Abstract

Sperm nuclear basic proteins (SNBPs) were isolated from extracted antheridia-rich male gametophytes raised from spores of the swordfern, Polystichum munitum. Electrophoretic (acetic acid-urea PAGE and SDS-PAGE) and chromatographic (rp-HPLC) characterization of the nuclear proteins exhibited the characteristics of the histone (H-type). In both types of gel electrophoresis, histones H1, H2A, and H2B showed an altered electrophoretic mobility corresponding to that which is routinely observed for the histones in other plants. Histones present during spermatogenesis of the fern P. munitum were compared with the few current SNBPs known to be present in higher and lower evolutionary plant clades. A transition from an early protamine (P-type) SNBPs in charophytes and bryophytes to the (H-type) SNBP observed here is reminiscent of similar reversions observed in the animal kingdom. 13. Body Scan Analysis for Fit Models Based on Body Shape and Posture Analysis.

Abstract

Body shape analysis is the theoretical underpinning for the development of apparel sizing. Sizing as it is currently implemented uses body measurements to develop garment structures that must fit many body shapes within a size range as standardized sizes are not currently made to accommodate body shapes differing from the standard. Most sizing systems used in the U.S., are based on an hourglass or slightly pear shaped figure that has a proportionately smaller waist (8-10″) when compared to the hip/bust measurement. Image capture and data generation available through body scanning now allows researchers to investigate body shape in depth. This study is focused on body shape as presented in the U. S. population and relevant for understanding sizing and fit for women. A set of scales identifying the shape of nine body components important in apparel sizing was developed based on body shapes naturally occurring within the population. The components include body build, body shape, hip shape, shoulder slope, front torso shape, buttocks shape, bust prominence, back curvature, and posture. Experts in apparel pattern development then used the scales to score 100 body scans based on comparison to the scales. The expert analysis was checked for reliability and software to automatically analyze body shape was developed based on the body shapes identified by experts. The software is currently being used to identify target markets within a larger sample for sloper production and the identification of principles for grading with each target market.
