) modulates gamma (γ) radiation (14.9, 19.5, 43.6 mGy h−1) induced stress responses in the macrophyte Lemna minor. A suite of bioassays was applied to quantify stress responses at multiple levels of biological organisation. The combined effects (no-enhancement, additivity, synergism, antagonism) were determined by two-way analysis of variance (2 W-ANOVA) and a modified Independent Action (IA) model. The toxicological responses and the potential causality between stressors were further visualised by a network of toxicity pathways. The results showed that γ-radiation or UVB alone induced oxidative stress and programmed cell death (PCD) as well as impaired oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and photosystem II (PSII) activity in L. minor. γ-radiation also activated antioxidant responses, DNA damage repair and chlorophyll metabolism, and inhibited growth at higher dose rates (≥20 mGy h−1). When co-exposed, UVB predominantly caused non-interaction (no-enhancement or additive) effects on γ-radiation-induced antioxidant gene expression, energy quenching in PSII and growth for all dose rates, whereas antagonistic effects were observed for lipid peroxidation, OXPHOS, PCD, oxidative stress, chlorophyll metabolism and genes involved in DNA damage responses. Synergistic effects were observed for changes in photochemical quenching and non-photochemical quenching, and up-regulation of antioxidant enzyme genes (GST) at one or more dose rates, while synergistic reproductive inhibition occurred at all three γ-radiation dose rates. The present study provides mechanistic knowledge, quantitative understanding and novel analytical strategies to decipher combined effects across levels of biological organisation, which should facilitate future cumulative hazard assessments of multiple stressors.

Some lichenized ascomycetes synthesize melanic pigments in their upper cortices when exposed to ultraviolet light and high solar radiation. Our previous work showed that melanized chloro- and cyanolichens from both high light and more shaded habitats were less photoinhibited than pale ones during controlled exposure to high light. However, protection from high light might not necessarily be the consequence of just sun-screening by melanins in upper cortices. An inherent problem with earlier experiments was that the photobionts of melanized thalli might have received more light than those beneath pale cortices. The photobionts may therefore have possessed other light-induced tolerance mechanisms that gave protection from photoinhibition. Here, we aimed to test directly the inherent tolerance of lichen photobionts to photoinhibition. The method involved removing the lower cortices and medullas of three lichen species, Cetraria islandica, Crocodia aurata and Lobaria pulmonaria, and exposing the photobionts to light from below. Results confirmed that most of the improvement in tolerance to photoinhibition in melanized lichens derives from fungal melanization in the upper cortex. However, in C. islandica, the most heavily melanized species, algae from melanized thalli possessed a significantly higher tolerance to photoinhibition than those from pale thalli, suggesting that photobionts can also adapt themselves to high light.

Embargo until 08 July 2020 Exposure to ambient UV-B radiation may prime protective responses towards various stressors in plants, though information about interactive effects of UV-B and gamma radiation is scarce. Here, we aimed to test whether UV-B exposure could prime acclimatisation mechanisms contributing to tolerance to low-moderate gamma radiation levels in Scots pine seedlings, and concurrently whether simultaneous UV-B and gamma exposure may have an additive adverse effect on seedlings that had previously not encountered either of these stressors. Responses to simultaneous UV-B (0.35 W m−2) and gamma radiation (10.2–125 mGy h−1) for 6 days with or without UV-B pre-exposure (0.35 W m−2, 4 days) were studied across various levels of organisation, as compared to effects of either radiation type. In contrast to UV-B, and regardless of UV-B presence, gamma radiation at ≥42.9 mGy h−1 caused increased formation of reactive oxygen species and reduced shoot length, and reduced root length at 125 mGy h−1. In all experiments there was a gamma dose rate-dependent increase in DNA damage at ≥10.8 mGy h−1, generally with additional UV-B-induced damage. Gamma-induced growth inhibition and gamma- and UV-B-induced DNA damage were still visible 44 days post-irradiation, even at 20.7 mGy h−1, probably due to genomic instability, but this was reversed after 8 months. In conclusion, there was no evidence of a protective effect of UV-B on gamma-induced growth inhibition and DNA damage in Scots pine, and no additive adverse effect of gamma and UV-B radiation on growth in spite of the additional UV-B-induced DNA damage.

Many species of lichenized ascomycetes are capable of synthesizing darkly colored melanin pigments by polymerizing phenolic compounds. Available data suggest that different clades of lichens produce various kinds of melanins, with N2-fixing Peltigeralean lichens producing N-rich DOPA or “eumelanins” and lichens from other orders producing N-poor “allomelanins.” In general, melanic lichens seem to be more common in environments with high levels of abiotic stress such as polar and montane regions, but they are by no means restricted to these habitats. Here, we review the occurrence of melanins in lichens, their chemical structure, methods of quantification and biological roles. Good evidence exists that melanins in lichens protect the mycobiont from high UV, and the photobiont against high PAR. However, given their many unique properties, it seems likely that melanins help lichens to survive a range of biotic and abiotic stresses.

Retention of trees after logging is a method of preserving epiphytic lichens; however, epiphytes’ responses to logging disturbance are insufficiently known. We aimed to characterize four viability measures — effective PSII yield (ΦPSII; a proxy for photosynthesis), maximal photosystem II efficiency (FV/FM; a proxy for photoinhibition), chlorophyll a content, and chlorophyll a/b ratio — and the functional parameter specific thallus mass (STM; a proxy for water storage) in sympatric populations of two old-growth lichens (Lobaria retigera (Bory) Trevisan and Lobaria oregana (Tuck.) Müll. Arg.) and the less old-growth dependent Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm. along recently logged forest edge gradients within retained forest patches. All species experienced substantially reduced chlorophyll contents near edges, whereas ΦPSII was lower in the two old-growth lichens than in L. pulmonaria. STM, and thus lichen water storage, did not respond to logging, probably because chlorophyll degradation reduced the carbon gain required for necessary acclimation. Reported edge effects on lichen viability were so strong that most of the epiphytic lichens in the retained forest patches were affected. Measured viability variables improved linearly with distances up to ≈120 m from the edge. To avoid logging-induced adverse impacts on the threatened epiphytic lichens of these old-growth rainforests, there is a need to retain forest patches wider than 240 m.

High relative humidity (RH) perturbs plant growth, stomatal functioning and abscisic acid (ABA) homeostasis, but the role of ABA in this physiological regulation is equivocal. To determine the role(s) of ABA in plant responses to high RH, wild-type (WT) tomato and barley plants and their respective ABA-deficient mutants flacca and Az34 (which are mutated in the same locus of the ABA biosynthesis pathway) were grown in contrasting RHs (60% and 90%) to measure biomass partitioning, stomatal traits and water relations. Surprisingly, growth RH did not affect foliar ABA levels in either species. While Az34 showed similar stomatal size and density as WT plants, flacca had larger and more abundant stomata. High RH increased stomatal size in tomato, but decreased it in barley, and decreased stomatal density in tomato, but not in barley. Altered stomatal responses in ABA-deficient plants to high RH had little effect on tomato photosynthesis, but Az34 barley showed lower photosynthesis. ABA deficiency decreased relative shoot growth rate (RGRSHOOT) in both species, yet this was counteracted by high RH increasing leaf water status in tomato, but not in barley. High RH increased RGRSHOOT in flacca, but not in WT tomatoes, while having no effect on RGRSHOOT in barley, but affecting barley net assimilation rate, leaf area ratio (LAR) and specific leaf area in an ABA-dependent manner. ABA-RH interaction affected leaf development in tomato only. Thus, different crop species show variable responses to both high RH and ABA deficiency, making it difficult to generalise on the role of ABA in growth regulation at contrasting RHs. © 2021 The Authors. During desiccation, both apparent electron transport rate (ETRapp) and photosynthetic CO2 uptake peak when external water has evaporated. External water, causing suprasaturation, weakens the strong correlation between ETRapp and CO2 uptake. Lichens are poikilohydric organisms passively regulated by ambient conditions. In theory, apparent electron transport rate (ETRapp), estimated by photosystem II yield measured in light (ΦPSII), is a proxy of photosynthetic CO2 uptake. Hydration level, however, is a complicating factor, particularly during suprasaturation that strongly reduces CO2 diffusion. Here, the cephalolichen Lobaria pulmonaria and two chlorolichens Parmelia sulcata and Xanthoria aureola were excessively hydrated before photosynthetic CO2 uptake and ΦPSII using imaging fluorescence tools were simultaneously measured while drying at 200 µmol photons m−2 s−1. CO2 uptake peaked when hydration had declined to a level equivalent to their respective internal water holding capacity (WHCinternal) i.e., the water per thallus area after blotting external water. CO2 uptake and ETRapp in all species were highly correlated at hydration levels below WHCinternal, but weaker at higher hydration (chlorolichens) or absent (cephalolichen). Yet, at a specimen level for the two chlorolichens, the correlation was strong during suprasaturation. The CO2 uptake—ETRapp relationship did not differ between measured species, but may vary between other lichens because the slope depends on cortical transmittance and fraction of electrons not used for CO2 uptake. For new lichen species, calibration of ETRapp against CO2 uptake is therefore necessary. At intrathalline scales, ΦPSII during drying initially increased along thallus margins before reaching maximum values in central portions when hydration approached WHCinternal. WHCinternal represents the optimal hydration level for lichen photosynthesis. In conclusion, ETRapp is an easily measured and reliable proxy of CO2 uptake in thalli without external water but overestimates photosynthesis during suprasaturation.

Growth in high relative air humidity (RH, >85%) affects plant morphology and causes diminished response to stomatal closing signals. Many greenhouses are prone to high RH conditions, which may negatively affect production and post-harvest quality. UV radiation induces stomatal closure in several species, and facilitates disease control. We hypothesised that UV exposure may trigger stomatal closure in pea plants (Pisum sativum) grown in high RH, thereby restoring stomatal function. The effects of UV exposure were tested on plants grown in moderate (60%) or high (90%) RH. UV exposure occurred at night, according to a disease control protocol. Lower stomatal conductance rates were found in UV-exposed plants, though UV exposure did not improve the rate of response to closing stimuli or desiccation tolerance. UV-exposed plants showed leaf curling, chlorosis, necrosis, and DNA damage measured by the presence of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPD), all of which were significantly greater in high RH plants. These plants also had lower total flavonoid content than moderate RH plants, and UV-exposed plants had less than controls. Plants exposed to UV had a higher content of cuticular layer uronic compounds than control plants. However, high RH plants had a higher relative amount of cuticular waxes, but decreased proteins and uronic compounds. Plants grown in high RH had reduced foliar antioxidant power compared to moderate RH. These results indicate that high RH plants were more susceptible to UV-induced damage than moderate RH plants due to reduced flavonoid content and oxidative stress defence.

Here, we used chlorophyll fluorescence in order to test the effect of melanisation on the ability of the lichens Cetraria islandica, Lobaria pulmonaria, Peltigera aphthosa, P. membranacea, Pseudocyphellaria gilva, and Sticta sublimbata to tolerate high-light stress. For each species, melanised and pale thalli were selected from relatively exposed and shaded individuals of the same population. For all species, melanised thalli displayed significantly less photoinhibition than pale thalli following a controlled exposure of hydrated thalli to high light. Melanised thalli were less photoinhibited than pale thalli in lichens from both high light and more shaded habitats, and those that possess either green-algal or cyanobacterial photobionts. Photoinhibition also occurred when dry lichens were exposed to high light; melanised thalli showed again less photoinhibition. Melanised thalli are less sensitive to the adverse effects of high light.

Background Pollen beetles are key pests in oilseed rape (OSR) production. These beetles use visual and olfactory cues to locate their host plants at specific phenological stages, hence trap cropping may represent an alternative pest control strategy. In this study, a trap crop strategy for spring OSR was developed. To elaborate such a trap cropping system, a pest control measure that eradicates the attracted beetles in the trap crop before they migrate further into the main crop was included in the final trap cropping strategy. Results Testing yellow-flowering turnip rape and one yellow- and two cream-coloured flowering OSR cultivars as potential crops in different trap cropping strategies, we found that pollen beetles clearly preferred turnip rape over the cream-coloured and yellow OSR cultivars, and preferred the yellow OSR cultivar over the two cream-coloured cultivars. This behaviour was related to the plant growth stage and associated volatile and colour signals of the tested cultivars. Using turnip rape as a trap crop and testing kairomone- or insecticide-assisted trap cropping as the pest control strategy was as effective as compared with whole fields treated with a standard pesticide. Conclusion Combining a turnip rape cultivar as trap crop with kairomone traps placed in the trap crop as a killing agent may enable renunciation of pesticides in spring OSR production. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Lichen photobionts in situ have an extremely UV-B tolerant photosystem II efficiency (Fv/Fm). We have quantified the UV-B-screening offered by the mycobiont and the photobiont separately. The foliose lichens Nephroma arcticum and Umbilicaria spodochroa with 1: intact or 2: removed cortices were exposed to 0.7 Wm-2 UV-BBE for 4 h. Intact thalli experienced no reduction in Fv/Fm, whereas cortex removal lowered Fv/Fm in exposed photobiont layers by 22% for U. spodochroa and by 14% for N. arcticum. We also gave this UV-B dose to algal cultures of Coccomyxa and Trebouxia, the photobiont genera of N. arcticum and U. spodochroa, respectively. UV-B caused a 56% reduction in Fv/Fm for Coccomyxa, and as much as 98% in Trebouxia. The fluorescence excitation ratio (FER) technique comparing the fluorescence from UV-B or UV-A-excitation light with blue green excitation light using a Xe-PAM fluorometer showed that these photobiont genera did not screen any UV-B or UV-A The FER technique with a Multiplex fluorometer estimated the UV-A screening of isolated algae to be 13–16%, whereas intact lichens screened 92–95% of the UV-A. In conclusion, the cortex of N. arcticum and U. spodochroa transmitted no UV-B and little UV-A to the photobiont layer beneath. Thereby, the upper lichen cortex forms an efficient fungal solar radiation screen providing a high UV-B tolerance for studied photobionts in situ. By contrast, isolated photobionts have no UV-B screening and thus depend on their fungal partners in nature.

Chlorophyll fluorescence, infrared gas exchange and photoinhibition data consistently show that vulpinic acid in L. vulpina functions as a strong blue light screening compound. The cortical lichen compounds, parietin, atranorin, usnic acid and melanins are known to screen photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), thereby protecting the underlying photobionts. The role of the toxic UV-/blue light-absorbing vulpinic acid in lichen cortices is poorly documented. By comparing controls with acetone-rinsed Letharia vulpina thalli (75% reduced vulpinic acid concentration), we aimed to test PAR screening by vulpinic acid. We exposed such thalli to blue, green and red irradiance, respectively, and recorded light quality-specific light saturation curves of CO2 uptake, quantum yields of CO2 uptake (QYCO2) and effective quantum yields of PSII (ΦPSII). We also quantified light quality-dependent photoinhibition after 4-h exposure to 400 µmol photons m−2 s−1. In controls, the greatest high light-induced reductions in CO2 uptake and ΦPSII, as well as the strongest photoinhibition [lowered maximal quantum yield of PSII (Fv/Fm)], occurred in red light, followed by green, and was low in blue light. Removal of vulpinic acid significantly exacerbated photoinhibition, reduced ΦPSII, and increased QYCO2 in blue light. By contrast, acetone rinsing had no or weak effects in green and red lights. Comparing control with acetone-rinsed thalli, blue light screening was estimated at 69% using ΦPSII data and 49% using QYCO2. To compensate for the 25% residual vulpinic acid left after rinsing, we repeated the screening estimation by comparing responses in blue and red lights. This resulted in 88% screening using ΦPSII data and 77% using QYCO2. The consistent responses in all photosynthetic parameters support the hypothesis that vulpinic acid functions as a blue light screen in L. vulpina.

Identifying lichen traits that influence hydration and photosynthetic reactivation kinetics in humid air provides insight into niche preferences. Water vapor uptake and concurring reactivation of PSII efficiency (Fv/Fm) were monitored at high temporal resolution by means of programmed balance measurements and chlorophyll fluorescence imaging during 18 h trial periods in high relative humidity (RH). Desiccated, thin and/or highly branched forest epiphytes began to reactivate PSII in thallus apices and margins within two minutes of exposure to high RH. Specific thallus mass (STM) was a strong predictor of water vapor uptake rates across species and specimens. The forest epiphytes displaying the lowest STM reached the highest levels of saturation and showed the most rapid PSII reactivation. Thicker species from sun-exposed habitats required up to 11 times longer in high RH to reach peak PSII reactivation, particularly lichens collected from open, exposed rocks. There was a clear trade-off between water storage capacity and rapid saturation from water vapor/PSII reactivation. Thin chlorolichen growth forms are thus well-adapted to exploit humid air, while thick ones likely rely on liquid water.

Chlorophyllafluorescence is often used to estimate various types of damage in lichens. In order to optimize the output and improve interpretations of such measurements the protocol for pretreatment and measuring is important. To study the effects of measurement conditions, the lichensLobaria pulmonaria,L. scrobiculata,Xanthoria parietinaandParmelia sulcatawere first stressed by high light intensities at 600 or 1000 µmol photons m−2s−1for 4 h. Then various conditions during recovery or pretreatment were used to optimize the detection of more lasting damage. Recovery from photoinhibition was incomplete in darkness, whereas light as low as 0·2 or 1·0 µmol m−2s−1resulted in complete recovery if the recovery period was long enough. Additionally, low intensity light given for1·5 h after one day in darkness caused rapid and complete recovery. In conclusion, before measuring maximal PSII efficiency (Fv/Fm) with chlorophyll fluorescence, it is important to let lichens recover in low intensity light and not in darkness, to optimize recovery from photoinhibition; dark adaptation can only be recommended if the photoinhibition status of the lichens is of interest.

Lichens are frequently used as indicators of air-borne depositions, yet the differential effect of different mineral nutrients on lichen growth is still poorly understood. Here we quantify relative lichen growth rates (RGR) in representatives of three functional groups (chloro-, cephalo-, cyanolichens; Xanthoria parietina, Lobaria pulmonaria, Lobarina scrobiculata, respectively) placed in growth cabinets and subjected to eight fertilization regimes, i.e. four concentrations of NH4NO3 with and without the addition of other essential nutrients. After the experimental period of 14 days, we were able to document: (1) most N in the sprayed solutions that could fill the lichen's water holding capacity (WHC) was taken up, except for lower uptake in the cyanolichen at high N irrigation; (2) an increase in chlorophyll a (Chl a – a proxy of photosynthetic capacity) in the chlorolichen with increasing N irrigation; (3) a strong corresponding decline in Chl a in the cyanolichen; (4) unchanged Chl a in the cephalolichen; and (5) a decline in RGR in all species with increasing N irrigation. Addition of other essential nutrients significantly boosted RGR in all species, suggesting that N was not the most limiting element. We conclude that (1) short-term growth experiments can characterize lichens’ fitness in response to mineral nutrient deposition, and that (2) WHC contributes to lichens’ capacity to capture mineral nutrients from wet depositions.

The old forest lichen Lobaria pulmonaria synthesizes melanic pigments when exposed to ultraviolet light and high solar radiation. Here, we tested the effect of melanisation on photosynthetic efficiency. Melanisation effectively reduces high-light stress in lichen photobionts, as the photobionts of melanised thalli are healthy, based on chlorophyll contents and maximum rates of photosynthesis. However, the quantum yields of both photosynthetic CO2 uptake and O2 evolution were more than 40 percent lower in melanised thalli compared with control thalli. While chlorophyll fluorescence measurements suggested that melanised and pale thalli had similar apparent electron transport rates, this result was probably an artefact caused by screening reducing the light reaching the photobionts. Melanic thalli also had a higher chlorophyll a/b ratio and more xanthophyll cycle pigments, suggesting that the photosynthetic apparatus had adapted to high light. In conclusion, while protecting photobionts from high light, melanisation clearly reduced photosynthetic efficiency. Melanised thalli will be significantly disadvantaged if light levels return to lower values, more typical for those habitats in which this shade adapted lichen is most abundant.

This study aims to quantify the size-dependency of important hydration traits in Lobaria amplissima, L. pulmonaria and L. virens sampled in sympatric populations on deciduous tree trunks in southern Norway, and to discuss possible implications of species-specific traits for the ecological niches of these old forest cephalolichens. Traits measured were thallus size (area and mass), specific thallus mass (STM), internal (WHCinternal) and external water-holding capacity (WHCexternal), and water content (WC) after shaking and after blotting. Lobaria amplissima had the highest WHCinternal, 2·6 times higher than L. pulmonaria with the lowest WHCinternal. WHCinternal, driven by STM, strongly depended on size. WHCexternal was 28% (L. virens) to 47% (L. pulmonaria) of the WHCinternal. Unlike WHCinternal, WHCexternal did not depend on thallus area, meaning that WHCexternal is proportionally higher for smaller compared with larger thalli. The most widespread species, L. pulmonaria, benefits from a flexible hydration strategy due to low STM, facilitating the use of more diverse water sources than the other two species that depend more on rain, particularly L. amplissima with the highest STM and thus relatively high WHCinternal. For L. virens, a combination of less specialized hydration traits and a low tolerance to higher light intensity probably jeopardizes its survival outside rainforest habitats.

By fluorescence imaging, we quantified how hydration traits and thallus size determine the duration of photosynthetic activity during drying in light and darkness for sympatric populations of three epiphytic old forest cephalolichens differing in specific thallus mass (STM) and growth form. Maximal PS II efficiency (FV/FM) during drying in darkness and effective PSII yield (ФPSII) during drying in light (200 μmol m−2 s−1) was repeatedly monitored in lichens under controlled conditions, using chlorophyll fluorescence imaging with simultaneous recordings of wet mass. STM shaping the water holding capacity (WHC), water content in percent at start (WC), and water loss rate per thallus area (WLR) in combination determined the duration of active periods during desiccation between (r2adj = 0.86) and within species (r2adj = 0.60–0.92). Lobaria pulmonaria with the lowest STM and the most upright growth form experienced the shortest active periods, Lobaria amplissima with the highest STM and the most prostrate growth form had the longest periods. Across the more compact species (L. amplissima, L. virens), WLR strongly declined with increasing thallus size, but weakly in the loosely attached L. pulmonaria. ФPSII, a proxy of photosynthesis, exhibited suprasaturation depression at maximal hydration. Fluorescence imaging allowed a rapid, non-invasive evaluation of the contribution of various functional traits to active periods in entire thalli during desiccation. A thick, prostrate growth form prolongs active periods by maximizing water storage, whereas a thin, loosely attached growth form uses a more flexible hydration strategy with shorter active periods.

To test the hypotheses that (1) protective mycobiont tissues and/or (2) medullary UV-B-absorbing carbon-based secondary compounds (CBSCs) protect lichen photobionts against UV-B radiation, we quantified cortical UV-transmittance and ran a three-way factorial lab experiment with (1) three UV radiation regimes, (2) photobiont layers with/without a screening cortex, and (3) with natural/reduced CBSC-concentration. We used melanin-deficient Lobaria pulmonaria from shaded forests. Maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem II ( F v/ F m) in photobionts inside thalli with natural CBSC-concentrations was not affected by any UV-regime, consistent with close to 0% measured cortical transmittance of wavelengths P P P = 0.001), mainly affecting exposed photobiont layers given short-wavelength UV radiation. Based on these findings, we conclude that the primary role of extrolites in L. pulmonaria is not to screen excess solar radiation.

Main conclusion UVB radiation caused irradiance-dependent and target-specific responses in non-UVB acclimated Lemna minor. Conceptual toxicity pathways were developed to propose causal relationships between UVB-mediated effects at multiple levels of biological organisation. Abstract Macrophytes inhabit waterways around the world and are used in hydroponics or aquaponics for different purposes such as feed and wastewater treatment and are thus exposed to elevated levels of UVB from natural and artificial sources. Although high UVB levels are harmful to macrophytes, mechanistic understanding of irradiance-dependent effects and associated modes of action in non-UVB acclimated plants still remains low. The present study was conducted to characterise the irradiance-dependent mechanisms of UVB leading to growth inhibition in Lemna minor as an aquatic macrophyte model. The L. minor were continuously exposed to UVB (0.008–4.2 W m−2) and constant UVA (4 W m−2) and photosynthetically active radiation, PAR (80 µmol m−2 s−1) for 7 days. A suite of bioassays was deployed to assess effects on oxidative stress, photosynthesis, DNA damage, and transcription of antioxidant biosynthesis, DNA repair, programmed cell death, pigment metabolism and respiration. The results showed that UVB triggered both irradiance-dependent and target-specific effects at multiple levels of biological organization, whereas exposure to UVA alone did not cause any effects. Inhibition of photosystem II and induction of carotenoids were observed at 0.23 W m−2, whereas growth inhibition, excessive reactive oxygen species, lipid peroxidation, cyclobutane pyrimidine dimer formation, mitochondrial membrane potential reduction and chlorophyll depletion were observed at 0.5–1 W m−2. Relationships between responses at different levels of biological organization were used to establish a putative network of toxicity pathways to improve our understanding of UVB effects in aquatic macrophytes under continuous UVB exposures. Additional studies under natural illuminations were proposed to assess whether these putative toxicity pathways may also be relevant for more ecologically relevant exposure scenarios.

Photobiont type influences the relative humidity threshold at which photosystem II activates in green algal lichens. Water vapor uptake alone can activate photosynthesis in lichens with green algal photobionts. However, the minimum relative humidity needed for activation is insufficiently known. The objective of this study was to quantify the humidity threshold for photosystem II (PSII) activation in a range of chlorolichen species associated with photobionts from Trebouxiaceae, Coccomyxaceae and Trentepohliaceae. These lichens exhibit distribution, habitat and substrate patterns that are likely coupled to their efficiency in utilizing water vapor at lower levels of relative humidity (RH) for photosynthesis. Using chlorophyll fluorescence imaging during water uptake from humid air of 25 species of chlorolichens representing the above photobiont groups, we monitored PSII activation within controlled chambers with constant RH at five levels ranging from 75.6 to 95.4%. The results demonstrate clear photobiont-specific activation patterns: the trentepohlioid lichens activated PSII at significantly lower RH (75.6%) than trebouxioid (81.7%) and coccomyxoid (92.0%) lichens. These responses are consistent with a preference for warm and sheltered habitats for trentepohlioid lichens, with cool and moist habitats for the coccomyxoid lichens, and with a more widespread occurrence of the trebouxioid lichens. Within each photobiont group, lichen species exposed to marine aerosols in their source habitats seemed to be activated at lower RH than lichens sampled from inland sites. High osmolyte concentration may therefore play a role in lowering a photobiont’s activation threshold. We conclude that photobiont type influences water vapor-driven photosynthetic activation of lichens, thereby shaping the ecological niches in which they occur.

High dose rates of ionizing radiation have been reported to cause adverse effects such as reduction in reproduction and growth, and damage to protein and lipids in primary producers. However, the relevant effects of ionizing radiation are still poorly understood in aquatic plants. This study was intended to characterize the biological effects and modes of action (MoAs) of ionizing radiation using gamma radiation as the prototypical stressor and duckweed Lemna minor as a model organism. Lemna minor was exposed to 1, 14, 24, 46, 70 mGy/h gamma radiation dose rates from a cobalt-60 source for 7 days following the testing principles of the OECD test guideline 221. A suite of bioassays was applied to assess the biological effects of gamma radiation at multiple levels of biological organization, including detection of reactive oxygen species (ROS), oxidative stress responses (total glutathione, tGSH; lipid peroxidation, LPO), DNA damage, mitochondrial dysfunctions (mitochondrial membrane potential, MMP), photosynthetic parameters (chlorophyll a, chl a; chlorophyll b, chl b; carotenoids; Photosystem II (PSII) performance; CO2 uptake), intercellular signaling (Ca2+ release) and growth. Gamma radiation increased DNA damage, tGSH level and Ca2+ content together with reduction in chlorophyll content, maximal PSII efficiency and CO2 uptake at dose rates between 1 and 14 mGy/h, whereas increases in cellular ROS and LPO, inhibition of MMP and growth were observed at higher dose rates (≥24 mGy/h). A network of toxicity pathways was proposed to portray the causal relationships between gamma radiation-induced physiological responses and adverse outcomes to support the development of Adverse Outcome Pathways (AOPs) for ionizing radiation-mediated effects in primary producers.

Information on the involvement of elongation-controlling hormones, particularly gibberellin (GA), in UV-B modulation of stem elongation and leaf growth, is limited. We aimed to study the effect of UV-B on levels of GA and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) as well as involvement of GA in UV-B inhibition of stem elongation and leaf expansion in pea. Reduced shoot elongation (13%) and leaf area (37%) in pea in response to a 6-h daily UV-B (0.45 W m−2) exposure in the middle of the light period for 10 days were associated with decreased levels of the bioactive GA1 in apical stem tissue (59%) and young leaves (69%). UV-B also reduced the content of IAA in young leaves (35%). The importance of modulation of GA metabolism for inhibition of stem elongation in pea by UV-B was confirmed by the lack of effect of UV-B in the le GA biosynthesis mutant. No UV-B effect on stem elongation in the la cry-s (della) pea mutant demonstrates that intact GA signalling is required. In conclusion, UV-B inhibition of shoot elongation and leaf expansion in pea depends on UV-B modulation of GA metabolism in shoot apices and young leaves and GA signalling through DELLA proteins. UV-B also affects the IAA content in pea leaves.

Ultraviolet radiation (UV) is well known to affect plant growth and development and to vary with latitude and altitude. The knowledge about the effect of high UV levels at high altitudes close to the equator on plant productivity is scarce. By using UV-transmitting and UV-blocking films, the impact of solar UV on growth and production potential of commercial pea ( Pisum sativum ) was studied at a high (2800 m above sea level (masl)) and a lower (1700 masl) altitude in Ethiopia during the dry (January–March) and wet (April–June) seasons. Morphological characteristics like plant height and number of branches as well as flowering time were affected by UV. Compared to the UV-blocking film, under the UV-transmitting film plants were 15–19% shorter and produced more branches at both altitudes and seasons. The flowering was delayed 2–5 days when exposed to UV but only minor differences were found in numbers of pods. Numbers of leaves and specific leaf area were important for pod number. These parameters were more affected by altitude and season than UV level. Also, stomatal conductance at lower altitude was affected by season and was very low (0.06–0.08 mmol m − 2 s − 1 ) during the dry season compared to wet season, irrespective of UV radiation. At higher altitude (2800 masl) UV radiation increased stomata conductance. Thus, the effect of UV on conductance depends largely on the interaction with other environmental conditions. Maximal PSII efficiency (Fv/Fm) was lowest in the dry season at both altitudes and the lowest value (0.66) was measured on plants exposed to UV radiation at high altitude. In conclusion, UV radiation affects plant morphology, flowering time, Fv/Fm and leaf conductance, but other climate factors, like irradiance, temperature and vapour pressure deficit (VPD), have a stronger impact on productivity of pea than UV radiation.

Tyrosinases are a widespread family of multicopper oxidase enzymes. In our earlier work, we identified the presence of tyrosinases in lichenized Ascomycetes based on their substratum specificity, sensitivity to inhibitors and molecular mass. Here, we present a more detailed characterization of a tyrosinase from the lichenLobaria pulmonaria. We also compare tyrosinase activity with the activities of laccases and peroxidases, the other redox enzymes present in this species. The importance of tyrosinases in lichen biology was studied by testing their role in melanin synthesis. Laboratory experiments clearly showed that tyrosinases fromL. pulmonariaresemble those from other lichens and in free-living fungi. While the tyrosinases can metabolize the melanin precursor L-DOPA, L-DOPA can also be metabolized by peroxidases and laccases. A field experiment showed that exposing shade-adaptedL. pulmonariato normal solar radiation induces L-DOPA melanin synthesis. Synthesis occurred when lichens were exposed to either direct sunlight, or placed under a wavelength-neutral filter that slightly reduced overall light. In lichens receiving unfiltered sunlight, melanin synthesis was accompanied by increased laccase activity; by contrast, no changes in enzyme activity occurred in lichens placed under the wavelength-neutral filter. Melanization was reduced by placing lichens under filters that removed UV-B, and prevented by filters that removed both UV-A and UV-B. Removing UV-B had no effect on enzyme activity, whereas removing both UV-A and UV-B increased tyrosinase activity. Results from this study indicate that under some conditions laccases may be involved in melanin synthesis, but they provide no evidence for a role for tyrosinases in melanization. Although high tyrosinase activities are widespread in lichens, many questions on the role of this enzyme in lichen biology remain to be answered.

In order to improve growth chamber protocols for lichens, we tested the effect of 1) wet filter paper versus self-drained nets as a substratum for lichens, and 2) gradual versus abrupt transitions between dark and light periods. For Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoffm. cultivated on nets, RGR increased by 60% compared to those on wet papers, whereas abrupt on/off transitions between day/night gave as high growth rates as gradual transitions mimicking sunrise/sunset. Because thalli on nets had less surface water than those on papers, the higher RGR on nets likely resulted from less suprasaturation depression of photosynthesis. By supporting very high growth and eliminating any visible damage, the revised growth chamber protocols facilitate new functional lichen studies.

Relative growth rates (RGR) and carbon-based secondary compounds (CBSCs) were quantified in four dominant terricolous arctic-alpine mat-forming lichens with different preferences for snow cover. The aim was to evaluate the effects of snow depth, and thus snow cover duration, on lichen growth and performance. The species,Alectoria ochroleuca,Flavocetraria nivalis,Cladonia mitisandCetrariella delisei, are associated with increasing snow depth, respectively. They were transplanted for one year at five snow depths (0, 60, 120, 160 and 200 cm measured in early May) along each of four natural ridge to snow bed gradient transects in oceanic-alpine sites (western Norway). Snow slightly thicker than in source habitats caused negative RGR in the ridge top-dependentA. ochroleucaand the co-occurringF. nivaliswith somewhat higher snow tolerance. OnlyC. mitiswith the broadest ecological niche had positive RGR along most of the gradients (0–160 cm), even outside its natural range. The most snow-tolerant species,C. delisei, tolerant also to temporal inundation in water, had the lowest RGR. Nevertheless, it performed as well in places with little or no snow as in places where it grows naturally. Snow depth significantly affected total concentrations of CBSCs mainly inA. ochroleuca, which experienced substantial mass loss under snow. There was a highly significant increase in usnic acid concentration with increasing mass loss inA. ochroleuca, probably because usnic acid decays more slowly than other components. In conclusion, snow reduced lichen RGR, but in species-specific ways. Therefore, increasing snow depthper sealong spatial and/or temporal scales likely reduces abundance and distribution of dominant mat-forming lichens in the alpine ecosystems of Scandinavia.

We quantified annual growth rate and loss of Bryoria capillaris and Usnea dasopoga transplants on Picea abies on parts of lower branches in the inner versus outer canopy in small, medium and tall trees in hemiboreal forests. Light at branches in the inner canopy was 2.7 x (for Bryoria capillaris) and 2.0 x (for Usnea dasopoga) higher than the lichens’ respective light compensation points, 10.7 ± 1.2 and 14.5 ± 2.2 μmol m−2 s−1, respectively. Many Bryoria thalli were lost/fragmented on sheltered inner branches of small and intermediate trees, not on outer canopy branches exposed to wind, rain and snow. Hardly any loss occurred for Usnea. After excluding lost/fragmented specimens, Bryoria that remained intact grew faster (43.1 ± 4.4%) than Usnea (29.8 ± 1.4%). Outer canopy branches supported higher growth rates in Usnea (35.6 ± 1.5%) than inner branches (23.5 ± 2.1%), consistent with its association with rainy areas, whereas Bryoria that avoided loss grew fast in both branch locations. Bryoria, lower in secondary carbon-based compounds than Usnea, and thus the more palatable species, was likely grazed on inner branches and smaller trees accessible to rodents.

This study demonstrates that the spectral quality of radiation sources applied with ultraviolet-B (UV-B; background radiation) affects the suppression of cucumber powdery mildew (Podosphaera xanthii) by UV-B. Suppression provided by daily UV-B exposure of 1 W/m2 for 10 min was greatest in the presence of red light or by a complete lack of background light, and powdery mildew suppression was least in the presence of ultraviolet-A (UV-A) or blue radiation compared with plants exposed only to 16 h of daily natural light supplemented with high-pressure sodium lamps that supply broad-spectrum radiation with peaks in the yellow-orange region. Exposure of powdery mildew-inoculated plants to supplemental red light without UV-B, beginning at the end of the daylight period, also reduced disease severity; however, supplemental blue light applied in the same fashion had no effect. Daily application of UV-B at 1 W/m2 beginning on the day of inoculation significantly reduced the severity of powdery mildew to 15% compared with 100% severity on control plants. Maximum suppression of powdery mildew was observed following 15 min of exposure to UV-B (1.1% severity compared with 100% severity on control plants) but exposure time had to be limited to 5 to 10 min to reduce phytotoxicity. There was no additional disease suppression when plants were exposed to UV-B beginning 2 days prior to inoculation compared with plants exposed to UV-B beginning on the day of inoculation. UV-B inhibited germination, infection, colony expansion, and sporulation of P. xanthii. The results suggest that efficacy of UV-B treatments, alone or in combination with red light, against P. xanthii can be enhanced by exposure of inoculated plants to these wavelengths of radiation during the night, thereby circumventing the counteracting effects of blue light and UV-A radiation. The effect of UV-B on powdery mildew seemed to be directly upon the pathogen, rather than induced resistance of the host. Night exposure of plants to 5 to 10 min of UV-B at 1 W/m2 and inexpensive, spectral-specific, light-emitting diodes may provide additional tools to suppress powdery mildews of diverse greenhouse crops.

Disease-suppressive effects of nighttime applications of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) were investigated at two irradiance levels (1.6 or 0.8 W/m2) in strawberry and rosemary plants inoculated with Podosphaera aphanis or Golovinomyces biocellatus, respectively. Plants were exposed to each irradiance level every third night for either 9 or 18 min, every night for either 3 or 6 min, or three times every night for either 1 or 2 min. Thus, over time, all plants received the same cumulative dose of UV-B, and severity of powdery mildew was reduced by 90 to 99% compared with untreated controls in both crops. Use of polished aluminum lamp reflectors and UV-B reflective surfaces on greenhouse benches significantly increased treatment efficacy. An automated apparatus consisting of an adjustable boom with directed airflow was used to move UV-B lamps over greenhouse benches at 25 or 50 cm/min. Directed airflow moved leaves on the subtending plants to better expose upper and lower surfaces to UV-B but directed airflow actually decreased the efficacy of UV-B treatments, possibly by dispersing conidia from lesions before they were exposed to a lethal dose of UV-B. Results indicate broad applicability of nighttime applications of UV-B to suppress powdery mildews, and that cumulative UV-B dose is an overriding factor determining efficacy. Finally, enhanced suppression on shaded or obscured tissues is more likely to be affected by reflective bench surfaces than through attempts to physically manipulate the foliage.

Persistent DNA damage in gamma-exposed Norway spruce, Scots pine and Arabidopsis thaliana, but persistent adverse effects at the organismal and cellular level in the conifers only. Gamma radiation emitted from natural and anthropogenic sources may have strong negative impact on plants, especially at high dose rates. Although previous studies implied different sensitivity among species, information from comparative studies under standardized conditions is scarce. In this study, sensitivity to gamma radiation was compared in young seedlings of the conifers Scots pine and Norway spruce and the herbaceous Arabidopsis thaliana by exposure to 60Co gamma dose rates of 1–540 mGy h−1 for 144 h, as well as 360 h for A. thaliana. Consistent with slightly less prominent shoot apical meristem, in the conifers growth was significantly inhibited with increasing dose rate ≥ 40 mGy h−1. Post-irradiation, the conifers showed dose-rate-dependent inhibition of needle and root development consistent with increasingly disorganized apical meristems with increasing dose rate, visible damage and mortality after exposure to ≥ 40 mGy h−1. Regardless of gamma duration, A. thaliana showed no visible or histological damage or mortality, only delayed lateral root development after ≥ 100 mGy h−1 and slightly, but transiently delayed post-irradiation reproductive development after ≥ 400 mGy h−1. In all species dose-rate-dependent DNA damage occurred following ≥ 1–10 mGy h−1 and was still at a similar level at day 44 post-irradiation. In conclusion, the persistent DNA damage (possible genomic instability) following gamma exposure in all species may suggest that DNA repair is not necessarily mobilized more extensively in A. thaliana than in Norway spruce and Scots pine, and the far higher sensitivity at the organismal and cellular level in the conifers indicates lower tolerance to DNA damage than in A. thaliana.

Lichens are useful monitoring organisms for heavy metal pollution. They are high in carbon based secondary compounds (CBSCs) among which some may chelate heavy metals and thus increase metal accumulation. This study quantifies CBSCs in four epiphytic lichens transplanted for 6months on stands along transects from a highway in southern Norway to search for relationships between concentrations of heavy metals and CBSCs along a gradient in heavy metal pollutants. Viability parameters and concentrations of 21 elements including nutrients and heavy metals in these lichen samples were reported in a separate paper. Medullary CBSCs in fruticose lichens (Ramalina farinacea, Usnea dasypoga) were reduced in the most polluted sites, but not in foliose ones (Parmelia sulcata, Lobaria pulmonaria), whereas cortical CBSC did not change with distance from the road in any species. Strong positive correlations only occurred between the major medullary compound stictic acid present in L. pulmonaria and most heavy metals, consistent with a chelating role of stictic acid, but not of other studied CBSCs or in other species. However, heavy metal chelating did not protect L. pulmonaria against damage because this species experienced the strongest reduction in viability in the polluted sites. CBSCs with an accumulation potential for heavy metals should be quantified in lichen biomonitoring studies of heavy metals because they, like stictic acid, could overshadow pollutant inputs in some species rendering biomonitoring data less useful. In the two fruticose lichen species, CBSCs decreased with increasing heavy metal concentration, probably because heavy metal exposure impaired secondary metabolism. Thus, we found no support for a heavy metal protection role of any CBSCs in studied epiphytic lichens. No intraspecific relationships occurred between CBSCs versus N or C/N-ratio. Interspecifically, medullary CBSCs decreased and cortical CBSCs increased with increasing C/N-ratio.

In the lab, we exposed three foliose lichen species, Lobaria pulmonaria, Parmelia sulcata and Xanthoria aureola, to 0, 0.01, 0.2, and 0.6 M NaCl in combinations with copper and zinc (0, 10, 100, 500 μM). High salt concentrations adversely affected the lichen membrane integrity as measured by conductivity methods, whereas the potential photosystem II efficiency (Fv/Fm) was tolerant. High light was necessary to reduce Fv/Fm in thalli exposed to salt, whereas high light did not aggravate the conductivity. The seashore species X. aureola was much more resistant to salt than the old forest species L. pulmonaria. With respect to Cu and Zn, used concentrations had no (P. sulcata, X. aureola) or small (L. pulmonaria) effects on Fv/Fm. However, both heavy metals substantially increased conductivity in all species, consistent with membrane damage. Thus, the conductivity method detected high salt, high copper and high zinc stress much more efficiently than did the chlorophyll fluorescence method. This suggests that membrane integrity of the mycobiont is more sensitive to salt and heavy metal stress than potential photosystem II efficiency of its autotrophic partners.

Lichens are considered freezing tolerant, although few species have been tested. Growth, a robust measure of fitness integrating processes in all partners of a lichen thallus, has not yet been used as a viability measure after freezing. We compared relative growth rates (RGR) after freezing with short-term viability measures of photo- and mycobiont functions in the coastal Lobaria virens and the widespread L. pulmonaria to test the hypothesis that low temperature shapes the coastal distribution of L. virens. Hydrated thalli from sympatric populations were subjected to freezing at −10, −20 and −40 °C for 5 h. The rate of cooling and subsequent warming was 5 °C h−1. Short-term viability measures of photobiont (maximal photosystem II efficiency, effective PSII yield) and mycobiont viability (conductivity index), as well as subsequent RGR, were assessed. The exotherms showed that L. virens froze at −3 °C; L. pulmonaria, at −4 °C. Freezing significantly impaired short-term viability measures of both photo- and mycobiont, particularly in the coastal species. Lobaria pulmonaria grew 2.1 times faster than L. virens, but the short-term damage after one freezing event did not affect the long-term RGR in any species. Thereby, short-term responses were impaired by freezing, long-term responses were not. While the lacking RGR-responses to freezing suggest that freezing tolerance does not shape the coastal distribution of L. virens, the significant reported adverse short-term effects in L. virens may be aggravated by repeated freezing-thawing cycles in cold winters. In such a perspective, repeated freezing may eventually lead to reduced long-term fitness in L. virens.

Standard chemical toxicity testing guidelines using aquatic plant Lemna minor have been developed by several international standardisation organisations. Although being highly useful for regulatory purposes by focusing on traditional adverse endpoints, these tests provide limited information about the toxic mechanisms and modes of action (MoA). The present study aimed to use selected functional assays in L. minor after exposure to 3,5-dichlorophenol (3,5-DCP) as a model to characterise the toxic mechanisms causing growth inhibition and lethality in primary producers. The results demonstrated that 3,5-DCP caused concentration-dependent effects in chloroplasts and mitochondria. Uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), reduction in chlorophyll (Chlorophyll a and b) content, reproduction rate and frond size were the most sensitive endpoints, followed by formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipid peroxidation (LPO), reduction of carotenoid content and impairment of photosynthesis efficiency. Suppression of photosystem II (PSII) efficiency, electron transport rate (ETR), chlorophyll (a and b) contents and oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) were closely correlated while ROS production and LPO were negative correlated with ETR, carotenoid content and growth parameters. Blue and yellow sticky traps equipped with blue light emitting diodes (LEDs) were evaluated for their attractiveness to the western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande) and compared to similar traps without light in two greenhouses with commercial production of either mixed herbs or Alstroemeria cut flowers. Blue traps were more attractive to F. occidentalis than the yellow traps in both crops, regardless of whether they were equipped with light or not. In herbs, the blue light equipped traps caught 1.7 to 2.5 times more thrips compared to blue traps without light, and 1.7 to 3.0 times more thrips than yellow traps with light. Blue light on both blue and yellow traps increased thrips catches in one out of two experiments in Alstroemeria. The blue light equipped traps caught 3.4 and 4.0 times more thrips than blue traps without light in coloured and white Alstroemeria cultivars, respectively, whereas yellow light equipped traps increased thrips catches 4.5 times compared to yellow traps without light in both coloured and white cultivars. The yellow light equipped traps caught, however, only equal to or only slightly more thrips than blue traps without light, and caught fewer thrips than the light equipped blue traps. The relative trapping efficiency of the different combinations of trap colour and light varied with experiment, crop and Alstroemeria cultivars. This suggests that factors other than merely the addition of light influenced the thrips' phototactic response to the traps. Such factors could be differences in the relative strength of the competition between attractive signals from traps and plants between the two crops and Alstroemeria cultivars, thrips density, seasonal lighting conditions or different pest management strategies and other operational procedures in the greenhouses. The light from the traps did not increase the thrips population on the plants below the traps. The implications of the results for thrips control and suggestions for further studies are discussed. Greenhouse production of poinsettia calls for strict control of morphological parameters, which may be achieved through the use of chemical growth retardants. Use of such chemicals is becoming restricted thus alternative methods for growth control are needed. Here the effects of UV radiation were tested on Euphorbia pulcherrima (Willd ex. Klotzch) in controlled environment under moderate (60%) and high (90%) relative air humidity (RH), to determine the potential to control plant morphology. Vegetative plants (‘Christmas Feelings’) received UV during the dark period, while two generative cultivars, one strong growing phenotype ‘Infinity Red’ (‘IR’) and one more compact phenotype ‘Bravo Bright Red’ (‘BBR’), received UV at the end of the light period (EOD). The morphology of vegetative plants was mainly affected by RH rather than UV radiation. Generative plants were also strongly affected by RH, though both cultivars showed reduced plant diameter, shoot biomass, leaf area, and bract area when exposed to UV, as well as increased leaf chlorophyll content, though responses to UV were stronger in moderate RH compared to high RH. Transpiration of leaves and bracts was mainly affected by RH not UV, and photosynthesis and production time were not affected by either RH or UV. We conclude that UV radiation is a potential tool to grow more compact plants, though its effects are partially determined by the aerial environment.

Controlled environment chamber experiments at Petri dish level were conducted to examine the wavelength and dose dependent efficacy of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, the recovery action potential of optical radiation applied concomitantly/subsequently to effective UV treatment, and the lapse time between UV treatment and subsequent exposure to recovery wavelength on germination efficiency of Oidium neolycopersici conidia. Conidia of eight- to nine-day-old colonies were dusted on water agar surface in Petri dishes and exposed to UV treatments (without lid). Immediately after UV treatments, Petri dishes were sealed and incubated in darkness or differing optical environments generated using seven different radiation sources (range 290nm to 780nm). Twenty-four hours after UV treatment, fifty conidia from each sample were assessed for germination. Compared to non-UV controls,10% of the conidia germinated after 30s of exposure to 254nm or 283nm UV and subsequent dark incubation. Conidia germination was almost negligible if the exposure duration increased to 4min. Germination was about 60% with broad spectrum UV after 1min of exposure, and about 35% after 2 to 4min of exposure. There was no reduction of conidia germination with the exposure of ≤4min with 310nm. With the tested wavelength and dose ranges, germination recovery was effective in the 350nm to 500nm range. Germination efficiency of conidia treated with effective UV was significantly higher (73%) if incubated subsequently in the 350nm to 500nm range (germination recovery). Furthermore, germination recovery depends on the characteristics of UV treatment (wavelength, and duration of exposure) and the lapse time between UV treatment and subsequent exposure to optical radiation in the recovery range. The findings of this study provide key criteria for wavelength selection, combination and application time in the optical radiation range, enabling improved design of optical based management strategies against powdery mildews.

Nighttime ultraviolet (UV) radiation, if applied properly, has a significant potential for management of powdery mildews in many crop species. In this study, the role of growth light duration, irradiance, a combination of both (daily light integral) and light spectral quality (blue or red) on the efficacy of UV treatments against powdery mildew caused by Podosphaera xanthii and the growth performance of cucumber plants was studied in growth chambers. Increasing daily light integral provided by high-pressure sodium lamps (HPS) decreased efficacy of nighttime UV treatments against P. xanthii, but it increased plant growth. Furthermore, the efficacy of nighttime UV decreased when day length was increased from 16 to 20h at a constant daily light integral. The efficacy of nighttime UV increased if red light was applied after UV treatment, showing the possibility of day length extension without reducing the effect of UV. Increasing the dose of blue light during daytime reduced the efficacy of nighttime UV in controlling the disease, whereas blue deficient growth light (

Rosette-formed, circular thalli of Degelia plumbea were studied in the laboratory. Regardless of thallus size, the optimal quantum yield of photosystem II (FV/FM) remained at a high, constant level during a drying cycle starting with fully hydrated thalli until the thallus water content reached about 200%. Net photosynthesis reached a maximum level at this hydration level. Thereafter, both FV/FM and net photosynthesis fell rapidly to zero at a water content of somewhat less than 100%. There was a highly significant, positive relationship between thallus size and the water-holding capacity, as well as a strong, negative correlation between size and water loss per thallus area. Consequently, an increase in thallus size from 1 to 36 cm2 lead to a tenfold prolongation of the photosynthetically active period during a drying cycle at a low radiation regime. The improved water-holding capacity in larger thalli is mainly a result of a thicker hypothallus. The fast desiccation of small thalli suggests that the regeneration of D. plumbea could be severely hampered by nearby logging that raises the evaporative demand by increasing radiation loads and wind exposure at remaining lichen sites.

Epiphytic lichens, comprising an important biodiversity component with significant functions in old boreal forests, are susceptible to logging. Leaving retention trees may partly compensate for the adverse effects of logging, but the impact of logging season on retained lichens is unknown. To identify the least harmful logging season seen from an epiphytic lichen perspective, we simulated logging events by transplanting two old forest model species – Lobaria pulmonaria (cephalolichen) and Lobaria scrobiculata (cyanolichen) – in summer, autumn, winter and spring, respectively. Lichens were collected in intact old forests and transplanted in clear-cuts. They were placed on five aspects (N, E, S, W, and top) on artificial stands covered with bark. They all gained biomass and area in the following year. However, logging in January resulted in subsequent higher relative growth rates than in lichens being exposed to clear cuts in other seasons, consistent with clear seasonal logging effects. Aspect impacted lichen growth less than logging season, despite significant bleaching and chlorophyll contents in the most exposed aspects. The high annual growth rate and the low level of damage after transplantation to clear cuts during winter suggest that green tree retention (GTR) logging practices in winter can support life-boating of susceptible old forest lichen epiphytes. Logging simulation during other seasons than winter resulted in lower growth, implying higher risk of permanent damage. Successful use of GTR cannot compensate for the loss of epiphytes at timber harvest, but supports local retained lichen populations that subsequently may boost re-colonization of the young stand.
