3. Estimating catchment‐scale sediment storage in a large River Basin, Colorado River, USA.

Abstract

Catchment‐scale sediment storage is conceptualized as increasing in magnitude downstream, although reach‐scale controls may override this trend. We use empirical data from a literature review and two numerical models to quantitatively estimate sediment storage across the Colorado River Basin, USA. We use assumed alluvial thickness with floodplains delineated in the GFPLAIN model from 30 m digital elevation models. We use the SWAT+ model based on model‐estimated (i) groundwater storage and (ii) sediment storage. Existing studies indicate that sediment stored in floodplains and on low terraces is ~0.3–6 m thick. A first‐order approximation of volumetric storage capacity for natural floodplains is ~105 m3 per km. Sediment storage volumes of floodplains are ~108–1011 m3 over river lengths of 101–103 m. For the modeling estimates, we evaluated sediment storage by stream order and by elevation band within the Upper and Lower Colorado River Basins. Comparisons among the outputs cause us to place more confidence in the GFPLAIN and SWAT+ aquifer volume estimates. Each method includes substantial uncertainty and constitutes a first‐order approximation. Results suggest using 21 and 130 billion cubic meters as approximate lower and upper bounds for total sediment storage in the Upper Basin and 314 and 482 billion cubic meters as approximate lower and upper bounds for the Lower Basin. 9. A survey for cool white dwarfs and the age of the galactic disc

Abstract

This thesis describes a survey specifically undertaken to obtain a sample of cool white dwarfs directly from original Schmidt plate material. Concerns regarding of the subjectivity of 'eye-blinked' proper motion measures are avoided by using digitised data obtained using the COSMOS and SuperCOSMOS microdensitometers. The observational material is restricted to a single 6 deg field in which an exceptionally large database of over 300 Schmidt plates exists. As a brief aside, the issue of stacking digitised plate data is examined. In particular, recommendations for the correct weighting algorithm and bad pixel rejection algorithm to adopt are made, following detailed experimentation, with a variety of techniques. The plate stacking technique is used for the white dwarf survey material to extend the photometric survey limits, while the optimum proper motion limit to adopt is investigated in detail, with the principal concern being elimination of contaminants while retaining as many genuine proper motion objects as possible. Application of the reduced proper motion population discrimination technique to the resultant proper motion catalogue results in final sample comprising 56 white dwarf candidates. Follow up spectroscopic observations show the survey has been successful in identifying cool white dwarfs, gives no indication of contamination in the white dwarf sample for other stellar types, and also provides two further cool white dwarfs to include in the sample which were marginally excluded by the reduced proper motion survey criteria. Comparison of photographic colours with model predictions allow effective temperatures and bolometric luminosities to be estimated for the sample members. The luminosity function constructed from the sample members is in good agreement with previous work, although the slightly higher space density found for the coolest white dwarfs leads to a modest increase in the age estimate for the Galactic Disc when the luminosity function is compared to theoretical models. The Disc age is found to be 10-1+3 Gyr.

Transactions of the Leicestershire Archaeological and Historical Society, 68, 64-86, In 1795 an Anglo-Saxon cemetery was found at Wigston Magna and some of the objects from it drawn. The recording of surviving objects from the site has allowed a reappraisal, including relatively recent fieldwork. This suggests a sequence of occupation from the Iron Age to the early/middle Saxon. The cemetery material is principally sixth century A.D. in date and includes a high status element.

Abstract

Prescribed medication may lead to significant morbidity or mortality as a result of these medications causing adverse events, or because of a prescribing error. E-learning is a common tool used in supporting training in prescribing. This paper describes the development of an e-learning course and the subsequent evaluation undertaken by the users with the aim of obtaining an effective e-learning course for prescribing. The e-learning course was developed by general practitioners and pharmacists and focussed on the principles of good prescribing, examined the common reasons for prescribing errors, and was evaluated using self-reported quantitative and qualitative measures. Scores significantly increased on an assessment given before and after the course. The majority of respondents reported that the e-learning course had a positive impact on prescribing knowledge, skills and attitudes, with medication reviews the top area where a change in prescribing practice was reported. Over 90% of the respondents agreed that the e-learning course was easy to use and a useful part of their continuing professional education. This study shows that clinicians recognise the on-going need for training in prescribing, but the lack of training is one of the factors contributing to errors, which suggests that more education is needed, not just for GPs in training, but for qualified GPs as well.
