- Abstract
Background: No previous studies have reported predictors and moderators of outcome of psychological therapies for depression experienced by adults with intellectual disabilities (IDs). We investigated baseline variables as outcome predictors and moderators based on a randomised controlled trial where behavioural activation was compared with guided self‐help. Methods: This study was an exploratory secondary data analysis of data collected during a randomised clinical trial. Participants (n = 161) were randomised to behavioural activation or guided self‐help and followed up for 12 months. Pre‐treatment variables were included if they have previously been shown to be associated with an increased risk of having depression in adults with IDs or have been reported as a potential predictor or moderator of outcome of treatment for depression with psychological therapies. The primary outcome measure, the Glasgow Depression Scale for Adults with Learning Disabilities (GDS‐LD), was used as the dependant variable in mixed effects regression analyses testing for predictors and moderators of outcome, with baseline GDS‐LD, treatment group, study centre and antidepressant use as fixed effects, and therapist as a random effect. Results: Higher baseline anxiety (mean difference in outcome associated with a 1 point increase in anxiety 0.164, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.031, 0.297; P = 0.016), lower performance intelligence quotient (IQ) (mean difference in outcome associated with a 1 point increase in IQ 0.145, 95% CI 0.009, 0.280; P = 0.037) and hearing impairment (mean difference 3.449, 95% CI 0.466, 6.432; P = 0.024) were predictors of poorer outcomes, whilst greater severity of depressive symptoms at baseline (mean difference in outcome associated with 1 point increase in depression −0.160, 95% CI −0.806, −0.414; P < 0.001), higher expectation of change (mean difference in outcome associated with a 1 point increase in expectation of change −1.013, 95% CI −1.711, −0.314; p 0.005

Introduction: Consumption of snacks and food can be reduced by placing them further away from an individual, known as the Proximity Effect. This effect is generally thought to be robust, and observable between when snacks are presented at 20cm and 70cm. It is assumed that this effect occurs without conscious awareness or processing, but no study has experimentally tested whether the effect occurs via non-conscious processing. Method: A sample of 84 individuals is targeted, with each individual being assigned to one of four conditions via computerised random number sequence. A 2(Distance; 20cm, 70cm) x 2(Attention State; Distraction/Video, Control/No Video) between subjects design is implemented, with all individuals being presented with a bowl containing 250g of M&M’s. Individuals will either be asked to watch a 5-minute video clip, or sit quietly for 5 minutes. Snack consumption is measured at two levels: likelihood of consumption (any snack consumed vs none consumed), and actual consumption (continuous, measured in grams). Snacks will be removed after the 5 minute period, with individuals then being asked to complete a short questionnaire. Analysis: A binary logistic regression will be conducted to test for differences in likelihood of consumption. Actual consumption will be analysed through a 2x2 ANCOVA. Covariates of Perceived Effort and Visual Salience will be included in models for both analyses to assess the influence of these factors. Sensitivity analysis will be conducted for when outliers, those who were aware of the study intent, and those influenced by their environment are removed from analysis. All outcomes will be reported.Discussion: The proposed study will assess whether individuals consume more snacks when presented closer (proximity effect), as well as if consumption is higher when watching a short video clip, and the interaction between the two factors. Outcomes of the study will allow researchers to determine whether the proximity effect is likely to occur via non-conscious processing and without conscious awareness, or whether the effect occurs while individuals are aware of their behaviour. The results may influence future research and choice architects to ensure less-healthy snacks are placed further away if individuals are distracted with another stimulus to prevent mindless eating.

Strain gradients have been used to link various microscale deformation phenomena to the mechanical response of a polycrystalline material, revealing sub-crystal deformation structures. The strain gradients are computed in terms of the orientation gradients and then converted to geometrically necessary dislocation densities, a quantity considered important to explain flow stress and strain hardening behaviour. In this study, a unique method has been developed to compute the orientation gradients by finite element method while enforcing orientation continuity inside the grains and allowing sharp gradients at the grain boundaries by a global minimization approach. The method is showcased on an exemplar electron backscatter diffraction datasets of a stainless type of steel. The energy minimization method (Demir et al., 2009) reveals geometrically necessary dislocation densities that are an order of magnitude lower than those calculated using the widely accepted Least-Squares minimization approach (Arsenlis et al., 1999). The proposed approach successfully eliminates sharp orientation gradients at grain boundaries, removing the artificially high dislocation densities near orientation discontinuities that is characteristic to the finite difference-based approaches.

PubMed: 31209238, The effectiveness of most cancer targeted therapies is short-lived. Tumors often develop resistance that might be overcome with drug combinations. However, the number of possible combinations is vast, necessitating data-driven approaches to find optimal patient-specific treatments. Here we report AstraZeneca’s large drug combination dataset, consisting of 11,576 experiments from 910 combinations across 85 molecularly characterized cancer cell lines, and results of a DREAM Challenge to evaluate computational strategies for predicting synergistic drug pairs and biomarkers. 160 teams participated to provide a comprehensive methodological development and benchmarking. Winning methods incorporate prior knowledge of drug-target interactions. Synergy is predicted with an accuracy matching biological replicates for >60% of combinations. However, 20% of drug combinations are poorly predicted by all methods. Genomic rationale for synergy predictions are identified, including ADAM17 inhibitor antagonism when combined with PIK3CB/D inhibition contrasting to synergy when combined with other PI3K-pathway inhibitors in PIK3CA mutant cells. © 2019, The Author(s)., National Institute for Health Research, NIHR Wellcome Trust, WT: 102696, 206194 Magyar Tudományos Akadémia, MTA Bayer 668858 PrECISE AstraZeneca, We thank the Genomics of Drug Sensitivity in Cancer and COSMIC teams at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute for help with the preparation of the molecular data, Denes Turei for help with Omnipath, and Katjusa Koler for help with matching drug names across combination screens. - Abstract
The effectiveness of most cancer targeted therapies is short-lived.

- Abstract
As part of its Sustainable Future theme to help build momentum ahead of COP26, IOM3 hosted a week of virtual events across 6-10 September. This week showcased the vital role of professionals in materials, minerals and mining in the transition to a low carbon, resource efficient society. The third day of the series explored the role of materials in mitigating climate change. The day concentrated on the different materials types and what companies are doing to reduce the carbon footprints of what are vitally important products to the economy. This webinar focused on the materials and processing industries and how they can/will play a crucial role in decarbonisation and the route to net zero. This includes the role of materials and how they are made, processed and used and how critical these industries are as vital parts of the overall strategy towards a net zero future. Hear from a range of industrial, academic and policy experts as they explore the role of manufacturing and materials in reaching Net Zero. This session looks in more detail at: complementary low carbon technologies related to the manufacture and use of materials; an understanding of the role of materials in unlocking these low carbon technologies; an opportunity to discuss with industry and research leaders the challenges in bringing these new technologies to market. You'll hear from: -- Materials 4.0 - Professor David Knowles; -- The Role of Advanced Materials in the Decarbonisation of Air Transport - Neil Glover, Rolls-Royce, As part of its Sustainable Future theme to help build momentum ahead of COP26, IOM3 hosted a week of virtual events across 6-10 September. - Abstract
BACKGROUND: No studies have explored the acceptability of Behavioural Activation and Guided Self-Help interventions for depression with people who have intellectual disabilities. METHOD(S): Twenty-five participants were purposively sampled from participants taking part in a trial comparing Behavioural Activation with a Guided Self-Help intervention. A framework analysis was used to analyse interviews covering participants' expectations and views of therapy. RESULT(S): Participants were largely positive about both interventions. However, they identified specific aspects of each intervention which they had found helpful. All participants valued the therapeutic relationship. The participants also had a number of criticisms and suggestions for improving the therapies. A common concern was the time-limited nature of the interventions and a wish for longer-term help. Overall, both sets of participants felt the interventions had relevance for their wider lives. CONCLUSION(S): The participants reported having positive engagement with the therapies but expressed a wish for longer-term supportive relationships.Copyright © 2019 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Offloading of the foot of individuals living with diabetes is a high priority when managing complications such as ulceration. Guidelines for offloading have been produced by the International Working Group for the Diabetic Foot (Bus et al, 2020), but these are not always followed in practice for a range of reasons. This was discussed by a national expert panel, who recommend that these guidelines should be adopted and integrated into local care pathways. These documents can then be used to underpin any action that is required to remove barriers which prevent the podiatrist being able to implement evidenced-based practice in offloading. 415 - Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to define the processes involved in the formation of Adverbials which have the morphological shape adj+ly, in terms of the theory of Transformational Grammar and starting with the assumptions about syntax contained in Chomsky's "Aspects of the Theory of Syntax" (1965). This thesis is therefore fundamentally descriptive in its aim and attempts to provide analyses for the traditional de-adjectival Adverbials, that is for Manner and Degree and Sentence Adverbials, These are found to be considerably more varied in their syntactic origins that has generally been supposed. It has also been necessary to relate to de-adjectival Adverbials other structures e.g. with + N.P. and like -N.P., which carry out identical functional roles. Some of the conclusions arrived at have implications not only for the analysis of particular structures but also for the nature of the "Model" set up to define natural language. The thesis starts with a consideration of prevalent assumptions concerning the analysis of these Adverbials, One of the central notions of current theory, here termed "The Doctrine of the Unique Source", is that which attempts to explicate the relationship between alternative surface forms of Manner and Degree Adverbials by hypothesising a single Deep Structure category from which they all arise. This "Doctrine" is intimately linked with theoretical assumptions about the nature of Interrogatives and the definition of syntactic function. Since the conclusion is here reached that the "Unique Source" is a mistaken hypothesis some of the support for these related theories is removed. Finally, a further theoretical implication of this study is that the "Aspects" Model is inadequate for defining a relationship between categories that is required for the expression of a process common to all de-adjectival Adverbials, In fact it provides further empirical evidence that the notion "A qualifies B" must be directly definable.
