This panel is situated at the intersections of Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS) and provenance research. In this panel, we will share experiences and challenges in documenting the changes of a KOS The panelists will provide real‐world examples drawn from their research and practice. These examples range from KOSs used in LIS, such as the Dewey Decimal Classifications, Homosaurus, and Library of Congress Subject Headings; to extended information science research fields, such as digital preservation metadata standards, biodiversity taxonomies, and ontologies. Currently, the models and practices for documenting changes in KOSs fall short in supporting even simple provenance queries like "who made the change?""what are the reasons for the change?"or"when was the change made?" The panelists will collectively discuss examples of queries we have faced, as well as the implications for provenance for KOS research and practice. This panel is sponsored by Classification & Metadata Research Special Interest Group (SIG‐CMR). This study examines the historical perception of knowledge organization systems (KOS) as reinforcing oppressive regimes and epistemicides, particularly regarding issues such as race, gender, sexuality, and feminist studies. Drawing on the concepts of social differentiation, intersectionality, and decoloniality, it explores the complexities and challenges encountered in developing these systems within a context marked by the pervasive influence of technologies like artificial intelligence, semantic interoperability, alignment, and governance in emerging knowledge networks. Furthermore, it proposes an experimental process to operationalize intersectionality and decoloniality as pivotal dimensions in defining the structuring warranty employed in constructing KOS. This involves integrating these perspectives into the development processes while considering the interconnectedness among various forms of oppression and inequality and recognizing the imperative to decolonize knowledge and underlying power structures. Subsequently, the implementation stages of the COEXISTENCE -- Thesaurus of Intersectionality and Decolonial Issues: Black Studies, Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies are outlined, followed by an analysis of the constraints and potentials of the experimental instrument devised and the approach adopted in its implementation. Introduction. Ontologies as knowledgebases have been heavily applied in computational biological studies by implementing into ML models for purposes such as disease-gene associations identification. Method. We conduct a case study using gene ontology (GO) annotation data and three ML models to replicate the prediction of autism spectrum disorder (ASD)-causing genes. Analysis. Data were collected from GO and Simmons Foundation Autism Research Initiative (SFARI). The semantic similarities between GO annotation terms on gene products were calculated. Results. The best-performing model can reach an AUC of .85, which means using GO annotation data for ASD disease-gene prediction can receive a significantly accurate result. However, we stress the importance of constructing knowledgebases in adapting to LLMs and the role of LIS professionals in curating community knowledge for interoperability and reuse. Conclusions. Biomedical ontologies play a crucial role in the discovery of biomedical knowledge. Knowledge organization and computer science domains require more communication and synchronization in the face of emerging AI and ML technologies.

THESAURI ,WOMEN ,GENDER studies ,KNOWLEDGE management ,QUALITATIVE research - Abstract
In developing and using knowledge organization systems (KOSs), it is important not to perpetuate his- torically privileged views that reproduce a representation and organization guided by a dominant logic. This study aimed to analyze terms in two thesauri specializing in women’s and gender studies used to represent the content of articles with the topics of women and gender. The research has a qualitative nature and used a descriptive method- ological approach and bibliographic research procedures. It analyzed keywords from scientific articles of the Revista de Estudos Feministas-REF (Journal of Feminist Studies) and the corresponding terms in two thesauri: Tesauro para estudos de gênero e sobre mulheres (Thesaurus for studies on gender and women) and the Tesauro de género: lenguaje con equidad (Gender thesaurus: language with equity). The methodological ap- proach is descriptive using bibliographical research procedures. The keywords analyzed were taken from scientific articles published in the ‘Articles’ section of the three volumes of the REF for the year 2022, available online. The limitation of the analysis period (2022) is justified as a sampling of keywords used to represent current themes on gender and women. Regarding the number of terms per article (one to three), the rationale was that they needed to have literary and usage warrants; moreover, limiting the terms allowed for adequate time quality for analysis and focusing on qualitative aspects through sample analysis. Significant incompatibilities were found between the keywords and the terms in the analyzed thesauri. It was concluded that for the representation and organization of knowledge to be relevant and legitimate, they must be aligned with the economic, political, and social context in which they are inserted. Thesauri, like all KOSs (systems of concepts), need their terms and semantic relationships to be continuously discussed and negotiated as a developmental step, in a spiral-like fashion. If updating is fundamental, the adoption of KOSs in scientific journals is also highly recommended for quality in the process of representation and retrieval of the scientific knowledge produced. KNOWLEDGE management ,INFORMATION storage & retrieval systems ,SOCIAL justice ,DOCUMENT classification ,ONTOLOGY - Abstract
The field of Knowledge Organization should recognize additional purposes beyond classifying documents for retrieval. These additional purposes can, in turn, guide us in developing Knowledge Organization Systems. A synthetic phenomenon-based approach to classification mirrors ontological reality. It thus allows writers to better comprehend how their own ideas fit within the broader structure of human understanding. It also allows students (and others) to appreciate that every idea they encounter fits within a broader whole; it should enhance their interest and ability to seek information on any topic. Such an approach serves a third purpose of enhancing social justice: Such an approach to classification is both less biased by nature and easier to navigate. There may be other purposes that we could identify which could also inform our development of KOSs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Semantic enrichment techniques and tools based on knowledge organization systems (KOS) have an important role to play in supporting information discovery. This paper reports on work investigating and developing automatic indexing techniques (for final intellectual judgment) based on KOS. Within the UK, the OASIS online index of fieldwork events and their unpublished reports represent a major initiative to make archaeological fieldwork available to a wider public. OASIS is hosted by the Archaeology Data Service and is funded by Historic England and Historic Environment Scotland. A wide variety of organisations provide OASIS reports. Subject indexing is inconsistent and sometimes sparse, although use of standard KOS from the Forum on Information Standards in Heritage is encouraged. Results from a case study for an automatic (KOS-based) subject indexing recommendation system are reported. Findings include the need to extend the KOS entry vocabularies and the need for post-processing filters to prioritise subject indexing significant for the document in question. The paper reflects on the experience with future work in mind, including discussion of evaluation issues and positioning the approach within the context of previous work on subject indexing, automatic indexing for Name Authorities and Named Entity Recognition (NER). The techniques followed in the case study can be characterised as a hybrid approach. The purpose for which the indexing is applied is a key distinguishing feature. In this case, the purpose or indexing policy for OASIS goes beyond overall aboutness to request indexers to include significant objects or artefacts found during the project. Future work will investigate contextual patterns reflecting significance and incorporate those patterns in post-processing prioritisation measures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Knowledge organization systems are likely to reveal disagreements and controversies in the construction of knowledge. This article looks at the social tensions reflected in the use of terms such as "race" or typical expressions like "woke" or "cancel culture". It compares the use of these terms in the French-speaking world between Wikipedia and the Rameau subject headings. It first examines the operational functioning of Rameau's indexing language for libraries, then that of the French Wikipedia's categorization system, and finally explores their differences and similarities in the use of the terms presented. CONCEPT mapping , *SOCIAL groups , *HETERONORMATIVITY , *GENDER , *QUALITATIVE research - Abstract
This article addresses the terms and concepts in knowledge organization systems related to individuals and social groups with sexual and gender identities that do not conform to cis- heteronormativity. Preliminary insights suggest that these concepts are not represented adequately in knowledge organization systems. Although advancements in gender and sexuality studies have occurred, these systems have not developed accordingly and as a result, hinder the recognition of the diverse range of sexual and gender identities thereby risking the perpetuation of prejudiced and discriminatory discourses about the respective individuals and groups. This exploratory qualitative study investigates terms and concepts reflecting terminological, social, and rights advancements relating to sexual and gender-diverse individuals. A bibliographic search was conducted in books, scientific articles, guides, and manuals addressing these advancements to support the construction of a conceptual map representation of the concepts. The study systematically structured representations hierarchically, beginning with overarching concepts and gradually delving into more specific ones. This approach was guided by a comprehensive understanding of the domain under analysis, ensuring clarity and accessibility for the reader. The organization of knowledge needs to incorporate gender and sexuality in the construction of knowledge organization systems so that diversity is adequately represented in these systems. The importance of knowledge organization and information retrieval techniques has been evident throughout human history, becoming even more crucial in the digital age. While computer systems and the web have facilitated information retrieval, challenges arose with the increasing volume of data. The introduction of Semantic Web technologies aimed to enhance precision and accuracy by converting the web into a structured data format. The Cultural Heritage (CH) community has been at the forefront of adopting Semantic Web practices to promote interoperability and shared understanding. In this study, we present a comprehensive conceptual framework that spans cultural heritage, information modeling, and information retrieval. Our model addresses early solutions in knowledge organization systems, highlighting the evolution from classification systems and controlled vocabularies to the significance of metadata schemas. We delve into the limitations of traditional knowledge organization systems and the necessity of formal ontologies, particularly in the cultural heritage domain. The comparative analysis of CRM vs. EDM, ontology-based metadata interoperability, and ontology technologies elucidate our contributions to the field. This paper outlines the process from the initial steps of adopting Semantic Web technologies in the CH domain to the latest developments in CH information retrieval. In this paper, we also reviewed intelligent applications and services developed in the CH domain after establishing semantic data models and Knowledge Organization Systems. Finally, challenges and possible future research directions are discussed. The findings revealed that GLAMs (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) are excellent and comprehensive sources of CH information. The CH community has put in a lot of time and effort to develop data models and knowledge organization tools; now it’s time to use this valuable resource to construct smart applications that are still in their early phases. This could benefit the CH industry even more.

METADATA ,LIBRARY catalogs ,KNOWLEDGE management ,LANGUAGE models - Abstract
This article addresses the underutilization of knowledge organization systems (KOS) elements in online library catalogs, hindering effective subject-based search and discovery. It highlights the International Society for Knowledge Organization's initiative to develop metadata guidelines for library catalog procurement, focusing on maximizing the value of subject metadata from classification systems and controlled vocabularies. The paper discusses the rationale for quality subject access, proposes desirable search functionalities based on research, explores implementation challenges, and outlines future developments. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of providing quality subject access in digital services and calls for further research on interface design, guideline adoption, KOS evolution, and the impact of language models on subject metadata use. The work underscores the need for applying controlled vocabularies in search interfaces across libraries, archives, and museums while acknowledging the complementary role of alternative approaches like social tagging and automatic indexing. Extensive future research is suggested to implement search functionalities, promote guidelines adoption, enhance KOS evolution, and assess the influence of language models on subject metadata utilization. CONCEPT mapping , *KNOWLEDGE representation (Information theory) , *THEMATIC analysis , *CONTENT analysis , *CLASSIFICATION - Abstract
Objective: The scientific area called Knowledge Organization encompasses the study and development of Knowledge Organization Systems, among which are the glossary, taxonomy, classification system, conceptual map or semantic network, thesaurus and ontology. The objective of this study is to distinguish the main types of Knowledge Organization Systems through a theoretical contextualization and reporting of practical experience. Method: This is a descriptive, qualitative study of an applied nature. Initially, with a scientific article as the domain, a content analysis was conducted using the thematic categorical analysis technique to identify the categories that represented the content. After coding and categorization, six knowledge representation instruments were developed with the help of software (Atlas.ti, CMAP, THESA and Protégé). Result: The glossary and faceted taxonomy developed supported the development of the classification system, thesaurus, conceptual map and ontology. For ontology, the most complex instrument, in addition to the faceted taxonomy, the prior elaboration of the conceptual map was essential. Conclusions: The association of theoretical contextualization with practical development enabled greater clarity regarding the distinctive aspects of each instrument, as well as the observation of the interdependence between them. The iterative nature, inherent to the construction process, was highlighted, as well as the importance of using support software. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

TAXONOMY , *INFORMATION science , *NATURAL language processing - Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to provide a systematic literature review on taxonomy alignment methods in information science to explore the common research pipeline and characteristics. Design/methodology/approach: The authors implement a five-step systematic literature review process relating to taxonomy alignment. They take on a knowledge organization system (KOS) perspective, and specifically examining the level of KOS on "taxonomies." Findings: They synthesize the matching dimensions of 28 taxonomy alignment studies in terms of the taxonomy input, approach and output. In the input dimension, they develop three characteristics: tree shapes, variable names and symmetry; for approach: methodology, unit of matching, comparison type and relation type; for output: the number of merged solutions and whether original taxonomies are preserved in the solutions. Research limitations/implications: The main research implications of this study are threefold: (1) to enhance the understanding of the characteristics of a taxonomy alignment work; (2) to provide a novel categorization of taxonomy alignment approaches into natural language processing approach, logic-based approach and heuristic-based approach; (3) to provide a methodological guideline on the must-include characteristics for future taxonomy alignment research. Originality/value: There is no existing comprehensive review on the alignment of "taxonomies". Further, no other mapping survey research has discussed the comparison from a KOS perspective. Using a KOS lens is critical in understanding the broader picture of what other similar systems of organizations are, and enables us to define taxonomies more precisely. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article first focuses on the emergence of a scholarly discourse on periodization. That discourse includes historians' efforts to diversify criteria for individuating periods, and philosophers' analyses of periodization as a form of historiographical theorizing. Next the article turns to the dynamic interaction between scholarly periodization and the broader institutionalization of periodizations. This is followed by a brief review of arguments against periodization. The article ends with a look at how periodizations are treated in knowledge organization systems (KOS). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Nuovo soggettario, the official Italian subject indexing system edited by the National Central Library of Florence, is made up of interactive components, the core of which is a general thesaurus and some rules of a conventional syntax for subject string construction. The Nuovo soggettario Thesaurus is in compliance with ISO 25964: 2011-2013, IFLA LRM, and FAIR principle (findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability). Its open data are available in the Zthes, MARC21, and in SKOS formats and allow for interoperability with l library, archive, and museum databases. The Thesaurus's macrostructure is organized into four fundamental macro-categories, thirteen categories, and facets. The facets allow for the orderly development of hierarchies, thereby limiting polyhierarchies and promoting the grouping of homogenous concepts. This paper addresses the main features and peculiarities which have characterized the consistent development of this categorical structure and its effects on the syntactic sphere in a predominantly pre-coordinated usage context. - Abstract
Health care-related queries are a common source of information seeking online, and, in light of the June 2022 U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, information concerning reproductive health in the United States is now of particular interest. Increasingly, search applications turn to semantic models to assist in responding to user queries, with the knowledgebase Wikidata playing a prominent role. However, Wikidata's representation of topics around reproductive health care, as well as the implications for user searches, are currently unclear. To further examine this, the present study analyzed Wikidata's treatment of abortion, compared this to representations in three medical domain models, and tested web searches to gauge Wikidata's influence on search results. Results show that, as a semantic model, Wikidata attempts to represent topics around abortion in a manner that is at once both multi-perspective and simplified, leading to logical inconsistencies when compared to domain models. Wikidata's influence on semantically supported web search is more difficult to ascertain as search engines' treatment of abortion appears purposely exceptional, though a strong influence from Wikipedia was noted. Findings from this study demonstrate the importance of how semantic models address the medical and health domain, and suggest the need for greater transparency in how health care information is treated within web search applications. The scientific exchange correspondence of the Dundo Museum Biology Laboratory (Angola), included in the archive of António de Barros Machado (1912–2002) and Dora Lustig (1907–1986), constitutes a valuable repository of information for the history of contemporary science, particularly in the field of natural sciences—botany, entomology, mammals, ornithology, primates, reptiles, termites, zoogeography, zoology—and of biology. This paper describes the application of the Records in Contexts model to the correspondence collection, with the aim of representing two realities: its production context and the relationships between scientists. The exploration of the model sought to understand its fundamentals and, simultaneously, model the information, starting by identifying the entities, attributes and relations needed for the collection representation scheme. This study resulted in a modelling exercise of the relations between 11 correspondents and the director of the Dundo Museum Biology Laboratory, Barros Machado, regarding the work on the museum collections which culminated in the publication of scientific articles in Publicações Culturais da Companhia de Diamantes de Angola [Cultural Publications of the Diamond Company of Angola]. In the future, it is proposed to apply the same scheme to the description of the remaining scientists in the epistolary collection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Job postings in the Library and Information Science (LIS) sector increasingly include information professionals on teams that analyze data and organize it into knowledge organization systems (KOS). This involves processing and visualizing the data of businesses and organizations on the basis of their capacity to prepare and analyze data and fit into multidisciplinary research teams. To organize the results of data analysis, products and other content objects use KOS, in particular website taxonomies. The taxonomists’ task is not limited to coordinating and categorizing, as they take part in the entire process of analysis, management, and preparation for data consultation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
It proposes a conceptual analysis in order to elucidate the convergent relationship between the activities that are characterized by the scientific, critical and technical practices of Knowledge Organization, Digital Preservation and Digital Curatorship and Memory studies. It aims to discuss issues related to the identification of Knowledge Organization within digital curatorial activities, understanding its possible implications for the preservation and access to institutional and scientific memory, which in turn, from an applied point of view, ultimately requires the existence of a repository for the safeguarding of digital objects. The methodology is classified as the initial materialization of a collective effort based on a deductive method, where we start from the basic characteristics of these activities already listed for the particular that is translated into the perspective of a convergent nature between them and is present through a basic, qualitative and exploratory research from a survey, followed by a debate, of the bibliography. It concludes that it is not possible to think about safeguarding digital objects without also reflecting critically on the criteria used for their description and on the vocabulary that enables their subsequent retrieval. Amidst so many nuances, it is still necessary to think about the proposition of policies that support the construction of a repository focused - not only - on the storage of digital objects, but also on the provision of access and the full management of their life cycle. This paper describes the creation of a terminological glossary for the subject domain of knowledge organization systems (KOS). The glossary addresses the need for unambiguous conceptual information about the subject matter for students majoring in information science. It aims to create a glossary of definitions for concepts of different types of KOS. The theoretical and methodological foundations are based on corpus linguistics for the construction of the glossary. The methodology is characterized as an exploratory, descriptive, and applied study, using the ISKO Encyclopedia of Knowledge Organization (IEKO) as a source for data collection and terminology. The cut-off was based on the KOSs listed in NISO Z39.19 (2005; R2010) and ISO 25964 (2011; 2013). It is hoped that the terminological glossary created will improve students' understanding of the different KOSs, by compiling definitions and giving them greater semantics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Within libraries and other information units, Knowledge Organization (KO) is a central axis of the processes. In order to carry out an efficient KO, various Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS) are used, including thesauri. Several international standards regulate the design and construction of thesauri. This article analyzes the design and development of thesauri by students of librarianship from a higher education college, taking the guidelines published in ISO 25964 as a reference. After this activity was completed, qualitative and quantitative aspects of the product developed were analyzed, namely: the topics of the thesauri developed, the use of descriptors, non-descriptors and identifiers, the presence of equivalent, hierarchical and associative relationships between the terms and the use of typographical variants, abbreviations, qualifiers and scope notes. Designed to strengthen understanding of its structure and use, this activity was developed over a period of six weeks and in virtual and remote mode. The activity showed a deficient appropriation of the concepts related to the input vocabulary of a thesaurus and equivalence relations. The importance of domain topic knowledge on the part of those performing this task was demonstrated as a factor that ensures the effective development of the work. The activity is highly recommended in the subjects who deal with documentary analysis activities in librarianship courses of study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This article reports and reflects on vocabulary mapping techniques, tools and experience from the ARIADNE European archaeological infrastructure projects, where the widely differing terminology of subject indexing in the different partner languages posed significant challenges for effective data integration. The Getty Art & Architecture Thesaurus is employed as a central spine vocabulary for partners to map their native vocabularies and term lists – a hub structure enables a multilingual search capability via vocabulary mapping. Mappings are expressed via SKOS mapping relationships and output as structured JSON for use in the overall data aggregation process and in the ARIADNE portal. The approach followed offers some automatic support for final intellectual judgement. The method can be characterised as providing lexical support in an interactive tool that aims to intuitively visualise semantic context. The experience of partners in producing the vocabulary mappings is discussed in light of previous work in this area. Reflections on lessons learned both for the immediate project and for vocabulary mapping in general contribute to the conclusions. Future search functionality could take account of available vocabulary mappings via a range of search options, such as query expansion including compound mappings and mapping types. Further work on mapping guidelines and metadata is recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article is intended to clarify, for those who are not familiar yet with them, the commonalities and specificities of knowledge organization systems (KOS) on the one hand and ontologies on the other, considering their common structural model and their shared purpose as tools assisting in the organization and retrieval of information. In other words its aim is to define what is common and what separates knowledge organization systems from ontologies and why converting former KOSs into ontologies is preferred. In the end interoperability issues are discussed.

This paper posits a smart ecosystem as a complex system with several interdependent components or subsystems: Natural environment, smart city, smart buildings, smart office, smart manufacturing, smart life. Understanding, design, and operation of such a system can be supported by a comprehensive ontology. We introduce the structure of ontologies as consisting of a schema-level ontology, and entity-value-level ontologies, for each entity type a taxonomy of entity values. One can developing a comprehensive ontology by collecting and integrating specifications from many sources; we illustrate this process by building a very preliminary taxonomy of (smart) ecosystem functions from seven sources. Making ecosystems smart can improve the quality of life and contribute to more sustainable communities.

39. A partilha interdisciplinar de conhecimento: Algumas questões teóricas e operacionais em torno dos sistemas de organização do conhecimento.

- Abstract
Preserving semantics is particularly complex when the scope of sharing is interdisciplinary, given the inherent idiosyncrasies of different knowledge communities. One potential solution to transcend disciplinary boundaries involves the use of the ontological approach to modulating new knowledge organization systems. Using top-level ontologies or ontological meta-models as umbrella structures for other systems of smaller scope is an example of the application of such an approach in an interdisciplinary context. Although some applications do exist, a generalized adequacy to different epistemic perspectives is, within postmodern culture, regarded with great scepticism. Contrary to this issue of incommensurability, the existence of a common horizon for scientific practice is presented as feasible and not an impediment to the integration of different perspectives. This requires differentiating between statements of what exists (ontology) and test criteria (methodology), and not discarding or confusing the three schemes (perceptual, conceptual and linguistic) involved in the relationship between subjects and their milieu. This paper considers the Canadian Federation of Library Associations (CFLA) recommendation to "decolonize library access and classification" and begins by exploring the difficulty involved when addressing this recommendation working from within a colonial institution that represents a colonial worldview. It compares general characteristics of Western and Indigenous worldviews and considers the affect that these perspectives have on the organization of knowledge and information especially in relation to a controlled subject vocabulary like the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). It presents the "term circle" as a way to mitigate colonial biases by creating a hybrid subject language system using SKOS RDF/XML in a linked data context. This hybrid system facilitates Indigenous community participation in the control and development of subject metadata and suggests a new role for library metadata. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The reuse of Electronic Health Records (EHR) information models (e.g. , templates and archetypes) may bring various benefits, including higher standardization, integration, interoperability, increased productivity in developing EHR systems, and unlock potential Artificial Intelligence applications built on top of medical records. The literature presents recent advances in standards for modeling EHR, in Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS) and EHR data reuse. However, methods, development processes, and frameworks to improve the reuse of EHR information models are still scarce. This study proposes a software engineering framework, named BioFrame, and analyzes how the reuse of EHR information models can be improved during the development of EHR systems. EHR standards and KOS, including ontologies, identified from systematic reviews were considered in developing the BioFrame framework. We used the structure of the OpenEHR to model templates and archetypes, as well as its relationship to international KOS used in the oncology domain. Our framework was applied in the context of pediatric oncology. Three data entry forms concerning nutrition and one utilized during the first pediatric oncology consultations were analyzed to measure the reuse of information models. There was an increase in the adherence rate to international KOS of 18% to the original forms. There was an increase in the concepts reused in all 12 scenarios analyzed, with an average reuse of 6.55% in the original forms compared to 17.1% using BioFrame, resulting in significant differences. Our results point to higher reuse rates achieved due to an engineering process that provided greater adherence to EHR standards combined with semantic artifacts. This reveals the potential to develop new methods and frameworks aimed at EHR information model reuse. Additional research is needed to evaluate the impacts of the reuse of the EHR information model on interoperability, EHR data reuse, and data quality and assess the proposed framework in other health domains. Knowledge Organization and Representation ,Knowledge Organization Systems ,Multilingual Controlled Vocabulary ,Bibliography. Library science. Information resources - Abstract
Information Science (IS) faces an interesting paradox in the current context. On the one hand we have a big boom of information and on the other hand the immense challenge that can consolidate IS and Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS) through this scenario. This article seeks to point out ways that KOS can follow to counter web searchers such as Google, widely used tools that increasingly lead people to question library systems and why they exist. The web searchers have given a great contribution to the search for information in the digital environment. However, they are immersed in visions of large corporations and limited to stereotypes, sometimes prejudiced. Such systems still lack skills that can be found in KOS which follow ethical values and construction parameters that seek to know their users and their socio-historical-cultural reality.

The purpose of this article is to identify the most important factors and features in the evolution of thesauri and ontologies through a dialectic model. This model relies on a dialectic process or idea which could be discovered via a dialectic method. This method has focused on identifying the logical relationship between a beginning proposition, or an idea called a thesis, a negation of that idea called the antithesis, and the result of the conflict between the two ideas, called a synthesis. During the creation of knowledge organization systems (KOSs), the identification of logical relations between different ideas has been made possible through the consideration and use of the most influential methods and tools such as dictionaries, Roget's Thesaurus, thesaurus, micro-, macro- and metathesauri, ontology, lower, middle and upper level ontologies. The analysis process has adapted a historical methodology, more specifically a dialectic method and documentary method as the reasoning process. This supports our arguments and synthesizes a method for the analysis of research results. Confirmed by the research results, the principle of unity has shown to be the most important factor in the development and evolution of the structure of knowledge organization systems and their types. There are various types of unity when considering the analysis of logical relations. These include the principle of unity of alphabetical order, unity of science, semantic unity, structural unity and conceptual unity. The results have clearly demonstrated a movement from plurality to unity in the assembling of the complex structure of knowledge organization systems to increase information and knowledge storage and retrieval performance. CULTURAL property ,DISCRIMINATORY language ,KNOWLEDGE management ,ETHNICITY ,IMPERIALISM - Abstract
While historical cultural materials inform users of the past, they may also contain language that perpetuates long-entrenched patterns of discrimination. In organizing and providing access to such materials, cultural heritage institutions must negotiate historical language and context with the comprehension and perspectives of modern audiences. Excerpted from a larger project exploring representation and access around historical terminology and personal identity, the present work offers insight into how knowledge organization systems may be used to help modern users confront and make sense of past, discriminatory language in the archive. Using keywords drawn from the titles of 19th and 20th sideshow performer photographs, this work details the construction of a mapping dictionary that brings together corresponding terminology from several vocabulary sources along with annotations designed to explain historical terms to modern audiences. The development of this dictionary revealed several major types of problematic and potentially discriminatory language including historical euphemisms, misnomers, outdated terms, and sensationalist monikers. The finished dictionary offers opportunities to address these through explanatory annotations and to provide a richer, multi-perspective approach to subject analysis for these and other historical materials. This study explores six projects in mapping Knowledge Organization Systems (schemas, taxonomies, ontologies), and examines the data models used in these projects. We discuss (1) the two most common data models presented in these projects, namely tabular model, and tree model; (2) the implicit and explicit information shown in the data models; and (3) the information gains and losses of each model. We found that though the tree model maintains the hierarchical structure of the KOS while a tabular model flattens out the structure, both models can potentially obscure the information of the original KOS. This makes it problematic if we want to reconstruct a mapping project based on the outcomes manifested in either model. Our findings contribute to the Knowledge Organization literature by showing how choices of data models can impact the results in mapping schemas, taxonomies, and ontologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
