INTRODUCTION: Optimal venous thromboembolism (VTE) enoxaparin prophylaxis dosing remains elusive. Weight-based (WB) dosing safely increases anti-factor Xa levels without the need for routine monitoring but it is unclear if it leads to lower VTE risk. We hypothesized that WB dosing would decrease VTE risk compared with standard fixed dosing (SFD). METHODS: Patients from the prospective, observational CLOTT-1 registry receiving prophylactic enoxaparin (n=5539) were categorized as WB (0.45-0.55 mg/kg two times per day) or SFD (30 mg two times per day, 40 mg once a day). Multivariate logistic regression was used to generate a predicted probability of VTE for WB and SFD patients. RESULTS: Of 4360 patients analyzed, 1065 (24.4%) were WB and 3295 (75.6%) were SFD. WB patients were younger, female, more severely injured, and underwent major operation or major venous repair at a higher rate than individuals in the SFD group. Obesity was more common among the SFD group. Unadjusted VTE rates were comparable (WB 3.1% vs. SFD 3.9%; p=0.221). This study documented the associations and variability of four prestige metrics for kinesiology-related journals. Four prestige metrics for the year 2022 were collected from three database services for 334 kinesiology-related journals. The prestige measures were highly skewed and had large variability, with medical journals having the highest values. There were strong nonlinear and heteroscedastic associations between all four prestige indicators, however rankings of top 10% journals based on these metrics had considerable disagreement between metrics. The substantial variability of journal prestige metrics was larger than the variation previously reported for scholar subjective perceptions of journal prestige. The prestige metrics provided inconsistent and unrealistically precise estimates of kinesiology journal prestige. Great care should be exercised in interpreting prestige metrics and scholar perceptions of journal prestige in diverse disciplines like kinesiology.

The transition to adulthood is a challenging time of major decision-making about education, employment, finances, living situation, and social relationships. Transition planning is vital for youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), who are more likely than those without special education needs to encounter challenges with social integration, finances, employment, and everyday activities as they leave the secondary school context. This article presents a case study of a publicly funded Canadian resource program for high school students with ASD, focusing on student perspectives alongside those of program educators. Findings reveal that students benefit from the program, but say parents remain their primary transition planning confidants despite the program's transition planning focus. Students and educators state that program support is beneficial, but acknowledge that it cannot continue to the same extent after graduation, making regression and social isolation possible long-term outcomes for students. Implications for program design and future research are considered.

As genetic code expansion advances beyond L-α-amino acids to backbone modifications and new polymerization chemistries, delineating what substrates the ribosome can accommodate remains a challenge. The Escherichia coli ribosome tolerates non-L-α-amino acids in vitro, but few structural insights that explain how are available, and the boundary conditions for efficient bond formation are so far unknown. Faculty and student perception of engagement in two (mobile desks or mobile tables and chairs) low-tech active learning classroom (ALC) designs were compared. Student (n = 413) perceptions of engagement were measured with the Engaged Learning Index (ELI) and the Social Context and Learning Environments (SCALE) instruments at the beginning and end of a semester in a large, multi-disciplinary department. Faculty (n = 14) rated perception of engagement using only the SCALE instrument. Perceptions of engagement from faculty and students using SCALE were significantly more positive for both ALCs compared to perceptions of traditional classrooms. There was no clear evidence of differences in student and faculty perceptions of engagement between the two ALC designs. No or small differences between the two ALC designs means departments might consider cost, maintenance, and other pragmatic factors in ALC design.

Abstract Background Western Montana, USA, experiences complex air pollution patterns with predominant exposure sources from summer wildfire smoke and winter wood smoke. In addition, climate change related temperatures events are becoming more extreme and expected to contribute to increases in hospital admissions for a range of health outcomes. Evaluating while accounting for these exposures (air pollution and temperature) that often occur simultaneously and may act synergistically on health is becoming more important. Methods We explored short-term exposure to air pollution on children’s respiratory health outcomes and how extreme temperature or seasonal period modify the risk of air pollution-associated healthcare events. The main outcome measure included individual-based address located respiratory-related healthcare visits for three categories: asthma, lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI), and upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) across western Montana for ages 0–17 from 2017–2020. We used a time-stratified, case-crossover analysis with distributed lag models to identify sensitive exposure windows of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) lagged from 0 (same-day) to 14 prior-days modified by temperature or season. Results For asthma, increases of 1 µg/m3 in PM2.5 exposure 7–13 days prior a healthcare visit date was associated with increased odds that were magnified during median to colder temperatures and winter periods. For LRTIs, 1 µg/m3 increases during 12 days of cumulative PM2.5 with peak exposure periods between 6–12 days before healthcare visit date was associated with elevated LRTI events, also heightened in median to colder temperatures but no seasonal effect was observed. For URTIs, 1 unit increases during 13 days of cumulative PM2.5 with peak exposure periods between 4–10 days prior event date was associated with greater risk for URTIs visits that were intensified during median to hotter temperatures and spring to summer periods. Conclusions Delayed, short-term exposure increases of PM2.5 were associated with elevated odds of all three pediatric respiratory healthcare visit categories in a sparsely population area of the inter-Rocky Mountains, USA. PM2.5 in colder temperatures tended to increase instances of asthma and LRTIs, while PM2.5 during hotter periods increased URTIs.

Paleoceanographic interpretations of Plio-Pleistocene climate variability over the past 5 million years rely on the evaluation of event timing of proxy changes in sparse records across multiple ocean basins. In turn, orbital-scale chronostratigraphic controls for these records are often built from stratigraphic alignment of benthic foraminiferal stable oxygen isotope (δ18O) records to a preferred dated target stack or composite. This chronostratigraphic age model approach yields age model uncertainties associated with alignment method, target selection, the assumption that the undated record and target experienced synchronous changes in benthic foraminiferal δ18O values, and the assumption that any possible stratigraphic discontinuities within the undated record have been appropriately identified. However, these age model uncertainties and their impact on paleoceanographic interpretations are seldom reported or discussed. Here, we investigate and discuss these uncertainties for conventional manual and automated tuning techniques based on benthic foraminiferal δ18O records and evaluate their impact on sedimentary age models over the past 3.5 Myr using three sedimentary benthic foraminiferal δ18O records as case studies. In one case study, we present a new benthic foraminiferal δ18O record for International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Site U1541 (54°13′ S, 125°25′ W), recently recovered from the South Pacific on IODP Expedition 383. The other two case studies examine published benthic foraminiferal δ18O records of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1090 and the ODP Site 980/981 composite. Our analysis suggests average age uncertainties of 3 to 5 kyr associated with manually derived versus automated alignment, 1 to 3 kyr associated with automated probabilistic alignment itself, and 2 to 6 kyr associated with the choice of tuning target. Age uncertainties are higher near stratigraphic segment ends and where local benthic foraminiferal δ18O stratigraphy differs from the tuning target. We conclude with recommendations for community best practices for the development and characterization of age uncertainty of sediment core chronostratigraphies based on benthic foraminiferal δ18O records.

Climate change is an indisputable threat to human health, especially for societies already confronted with rising social inequality, political and economic uncertainty, and a cascade of concurrent environmental challenges. Archaeological data about past climate and environment provide an important source of evidence about the potential challenges humans face and the long-term outcomes of alternative short-term adaptive strategies. Evidence from well-dated archaeological human skeletons and mummified remains speaks directly to patterns of human health over time through changing circumstances. Here, we describe variation in human epidemiological patterns in the context of past rapid climate change (RCC) events and other periods of past environmental change. Case studies confirm that human communities responded to environmental changes in diverse ways depending on historical, sociocultural, and biological contingencies. Certain factors, such as social inequality and disproportionate access to resources in large, complex societies may influence the probability of major sociopolitical disruptions and reorganizations-commonly known as "collapse." This survey of Holocene human-environmental relations demonstrates how flexibility, variation, and maintenance of Indigenous knowledge can be mitigating factors in the face of environmental challenges. Although contemporary climate change is more rapid and of greater magnitude than the RCC events and other environmental changes we discuss here, these lessons from the past provide clarity about potential priorities for equitable, sustainable development and the constraints of modernity we must address.

Este artículo tiene como propósito analizar la apreciación de la autoevaluación por parte de los docentes y su relación con los procesos de autorregulación de los estudiantes. La metodología abordada es diseño no experimental, con enfoque mixto y nivel descriptivo correlacional, se utiliza un método sintético analítico, con una técnica de encuesta y revisión de avances en el campo de la evaluación formativa en cinco instituciones educativas de sexto grado de educación media ubicadas en las ciudades de Pasto, Manizales, Bogotá, Villavicencio y el municipio de Talaigua Nuevo (Bolívar) en el año escolar 2023. Los resultados indican que los docentes tienen un conocimiento limitado sobre métodos de evaluación, los estudiantes carecen de conciencia sobre autorregulación y no hay incentivos para la autoevaluación. Se concluye que es esencial trabajar en aula para mejorar la comprensión y aplicación periódica de la autoevaluación y autorregulación, estableciendo criterios claros y consensuados.

Three student engagement measures were collected for a class taught by an experienced instructor in two active learning classrooms with dissimilar seating arrangements. Student perception of engagement was similar between the learning spaces. However, instructor perception and researcher observation indicated greater engagement in the classroom with mobile tables compared to the classroom with mobile desks. STROBE classroom observations indicated qualitatively different student-to-student (8% greater), student-to- instructor (3% greater), and student self- (6.5% less) engagement in the mobile table classroom over the mobile desks classroom. Instructor and student perceptions may interact to affect student engagement with various designs of active learning classrooms.

BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic venous thromboembolism (VTE) remains prevalent in severely injured patients despite chemoprophylaxis. Importantly, although platelets are central to thrombosis, they are not routinely targeted in prevention of posttraumatic VTE. Furthermore, platelets from injured patients show ex vivo evidence of increased activation yet impaired aggregation, consistent with functional exhaustion. However, the relationship of this platelet functional phenotype with development of posttraumatic VTE is unknown. We hypothesized that, following injury, impaired ex vivo platelet aggregation (PA) is associated with the development of posttraumatic VTE. METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of 133 severely injured patients from a prospective observational study investigating coagulation and inflammation (2011-2019). Platelet aggregation in response to stimulation with adenosine diphosphate (ADP), collagen, and thrombin was measured at presentation (preresuscitation) and 24 hours (postresuscitation). Viscoelastic clot strength and lysis were measured in parallel by thromboelastography. Multivariable regression examined relationships between PA at presentation, 24 hours, and the change (δ) in PA between presentation and 24 hours with development of VTE. RESULTS: The 133 patients were severely injured (median Injury Severity Score, 25), and 14% developed VTE (all >48 hours after admission). At presentation, platelet count and PA were not significantly different between those with and without incident VTE. However, at 24 hours, those who subsequently developed VTE had significantly lower platelet counts (126 × 10 9 /L vs. 164 × 10 9 /L, p = 0.01) and lower PA in response to ADP ( p < 0.05), collagen ( p < 0.05), and thrombin ( p = 0.06). Importantly, the magnitude of decrease in PA (δ) from presentation to 24 hours was independently associated with development of VTE (adjusted odds ratios per 10 aggregation unit decrease: δ-ADP, 1.31 [ p = 0.03]; δ-collagen, 1.36 [ p = 0.01]; δ-thrombin, 1.41 [ p < 0.01]). CONCLUSION: Severely injured patients with decreasing ex vivo measures of PA despite resuscitation have an increased risk of developing VTE. This may have implications for predicting development of VTE and for studying platelet targeted chemoprophylaxis regimens. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Prognostic/Epidemiological; Level III.

Wasted produce is a pertinent issue in agriculture, with billions of tons of produce going to waste even before it hits markets. Specifically, in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), nearly half of all produce is lost before market. To combat this, the Agricycle® passive solar drier was designed to provide a cost-effective method of drying fruit for preservation. Using a psychrometric chamber to simulate the SSA environment, vitamin C, total phenolic contents, and iron tests were conducted, along with microbial content determination, water content determination, dissolved solids testing, and color and microstructure analyses to validate passive solar drying, comparing the results to freeze-dried samples. Nutritional contents were comparable between fresh, freeze-dried, and solar-dried samples, with a loss in vitamin C (statistically significant), total phenolic contents, and dissolved solids during solar drying. The microbial analysis for solar-dried samples was below standard limits, and the water content in the solar-dried samples was ~10% w.b. (® passive solar drier is a promising alternative approach for food preservation.

This article presents outcomes from a Workshop entitled "Bioarchaeology: Taking Stock and Moving Forward," which was held at Arizona State University (ASU) on March 6-8, 2020. Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the School of Human Evolution and Social Change (ASU), and the Center for Bioarchaeological Research (CBR, ASU), the Workshop's overall goal was to explore reasons why research proposals submitted by bioarchaeologists, both graduate students and established scholars, fared disproportionately poorly within recent NSF Anthropology Program competitions and to offer advice for increasing success. Therefore, this Workshop comprised 43 international scholars and four advanced graduate students with a history of successful grant acquisition, primarily from the United States. Ultimately, we focused on two related aims: (1) best practices for improving research designs and training and (2) evaluating topics of contemporary significance that reverberate through history and beyond as promising trajectories for bioarchaeological research. Among the former were contextual grounding, research question/hypothesis generation, statistical procedures appropriate for small samples and mixed qualitative/quantitative data, the salience of Bayesian methods, and training program content. Topical foci included ethics, social inequality, identity (including intersectionality), climate change, migration, violence, epidemic disease, adaptability/plasticity, the osteological paradox, and the developmental origins of health and disease. Given the profound changes required globally to address decolonization in the 21st century, this concern also entered many formal and informal discussions.

Fluorescence microscopy with fluorescent reporters that respond to environmental cues is a powerful method for interrogating biochemistry and biophysics in living systems. Photoinduced electron transfer (PeT) is commonly used as a trigger to modulate fluorescence in response to changes in the biological environment. PeT-based indicators rely on PeT either into the excited state (acceptor PeT) or out of the excited state (donor PeT). Our group has been developing voltage-sensitive fluorophores (VF dyes) that respond to changes in biological membrane potential (Vm). We hypothesize that the mechanism of voltage sensitivity arises from acceptor PeT (a-PeT) from an electron-rich aniline-containing molecular wire into the excited-state fluorophore, resulting in decreased fluorescence at negative Vm. In this work, we reversed the direction of electron flow to access donor-excited PeT (d-PeT) VF dyes by introducing electron-withdrawing rather than electron-rich molecular wires. VF dyes containing electron-withdrawing groups show voltage-sensitive fluorescence, but with the opposite polarity: hyperpolarizing Vm now gives fluorescence increases. We used a combination of computation and experiment to design and synthesize five d-PeT VF targets, two of which are voltage-sensitive.

Keywords are important bibliometric tools for classifying, accessing, and summarizing research. Citations to the top 10 Google Scholar (GS) Profiles were retrieved for 20 kinesiology-related subject labels/keywords. Total citations to top scholars were largest for the disciplinary keywords "physical activity," "exercise," "physical education," "sport science," "sports," "exercise science," "sport," and "kinesiology." Citations to top scholars using professionally aligned keywords were in "sports medicine" and "coaching." The results confirm previously reported trends of slow growth of use of the term kinesiology primarily in the United States, even though the highest citations were to the "physical activity" keyword that is the focus of the field in the United States. Strong citation counts to the "exercise," "physical education," and "sport science" keywords likely result from the diversity of research interests in the field throughout the world. Inconsistency of citation and use of keywords and bibliometric subject areas contribute to slow recognition and access to kinesiology research.

Active learning spaces form an important part of university learning environments and have the potential to enhance student learning, yet studies on student and faculty perceptions of collaborative learning pedagogies indicate that many remain resistant. To overcome this resistance, an academic department developed and implemented an active learning initiative to assist faculty who are preparing to teach in a classroom newly renovated for active learning pedagogies. Five semi-structured focus groups explored perceptions of faculty and students in the inaugural classes meeting in the renovated space to identify what they perceived to have enhanced or detracted from faculty delivery of content and student learning experiences. Thematic analysis revealed three themes: positive improvements in the physical classroom environment, enhanced student engagement, and improved instructional methodology because of faulty training and classroom renovation. Key findings indicated primarily positive perceptions of the renovated physical environment, especially the tables and mobile white boards; however, participants also noted frustrations with the furniture, classroom layout, and technology influencing student engagement and effectiveness of active learning strategies. Overall, data supported the conclusion that the classroom renovation and faculty training program effectively facilitated positive learning experiences and student-instructor interactions.
